Tips for traveling with your pet.

  • Why Trust T+L

The Spruce Pets / Kristin Kempa

Traveling with your dog or cat can get overwhelming for both of you. On top of many pets having travel anxiety or getting motion sickness, they also get bored, have to use the bathroom, and get hungry and thirsty on the road. Whether you're traveling by car, plane, boat, or train (or even just going for a hike), you'll want to stock up on the top pet travel accessories to make you and your furry friend's experience a heck of a lot more enjoyable.

To get expert recommendations and tips for traveling with a pet, we spoke with Dr. Gina Rendon, medical director at Williamsburg Vet Clinic in Brooklyn, New York, and Dr. Catriona Love, medical director at Mercer Street Veterinary Hospital in Seattle, Washington. They shared important safety and logistical tips for traveling with your pet.

We also took recommendations from Travel + Leisure editors, did extensive research, and reviewed 131 products across seven different tests including ones for dog car seats, cat carriers, GPS collars, and more. Before you take your next trip with your pet, check out these travel accessories that will make vacations with the whole family run smoothly.

Best Airline-approved Dog Backpack Carrier

Mr. peanut's aspen series airline approved backpack pet carrier.

  • Performance 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5
  • Comfort 4.5 /5

Your pet will get great ventilation and views with mesh windows on all four sides.

The narrow width/height may not provide enough space for some dogs.

If you need an airline-approved pet carrier , this petite backpack-style dog carrier makes traveling hands-free with your dog a breeze. The thoughtful details stood out during testing, including several built-in pockets for storing treats, your phone, or waste bags. We also found the side water bottle pocket and laptop sleeve convenient. The interior is fleece-lined for your dog’s comfort, and there is a leash tether for security. Mesh on all four sides gives your pup a breathable space with all-sides peekability — two factors that can help comfort anxious travelers. This backpack is slim enough to fit under even the narrowest of under-seat space on a plane, but with only seven inches of interior floor width (as stated by the manufacturer, it’s made for smaller dogs). The padded backpack straps are easily adjustable, and you can also belt in the backpack with the handy seat belt attachment.

Best Dog Car Seat

Away the pet carrier.

  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5

It looks as good as it performs — and it has pet safety certification.

Minimal mesh paneling may be claustrophobic for some pets.

The Away Pet Carrier is a generous glow-up from the traditional pet carrier. Clean lines give this carrier a modern profile and silhouette, while the all-black color gives it an edge against the competition. We love this carrier not just for its looks, but also how it performs. Details like a water-resistant lining, removable plush bedding with a reinforced bottom, a retractable privacy screen, and loads of pockets and storage areas keep pets and pet parents happy. This carrier is also one of four pet carriers certified by the Center for Pet Safety for use in the backseat of your car. We tested this on a 12-hour car ride with a 6-pound dog who does not typically like car rides, and the dog seemed comfortable and secure, sleeping for almost the entire ride. It’s worth noting that there is limited mesh paneling (only on the top and one side), which may cause some pets to get claustrophobic and/or limit breathability in some situations.

Best Car Seat Cover for Dogs

Urpower dog car seat cover.

  • Ease of Setup 5 /5
  • Functionality 5 /5
  • Ease of Cleaning 5 /5

It is easy to install and has high sides for full protection of your car and pet.

It’s got fixed measurements, so be sure it’ll line up correctly with your car’s backseat space.

Road tripping with your pet? Polyester and 600D PVC material keep this hammock-style cover sturdy, durable, and waterproof — and your backseat spotless. We thought installation was painless, but take note if the fixed measurements and anchor strap placement fits with your car before buying. We love the high all-sides protection this cover provides so you don’t have to worry about cleaning up any shedding or mess from the floor, doors, or seatbacks — or your pet crawling up into the front seat. Cleaning the cover is as easy as wiping it down with a damp cloth. A purposeful design includes slots for accessing seat belt bases so you can clip in your pet for the ride, a nonslip rubber backing for stability when on the move, and a storage pocket with a Velcro closure for pet essentials. It comes in seven neutral color options, including a multi-colored paw print pattern and two black variations with orange accents.

Best Portable Pet Bowl

Maxbone go portable bowls.

It’s a stylish silicone pet bowl that you can roll up and toss into your bag.

The bowl size may be more of a snack size for larger pets.

This roll-up, two-in-one silicone pet bowl set is our favorite way to feed our pets on the road and gives us one less thing to keep track of while in transit. Each set comes with two bowls approximately five by two inches that are connected to a larger flat mat measuring 15.4 by 9.3 inches. The bowls are more like walled wells, and each holds around two-and-a-half cups. We tried this out with a dog who loves to splash, but the built-in placement and the way the bowls are attached mat them virtually spill proof (anytime the dog did scoop out food or spill water, the silicone mat would catch it). We also found the soft silicone veasy to clean with soap and water, and we love how quickly it dries — two big pluses when you’re on the move. The fact that you can easily roll up the mat and stick these bowls into your pet’s carrier or a tote also scores big in our books. Plus, the geometric design of the bowls adds an element of style to a product that is usually bland. These Maxbone Go! Portable Bowls are also available in contemporary colors like mint, pale yellow, peach, and sand.

Best Dog Food Storage

Iris airtight food storage container.

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Performance 2 /5
  • Durability 5 /5
  • Easy to Clean 5 /5

Both containers have easy-to-load, flip-top lids that snap shut.

The larger sizes may not be suitable for all types of trips.

This double-decker food storage container is an ideal way to keep your dog’s kibble fresh while on the road. We were big fans of the top-loading, flip-top lids and how well they stayed sealed shut when put to the test. Cleaning just takes a little bit of soap and water, though you’ll want to make sure the inside is completely dry before closing the lid to avoid mildew from moisture. The 35-pound capacity is great for longer trips or multiple dogs, and the wheely bottoms mean no heavy lifting. We also like that there’s an included scoop. While it may not be small enough to take on the plane, the top container can easily fit into the backseat or trunk of a car.

Best Cat Carrier

Maskeyon airline approved pet carrier.

  • Portability 4 /5

All sides can expand, but it still folds flat for easy storage.

The 19.5-inch length won’t be able to fly on several airlines.

Whether you’re heading to Vermont or the vet’s office, this expandable cat carrier is a smart way to give your cat a little extra space to lounge while you wait. We love that each side has an accordion-style, scratch-proof mesh expansion window, giving maximum configuration customization options. We transported a cat to the vet with all of the flaps folded in and then laid her out on a bench with some flaps unzipped when we got to the waiting room for extra space. Three exterior pockets keep travel essentials handy, and you have three zippered access and loading points, including from the top. This carrier can hold up to 20 pounds of cat, and you can carry it via built-in handles or a detachable shoulder strap. A soft-lined interior panel keeps kitty comfy, and it’s removable and machine-washable. The exterior is waterproof and wipes clean. The Maskeyon Airline Approved Pet Carrier is somewhat of a misnomer, though — its length exceeds several soft pet carrier requirements on a handful of airlines, including Delta, American Airlines, and United.

Best Dog Crate

Petmate pet kennel.

  • Performance 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.5 /5

The metal grate is secure but super simple to open and close.

The small plastic handle makes it challenging to balance weight, especially if your dog is moving around inside.

This old-school dog crate carrier is a hardside option for transporting your pup. Assembly is quick and requires no tools, and there’s a small plastic carry handle. We like this carrier because it’s lightweight but sturdy and kept our pet secure during transport. It’s a bare-bones crate, but there’s enough room to put down a cushion or add your pup’s favorite toy. You can load dogs through the front gate or the top gate, both of which have a simple and easy pinch-and-lock feature. This crate is designed to hold up to 15 pounds of pup, but be warned that it can be difficult to balance weight sometimes since the plastic handle is small and placed at the center of the top.

Best Grooming Wipes

Floof renewing wipes.

They are biodegradable and don’t have a strong scent.

Don’t use these around your dog’s eyes or inside their ears — everywhere else is fair game.

These biodegradable, hypoallergenic cleansing wipes are a go-to grab that can function as a quick way to get rid of dirt and bacteria between baths or simply after a walk. Made from bamboo and other natural ingredients like soothing aloe and chamomile, these wipes are as good for the environment as they are for your pet. They are gentle enough to use from nose to tail (just avoid eyes and inside the ears), and we love that we don’t have to worry about dogs getting sick if they happen to lick an area that’s just been wiped. One of our editors keeps a pack stashed in their dog’s carrier to clean his paws after walks or to give a light, impromptu, all-over bath anytime on the go. Wipes come in 30-sheet packs with a plastic snap closure to seal in moisture, and they’re small enough to tuck into the pocket of your pet carrier for easy access.

Best GPS Collar

Link smart pet wearable.

  • Accuracy 5 /5
  • Design 4 /5

It also works as a behavioral training device.

It requires a subscription to use.

Think of the Link Smart Pet Wearable Tracker as the Fitbit for dogs. This wearable takes GPS to the next level by also adding health and activity monitoring and behavioral training capabilities via sounds and vibrations. Plus, it works by transmitting location through Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and mobile signals for the most accurate location information. You need to download an app, and we found it easy to set up and navigate. We were impressed by how accurate the tracking was through Google Maps, pinpointing not only the dog’s exact address, but also the specific area of the house she was moving through. This will be incredibly useful for travel or hiking with dogs. Owners will get alerts when their dog has moved beyond boundaries, and they can also set up temperature alerts, turn on the built-in flashlight through the app, and do real-time checks on health symptoms. There’s even a step counter. The catch? You’ll need a subscription for this wearable to work. Subscriptions have three options; monthly, yearly, and two-year. This wearable comes with two attachment options and a wall charger.

Best Dog Seat Belt

Kurgo direct to seat belt tether for dogs.

It puts the bulk of the pull against your dog's body, not their neck.

It is not compatible with certain models of trucks.

Unlike many dog seat belts, the Kurgo Direct to Seat Belt Swivel Tether for Dogs clips directly into your car's seat belt fastener versus looping around the headrest. This tether is designed to attach to a dog harness instead of a collar, centering the pull of the tether on your dog's torso rather than their neck. The swivel-head carabiner harness attachment also allows your pet to move around without getting tangled. While this car seat tether works with most cars, it is incompatible with the seat belt fasteners in Ford F-series trucks.

Best Cooling Jacket

Ruffwear swamp cooler dog harness.

It also fits medium or large cats.

You can’t put this in the dryer.

A top pet travel tip from Dr. Rendon is to "be mindful and plan for the temperatures of the places to which you are traveling" and prepare accordingly. Bring coats and booties if it's cold and cooling mats or vests if it's hot. The Ruffwear Swamp Cooler Dog Cooling Harness functions as an evaporative cooling vest and lightweight harness that stays wet to keep your pet up to six times cooler in high temps. Triple-layer cooling panels — wicking outer layer, absorbing middle layer, and an inner dry layer — are located along the chest, stomach, and back. A padded, quick-grab handle allows you to assist your pet easily when needed. Plus, the simple and intuitive side-buckle design makes it a snap to get on and off. The harness's aluminum V-ring clips and reinforced loops can hold up to the demands of rugged outdoor adventures. Bonus? The XXS size was a perfect fit for my medium-size, heat-intolerant (and harness-trained) cat. When it's time to clean, it calls for the gentle cycle and air dry only.

Best Heating Mat

K&h pet products heated thermo-kitty bed.

The heat level adjusts to your pet's body temperature.

It's too small for medium-to-large dogs.

To continue on the theme of preparing for the weather, you can keep your cat or small dog toasty with the K&H Thermo-Kitty Mat. The insertable dual thermostat heater is designed to warm up only when your pet lays on top. From there, it adjusts the heat level to your pet's internal temperature so it's always just right. This is a great travel pet accessory to take camping, on car rides in cold temperatures, or for accommodations without central heating. This bed is big enough for any size cat and small dogs.

