Elton John Plays Final Concert of Farewell Tour: “It Will Stay With Me Forever”

Elton John Plays Final Concert of Farewell Tour: “It Will Stay With Me Forever”

Sir Elton John played the final concert of his long-running farewell tour at the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm, Sweden on Saturday night.

John’s final show featured a 23-song career-spanning setlist, including greatest hits “Bennie and the Jets,” “Rocket Man,” “Tiny Dancer,” “Philadelphia Freedom,” as well as a three-song encore of “Cold Heart,” “Your Song,” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.”

“When we set off on my final tour in 2018, I couldn’t have foreseen in my wildest dreams the twists and turns and the highs and lows this tour – and the whole world – would have experienced in the next five years,” John said in a statement following the concert. “And every step of the way, my fans have been there. They have stuck with me, they have supported me, they have been patient, and they have kept turning out for every single last show. Tonight has been magical. I’m trying to process it, and I don’t think it will sink in for a while yet that I’m finally finished touring. I can’t tell you how much I’m going to miss the fans and how much their support has humbled me – it will stay with me forever.”

During the set, Coldplay appeared via live video-link to toast John. “Elton, from all of us here, from all the bands and artists you’ve helped and inspired, we love you so much,” said frontman Chris Martin. “We are so grateful for everything you’ve done for the AIDS Foundation, anytime you’ve been kind to anybody. For everything you’ve done for LGBTQ. Everything you’ve done for fashion and eyewear. Everything you’ve done for sexiness, and love, and dressing gowns! Everything you’ve done for music, everything Bernie has done for lyrics, everything your band has done over the thousands of shows you’ve done. We love you so much, we’re going to miss you so much.”

See photos, video, and the setlist from John’s final night of touring below.

All told, John’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour” spanned more than 300 show (including a headlining set at Glastonbury ), selling 5.7 million tickets and $900 million dollars. While the tour marks John’s final global outing, the 76-year-old musician hasn’t ruled out performing one-off shows in the future.

“It’s really important to make a distinction between Elton retiring from touring but Elton not playing his very last public performance for the very last time,” David Furnish, John’s husband and manager, previously told Billboard . “I know for a fact he will not be touring in any capacity. What you’re going to see is the possibility of a special one-off or a small residency in one venue for a limited period of time.”

Elton John Resumes Yellow Brick Road Tour: Set List and Photos

Elton John  resumed his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour  last night in New Orleans after a nearly two-year hiatus. You can see photos from the concert, as well as the show's set list, below.

The event marked John's first full-scale concert for a live audience since March 7, 2020. At the time, John was in Australia and the Yellow Brick Road Tour had been running since September 2018, but the legendary artist's final trek around the world was postponed due to the pandemic. He was also forced to postpone shows this past fall after suffering a hip injury that required surgery .

Last night's set list included many of John's classic hits, including "Bennie and the Jets" (which opened the show), "Tiny Dancer" and "Rocket Man," but it also featured John's most recent No. 1, " Cold Heart ," from his 2021 album The Lockdown Sessions .

John will continue to tour North America until April — including two dates at New York City's Madison Square Garden — before heading to the U.K. and Europe for a string of shows. A list of John's tour dates can be found on his website .

The 76-year-old singer is due to headline on the Pyramid Stage at Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset on Sunday 25 June. Speaking in an interview, The Rocket Man singer said that the festival was the "crème de la crème" and that he felt a little "intimidated."

Sir Elton John has promised special guests and a different setlist when he performs at Glastonbury in his last-ever UK gig next month, while admitting he feels "intimidated" to be headlining the famous festival.

The 76-year-old singer is due to headline on the Pyramid Stage at Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset, on Sunday 25 June.

On Tuesday, Sir Elton spoke to BBC Radio 2's Scott Mills, sharing details about his upcoming set and describing the coming show as the "crème de la crème."

He said: "I have played festivals, and have really enjoyed them.

"But of course Glastonbury is the crème de la crème.

"To be honest with you, it's the first time I've been asked to play it."

Sir Elton said the festival has come at the "right time" and that it was the perfect way to "sign off".

He continued: "It's just come at the right time. I'm a great believer in serendipity and fate - this is the most wonderful way to sign off in England.

"They've been wonderful. Emily's [Eavis, festival co-organiser] been fantastic."

'I'm a little intimidated'

The artist also admitted that he was "a little intimidated".

"I'm a little, not frightened, but I'm a little intimidated by it because I haven't played there, I haven't been there," he said.

The music legend also said his Glastonbury performance would include surprise guests and a "much different" setlist to the rest of his farewell tour.

Sir Elton was confirmed as the first headliner in December 2022.

At the time of the announcement, Glastonbury co-organiser Ms Eavis said in a statement: "It gives me enormous pleasure to let you know that the one and only Elton John will be making his first ever Glastonbury appearance, headlining the Pyramid Stage on the Sunday night next year.

"This will be the final UK show of Elton's last ever tour, so we will be closing the Festival and marking this huge moment in both of our histories with the mother of all send-offs."

