The first tour takes you throughout the mansion, describing its history and current features. Renowned architect Richard Morris Hunt designed the 250-room French Renaissance château for George and Edith Vanderbilt. After six years of construction, the home was completed in 1895. It comprises 35 bedrooms, 34 bathrooms, and a stunning 65 fireplaces. The virtual tour even gives you a peek into the basement, which has a bowling alley and a full-sized swimming pool.

On the second tour , you'll visit the estate's grand grounds and gardens, which were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who's best know for designing Central Park. Olmsted wanted to create formal gardens, naturalized areas, an arboretum and nursery, and a managed forest.

At each spot we got to try three different samples and there was a great variety from IPAs to stouts and even a sour.

You’ll get to ride in the back of a converted jeep with clear screens which provide an unobstructed view of the surrounding forest.

The purple buses of LaZoom Comedy Tours represent one of the best tours in Asheville and are a city landmark. The first thing I saw when I first visited Asheville from Argentina, looking for a new cool place to live in the United States, was a guy dressed as a nun, riding a bike, and angrily screaming at a purple bus. I instantly knew this was the place for our family to move next. My kids had to grow up near Sister Bad Habit!

These “historical and hysterical” multi-award-winning tours mix comedy, history, and partying on purple buses guided by eccentric characters. The locally owned and operated tour company was founded by two street performers 16 years ago and now offers four tours. 

“Hey Asheville” is a city tour and vaudeville on wheels. “Fender Bender” mixes live music on the bus and beer tasting, making an original, fun Asheville brewery tour. “Ghosted” offers a haunted comedy tour, and “Lil Boogers” is their kid-friendly option (the others have age limits, so please check ahead of time). All the tours are dog friendly!

2. See Asheville’s Top Attractions on the Gray Line Asheville Trolley

The Gray Line Asheville Trolley tour is one of the most popular Asheville tours, and for a good reason. It offers an excellent, award-winning Hop-On Hop-Off Tour that the Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County has endorsed. 

Visitors can listen to the live narration and get off the bus at one of the 10 stops (or all of them!) along the 15-mile route to experience Asheville’s breweries, shops, and the urban scene. Also, tickets are valid for two consecutive days!

This locally owned and operated business also offers a fun ghost tour, covering some of our most famous specters (we have plenty!), including the friendly Tim Burton-like ghost of the Pink Lady of the Grove Park Inn and the mystery of the Nazi agents based in Asheville.

The seasonal Holly Jolly Christmas Trolley Tour includes live music and Christmas caroling while driving past festive holiday decorations in downtown Asheville, Biltmore Village, and the Montford and Grove Park neighborhoods.

This self-guided Urban Trail Tour is a free audio tour offered by the City of Asheville and is a great way to get to know the city’s history at your own pace. It starts at Pack Place Park and follows 30 stations marked by cool sculptures. 

AVL Free Walking Tours offers a tip-based Asheville walking tour that ends with a free scoop of ice cream at The Hop . Their haunted tour (not free) starts at the Riverside Cemetery in the historic district of Montford and goes all the way downtown. It’s the only ghost tour that covers this super interesting cemetery.

The Asheville Coffee Tour features six of Asheville’s best coffee and tea shops. It includes short stops at Asheville’s landmarks and lots of caffeine! 

The Asheville Music History Walking Tour explores downtown through the stories of Asheville’s eclectic past and present music scene. It covers the Moogseum (which offers its own tour) and the famous venue The Orange Peel , among other local icons.

The Flying Bike provides electric bike tours around town. The Winter Warm Up E-Bike Tour is perfect for chilly days, and it includes stops at two local restaurants, hot cocoa, apple cider, and a visit to the historic Omni Grove Park Inn. 

Asheville Adventure Company features a scenic Asheville e-bike sunset tour, perfect for photos all year round but especially in the fall. The e-bike tours are kid-friendly if you’re traveling with kids. 

I’ve never taken a Segway tour, but I might because every time I see the Segway riders around my neighborhood, they look so content and relaxed. Moving Sidewalk Segway Tours offers a tour that covers downtown and other areas, like Montford and the greenways in North Asheville. The tour is 10 and up, and training is included!

5. Tour Downtown Asheville while Drinking and Pedaling on an Amazing Pubcycle

Amazing Pubcycle is one of the most trendy Asheville tours. The pedal-powered (motor-assisted) trolleys and their festive, laughing riders are becoming a happy downtown landmark. 

The company offers different tours perfect for parties and celebrations, including fun bachelorette parties, but you can also book individual seats. Guests will bring their own and serve their own beer, wine, cider, or seltzer and drink it on a 15-person pedal trolley driven by a certified, funny, and charismatic tour guide. 

Clients are welcome to wear costumes and bring decorations to customize their ride, so you can imagine what a fun sight these bikes are. The most popular offer is the Pub Tour in downtown Asheville which stops at one of Asheville’s best pubs. 

Also, they’re now offering a Trivia Tour on wheels! Riders have to be older than 12. There are 10 pedal seats and room for five non-pedalers. Yes, you do have to pedal, so enjoy your drink and your workout!

6. Embark on an Asheville Scavenger Hunt Tour

This is a fantastic plan for co-workers, friends, or family! Asheville Detours offers personalized team adventures that will bring you around downtown. You’ll follow clues like solving riddles and unscrambling letters while enjoying tasty treats and drinks and participating in fun group activities introducing you to some favorite local businesses. 

Asheville Detours has four offerings, and they can all be customized according to your preferences: The Bachelorette Tour, the Authentic Asheville Detour, the Family Fun Detour, and the Team Building Detour. Each hunt is self-guided and lasts approximately 3.5 to 4 hours.

