Most wineries invite visitors for wine tastings and tours. Some even serve delicious food to complement their wine. As you tour, you may view the entire process, from crushing to bottling, each winery uniquely different. Where better to sample and select your favourite wine than the winery itself. Be sure to take a bottle of the region’s finest when you leave.

Throughout the world, wine producing countries have set standards by which to judge their products and recognize the best. The VQA put British Columbian wines to the test of meeting premium-quality standards. This seal is awarded to British Columbia’s superior wines, and is an assurance to the consumer of a certain standard in wine excellence.

The Saanich Peninsula lies just a few minutes north of Victoria. Considered Vancouver Island’s latest viticultural hot spot, the Saanich Peninsula boasts the Island’s only certified-organic vineyard. Your next wine tour starts in the Cowichan Valley which is reached via the Trans Canada Highway or if the prospect of negotiating the steep Malahat Drive is daunting, B.C. Ferries operates a regularly scheduled service from Brentwood Bay to Mill Bay.

Your Cowichan Valley wine tour is your opportunity to sample something truly special! The Vancouver Island wine route begins at Mill Bay , at the Merridale Ciderworks, and then heads north to Cowichan Bay / Cobble Hill and the Cherry Point Vineyards. Cherry Point offers guided tours three times a day that provide an in-depth look at grape growing and wine making at a “farm” winery. Next stop is Venturi-Schulze Vineyards and the nearby Blue Grouse Vineyards. Follow the Wine Route markers, it is a fifteen-minute drive north to the southern end of the city of Duncan and Echo Valley Vineyards, Godfrey Brownell Vineyards and Zanatta Winery. Just north of the city is Alderlea Vineyards.

A half-hour drive north to Nanaimo is the Chateau Wolff Vineyard, and farther north in Port Alberni is the Chase Warren Estate Winery, the first winery in Port Alberni and the northernmost tip of the Island’s wine growing region. While the vineyards, wineries, breweries, and distilleries in the Central and North Central Island regions are less concentrated than in other areas of the islands, the passion is just as strong and you’ll find many of the shops and restaurants proudly offering fine locally crafted vintages, brews, and distilled spirits.

No two vineyards are alike; each has its own special favourites, as popular as Chardonnay or as rare as Agria. The region also boasts near-perfect conditions for growing premium quality cider apples. The Cowichan Valley mirrors the climate and soil conditions of the famous cider-growing regions of England and France.

The BC Gulf Islands

Located in the lee of Vancouver Island, between the island and the mainland of British Columbia, are the Gulf Islands, and their near Mediterranean climate. The Gulf Islands are currently home to 12 vineyards, many Gulf Island wineries supplement their production with grapes grown in the Okanagan Valley. Each of the Gulf Islands seems to be a world unto itself; travelling between the Southern Gulf Islands and Northern Gulf Islands can be accomplished in small hops – each island deserves at least a day or two for exploring.

On Saturna Island are the Saturna Island Vineyards, the only island vineyard and winery in Canada with a resort and restaurant facilities. On Saltspring Island , be sure to visit Salt Spring Vinyeards and Garry Oaks Winery, located between Ganges and Fulford Harbour. To the northwest of Saturna Island is Thetis Island , location of Thetis Island Vineyards. Visit Morning Bay Vineyards on North Pender Island, Gabriola Island Winery and Hornby Island on the east coast of Vancouver Island is home to three wineries. Gulf Islands ferries have a few sailings each day, so plan ahead. Diehard wine trekkers will want to hit all the wineries scattered about the islands; your best bet is to bring a bike and a tent for some serious Island Hopping .

Wine Tours Victoria

There are 20 plus wineries on Vancouver  Island with the majority of these wineries located in the Cowichan Valley.  From Victoria (eg. Empress Hotel) to the closest winery (Mill Bay) the travelling time is a 45 minute drive from downtown Victoria.

Enjoy a full day on a Victoria Wine Tour.

Wine Tours Victoria offer a 15 passenger, forward facing, luxury bus that allows for 14 passengers and a driver and a 19 passenger bus that allows for 18 passengers and a driver (important to have a driver).  We pick up in Victoria (or area) and return you to your pick up location. All tours are private group tours (your group only).     See pricing below.

MyGo Tours has extensive knowldege of the wineries in the Cowichan Valley. We know that some of you enjoy the quaint boutique tour style and others would enjoy visiting some of the more more elaborate style of winery. Maybe you would like to see both?  Our tour guides live in the Cowichan Valley. Reservations for the wineries and restaurant arranged by MyGo Tours.  We’re happy to show off our Cowichan Valley!

Typically we visit 3-4 wineries and  lunch restaurant.  Tastings and lunch are not included in this pricing.  It;s pay as you go and you can expect a winery charge of about $13 for a five wine tasting including gratuity and tax.

We tour groups.  But, only your group. We do not mix groups. The price is always the same no matter how many of your people you have on the bus.

The best days for wine tasting tours are Thursday, Friday, Saturday. We do not tour Sundays from Victoria due to return highway traffic volume. Monday and Tuesday some wineries are closed.  Saturdays are the busiest tour day.

Southern Vancouver Island boasts two award-winning regions that welcome wine tasting tours , all within an easy day trip from town.

The history of wine on the island is a tale that intertwines the art of winemaking with the natural beauty of the region, offering a journey through time that culminates in the flourishing wine culture we see today.

The history of winemaking on Southern Vancouver Island dates back to the mid-19th century when European settlers recognized the region's potential for viticulture. Early attempts were made to cultivate grapes for wine, but it wasn't until the 20th century that the industry began to take root. Winemakers faced challenges, such as unpredictable weather and untested grape varieties, but the passion for creating exceptional wines prevailed.