She added: "We are so very happy to finally bring the Rocket Man to Worthy Farm!"

What songs might Sir Elton John play at Glastonbury this year?

Well, it might be hard to predict which songs the legend will play - but here are some of his previous setlists according to Setlist FM.

The singer's 300-plus date worldwide run is due to conclude this summer and will mark his retirement from touring after more than 50 years on the road.

"As the end of my Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour comes into view, there is no more fitting way to say goodbye to my British fans," The Rocket Man singer said, after his Glastonbury announcement.

"They have been beyond brilliant, and have supported me through all the highs and lows of my career."

"Every week I speak to new artists on my radio show and Glastonbury is often cited as a pivotal moment in launching their careers - the festival's genuine, enthusiastic support for the best emerging talent is something I've long admired," he added.

3 Elton John Albums That Stood The Test of Time

by Em Casalena May 11, 2024, 6:00 am

It’s hard to pinpoint which of Elton John ’s albums are the absolute best of his career. It all comes down to personal taste. And realistically, the Rocket Man has never released a truly awful record. Still, there are a few albums that are truly iconic releases from his career that almost everyone can enjoy, even in the new millennium. Let’s take a look at three of Elton John’s albums that stood the test of time!

Videos by American Songwriter

1. goodbye yellow brick road – 1973.

When most people think of Elton John, they think of this 1973 album. It’s packed with most of John’s greatest hits, including “Bennie And The Jets”, “Candle In The Wind”, “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting, and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”.

It’s peak Elton John when he was at his most popular and had become a household name. It’s a very commercial album, but that didn’t stop John from inserting the controversial track “All The Girls Love Alice” which follows the story of a dead teenage lesbian prostitute. Top-tier stuff.

2. Madman Across The Water – 1971

We can’t talk about Elton John’s greatest albums without mentioning that his partner in crime Bernie Taupin wrote the vast majority of his songs. A great example of Taupin’s songwriting prowess is the 1971 hit album Madman Across The Water .

To put it simply, it’s a very strange (but good) album. The opener has some progressive rock leanings and is narrated by a psychopath in an insane asylum. The hit single “Levon” is almost impossible to decipher lyrically. “Tiny Dancer” shines as the major hit from the album, and it’s still a karaoke favorite today.

3. Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy – 1975

Elton John was already riding the waves at the peak of his career when he released Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy . However, he wanted to create a concept album. And he wanted the concept to be the early days of his career.

This 1975 album was a fantastic journey for fans of John, even if it wasn’t the most radio-friendly album of his career. He made no effort to write songs that would become hits, though “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” did climb the charts.

Taylor swift’s ‘cruel summer’ ties as the longest-charting hot 100 hit of her career.

For several weeks now, much of the conversation about Taylor Swift and the music charts in America has been focused on her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department . The full-length has been ruling the Billboard 200 ever since its arrival, while the 31 songs featured on the set have left an incredible impact on the Hot 100—and many of them remain on the tally, even after three weeks.

While millions may be streaming and buying the new tracks from The Tortured Poets Department , one of Swift’s older songs is somehow still charting on the Hot 100. Amidst a slew of new wins, one of her least likely champions has managed to hold on and reach a very special milestone.

“Cruel Summer” is still living on the Hot 100 this frame. The electro-pop smash has now spent a total of 53 weeks somewhere on the tally, matching one of her own previously-set records.

As of this week, “Cruel Summer” is tied as the longest-running Hot 100 hit of Swift’s career. Only one other track from the superstar, “Anti-Hero,” has managed the same feat.

This frame, “Cruel Summer” even manages to climb on the Hot 100, lifting from No. 28 to No. 24. That’s good news for the tune, because if it hadn’t managed a move just like that, it would have disappeared.

Billboard employs what it calls the recurrent rule on the Hot 100. The rule stipulates that once a song has lived on the ranking of the most-consumed tracks in the U.S. for an entire year—52 weeks—it must remain above No. 25. If it falls below that number, it is automatically taken off the chart, and barring a very special set of circumstances, it’s gone for good.

The Best Self Cleaning Litter Boxes Tested For Months

Google chrome gets third emergency update in a week as attacks continue, leak reveals an etf perfect storm could be heading toward bitcoin after $6 trillion fed inflation flip unleashed a crypto price boom.

“Cruel Summer” could become Swift’s longest-charting hit single ever next week, though there’s no guarantee it will be able to hold on any longer. Currently, the smash sits just one rung above that landmark position, which would see the cut vanish. If it can continue to find space above No. 25, it’s fine—but if it doesn’t, that’s the end of its tenure.

Swift debuted “Cruel Summer” on the Hot 100 back in September 2019. It first reached the list when her album Lover was released, and it was a quick, but somewhat minor, hit. After she included it on the setlist for her The Eras Tour, the track became popular again, and it was spun off as a single. In mid-2023, it finally reached No. 1, nearly four years after it was first shared with the world.