Some stops and treats include eating donuts at the beloved Stay Glazed, tasting honey at Asheville Bee Charmer, group crafting at Fired Up, beer and chocolate tastings, and a champagne toast and private tour at Momentum Gallery.

7. Learn about Asheville’s African American Residents with this Award-Winning Tour

Hood Huggers International’s mission is to “rebuild Affrilachia through art, environment, and social enterprise.” Affrilachia is a term coined by Frank X Walker referring to African Americans living in Appalachia. 

In this context, Hood Huggers offers walking and driving tours that take visitors through the past and the present of African Americans in Asheville. This initiative won TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Award.

Two walking tours cover Eagle Street in downtown Asheville and Burton Street in West Asheville, and the driving tour begins downtown and visits different neighborhoods throughout the city. These Asheville tours cover the history of these communities, current projects, and visions for the future. They are aimed at visitors and locals alike. 

If you take these tours, you’ll learn about the history of Asheville, but you’ll also be supporting the economic development of Asheville’s African American communities and businesses. A portion of all proceeds through Hood Huggers International are reinvested in the community.

8. Get a Sugar High at French Broad Chocolate Company

French Broad Chocolate is one of Asheville’s favorite chocolate shops. Locals and visitors love stopping by the iconic blue building of the French Broad Chocolate Lounge in Pack Square and getting something sweet, from housemade bonbons and ice cream to cookies, cakes, and brownies, and a delicious selection of drinking chocolates.

All of the chocolate is made in their chocolate factory, and they offer a fantastic Bean to Bars Chocolate Factory Tour that covers an introduction to a cocoa farm, the company’s story, and an overview of the process of transforming cocoa beans into a chocolate bar. In addition, there are tastings of cacao in its different forms, including, of course, bonbons! 

French Broad Chocolate also offers tastings, so please check their calendar to see if you can catch one of them. This is an excellent tour for kids. I did it with mine years ago. Children under 7 don’t have to pay for a ticket.

9. Explore the River’s Arts District’s Shops and Art Galleries

There are about 200 studios in the 23 former industrial buildings along this one-mile stretch of the French Broad River called the River’s Arts District (RAD). There are different ways to explore this area, which is also home to excellent restaurants, cafés, and breweries. 

Each Saturday, Mountain Mural Tours offers a popular street art tour that departs from the River’s Art District but also includes downtown and West Asheville. You’ll learn about Asheville’s history while seeing some fantastic local art. Your Instagram account will thank you for that photo of a gigantic Dolly Parton!

Flying Bike Tours ‘ West Asheville River Arts District E-Bike Tour stops at some landmarks, including The Marquee, a design center where you’ll find pieces of art of all kinds, and The Peace Garden, an eclectic, beautiful community garden decorated with works from local artists using repurposed materials.

You’ll also love the free, tip-based walking tour offered by AVL Free Walking Tours and the concept of their photo stroll in the RAD, where you’ll relax while someone else takes care of the pictures in one of Asheville’s most photogenic neighborhoods. 

On the second Saturday of the month , there are special events in the RAD and a free trolley to tour the shops.

10.  Splash Around in One of the Four Oldest Rivers In the World

Some of the best things to do while in Asheville are to spend time outdoors, hike, enjoy the views, and play in the water. Did you know that Asheville’s French Broad River is among the four oldest rivers in the world? 

French Broad Outfitters offers a variety of fun French Broad River floating and kayaking experiences. You’ll love to see Asheville from a different perspective on a warm day and join locals in one of the most beloved Asheville summer activities. They also offer an e-bike Asheville breweries tour and SUP yoga classes.  

Asheville Adventure Company organizes guided whitewater French Broad rafting trips that are family-friendly. Wai Maina Asheville SUP Tours provides stand-up paddleboard tours and experiences that the entire family will love.

Zen Tubing will set you up with everything you’ll need to enjoy your lazy river float along the French Broad River like dozens of locals do on warm days. Of course, you’ll need to bring your bathing suit and sunglasses!

11. Take a Photo Tour to Polish Your Photography Skills (or Get Professional Shots)

Asheville Urban Arts Photo Tours offers professional shots in some of the most beautiful urban settings, including Asheville’s cool murals. There are three tours: Downtown Urban Vibe, the River Arts Tour, and the West Asheville Tour. 

The promise is to take you to “the most Insta-worthy art spots in Asheville.” You’ll receive a full gallery of ready-to-post photos in five days!

WNC Photo Tours provides private photography tours and workshops at the most scenic locations. You’ll learn how to take better photos with your camera or smartphone. Some of their options include photographing elks, a fall color tour, and one-on-one post-procession sessions. They also offer professional photo sessions.

Asheville Photo Tours ‘ excellent offerings cover vistas and waterfalls, private tours customized to your desires, and photographing the fall colors in the Blue Ridge Mountains. If you loved your photo tour so much you want to keep learning, they also offer private coaching sessions to work with you to develop your skills and online photo critiques.

12. Walk, Ride, Kayak, or Float to Asheville’s Best Breweries

Asheville (aka Beer City , USA) has more breweries per capita than any other city in the United States. With an average of 28.1 breweries per 100,000 residents and 100 local beers, it’s no wonder this city is a paradise for beer lovers worldwide.

Recognized by National Geographic and TripAdvisor, BREW-ed’s Brewery Tours offers one of the best Asheville brewery tours. These informative, educational walking tours are guided by Cicerone-certified guides. 

These beer experts will take you to some of the best downtown breweries where, besides tasting the local crafts, you’ll learn about the process of making beer and how Asheville’s beer culture has evolved over the years.

Asheville Brews Cruise is Asheville’s original, 16-year-old brewery tour and promises “an ample amount of beer” in its walking and mobile tours. All tours are knowledge-based and include visits to three or four Asheville breweries, tasting samples, lots of information, and fun guides.

