Global Entry

Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Members enter the United States by accessing the Global Entry processing technology at selected airports .

At airports, program members proceed to the Global Entry lanes where processing technology will be used to expedite the members by capturing a photo to verify their membership. Once the photo has been captured, the member will receive on-screen instructions and proceed to a CBP officer who will confirm that you have successfully completed the process.

Travelers must be pre-approved for the Global Entry program. All applicants undergo a rigorous background check and in-person interview before enrollment. If a traveler was unable to schedule an interview at an Enrollment Center prior to their international travel, they have an option to complete their interview via Enrollment on Arrival upon their arrival to the United States.

Another upcoming processing technology option for travelers will be the Global Entry Mobile App. This app will enable members to validate their arrival to the U.S. on their iOS or Android device prior to entering the Federal Inspection Services area.

While Global Entry’s goal is to speed travelers through the process, members may still be selected for further examination when entering the United States. Any violation of the program’s terms and conditions will result in the appropriate enforcement action and termination of the traveler’s membership privileges.

How to Check In

Check in up to 24 hours before your flight.

Up to 24 hours before departure, you can check in online. Select “Check In” in the page header or go to My Trips . If you aren’t logged in, enter your confirmation number, SkyMiles number or credit card number to access your itinerary. You can print your boarding pass or get an eBoarding Pass on your mobile device.

Fly Delta App

Make your travel day even easier with the Fly Delta app. After download, check in as a guest, log in or register for a SkyMiles® account. From there, add your trip confirmation number to access your trips. When you’re logged in, you’ll be automatically checked in 24 hours before your flight, and you can use Today Mode to see your boarding pass, baggage tracker and more.

Need to check in at the airport? Already checked in but not ready to go through airport security? Our kiosks are a fast and easy solution. By entering your SkyMiles, confirmation or eTicket number, you can check in for your flight, print your boarding pass, add any checked bags, make a change to your seat, complete a service request and add your frequent flyer number to your profile – all from the touch of your finger.

Need check-in assistance at the airport? Speak with us in-person at any of our Delta Air Lines check-in desks. You’ll see an area clearly labeled for Delta flights, with a special Sky Priority™ boarding lane for Gold, Platinum and Diamond Medallion® Members, and Delta One®, Premium Select and First Class passengers.

Airport Curbside

If you’d prefer to check in as soon as you exit the car, find a Delta curbside desk located at passenger drop-off at most U.S. airports. Here, you can check your baggage directly after you’ve exited your vehicle. If you’re bringing oversized baggage, you may have to bring it inside to an oversized baggage area. There is no fee for using curbside check-in at the airport, but gratuities are always appreciated for outstanding service.

Here's a look into elite status with Europe's largest frequent flyer program.

The Different Ways To Earn Lufthansa Miles & More Points

Miles & More is Europe's largest loyalty program by a few metrics, most notably the number of airlines. Operated by the Lufthansa Group , the frequent flyer program is shared by SWISS , Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, and Lufthansa , as well as LOT Polish and Luxair. Given the massive earning potential, here's a deep dive into the different tiers offered by Miles & More.

One of the major perks of qualifying with Miles & More compared to other programs is that all status lasts for two full years. Moreover, if you qualify higher, you also receive a soft landing to the next lower tier in case you fail to meet the needed requirements. As a Star Alliance member, status levels also give you status with all alliance partners.

Frequent Traveller

The lowest Miles & More status is Frequent Traveller (which matches over to Star Alliance Silver) . But don't think this means only entry-level benefits seen at other carriers. This tier with comes with major perks but isn't easy to achieve either. Until January 1st, 2024, here is what you need to qualify for Frequent Traveller,

• 35,000 status miles in one calendar year; or
• 30 flight segments in one calendar year

You'll hear the term status miles a lot in the program. Status miles are calculated by multiplying the distance flown (in miles) by the percentage of the fare class for intercontinental routes. On European routes, a flat rate applies. For example, London to Frankfurt roundtrip in economy will yield 1,000 status miles and 4,000 status miles in business class. The math is a bit more complicated for intercontinental routes, but full-fare tickets can yield huge miles. Note that award miles are calculated differently and we will touch on that in our next article.