Best Dog Boots

Ruffwear grip trex dog boots.

They provide great grip and heat protection.

The low-ankle design may cause paws to get wet in snow.

Ruffwear Grip Trex Dog Boots are high-quality, rubber-soled dog boots that protect your pet's paws on rugged terrain, hot rocks and sidewalks, and frosty or salted paths. Some owners even use these boots indoors on slippery hardwood floors thanks to the heavily textured Vibram outsoles. The actual shoes are made from mesh, giving your dog's paws a bit of breathing room in hot climates. The gusset design makes it easy to take these shoes off and on. While these shoes work well on salted pavement and in freezing temperatures (with socks), the short-rise design isn't ideal for walks in more than an inch or so of snow.

Best Water Bottle

Kalimdor dog water bottle.

The handy design and size also works for cats.

Some pets may not be comfortable drinking out of this unfamiliar shape.

Heat, stress, and anxiety may cause your pet to become thirstier and more dehydrated than usual. For trips with her small chihuahua, Dr. Love prefers the Kalimdor Portable Dog Water Bottle because of its small size and leak-proof design. This one-handed, two-in-one design has a plastic bottle base that can store up to 19 ounces of water (most bottles only hold up to 16 ounces). The scooped-out top functions as a water bowl that holds up to 2.8 ounces of water. Liquid is released directly into the drinking area by unlocking a switch and pushing a button. You can recollect any unused water in the storage bottle instead of tossing it out. The compact design makes it easy to carry in a travel bag or backpack, or you can loop it around your wrist. Our one note is that we wish this had a built-in filter.

Best Portable Litter Box

Travel cat porta pawty.

You don't have to toss out the litter at every stop.

The collapsible design translates to weak sides.

Finding a decent travel litter box is one of the biggest challenges of traveling with a cat. The Travel Cat Porta-Pawty Travel Litter Box solves multiple problems, including wasting litter. The zippered top and built-in side handle enables you to scoop and go, reusing the same lot of litter along multiple stops. Its construction also helps to block odors, which makes stays at pet-friendly hotels more comfortable for everyone involved. The top-flap design and standard litter box dimensions (19 by 14 by 5 inches) give your cat sufficient room to do their business. The seamless, leak-proof interior is a cinch to clean, and when you're not using the bag, it collapses, folds, and snaps into a rectangle that measures 9.75 by 8.5 by 4 inches. Litter helps the collapsible walls of this box stay up and sturdy, so don't hold back when filling it up.

Best Calming Supplement

Vetoquinol zylkene behavior.

It has a natural, non-sedative calming effect.

It may not be enough to calm some pets.

According to Dr. Rendon, "Zylkene calming supplements are derived from milk protein and recommended by behaviorists." They can be used for cats or dogs and are a good option for owners who want to try over-the-counter remedies before getting a sedating prescription like Gabapentin or Trazodone from their vet. This supplement's active ingredient, alpha-casozepine, has natural calming properties. Although it's derived from cow's milk, it is lactose-free. The dosage is administered according to weight and can be given in its original capsule form or as a powder mixed into food by opening the capsules. Dr. Rendon recommends starting the supplements a few days before travel. Every pet is different, and Zylkene may not be effective on some animals.

Best First-aid Kit

Adventure medical kits me & my dog.

It's a first-aid kit for both you and your dog.

It only covers four days of basic medical needs.

Love hiking with your dog or running on the beach together? Or do you just want to be prepared for everyday outing accidents? This first-aid kit is a two-in-one medical kit you can keep in your car or toss in your backpack before an outdoor adventure. It comes with two separate pouches of medical supplies — one for you and one for your dog — that can cover basic first-aid needs like splinter and tick removal, wound irrigation, cuts and scrapes, and more. There are enough supplies in each kit to last one person and one dog up to four days. Even though it comes with how-to medical guides, it's not meant for severe injuries.

We combed through results from seven different pet product tests to find some of the recommendations in this roundup, specifically looking for the most travel-friendly options. We tested over 130 pet products, including dog food storage containers, dog backpack carriers, dog car seats, car seat covers, cat carriers, dog crates, and GPS collars. Some staple attributes we tested for in each category included design, performance, value, and ease of use. For carriers, crates, and backpacks, we introduced the products to our pets, carried them around in the carrier, crate, or backpack for 10-15 minutes, and noted how comfortable the item was for both ourselves and our pets. We also did a test run through all the features and cleaning. For dog car seats, we drove around with our dogs in the car seat for a week and then cleaned the car seat, again noting how comfortable we both seemed and the ease of cleaning. All tested products were put through real-world testing scenarios in order to accurately assess their overall performance and value for readers and their pets. We also included T+L editor recommendations that they personally use for their own pets for portable pet bowls and grooming wipes.

Check airline and FAA requirements ahead of travel

Nearly every airline has its own rules for flying with a pet. Check with your airline well ahead of your flight to confirm if your animal will be able to fly on the plane. Many airlines accept service animals but limit the qualifications to certain breeds and type of service. Additionally, short-nosed breeds of cats and dogs such as pugs and Persians are often not allowed to fly in cargo due to breathing concerns . Most flights only allow for a maximum number of in-cabin pets per flight or will only fly with pets in the cargo during certain months. It's wise to make a reservation for your pet well in advance to secure them a spot on board.

Consider microchipping your pet

If your pet isn't already microchipped, your upcoming trip may be just the right excuse to get it done. This is to help others identify your pet and locate the owner in case your pet escapes or runs away during travel. Collars also provide this information but can easily slip off in different circumstances. Microchipping your pet is added protection that you'll be reunited if they get lost and may be required for international trips.

Map out walk and bathroom breaks ahead of time

When planning your trips and travel time, be sure to pencil-in some time for your pet to use the bathroom — and find out where they can relieve themselves. In some (but not all) airports, there are dedicated pet relief areas with fake grass where dog owners can take their pets to use the bathroom. Options for cat owners are far fewer, which is why having a portable litter box on hand is so, well, handy.

Frequently Asked Questions

According to Dr. Rendon, one of the most important things you can do when traveling with your pet is to check each state or country's travel requirements well in advance of your trip. "You should contact your veterinarian or check the APHIS Pet Travel website for specific requirements," she says. "You may need a health certificate issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian and approved by an APHIS veterinary officer in order to travel internationally. Your airline may also have specific requirements. Don't wait until the day before you travel to obtain the necessary paperwork!"

You must book a reservation for your pet in advance — some airlines allow you to do it online or through their app, while others will require a phone call.

"If you need to travel with your pet and they are too big to fly in the cabin with you (typically larger than 20 pounds), then cargo is a totally acceptable way to bring them," Dr. Love says. "It is always better to have them in the cabin with you because you can be with them, but that isn't always an option."

Both vets agree that the biggest downside to flying your pet in the cargo is that you're unable to monitor them or give them any anti-nausea or calming medicine as needed. Keep in mind that the cargo area is not temperature controlled and you should avoid flying your pets in very hot or very cold months.

One of the easiest ways to keep your pets safe while traveling is to keep them calm. "Don't wait until the day of travel to introduce your animal to a carrier or crate," suggests Dr. Rendon. "Place a familiar blanket or one of your worn T-shirts in the carrier with your animal so it smells like home. Carriers should be lined with a towel and covered with a disposable wee-wee pad that can be changed if an animal soils the pad mid-trip." She also recommends limiting the size of the meal you feed your pet before traveling in case of nausea.

Dr. Love recommends exercising your pet before travel so they are more relaxed or having someone sit in the backseat with them.

The cost of flying with a pet depends on the airline, where you are flying to, and whether you're flying your pet cargo or traveling with them inside the cabin. For example, Delta charges $95 for domestic flights with a carry-on pet, $75 for flights from the U.S. to Brazil, and $200 for other international flights, and you must contact the airline directly to determine cargo fees. United Airlines charges $125 each way for a carry-on pet for domestic flights. American Airlines charges $125 for a carry-on pet within and between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean (based on each country's entry policy).

Different airlines have restrictions on the age and breed of pets they allow to travel in the cabin. If your trip includes a voluntary stopover or connection of more than four hours, additional fees may apply for each connection segment. Check with your desired airline for specific pricing and restrictions.

Deciding how long your pet should ride in the car with you will be up to your individual pet. Some dogs may get antsy and need to go on their regularly scheduled walks, burn off energy, and use the bathroom. Monitor your pet during the car ride and check for signs of anxiety.

On breezy trips to far-flung cities and hard-hitting hiking trails alike, it’s crucial to load up with the proper dog travel accessories to keep man’s best friend happy. Whether your idea of a good time is lounging in the sun at a hip Airbnb or taking your pupper camping , dogs get cold, need water, and have first aid emergencies just like the rest of us.

We asked a handful of travel pros what they never leave home without when satisfying their wanderlust alongside a furry pal. Here’s what they recommend keeping in a backpack or carry-on to make traveling with a dog easier and safer.

A multi-purpose leash

A harness that offers ultimate control on walks, a car safety harness, a pack for pups, a doggy backpack for human hikers, a travel food carrier, a collapsible travel bowl, a doggie first aid kit, a balm for sore paws, a low-profile travel bed, a packable winter coat, a cozy fleece pullover.

Sometimes, you don’t even know that you have a problem until a brilliant piece of gear comes along and solves it in one fell swoop. The Magic Link is that piece of gear. “It’s my favorite leash for travel, since it can be worn in various ways and allows for hands-free walking,” says Nöel Russell, co-founder and CXO at Whimstay . This no-hands approach—pet owners can wear it around their wrist or waist—is ideal when carrying luggage or trying to use a smartphone while out and about, explains Russell.

Image may contain: Harness

“The Easy Walk harness has been a godsend for hiking,” says Jake Case, editor at Territory Supply . “The front-anchor point gives me more leverage when my dog pulls, making it less obnoxious and easier to control.” Subtle features like this are key when romping around a new city with your furry companion–distractions are high, smells are captivating, plus there are loads of new people. Keeping your dog in check with a sturdy harness will help make both urban and trail adventures more fun and less of a headache.

Traveling at highway speeds on weekend getaways to Joshua Tree and Jackson Hole might feel like a breeze for humans in ergonomic seat belts, but Fido’s often left to fend for himself in the backseat without much recourse in case an accident happens. Kurgo’s Tru-Fit dog car harness slips on and fastens easily, clipping into any ordinary car seat belt. Plus, it’s crash-tested for dogs up to 75 pounds so that even your favorite chonk can stay safe on the road.

Whether it be in the rust-tinted sandstone of Zion or the rolling green hills of the Great Smoky Mountains, if you’re planning to tackle some trails with your pup, it’s a good idea to get them a doggy backpack so they can help schlep any necessary pet gear, like treats and travel bowls. The Baxter dog backpack by Kurgo is a machine-washable rucksack with two saddlebags and eight adjustment points to give a near-custom fit when your pup’s out in the wilderness. Pet owners can choose between “Baxter” and “Big Baxter” sizes to accommodate dogs from 30 to 110 pounds. Heading on a multi-night adventure? Check out the larger Ruffwear Palisades dog backpack , which Kelly Sosa, founder of The Service Dog Connection , says is “ideal for packing in extra dog food, water, and supplies.”

Travel journalist and Traveler contributor Stephanie Vermillion loves toting around her nine-year-old Bichon mix in a K9 Sport Sack when she wants to put in the big miles. “As he gets older, he's not able to go as long as he used to,” she says. “The Sport Sack makes sure he can still be part of the fun, no matter his age.” The brand makes a variety of colorful backpacks for on-the-go humans to bring their dog along in, with features like side ventilation, internal frames, and hip belts for extra support.