15.  Tour Asheville’s Iconic Biltmore Estate and Omni Grove Park Inn

Visitors with a daytime ticket to visit the Biltmore Estate or overnight guests can participate in the tours offered by the Biltmore . Some tours are self-guided and included with admission, while others have a fee. 

They offer bike riding, wine and chocolate tasting, and rooftop tours. The interesting Biltmore House Backstairs Tour will give you a glimpse of the lives of the people who worked at the house, taking you to the overlooked domestic areas.

Welcome to our guide on the Asheville Trolley Tour ! While it’s officially the ‘Gray Line’ trolley, everyone here knows and loves it as THE trolley. I love spotting trolley tours when I am around town– and this happens a lot because the trolley stops all over the place.

This guide to the Asheville Trolley details stops, the schedule, pricing and more.

From experience, we highly recommend the trolley for both visitors and locals . It’s such a great way to explore Asheville and get the lay of the land. You’ll enjoy the sights, hop around as needed and also learn a little while doing so.

Not only is it a novel experience for kids (and people who used to be kids!), but it also takes away any worry about getting around the city or parking. You can just sit back and relax while seeing what the city has to offer. We love it so much that it’s on our list of favorite things to do in Asheville!

Asheville trolley pricing, frequently asked questions about the asheville trolley, stops on the asheville trolley.

There are ten trolley stops total, taking you as far north as the Omni Grove Park Inn and as far south as Biltmore Village. The trolley tour officially starts in Montford at the Asheville Visitor Center , though, as the name implies, you can hop on anywhere!

Below you will details on the stops along with information about each area.

Trolley Stop 1: Asheville Visitor Center (Montford)

The Asheville Visitor Center is a great place to begin the tour if driving in because you’ll find free parking at the visitor center . You can also pick up local brochures and coupons, as well as get ideas for things to do from the volunteers there.

If you want to stroll a bit, head down Montford Ave to check out the magnificent historical homes on the tree-lined street. You can grab a coffee or bite to eat any time of the day at All Day Darling before heading back to the visitor center for your next trolley stop: The Omni Grove Park Inn .

Trolley Stop 2: Omni Grove Park Inn

What a stop! Whether you are checking in for the night or just want to soak up the view, you are sure to enjoy your time at the Omni Grove Park Inn.

There are restaurants on the premises (make sure to make a reservation), nearby galleries and even an antique car museum. Trolleying in is great because parking can be a bit tricky at times. Don’t miss the mega fireplaces and beautiful views.

Trolley Stop 3: Renaissance & Four Points Hotels in downtown Asheville

After your visit to the Omni Grove Park Inn, you’ll head south on the trolley to the downtown Asheville area. There are actually four stops downtown, so no need to hop off at the hotels unless you are staying at one.

You will get closer to downtown’s shops and restaurants on the next few stops. But bonus points for these hotels being on the tour! It definitely makes getting around the city easier when visiting.

Trolley Stop 4: Pack Square

Welcome to downtown Asheville! There are so many great local shops and eateries here. When the weather is nice you’ll also enjoy the sound of buskers.

The first stop downtown is at Pack Square. You’ll love this stop if French Broad Chocolate is on your must-visit list. And if it’s not, well, add it!

The Pack Square stop is a great place to begin your downtown exploration. There is plenty within walking distance, including Stay Glazed Donuts (they are on our best donut shops in Asheville list !), The Rhu for a breakfast pastry or sandwich and Mast General Store for shopping.

Stop by Double D’s Coffee if having coffee at the top of a parked double-decker bus is on your Asheville bucket list! And if it’s lunchtime and nice out, Salsa’s offers an exceptional meal with great patio seating in the alleyway.

Just across the street from Salsa’s you’ll find Kress Emporium , featuring the work of over 80 local artists. It’s a great spot for fun jewelry finds, art, candles and things you didn’t know you needed but can’t live without.

The Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS) is just a few shops down from Kress. It’s a great stop if you are traveling with kids and need to give them time to burn off energy. You can read about our trip to AMOS with our two kids here !

There are two more stops downtown before the trolley heads to the River Arts District. You can either hop back on the trolley at the Pack Square stop or do a walking tour and meet it again at a stop further down the line.

Downtown is very walkable and you’ll pass by tons of great shops and restaurants if you walk to the next stop, including S&W Market .

The S&W Market

S&W is a food hall and taproom with several great restaurants to choose from. It’s a great stop for groups because everyone can grab their favorite type of food! We absolutely love getting chicken sandwiches from Buxton Chicken Palace and steamed buns from Bun Intended . Read more about the S&W Market here !

Trolley Stop 5: Haywood Park Hotel

If you decided to take the trolley from Pack Square instead of walking, you won’t go too far! The trolley stays downtown, stopping again at the Haywood Park Hotel . This is another area of town filled with shops, restaurants, coffee shops, dessert shops, galleries… ok, you get the picture. It’s also another great base for adventuring out.

Don’t miss the Woolworth Walk just across from where the trolley stops. It’s a two-story art gallery and emporium, complete with a nostalgic vintage soda fountain and diner inside.

You’ll find Malaprop’s Book Store just down the way, which is locally owned and filled with great finds. We love their selection of kids’ books! There are also a ton of other local shops around here as well as the iconic flat iron sculpture.

If you haven’t stopped in Moonlight Makers yet, take a quick trip down the hill behind Malaprop’s to do so! We love this gift shop because there are so many great local Asheville finds, as well as punny screen printed shirts, dishtowels and bags, clever mugs, stickers and unique gifts.

Across from the Haywood Park Hotel stop is James Beard Award-winning restaurant Chai Pani . Expect excellent Indian street food and a cool vibe. It’s next to Kilwin’s if you are in need of fudge, ice cream or other sweet treats.