If you managed to achieve either of these requirements, Miles & More has some major perks for the next two years,

• Access to business class lounges of Lufthansa, SWISS, Brussels Airlines, and Austrian when flying with a group airline
• Additional checked luggage
• Access to business class check-in and priority boarding
• 25% status miles bonus
• A physical card and bag tag (a rarity among carriers these days)
• Unlimited miles validity (usually 36 months)

As you can see, Miles & More is one of the few programs offering lounge access at its lowest tier. While it only applies to lounges operated by Lufthansa Group airlines (plus select partners like LOT), it is a good perk if you live or frequently travel through Europe's major hubs like Frankfurt, Zurich, London, or Warsaw.

Miles & More is clearly targeted at high-spending travelers, with Senator status (Star Alliance Gold) requiring 100,000 status miles in one calendar year. For reference, that would mean 25 roundtrips from London to Frankfurt in business class or a dozen or so long-haul international business class flights.

If you manage to achieve this, there are a long list of benefits:

• Access to Lufthansa Senator, all Lufthansa Group, and Star Alliance Gold lounges globally
• Two upgrade vouchers (one voucher provides a one-class upgrade in an award region)
• First class check-in counters and priority boarding
• 25% bonus status miles and 50% more award miles
• 50% discount on companion awards (half the miles needed for a companion flying with you on the same flight, booked at the same time)

The list of benefits is far longer, including some unique ones like the ability to overdraw 50,000 award miles to book redemptions and a free checked golf bag. Safe to say, you'll be well taken care of with Senator status. But that's not where it stops.

Creme de la creme: HON Circle

If you find yourself among some of the busiest passengers in the world, you might hit HON Circle status. It requires 600,000 status miles collected over two calendar years. Intra-European won't cut it for this tier (unless you make 150 trips, roughly one every five days - in business class), you'll need some serious mileage in premium cabins. As expected the benefits don't disappoint,

• First class check-in, boarding, and access to the Lufthansa First Terminal at Frankfurt Airport and first class lounges at SWISS and Austrian.
• Limousine pick up and drop from the terminal and aircraft on all Lufthansa, SWISS, Air Dolomiti, and LOT Polish flights
• Gift Senator status to your spouse or partner
• Six upgrade vouchers
• Plus all the benefits of Senator and Frequent Traveller status

The summary

Miles & More demands a lot from its travelers, but it provides the benefits to back up its earning. If you live in Europe and travel frequently within the continent, Frequent Traveller is an achievable target and will guarantee lounge access at major airports. However, Senator status requires a lot more distance and spending, meaning Star Alliance Gold and global lounge access is out of reach. There are far easier ways to achieve Gold, so choosing Miles & More doesn't make too much sense unless you live at a hub and consistently travel globally.

Frequent Flyer Programs

Frequent flyer programs allow passengers to earn certain travel benefits based on the number of miles that they accrue during the course of their travel on a particular airline or group of airlines.  Typical awards include a free ticket, food and beverage perks, or a free upgrade from economy seating to higher seating class. Some airlines also offer "elite" programs which provide check-in and boarding priorities, and "affinity" credit cards which earn mileage credits when you use them for purchases.

Frequent Flyer Program Membership

To benefit from a frequent flyer program, you must become a member of an airline’s program.  You can typically sign up for a frequent flyer program directly on an airline’s website at no cost.  There is no limit to the number of programs you may join. When choosing among the frequent flyer programs available, here are a few things for you to consider:

• Whether the airline serves the cities you would like to travel to, and whether it has partnerships or agreements with other airlines;  
• Whether the airline has agreements with hotel and car rental companies you would like to use;  
• How quickly (and in what ways) you earn frequent flyer rewards points;  
• How many rewards points are needed for the awards you are interested in;  
• Whether the airline offers free tickets for yourself, "companion tickets," or upgrades;  
• Deadlines for using accumulated credits (in some programs miles expire); and  
• Whether awards are transferable or for the member’s use only.

Each airline’s frequent flyer program includes certain conditions and limitations. You may want to carefully read promotional materials, the contract associated with the rewards program, and the airline’s customer service plan before becoming a member. You also may want to pay close attention to notices that you receive in the mail after you enroll; these notices sometimes describe changes in the airline’s frequent flyer program.