Image may contain: Bag, and Cup

On both long-haul road trips to fanciful getaways and quick drives to visit family for the holidays, it’s key to carry and store your dog’s kibble in a safe container. Wilderdog makes it simple to skip the wasteful (and easy-to-rip) plastic bags with their waterproof doggie bag. These whimsical, boho roll-top sacks store up to five pounds of food and come with an adorable, 1.25-cup steel mug to measure out meals.

Image may contain: Accessories, Handbag, Bag, and Headband

The Ruffwear trail runner bowl is an ideal companion for sunshine-spattered hikes and warm, poolside vacations alike. Since dogs stay cool by panting, which can dehydrate them over time, it’s imperative to have a portable way to give them water on the go, and this durable nylon bowl packs up small enough to fit in your pocket. “Keeping water bowls on hand and easily accessible is key to keeping my dogs comfy while we’re out adventuring,” Russell says.

Image may contain: Bag, and Tote Bag

None of us want to think about worst-case scenarios when we’re trying to escape our city woes, but savvy dog owners know how important it is to travel with a pet-centric first aid kit and the name of the nearest vet on hand. The Trail Dog medical kit is designed to be a lightweight, easy-to-stow wellspring of dressings and bandages to soothe injured paws. It even comes with a sterile pair of tweezers to help remove ticks and splinters.

Image may contain: Bottle, Face, Head, Person, and Tape

Let’s face it—dogs’ paws are wont to get rough and cracked, especially if you traipse around on rough pavement, salted roads, or snowy areas. Musher’s Secret is a time-tested remedy of Canadian sled dog drivers, made to act like an invisible boot and protect pups’ feet. This fast-drying, hypoallergenic concoction is composed of food-grade ingredients like beeswax and vegetable oils so that even if your furry mate tries to lick it off, it’s safe.

Image may contain: Cushion, Home Decor, Pillow, Accessories, Handbag, and Bag

At outdoor restaurants and backcountry camps alike, it’s nice to give your pup a dedicated space to lay down that’s insulated from the cold, hard ground. The Highlands dog pad by Ruffwear is a lightweight solution that helps you do just that. City kids can use the pad to help their dog settle quickly, no matter the noise level, while campers will appreciate the extra protection between their dog’s nails and the delicate fabric of their tent. Rachel Popp, co-founder of Big Fish Collective , recommends pet owners pair it with a Kelty Bestie blanket for a complete sleep system that’s “cuddle-worthy for you and your pup, too.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, and Underwear

If you’re the type of traveler that likes to breeze through the airport with only a carry-on or an outdoor adventurer with a few winter hikes on the brain, Ruffwear’s Quinzee jacket is an ultra-packable, uber-warm solution that’ll keep your furry friend toasty without hogging all your luggage space. Made with high-loft polyester insulation that’s designed to mimic the packability of down, this weather-resistant coat features easy-release side buckles to ensure the perfect fit.

Image may contain: Clothing, and Apparel

Sometimes it’s cold but not too cold, and you might find yourself looking for a stylish pullover to keep your doggo comfy when the sun starts to set. Wilderdog’s funky, southwest-inspired fleece jacket comes in fun colors like olive and berry, is made of quick-drying midweight fabric, and features a neoprene neck gaiter for extra warmth. Add in the brand’s lifetime guarantee, and it’s a no-brainer when winter rolls around.

Packing smarter can make all the difference when loading up an overflowing trunk or trying to avoid a checked bag at the airport. But while you worry about making all your stuff more manageable, don’t forget that there’s likely a better solution for your canine traveling companion, too. If you’re still relying on a spare backpack or, worse yet, a plastic bag to carry your dog’s gear, you’re ready for the convenience of a dog travel bag.

With a bag designed for your pet, no space goes to waste. You’ll find dozens of clever designs to carry around your dog’s accessories, with many including on-the-go travel bowls to keep your pup content at each stop. You have numerous excellent options to consider and to help you cut straight to the most worthwhile products, follow our reviews of the ten best travel bags for dogs.

A Quick Comparison of Our Favorites in 2024

The 10 best travel bags for dogs, 1. mobile dog gear week away tote pet travel bag – best overall.

Mobile Dog Gear’s Week Away Tote is the ultimate travel bag, adding more unique features than the average carrier while using almost the same amount of space. With the larger option having two food bags capable of carrying up to 30 cups of kibble, it can handle everything from a weekend trip to the lake to a week-long out-of-town vacation.

Jet setters enjoy comprehensive features to facilitate travel with their pets. Like many dog travel bags, it meets most airline carry-on measurements, and the collapsible bowls and placemats fold up into the bag, storing efficiently to make feeding your dog quick and pain-free at every stop.

While the bag generally has a quality build, the only issue many consumers had involved the zippers easily breaking. Otherwise, the design is practical and effective. Several mesh pouches around the outside provide easy access and organization for frequently needed items. The Mobile Dog Gear bag makes the journey with your dog effortless and worry-free, earning our pick for the best overall travel bag for dogs.

  • Large food bag capacity
  • Several mesh storage pockets
  • Includes ID tag
  • Zippers break easily
  • Not water-resistant

2. PetAmi Dog & Cat Travel Bag – Best Value

The PetAmi Dog & Cat Travel Bag is the best travel bag for dogs for the money; it’s a low-priced, high-quality, and fully functional tote for all of your dog’s belongings. The storage pockets aren’t as numerous as those on some alternative bags, and it doesn’t have the plastic mat for the collapsible bowls, but there’s little you’ll miss out on otherwise with this airline-friendly carrier.

Rather than mesh pockets, the PetAmi bag’s exterior storage compartments use the same water-resistant Oxford covering, keeping all your accessories safe when caught in the rain. The only slight knock against the pockets involves the interior mesh pocket, which lacks a zipper and lets loose items fall out when opening the case.

  • Water-resistant outer cover
  • Leak-proof lining
  • Several color options
  • No mat for bowls
  • Inner mesh pocket doesn’t zip

3. Mobile Dog Gear Weekender Backpack – Premium Choice

The stylish and multi-functional Mobile Dog Gear Weekender Backpack keeps all your puppy’s materials easily accessible. Collapsible food bowls accompany a fold-down non-slip feeding mat and two food bags with space for up to five cups each.

With the undersized capacity, this bag is primarily for smaller dogs. But if you have a weekend getaway or camping trip planned, it could be the perfect solution for any pet. Small touches, like the quilted outer cover, dog bone ID tag, and built-in waste bag dispenser pocket at the front of the pack, elevate the design and enhance the comfort.

  • Waste bag dispensing pocket
  • Fashionable quilted cover
  • Small food bag capacity
  • Limited color options

4. Rubyloo Dog Travel Bag – Best for Puppies

Rubyloo’s The Original Doggy Bag™ promises to make travel more fun with its patented design and 100% lifetime warranty backing the well-built traveler. The water-resistant cover comes in five colors (including a cool camo print), has two collapsible bowls, and includes two food carriers that hold eight cups each.

The Rubyloo dog travel bag is comfortable to carry and supplies some of the best storage features to keep your items handy and secure. Alongside the removable primary compartment divider, you get a front pouch with a zippered pocket, a bottle storage side pocket, a mesh rear pocket to hold a couple of frisbees, and a side pocket with a waste bag dispenser.

  • Ample storage compartments
  • Waste bag dispenser
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Only one available size
  • Not ideal for larger dogs

5. Modoker Dog Travel Bag

The Modoker Dog Travel Bag leaves nothing out, ensuring you have the organization, flexibility, and dependable design you need to travel with confidence. Two closable front pockets join a mesh pocket covering the luggage sleeve, an elastic travel bottle side pocket, and a dual-zippered side pocket, letting you quickly retrieve tissues or dog waste bags.

While the water-resistant pack has plenty of features, a few minor issues prevent it from being the perfect travel bag for dogs. The small containers only fit a total of about 10 cups of food. It’s only ideal for short outings and weekend trips unless you have a small dog. The magnetic buttons on the front pocket also have more potential to come undone, so you must be careful about how you pack.

  • Versatile storage compartments
  • Zippered tissue/bag compartment
  • Small food containers
  • Magnetic clasps are less secure
  • Food bowl colors are random

6. Top Dog Pet Gear Dog Travel Bag

Top Dog Pet Gear’s Dog Travel Bag covers all the essentials at an excellent price point. Two food pouches carry 6.5 cups of food a piece, which is a relatively small amount compared to some other listed items. But if you have a small–medium dog, it could suit you perfectly for an entire week.

Everything is here except the bag dispenser and placemat for the bowls. A spacious magnetic front pocket accompanies a mesh back pocket, an elastic banded water bottle side pouch, and a zippered side pocket on the exterior. Inside the bag, the Velcro divider compartment divider and zippered mesh pocket efficiently store toys, grooming accessories, food, and more.

  • Relatively inexpensive
  • Ideal size for small–medium dogs
  • No placemat for bowls

7. Teamoy Dog Travel Bag

The Teamoy Dog Travel Bag sets itself apart by adding an extra storage section for dog owners who aren’t enjoying enough organization from the traditional travel bag design. Sitting above the primary storage area is a compartment containing a large, zippered mesh pocket under the lid and three additional mesh pockets, giving you four more places to organize your dog’s leashes, toys, grooming tools, and other small items.

The substantial storage space should make you feel confident bringing dogs of any size on a multi-day excursion. And with the larger bag having containers capable of holding close to 30 cups of food, it provides plenty of room for your dog’s kibble and treats.

  • Extra storage compartment
  • Large food containers
  • Zippers prone to breakage

8. BAGLHER Dog Travel Bag

Quality combines with a hint of fashion in the BAGLHER Dog Travel Bag , featuring a durable, water-resistant Oxford outer cover in 12 unique color and print options. Available in two sizes, it has an ample food storage system for several days of adventures and an efficient arrangement that keeps it from feeling bulky.

While the overall construction quality is stout, the BAGLHER loses a few points for its small bowls, which are unlikely to suit a large dog, and the missing exterior rear pocket. Although it has a luggage sleeve, the bag lacks the wide pocket many packs feature, taking away substantial storage opportunities.

  • Durable build
  • Several unique colors and designs
  • Good food storage capacity
  • Small bowls
  • No rear pocket

9. ARCA PET Travel Backpack

The ARCA PET Travel Backpack is comfortable and classy, a compact, lightweight, and easy-to-carry pack that conveniently organizes your dog’s necessities. A single waterproof container efficiently stores up to 15 cups of food, and 11 unique pockets across the interior and exterior offer separate storage for all kinds of equipment. Although it isn’t as spacious as some other packs, it’s one of the easiest to haul around for a day or two.

  • Several storage compartments
  • Comfortable to carry
  • Relatively small capacity

10. beka. Dog Travel Bag

You won’t have to worry about forgetting a thing with the beka. Dog Travel Bag . Two large food storage containers can hold several days’ worth of food for even the heaviest dogs, and the added compartment up top gives you the extra pockets you need to keep all your pet’s items organized. Although the bowls may be too small for a large dog, the overall construction quality and thoughtful features make this one of the best values of any dog travel bag.

  • Only one size available

Buyer’s Guide: Choosing the Best Travel Bags for Dogs

Dog travel bags generally follow similar formulas to the point that you can expect certain features from nearly any product. Totes have food containers, collapsible bowls, and luggage sleeves, while almost every primary compartment uses a Velcro divider. In many areas, manufacturers try not to tinker with what already works. Still, there are a few ways you can distinguish travel bags and make the best choice for your dog and traveling style.

Keeping all your dog’s toys stored comfortably in your bag is a top goal for any owner. Checking the bag’s dimensions and capacity will ensure you can pack everything you need for a multi-day outing.

