SPM Essay Writing Guide – Format, Examples
The SPM exam is a challenging time for Malaysian students. It’s an opportunity to showcase their knowledge and skills, but it can also be confusing as the requirements are constantly changing. For example, this year there is no essay marking scheme provided by the Ministry of Education or any other official source on how essays should be assessed. This blog post will guide how to write an engaging essay that is sure to impress your teacher and get you top marks.
What is SPM?
The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), or the Malaysian Certificate of Education, is a national examination taken by all fifth-form secondary school students in Malaysia. It was created to test what they have been learning over their course of study and aspires them for higher education opportunities abroad.
Malaysians take the SPM exam that is set and examined by a Malaysian Examinations Syndicate. This Syndicate is also known as Lembaga Peperiksaan Malaysia. The education system in Malaysia can be completed after passing this test, which is equivalent to O-levels at the secondary school level. It’s compulsory for those seeking tertiary education before taking it; only then will they have an idea of what field of study suits them best. The age for completion of this public examination is 18 years old and students must pass it to be eligible for higher education.
The syndicate has made Bahasa Malaysia, English (Bahasa inggeris), Islamic studies, moral studies, history, and mathematical reading a compulsion for the students.
The Islamic studies subject is a compulsion for Muslim candidates. And moral studies are compulsory for non-Muslim candidates. The science coursework is common and compulsion to all students, but you can choose your elective subjects from these core courses below:
- Arts And Health- Music education, visual arts education, and sports science knowledge.
- Language And Literature- Malay literature, English literature, Chinese language, Arabic language(advanced), Chinese, Tamil, Iban, Arabic language for communication, English for science and technology, Chinese literature, Tamil literature, French language, and Punjabi language.
- Technical And Vocational- Agricultural science, home economics, engineering drawing, mechanical engineering studies, invention, food management, fashion design, engineering technology, domestic constructions, automobile servicing, etc.
- Science and Mathematics- additional Mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, additional science, information and communication, and applied science.
- Social Science And Religion- Business, entrepreneurial studies, principles of accounting, basic economics, Islamic worldviews, AL-Quran and As-Sunnah education, bible knowledge, etc.
SPM Essay Format
SPM essay writing is divided into two parts, part A and part B
Part A- This section is where you’ll be writing an essay, a report, or a letter. You’re given 45 minutes to answer this and it’s compulsory for you as only one question will bring in 35 marks- so make sure not to skip over the questions! Your examiner may award 3/35 points for your format, 12/35 points on content, and 20 out of 35 if they think that your language (grammar) is good enough.
Part B – This is the section where you apply all your knowledge of writing skills. It’s also a place to study grammar rules and how they work. Take some time now before we dive in so that by taking this bird’s eye view of it, you’ll know what to expect from this portion of our coursework.
- You will be given five options and you have to opt for only one.
- 60 minutes will be given to students to read all the questions thoroughly and plan key points for the same.
- This part carries 50 marks.
How to Write SPM Essay
Introductory paragraph:.
- Always write general information to write an introductory paragraph.
- Write at least 6-7 sentences.
- Use proper grammar, punctuation, and correct spelling.
Body Paragraph:
- Write at least the main idea
- 3-4 supporting details
- One conclusion paragraph
- Write 40-50 words
- Use correct grammar, correct spellings, and punctuation marks
Concluding Paragraph:
- Restate all the main ideas in a brief
- Write synonyms to restate your idea
SPM Essay Writing Tips
- Read all the questions wisely, some students make mistakes while selecting the question and later regret that they could have handled the other questions with much ease.
- Must choose a topic you are familiar with.
- Plan your essay like outline/ideas/thoughts/supporting points etc.
- Write sentences of different lengths a short sentence looks better after the long one.
- Always write neat and clean must use bullet points etc.
- Pay strict attention to the length of an essay, you have to write no less than 350 words if you write less than that, then you will be penalized, also never write extend your essay from 600- to 1000 words the more you write, the more the mistakes will happen.