Airline Changes to Frequent Flyer Programs

Airlines have wide discretion to change the terms of their frequent flyer programs, but are required to disclose their frequent flyer program rules in their customer service plan and must adhere to any promises made in their customer service plan.

If I travel using frequent flyer rewards points, is an airline required to offer me the same availability and benefits as a passenger that pays with a credit card, debit card, or cash?

• No. Availability of space on flights for frequent flyers is often limited (similar to deeply discounted air fares). This could include advance reservation requirements, blackout periods (generally during peak travel times, including holidays), and limits on the number of frequent flyer seats on many flights (to as few as zero on some flights). To find out about limitations or conditions of an airline’s frequent flyer program, you may want to carefully review the contract associated with the rewards program.

Filing a Complaint

While the U.S. Department of Transportation does not have rules governing airline frequent flyer programs, DOT has the authority to investigate unfair or deceptive practices in air transportation, including complaints from consumers regarding airlines’ frequent flyer programs.  If you are unsatisfied with the way a frequent flyer program is administered, changes to a frequent flyer program’s terms and conditions, or the basic terms of the agreement, you can submit a complaint directly with the airline.  If the airline is not able to resolve the matter to your satisfaction, you can also file a complaint with the Department of Transportation. Complaints and comments related to those perceived practices may be submitted to the Aviation Consumer Protection Division's  on-line complaint form .  Complaints are reviewed to determine whether an airline is in compliance with federal law enforced by the Department protecting the rights of air travel consumers.  Complaints are also used to track trends or spot areas of concern that serve as the basis for rulemaking, legislation, and research.  DOT’s Office of Aviation Enforcement and Proceedings may pursue enforcement action against an airline that engages in an unfair and deceptive practice relating to a frequent flyer program.

Redeeming miles is not the only way you can benefit with Miles & More. If you travel frequently by air, you will achieve a specific frequent flyer status that you retain for at least one year. Because you not only receive miles whenever you fly with Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS, plus selected partner airlines, you also get Points (Points, Qualifying Points and HON Circle Points) towards achieving frequent flyer status. And that means you also get privileges to make your travels even more enjoyable.

TSA PreCheck - What You Need to Know and How to Apply (2024)

I f you haven’t heard, TSA PreCheck for kids has gotten easier! We’ve been using it now for several years and see the benefit. I’ve certainly noticed the uptick in passengers using the expedited security lines at the airport. We feel it’s been worth the investment for the amount of time we spend at airports.

But what is TSA PreCheck, and how do you get it? And how does it work with minors, especially with the new policy? I’ll answer all your questions on TSA PreCheck for minors in this post. If you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet, here’s what you need to know about TSA PreCheck.

What is TSA PreCheck?

TSA stands for the Transportation Security Administration. TSA PreCheck is a Trusted Traveler program that allows pre-screened individuals to use special security lanes at US airports, called the TSA PreCheck lanes. It’s a must for frequent travelers.

With your 5-year membership, you’ll enjoy the benefit of avoiding regular security lines and getting to your gate faster! That means you don’t have to remove items such as belts, shoes, and light jackets. You can also leave laptops and travel-sized liquids inside carry-on bags.

Where can I enroll for TSA Precheck?

TSA PreCheck isn’t available at every airport, but it is available at 250 U.S. airports and counting. Click here to find a location near you.

How does the TSA application process work?

The process has a couple of steps. To start, you apply on the TSA website using this form . The whole online application process is fairly self-explanatory. Once it’s complete, you’ll be able to schedule an in-person appointment.

Within 45 days of completing your online pre-enrollment form, you’re required to visit an application center (locations can be found here ).

You will need to provide your biographic information including your name, date of birth, and address. You’ll also be fingerprinted and have your photo taken.

What are the necessary documents for TSA PreCheck?

Wondering what to bring to a TSA PreCheck appointment? You can find out about all the required documents needed for TSA PreCheck here . But it’s pretty straightforward:

• Valid ID : Make sure to bring a government-issued ID, such as a passport, or a driver’s license and birth certificate. Double-check the IDs are not expired.
• Appointment Confirmation : Bring the appointment confirmation with you.
• Payment : You’ll need to pay for your TSA PreCheck application during the appointment. This is good for 5 years.
• Proof of Citizenship/Immigration Status : If you’re not a US citizen, you’ll need to bring the necessary documentation to prove your immigration status or a permanent resident.

