Uganda offers some of the most exceptional hunting on the African continent. Like Ethiopia, CAR, and Cameroon, it provides opportunity for hunters to seek specialty game found only in that country. It is a safe country, and allows for the hunter to embark on a truly wild and unique safari. Uganda is THE premier destination for hunting East African and Island Sitatunga, as well as Uganda Kob and Nile Buffalo. There is a myriad of other species that can be taken in Uganda. The convenient part of hunting in Uganda is that it can be added onto an existing safari while already in Africa due to the relative ease of getting there. Our outfitter maintains two primary concessions in the Kafu River Basin, and Aswa Lolim ranches. The Kafu River Basin covers about 5,000,000 hectares. The landscape in Kafu is mainly dominated by Papyrus swamps and dense bush thickets. Therefore it is a prime hunting ground for the East African Sitatunga, East African Bush Duiker, East African Bohor Reedbuck, Nile Bushbuck, Ugandan Defassa Waterbuck, Leopard, Common Oribi and Bush Pig. Aswa Lolim lies on the eastern side of the Nile. It covers 500,000 hectares and shares 110 km direct border with Murchsion Falls National Park in the south and about 78 km with the Nile in the west. The landscape is dominated by light rolling grass hills with palm trees, small valleys with creeks and light forest. Near the river you find dense forests and large stretches of papyrus swamps. Although many commercial farmers have settled in this prime hunting ground, it still realistic to get Nile Buffalo, Uganda Kob, Hartebeest and Waterbuck.

Uganda is enriched with an extraordinary variety of special game species, and can thus offer an unforgettable and very satisfying hunting experience. 

The special species such as Nile and Cape buffalo, Uganda kob, East African sitatunga and Jackson hartebeest are undoubtedly the species which attract most hunters to Uganda.

The hunters we have had in Uganda have been very pleased with their safaris. For buffalo the feedback has been that there were many very old dagga boys, a fantastic nature in a beautiful and varied habitat and a camp of much higher quality than expected. In general, the buffalo have had a very nice spread, typical East African. The buffalo shot were between 40 and 43 ".

The hunters we have had in Kafu have also been very impressed by the good organization, and the absolutely exceptional situtunga population with a really high trophy quality.

The hunt for the shy ghost of the papyrus forest, the sitatunga takes place in papyrus belts along the River Nile. These areas boast the highest concentration of sitatunga anywhere in Africa. It is not uncommon to see 7-25 sitatunga a day.

Sitatunga hunting requires a huge amount of preparation and pre-scouting.

Before the start of each safari they must cut papyrus down at least three to four weeks in advance, and a cerebeti (raised platform) is built in either a tree or on floating papyrus.

The decision of when to cut the papyrus and where to build the platforms is achieved by constantly keeping the animals under observation. They are most active at the beginning or  the end of the day, but can also be found eating in the daytime, if they are not disturbed.

A typical hunting day at Sitatunga starts before sunrise where you together with the professional hunter will sit in the platforms until approximately 09:30. Then you can hunt for Nile Bushbuck, Oribi, Duiker, Reedbuck, Waterbuck and Uganda Kob until lunch, and then hunt sitatunga again from late afternoon until sunset. Hunting for sitatunga, surrounded by hippos, crocodiles and abundant bird life in Uganda will provide a unique experience

On arrival at Entebbe airport you will be received by a representative from our partner who will assist with entry formalities. Most flights arrive at night and it is therefore necessary with an overnight stay at a good hotel before heading off the next day go out into the district. 

Stay during the hunt will be either in the traditional East African safari tents or thatched bungalows. Whatever type of accommodation is naturally with private bathroom and three good meals a day.

All trophy fees include a 20% surcharge for anti-poaching projects. In case females or immature males are shot, the trophy fee is doubled.

A deposit for your trophy fees and other expenses is required to be wired 10 days before the start of your safari. The deposit will be credited towards the trophies taken on your safari, and the balance if any is refundable. The balance outstanding is payable at the end of the safari in cash!

Please note that trophy fees can change at any time without notification! Due to quota limitations (especially on Hartebeest, Sitatunga, Topi, Eland, Mountain Reedbuck and Dik-Dik) please be advised, to book your safari well in advance and reserve the species on license you would like to hunt!

Hunting Safaris in Uganda

Hunting Safaris in Uganda are one of the amazing Uganda Safari tour activities that travelers can engage in to be able to join the hunt for wild animals. If you are a lover of sport hunting, then your next safari should be a hunting journey into the wilderness of Uganda. However, hunting is an adventurous safari for the fit adventure lovers who can walk for long distances, plus facing all the fury of the African jungle.