Trolley Stop 6: Grove Arcade

There’s one more stop downtown before the trolley heads to the River Arts District- and it’s a good one: The Grove Arcade.

The building itself is a work of architecture and the shops and restaurants are just as charming. Inside you’ll find tons of local stores, like Asheville NC Home Crafts and the Mission at the Grove . It’s a great place to find a souvenir or two.

There are several restaurants located at the Grove Arcade that have outdoor seating along Page Ave ( Modesto , Burgerworx and Carmel’s Kitchen .) You’ll find great food and excellent people-watching! One of our favorite spots to grab lunch at the Grove Arcade is the Middle Eastern grab-and-go Baba Nahm . You can order online and it’s always fresh and delicious.

Summit Coffee is also located in the Grove Arcade. They are a roaster out of Davidson, NC and have great blends that are always a part of our mornings at home! Oh, and don’t miss Battery Park Book Exchange ! It’s a great spot to grab a book, a latte or a glass of champagne if you’re feeling fancy.

This stop is just down from Haywood Park Hotel and you can easily walk between the two. No need to wait for the trolley to make your way to the Grove Arcade,

Ok, that’s it for downtown stops on the trolley! Next up is the River Arts District !

Trolley Stop 7: River Arts District (North)

The Asheville Trolley stops twice in the River Arts District (RAD), which is great because there are two distinct parts of it. It’s walkable, though, but just…. bring your walking shoes if you decide to do that instead of taking the trolley! We’ll highlight a few things about the RAD here, but if you want all the details then hop over to our full guide to the River Arts District !

The first stop in the RAD takes you to the northern part of the district. Here you’ll find one of my favorites to peek in and watch in awe: the North Carolina Glass Center . Not only can you catch a glimpse of what they have going on, but they also offer classes , like the 30-minute make-your-own ornament or paperweight class. And, of course, you can shop there too!

In addition to the glass center, there are a ton of other studios and galleries around. We love checking out the working Mark Bettis Studio Gallery . There you’ll find paintings, sculptures, glassworking and more. Close by is the Hofman Studios , an artist-owned pottery studio featuring handbuilt porcelain that use antique lace to create patterns. All of the pieces are just so beautiful and unique there. It’s a great place to grab a special souvenir.

As far as eats and drinks go, Ultra Coffee has awesome coffee and breakfast sandwiches! The Bull and Beggar is also in this area, though it’s only open for dinner. Wedge Brewing Company has two locations in the RAD, one of which is in this area. They are open in the afternoons and feature a rotating list of food trucks. If you are looking for a grab-and-go lunch option, check in to the newly opened MOTHER Bread to see if they have a jambon beurre sandwich (ham and butter!) ready to go. They also make great pour-overs.

Explore a new area of the RAD

Now, here’s where you decide if you want to backtrack to take the trolley from where you were initially dropped off in the RAD or if you will continue your walking tour to another mini-part of the area. If you opt to walk, you’ll pass by several more studios and restaurants that you would otherwise miss. We recommend it if you have time!

If you decide to explore, take a stroll down toward the Lyman St traffic circle. Take a right there to check out CURVE studios or continue straight to get to another set of studios and eats. Fresh Wood Fired Pizza , Grind AVL coffee shop and PennyCup Coffee are all located on the way. Psst: both coffee shops are on our best coffee shops in Asheville list ! The restaurant Vivian is also located here and is a great spot for dinner or brunch!

You’ll have to turn around to get to the next area of the RAD, and then you can either hop on the trolley to get to the next stop or walk. If you walk, take the traffic circle from Lyman Street toward Riverside Ave. There’s a river walk there that will take you down to the next area of the RAD. It would be fun on a really nice weather day to stretch your legs, but you may want to skip the walk and take the trolley back. Either way, next stop: River Arts District part 2!! 🙂

Trolley Stop 8: River Arts District (South)

This is such a fun stop on the Asheville Trolley! Here you’ll find art studios, eateries and a ton of large graffiti murals. Woodworking, glassworking, galleries, antique stores and even an indoor skatepark are all within walking distance.

Riverview Station is a large, two-story building that features the work of over 60 local artists, craftspeople and entrepreneurs. There you’ll find jewelry, paintings, photography, textiles, ceramics, sculptures and glass. Marquee is also a great stop for art, antiques, decor and jewelry. Marquee has grab-and-go food and a taproom!

Speaking of eating, 12 Bones Smokehouse (ribs!!), Summit Coffee and Wedge Brewery ‘s second location are all located pretty close to one another in this area of the RAD. We love grabbing a beer at Wedge Brewery at Foundation and a burger from the Chop Shop food truck there. A+ beer, burgers and outdoor seating! Unlike the rotating food truck vendor list at Wedge Brewery at Wedge Studios (north RAD), their Foundation location features the Chop Shop’s truck daily. Further south, you’ll find Rosabees and Plēb Urban Winery .

Whew, what a day so far! Next up: Biltmore Village! Well, kind of….

Trolley Stop 9: DoubleTree Biltmore Village

No need to hop off at the DoubleTree stop unless you are staying at the property! I really do love that the trolley stops at several hotels along the way- it makes it so easy for visitors.

Trolley Stop 10: Biltmore Village

Alright so here’s the real stop for Biltmore Village. You’ll be dropped off right in front of the Olde World Christmas Shop , so be prepared to feel festive.

Biltmore Village is a historic area and just as charming as can be! It’s across from the Biltmore Estate entrance and was originally built to house the employees. Today it is full of shopping and dining opportunities. You’ll find everything from local shops like Dogwood Darlings Children’s Boutique and Provisions Mercantile to bigger stores like Williams-Sonoma and Lululemon . Finch and Well-Bred are both great places to pop in for an afternoon treat, and Cantina has excellent Mexican food!

That’s a wrap!