The non-refundable application processing fee of $78 can be paid through these acceptable forms of payment:

• money order
• certified/cashier’s check

Cash and personal checks aren’t accepted.

What is a KTN?

After completing the application process, successful PreCheck applicants will receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) via US mail in approximately 2-3 weeks.

You may also check the status of your application on the TSA PreCheck website by clicking on “Check My Service Status.”

Once issued, your Known Traveler Number (KTN) is valid for 5 years. You won’t receive a card to carry, but simply a letter with your KTN. Moving forward, you’ll need to provide this number when booking travel reservations.

How to Get TSA Precheck and Global Entry for Free

Several travel credit cards will reimburse your TSA PreCheck fees (and even Global Entry fees). For example, Chase Sapphire Reserve, Delta SkyMiles Platinum American Express Card, and Capital One Venture Card all offer reimbursement via a statement credit for TSA fees.

Now that you have your Known Traveler Number (KTN), what happens next?

When you travel, you’ll want to make sure the airline you’re flying has your KTN in advance. It must be printed on your travel documents. If you belong to a frequent flier program, go on the airline’s website and enter your KTN in their system.

Note that this doesn’t automatically populate every time you book a reservation. So, you’ll want to make sure that it is documented going forward each and every time.

What about TSA Precheck for minors?

So, let’s get to why you’re really here: TSA precheck for kids. It’s pretty straightforward but with a few caveats.

Do children need a TSA PreCheck membership?

Previously, if the whole family wanted to go through TSA PreCheck, those 13 years old and older needed to have their own membership. Thankfully, TSA PreCheck with teens has just gotten easier.

As of May 2023, the TSA PreCheck age has increased to include children of all ages (up to 18 years). That is, as long as they’re accompanied by an eligible parent or guardian. That means your five-year membership applies to all of your kids too!

Just like before, children between 2- and 12-years-old just have to be accompanied by a legal guardian enrolled in the program, no matter what. Kids between 13 and 17 years old just need to be on the same reservation as the accompanying adult.

For teens, just double-check to confirm that the TSA PreCheck indicator shows up on both your boarding pass and your teen’s boarding pass.

This new policy has really streamlined the process since most children don’t have a government photo unless it’s on a passport or a state-issued ID. Our children have passports, so we never had an issue.

Can my child use my TSA PreCheck for international travel?

You can use TSA PreCheck from any participating airlines at over 250 airports across the country, and this includes for international travel.

However, if you’re a frequent traveler abroad, you might want to also consider getting G lobal Entry . You’re eligible if you fly internationally at least 4 times a year. It gives you the benefit of expedited customs when coming back to the US.

As frequent international travelers, we invested in getting each of our kids their own membership, which has a similar policy to TSA Pre-Check.

But what about an unaccompanied minor?

All minors traveling without TSA PreCheck-enrolled parents or guardians will need to apply for themselves.

Can I use my TSA PreCheck membership to take my child to their departure gate?

Let’s say your minor is a first-time traveler and you want to take them all the way to their departure gate. First, you’ll need to pick up a gate pass at the ticket counter when you arrive at the airport. But something to keep in mind is that gate passes cancel out TSA PreCheck benefits.

So, even if you’re a gate pass holder with your own TSA PreCheck membership, you’ll have to go through standard security lines. Your child will be able to go through TSA PreCheck screening, but you’ll still have to go through standard security screening.

Other testers said the padded handles were comfy to hold and easy to steer with and lift. The interior of the bag is also impressive. Although we haven't evaluated this particular model, we have put other bags from Rimowa to the test, and they stood out across the board, ranking highly in our maneuverability, durability and packing tests.

Unlike other suitcases we've tested, this one doesn't have a zipper. Instead, there are two secure, easy-open, TSA-approved locks that lift up to reveal two interior storage compartments. Although seemingly simple inside, each compartment contains a divider panel with adjustable straps that can be tightened to compress your things, and the brand says the compression system can help you fit up to 10 days' worth of belongings. As if all those features aren't enough, each compression panel features a large zippered mesh pocket for more organization.

