  • Bogdans K 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing for getting to know different cultures and having a contrast between different “worlds” Our guide Jan (one of Sami) was organised, good-humoured and his eyes were on fire when he was telling us unbelievable stories and history about Sami and his childhood. In addition, he provided us with experience to listen to his Yoik which is quite private thing for Sami. Still having goosebumps from that one. Highly recommend. Jan’s positive attitude charges you up for the rest of the day Read more Written 12 April 2024
  • Paul R 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A great experience with the reindeer. As much as the sled ride was cancelled we still thoroughly enjoyed feeding the reindeer. The highlight was, however, the young Sami gentleman who explained the story of the Sami’s, their history and culture. All the staff were very friendly, which really helped make it a great experience. Read more Written 10 April 2024
  • U2931IDlukem 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Highly recommended and interesting day out I booked this more because others in our party were really keen to do it. I was expecting it to be a bit of a tourist trap, quite frankly. But it turned out to be one of the best excursions we did. The bus trip up from Tromsø to Ramfjordbotn (home of one of the local Sami tribes) took around 45 minutes and passed through some beautiful scenery. We were lucky to have perfect weather and the camp was well organised. The sleigh ride itself was short but sweet, but feeding the reindeer turned out to be a surprising delight, and a highlight of the visit. Even the intro to Sami history and culture was very interesting and entertaining, in no small part due to the charisma and humour of our Sami guide. Definitely recommended. • Orator11 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Missed The Reindeer Sledding We wanted to see and feed some reindeers so signed up for a package here. The reindeers here were friendly and you could feed them by hand, unlike in Finland, where the animals were more standoffish and slightly more aggressive. Here, a few of the animals seemed enthusiastic and butted the others out of the way or tried to climb our backs to access the pails of feed. After a quick lunch of reindeer stew and bread, we were then given a quick background of the Sami tribes and traditions, as well as a look at their accessories like coats and shoes, made from reindeer hides. Unfortunately, the reindeer sleigh rides were cancelled as the ground was apparently too slushy. They promised a refund of 370 krone each. Read more Written 22 March 2024

We were able to learn so much about reindeers and the Sami people. The guide also sang two traditional Sami songs for us . I really loved this experience and would recommend it to anyone. • jill7054 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Lovely scenery and reindeer experience, but not as "traditional" as we expected We booked the Reindeer Sledding/Feeding/Sami Culture tour, but unfortunately the sledding part of the trip was cancelled due to the weather conditions. A bit disappointed of course, but it would only have been a 15-minute ride & we understand that the safety of the animals must always be a priority. Anyway, the tour guide said we would receive a partial refund & this was processed on our credit card account within 48 hours. The drive (large coach, big group) through the beautiful landscape was wonderful, we saw some fabulous scenery. When we arrived at the reindeer farm, we were surprised (and slightly disappointed) to discover that the "traditional lavvu Sami tent" which we expected to experience during the lunch & Sami Culture part of the trip was actually a rather new looking, purpose-built large circular wooden structure. We suppose the traditional tents are not big enough to accommodate such big groups, but this was not mentioned in the advertising by Tromso Lapland. Feeding the reindeer was fun; we had plenty of time to be with them and take some great photos. We then had hot chocolate, tea or coffee in the "tent" followed by a hot lunch of either reindeer or vegetable stew. After feeding & admiring the reindeer, the idea of a reindeer meat lunch was (literally) "a bit hard to swallow" & the majority of people opted for the vegetarian stew (us included). The young man who gave a presentation about Sami culture was very entertaining and funny. We expected to hear some traditional Sami music and singing, but this didn't happen, perhaps other tour companies offer a more "traditional" experience. Read more Written 29 February 2024