What a day! This is the last stop of the tour before the trolley heads back to the Asheville Visitor Center in Montford. And then you can do it all again!

Speaking of, did you know your ticket is good for TWO days on the trolley ? This is awesome if you missed something and want to circle back or maybe you just want to try different restaurants this time around. Having two days definitely takes the pressure off of needing to see it all the first time.

The Trolley schedule changes with the season, so make sure to check their site for the most up-to-date info. Below is the schedule as of winter 2023. The exact hours for each stop are listed on their site !

• January-February: Monday, Thursday-Saturday (limited schedule)
• March : daily (limited schedule)
• April-October : daily (full schedule)
• November-December : daily (limited schedule)

They do not offer tours on New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, Asheville Holiday Parade Day (November 18, 2023), Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

As of winter 2023, child tickets (ages 5-11 years) are $15 and adult tickets are $37. These prices include TWO DAYS and unlimited hop-on/hop-off privileges. Children under 5 ride free.

Are you local to Asheville? Check out the Gray Line’s Ambassador Pass program where locals ride free with the purchase of 2 adult full-fare tickets. This is a great option if you have visitors in town and want to show them around. Full details on their ambassador program can be found on their site .

Short on time but still want to ride the trolley ? Purchase an overview tour ticket instead of the hop-on/hop-off one! The overview tour offers a complete tour of Asheville without hop-on/hop-off privileges. Overview tickets are $32 for adults and $14 for children and must be purchased at the Asheville Visitor Center.

Yes! Kids under 5 ride free and those between 5 and 11 are $15 each. This price includes two days.

Adventure Center of Asheville’s Adventure Mountain Off-Road Tours in Barnardsville, N.C ., is Asheville and Western North Carolina’s newest ultimate off-road driving experience.  Drive or Ride our Guided Tours in 4-person Off-Road Vehicles (ORV) on 220 acres of scenic mountain trails climbing up 1,400 feet on Adventure Mountain.  With an elevation of 4,200 feet at the peak, Adventure Mountain off-road trails travel through hardwood forests and extreme mountain terrain.   Start with a training area to develop your off-road skills, then follow our guide on technical trails, rock and log obstacles, hill climbs, and spectacular views.  

Our ORVs combine power and function to provide new or experienced drivers with a great adventure. Although they can go fast, our tours are not focused on speed but on learning and practicing the skills of managing challenges inherent in off-roading such as maneuvering around and over obstacles, climbing steep grades but also crawling down steep gradients, selecting the best course to traverse difficult spots successfully, and understanding capabilities of the ORV such as lateral stability, clearance, wheel locking and maneuvering capabilities.

Our training area will provide an opportunity to practice in an active, hands-on start. Once you’ve mastered your machine, it’s game on!! Our ORV course will include the best of our Adventure Mountain property: a 1,400-foot elevation change with the highest peak at 4,232 feet while enjoying panoramic views of the highest mountains in the Eastern United States (Blue Ridge Mountains, Balsam Mountains, Mount Mitchell, and the Great Smoky Mountains).  Our 220 wooded acres have 7+ miles of ridgeline, lush valley, cliffside, creekside, and crossing trails. 

Our experienced and knowledgeable guides will lead the way while communicating with our guests.  Z1R Road Max Helmets are provided for each participant and are required for safety and comfort. 

Adventure Center of Asheville’s Adventure Mountain Off-Road Tours is not at our in-town location!! It is a short scenic drive from downtown Asheville just outside of the small community of Barnardsville, NC, in the Paint Fork Road Valley. The drive is the perfect distance to be as close to Asheville as possible while allowing you to get out in the woods.

Rules & Regulations

• Drivers are required to be 21 years of age or older and present a valid driver’s license.
• Riders are required to be 8 years of age and older.
• The total weight limit of all guests in one ORV cannot exceed 1,000 lbs. 
• Absolutely no alcohol or illegal substances on premises or consumption of any illegal substances before driving vehicles.  If there is suspicion, your tour will be canceled without a refund. 
• Tours Operate on Time.  There are NO refunds for late arrivals.  Please plan plenty of time for travel and check-in.  
• All riders are required to wear a seat belt, helmet, and helmet liner whenever the vehicle is moving.
• Waivers signed by legal guardians are required for riders and drivers.
• No refunds for inclement weather
• Dress for the weather on the mountain to play and get dirty! (Coats, Raincoats, Warm Layers, etc.)
• Closed Toe Shoes are required for all participants. 
• Water in reusable water bottles (no single-use plastic allowed)

There is limited outdoor (but private) space to change your clothes after your tour. 

• A bandana or buff to use as a helmet liner. 
• Valid driver’s license per ORV driver. 

**Important Note Regarding Weather**

Adventure mountain off-road tours will operate rain or shine..

Trail options may vary depending on the weather. Please dress for the weather and be prepared for the possibility that you will get dirty. Vehicles are open-air during the summer. A full enclosure can be provided during cooler seasons. Heat does come into the ORV from the engine and our AC is the breeze as you drive.

Cancellation Policy

We operate rain or shine except in severe weather that the management team deems hazardous. Advanced notice might not be possible. If we cancel the tour, Guests can choose between a full/partial refund, reschedule, or voucher.

Everyone can cancel up to 72 hours before the activity start time to get a full refund minus the 7.5% credit card and processing fee.

If you select for the Optional Trip Cancellation Guarantee, you can cancel

• up to 24 hours before the activity to get a refund minus the  7.5% credit card and processing fee.
• within 24 hours of the start of the activity get a voucher

Damage Insurance Policy

There are basic expectations of wear and tear on our orvs when being used on our trails. the wear and tear from making contact with the ground while driving on our designated trails and following your guide is the responsibility of adventure mountain off-road tours., $40 optional non-refundable damage insurance per vehicle.