Unfortunately, Rimowa doesn't offer a trial period, so you can return the suitcase only within the 30-day window, and only if it's unused and in its original packaging. How we test checked luggage

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we regularly test all kinds of luggage — including larger checked luggage — with our specialized lab equipment and by setting up obstacle courses for testers to navigate . We also share our luggage with consumer testers who are able to try the bags out for themselves. Here's how we evaluate checked bags and other luggage:

✔️ Size and weight : We've found that listed specs for luggage aren't always accurate, so we weigh each piece of luggage while it's empty. Then we measure the luggage to see if it complies with dimension restrictions put in place by most U.S. airlines.

✔️ Ease of use : Along with measuring each suitcase, we rate how easy it is to zip and unzip (as pictured) and consider the accessibility of the packing compartments.

We also evaluate important features like the telescopic handle and the wheels. After packing the bag, we practice rolling it over different surfaces, such as tile, carpet and hardwood, and lift it onto countertops to try out the handles.

✔️ Packing capabilities : We pack each suitcase with a standard load of items, including shoes, clothes and toiletries (as pictured), and score the suitcase based on how much it can hold.

✔️ Abrasion resistance: We cut swatches of fabric from softside luggage and load them into our abrasion machine (as pictured), which rubs the material against an abrasive surface 15,000 times. We then assess the material and grade it for signs of wear.

What to look for when shopping for the best checked luggage

Here are some things to keep in mind while searching for the best checked luggage for your needs:

✔️ Wheels : In our evaluations, 360º wheels — called "spinner" wheels — have consistently received the best scores for maneuverability. Larger checked luggage should have four wheels, making it easier to roll, push and pull in all directions.

✔️ Telescopic handle : It may not seem like a huge deal, but a solid, sturdy handle can have a big impact on the performance of your luggage. If you get to examine the luggage in person, we recommend testing how easy it is to raise and lower the handle and checking to see if it can be adjusted to different heights. Consider the comfort of the handle as well, and note if it has a good grip or extra padding. Be sure to use the handle with care because jerking or rough use can cause damage over time.

✔️ Top and side handles : Look for luggage that has easy-to-grip top and side handles, which can be helpful when lifting and lowering bags from higher surfaces.

✔️ Compartments: Most larger hardside checked bags unzip and open into two sections, but softside bags tend to have one large open space for packing your belongings. For more organization, opt for a bag with plenty of compartments, whether they're larger mesh storage spaces, small zippered pockets or exterior pockets for easy access while traveling. Many checked bags will also include a built-in garment bag, toiletry bag and/or laundry bag for even more organization.

✔️ Zippers: Try out the zipper by opening and closing the bag a few times to determine if it's easy to use or if you find it to be finicky and difficult to grip. If possible, also try assessing water resistance by placing a small drop of water on the zipper to see if the water seeps through or beads on the surface.

✔️ Weight: Checked luggage can be pretty heavy, even when empty. Most checked bags, hard and soft, weigh between 10 and 13 pounds, but some weigh upwards of 15 pounds. Most airlines have a 50-pound weight limit for checked luggage with belongings inside, so a heavier suitcase can eat up valuable space you'd normally use for your packing load.

✔️ Returns and warranties: Warranties tend to only cover manufacturer defects, which can be difficult to prove. If you're worried about committing to a piece of luggage, instead of focusing on the warranty, check to see if the brand offers an extended trial period and/or an any-reason return policy. Which is better: hardside or softside luggage?

Choosing either hardside or softside luggage is really up to your personal preference. It's able to resist high-impact drops but is more susceptible to scratches and scuffs. The manufacturer will sometimes add a special coating to prevent scratching.
• ABS plastic: It's a more affordable material to use, so most lower-cost hardside luggage is made with ABS. The material is also super lightweight but not as durable as polycarbonate or metals.
• Polycarbonate/ABS composites : Some suitcases combine polycarbonate and ABS to reap the benefits of both. Typically, there will be a layer of ABS plastic under a coating of polycarbonate. Know that it's not quite as strong as a suitcase made of only polycarbonate.
• Aluminum: Metal suitcases made of aluminum are more durable than other materials, but they're heavy and can be pretty pricey, so it's not as commonly used.