- Always spare 10 minutes to proofread and edit an essay.
- After opting for a topic for an essay you can either write descriptive, narrative, reflective, descriptive, argumentative/persuasive, or factual/expository), but according to my suggestion always choose a narrative essay because another one requires a lot of knowledge of current issues.
Types of SPM Essays
The types of essays in SPM are:-
- Narrative essay- To write an interesting narrative essay often needs the right ingredients – just as cooking up a plate of curry masala does. The first thing about writing such essays is one’s creative imagination; so long as they are imaginative enough and think out of their box, then any story becomes more exciting than ever.
- Descriptive essay- a descriptive essay is an essay that aims to describe one’s viewpoint of the world through observations and feelings. The goal of this type of essay is to provide a vivid portrayal of the subject to get readers excited about what they are reading.
- Factual Essay- A factual essay is a non-fiction form of writing that is typically used when discussing some point relating to science or history. Factual essays are very similar to research papers in structure and format; however, they both vary in the use of citations and footnotes.
- Reflective Essay- A reflective essay is a personal essay that focuses on the writer’s reflection about an event, experience, or topic. The goal of this type of essay is typically to think critically and deeply about something which has been experienced by the writer.
- Persuasive Essay- Persuasive essays are a common way to voice opinions and sway readers. Readers will often disagree, which is why writers need to present their point of view as persuasively as possible with evidence from research or arguments that the reader can’t refute.
Topics for SPM Essay
- Illustrate an adventurous activity that has been done recently. Describe the preparation you have done before that and how was your experience?
- Describe your College reunion of yours; explain how memorable for you it was?
- Describe the project conducted at your school and you have played the most important role, what was your experience with that?
- Should parents give freedom to children? Discuss
- Write a story about a neighbour who is very popular in your neighbourhood. Discuss the reasons that make the neighbour popular and what other residents think of the popular neighbour.
- Write a story about a young successful farmer who is very generous. End your story with: “My friends and I learned a lot, especially the meaning of generosity.”
SPM Essay Example for Malaysian Students
Schools and universities have turned to online classes during this pandemic. Your teacher asked about your experience with online classes.
In the wake of an infectious disease outbreak, Malaysia has had to change how its students are getting educated. The COVID-19 virus is spreading rapidly in schools and villages across Asia; as a result, many Malaysian children have been forced into remote learning for fear that they will come into contact with someone infected by this highly contagious pathogen. These changes force educators all over the world to switch from traditional teaching methods– instructing pupils face-to-face or via webcam–to online coursework where the distance between teacher and student is not just social but physical too. Some Malaysian kids accept these new conditions readily while others may be struggling with adapting because it’s difficult adjusting without close human interaction on a day today.
I reap the benefits of Online education, first of all, you will spend less than in traditional classrooms, you can easily communicate with your teacher, you will gain new technical skills, you can gain better self-motivation, and enjoy a broader perspective.
The demerits of Online learning are that it can cause social isolation, it also needs strong self-motivation and time management skills, lack of communication skills, preventing mischievous activity can be complicated, teacher-focused only on theoretical knowledge, not on practical, E-learning lack face to face communication.
With the unprecedented virus covid-19, safe to say that online learning is the best alternative we have now. In the future, I would opt for classroom learning it has various plus points that E-learning cannot replace.

My school trip essay
School trips leave a great impact in the mind of the student, where he goes without his family, with his friends and colleagues, which allow him to rely on himself and take responsibility and enjoy the activities of the trip.
Each school planning for trips is as a recreational and educational way, supervised by social workers and school supervisors, who planning visits, ticketing, bus booking, etc.
I went on a school trip to (name of the city) of (Governorate name). of (city area in km) and (population number) approximately.
I prepared my small bag and put sandwiches, juice and water for the trip. I went to sleep early to wake up early to be full of energy on the journey.
We rode the bus in front of the school in the early morning and we left our parents and friends who did not come with us.
