Kenya, with its kaleidoscope of wildlife-rich savannahs, idyllic coastline, scenic Rift Valley lakes and ragged mountaintops, is an endlessly rewarding travel destination. You’ll never be able to experience everything this country of contrasts has to offer in one holiday. However, with local carriers flying between most popular parks and other tourist hot spots, a fly-in safari gives you the opportunity to mix and match some of the country’s spread-out attractions in a limited amount of time. Leaving the hustle and bustle of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital city, and arriving an hour later on a dirt airstrip in the middle of the bush has a dreamlike quality to it. And getting a panoramic bird’s eye view of Kenya’s landscapes is an added bonus.

6 Questions About Kenya Fly-in Safaris

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

flying safaris kenya

What are the main differences between a fly-in and a road safari?

“Whereas you drive between destinations on a road safari, you’ll fly everywhere on a fly-in safari. That is obvious, but there is more to it. On a road safari, you’ll have your vehicle and driver-guide for the duration of the trip. The driver will transfer you between parks, possibly show you attractions along the way, and guide you inside the parks and reserves as well. He or she will be your constant companion on your holiday. If you’ve booked a private tour, your game drives will be private too. You’ll probably have to cover a lot of distance on bumpy roads to get around, but this gives you an opportunity to see more of the countryside and get a feel of what rural Kenya is like away from tourist attractions. On a fly-in safari you’ll travel around in light aircraft. This is a more time-productive way to get around and it cuts out long, sometimes uncomfortable rides by car. When you arrive at a park or reserve, you’ll be met by a local guide from your lodge. The guide will look after you for the duration of your stay. You’ll probably join other people for game drives in open-sided vehicles. These vehicles are superior for wildlife viewing to the usual pop-up-roof 4x4s used on road safaris. You’ll have a different guide in each place. These on-site guides are very knowledgeable and know their parks extremely well. You can do a fly-in safari as an add-on to a road safari. Perhaps fly into Laikipia Plateau or the Masai Mara National Reserve as a treat at the end of a road safari.”

What are the luggage restrictions?

“Safari flights are usually in small light aircrafts, and strict luggage restrictions apply. The standard allowance is 15kg (33lb) per person (inclusive of hand luggage). They also ask you to use a soft bag, such as a duffel bag, which is easier to store in a confined space. You can usually leave excess luggage with your tour operator or city hotel. To accommodate these luggage restrictions, most safari lodges will do same-day laundry and many luxury lodges don’t even charge for this service. Luggage restrictions on safari flights can be problematic for keen photographers carrying a lot of equipment. If in doubt, check with your tour operator in advance. There is always the option to book an extra seat. ”

Are the flights on fly-in trips safe and reliable in Kenya?

“A fly-in safari is very safe. Flight incidents on safaris are almost unheard of. Kenya has a well-established safari industry and most of the airline companies have been operating for many years. Aside from having very strict safety regulations, they are generally very reliable too. Although several carriers offer regular flights to the popular parks and reserves, their schedule is flexible and depends on bookings. Therefore, the exact timing of flights is usually announced the day before departure. The lodges are in direct contact with the airlines and they inform their guests in ample time. They also organize transfers to and from the airstrips.”

Can I take photos from the air on a fly-in safari in Kenya?

“One of the perks of a fly-in safari is the opportunity you get for an aerial view of your destinations and other highlights along the way. You are encouraged to enjoy the flight and take photos during the journey. The formalities on small aircrafts are usually very relaxed and pilots often like to point out landmarks during the flight. When approaching the park, you might see animals on the open plains below or even on the airstrip. Take note, however, that in most cases you’ll have to place your hand luggage at the back of the plane, so make sure you have your camera out before you embark. To minimize glare from the aircraft’s window, keep your lens as close as possible to the glass. ”

Will I get airsick on a fly-in trip?

“Although people usually have a comfortable flight, there is always a chance you’ll suffer from airsickness on a plane. More so in a small aircraft. Some people are more susceptible to it than others. And not all flights are the same: depending on the air movements, you can have a very smooth or rough flight. The flights on a Kenya fly-in safari are usually short (under an hour), which means you’re less likely to feel sick in that time. Or if you do, it won’t be for long. If you know you are prone to motion sickness, there are several things you can do. Avoid flying on an empty stomach. Ideally eat a light meal an hour or so before boarding. Try to get a window seat. Looking out into the distance is recommended, whereas reading a book or looking at a screen will induce nausea. Lastly, if you are really worried about it, you could buy some over-the-counter antinausea drugs. These should be taken half an hour before the flight. ”

What is the cost of a fly-in safari in Kenya?