✔️ Softside luggage: Fabric-based suitcases are more malleable than hardside bags, so they can be easier to store in tight spaces or stuff full while you're packing. The material is also less susceptible to scratches and dents, but it's subject to abrasion over time. These materials are often used for softside luggage:

• Nylon : Most softside suitcases are made of nylon, which is a synthetic fiber that's durable and resists wear, and it's fairly water-resistant. It's a great option for frequent fliers who might be rough on their luggage.
• Polyester : Another synthetic fiber, polyester tends to be less expensive than nylon and more lightweight. It's not usually as durable, but we have tested some polyester bags that are abrasion-resistant.

When it comes to major travel gear purchases, a checked bag typically tops the list in regards to both importance and price. It’s a staple for longer trips (anywhere from 10 to 14 days) and for anyone who wants or needs to have more room in their suitcase. And while large luggage tends to be relatively costly, a quality bag should last you for years to come. That said, deciding what is the best checked luggage for you—whether you’re buying your first one or looking to upgrade from an older model—isn’t a decision that should be made lightly. You’ll want to consider a few factors:

• Material : Hard-shell suitcases usually function as clamshells (giving you space to pack on both sides); soft-sided suitcases often have one large compartment and a few exterior pockets.
• Organizational elements: If you're a packing cube devotee, you might not care about extra pockets; overpackers—or anyone traveling with bulky items—will likely want a bag with compression straps.
• Wheel count: Two wheels are better for speed and rough terrain, while four wheels cater to maneuverability. If you go with two wheels, you’ll be pulling your bag from point A to point B; four wheels give you the ability to push or pull, depending on your preference.
• Cost: Checked luggage ranges anywhere from a couple hundred dollars to a couple thousand. A higher price tag can indicate more features and higher-quality materials, but there are occasions when you’re simply paying for the brand name.

To help you narrow down the search, our editors and contributors spent the last year reviewing models from top luggage brands like Away, Calpak, Monos, Tumi, and Béis to determine which ones we recommend most. Read on to discover the best checked luggage to buy right now—all of which have been thoroughly road-tested for their durability, functionality, and capacity.

“For the first time ever as an overpacker, I had room to spare,” says associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny , who traveled with the Béis 26” Check-In Roller on a nine-day trip to Italy this summer. A large part of that spaciousness comes from the hard-sided suitcase’s many compartments and its ability to expand an additional two inches to accommodate more volume. On one side, a U-zip flap and its two zip pockets keep contents securely packed away; the opposite side uses a detachable compression flap with another U-zip pocket and four-point compression straps to provide security and stability. There are also two more pouches—for small valuables and for dirty or wet clothing—which Kenny likens to having “built-in packing cubes.” While Béis says the suitcase can hold up to 99 pounds, it also features a weight limit indicator to ensure you don’t go over any weight limit specifications when flying.

The first thing you’ll notice about the Ambeur Large Luggage from Calpak is its size: The checked bag can carry up to 112L. “An individual traveler could easily get away with packing a week’s worth of clothes and accessories, possibly even two travelers with the right packing skills,” says Lara Kramer , global director of audience development, social, and analytics, who also shared that the suitcase is expandable by two inches, “ensuring you can bring home those extra souvenirs.” Overpackers—or those packing for multiple travelers—will appreciate the spacious main compartments, as well as the three additional zipper compartments that Kramer says are “perfect for packing your smaller or more delicate items.” The Ambeur Large Luggage is a great option if you’re headed abroad for an extended period of time, or if you’re traveling as a family.

Some trips result in more luggage wear and tear than others—international flights, multiple layovers, and cross-country moves, to name a few. If you’re expecting particularly grueling journeys over the next couple of years, invest in the Herschel Heritage Hardshell Medium Luggage. Two European adventures later, the impact-resistant suitcase has “held up very well” for Kenny: Scuffs are minimal, and there were no issues with the zippers or locks. Typically, two wheels are better for navigating cobblestones and less-than-even surfaces, but she noticed that the suitcase’s four inset Hinomoto wheels “rolled easily and quietly” through both the airport and the bumpy streets of Florence .