For a Non-Refundable Fee of $40 per vehicle, all approved drivers are covered for any and all vehicle damage during the appropriate use of the vehicle unless they are willfully disregarding the rules, the Adventure Mountain Guides, or the designated trail routes.

Damage Insurance Contract

If declining the Damage Insurance Fee, a ny damage caused to the ORV by the purposeful or accidental impact is the responsibility of the driver regardless of who is driving the ORV at the time the damage occurs. 

Including: :

• with other Off-Road Vehicles (ORV) while on the tour, parked, or passing
• with objects from the established trails
• by rolling or flipping the ORV
• by driving over the directed speed
• by not following the rules provided both verbally and/or in writing

A credit card must be on file with Adventure Mountain Off-Road Tours and the owner of that card will be charged the fees required to repair any damage plus 10% for transportation and loss of use of the vehicle. A receipt for the repairs will be provided with the charges. The cardholder agrees to accept this responsibility and the fees as stated above. Every effort will be taken to minimize the cost of parts and services to return the ORV to its previous condition prior to the damage.

This agreement is a legally binding contract between Adventure Center of Asheville (dba. Adventure Mountain Off-Road Tours) and the cardholder and cannot be revoked by refusal to pay or by the dispute of charges to the card issuer. Charges can range from $500 to $25,000. Damage insurance is available prior to the tour start time for a fee or you can check with your credit card company/issuer or personal auto insurer to determine any existing coverage you may have.  We take numerous precautions to assure you get the adventure intended.  But variables out of our control such as weather conditions and varying degrees of driving experience can cause conditions to change. 

Frequently Asked Questions

Probably! Depending on the weather your clothes and shoes could get wet and muddy. The vehicles are open-air without heat or AC so be prepared for all elements. 

You may also get into a muddy ORV that has just been on a tour. 

Dress for the changing mountain weather and temperatures. We recommend you check the forecast for Barnardsville, N.C. for your tour day. It can be cool in the morning and late afternoon but warm mid-day. Layers are highly recommended unless it’s full summer or winter. The vehicles are open-air without heat or AC so be prepared for all elements. 

Comfortable Closed Toe Shoes are Required.  Shoes and Clothes may get dirty.

• We will provide snacks and water at certain breaks along the tour. You are welcome to bring your own water container but we ask that no “sticky” drinks be opened except when out of the vehicle as spills are likely and messy for you & the next Guests. Water with reusable water bottles is recommended.
• No single-use plastic is allowed on tours.
• Cell phones and/or cameras are welcome. There will be secure storage available but all items brought are “At Your Own Risk.” You will typically have opportunities to take pictures and videos inside and outside of your ORVs.
• Bring your own bandana or buff for your personal helmet liner. 
• Bring a valid driver’s license for all drivers. 

Hats- We will be wearing helmets so hats should be left in your vehicle. 

Firearms/knives/sharp objects- No firearms, please. No knives unless secured where they will not puncture soft goods. Damage coverage does not cover damage from personal items (knives, pens, etc.) cutting/tearing seats. Please remove all those items from your pockets. 

Valuables- Wallets, jewelry, and all valuables are best locked into your car, and keys are secured in our office. You can take them with you but if lost they are probably lost for good or our search will likely require a later time (based on our tour schedule) and a fee for the time vehicles and staff are occupied searching. Best to leave that all secure in your vehicle. 

Trash/Food- No plastic & excessive trash/food. Please allow time to eat meals before arriving or prior to your trip. There are a few shared picnic tables if you would like to eat prior to or following your tour. 

Single-use plastics

Our goal is to make it as fun, interesting, and exciting as possible while keeping safety as our top priority. Guests are allowed to drive. Training and practice areas are included at the start of the tour. The equipment we provide is top-of-the-line and exceeds any other tour we’ve experienced in the Southeast. This will improve your overall experience. Your guide is not just there to guide you but to teach and to help you make choices on the easiest and most challenging options when possible. Our tours are small and our property is pristine. You will experience obstacles, climbs, descents, and technical challenges.

There will be some “power areas” where you will accelerate but this tour is not meant to be a “fast” experience. This is an off-road experience with rugged terrain that may include steep climbs, uneven terrain, jolting bumps, trees, tree branches, water, mud, slippery areas, dust, and other objects that might become airborne or could hit or be hit by Guests or the ORV. You or another tour member might get stuck or have mechanical challenges that cause the group to focus on those issues which can alter any tour. There is always the limited possibility a vehicle can roll but speed and lack of training/supervision is the most common cause of rolling vehicles. This is part of off-roading and will be handled as quickly as possible but can change the tour experience. 

Adventure Mountain is located at 369 Paint Fork Road in Barnardsville, NC.  (Not at the Adventure Center of Asheville.) You may use the Google Map below for directions, however, there are 2 ways to get there from Asheville, a scenic mountain drive and an interstate route.

Scenic Valley with Mountain Pass Directions- approximately 1.5 miles of curvy mountain road

• Take Hwy 19/23, I-26/Future 26 North toward Weaverville UNCA for 5.7 miles
• Exit 21 New Stock Rd
• Turn right at the base of the ramp traffic light then immediately left onto Weaverville Rd/US 19/23 business for 0.6 miles 
• Turn right onto Reems Creek Rd. for 6.8 miles
• Turn left onto Maney Branch Rd for 3.3 miles. (Notice: Maney Branch goes over a short mountain pass that has about 1/2 mile up and 1 mile down of curvy roads.)
• Maney Branch becomes Paint Fork Rd at the top of the pass.
• Adventure Mountain is on your left about 0.4 miles past The Barn at Paint Fork

Interstate Route

• Take I-26, US 19/23 12 miles from Downtown Asheville
• Take Exit 15 towards Barnardsville on 197
• Turn right and go 5.9 miles on Barnardsville Hwy to Barnardsville
• Turn right on Paint Fork Rd. Follow signs to Barnardsville Elementary, Bad Axes, and Adventure Mountain Resort.
• From Barnardsville Hwy: Exactly 2.0 miles on Paint Fork Rd. to AMR-ORV Tours.