What you have to know about hunting safaris in Uganda

 Hunting in Uganda had stopped for a long period of about 45 years, however it resumed in 2000 in the famous hunting grounds of Karamoja. However, hunting is restricted by concessions which help to mark the extent of the hunting ground.  For example, Karamoja hunting grounds have a concession for approximately 27000 square kilometers. The Karamoja hunting grounds offer you with a good opportunity to real hunting in Africa escorted with the local huntsmen from the Karamojong communities. The hunting expeditions in Uganda also offer you a chance to live in an unscripted adventure in amidst of the wilderness in the pearl of Africa. However, it is better you enjoy your Uganda hunting now before the asphalt discoveries take over the northeastern region of Uganda. The hunting concessions in Uganda are awarded by the Uganda wildlife authority, which takes but 75% of the total trophy fees and gives it to the local communities and about 25% is retained for the local government under the Uganda wildlife authority (UWA). Best hunting season in Uganda

Unlike mountain gorilla trekking and other wildlife safaris in Uganda, hunting safaris in Uganda have no seasons attached to them. There is no best and low seasons for hunting safaris in Uganda, for the reason, you can enjoy hunting in all the hunting grounds with in the wild places of the pearl of Africa. However, during the wet season, also known as the rainy season are the low season, the wildlife tends to be scarce, and some hunters find it really discouraging, especially when the whole day elapses with nothing to show or no trophy, therefore, the rainy season, from March to May and October to November, is sometimes avoided. Despite, the accommodation in the national parks is discounted in the wet season; therefore, joining a hunting expedition during a low season, get you enjoying good cheap accommodation options in almost all the national parks of Uganda .

Where in Uganda do hunting safaris take you?

Uganda has had a number of hunting safaris destinations scattered all through the country, there has been about 12 hunting destinations or grounds in Uganda, however some have been downsized as others, being degazetted. However, the remaining controlled hunting areas include the following;

• Karamoja is found in the northeastern part of Uganda which covers about 68.2% of the whole Karamoja district. Karamoja hunting grounds are divided into 3 major community wildlife areas which include iriri, Karenga, and Amudat community wildlife areas. The concession for the community wild life areas, allows the local people to share the area with the wild animals, and also to carry out other activities like livestock raring, cultivation, among other activities which do not affect the wildlife there of. In the Karamoja hunting areas, you can also enjoy your safari in pian upe game reserve, mantheniko game reserve, and bokora game reserve, among others.
•  The other hunting areas in Uganda include kabowya wildlife reserve, Lake Mburo national aprk, Katonga River, aswa lolim in northern Uganda, ajai wildlife reserve, and other areas round river kafu.

Where to stay while on a Ugandan hunting safari?

 The fact is, there is nothing like cozy safari lodges in Karamoja hunting areas, however, there are facilitates that offer accommodation in permanent chalets. Alternatively, there are tents accommodation options in the wildlife reserves of pian upe and mantheniko among others. You can also carry you own fly camping tents, which you can erect you self. There is also a wildlife authority  camp at moruajore which is a permanent tented accommodation facility an offers good chalets on a raise wooden deck, with ensuite bathrooms, hot and cold water, located in just 2 hours’ drive from the hunting grounds.

What you should know about hunting safaris in Uganda

The major hunting area in Uganda, pian upe game reserve, is a remote area in the north Easter region of Uganda.  pian up game reserve is reached by either road transport or a chartered airplane, which helps to reduce the long distance by road. pian upe game reserve is about 9 hours’ drive from Entebbe international airport , depending on the traffic jam in Kampala .

The fact the pian upe game reserve is located in a very remote area,  the mobile phone network might keep on getting on and off for some few minutes,  but otherwise there is a mobile network and internet coverage in, 2G or 3G. You can also use the use the wifi at your safari camp to your internet work like sharing some photos with friends before leaving Uganda.

A temporary fire arm import permits should be applied for and issued to you before you arrive in  Uganda ; your tour operator can help you run the documents, and then sends you a soft copy on your email in order to be allowed to move with a gun into Uganda. To note, the recommends fire arms include; burnes TSX swift A frame or a Trophy Bear Claw ammunition among others. The animals allowed to be hunted include; buffalo, sedan’s roan, eland, reedbuck, oribi, dik-dik, sitatungas, baboons, warthog, and hartebeests among other.

Where to do Sport Hunting Safari in Uganda

Are you looking for a Uganda destination to do sport hunting from? Well, Uganda has three types of hunting areas that is to say national game reserves, private land and communal hunting areas. The communal hunting areas operate independently just like the private land.

Currently sport hunting in Uganda is not well developed due to limited knowledge of the activity and terrible road transport network to major sport hunting spots.

In most of these hunting areas in Uganda, over 70 percent of proceeds and game meat go back to the community as an approach to sustainable tourism development. The participating hunters may take the horns, hides and skins to commemorate their adventure experience. The general cost for shooting a hyena is $100, a hippo is $1000 and $2000 for a leopard

The Uganda Wildlife Authority is signed a partnership with Aswa-Lolim Wildlife Association and Uganda Wildlife Safaris to restock the animal population in northern Uganda such as antelopes, warthogs, waterbucks, buffaloes and Hartebeest. This has always been done by relocating some from the Murchison Falls National Park.