  • SunCitySteve 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Good, informative tour We enjoyed feeding the reindeer and the sled ride was fun, if a bit cold. The hosts were informative about the Sami culture and the provided lunch was okay. The hourlong bus ride out and back is tedious but the "ranch" is far out of town so we expected it. • ParisLondonDubai 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A beautiful day with reindeer. This was really wonderful. You take a big bus on a stunning 45 minute drive out to the reindeer camp. Then after a quick orientation in a roundhouse, we did a reindeer sled ride (about 35 minutes) followed by going into the reindeer meadow and feeding the tamed reindeer. After that you go back to the roundhouse to warm up and eat some soup (reindeer stew or vegetarian) and drink hot drinks. After lunch the host gives you background on the Sami ethnic group (historically semi-nomadic reindeer herders across Norway, Finland, Russia, and Sweden). Then you take the bus back to Tromso (again the views!!). All in all, a GREAT day if you have good weather - which we did. Read more Written 5 February 2024
  • U7520RJcraigw 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Very Dissappointing tourist trap The veiws like every where in this part of Norway were amazing. Howevever the tour was very sub standard. The reindeer sleding was llike a kids pony ride ,a group of 6 to 8 sleds attached together with the lead reideer being led by the guide walking beside it holding the bridal around an oval open paddock lasting about 15mins 20 tops. Much of the time lagre groups were left to their own devices wondering what they were suppose to do next with not a lot of guidance. The staff seemed unenthusiastic and disinterested in the punters definitely not engageing.at all. The meal when compared to that on other tours was well below standard which consisted of what appeared to be diluted gravey with carrots meat (reindeer?) and potatoes. The talk on sami culture was quiet informative and entertaining. The tipping point was the pit toilets which were filled almost to the brim, dirty with faeces on the floor and seats in a number of the 6 cubicles (Absolutley disgusting) There were also no facilties to wash hands at all, merely a bottle of sanitizer. We stayed overnight in the tents, the bedding a type of button up sleeping bag that had multiple buttons missing it looked like it doesnt get washed between occupants? The tent was warm as long as you kept stoking the fire every 1 to 2 hrs. Breakfast was laid out when we arrived a 8.00am for 8.15 start hot componet bacon and fried eggs was already stone cold with no way of reheating it. I would say at $1200 au dollar for 2 people it was a churn and burn tourist trap one to definitly be avoided an opinion shared by the other guests that stayed overnight. Minor changes could have improved the experience dramaticlly but it seemed there was just an overall lack of effort. Dont be cecived by the pretty pics. Read more Written 22 January 2024
  • leahjwright 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Tromsø Lapland overnight stay Such a beautiful place and the people are extremely welcoming. We were lucky enough to see the aurora from the moment we stepped off the bus and enjoyed them throughout sleigh ride across the tundra. A lovely evening meal with a vegan options for me provided too. We stayed in a lavvu overnight and were very warm with plenty of wood for the fire. You do have to add logs every hour so don’t expect a full night of unbroken sleep - so worth it for the experience though. The view in the morning was incredible with the mountains in the background. We particularly enjoyed learning all about the Sami traditions. Thank you for a lovely experience - would definitely recommend. Read more Written 3 January 2024