Many people assume that commercial wine making in British Columbia started in the Okanagan when in fact it was right here in sunny Saanich back in 1921 with the Growers Wine Company.  The first wineries in the region set the stage for what would become a thriving industry.

Over the years, other notable wineries emerged, each contributing to the unique character of the region's wines. Venturing into the Cowichan Valley, Vancouver Island's wine country, wineries like Blue Grouse Estate Winery and Averill Creek Vineyard began making their mark with award-winning vintages. The valley's combination of cool ocean breezes and sun-kissed vineyards proved ideal for producing crisp whites and elegant reds.

As the wine industry on Southern Vancouver Island matured, so did the culture of wine tasting and wine tasting tours . Victoria became a hub for wine enthusiasts, offering a gateway to the diverse flavours awaiting discovery in the surrounding regions. Visitors now have the opportunity to explore a plethora of tasting rooms, each providing a unique ambiance and showcasing the craftsmanship of local winemakers.

The Cowichan Valley, often referred to as the "Napa of the North," has become synonymous with exceptional wine experiences. Visitors can embark on self-guided wine tours or join organized wine tasting tours , where they sample a variety of wines while learning about the winemaking process and the history of the region.

There are also numerous wine tasting tours just north of Victoria on the Saanich Peninsula.

Festivals and Events

Southern Vancouver Island hosts an array of wine-related festivals and events that celebrate the local wine culture.

The annual  Cowichan Valley Wine Festival and V ictoria International Wine Festival , attracts wine enthusiasts from near and far. The festivals offer educational opportunities, seminars, live entertainment, wine dinners and of course a chance to savour the best wines from the region.

Our region is a natural destination for wine tasting tours . Choose a self-guided tour (with a designated driver) or sit back, relax and let a local guide chauffeur you to the region’s finest vineyards. Use a trusted company like Viator to book your wine tasting tours . 

For a typical private wine tasting tour, the guide will pick you up at a mutually agreed upon location such as your hotel or the Port of Victoria if you have arrived by cruise ship.

Depending on the length of tour you selected, you may have time for a quick tour of Victoria’s Inner Harbour area, the historic Chinatown district or the quaint neighbourhood of James Bay. James Bay boasts some of the oldest homes in the region with well-preserved examples of Victorian architecture as well as the birthplace of Group of Seven artist, Emily Carr, among other highlights.

Both wine tasting tour options are exceptional choices with beautiful vineyards and award-winning wines. The Cowichan tour comes highly recommended though as it is home to some of the oldest and largest vineyards.

With the Cowichan tour you can expect to be quickly whisked out of the city and within minutes find yourself amidst an old-growth temperate rain forest on Malahat Drive. Enjoy a picturesque 20 minutes as you traverse the Malahat (sometimes just called the “hat”) and near the top, your driver will stop for photos at a scenic lookout spot overlooking Saanich Inlet. On a clear day you can see Mount Baker in Washington State in the distance.

This lookout is one of my favourite spots to take visitors to the Island. 

You will typically make about 3 or 4 stops on this tour with an average of 4 tastings at each. You may also mix it up a bit and delight your palate with a cidery stop. The stops on your tour may be dependent on the time of year, time of day and day of the week that you are booked on. Check the itinerary options when you book.

Lunch at the Unsworth Vineyard Restaurant or The Eatery at Merridale Cidery & Distillery comes highly recommended. 

Saanich Peninsula Wine Tasting Tours

The second wine tasting tour option that is a little closer to downtown Victoria is the wineries, cideries and distilleries of the Saanich Peninsula.

A typical tour might include stops at Sea Cider for excellent ciders and views, then on to the highly awarded Church and State Winery . Once at Church and State you will be encouraged to dine at the Bistro in addition to savouring your tastings.

A final stop on this tour could be De Vine where you can choose between wines or spirits. This is a popular tour booked through Viator.

Remember with a private guide, wine tasting tours can be customized to meet the specific interests of your party. Local tour guides know all the back-roads, where the construction is and where the best views are. They are able to whisk you around the region, ensuring a memorable excursion with the perfect blend of narrated tour, scenic views, distinct, award-winning vineyards and of course, photo ops!

Discover some of the Island’s best, sampling traditional hard ciders and wines at estates nestled alongside our local country roads. The warm hospitality of the local vintners reflects the easy going island lifestyle – where they are happy to share their passion, knowledge and expertise with visitors.

Sharing similar growing conditions as the northern regions of Germany & France our warm summers, temperate mild winters and gravelly soils suit some recognizable grape varietals like Pinot Gris, Pint Noir and more unique varietals Ortega, Marechal Foch as well as some fabulous blackberry dessert wines . Traditional apple ciders vary from a dry cider to dessert style ciders.

Afternoon tours are offered Wednesday to Sunday in season including three leisurely visits at neighbouring wineries & a traditional Cidery. The option of full day tours is available on weekends during the regular season. Full day tours include visits to three wineries and a traditional hard apple cidery with time to stop for lunch along the way. Enjoy lunch overlooking the vineyards with offerings of locally produced seasonally inspired cuisine.

Tours include pick up and drop off at central downtown locations, tasting charges at all locations and a vineyard tour. We have not included lunch in the tour price leaving your lunch selection up to each individual.

Full day departing mid morning and afternoon tours departing 1:00 pm are available.

Winemaking began on Vancouver Island as early as the 1920s, with fruit wine made from local berries—a traditional that endures today, with not only fruit wine but honey wine (mead) and still and sparkling wine from grapes made here. It was a provincial government research project in the 1980s, tasked with identifying grape varietals that could thrive in the maritime climate (such as many hardy hybrid grapes), that really fuelled the modern wine industry. Today the Island boasts around 30 wineries, from the Comox Valley on the northeast coast down to Sooke, near the southern tip.