“A seven-day fly-in safari in Kenya ranges between US$3000 per person and US$7000 per person. While there are many advantages to a fly-in safari, it does come at a higher cost than a road safari. The flights are quite pricey and fly-in packages usually incorporate luxury all-inclusive lodges. So, fly-in safaris in Kenya are usually high-end tours. If budget is less of a concern than time, you should definitely look into it. You might even be positively surprised regarding the price. With several local carriers offering scheduled flights between parks, there is usually no need for chartered flights. Furthermore, competition between different carriers flying to the popular parks has grown in recent years, which has brought down the prices. ”

3 Days Masai Mara flying Safari - Mombasa Tour

3 Days Masai Mara flying Safari - Mombasa

Our 3-day flight safari with Mombasa Air Safari was organized by Brian Kazungu. Everything went well. The transfer from the hotel to the airport, the domestic flights and the Governeurs Camp were a complete success! The tents of the camp are located directly on the river Mara. If you step out of the tent, you can admire hippos and crocodiles in the river. The camp has no fencing, so some warthogs ran through the tents. But occasionally hippos should be on the road at night. But no fear! There are always rangers with guns near the tents. Lunch at the camp is served outdoors. The service and the quality of the food is great! From the table you can see the Masai Mara and of course the animals! Giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs and zebras could be seen relatively close. Dinner is served by candlelight in an open tent. A very nice atmosphere! Coffee and cookies are served at the tent in the morning. Then it goes on morning game drive. We did not have the right breakfast at the camp, but in the wild on the hood of our Jeep. This is not only very adventurous, but also saves a lot of time, so that our Frühpirsch lasted 5 hours in a row! There are animals in huge herds! How many lions we saw, then we did not count! Unfortunately we have not seen a rhino, but 2 leopards. It was just unforgettable hours in the Masai Mara! We can only recommend this tour! Book with Bryan and you will spend wonderful days!

Kenya fly-in safari essentials and information

Must do on a kenya fly in safari.

Kenya is a large nation with a lot to see, so you’ll want to get right to the action! The Masai Mara is most likely the showpiece of this flying route. The Mara is among the greatest places in Africa for an outstanding safari experience.

From its stunning scenery to its dense wildlife, which includes views of the Big Four (Lions, Elephants, Buffalos, and Leopards) from the Big Five.

Large numbers of lions, cheetahs, elephants, rhinos, African buffalo, wildebeest, Giraffe, Zebra and many more animals are found in the park in their natural habitat, unconfined and free to roam the vast wilderness stretching for miles on end.

Visitors may enjoy trips to native Maasai villages and witness a way of living that has stayed unaltered for centuries, in addition to spectacular vistas in the sky and unique perspectives on animals.

Visitors can also include a custom itinerary including other national parks such as the beautiful Tsavo East with some of the largest herds of elephants in Africa residing there as well as Amboseli National Park and the best beaches Kenya has to offer.

Animals viewed on a Kenya fly-in safari?

The terrain of Kenya is just as appealing as the species, and it’s much more stunning from above, but don’t forget your binoculars, as there’s an astounding diversity of wildlife concealed in these arid plains.

A plethora of wildlife congregates around the waterholes, and game drives give several views of lions, wildebeest, giraffe, and zebra from among numerous plains animals. Meanwhile, the game reserves are home to large numbers of elephants, leopards and rhinos.

Also keep a look outside for springbok and oryx, as well as rarer wildlife like the aardwolf. Buffalo, eland, gazelles, impala, and waterbuck were also discovered. Visitors will undoubtedly enjoy viewing these majestic animals in their natural surroundings.

Factors to consider when booking a fly-in safari?

The first things to think about are your finances and the length of time you have allocated for your vacation. Fly-in safaris are ideal for time-pressed vacationers.

It’s also worth considering whether you would like to see more of a region than simply the specific places into which you’ll be traveling. Traveling from region to region provides a more in-depth understanding of a nation, its people, and history than soaring over it.

This is especially true in Kenya, with its magnificent landscape, superb roads, and active local culture as you fly by. If you are prone to travel sickness or are a fearful flier, a fly-in safari may not be the best option for you.