The bus driver displayed a documentary about the city we were going to visit and the tour supervisor told us about the directions and instructions we should follow and how to act in case of lost. He provided us emergency numbers and asked us to write them in a paper and keep in our pocket.
We arrived at our destination and started visiting the (museum name) which is a large museum featuring many important items that tell us the history of the city.
Then we went to visit the open museum which is an open area with many beautiful items.
Then we went to visit the important landmarks of the city.
The last stop of the trip was to visit the amusement park, a recreational city with lots of games.
The supervisor gave us two hours to enjoy our time, play the games we want and assemble before the door of the amusement park in preparation for riding the bus and back to our city.
We gathered two hours later in front of the amusement park door, the supervisor checked everyone’s presence and then we boarded the bus and returned to our city.
It was a beautiful day we enjoyed it a lot and we saw many of the city’s famous sights.
We learned a lot about its history and the history of its inhabitants.
Finally, we reached our city late at night. Our families were waiting for us.
We thanked the tour supervisor and went to our homes to sleep and prepare for school the next day.
a memorable school trip essay
It’s great to enjoy a little bit away from school and home for rejuvenation and energy, and this is exactly what happened. After working hard and excelling in school, I was able to go out on an unforgettable school trip. Through this trip, I was able to define my goals and benefit greatly from them.
This was an excursion to one of the seminars of the great Steve Jones. Just being in the midst of this huge crowd of scientists, inventors and businessmen made me know what I want to become in the future, and what are my upcoming priorities.
On this journey I was able to find answers to many of my questions and found the inspiration I wanted. Now I want to become in the future an inventor of something useful that benefits humanity and achieve great success for me, whether material or moral, through fame.
It is wonderful to know the importance of technology to society and how we inevitably go to it and the development of all means of services around us. And with just a little bit of clinging to the dream and fighting for it like Steve did, I can certainly succeed too.
simple essay on school trip
I feel very happy to go on a trip to the football stadium. This was a big surprise for us, to be able to watch an important match with friends.
Of course, I watched many matches with my family before, but this time the experience is different because it is with my friends and I was able to express and launch my enthusiasm, without feeling any pressure.
I enjoy this experience so much, and for sure I want to repeat this experience in other activities. Now I can’t wait to go home and tell my brother about this experience, and that in the future he should try going out with his friends on school trips and enjoying this holiday. It gives great psychological comfort and a boost of activity that helps to return to study with full vitality and activity.
essay on school trip to a park
Oh my gosh, I can’t describe the beauty of nature that I enjoyed during my last school trip. There is a very big difference between the constant presence between the big and fast industrial life and the relaxation in the vast gardens and parks that do not contain any noise.
It is great to go through this experience and go to one of the most beautiful parks that contain very beautiful gardening works and organized views of trees and roses.
The wonderful engineering work that I saw in the park is one of the best landscapes that my friends and I enjoyed watching.
And certainly immediately we felt the amount of interest and love from the people responsible for this place, and how they can preserve and show this place this beauty.
Of course I would love to go back on a school trip to the park and enjoy physical games with my friends like we did. This was one of the things I enjoyed in nature. It is great to find large green areas. This helped me relax a lot.
school tour experience essay
I would very much like to write an article about my experience in the last school tour, and point out the things I liked the most.
I find this tour very different from many of our previous tours. Previously, the tour was in only one place, and curiosity and enthusiasm ended before the tour ended.
But certainly this was different when we were able to visit many places in the same tour, such as the museum, the garden and the library. All of these places had a different effect.
We find when visiting the museum and meeting one of the guides working in the museum that he has that interesting and funny way of explaining the holdings. It makes you want to know more about its origin and the civilization it comes from.
But due to the lack of time, this made me even more excited, eager to listen. I am also eager to see another place and enjoy. This made it more beautiful and did not leave any way for boredom.
When visiting the library, I was able to sign one of the famous books and see some of the authors of these books. I always watched this event through movies only. It is great to try this experience and get some interesting and useful books.
But certainly nothing is so wonderful after a long day of listening and paying attention as visiting the park and walking around it to release all that energy.