  • JessicaaCoelho 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Professional boundary was crossed I wanted to do something for my birthday and I started looking for experiences with reindeer and Sami culture. In this process I found Tromsø Lapland with the option to spend the night at Lavvo. Aleksandar was very nice throughout the contact, considering that on the 19th there were no spaces available and on the 18th they had had a problem with the system and I was unable to book through any website. So, he manually put me on the reservation and I paid at the bus met. The first part of the program, which was reindeer sledding, reindeer feeding and dinner, was held with the entire group, then only the people who would spend the night remained. Regarding this first part, I found the contact with the reindeer, the dinner and the contact with the Sami culture interesting. Food was really good and be so close to the reindeers was really nice. I don't think it's worth the sledding if you do it at night, it must be very beautiful to do it during the day because they are located in a beautiful valley. I also wondered the whole time whether this was good for the reindeer or not. They explained to me that it is a good training for them as they will start to migrate to the summer camps later. Obviously it's a very touristy thing, but at that moment I didn't know any other way of getting in touch with them. After everyone left, I was the only guest for the night. But at that point things started to get a little strange. They knew it was my birthday and of course, they congratulated me and were kind. But the guide Nils (I don't know if this is the right way to write it) started hugging me too much and touching his face to mine. I had the felling I smelled alcohol in him, but I can't confirm it. Then he took me to the Lavvo and explained how to heat the room with firewood and the precautions I had to take. He even told me that if I needed anything, they lived there and I had two beds in my lavvo (what he meant by that, I don't know). When I went to the bathroom I met other people and they started asking me questions about how old I was, whether I was single or married. Okay, “normal” questions. I went back to my lavvo, watched the northern lights, the stars, then decided to get ready for bed. Almost midnight I hear a voice screaming and calling my name. It was Nils. He said in 10 minutes it was my birthday and they wanted to give me a gift. It looked weird, but I accepted because I didn't want to be disrespectful to their culture. Nils picked me up on his snowmobile and I thought he was going for a ride or something. He stopped at another smaller hut, took a box and took me to the main hut where they welcomed tourists for their main meals. At that moment he started singing happy birthday in his language, handed me a box with some Sami crafts and said that I was supposed to choose a gift and then two more men entered the hut and I was there alone with the three of them. They offered me cider, showed me a plant, saying that it is common to make tea from this plant to drink, that I didn't have to worry because it is not hallucinogenic and the other two men who were together start drinking too. I was very uncomfortable this whole time. Nils and Per were sitting at the same table as me. There was another boy, wearing the team's uniform, sitting at a table further ahead. I could see that he was super uncomfortable with the situation too. I accepted the cider and drank it with great caution, but I didn't accept the tea from the plant as I said I wouldn't feel comfortable drinking something that I didn't know what effects it could have on my body. They offered me a barbecue, but I also said I was satisfied with dinner. At that moment Nils left and never came back. I stayed with Per, who I discovered is the owner of the farm, and with this other team member. At one point Per left and this guy apologized to me for the whole situation. I explained how scared I was. Soon after, Per came in asking what we were talking about and I told him what I was feeling. They apologized to me many times and said they had no intention of doing anything. They only called me because it was my birthday, I was alone and they thought I might want to celebrate. But at no point, when they called me saying they would give me a gift, did they ask me if I wanted to celebrate this way and with them. I found what they did completely unprofessional. I felt vulnerable, intimidated and very uncomfortable. I was the only guest, a woman, alone, and they called me for a “gift”, put me inside a hut with 3 men, offered me alcohol and started drinking too, and offered me tea from a plant that I don't know what effect it can have on me. I was being cautious and careful the whole time because I didn't want to disrespect anyone's culture and customs, but I think a very big professional boundary was crossed in this experience. When I felt safe leaving, I went to the bathroom and went back to the lavvo. But it took me a long time to sleep, scared and afraid. Apart from that, the entire team that attended to me while I was there: Lucca, Catarina, the two girls from the Czech Republic and the Polish man (I'm sorry I don't remember their names) who was driving the van to leave were very respectful and attentive. The experience of sleeping in the lavvo is really cool. I was “lucky” to sleep alone, I don’t know how many people maximum can sleep there, but I would say that more than 2 could be uncomfortable. It's cool to control the heat with fire, sleep in reindeer skin and wake up in such a beautiful valley. The breakfast is very tasty, I just thought the price was too high to have to leave at 9 am. I think it would be more worth it if I could stay until around 11am enjoying that beautiful nature for a bit. Ps.: I thought a lot before writing this report because I know that in these situations our word is always doubted, but I'm tired of going through uncomfortable situations and being silenced. I also thought about sending a complaint directly to the owner of the space, but as he was present, it wouldn't worth it or change anything. Read more Written 26 November 2023