Some bags offer their internal storage capacity in liters for you to compare. But you can also glean a certain amount by comparing the bag’s exterior dimensions. Sizing is critical for planning your traveling as well. Although most bags are airline-friendly, the slight variations in sizing could be the difference in whether you can add that extra towel or hair brush.

Food Storage Containers

Food storage containers are water-resistant, lined pouches that typically come with travel bags for dogs. They have handles and wipe down easily with a damp cloth. Although the design doesn’t change much, the capacity will, with some capable of holding enough food for over a week and others only handling less than a weekend’s worth.

The number of cups of food that will fit in each container can vary slightly depending on the kibble size. If you can’t find the capacity for the food bags, you can compare their dimensions to get a rough idea of how much they’ll hold.

Two bowls typically come with the pack, with some including a folding placemat. The collapsible bowls usually consist of BPA-free silicone, compressing in for easy storage in the bag, though you can find some bags with bulkier, non-collapsible bowls made of lightweight stainless steel. Plastic bowls should also have a hook hole for a carabiner. Regardless of whether the pack includes the small carabiners, the hanging loop allows you to store your food bowls on the bag strap hook to free up space inside.

If you have a larger dog, prioritize travel bags with wider bowl sizes. Too many consumers buy a pack without considering their 100-pound dog’s needs in this department and end up with an enormous challenge getting them to eat out of undersized bowls. While small dogs can eat out of almost anything comfortably, a 5-inch-wide dog dish won’t be feasible for a dog with a large snout. The bowl size is one reason Mobile Dog Gear’s bag shines: it has 7-inch-wide square bowls.

Special Features

Dog travel bags can sometimes seem like the same product with different labels. The best travel bags for dogs subscribe to similar tried-and-true versatile features, but with a closer look, you can find notable differences beyond the bag’s size.

  • First aid kit (these usually do not contain the first aid materials)
  • Poop bag/wipe dispenser
  • Feeding placemat
  • Treat pouch

Don’t discount the importance of the color, either. Fitting alongside the rest of your luggage, dog travel bags should ideally be an aesthetic match. If the detailed specs aren’t overly critical to your decision, explore the surprising array of bag colors, patterns, and prints to personalize the look and create your style.

Types of Packs

You have two essential styles of dog travel bags available : a tote or a backpack. Totes generally offer the most capacity, exterior storage pockets, and convenient access to anything you need due to their squat and wide shapes. You will usually have three transporting options: a carrying handle, removable shoulder straps, and a sleeve to fix the bag around the pull-up handle on your rolling luggage. A tote is ideal for multi-day trips and the most convenient for storing in a car’s trunk or on an airplane as a carry-on or personal item.

Backpacks are generally taller than they are wide, meaning you may have to go digging if you leave a toy at the bottom of the bag. Exterior storage pockets are often more limited in size and amount. Still, you’ll get many of the same essential features that totes have, such as the collapsible food bowls.

While totes are superior to backpacks for functional storage, backpacks are the most comfortable and convenient. If you plan to go on hikes or short weekend getaways and want to keep your gear on hand without it being cumbersome, a backpack is the way to go.

With a well-rounded set of features, including ample storage capacity, large bowls, and a sturdy build, the Mobile Dog Gear Week Away travel bag will reliably suit dogs of any size and offer the ultimate travel experience. For those looking for great deals, PetAmi and Top Dog deliver affordable, high-quality designs, while Modoker and BAGLHER supply a slew of colorful packs to help you stay fashionable. Dog Travel Kits: Essentials for Traveling with Pets

dog travel kit

Preparing a dog travel kit is crucial for planning a trip away with your dog. A tailored dog travel kit ensures you have all the necessary items in one place, making it easier to manage and organize your dog’s belongings while on the go.

Travel kits typically include essential items such as first aid supplies, medications, and emergency contact information. These readily available items can be crucial for your dog’s health and safety in case of unexpected situations or emergencies during travel.

The Essential Items for a Dog Travel Kit

Here’s a breakdown of what you must pack in your dog travel kit to keep you and your pooch relaxed and happy on your vacation.

Sudden changes in diet can upset a dog’s stomach and lead to digestive issues. Not only do you ensure your dog’s nutritional needs are met by bringing enough of their regular food but eating familiar food also helps them feel secure and comfortable, even in unfamiliar environments. By bringing your dog’s own food, you can avoid potential allergic reactions or digestive upsets if they consume unfamiliar food while traveling. Finding the specific brand or type of dog food your pet prefers may not always be easy, depending on your destination. Bringing enough food ensures you won’t have to rely on finding a suitable replacement while on the road, especially if you’re traveling to remote areas.

In case of unexpected delays or emergencies during your trip, having a sufficient supply of dog food on hand ensures that you can continue to provide for your pet’s needs without added stress or inconvenience.

When packing dog food for a trip, consider the following tips to ensure it stays secure and fresh. Use airtight containers, measure portions, and keep the food accessible.

Water & Bowls

Just like humans, dogs need to stay hydrated, especially when they’re on the go. Traveling can be stressful for dogs, and they may become dehydrated more quickly than usual. Access to fresh water allows them to drink whenever needed, helping prevent dehydration and maintain their health and comfort. Traveling, particularly during hot weather or climates your dog isn’t accustomed to, can increase the risk of overheating. Drinking water helps dogs regulate their body temperature.

Providing fresh water ensures your dog feels comfortable and cared for during travel, which can help reduce stress and anxiety associated with being away from home.

Take portable water solutions for traveling with your dog, such as a portable water bottle or collapsible bowls.

 Bedding and toys

Dogs can feel stressed or anxious in unfamiliar environments, especially when traveling. Bringing familiar items from home, like bedding, toys, and treats, can provide comfort and help reduce anxiety for your dog while away from home. A toy also gives your dog something to focus on and keeps them occupied in the car, reducing the risk of your dog distracting you on your road trip.

Leashes, waste bags and grooming supplies

Dogs can be unpredictable, especially in unfamiliar environments or when excited by new sights and sounds. Keeping them on a leash helps prevent them from running off into potentially dangerous situations, such as busy roads, crowded areas, or encounters with aggressive animals. Many places, including parks, trails, and public spaces, have leash laws in effect to ensure the safety and well-being of dogs and humans. Even well-trained dogs can be prone to sudden impulses or distractions, which could lead to accidents or injuries if they’re not restrained.

Look for leashes made from durable materials, such as nylon or leather, that can withstand wear and tear from outdoor activities and regular use.

Always be prepared and pack plenty of waste bags; it’s always important to clean up after your pets, and even better if you purchase biodegradable waste bags.

Take some grooming supplies, particularly if you’re on an extended vacation or road trip. Keeping your dog clean and well-maintained while traveling helps prevent illnesses and ensures overall well-being.

Regulatory requirements & medication

When traveling with your dog, especially across state, there may be regulatory requirements regarding certain items you need to carry, such as vaccination records or health certificates. A travel kit can help you organize and store these documents conveniently. Also, you may always pack any necessary medications and ensure they are stored correctly during your travels.

Dog Travel Kit Packing Tips

Packing efficiently for your dog’s travel needs involves carefully organizing and prioritizing essential items while maximizing space and accessibility. Here’s some advice on how to pack items for your dog efficiently and suggestions for organizing the dog travel kit within a larger suitcase or backpack.

  • Make a Checklist: Before you start packing, make a checklist of all the essential items your dog will need during the trip.
  • Prioritize Essential Items: Identify the most essential items your dog will need immediate access to during travel, such as food, water, medications, and waste bags. Pack these items in a way that allows for easy retrieval without unpacking everything else.
  • Use Packing Cubes or Bags: Consider using packing cubes or separate bags to organize your dog’s belongings within your larger suitcase or backpack.
  • Maximize Space: Utilize every inch of available space in your suitcase or backpack by strategically packing items to minimize wasted space. For example, roll up towels or bedding to save space and use smaller items to fill gaps or corners.
  • Compact and Collapsible Gear: Opt for compact and collapsible versions of essential items whenever possible to save space. For example, choose collapsible food and water bowls, foldable travel beds or mats, and compact grooming tools that can easily fit into your bag without taking up too much room.
  • Labeling and Organization: Label each packing cube or bag with its contents to make it easier to locate specific items quickly. This will help you stay organized and avoid rummaging through your bag to find what you need.

Overall, a well-prepared travel kit ensures you have everything you need to keep your dog safe, healthy, and comfortable while on the go, whether on a short road trip in a rental car or a longer journey.

Essential Dog Travel Kit: Ensuring Safe and Comfortable Journeys

dog travel kit

Traveling with your furry companion can be an exciting adventure, whether a short road trip or a long vacation. However, ensuring your dog’s safety, comfort, and well-being during the journey is paramount. A well-stocked  dog travel kit  is essential for every pet parent. This article will explore three must-have items for your dog’s travel kit: a dog car seat belt, a dog travel water bottle, and dog poo bag rolls. Let’s dive in and discover how these items can make your journeys with your canine companion stress-free and enjoyable.

Introduction to  Dog travel kit

The dog travel kit is a comprehensive collection of essential items that ensure your canine companion’s safety, comfort, and convenience while on the go. Along with the previously mentioned dog car seat belt, dog travel water bottle, and dog poo bag rolls, there are a few more items worth considering for a complete dog travel kit.

Travel First Aid Kit:

Accidents and minor injuries can happen anywhere, including while traveling. A travel first aid kit specifically designed for dogs is a smart addition to your dog travel kit. The kit should include essential items such as gauze, bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, and any necessary medications your dog may require. Please familiarize yourself with the kit’s contents and know how to use them appropriately to address any minor health issues that may arise during your journey.

Interactive Toys and Chew Bones:

Consider packing a few interactive toys and chew bones in your travel kit to keep your dog entertained and prevent boredom during long journeys. These toys help to stimulate their minds and alleviate anxiety or restlessness while confined in a vehicle or unfamiliar surroundings. Additionally, opt for chew bones that promote dental health and provide a long-lasting and satisfying chewing experience.

By incorporating these additional items into your dog travel kit, you’ll be well-prepared to cater to your dog’s needs, ensuring a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable travel experience for both of you.

Dog Car Seat Belt:

One of the most crucial aspects of traveling with your dog is their safety inside the vehicle. A dog car seat belt is a reliable restraint system that keeps your furry friend secure during car rides. Securely attaching the seat belt to your dog’s harness or collar prevents them from roaming freely inside the car, minimizing distractions and potential accidents.

When choosing a dog car seat belt, opt for an adjustable and durable one. It should be compatible with your car’s seat belt system and give your dog enough freedom of movement while keeping them restrained. By prioritizing safety, you can ensure a smooth and worry-free journey for you and your canine companion.

Dog Travel Water Bottle:

Staying hydrated is crucial for your dog’s overall well-being, especially during travel when dehydration can occur more easily. A dog travel water bottle is a convenient and hygienic solution to keep your dog hydrated on the go. These bottles usually feature an attached water dispenser and a collapsible bowl, making it easy to provide your pup with water whenever they need it.

Look for a leak-proof dog travel water bottle made from safe materials. This ensures you can offer your dog fresh water without mess or contamination. Whether hiking, exploring new places, or simply driving, having a dedicated water bottle for your dog ensures their hydration needs are met throughout the journey.

Dog Poo Bag Rolls:

Being a responsible pet owner means cleaning up after your dog’s messes, even on the road. Dog poo bag rolls are necessary for any travel kit, allowing you to maintain cleanliness and respect the environment.

These rolls typically contain biodegradable bags that are easy to dispense and seal in odors. Ensure that you have an ample supply of dog poo bags to last the entire trip. Remember to dispose of them properly in designated waste bins to keep the surroundings clean and safe.