I cannot describe the beauty of how I felt in the experience of the games and activities that we did inside the park. I can say this was the best school trip experience I’ve ever had.
a school field trip essay in English
One of the great school field trips I enjoyed was this trip, this weekend we were able to go on a school field trip to the zoo.
And there were a lot of interesting animals that wanted to feed and take pictures, many pictures with them. But of course, every field trip cannot pass without new experiences, some of which you will benefit from and others that delight you.
I can’t stop laughing whenever I remembered the monkeys, and how they used to behave, I can’t believe how smart this animal is, and how it can make you happy at any time. And also watching the peacock, what a beauty!, I did not feel the consistency and beauty of the colors, as I saw in this bird.
It was wonderful to learn some information about the habitat of many animals, which made me very eager to read about them, how they live and how important the group is to them, and how to unite among them, such as the blue whale and other collective animals that live in groups and like the wolf as well.
Certainly this field trip was very wonderful and contained a lot of information that I benefited from.

Let’s take a look…
100 Words Essay on Educational Trip
Introduction.
Educational trips offer students a unique chance to learn in new environments. They are an effective way of teaching, making the learning process more enjoyable.
Benefits of Educational Trips
These trips allow students to see and experience things they wouldn’t in a classroom. It enhances their understanding and knowledge of the subject.
Learning and Fun
Educational trips are not just about learning. They also provide fun and relaxation, helping students to connect with their peers in a different setting.
In conclusion, educational trips are an essential part of learning. They provide a practical perspective, making education more interesting and memorable.
250 Words Essay on Educational Trip
Educational trips, often referred to as field trips, offer a practical learning experience that extends beyond the traditional classroom environment. These journeys hold a significant place in the educational curriculum, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application.
Value Addition to Learning
An educational trip provides a platform for students to encounter and explore new things in an authentic setting. It encourages experiential learning and makes education exciting and fun. The trip’s experiences help students understand concepts better, as it allows them to witness the practical implementation of theories learned in classrooms.
Development of Interpersonal Skills
Educational trips also foster interpersonal skills. Students get to interact with peers, teachers, and guides in a less formal context, which enhances their communication skills, teamwork, and leadership abilities. It also helps to instill a sense of responsibility as students are expected to conduct themselves appropriately outside the school environment.
Enhancement of Cultural Understanding
These trips often expose students to diverse cultures, traditions, and lifestyles, promoting cultural understanding and empathy. Visiting historical sites, museums, or interacting with local communities can provide students with a broader perspective of the world.
In conclusion, educational trips are a critical part of the learning process. They not only supplement classroom learning but also promote personal growth and cultural understanding. Therefore, educational institutions should prioritize these trips to enrich the overall educational experience of their students.
500 Words Essay on Educational Trip
The value of educational trips.
Educational trips, often referred to as field trips, are integral components of the learning process. They provide a practical, immersive experience that enhances academic understanding and contributes to personal development. The importance of such trips extends beyond mere recreation, offering a unique blend of education and entertainment.
Enriching Learning Experience
Educational trips offer an enriching learning experience that cannot be replicated within the confines of a classroom. They provide a hands-on approach to learning, making abstract concepts tangible. For instance, a trip to a museum can bring historical events to life, while a visit to a science center can elucidate complex scientific principles. Such experiences foster a deeper understanding and retention of academic content.
Development of Soft Skills
Beyond the academic enrichment, educational trips also foster the development of essential soft skills. They encourage teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. Students learn to navigate new environments, interact with different people, and manage unexpected situations. These skills are not only essential for academic success but are also invaluable life skills.
Exposure to Real-World Applications
Educational trips offer students the opportunity to see the real-world application of the knowledge they acquire in classrooms. A trip to a botanical garden, for instance, can demonstrate the practical application of botany, while a visit to a manufacturing plant can elucidate the principles of production and operations management. This exposure can help students make informed career choices and understand the relevance of their studies.