Aircraft used on a Kenya fly-in safari?

The Cessna 210, a highly engineered small airplane with a single engine, is the most preferred for charter flights. It has a great reputation and is a six-seater that can accommodate up to four individuals. Perfect for beautiful flights.

The Baron is a slightly bigger and faster aircraft that is similarly flown by a single pilot but it has two engines. It can accommodate up to five persons.

A Cessna 404 can carry up to eight people. It is the Cessna 210’s elder sibling, with twin engines and two pilots. Ideal for bigger parties that want to fly in the same plane. More room and comfort.

The Cessna Caravan is a superb aircraft that accommodates up to 12 people and one pilot. The ‘4×4’ of small planes, capable of operating from rough airstrips, has a high-winged single turbine aircraft that is great for picturesque aerial photography.

Luggage restrictions on a fly-in safari?

On bush flights, luggage capacity might be quite restricted. The Cessna 206, for example, has just a tiny space under the seats, and bags are frequently squeezed in to fit within. As a general rule, soft duffle bags are preferable over hard-framed suitcases with wheels.

Some providers set quite strict weight limitations and will count your hand bags and even coats in the total. Most employers allow roughly 15kg per person as a general rule. Don’t be startled if an airline inquires about your own weight.

This is frequently done in order to securely balance the smaller aircraft. If you have too much luggage, you may be able to pay for a cargo ticket on safari routes.

What is the average cost for a Kenya fly-in safari?

The average cost for a Kenyan fly-in safari is $2,500 – $4,000 per person for fly-in excursions whilst accommodation and activity add-ons can add to this price.

What are the advantages of a Kenya fly-in safari?

The advantage of a Kenya fly-in safari includes saving a lot of time by avoiding long, bumpy road journeys. You’ll also see another side of this incredible landscape and wildlife which you wouldn’t otherwise see from the ground and enjoy the thrills of descending over the vast savannah.

Are Kenya fly-in safaris safe?

Kenya fly-in safaris are indeed very safe with private charter aircraft well maintained and piloted by professionals with years of flying experience and safety training. Each aircraft typically carries up to 12 individuals whilst larger planes seat 35 – 50 passengers.

Nairobi to Shaba Game Reserve

Nairobi to Shaba Game Reserve

You will be met and transferred to Nairobi’s Wilson airport for your first Cessna Grand Caravan flight, travelling north to the Shaba Game Reserve.

Upon arrival your guide will welcome and transport you from the airstrip to Joy’s Camp where you stay two nights with all meals, drinks and activities included.

After lunch follow in the steps of Joy Adamson and experience the first of many game drives, spotting herds of elephants and buffalos crowding round the natural spring with lions slinking through the tall grass.

Overnight: Joy’s Camp FB

Shaba Game Reserve

Shaba Game Reserve

Spend a day driving across the Shaba Game Reserve, the large natural spring and the Uaso river running through the centre of the reserve attract the parks diverse range of wildlife, from leopards to beisa oryx and gerenuk to aardwolfs.

Shaba National Reserve is a peaceful reserve made famous by Joy Adamson, author of the famous book and film, ‘Born Free’. Shaba, along with Samburu and Buffalo Springs are 3 small, adjoining savannah national reserves that lie on either side of the northern Ewaso Ngiro River. They were established in 1948 as the Samburu Isiolo Game Reserve.

The reserve is a semi desert, but attracts a good range of animals because of the river, which acts as a lifeline, while the combination of the arid desert, volcanic rocks and riverine forests make for a very interesting landscape.

Shaba Reserve has paid tribute to Joy Adamson in the form of a memorial, while her fascinating life is immortalised in the Joy Adamson Museum. Guests are invited to visit the museum as an addition to regular safari activities. There is also the opportunity to learn about the local culture and the Samburu tribe with seasonal village visits.

Shaba Game Reserve to Lake Naivasha

Shaba Game Reserve to Lake Naivasha

Today you will leave to catch your first-class flight to Naivasha, watching the river, mountains and valleys pass by your window on the journey to the private Oserain Wildlife Conservation Area.

Stay at either the Chui Lodge or Kiangazi House for two nights with all meals, drinks and game activities included. In the afternoon enjoy a game drive on the conservation area before dinner and retiring to the opulent African surroundings of your accommodation.

Overnight: Kiangazi House or Chui Lodge FB

Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha

In the morning take a boat ride on the stunning Lake Naivasha, keeping your eyes peeled for colobus monkeys hanging from the passing trees and casually strolling giraffes stopping for a drink.