Away has become known for its minimal yet functional luggage; it’s a reliable go-to for light, spacious suitcases that get the job done. Recently, the brand released upgraded versions of several of its classic bags, including The Medium, which destinations editorial assistant Charlie Hobbs describes as a kind of bag made for “young people on the go.” After bringing The Medium on a trip to Rhode Island and Martha’s Vineyard, he confirmed it held enough clothes for a full two weeks (without doing laundry), and its four 360-degree wheels ensure the luggage is easily maneuverable. The suitcase’s interior features three mesh pockets as well as a small hanging pocket, so you’ll be able to maintain a certain level of organization—even without packing cubes. The only downside of The Medium is the highly scuffable polycarbonate hardshell. Frequent travel, particularly air travel, may result in a less-than-flawless look.

Style meets function in the 70L, four-wheeled Monos Check-in Medium, which comes in seven standard colors and as well as a selection of limited edition patterns and shades. The Aerospace-grade, water-resistant polycarbonate hard shell pairs with the TSA–approved lock for ultimate security, and global digital director Arati Menon had no complaints about the storage space: “One half of the suitcase comes with compression straps and a covered panel with pockets—I use this section for my clothes, and put my shoes into the two pockets. The other section is covered, keeping any other shoes, toiletries, and other sundry items protected and tucked in.” There’s also the added bonus of a removable laundry bag, two shoe bags, and a vegan leather luggage tag. If you’re hunting for a reliable, does-it-all suitcase, this is the one. In Menon’s words, “It feels light, looks great, glides like a dream, and is super functional to boot.”

If you’re interested in a trunk, it means one thing: You’re not planning on traveling light. Hobbs was impressed with the Peugeot Voyages 29" Trunk Wheeled Trunk’s “abundant space,” which he says can hold “a month’s worth of clothing, easily.” When empty, the trunk—including its impact-resistant shell, aluminum frame, two TSA–approved combination locks, and four spinner wheels—weighs 12.3 pounds. Given its size, 50 pounds will come sooner than you think, especially since the two interior compartments (complete with tie straps and zip mesh pockets) are extra roomy. That said, the Peugeot Voyages trunk is great for travelers who have more forgiving luggage weight restrictions, those who are able to haul a heavier suitcase, or those traveling by car.

Tested by senior editor Megan Spurrell on two long-haul trips— Peru and Antarctica —this bag rivals pricier options on this list and will blend in with them, too: “This July number is light, easy to lift, and a spacious interior means I can fit quite a bit inside,” Spurrell says. “It seamlessly pairs with two carry-ons I have, too—both navy blue, from Paravel and Arlo Skye—for a stylish set when I’m traveling heavy on a longer trip.” She notes that the wheels glide smoothly, particularly for a larger bag, and the solid exterior instills hope that it’ll be able to take a number of rough unloadings without any issues. And while the suitcase itself is “simple in design,” she says, the bright colorways (especially the yellow, blush pink, green, and red) are easy to spot at the baggage carousel. Some features, like the handles spanning over 20 different heights, feel nonessential, and the interior material, while spill-resistant, is stiffer and less luxe than pricier picks. The odor-resistant laundry bag and compression pad are welcome perks, though.

At $180, the Quince 24” Check-In Hard Shell Suitcase comes in on the more affordable end of the luggage price spectrum. However, space isn’t sacrificed for cost: “The interiors would hold 10 outfits quite easily in any season, and even more in the summer, when clothing tends to be less bulky,” says Menon. She credits this quality to the compression system on one side of the suitcase “which presses down on your clothes and magically produces extra room just when you think you’re all out of it.” If you’re familiar with more expensive suitcases, you may notice that the polycarbonate shell is relatively lightweight; before any packing occurs, the bag only weighs 8.8 pounds. Considering the price, packing capabilities, and flimsier shell of the Quince checked bag, it makes the most sense for travelers who prefer to travel with a carry-on, but still want to have a large suitcase on hand.