  • taniarA6414FI 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The Magical Fjord Tour of 10.03.2024 We booked our Fjord Tour from Best Arctic directly from their website a month before our visit to Tromso. Best Arctic as the name suggest was really best tour operator in Tromso. As per guideline people gathered 20 mins earlier in the lobby Raddison Blue. Best Arctic has a cute office there. We were given Pink bands to wear as many day trippers of various activites were also present. We waited when our tour guide Juan came up and took all the tourists for boarding the Red Bus. Next started our journey through Tromso. Juan is a nice chap and is very kind and knowledagble about the nature around him. Our driver was a local named Katharina who was really nice and warm person. Juan guided 14 of us always answering our queries, taking our pictures and also sharing little trivias of the fjords we visited in Kvaloya and Sommaroy. We were provided with proper bathroom break and were taken to a fisherman's cabin up in Sommaroy where we had our lunch. The landscape outside the cabin was just breathtaking. Thank you to Juan and Katharina for the hospitality and also to local person ( whose name I have forgotton sry) of Sommaroy whose cabin we used. People do come for NL in Tromso but people should also take this tour to see how beautiful Northern Norway's landscape is. Read more Written 30 March 2024

We had a lovely soup (vegetarian for me and I was told the fish soup was also good) and a hot drink and then we went out on the sleds. At first I was a little worried as there seemed to be a lot to take into consideration when in control but it was really easy actually and so much fun! Also incredibly beautiful I got some stunning photos. The staff were all really nice and friendly as well. Was a really special experience, fully recommend it! Read more Written 25 March 2024
  • Tracy F 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles A few more disappointments than positives DOG SLED EXCURSION: PROS: The man who dealt with us on the help desk when it was cancelled really did do everything he could to help us and showed genuine empathy. Full refund was given. CONS: No communication prior to cancelling, just waited for us all to turn up to the desk ready and excited (I don't believe it was that last minute a decision). No options at all for alternatives. Other dog sled company didn't cancel and were even more remote location (plus told me this was perfect weather and they never understood why big tour operators cancel). NORTHERN LIGHTS CHASE BY MINI BUS: PROS: When we did finally set up the campfire, the atmosphere was nice and beautiful remote setting. There was initial excitement doing the 'chase' but it did wear off quite quickly especially as I was feeling so ill from the heat on the bus. CONS: Bus ridiculously hot - felt ill. She said this was how they like to keep the bus. With the weather being very bad for most of the evening plus we had been told activity was not likely to improve, a few of us agreed it might be best to call it a night (which the guide agreed with) and we asked for a vote (which didn't happen) but we ended up staying till 12.20 which was described as the magic hour (felt this was more what the guide wanted to do)  Very late before finding somewhere to stay and light a fire and we still hadn't eaten or even had a hot drink which kept being mentioned. One person was complaining about no opportunity for toilet break in 3 hours. We were told we would be having a sandwich or wrap which would have been easy to eat and filling. Instead we were given turmat soup in a packet which we were put off eating after the guide told us how difficult they were to use and eat from. So we had no food all evening in the end. I would have brought snacks if I'd known. It would have been even more difficult to eat as there were no fold away stools or chairs to sit on. So we were basically stood the whole time and a few of us had to keep going and sitting on the bus. It felt like we were just waiting around to be taken home. When the tripod and professional camera was set up by the guide this became her main focus for the rest of the time with little interaction with us or checking how we were doing. Could see a couple of times I needed to get past on/off bus but was made to wait several minutes each time. While I was on the bus resting my legs and trying to warm up a bit the guide took professional photos of only 2 couples (which I didn't know about at the time). We should have all been made aware this was happening and each had a professional photo to download, very disappointing.  A group of the tour were shown a small green area through her zoomed in camera (this was not visible to the naked eye) and I couldn't see being at the back. When the group moved away I asked if I could also have a look only to be told 'I already zoomed in on the photo for them to see'. Basically didn't want to do it again for me, which would have only taken seconds. A shame as my camera even with night mode didn't pick anything up. My 3 stars are for: Full refund for dog sled. How the man at the help desk tried to help. Pros of northern lights chase as mentioned above. Sadly a few more cons than pros and I think I would rethink booking excursions through a big tour operator. My advice is to use smaller family run, more personal services. I can recommend Northern lights dog adventures and I have heard that guide gunnar is very good. I know there are many positive reviews for best arctic so you may not encounter the things that we did and could have a great experience. Read more Written 24 March 2024