On returning to the camp for the afternoon relax in front of the panoramic views before taking a game drive in the late afternoon. Enjoying the sunset over the savannah is a superb sight, one not to be missed.

Lake Naivasha to Mara North Conservancy

Lake Naivasha to Mara North Conservancy

Fly on to the last of the three, and probably the most famous, Kenyan game reserves; the Maasai Mara. Here you stay at the Royal Mara lodge for three nights with all meals, drinks and game activities included.

Your afternoon game drive will introduce you to the reserve best known for the migration of the wildebeest and zebra from the Serengeti.

Overnight: Royal Mara Lodge FB

Maasai Mara Game Reserve

Maasai Mara Game Reserve

Today drive through the Masai Mara. While the wildebeest and zebra migration passes through the area July to October, the reserve offers superb game viewing all year round. If you happen to be in the park during the migration season a breath-taking way to experience one of nature’s most powerful displays is from a hot air balloon, for an extra surcharge. An incredible way to see the Kenyan landscape from the point of view of the native peregrine falcon

Maasai Mara

Maasai Mara

Explore the vast wilderness of the beautiful Mara North Conservancy and its collection of animals, birds and rich vegetation across the open savannah; the classic image many people picture when they think of Africa.

The Masai Mara National Reserve in the south western part of Kenya forms part of the greater eco-system that encompasses the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The Masai Mara is named for the Maasai people and the Mara River, which divides it. The wildlife is not confined within the reserve’s boundaries.

There are many conservancies to the north and east of the Masai Mara where, over centuries, an almost symbiotic relationship has developed between the Maasai people and the wildlife. The reserve is famous for its exceptional population of game and the migration of the wildebeest, which occurs here every year in July and August.

The entire area of the park is nestled within the enormous Great Rift Valley. The Masai Mara consists of open savannah, rolling grasslands and undulating hills. The western border is the Esoit Olooloo Escarpment of the Rift Valley, and wildlife tends to be most concentrated here as the swampy ground means that access to water is always good and tourist disruption is minimal. The easternmost border is 224km from Nairobi and hence it is the eastern regions which are most visited.

What’s Cool About the Masai Mara?

If you’ve heard about any safari game park in the world, it was probably the Mara. Known for its many prides of lions, the park also boasts numerous leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, and crocodiles.

This is where you come to see elephants, giraffes, buffalo, rhino, antelope, gazelle – the list goes on – over 95 species of mammals. And hundreds of species of birds over these green rolling hills, dotted with Africa’s beautiful and singular acacia trees.

You’ll want to go down to the Mara River where the wildebeests and zebra cross over during the Great Migration . This spectacular influx of wildlife is unparalleled anywhere in the world and will leave you, as it does us… in awe.

You’ll never run out of sights or activities at the Masai Mara. Take a break from the wildlife and enjoy a cultural moment, visiting with the local Maasai people in one of their nearby villages. You’ll get to meet the people, learn about their lives and perhaps even pick up a beaded souvenir of their hand-crafted work.

Perhaps the most memorable activity in the Mara is an early morning balloon safari over the park. Lift off as the new day breaks over the reserve and float over the landscapes with their wildlife below. A signature moment in your safari!

Nairobi – Masai Mara

2 hour flight.

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

9:00 am   – It’s never too early to head out on safari, so grab your bags for the quick ride to Wilson Airport where you’ll board your Air Kenya or Safari Link flight. We’ll take off at roughly 10:30 am for the scenic journey over homesteads and views of towering Mt. Kilimanjaro in the distance.

In no time we’ll be settling down on the airstrip where your Africa Kenya Safaris guide will be waiting with an open-sided/open-topped 4 x 4 Land Cruiser Jeep. Hop aboard and let’s get this safari started!

You’ll soon be greeted by the sight of rolling hills, dotted with Africa’s signature acacia trees. Look about – there’s wildlife everywhere on these savannahs. The Mara is the richest ecosystem in the region and you’ll soon be tracking for big cats, elephants, giraffes, antelope, and dozens of other species.

Your guide will bring you down to the Mara River, site of the Great Wildebeest Migration . In season you’ll be treated to a scene of thousands of them along with zebras and gazelle making their annual trek into the parklands.