Conclusion:

Creating a dog travel kit with essential items like a dog car seat belt, a  dog travel water bottle , and dog poo bag rolls is a responsible and caring approach to traveling with your four-legged companion. You can make every journey enjoyable for you and your dog by prioritizing safety, hydration, and cleanliness.

When assembling your dog’s travel kit, remember to choose high-quality, durable products specifically designed for your dog’s comfort and well-being. Visit Dog & Go to explore a wide range of dog travel accessories and find the perfect additions to your travel kit. Remember, by caring for your dog’s needs while on the go, you can create lasting memories and strengthen your bond with your beloved furry friend.

Our Favorite Dog Backpack Carriers Tested With Real Dogs

The Winners

How we picked, more we recommend.

From keeping your hands free while running errands to providing a restful perch for tired paws on long walks, a dog backpack carrier is a great way to bring along a furry friend. To get a feel for different dog personalities and needs, we tested various styles of dog backpacks. Each one was sent to a volunteer tester and their dog to incorporate into their routine. While our dog participants were toted around, our human testers took careful notes. Following a methodology written in advance, our testers evaluated each dog backpack for its performance, quality, comfort (for both  paw-ticipants ), and overall value.

After testing dog backpacks with real dogs, our favorite for small breeds is the Kurgo Nomad Backpack , which resembles a standard backpack with a zippered pocket on the front. The main compartment has a supportive frame and sturdy bottom to provide a pleasant space for dogs under 15 pounds. If you have a slightly heavier dog—up to 25 pounds—the K9 Sport Sack Plus 2 Dog Carrier is our top pick. This style puts dogs in an upright position, with their front legs out and room for their tail, putting their face right over your shoulder.

There were also several other dog backpacks that our testers loved, which may work even better for you and your dog.

Best for Outdoors: Kurgo G-Train Dog Carrier Backpack

Best for Senior Dogs: Apollo Walker Pet Carrier Backpack

Best Airline-Approved: Mr. Peanuts Aspen Series Pet Backpack

Best Sling: YUDODO Reflective Pet Sling Carrier

Best for Commuting: Manhattan PortageSirius Traveler Dog Backpack

Cutest Design: Morik Lion's Den Dog Backpack Carrier

Our Favorite Dog Backpack

Kurgo nomad carrier backpack.

  • Performance 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.5 /5
  • Comfort 4.5 /5

What We Like: Waterproof bottom is sturdy; internal compartment for laptop; zipper pocket and two side pockets; dog can be fully covered; clip to keep dog attached to bag

What We Don't Like: Could use more ventilation for warmer climates

The dual-use Kurgo Nomad Carrier Backpack is suitable for small dogs that weigh less than 15 pounds, and it can be configured as either a backpack or a carrier, including both backpack straps and two beefy, dual-carry handles.

I personally tested this packback with my pomeranian , and we had an additional tester try it out with a slight heavier 11 pound dog. All involved (humans and canines) found the backpack to be very well constructed and well-balanced with several points of adjustment.

The Kurgo Nomad benefits from a classic backpack look that doesn’t immediately suggest a pet carrier. Its broad back panel also offers several ways for your dog to travel, since the compartment can be fully opened or closed, or just allow enough room for a snout to poke out. There’s an interior tether that you can attach to your dog’s collar to keep it in place.

The interior of the Kurgo is lined with waterproof fabric, and the internal pad where your dog sits can be removed and machine washed. The exterior is similarly water-resistant, with a DWR coating that should keep your dog dry next time you’re caught in a downpour together. In addition to the external pockets, which include a large, zippered front compartment and two side stow pouches, the Kurgo Nomad has an interior tablet sleeve.

The bottom of the bag is waterproof with ventilation panels on each side. The zippered main compartment also has two separate zippers, so you can either zip it fully closed or zip up a separate mesh panel for additional ventilation. While we appreciated the multiple ways to ventilate, the mesh is a little too heavy-duty to allow as much airflow as our tester would have liked.

Comes in two colors, blue or red

Best Overall for Medium Breeds

K9 sport sack plus 2 dog carrier.

  • Performance 5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5
  • Value 3.5 /5

What We Like: Wide base to accommodate a dog's tail; mesh side pockets for ventilation and storage; easy to check on dog; even distribution of weight

What We Don't Like: Finding a comfortable fit requires multiple adjustments

If your dog is comfortable in an upright position , the K9 Sport Sack Plus 2 Dog Carrier will make it easy for you to bring it along on adventures. The backpack comes in three sizes, which can accommodate dogs ranging in weight from 8 to 40 pounds. The sizing chart also has length guidelines, so you should measure your dog from collar to base of tail to find the right fit.

Our tester’s senior dog is under 30 pounds and has joint issues, but once inside the backpack it was able to join its human on walks without discomfort. “This product is really helpful and distributes the weight of my dog well,” our tester said.

The Spruce Pets / Alexis Wilson

Once securely inside the backpack, a dog’s head and front legs will remain uncovered for snoot boops, high fives, and paw shakes. The sides are ventilated with small mesh pockets, and a padded back panel helps to keep your dog cool. For a human’s comfort, the bag features wide straps designed to relieve pressure and a padded back panel. However, our tester found perfectly distributing a larger dog’s weight to be a little finicky, taking multiple strap adjustments before they found a comfortable configuration.

The K9 Sport Sack also includes a 14 by 9 inch detachable storage bag, for carrying additional items like a collapsible water bowl, snacks, keys, and more.

Our dog tester weighs slightly under 30 pounds

Why I'm the Expert

I'm Anna Mejorada and my best friend is a brilliant pomeranian named Gidget (you'll spot her throughout this story). She loves to venture outside with me everywhere I go, and in my quest to keep her as comfortable as possible at all times, we have personally tried out dozens of pet carriers, including multiple backpacks. When it comes to a dog backpack, I've learned a sturdy base will help her feel secure and it also helps distribute the pressure I feel on my back and shoulders.

Testing: We selected 14 of the latest, top-performing dog backpacks available and sent each one to a real home with a dog for real-world testing.

Each of our canine participants was placed in and carried around in a dog backpack. Their human companions gathered insights and made notes about their shared experiencs over the course of two weeks and then provided their feedback within the following categories: performance, comfort, quality, and value. They were also asked whether they would recommend the dog backpack they tested.

Equipped with this first-hand information, we ranked and categorized our top picks to simplify your search for the perfect dog backpack to suit your needs, habits, and preferences.

What To Look For

Carrying Capacity: All of the dog backpacks we tested come with recommendations on weight, and some also include measurement guidelines. If your dog exceeds the weight by a pound or two, you might still be able to get it inside. You should also keep in mind how much weight you want to carry while walking around. The more structured dog backpacks, like  the Sirius Traveler Dog Backpack from Manhattan Portage , tend to weigh a little more than foldable styles, like the  K9 Sport Sack Plus 2 Dog Carrier .

Ventilation: To keep your dog cool and comfortable, make sure the bag you select is appropriate for the weather. Mesh panels, drawstring openings, and zippered windows allow for airflow to keep your dog cool in their backpack but may also leave it exposed to the elements. Of course, for the ultimate in airy ventilation, try giving you pup a ride in one of these  bike dog baskets .

Storage: A carrier with built-in storage in the form of a pocket, pouch, or strap for items like a leash, a collapsible bowl, or even your keys are very beneficial for keeping everything organized and streamlined. You don't want to add too much weight to the backpack, but having a backpack carrier with a place for your dog's essentials will go a long way when you are out.

Kurgo G-Train Dog Carrier Backpack

  • Comfort 4 /5

What We Like: Water-resistant covering with reflective strips; adjustable hip, chest, and shoulder straps; storage compartment; padded back

What We Don't Like: Placement of optional stabilizing rods reduces internal space for dog

Best for Outdoors: Made with waterproof, dirt resistant fabric and featuring reflective strips and a sturdy base, the Kurgo G-Train Dog Carrier Backpack is designed for bringing your dog along on outdoor excursions.

The Spruce Pets / Charles Usher

“My dog was adequately supported, and I could walk around hands-free comfortably and set the pack down with him in it if needed,” remarked our tester, whose dog slightly exceeds the manufacturer’s suggested weight of up to 25 pounds.

Padded shoulder straps, along with an adjustable strap at the sternum and hip, offer support and help to alleviate pressure. However, when the backpack is on the bag is designed so that dog and human are facing in opposite directions. For our tester, this aspect of the backpack made it feel like the weight of their dog was also pulling away. The carrier comes with two optional stabilization rods that can be placed inside, but that slightly reduces the interior space, and our tester found installation to be tricky.

Mesh on both sides provides ventilation along with slim pockets for easy access to anything you want to keep on hand, like a water bottle or snacks. An internal padded pocket can accommodate a laptop, and there are loops on the exterior for attachment of other items.

Recommended for dogs up to 25 pounds

Apollo Walker Pet Carrier Backpack

What We Like: Mesh top and sides with ability unzip windows; sturdy yet light construction; padded shoulder straps; strap at sternum and waist

What We Don't Like: Bulkier than other styles

Best for Senior Dogs: If you want to give your dog a place to rest while continuing with your walk, this sturdy dog backpack will allow you to continue enjoying the outdoors together. Our tester was pleased with the lightweight construction of the Apollo Walker Pet Carrier Backpack, and their senior toy poodle had plenty of space to relax.

The Spruce Pets / Valerie de Leon

With mesh sides and top, your dog will be able to feel the wind across its little furry body to keep it cool. You can also unzip each mesh panel to let your dog poke its head out, and an internal clip that attaches to a collar or harness will keep your dog securely inside the backpack. For the wearer of the dog backpack, thick padded straps, along with a sternum and waist strap, will alleviate pressure on the back and distribute your dog’s weight.

The stable construction of this dog backpack offers a protected encasement for your pup, but you may find it more difficult to store, because it takes up more space.

Tested with a 10 pound Toy Poodle

Mr. Peanut's Aspen Series Airline Approved Backpack Pet Carrier

What We Like: Dog can enter from the sides and the front; seat belt attachment for use in car; removable fleece pad inside; side pockets are large enough to carry a water bottle

What We Don't Like: No chest strap, which our tester felt was needed for support

Best Airline-Approved: Streamline your airport experience with the Mr. Peanuts Aspen Series Pet Backpack. “The build alone gives you comfort that your pet is comfortable on your back,” shared our tester who found the additional storage pockets and the removable fleece pad to be highly convenient for daily use and while traveling. The bag is designed for use as a pet carrier on commercial flights, but you should always confirm with your airline provider before arriving at the airport.

The Spruce Pets / Neo Ruiz

The backpack features breathable mesh on both sides, the front, and the top, and all four placements can be unzipped for access and viewability. Our tester found the adjustable shoulder straps with padding to be comfortable but felt that a sternum strap would make the backpack feel more secure. It also folds up easily for storage.

Exterior dimensions are 18 x 14 x 9 inches

YUDODO Reflective Pet Sling Carrier

What We Like: Strap has a pocket for a phone; drawstring closure; reflective strip

What We Don't Like: Does not offer as much padding or structured protection as other carriers on our list

Best Sling Carrier: For small dogs that tend to be anxious, the cross-body design of this carrier will keep your furry friend close by. It distributes the weight of the dog more evenly than a shoulder bag and gives you the hands free experience of a backpack.

Our tester selected the medium sized YUDODO Reflective Pet Sling Carrier for their 12-pound dog. She felt that it offered ample space to keep her dog protected and secure without feeling restricted.

The Spruce Pets / Shannon Amann

The lightweight sling weighs less than a pound on its own, has a drawstring opening, and is made with a breathable mesh. The adjustable strap has a large buckle closure and a pocket designed for a smartphone. Our tester, who also has a baby at home, found the sling to be very comfortable and convenient for taking her child in a stroller and her dog in the sling on walks and running errands.