  • Nanyhrr 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Not as expected Almost everyone who takes a northern lights tour knows that the chances of seeing them do not depend on the agency but on nature, however motivation is essential in these types of trips. The driver was very friendly, however our guide was very basic, he gave us the minimum instructions at the beginning of the trip, about cell phones and cameras, basic explanation about the tour or the northern lights, minimal information about what we would do. During the trip he spoke the minimum and essential and always mentioning the high probability of not seeing the auroras. Whether or not you see the auroras does not depend on the agency or the guide, but motivation or at least knowing more about the experience would be much better. Read more Written 23 March 2024

I enjoyed the days in Norway. It is a fast paced itinerary but you never get bored at one place. Despite the pace I had quite some hours at each place where we stopped and hiked around. The trip definition matched my expectations. My travel fellows are quite diverse in terms of culture background and age. I think intrepid did a good job to make a satisfying tour for such a diverse group.

The Grand Lapland tour I can recommend for anyone wanting to see Lapland. We stayed in cosy shared cottages in Finish and Swedish Lapland. We made lots of new friends and memories that will last a lifetime. Our tour guide, Elo was fantastic and very knowledgeable. Our bus driver, Saki was very friendly and funny. The Lapland winter scenery is really that of a magical winter wonderland. The excursions were great, we were not bored for one moment.

Jann was a fantastic guide / driver who was kind and considerate and wanted the best experience possible for his guests!! Jann was friendly and educated/answered all questions even with personal stories! We were very lucky and had a great viewing night and Jann had prepared us for the post that we would not see anything, would highly suggest the Jann experience to everyone!

Northern Lights tour with Insight Vacations was very well designed to maximize the experience. The tour leader Zsofi was exceptional and our most capable driver Iceman Tom made it an unforgettable experience. I loved the ease of the pace...no rush mornings as most of the activities were later into the day to ensure you were brighteyed and bushy tailed (awake) for the nighttime spectacle we came for...lady Aurora Borealis. And what a,show the fair lady put on for us...we saw her on nights 2 and 3 of the tour. Our hearts were thrilled. Mission accomplished...bucket list checked. Read more Written March 30, 2024

Read more Written March 25, 2024
Read more Written March 24, 2024

Read more Written March 23, 2024

After breakfast, start your arctic experience with huskies! After the safety instructions and winter clothing being handed out, start your 8km safari and enjoy the silence and beautiful winter scenery of Levi. Everyone will get a chance to mush their own husky team (one driving, one is sitting on a sledge). After the trip warm drinks will be served by the open fire. Today you will drive by snowmobiles to a snow white forest lake full of fish. Try to catch your meal, a rainbow-trout, by ice fishing! In case you are not lucky, the host of the lake has promised to cook delicious soup by the fire of his wooden hut. After the lunch the snowmobile safari continues round the fells to the summit of Levi and back to the centre. Duration 4-5 hours.

Return to your glass igloo.

Day 4 - Travel to Kilpisjärvi and stay at boutique hotel Cahkal

After check-in, enjoy a 3-course lunch and relax with the mountain views from your stylish room.

This evening, enjoy a group dinner at the accommodation restaurant, Aika.

Head back to the hotel for a 3-course lunch and enjoy some free time in the afternoon.

After dinner, head into the surrounding nature for a late evening adventure to seek for the northern lights. At a nice spot we enjoy hot local berry juice and snacks and enjoy the silence around us. If we are lucky the experience will be fullfilled by the dancing northern lights and stars in the sky.