Come evening, you can’t miss the Mara’s dramatic sunset – a heavenly display of color filling the land and sky. You’ll head to your safari lodge or tented camp for a relaxing dinner and time to reflect on this momentous day.

Full Day at Masai Mara

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

The early morning is a serene time in the park, the wildlife edging out from the night’s shelter searching for their first food of the day. You’ll appreciate the soft sunlight over the savannah as you head out on your game drive.

Your guide will discuss different areas of the park you might want to visit depending on the type of wildlife that interests you.

But you won’t want to miss the activity down at the Mara River. We’ll include a packed lunch for you, so settle in and observe the wildebeests and zebra cross-over during the season of the Great Migration (July – October). It’s an awesome display of grazers meeting and fleeing from the predators of the reserve – first crocodiles, then lion, cheetah, and leopard.

During your stay in the park, you can enjoy as many game drives as you please… but you’re free to design your safari as you wish. Want to enjoy some downtime at your accommodation? Just tell your guide – the choice is always yours.

Come late afternoon we may pause for a “sundowner” – a cocktail served out on a grassy spot as you gaze upon the park’s wildlife and rolling hills reaching out to the horizon. We’ll head back to our accommodation on this second night to relax and share the day’s sightings over dinner.

A safari guide in traditional African clothing looking over a plain as the sun sets

It’s often said the ultimate luxury is time. You’re one of the lucky few who get to spend this much time discovering the wonders of this world-famous park.

Talk with your guide about some new areas to explore and perhaps look for wildlife you haven’t yet spotted.

With your extra time, you can take advantage of several optional activities the park has to offer. Your guide will be happy to bring you to a nearby village to meet the local Maasai people. You’ll get a close-up view of their culture, customs, and ceremonies.

For an unforgettable, signature Mara experience, sign-up for the optional hot air balloon safari over the park. You’ll head out before dawn and rise with the sun as the Mara comes to life below. A gentle breeze will move you over the park and you’ll see the wildebeest, zebra, and all manner of wildlife. Then, settling back down upon terra firma, get ready for a royal feast of a breakfast, laid out on long tables, complete with champagne.

Our third and final safari night will be spent relaxing at our safari lodge or tented camp.

Masai Mara – Nairobi

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch & Dinner

By now, you’re an experienced safari-goer and may want to revisit some key sites of the last few days. Just tell your guide if you have any special requests.

You’ve probably spotted lots of big game but have you seen fox, hyena, topi, or eland? The park teems with smaller wildlife which your guide will be delighted to track.

We’ll enjoy breakfast and a final game drive as we head back to the airstrip. No doubt you’ve developed a more sensitive eye for discovering the game all about you.

Your Nairobi flight will lift off at about 11:15 am for the approximately two-hour flight back to Wilson Airport. An Africa Kenya Safaris representative will be there to greet you and bring you back to the location of your choice.

You’ve now experienced the fun of a flight safari and four days at the Masai Mara. We’re certain you’re filled with exciting memories and perhaps photos of your adventure. Want to explore some of our other parks? We at Africa Kenya Safaris will be only too happy to host your next safari exploration. Thank you for your time – it has been our privilege hosting you.

Kenya Flying Safari Tour Itinerary

There is nothing quite like flying above the wildlife between camps and lodges over the wilds of East Africa on our Kenya Flying Safari – Kenya. This tour hits three wondrous and unique areas dedicated to game drives and an authentic experience.

Tour Length: 8 days

Flying between game parks is the quickest (and kindest) way to travel and Amboseli is our first destination. This is a rich and wooded land where huge herds of elephant amble and leopards rest languidly in the treetops. When the clouds are kind, the snow clad peaks of Mt. Kilimanjaro can clearly be seen from the camps.

The safari drum roll reaches a crescendo at the Masai Mara, Kenya’s most spectacular game park. The wildlife is here aplenty: lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, rhino… and daily safaris reward with close-up encounters. Here you can hop aboard a hot air balloon, in the soft hours of dawn, and marvel at the birds-eye view of the rolling savannah.

More time to explore? Consider adding a Tanzania extension , or a thrilling gorilla trek in Rwanda .

Flying Safari – Kenya Tour Itinerary

Day 1  Arrive Nairobi (1 night) A warm welcome and private transfer to the hotel for your first night under African skies.