Available in seven colors

Manhattan Portage Sirius Traveler Dog Backpack

  • Quality 4 /5

Best For Commuting: The Sirius Traveler Dog Backpack from Manhattan Portage offers comfort for canines and their human companion. “This backpack gave us an added sense of security, and we really appreciated the attention to detail for the dog and the pet parent that was put into it,” remarked our tester.

The Spruce Pets / Manichanh Naonady

The parcel is designed to stand on its own, making it easier to place your dog inside, where it will find a cushioned base. The bag is recommended for dogs under 15 pounds and is designed to give a dog plenty of space to move around as it pleases. An interior clip attached to a collar or harness will keep your dog safely inside, and a mesh panel at the top can be unzipped without your worrying about your dog escaping.

Each side has a mesh panel for airflow and a deep pocket with an elastic top. Our tester used the side pockets for walking essentials like a retractable leash and a collapsible water bowl. For more valuable items like your keys and phone, the front of the bag has a zippered compartment. Adjustable shoulder straps, a sternum strap, and padding along the back add comfort and help to distribute the backpack’s weight.

Recommended for dogs weighing up to 15 pounds

Morik Lion's Den Pet Backpack Carrier

What We Like: Very lightweight with a sturdy base; padded shoulder straps and adjustable waist strap adds stability; breathable mesh panels on each side; decorative lion ears, mane, arms, and tail add a touch of whimsy

What We Don't Like: Plush accents are not chew resistant

Cutest Design: The eye-catching design of the Lion's Den Dog Backpack Carrier from Morik is practical, sturdy, and lightweight. While testing with an eight-pound Pomeranian, we found it convenient and comfortable to wear as a front-pack, keeping our doggie tester in full view while our hands remained free. The padded straps are adjustable and well positioned to give you and your dog a delightful experience, and the adjustable waist strap adds an extra layer of welcomed stability and support for the back of the wearer.

The Spruce Pets / Anna Mejorada

To get your dog inside, the top portion has a zipper located underneath the mane that glides open and close. Once your pup is seated inside, there is a leash tether connection and a firm padded platform with nylon fabric on one side and cozy fleece on the other. With the lion's mane portion zipped up, the design allows a dog's head to pop out. For security, a built-in toggle cord covered in soft fabric gives you the ability to customize the size of this opening to best fit around your dog's neck. For airflow, the carrier features mesh panels on each side along with elastic rimmed pockets with ample space to securely stash a leash in one and a collapsible water bowl in the other. Morik includes a bright yellow collapsible water bowl with each purchase, but we found it to be rather large for our small dog.

To find the right size for your dog, we highly recommend measuring their height while they are sitting down along with their current weight. The medium size is recommend for dogs up to 10 pounds, and the large is suitable for dogs up to 20 pounds. The plush lion legs, tail, and ears are adorable, but if you have a dog that loves to chew, they will likely find these accents irresistible.

Comes in two sizes

Yes, backpacks that are designed to carry a canine are safe for very small to medium-sized dogs. You should select a dog backpack that provides enough space to keep your dog comfortable and provides support for you and your dog. Dog backpacks are not interchangeable with regular backpacks.

Yes, but just like with a backpack carrier for a cat , you need to find the backpack that works for you and your pet. You need to be comfortable carrying your dog on your back, and your dog needs to be comfortable inside the backpack. Some dog backpacks allow for a dog to sit and lay (more likely for smaller doggos) while others, like our pick for medium breeds, the K9 Sport Sack PLUS 2 , puts the dog in an upright position, which might not be comfortable for all dogs. Pay attention to your dog for any signs of discomfort .

No, some dogs are too big to fit into a dog backpack. You should also consider how much weight you want to carry on your shoulders and back to help you determine whether a dog backpack works for you and your pupper. If you usually carry your dog in a bag, then a dog backpack will probably be an easy transition and a welcomed respite for one side of your body.

Strict rules about flying with dogs start Thursday, after months of confusion

Portrait of N'dea Yancey-Bragg

Summer is a busy travel season for both people and their pups.

Heather Blas, a pet relocation specialist at Continental Pet Relocation, was already trying to navigate the hectic time for moving and seasonal airline restrictions when a slew of new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requirements for bringing dogs into the United States "turned things upside down." As the deadline for the new rules drew closer, she constantly scoured the CDC's website for the latest guidance and asked for advice from fellow pet shippers around the world who were hearing contradictory information.

"We started out as kind of a task force like, 'let's make sense of this, let's put all this together so we can have (the) correct information for people to get their dogs into the U.S.,' " Blas said. "And it's just become a circus, a literal circus, as clear as mud trying to relay the information to people."

The new requirements from the CDC are aimed at preventing the spread of rabies and go into effect Thursday. The change prompted multiple airlines to stop allowing dogs to travel to the U.S. with their families altogether, causing headaches for everyone from military families and diplomats to pet shippers and animal rescue organizations.

"The way the CDC has implemented these regulations for a dog coming into the U.S. was just, I don't even know the vocabulary for how poorly it was executed and communicated," Blas said.

What do the new rules say?

The CDC announced in May that beginning Aug. 1, dog owners must complete a new form and all dogs entering the U.S. must be over six months old, have a microchip and “appear healthy upon arrival.”

Additional restrictions and requirements apply depending on where the dog was vaccinated and if the dog has recently been in one of the more than 100 countries identified as high risk for rabies. A dog might have to pass a blood test or be forced to quarantine for 28 days in a CDC-registered facility, the costs of which fall back on owners, according to the CDC’s website. It can also be difficult to provide proof of a dog's whereabouts, especially one that was a stray.

The CDC said in a statement announcing the changes that the new regulations build on lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic when the importation of dogs from countries with a high risk of rabies was temporarily suspended.

The CDC did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the criticism of the new rules from travelers and industry experts.

"The regulation also more closely aligns with the World Organisation for Animal Health’s standards for the international movement of dogs from countries with a high risk of dog rabies," the statement said. "Furthermore, it addresses recent challenges seen with international dog importations, such as fraudulent documentation and dogs housed in unsafe conditions if they didn’t meet requirements for entry to the United States."

If a dog was vaccinated in another country and has traveled through a high-risk country, it must also now enter the U.S. through one of six ports where there is an animal care facility, like the ARK Import Export Center at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, according to Elizabeth Schuette, president and CEO of the ARK. Schuette is worried the new restrictions will dramatically increase the number of dogs that come through her facility, which handles transport for not only dogs and cats but also horses and zoo animals.

“The biggest concern that I have is being able to provide the quality service that we're known for and continue that with possibly this huge volume of animals coming,” she said.

According to the CDC, airlines will also be required to create an air waybill for each dog transported to the U.S., a document Schuette said was previously only required for dogs being transported as cargo. Airlines can request a waiver for this rule, but several, including Lufthansa , Finnair , Swiss International Air Lines , and Austrian Airlines, initially announced they would no longer allow dogs to fly to America in the cabin or in baggage hold as a result.

"Trying to implement that on a very short period of time is virtually impossible," Schuette said.

Jorg Waber, a spokesperson for Lufthansa, told USA TODAY existing bookings for dogs won't be affected, provided that all CDC requirements are met, but new bookings for dogs for flights on or after Aug. 1 will only be accepted at six airports in Washington, D.C., New York City, Atlanta, Miami, Los Angeles and Philadelphia. Marjo Hamalainen, a spokesperson for Finnair, said the airline has applied for permission to continue transporting dogs to the United States without an air waybill.

Lawmakers sent multiple letters to the CDC raising concerns and asking officials to delay implementation of the new rules, which are meant to prevent the reintroduction of the viral disease that's transmitted through biting.

Rabies was eliminated from dogs in the U.S. in 2007. About a million dogs enter the country each year, and since 2015, four rabid dogs have been found entering the U.S., The Associated Press reported . Jennifer Skiff, director of international at Animal Wellness Action, said the fact that the handful of cases were caught showed the system was working as intended.

“It’s an overreach,” she said of the new regulations. “It's the government getting involved in something that they shouldn't have been getting involved in because the process worked already.”

Major U.S. airlines including American, Delta, United and Southwest say the new CDC rules do not change their policies around carrying pets, but all said passengers must fill out the paperwork as required. Delta and American said they are pausing pet shipments in their cargo divisions.

Military families ‘blindsided’

The sudden changes in dog transportation were a “huge blow” to many military and diplomatic families, according to Liz Hensel, the 2024 AFI Marine Corps Spouse of the Year.

“When the CDC came out with their new policy, it completely blindsided not only military families but the diplomatic community as well,” said Hensel, also CEO of Leave No Paws Behind USA.

As a result, Hensel said many families are now scrambling to find pet shippers, a much more expensive alternative to flying with your dog. Hensel said when she brought her two dogs to Israel, where her family is based, it cost about $400 to take them on her flight. She estimated that using a pet shipper to return to the United States could cost as much as $3,000.

Service members can be reimbursed for up to $2,000 worth of expenses for moving a pet internationally and $550 for domestic relocation, a change Hensel spent years lobbying for. But as demand for pet shippers increases after the recent CDC changes, Hensel said she expects the cost to transport dogs internationally to rise well past that.

“It makes me feel a little defeated,” she said. “I fought so hard for the stipend and then for this to come back, and the cost is even to go higher, that $2,000 is not even going to do that much anymore.”

Animal rescue may have to halt operations

For Anna Umansky, co-founder of Friends of Sochi Dogs , the new rules could shut down her dog rescue operations in certain countries. Umansky said the nonprofit does most of its rescue work in Ukraine , which – like nearly all of the other countries it operates in – is considered high risk for rabies.

Umansky said her organization had flights scheduled for dogs and their accompanying volunteers throughout August, including some on Lufthansa, that will have to be moved or canceled as they make a “mad dash” to comply with the new rules. She said the nonprofit considered using a pet shipper or cargo service but “the prices are astronomical” on top of the fees they’ll incur to revaccinate and potentially quarantine the dogs.

“We're trying to figure things out, but I honestly don't know, given these expenses, if we'll continue to be able to rescue animals from there,” she said.

Umansky said the requirement that dogs vaccinated outside the U.S. be revaccinated upon arrival even after they pass a blood test proving they are immune to the disease is particularly onerous and seemingly medically unnecessary.

When asked about the requirement, spokesperson David Daigle said the CDC can't verify the protection provided by rabies vaccines administered to dogs outside the United States, and studies show it's safe to administer multiple doses of rabies vaccines to dogs even over a short time.

“It's disappointing, it's frustrating, and it's really, really upsetting,” Umansky said.

Your dog will enjoy the rock pools and exploring Gateholm, a tidal island with the remains of an ancient settlement, while you marvel at the surrounds here.

Premier League new kits 2024-25: every home and away shirt ranked

W e are approaching the start of the Premier League season , a time of year beloved by football fans, football clubs and their treasured extended family of official partners.

Mere days now until the best 20 teams in England can finally end all the talking and focus on what this is all about: unleashing their chosen Asian sportsbook and casino platform and having them battle their rivals’, like gambling Pokemon.

Such is the excitement, the overwhelming majority of teams take this opportunity to launch a new home and away kit every year. But there are some early signs of a turning tide in this area. For the third year in a row Brentford stick with one of their kits in its second year (home, it was away last season) and Luton are doing the same with their home kit this season two, albeit in the Championship.

Tough to imagine the rest of the teams will opt to leave any money on the table given PSR, there will always be a healthy proportion of fans who buy a new shirt every season. But imagine the PR win if a Champions League regular said we’re sticking with this kit for two years. It can go the other way, of course. We should all be grateful we’ve seen the last of the upsettingly bright 2023/24 Arsenal away kit.