Day 6 - Snowshoe adventure and sauna experience in the evening

After breakfast you will go on a snowshow adventure. It is an easy way to get in to the beautiful surrounding snowy landscape.

With local guides you will get most knowledge about the unique surrounding nature and it’s rich history. During the trip we build a small shelter in the snow together and enjoy delicious light lunch and admire the views.

After dinner, it is time to experience the famous Finnish sauna. The large window of the steam room lets you admire the astonishing Saana mountain. Cool off on the terrace and enjoy the view while listening to the calming sound of the Cahkal River.

Day 7 - Travel to Tromsø - the middle of the Aurora Borealis zone and Northern Lights Dinner Cruise

After breakfast, board your bus to travel to Tromsø, 2.5 hours north across the Norwegian border. Tromsø is the gateway to the Arctic and one of the best and most cosmopolitan places to observe the spectacle that is called the Northern Lights. Tromsø is located in the middle of the Aurora Borealis zone, and following the planet’s rotation, Tromsø moves into the aurora zone from 6pm to midnight.

In the evening, sail in complete silence around the Arctic capital and enjoy the city from the sea. Take in the atmospheric arctic night over a local and seasonal tasting menu. On board the electric catamaran enjoy dinner prepared by a local restaurant with locally-sourced, seasonal and fresh ingredients. The dinner is inspired by traditional Northern Norwegian culinary dishes. Buy your drinks from the bar and enjoy the panoramic view of the well-known sights around Tromsø. You will sail past the famous Arctic cathedral, under the bridges of Tromsø and enjoy the view of the city. Sailing away from the light pollution of the city you might see the Northern Lights from deck, or from the panoramic saloon on the second floor.

Important Information

Please note that the itinerary and price is subject to availability. We do our utmost to create an itinerary as close to this published tour as possible. Activities are subject to change due to updated schedules and weather.

Read about staying overnight at the ICEHOTEL here. This tour price includes a night in an ice room in the original hotel. If you would like to upgrade to an ART SUITE in the original ICEHOTEL or a Deluxe Suite 365 in the new 365 section of the ICEHOTEL, please let us know at the time of booking. The Deluxe Suite 365, exclusively designed and made of snow and ice, holds its own private bathroom in warm room temperature, always including a shower and a toilet.

MEDICAL AND HEALTH INFORMATION:

All travellers need to be in good physical health in order to participate fully on this trip. When selecting your trip please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully and assess your ability to manage and enjoy group travel . During winter, roads and footpaths can be icey so please consider carefully how much luggage you bring as you will be responsible for carrying all the luggage on these outside paths. There is limited portage service in Scandinavia and your tour escorts cannot help you, beyond reason.

Scandinavia is a fairly accessible destination for people with restricted mobility and other disabilities and is actively working to be more accessible every day. However, please note that our group tours are often not suitable for persons with limited accessibility due to inclusions and pace. 50 Degrees North is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability and we can tailor-make independent itineraries for travellers when needed. Please contact us for further details.

SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL:

Our premium mini-coach tours are one way in which we are looking at how we can reduce carbon emissions over all styles of travel that we offer, not just on our group tours which by their nature have shared transport, but also on our private options. This tour is a private tour however the transport 'mini-coach' between destinations is shared (but exclusive to our travellers, max 12 pax), therefore reducing the overall carbon footprint for each traveller.

Your glass igloo hosts in Kittila have been awarded the Green Key award in recognition of their environmental actions. The igloos are run on green electricity, geothermal heating, and air-air heat pumps. To reduce plastic no bottled water is sold or provided, Finnish tap water has been scientifically proven to be among the purest in the world, as such it is served in glass as an alternative. Recycled materials are encouraged, an example of this is staff clothes in the restaurant which are all made of recycled materials.