Day 2-3 Amboseli (2 nights) Two days of game drives at Amboseli, where elephants roam under the shadow of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Track the earth’s largest land mammals including the fierce buffalo, rhino, giraffe, elephant and hippo. After an exciting day on safari, relax in the outdoor boma and savor bush cuisine. As a special treat, the locals will share their celebration of life with authentic dance and song.

Day 4-5 Samburu (2 nights) Wing north to meet the Samburu tribes people and experience exciting safaris in search of unique species. The reticulated giraffe and the delightful little long-necked gerenuk co-exist with lion prides and the elusive cheetah. The unpredictable Ewaso Ng’iro River winds through this dry land and is home to hippo, crocodile and a myriad of birdlife.

Day 6-7 Masai Mara (2 nights) Ready for Kenya’s most famous reserve? Each glorious day begins with the promise of that perfect wildlife photo. Safari vehicles venture into the bush for heart stopping encounters will all the predators and their watchful prey. Convivial evenings are spent with new-found friends, retelling the day’s adventures.

Day 8 Depart Nairobi Fly to Nairobi. Visit the Karen Blixen Museum and Giraffe Center before heading to the international airport in time for your departing flight.

A passion for exploring Africa and all things aviation, coupled with a lifetime of creating, imaginative and responsible, life changing travel experiences, is probably why we are regarded as virtuosos and pioneers of the luxury flying safari, as well as a prime specialist aviation solutions provider for east and southern Africa. Supported by a full range of VIP and concierge services throughout the region, no request is beyond our reach in order to make your journey as exceptional as the destination.

Our journey to becoming a specialist aviation solutions provider started in 2009, with Capt. Torben Rune, Capt. Aslam Khan and Mr. Severin Schultte purchasing an executive Grand Caravan for their own private use. They invited friends and embarked from South Africa on an epic personal flying safari home to Kenya, following a route not often flown, up the east coast of Africa. The fun and breathtaking low flying experience of land, sea and sky were too spectacular not to share. Scenic Air was born with the sole intent of sharing such magical experiences with a wider audience. Twelve years later, we continue to pioneer unique routes, locations, and life changing experiences. Come and join us, and let’s explore together.

Scenic Wilderness

We are extremely proud to announce a new partnership with Lewa based Air Wilderness. On 01st June, we will be launching  a daily shared air charter, return service between Lewa Downs, Laikipia and the Masai Mara.

Simply enter your starting destination and your arrival destination and the calculator will give you a cost estimate for a choice of two types of aircraft, the Cessna 208 executive Grand Caravan and the Cessna 206 Stationair. By viewing and utilising our Cost Calculator, you acknowledge that you have read, agreed to and understand our disclaimer .

I would like to stay at 3 or 4 different spots for 2 to 4 days each for a total of 12 - 15 days. If distances are long, flying from site to site might be preferable. Our primary goal is wildlife viewing. (Not just the big 5, Not just land animals) Birds, insects, plants are all interesting. The only animals we’d go out of our way to see are African Dogs and Hippos. I realize the Selous might be better for these two. The one request from the wife would be a hot air balloon ride. We want a comfy bed, decent food and a room that’s stays cool in midday. No need for glitz and glam. The main requirement is a good guide. Our budget would max out at 1000/p/day + airfare .

Questions and Recommendations

Can I combine the Serengeti in Tanzania + the Mara in Kenya or should I just stick to one country? Why?

I believe the migration is in September, is that correct? Are any other months good for the migration?

Recommendation for an itinerary and Camps / Lodges.

Should I drive or fly between locations?

Recommendation for a reliable tour operator.

Thanks in advance for your practical advice. Since I’m not sure where we’ll go, I’ve posted this in both the Kenya and Tanzania forums.

Hi, yes you are correct September is a good time to witness the migration which will have entered the Mara reserve at that time. It can be very busy with the amount of vehicles in the reserve during that period so it's a good idea to split your time between different parks and adding one of the Mara conservancies to your itinerary will give you a more intimate experience.

I have sent you a private message with some more information and a tour operator recommendation.

Hi Chuck19,

Sounds like an amazing trip you’ve got ahead of you! My two cents.

First, the migration is occurring year around. Depending upon the time of year, they are in different areas, but you simply “google” Great Migration Map, I am sure you can find no shortage of great info. In short, the Migration is in the northern part of the Serengeti + Masai Mara in September timeframe. Note that this is the time of year for the famed River Crossings along the Mara and Talek Rivers. One thing to note is that there’s lots of carnage this time of year along the river front so just be prepared. My favorite time for the migration is around February in the Ndutu area of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Lots of greenery, massive herds, lots of babies (calving season) and the Ndutu area affords you the flexibility to do some off-roading to see the more high profile species up close.