Adventure Details

Your scenic sunset eBike tour of Asheville begins at 99 Riverside Drive in North Asheville . Tours start right around dusk, and the exact start time will vary depending on the time of year. You will be notified of the exact time prior to your tour!

At the shop, you’ll meet your experienced guides and get oriented with eBikes and eBike safety. Once we hit the road, you’ll cruise through some of Asheville’s most iconic spots, including the Patton and Town mountains. Your guide will treat you to interesting facts about the city of Asheville, steer you toward the best photo ops, and if you’re lucky, you may even encounter some local wildlife. The tour will also include a cruise through downtown Asheville, a quick stop at the historic Grove Park Inn for photos, and a stop in Asheville’s River Arts District. The final stop will take you back to our shop, where you can enjoy a complimentary beverage on our patio.

Prior to your trip, you’ll receive an email/text notification with all the details, including the exact meeting time. Trips will take place rain or shine, and cancellations must be 48 hours in advance. If the weather is especially inclement, we will contact you with alternate arrangements.

All participants will be provided with a Giant Vida eBike and a bike helmet for their trip. The eBikes are equipped with headlights for safe riding after sunset. Folks of all fitness levels can enjoy an easy and fun ride through Asheville’s varied terrain, as the bikes require little exertion. Participants can wear comfortable clothing and should bring a lightweight jacket in case the weather gets cooler after sunset. The bikes do not have storage so participants should bring a backpack or waist pack to store belongings and a snack or a bottle of water.

The Sunset eBike Tour is a tour that is led by experienced guides who are familiar with Asheville and can help you experience the city and surrounding mountains like a local. All of our guides live in the Asheville area and are familiar with both popular spots and unique sites that make Asheville stand out as a favorite vacation getaway. Tours can be tailored to the group’s interests and can create a memorable tour that you’ll love.

The guided eBike tour is a 14-mile, leisurely-paced tour that lasts approximately 2-3 hours and includes plenty of breaks to take photos. Because the eBikes you’re riding on have pedal-assist motors, riders of all activity levels are able to cross varied terrain and make mountain climbs without the fatigue of a standard bicycle. The ride will also include a visit to a historic local hotel, the Grove Park Inn for some photo ops, and will conclude with a complimentary beverage on our shop’s patio.

To provide the best experience and ride possible, groups are limited to a maximum of 10 participants age 16 and up. Trips can be specially arranged for larger groups, but please call in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cancellations are accepted 48 hours or more in advance. It’s better to let us know sooner rather than later so we can discuss options. We will issue a refund for your eBike Tour with 48 hours of notice or if the tour is canceled due to inclement weather.

Our bike trips are for individuals aged 16 and up.

Anyone who has ridden a traditional bike can master an eBike. Before the ride, your guide will walk everyone through eBike usage, safety, and etiquette. Once everyone in the group feels comfortable, the tour shall begin!

Safety is the utmost priority at Asheville Adventure Company (with fun making a close second). Your tour guide is tasked with ensuring you understand how to use your eBike and equipment before the ride begins. Your guide will also provide safety instructions if you encounter any wildlife along your ride through the mountainous terrain. You may encounter wildlife on your tour. Wild turkeys and bears are possibilities, and bears tend to stay away from a boisterous batch of bikers.

The Sunset eBike Tour does not include a stop for food. We recommend eating before you arrive for your tour or bringing your own snacks.

No, water and snacks are not provided. If snacks are needed, we recommend bringing along your own in a small day pack or backpack.

Our tour covers approximately 14 miles, and the total duration of the trip, including stops, will be around 2-3 hours. Most riders find the eBikes make Asheville’s hilly terrain easy to navigate, and do not have difficulty keeping up with the pace of the trip.

If the weather creates an unsafe situation, we will cancel your tour. We make the call as close to the tour time as possible, which still gives people a chance to plan accordingly. Light rain is generally not an issue for riders, but if rain is forecast, we will decide together at the time of the tour whether to embark. In the case of unsafe weather, your tour will either be rescheduled or refunded.

Rising Appalachia Share New Music Video & Hometown Travel Guide To Asheville, NC

The life of a touring artist isn’t for the weak. As most fans and musicians are aware, artistic preservation demands a break from time to time to make space for re-centering, writing, and relaxing . With that, it only made sense when globally recognized Americana and world folk ensemble Rising Appalachia announced that they’d be taking a creative sabbatical from the road to work on new music.

With several weeks into their global travel rest, frontwomen sisters Leah Song and Chloe Smith have announced their upcoming album, Folk and Anchor . The project will see the group release an all-new collection of thoughtful reimaginings of cover songs spanning the likes of Bob Dylan, James Blake, Erykah Badu, Beyonce, and beyond. Due out May 17th, Folk and Anchor will showcase the group’s eclectic style, inviting old and new listeners into a rich musical journey.

“We grew up immersed in a musical family, and our songwriting and performance has been deeply influenced by so many Americana genres over the years,” says Leah Song.

“We wanted to create a body of work where all those influences could be showcased under one roof…As folk musicians, we have always been inspired by public music that is not our own. Along with songwriting, we have always played tunes and traditionals from Appalachia, Ireland, and beyond. With this album we were inspired to branch out and do our spin on some different styles of music, ranging from pop to folk to soul. The artists we chose to cover are both contemporary favorites as well as people we grew up listening to and adoring. It has been a treat to sit back in Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC and work on these renditions of beloved songs.”