Light pollution affects the ecosystem and among other things, it disrupts the ability of birds to navigate by moonlight and starlight, and the ability of nocturnal animals to hide from predators. As such they utilize as much natural light as possible, and only keep the lights on when they are needed. Customers are encouraged to do the same – this way marvelling the northern sky becomes easier.

The original and famous ICEHOTEL was one of the first accommodations in Kiruna to become ‘Sustainable Arctic Destination’ certified and the hotel’s connection with the environmental cycle is core to everything it does. The hotel is located on the Torne River and ice is harvested every winter to make the hotel, and in the summer, when the hotel is melting, the water returns to its origin. As such waste and emissions are kept to an absolute minimum.

Please note this tour is not suitable for children under the age of 14.

Best places to see the Northern Lights around the world – and when to visit

O ne of the world’s most famous natural sights, the Northern Lights attract people to areas around the Arctic in hopes of seeing the rare display.

Caused by the redirection of particles from the sun that hit the Earth’s atmosphere, the stunning atmospheric phenomenon is seen as the Holy Grail of skywatching and mostly occurs in areas around Norway , Finland , Sweden and Greenland.

The lights can be seen in other parts of the world; the UK has even had sightings in Scotland, Merseyside and Wales this winter during a period of heightened geomagnetic activity.

Unfortunately, such sightings are rare and most people wanting to see the aurora borealis (the scientific name for the phenomenon, coined by Galileo Galilei) will have to travel further north.

To help you in your quest to see the spectacular light show, we’ve put together a list of the best places for seeing the Northern Lights and when to go to maximise your chances.

Tromso, Norway

Tromso sits at the centre of the Northern Lights’ oval, meaning that the lights can be visible even when activity is low. According to the tourism website, Tromso is “one of the places in the world with the highest probability of seeing the lights”, and there is “always a good chance of seeing” them between September and April.

Temperatures are moderated by the Norwegian Sea and westerly winds, meaning that they are much milder than usual for the latitude, with averages of between 2C and -1C during peak viewing times (compared to Svalbard, where the average January high is -13C).

When to visit Tromso

Your best chance of seeing the lights in Tromso is between September and April, when the skies are dark enough for them to be visible.

Svalbard, Norway

This Norwegian archipelago is home to more polar bears than people and experiences harsh winters, with the sun not properly rising over the horizon between mid-November and mid-January.

While the islands do not experience total darkness (and therefore you aren’t guaranteed to see the lights), the main island, Spitsbergen, hosts several different types of expedition to give you the best chance of catching the phenomenon. If you’re lucky, you may even see some polar wildlife such as reindeer, Arctic foxes and walruses too.

When to visit Svalbard

The lights season here is slightly shorter than in Tromso, running from September until the middle of March. The best time of day to try and see the lights is between 6pm and midnight.

Rovaniemi, Finland

Located in Finnish Lapland, Rovaniemi markets itself as the ‘Official Home of Santa Claus’ and contains a Santa Claus Village and Santa Park. The Northern Lights are visible here on “around 150 nights a year” from August, and the tourism websites provides ideas for nearby locations to view them.

Among its suggestions are the Arctic Garden (a 10-minute walk away) and the top of Ounasvaara fell (a longer, 45-minute walk from the town). Among other snow-based activities – such as sledding – you can join snowmobile trips and ice floating tours as special ways to enjoy the lights.

When to visit Rovaniemi

Rovaniemi is one destination where the lights season is exceptionally long, running from late August to early April. However, the best time to visit is during the Polar Night period, from mid-November to mid-January.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Iceland is located roughly 65 degrees north, making the country an excellent option for those trying to see the Northern Lights. They can be viewed in several locations, such as Thingvellir National Park or Kirkjufell Mountain, but the best place to stay when visiting has to be Reykjavik . The Icelandic capital is a typical Nordic city in style and acts as an excellent base for seeing the natural sights of the country in the day before going on a guided trip to see the lights by night.

When to visit Reykjavik

Iceland has a fairly typical length to its lights season, running from September to April.