If you are keenly focused on the migration’s River Crossings, I think it’s worth entertaining the idea of visiting both the Serengeti and the Mara. The herds move between the two countries back and forth and large herds will likely be seen from both sides around Sep. If you do both Serengeti + Mara, you are effectively buying yourself insurance to increase your chances of seeing the River Crossings. Northern Serengeti is all National Parks and the river front can get moderately busy. The Mara National Reserve is public area as well and can be very congested with tourists. You can avoid the crowds by heading to the surrounding Private Conservancies, but you will have to enter the Reserve to catch the River Crossings. Mara Reserve is approx. 300,000 acres. Surrounding Private Conservancies add an additional approx. 300,000 acres (areas between the Reserve and Conservancies are unfenced so you get great wildlife density in the private areas).

Driving v. flying: depends on the areas you are looking to combine. Generally speaking, lots of northern Tanzania is driven. But northern Serengeti’s Mara Sector is quite remote so you should definitely fly there (Kogatende or Lamai airstrips). A good TO can advise you on the benefits of flying v. driving dependent upon lodges chosen. I’m a proponent of flying when possible.

I recommend you start your trip in Tanzania as you won’t be required to show proof of Yellow Fever vaccination if you do Tanzania first (you will have to show proof if you enter Tanzania from Kenya). Tanzania is mostly National Parks and can get quite busy this time of year so I suggest you start there for the Migration only and do the rest of your safari in Kenya where access to private land is more abundant and economical.

1 night Arusha upon arrival (lots of options here, but I like Villa Maua for a more economical option)

3 nights northern Serengeti (Nasikia Mobile Migration Camp will work well for your budget)

3 nights Mara North Conservancy (I think Offbeat Mara will work well for you or Elephant Pepper)

3 nights Sosian (also owned by Offbeat) and has good consistent Wild Dog viewing

3 nights Ol Pejeta for northern species and rhinos (Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages will work well here)

I hope this is a good starting point.

Kota Tabuchi – Managing Director: Africa – Travel Beyond

I’m an unabashed and vocal fan of the Mara conservancies, but I think for the OP who is going to the Mara specifically for the migration, I’m not sure I’d recommend staying only there. First, it’s an additional drive to/from wherever in the Reserve the migration activity is, like river crossings, and second with the proposed $200 pppd Reserve fees going into effect, that’s a substantial extra fee on top of a conservancy fee they’d already be paying. I’d recommend time in the Reserve proper for the purposes of easier access to the migration herds and river crossings, and then time in a conservancy to enjoy more “slow safari” with the rest of what the Mara has to offer without the maddening crowds and exorbitant extra costs.

It goes without saying that Mother Nature has no schedule or rule book. The herds may not be where your are and they may not do what you’re hoping to see. The best you can do is plan and hope for the best.

Good call, Amybatt! What do you think about my suggestion of combining the public area/Serengeti NP with a Mara Conservancy? Most camps will include the Mara Reserve fee based on a 3+ night stay and some camps, like Offbeat Mara, are quite close to the Reserve. I think the combination of Serengeti National Park and southern Mara North Conservancy (MNC) will work well, especially with the sequencing of Serengeti -->MNC.

Kota Tabuchi - Managing Director: Africa - Travel Beyond.

What about the Masai Mara Triangle as an option? Quieter than the main reserve I understand.

Could be combined with Tanzania and other places that have been suggested.

Kota, I’ve found that over the last few years camps are moving away from the “one trip into the Reserve for everything 3 nights” to the point where it’s not even suggested. It seems they feel that generally there is more than enough wildlife in the conservancies that there’s no need to go to the Reserve. Kicheche is one, Offbeat is another that charge extra now for that (at least according to their published rates, I haven’t bothered to ask to go when I’m there). I believe even Porini charge extra for that now too.

I personally wouldn’t consider going to Tanzania just for a few days. I shared a vehicle with a couple who did the transfer from the Serengeti to the Mara and I would not bother based on the hassle and length of time it took them. Maybe you have a more efficient way of doing it, but as they described it, it was not something I’d want to do.

You are 100% right about the additional fees for the Mara Reserve with Kicheche and Offbeat. Thanks for keeping me honest!