Here’s who is making what this season in the top flight:

And here is our official and binding ranking, beginning with the worst. Only Aston Villa on the naughty step this year with their away kit yet to be released, which will be slotted in when available:

39. Wolves (away)

For a long time the kneejerk reaction to a bad shirt was to say it looked like a training top. Then training tops took offence and became largely amazing, so we need a new insult. Wolves and their new friends Sudu (backed by Chinese owner Fosun) have generously provided it: This looks like a fan-made concept kit. Dreadful. Sure it’s just a trick of the angle but the socks also look to have the dimensions of a disappointingly small Christmas stocking.

38. Southampton (away)

Yikes. It’s certainly… bold? Do you really want to do that shade of yellow, that patterning, that sponsor all at once? You do? Well, you’re the boss, Puma. Or rather, we’re too frightened to argue in case you come up with something even worse. Quite, quite unpleasant.

37. Bournemouth (away)

You know when you’re redecorating the bathroom, strip back the wallpaper and find the previous decor, from a time that taste forgot? Like any normal person you post the picture on social media and have a jolly good laugh before destroying it and replacing it with something nicer. You do not launch it as a kit and charge £65 for it. “BJ88” certainly feels like someone from China is laughing at us too.

36. Leicester City (away)

Amusing that the slightly risqué spraypainted pattern maintains an exclusion zone around the ghastly sponsor. Colour a bit vomit-y, after a big night out on a lethal combination of Advocaat and salmon, which I suppose is one way to enliven an all-black kit.

35. Nottingham Forest (away)

Come on. The despairing sort, not the exultant “halved lead with 10 minutes left” sort. Maybe the pink and navy works, maybe the line patterns too, but not together and certainly not if you’re also inviting a self-described “leading digital sports platform”. Take a wild guess what that is a euphemism for.

34. Crystal Palace (away)

My, what a large eagle you have. Good cleaned-up crest, tasty cuffs but this trend for enormous animals (cf. Wolves away. Two counts as a trend) dominating the conversation must be resisted. You wouldn’t tolerate it from a big dog in the pub and we should not allow it on our away kits either.

33. Tottenham Hotspur (away)

Taking heavy inspiration from the 85-87 away shirt but fouling it up with distracting stripes, oddly mismatched shorts and one too many colours on the sleeve and short cuffs. Collar looks like an operator error.

32. Southampton (home)

A city-wide day of mourning was declared* when Southampton switched kit suppliers from Hummel to Puma. But there is little wrong with the basic template here. Red side panels are perhaps a bit too obtrusive but from a straight-on angle the curved-in bottom looks neat. Sponsor logo is a hospital pass though, and just too jarring to go from three years of Danish class to German route-one.

*NB: untrue.

31. Crystal Palace (home)

Like when Don Henley invited Joe Walsh and Glenn Frey for dinner but there was only space for one: too many Eagles! Only Chelsea can rival Palace for most liberties taken with home kits in recent years and this is another brave attempt to break new ground but not a successful experiment. Looks like a weird thought you have just before you fall asleep.

30. Nottingham Forest (home)

Kaiyun you kick it? No you can’t, despite the presence of football.jpeg from the Clipart directory. Kaiyun you bet using it? Yes, but not in the UK. Perfect. The slanted stars forming in the pattern are pleasing as is the use of Adidas’ rear short swirl, à la Spain and several others at the last Euros. Just difficult to get past that sponsor which is aesthetically upsetting on about six different levels.

29. Everton (away)

New shirt trend klaxon! Minimalist take on emblem klaxon! Tenuous klaxon klaxon! Unfortunately the luminous colour used for the Everton lock-up here makes it look like an inverted logo of early 90s kitwear manufacturers Influence, which will rouse complicated memories for fans of Portsmouth, Cardiff and Birmingham. Good 3D Tetris sublimated pattern, but too muted beyond that to stir strong feelings.

28. West Ham (away)

“Cockney kit” allegedly so perhaps only worn in London derbies or when the team bus passes within audible distance of the Bow Bells. Not a fan of all-black in anything other than rugby but enough contrast here with the claret and white for a David Moyes-style narrow pass. Sorry to bring him up, West Ham fans, but you do realise he’ll be back at some point in the next few years? You can sack him any time you like, but he will never leave.

27. Manchester City (home)

Oh god, don’t make me look up the reasoning behind that silliness on the collar and arm cuffs. Looks like Aramaic script, which would be a good way to disguise anything you did not want to show up on your balance sheet. Manchester City deny all wrongdoing. Perhaps that is what it translates as? Look closer, it’s just the numbers 0161, the Manchester area code. The official justification, presented without judgement but a soundtrack of hard laughs, is as follows: “Manchester’s 0161 is more than an area code. It’s an accent, a swagger, a sense of what being Mancunian is all about – even if you aren’t Mancunian.” Bases: covered. Barrel: scraped. Just missing the use of “iconic” to describe an area code for landlines no one uses any more. So silly, and ruins what is otherwise an acceptable kit.

26. Arsenal (away)

Ticking many vogueish boxes. Black, asymmetric colours, simplified emblem. Sure to win plenty of friends on the mean streets of Islington (sure one of them is mean) but the graphite-y trim is one idea too many which tips it into the middling category. Ctr+Z that unnecessary final flourish and we’d have had a kit on our hands.

25. Fulham (away)

Another example of how to undermine simple idea with unnecessary complications. Red and black stripes are of course positive, who doesn’t enjoy the work of AC Milan? But like the synthpop record label says: Italians do it better. They know not to add too much distracting white. The sponsor or the sleeve stripes, you can have one, not both. Fundamentally sound but look at Fulham’s 2008/09 version of this for an example of how to do it correctly:

24. Liverpool (away)

Just cannot remember that minty turquoise ever elevating a kit, especially not when it is the only interesting choice on an all-black set. Safe and sedate.

23. Everton (home)

Farewell Hummel, hello Castore. What’s the worst that can happen? Oh, the badge fell off during a pre-season game? Well never mind, at least the players were tough to pick up at corners due to their slippery sweat-moistened shirts. Fourteen stripes on the socks, in tribute to the time of starting 11s plus only three subs, when Everton last won a trophy. Sensible with a subtle pattern but shame (as can be said for about 85 per cent of Premier League teams) about the sponsor.

22. Aston Villa (home)

Ozzy Osbourne launched this because he absolutely loves both betting and trading, like the chest and sleeve here tell him to. A boon that Villa have listened to concerned family members and left unsuitable partner Castore, but this first try from Adidas is caught between bland and busy.

21. Fulham (home)

A few years since it captured the public’s imagination on the front of Leeds’ shirts, but still no idea how to pronounce SBOTOP or why the second O is stylised as a zero. Still, happy chap to the left looks ready to party, or to place a substantial wager with a leading online gaming brand. Cannot read sleeve sponsor but presumably there’s a “t” after “Be”. Fine.

20. Chelsea (home)

Lord forgive me, I don’t hate it! Seemingly the consensus pick for dud of the season but pleasingly unusual to my eyes, even if it does look like a lava lamp. Clearly unwise to extend the joke onto the shorts but in this era of a home shirt being worn perhaps 20-30 times then being cast off forever we can handle some experimentation. Cult classic, not best seller.

19. Brighton and Hove Albion (home)

As with every Brighton home kit for the past 12 years you have a pleasant idea here marred by the decision to grant the sponsor a billboard space right in the middle. Plenty of other stripey teams find a way to incorporate a sponsor without creating this exclusion zone. American Express is so wedded to its precious sky blue, which would not be legible as a contrasting colour on blue stripes, so Brighton are forced to accommodate it this way. It really makes its presence felt this year, taking attention away from the neat way the white pinstripes fade in from the top down.

18. Newcastle United (home)

Ha’way the conveniently generous sponsorship deal with a company from Saudi Arabia! Back with Adidas after three years with Castore. They’ll always have the 4-1 against PSG but yeah, seriously, pick up all of your unsold tracksuit bottoms by COP Friday or they’re going onto the pavement outside the megastore. Few distinguishing remarks but this kit always suffers in comparison to the objectively perfect blue star Brown Ale variants.

17. Leicester City (home)

Good to have Leicester (home) back in the land of the Premier League kit ranking. You know where you are with Leicester (home), nothing drastic has been done with it since 1989 (pinstripes). Of course it could do without Bitcoin Pac-Man on his way to eat into your previously stable savings account, but otherwise does a very solid job.

16. Brighton and Hove Albion (away)

Again, tasty. Again, Brighton are showing their sponsor’s logo so much respect it’s like they’re a cowed Conference South team playing a giant in the FA Cup third round and allowing them to do whatever they like before their manager tears into them at half time. Bold attempt here to pair it with smart jeans and chinos:

Nice try lads but you’re not getting into the nice bit at Goodwood wearing a football shirt.

15. Brentford (away)

Can count the number of pink football shirts I’ve enjoyed on one hand and they mostly belong to Palermo. It’s the unusual darker shade of purple making this work for me which somehow takes the edge off a challenging sponsor. Decent.

14. Wolves (home)

Everybody had a go at centralised emblems about 30 years ago. We all had a jolly good laugh but largely agreed it was a dead end. No harm in asking the question again now, enough time has passed, but you’re not seriously just going to leave the maker’s mark hanging out there on the left are you? Looks like they’ve forgotten to turn off left justification on wolves-kit.doc. A shame, it’s the only thing marring this.

13. Manchester United (away)

Very third kit energy. Pattern which initially looks like exploding stars is in fact made up of a series of Ms, which took me a while to realise. Not often you can say a football shirt rewards repeat viewings. Somewhere between elegant and dull.

12. Brentford (home)

Year two for Brentford in this home shirt. A more complacent kit reviewer might just copy and paste last year’s verdict, but instead I will reflect on the cycle of renewal that a new season brings, the bittersweet feelings of time passing at speed once you enter middle age and what new terrible things Neal Maupay is going to do while wearing this.

11. Arsenal (home)

Love the bold blue, less convinced by the hostile takeover being staged by the white on the sides which reduces the red to a B-plot in its own story. The b stands for “bib”. Pivoting to the cannon instead of the 22-year-old but still “new” crest is a positive development. Combo of massive sponsor and ever-growing Adidas presence less so.

10. Bournemouth (home)

This is more like it from the brave boys and girls of BJ88 and their official football content supply partners Bournemouth. Rarely-seen tasteful use of gold as accent colour with stripes thick and bold, like a teenager hepped up on alcopops. Available with a special edition 125th anniversary emblem which is golded-out. Of course this costs an extra £10. You can also have the fixture and date of the anniversary game added to the central stripe. Of course this costs an extra £5.

9. Tottenham Hotspur (home)

Usually in favour of sponsor consistency but we’ve had so many similar and perfectly reasonable Tottenham AIA kits now I fear for my future ability to tell one season from the next based on the shirt. A highly troubling thought. Launch promo uses classic conceit of players looking moody in a pub that has delayed its opening for a few hours to accommodate a photoshoot, thus upsetting half a dozen loyal problem drinkers. But they will cheer up when they see Sonny and JMadz creasing up about the next escalatory chapter in the darts prank war with Maupay:

8. Manchester United (home)

Yes, that is certainly a Manchester United home kit. You fear the worst with Snapdragon, but turns out it’s a charming old-timey business which makes processors for your laptops, your phones, your Jonny Evanses. Lacking distinguishing features but no disaster either.

7. Ipswich Town (home)

All of the ingredients are here for a total classic yet it falls just short. You’ve got the local(ish) boy made (very) good as a shirt sponsor, Ed Sheeran promoting his never-ending tour, some delicious pinstripes and an uncomplicated collar and cuffs. Especially fond of the shorts, which are exceedingly clean. Think it’s just those symbols on the front letting it down. As if listening to Sheeran wasn’t bad enough now he wants you to do maths.