A partnership was also signed between Uganda government and the Aswa-Lolim Wildlife Association to regulate sport hunting in Amuru area.  Consequently; the organization hired poachers as ranger guides to discourage illegal poaching activities in the protected areas. Please note that only old and weak animals are hunted.

Visitors who plan for sport hunting activities in Uganda must secure a hunting license and permit to import rifles into the country. The Authorities normally charge a conservation fee of about $110 per day and $40 per day as non-hunter fee.

Hunters are allowed to bring two rifles at most in Uganda and the amount of ammunition is not regulated but each airline may have its own policies on firearms, seek detailed information from the airline on the same.  In most cases; sixty rounds of ammunition may be enough for a light rifle while larger rifles may need 20 rounds. Authorities in Uganda do not allow automatic and semi-automatic guns or handguns. More still; Silencers are strictly prohibited. Hunters may also decide not to come with their rifles and opt to hire from the local operators at a cost. We advise you to know the available models before booking for a sport hunting safari in Uganda.

We always advise hunters to arrange their own Travel and Health insurance for just in case of any eventual medical evacuations since sport hunting is partially a dangerous activity.

Besides health insurance, hunters should ensure all their firearms ae insured before travelling to Uganda for sport hunting safari. The application for importing firearms must be made several months in advance to acquire all the necessary documents on your arrival to Uganda.

All permits and licenses must be carried and presented at Entebbe airport to avoid any issues with immigration and customs.

Sport hunting safari in Uganda can be done throughout the year however the best time for the activity is during the dry season of December to February and June to September. During this period, most hunting spots are characterized by golden and dry short grass to locate antelopes and buffaloes.

Wet seasons of March to May are not suitable period for sport hunting because the hunting areas are normally filled with mud, slippery and tall vegetation hence affecting the activity.

Sport hunting is majorly done in the Ssese Islands for Sitatunga hunting, Ajai Wildlife Reserve, East Madi Wildlife Reserve, Kabwoya reserve and Karamoja region.

Sport hunting in Ssese island is done in a group of about 10 escorts who are mainly former poachers with adequate hunting skills and have immense knowledge of hunting “hot” spots.

Hoima has Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve which is also well known for hunting safaris and guests can hunt a number of animals such buffaloes, warthogs, Bush Duikers, bushbucks, oribi, Jackson’s hartebeest and the Uganda Kob.

Sport hunting can further be organized at the Ajai Wildlife Reserve which is entirely managed by Uganda Wildlife Safaris with utmost right for all communal hunting grounds of Monor and Nakasongola.

The Karamoja plains also offer excellent sport hunting grounds in Uganda and the activity is specifically done in areas of Bokara, Matheniko, Pian Upe Wildlife Reserves and Karenga near South Sudan. Main animals hunted in this circuit are the oribis, buffalos, elephants and waterbuck.

Lake Mburo National Park, Amudat, Iriri, Rwengara, Kaiso -Tonya Community Wildlife Area, Karenga Community Wildlife and Lipan Community Wildlife Areas in Kitgum are also major sport hunting destinations in Uganda.

The cost of sport hunting in Uganda is least expensive compared to other destinations in Africa and other continents. If you are planning for this tour, consider the cost of accommodation, meals, transport, trackers and guides. Hunting impalas, elands and impala may cost $800. Zebras cost $600 and most other antelopes fall below $500

What to pack for A sport hunting safari in Uganda?

If you are planning for a memorable hunting safari in Uganda, prepare and pack the following gears to make your trip successful and interesting.

Clothing: Pack T-shirts, sandals, long sleeved shirts, stockings, underwear, belts, caps, sweatshirts, khaki shorts, swimwear, a raincoat, waterproof jackets, hiking boots, hunting waders, and flip flops.

Hunting gear: These include hunting gaiters, flashlights, camera, binoculars, a knife, hunting backpack, ammo belt, insect repellents and leggings.

Travel documents: Pack your personnel documents such as passport, airline tickets, yellow fever vaccination card, documentation for rifle import, any letters of invitation and contacts for next of kin just in case of any emergencies. Tourist visas can either be secured on arrival to the airport of through online application form before travel.

Personal items in nature: These include sunscreen, sun glasses, money, toiletries, cellphones, power adapters, reading glasses, reading books, any medical prescriptions, and chargers.

Non-Hunters/Observers: $300 per day inclusive of $20 Conservation and $20 Concession Fees

Please Note all Safaris exclude one day in and one day out of camp.

There are many different options and combinations available, please let us customise your trip, and to include photo safaris as well.