Enhancing Cultural Understanding
Educational trips, especially those to different countries or cultural settings, can significantly enhance cultural understanding and tolerance. They expose students to diverse cultures, traditions, and lifestyles, fostering empathy and respect for cultural differences. This multicultural exposure is crucial in our increasingly globalized world, where cross-cultural understanding is key to success.
Creating Lasting Memories
Lastly, educational trips create lasting memories and build camaraderie among students. Shared experiences, whether marveling at a historical artifact or navigating a new city, foster a sense of community and friendship. These memories often become cherished parts of a student’s educational journey.
In conclusion, educational trips are a critical aspect of the holistic learning process. They offer an enriching academic experience, foster the development of essential soft skills, provide real-world exposure, enhance cultural understanding, and create lasting memories. It is imperative for educational institutions to recognize their value and incorporate them into their curricula to ensure a comprehensive and engaging learning experience for students.

School Excursion Essay
Excursions are must, especially for students. They have a great educational value That is why schools often organize excursions for students. Apart from educating students and exposing them to various experiences, it is a great time of recreation. It is the day all students wait for eagerly.
My class was taken on an excursion last month. A bus was arranged. We sat in it and it took us to all the places we had to see. We were all very happy. We sang on our way and the bus speeded through various towns and villages. The sound of the horn was a constant irritant but we could tolerate it because we were too busy having a good singing session in the bus.
We were going to Agra from Delhi. The bus stopped on the way at a restaurant. We all got off the bus to have some refreshment. Our teachers had to take good care of us lest anybody got lost. After half an hour we were on our way again Many of my friends started feeling a little sleepy and tired.,
Soon we reached Agra. We formed a line and entered the guest house where our stay had been arranged. We were to see Fatehpur Sikri and the Taj Mahal and leave for Delhi the following day. We left our luggage in the guest house, freshened up and were on our way to see the Taj Mahal.
When I first set my eyes on the Taj Mahal, I was speechless It is rightly called one of the wonders of the world. A white marble dream was before our eyes. Many students began to click cameras. I took a closer look at the work done on the marble Inlay work which is a special feature with the artisans of Agra was visible on the walls of the Taj Mahal.
We sat down over the grass and played some games. All this time we had the beautiful Taj in view. Time and again would look up to glance at it. I could not resist walking around it several times It took me long to thoroughly absorb the beauty of this masterpiece.
We left for Fatehpur Sikri after that, it was a great experience to see the tombs of the ancient Mughal kings and queens. History suddenly came alive. I asked my teacher several questions to satisfy my curiosity about various details.
It was a memorable trip. We drove back home but the return journey was filled with a bit of sadness, It was the end of great two days in my school life.

Essay_an education trip to cameron highlands.
These are three essays I copied from other websites for your reference.
An Educational Trip to Cameron Highlands
On 21 June 2010, the Geographical Society of our school made an educational trip to Cameron Highlands. Thirty students/ members of the society accompanied by four teachers went on the trip. We set off at 6.30 am by coach and reached there at 9.00 am sharp.
The main purpose of the trip was to enable the members of the society to study nature and build better rapport among them. In addition, the students would be able to gain first hand knowledge on what they have learned in their Geography lessons. This would enable them to understand their lessons better.
The weather there was cool and refreshing. All the way up the hill, we saw beautiful lush greenery on the hill slopes. Our first stop was at a huge rose garden, probably one of the best in our country. Many varieties of roses were planted there. It was a fascinating sight to see shades of red, pink, yellow and orange roses swaying gently the breeze! There, we observed the workers working in the farm. Some were aerating the soil; while others were watering and trimming the plants.
After the rose garden, we visited a large tea plantation. There we saw vast areas of green tea shrubs growing on the hill slopes. The scenery was beautiful and refreshing! We witnessed women workers plucking young tea leaves with their nimble fingers, throwing them into the baskets strapped on their backs.
At 6.00 p.m. we headed home. We found the trip educational and beneficial. The members saw for themselves highland features such as hills and waterfalls and the co-relation between the cool climate and the economic activities.