With a month out from the full album release, Rising Appalachia has released the first single, “The Bones.” Originally recorded by Maren Morris and Hozier, the new single is accompanied by a music video that sees the group harmonizing in their hometown of Asheville, North Carolina .

We are usually out and about in the woods around these mountains more than in town, foraging or cold plunging or taking in the splendor of birdsong in the green hills. Best Brewery In The 828: The Wedge

The Wedge ! Always and forever old school. We love them because they are the original brewery in Asheville. The iron work around the brewery is incredible and the river arts district is steezy and pleasing on the eye for an artist.

Favorite Hiking Trails: Craggy Gardens/Shining Rock

We are sneaky about this and won’t share our favorite so as to keep the trails we love quiet…however…some more well known ones we love are Craggy Gardens during the autumnal season and the hike up to Shining Rock via the Art Loeb trail. There are so many great trails in every direction of this mountain region. What a treasure to spend a day in the woods.

Best Place To See Live Music: Salvage Station

Salvage Station for outdoor live music…kudos to our sound engineer Scarekrow that runs sound there. It’s right on the river which is a sweet spot to listen to music in town. They have ample parking and it’s an old salvage yard so it’s rustic and charming. We also love the Grey Eagle for more intimate shows. They are a staple of the Asheville music scene and have been for many years, so it’s important to support businesses who have been here for a long time amidst the insane growth of this town. Lastly, the LEAF Festival is a gem of a music and arts event here and we have been going since we were babies.

What Do You Want People To Know About Asheville?

We recommend Asheville city council and residents to help this town grow smart and not fast. With so many people moving to the area, there is a high need for bike lanes, affordable housing, and water management to name a few. There are tons of good people working on these agendas locally so get involved if you love living in this town!

Murder charge now brought against passenger in alleged West Asheville crosswalk assault

ASHEVILLE - A car passenger who police say was shown in a video forcefully shoving down a pedestrian after he tapped on the hood of the car is now facing a murder charge.

Tyler Coenraads, 24, of Marathon Lane west of Asheville, had been charged with assault inflicting serious bodily injury for pushing down Gregory William Martin , 73, in a West Asheville crosswalk Feb. 29. Martin later died from injuries sustained when he hit the ground, according to authorities. And now the charge has now been upgraded to second-degree murder, according to a warrant obtained by the Citizen Times.

The April 5 warrant issued for Coenraads' arrest was served 7:14 a.m. April 8 with Coenraad turning himself in at magistrate court. It said he did "unlawfully, willfully and feloniously did kill Gregory William Martin, another living human being, with malice."

No bond was given "per the Pretrial Integrity Act," according to Magistrate M.P. Moss who signed the document that said Coenraads' release was not authorized. He is being held in the Buncombe County jail, which listed Coenraads as 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighing 270 pounds.

Coenraads' first appearance in Buncombe County District Court was 9 a.m. April 8.

Martin was using a crosswalk Feb. 29 at the intersection of Haywood Road and Interstate 240 when he tapped on the hood of a stopped vehicle, police said. (Earlier APD news releases had incorrectly said the intersection of Haywood and Craven Street.) The passenger of the vehicle, later identified by APD as Coenraads, emerged from the vehicle and pushed the pedestrian to the ground. He then got back in the vehicle, which fled the scene.

Martin suffered severe head trauma and was transported to Mission Hospital,  where he later died.

A video supplied by police shows a white SUV stopped at what appears to be the top of the exit ramp of I-240 and Haywood with its right blinker on. A man in a dark hoodie is crossing on Haywood and walks around the car, which is blocking the crosswalk. He taps hard on the hood with his left hand. With his back turned to the car, he gestures with both arms in the air. He then turns back to the car and walks toward the driver's window and the car rolls forward.

The vehicle then stops abruptly and a bearded man in a baseball hat exits quickly and runs around the front of the car. The man on foot had started to walk away and the bearded man shoves him hard in the back.

The Citizen Times reached out to Coenraads' attorney, Al Messer.

Asheville Police searching for answers in 2022 homicide case

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (FOX Carolina) - The Asheville Police Department said investigators are still searching for answers in a homicide case in which a man was fatally shot two years ago.

Officials said on April 12, 2022, 27-year-old Lamichael Shawn Carter was shot in a west Asheville neighborhood. He was found dead in the roadway around 11:30 p.m.

Despite ongoing efforts by detectives, crucial questions remain unanswered, leaving a family shattered and a community searching for resolution.

“My son’s death was a very traumatic event for my family and friends, taking a life is not a choice for us here on earth. Our time comes when God sees it to be”, said Wendy, Mother of Lamichael. “Our communities are being damaged and hurt because of the gun violence that is affecting our people in Buncombe County. We need to come together and support each other and love each other to heal each other. Please, if anyone knows, has heard, or seen anything that night or day, please come forward to APD. My family would greatly appreciate someone speaking up for my son who now has no voice.”

The case remains an active investigation.

Asheville's Claxton Elementary School celebrates 100 years of educating children

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Generations of families celebrated 100 years of education at a beloved Asheville City Schools elementary school on Saturday, April 13.

Claxton Elementary is turning a century old, and plenty of elementary students are celebrating getting to go to the historic school. Parents and school staff organized a huge block party event that included a performance by the Claxton Centennial student choir.

Claxton opened in 1924 and was renovated 20 years ago. Inside, students decorated the halls for tours.

Fourth grader Grea Brown proudly showed off his art class collage of the state of North Carolina.

"My favorite things about the school is I have lots of friends and, um, each class is specifically picked for different kids and that’s all," Brown said.

Great proudly took News 13's Kimberly King for a tour of Claxton.

School leaders talked about the school's history -- most importantly, integration of Black students coming to Claxton in 1962. Prior to that, it was a whites-only school.

The staff echoed the sentiment that they are proud of where the school has come and look forward to another century with great kids.