Abisko, Sweden

Situated in Swedish Lapland, right at the heart of the aurora oval, Abisko National Park receives no light pollution and has one of the lowest rainfall climates in the Nordic area. With many surrounding mountains to keep the skies clear, Abisko also offers the chance to try out several activities such as snowmobiling, fishing and hiking.

The Aurora Sky Station markets itself as “the best place on Earth to experience Northern Lights”, but it seems that this confidence isn’t unfounded: if you were to stay for three nights in Abisko, you’d have an 88 per cent chance of seeing the lights, while the government website also claims that the area sometimes receives “more than two weeks of consecutive northern lights nights”.

When to visit Abisko

Maximise your chances of catching the lights by visiting between mid-September and early March.

Yukon, Canada

With a land area of 483,450sqkm, the Yukon is a vast region which is almost as large as the entirety of Spain. Roughly 80 per cent of the territory is wilderness; it’s home to the longest river in Canada , the second tallest peak in North America (Mount Logan, at 5,959m high), the smallest desert in the world (Carcross, at 1.6sqkm) and dozens of animal species, from moose to brown bears.

With this in mind, while exploring on your own may be tempting, when it comes to viewing the lights you’re best off booking a tour. It’s a good idea to base yourself in Whitehorse (the capital, with a population of just over 28,000), where guided tours will take you to nearby spots to give you the best chance of seeing the light show.

When to visit Yukon

Another place with a lights season lasting nearly eight months, Yukon’s most active time for light displays is between October and mid-November.

Ilulissat, Greenland

The most sparsely populated country in the world, Greenland offers the chance to see the lights with uninterrupted calm and tranquility. With a population of just under 5,000 people, Ilulissat is “rich in Inuit history” and is home to “millions of icebergs”. Low levels of light pollution and many clear nights will offer a good chance of seeing the lights during your stay.

With a population of just over 500, locations such as Kangerlussuaq also offer good opportunities to see the lights but may be too remote for some.

With three new airports coming to the island , access will soon be easier than ever.

When to visit Ilulissat

Along with the rest of Greenland, Ilulissat has a fairly typical season, lasting from September to March.

Outer Hebrides, Scotland

Home to “some of the darkest skies in the UK”, some of the islands in the Outer Hebrides sit on the same latitude as parts of Norway and Alaska . The aurora has been seen as far south as Edinburgh , but the islands of Lewis, Harris, Uist and Barra are your best chance for seeing the lights in the UK .

More accessible than most of the other locations on this list, the islands are also generally an excellent spot for seeing different astronomical sights, such as the Orion Nebula, the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy.

When to visit the Outer Hebrides

Lights season in these islands runs from September to April, although the best time to see the lights is during the Equinox and Solstice, so between March and April and September and October respectively.

Fairbanks, Alaska, USA

The second largest city (by population) in Alaska, Fairbanks is situated near the centre of the state and is home to just over 32,000 people. Located on a similar latitude to Iceland, conditions here are perfect for viewing the lights: dark skies, dry conditions and a lack of light pollution.

One of the main benefits of Fairbanks (versus some other locations on the list) is the fact that you don’t even have to leave the city to see the lights, and as a major settlement, all the necessary amenities are available alongside the many tours on offer.

When to visit Fairbanks

The season here lasts slightly longer than usual, stretching from late August to April.

Finnish Lapland

While Rovaniemi has already been mentioned on this list, there are so many worthy destinations in Finnish Lapland that the entire area has to be recommended. Levi is the largest ski resort in Finland but is less crowded than other European resorts, and offers the chance to see the lights on snowmobiles or on reindeer-drawn sleighs. Harriniva is another resort that offers similar activities, with the Muonio River adding another scenic touch. Saariselka offers a different, village setting with excellent spots for viewing the lights only half a kilometre away.

When to visit Finnish Lapland

The official Finnish tourism website states that the best times to see the lights are in autumn and spring, at the beginning and the end of the season, with the season itself running from mid-August until early April.