6. Newcastle United (away)

Nothing is going to curry favour more with a fanbase than a throwback to a beloved former kit, so here we have Adidas revisiting its 1995-96 shirt worn by all your old favourites: Paul Kitson, John Beresford, Steve Watson… I forget the others. It wisely ditches the grandad collar of that shirt for a simpler option and otherwise falls the right side of affectionate tribute rather than opportunist knock-off, like when Puma cheekily tried something similar in 2018.

5. Chelsea (away)

Stop the count, we have a winner for stupidest names for colours. Light beige (“Guava Ice”), orange (“Team Orange”) and blue (“Rush Blue”). Nevertheless this is quite nice (“Moderately gratifying”) and makes intelligent use (“Wise deployment”) of the same template spotted on the Euro 2024 kits worn by Gareth Southgate’s England (“Brave Heroes” / “Shameful Chokers”).

4. Liverpool (home)

A new dawn has broken, has it not? And hang about, what is going on with those lines, nothing is where I left it, where did you go Jurgen, why did you go Jurgen? HELP. Fun! Obviously demented collar, but it has been years since Liverpool have worked in any yellow to their home kit, which featured for their fairly successful decade from 1975 onwards. A good omen for Arne Slot?

3. Ipswich Town (away)

Maroon is having an overdue moment in kitland. A risky move in the wrong hands but Umbro knows what it is doing, even if it has absent-mindedly coloured in the middle of its logo while bored in a meeting. Well chosen blue and gold accents and some silly patterns housed in diamonds. An appropriate outfit for a team ready to ruffle a few feathers / lose heavily at home to Liverpool on the opening weekend and never truly recover.

2. Manchester City (away)

City have nodded in the direction of their memorable 1998-99 kit before. This of course was the outfit they wore when winning the Division Two playoff final against Gillingham, the big bang which, several football millennia of evolution later, led to Manuel Akanji passing it out of the back while operating as an inverted football back. This is an explicit re-make, Puma just fiddling with the margins of the Kappa original. I realise I shouldn’t, I realise it runs contrary to reason, but I really like it. The blue brings balance to the luminosity, the black box to accommodate the sponsor feels deliberate rather than obtrusive, and despite the colour scheme there is a classicism to the design. Obviously you would be insane to wear it out, but as a kit it is a surprise success story.

1. West Ham (home)

Go on, you try and find fault with this. No, you cannot say ‘big betting sponsor’ or we’d be disallowing most of the kits on this list. Refined, uncomplicated and immediately identifiable. No notes.

Down for ‘raw dogging’ experts share upsides of forced boredom on flights.

stock image of a young Woman Suffering From Airsickness In Airplane

Lately, it seems everyone’s got a raw dog in this in-flight fight.

Air travel optimizers have sworn by the latest bizarre trend to penetrate airplane culture — raw dogging — wherein passengers endure a long-haul flight with nothing but their thoughts to keep them occupied. The benefits of forced boredom, however, are still up for debate .

The provocative term has flown off the social media charts this summer as clout-chasing travelers — mostly men — tout having spent half a dozen hours or more in silence on an airplane in a show of physical discipline and mental stamina.

travel kit for dog

“Just raw-dogged a 7-hour flight (new personal best),” Wudini, a UK DJ, bragged to his audience in a TikTok post with over 13.2 million views. “No headphones, no movie, no water, nothing.”

“Incredible,” he added. “The power of my mind knows no bounds.”

Seven hours is child’s play to Instagram user Damon Bailey, who shared his personal best,13-and-a-half hours between Shanghai and Dallas, without any form of entertainment.

“It’s quite tough, honestly,” the 34-year-old from Miami, Florida told BBC News — though he has no plans to stop, he added. “I like the challenge, for sure.”

Even bona fide athletes are doing it , including Manchester City soccer star Erling Haaland, who boasted his “easy” seven-hour streak with “no phone, no sleep, no water, no food.”

@oiwudini 🧘🏻‍♂️ #fyp ♬ The Only Thing They Fear Is You – De8ed

Proponents of raw dogging have suggested the phenomenon was inspired by Idris Elba’s character, Sam Nelson — who withstands a nearly eight-hour flight from Dubai to London without amenities after crooks commandeer his plane — on the Apple TV+ series “Hijacked.”

Despite Elba’s enviable status as an on-screen hero, critics of raw dogging IRL have shamed the “psychopathic” practice as some experts have warned against the dangers of sleep, food and water deprivation on planes. The dry in-flight environment causes dehydration inside and out, which is why it’s so important to stay hydrated amid air travel, according to travel experts who recently spoke to Daily Mail , adding that there’s also no sense in abstaining from snacks or sleep if your body is telling you it needs those essentials.

However, there’s an upside to this ascetic air travel trend — through the lens of mindfulness. Business psychologist Danielle Haig claimed could provide “an opportunity to recharge mentally, gain new perspectives,” she told the BBC.

Haig believes interest in raw dogging suggests “a collective yearning for balance as people seek to reclaim their mental space and foster a deeper connection with their inner selves.”

Relatedly, psychology scholar Sandi Mann, author of “The Science of Boredom,” argues that long stints of silence can be a good thing for those of us who spend our days staring at screens.

“We need to reduce our need for novelty and stimulation and whizzy-whizzy bang-bang dopamine, and just take time out to breathe and stare at the clouds — literally, if you’re on a flight,” Mann told the BBC.

She conceded, however, that overzealous raw-doggers might experience diminishing returns: “This is not ideal for a second-hour flight.”

Virgin Australia announces small dogs and cats to be allowed in cabin on domestic flights

Virgin Australia has announced it plans to become the country's first airline to allow pets to ride onboard.

Small cats and dogs will be allowed on specific domestic flights with the service expected to launch within the next 12 months, subject to regulatory approval.

The proposed changes will allow pets onboard a limited number of designated rows and they will need to remain in a Virgin-approved pet carrier for the whole flight.

Jayne Hrdlicka_Brisbane Airport.jpg

Virgin Australia group chief executive Jayne Hrdlicka said this is a change that travellers want.

"Our love for animals has always been in the Virgin Australia DNA and we are excited at the prospect of taking off with Australia's first-ever pets in cabin flights," Ms Hrdlicka said.

"Overwhelmingly, our guests tell us they want to travel with their pets, and we are now on a journey to make that a reality."

She said it's something that commonly happens overseas and is proven to work well.

"This is only a domestic opportunity for dogs and cats to travel onboard, it's a little complicated to do that internationally."

Ms Hrdlicka said the airline was working with the service regulator to figure out what the service might cost travellers.

Pet carriers must fit under the seat in front in designated rows under the plan.

She said the designated rows will also allow passengers who do not want to be near animals to book a seat away from them.

Australians want pets in cabins, survey results show

Virgin Australia surveyed its Facebook followers in 2021 and saw 85 per cent of respondents voting in favour of the airline launching pets in cabin flights.

"Almost 70 per cent of Australian households have a pet, so this announcement is really significant for a large proportion of the country," Ms Hrdlicka said.

Ms Hrdlicka said the service is only for dogs and cats: "no snakes, no birds, no hamsters, no rabbits, unfortunately those guys have to stay home."

Melbourne Airport chief executive Lorie Argus said the airport has been working with the airline to help a seamless transition.

"Animals being carried onboard Virgin Australia flights will be required to remain in their approved pet carriers at all other times within the terminal," Ms Argus said.

"We expect the pets in cabin concept will prove a popular offering and we look forward to working with Virgin Australia to make it a reality."

Two air hostess lie next to a dog wearing a pilot costume.

Ms Hrdlicka said there will be spots for dogs to go to the toilet at airports, but pets won't be out and about in the terminal.

"Dogs and cats must stay in the carrier from the moment they get to the airport until they get to the other side."

She said it would be up to owners to manage their animals, just like parents manage their small children on flights.

Pets are currently required to be checked into cargo unless they are authorised service dogs.

Shiels: For a traveler, 'home' is hotels, shuttle busses and airplanes

Delta Captain Mark Eppler with grateful passenger Michael Patrick Shiels on a flight to Miami.

My cross-country flight from Miami was comfortable but not memorable, which is the best you can hope for in air travel. Disembarking was remarkable, though, because two Delta representatives wearing neckties came aboard to announce our pilot had won a “Chairman’s Club Award” from the airline. This gave the passengers an opportunity to congratulate captain Mark Eppler as they passed the very tall, humble fellow standing at the cockpit door as they exited the aircraft. I was pleased to tip my cap to the captain.

“We do not get much chance to speak with the pilots, but I want you to know how much I appreciate your capability and courage,” I told Eppler. “I never take for granted the ability to be flown anywhere I want, any time, safely. It is a modern miracle. And you sound so calm and matter of fact when you make your in-flight announcements!”

Eppler’s smile was gracious.

“That is due to 35 years of flying Delta jets and five years in the military before that,” Eppler said with a shrug. He admitted that in most industries customers are more likely to complain than to compliment. “But I try to verbalize and show appreciation to people in restaurants or hotels or shops anywhere I travel. And to our passengers.”

Eppler’s co-pilot, standing next to him, was listening closely. He had two years under his belt flying with Delta.

“It is like you are learning alongside ‘Captain Sullenberger,’” I suggested.

New dogs can learn old tricks, as I experienced on a Delta flight a week later when the liftoff for our one-hour, early Saturday morning flight to Las Vegas was delayed five hours. The younger captain, once everyone was seated, came out of the cockpit to take the microphone, and explain the maintenance situation.

“I’d like to tell you once we land, we are rewarding your patience by sending you to a complimentary gourmet lunch at Bouchon, but we did give you a $12 airport food credit, which, by the way, is two-dollars more than Delta provides us,” the captain claimed. “I also figure the least we can do is open the bar with complimentary drinks during the flight.”

I encountered other tourism industry professionals who, like Eppler, were intent on spreading joy earlier that day at the Hilton Miami Airport Blue Lagoon Hotel, which is better described as a plane-side, waterfront resort.

“I’m still throwing some sunshine your way,” said front desk clerk Trassa, flicking her hand as if she were shooting sparkles. Trassa’s nickname is, therefore, “Sunshine,” and despite the fact she was finishing her overnight shift in the pre-dawn hours, she was ebullient when she stated, “I am just so happy working here.”

I am always happy to overnight at the Hilton Miami Airport Blue Lagoon which, for me, has crossed over from being a hotel to becoming a “home-tell.” While the idea of an airport hotel might sound like a transitory proposition, the Hilton Blue Lagoon has become a base camp for my adventures - whether they be in South America or South Beach. The Hilton provokes a Pavlovian response before the excitement of even seeing soccer star Lionel Messi play an Inter Miami game nearby or a dinner at Joe’s Stone Crab.

“Welcome back, amigo,” said Josue, the friendly Cuban fellow who drives one of the Hilton’s two, constantly looping, complimentary airport shuttles. Josue also assured me he would save a seat on the shuttle leaving at the proper time in case I happened to linger at the Hilton’s lagoon-front pool and tiki bar a little longer.

He tolerated my attempts to speak Spanish, and told me, in English, of his former life in Cuba as he drove me to the airport for my flight to Havana…and back when I returned. The Hilton’s General Manager, Jean Armas, welcomed me back from Cuba and to the hotel. He’d arranged for a plate of traditional empanadas and some locally-brewed “Havana Lager” to be waiting in my 14 th -story room, with a view of the airport, downtown Miami, and the Blue Lagoon pool deck, to make me feel “at home.”

For a traveler, “home” is hotels, shuttle busses and airplanes.