Tumi’s Extended Trip Expandable 4-Wheeled Packing Case is not for everyone, or for quick trips—but there’s no doubt its overall quality and capacious compartments (126L in total) appeal to luxury travelers. Its “smooth-rolling zippers and telescope handle that doesn't stick” stood out to research director Alexandra Sanidad , who used the suitcase on a cross-country trip to help move her son into his college dorm. The soft-sided suitcase is also armed with a removable garment sleeve, a hanger bracket, and a large mesh zip pocket, and three additional zip pockets. All in all, it weighs 17 pounds prior to packing, but there’s enough space to “bring enough clothing for a month without having to wash anything.” The price tag, the highest out of all the luggage we reviewed, should be the deciding factor in purchasing the bag; if you want the Tumi name and are willing to pay nearly $1,400, you’ll have a roomy, well-designed piece of luggage. If your budget doesn’t allow for this type of spending, you’ll be fine with something like the Calpak Ambeur Large Luggage.

First tested while we were on the hunt for the best hard-shell luggage back in 2021, Paravel's Aviator Grand suitcase passed with flying colors. It's a solid, elegantly sleek, eco-friendly suitcase that's great for extended travel. Inside, it's spacious if minimalistic, with two open sides—you'll want to use packing cubes for added organization, though there are two zippered compartments on either side (one of those acts as a compression flap to secure the items underneath). It has since gone on three more international trips; senior commerce editor Madison Flager noted that “for the size of the bag—without an expansion system to add room—it fits quite a bit,” about 10 to 14 days' worth of clothes. While the double spinner wheels have continued to hold up well a few years in, the recycled polycarbonate shell “does scuff easily.” Though with the help of a Magic Eraser , you can polish your bag back up if the marks are bothersome.

Former Traveler editor Meredith Carey used this suitcase when she traveled for a month and had to pack for three weddings with three distinctly different climates in mind. “Roam’s Large Check-In worked perfectly, mainly because its capacity (89 liters, unexpanded), relatively lightweight (10.6 pounds), and thin, flexible polycarbonate shell meant I could pack it to the brim without worrying about putting any baggage handler’s back out.” Inside, the compression system—two free-floating compression boards, each with a large mesh pocket—means that you can compress both sides down. The bag handled travel well, thanks to its sturdy telescopic handle and 360-degree, ball-bearing wheels—plus the grab handles on the top and side made it easy to pull off the carousel. Plus, it’s easy to spot at baggage claim since the brand's color customization means it’s highly unlikely anyone has a matching suitcase.

'Flying feels different': Here's how air travel has changed recently

If you haven't flown in a while, fasten your seatbelts. I've got good news – and bad news.

You've probably already heard the bad news because it travels faster than the speed of sound. Airfares are up. So are luggage fees. And we seem to have a problem with in-flight violence again. 

But there's more to the story, and if you're an occasional air traveler, you'll want to get the big picture. You might be surprised by what you find.

First, the bad news about air travel in 2024

Some of the changes have not been for the better. For example:

• Airfares are climbing. Cheap pandemic airfares are history. Average domestic roundtrip fares fell to a low of $186 in May 2020 . But they were back up to $261 by the beginning of this year – and they continue to climb.
• Checked baggage fees are soaring. All of the major airlines have recently raised their baggage fees. On domestic flights, a checked bag may cost as much as $35 (more if you wait until the last minute or your bag is overweight). 
• Air rage is back. In-flight air rage hit record highs in 2021, mostly because of masking requirements. But the number of violent in-flight incidents remains high – this time, a combination of fuller flights and a continuing decline of civility. We're on track to exceed 2020's unruly passenger incidents.

But don't despair. The air travel experience is changing in small ways – and, potentially, in big ways.

What's it like to fly now?

Let's start with the air travel experience itself. Flights are fuller and space is tighter than ever. In fact, if you're flying somewhere this spring or summer, you should congratulate yourself. You're probably part of the busiest year in the history of air travel.

"Air travel has rebounded," said Jason Block, CEO of WorldVia Travel Group . That puts a squeeze on regular passengers. If you've booked a no-frills economy ticket, you may face a higher risk of being bumped from your flight. So if you have a little extra money, Block suggests buying a more flexible ticket. You're still not bump-proof, but at least you'll move up the list.

▶ Smile for the TSA : The passenger screening experience is different but not necessarily better. The Transportation Security Administration has new scanners that take your picture to verify your identity. New technology might allow you to keep all your belongings in your bag and speed up screening – "might" being the operative word. 

"The process is more inconsistent than ever," said Andy Abramson, a frequent traveler and a communications consultant from Las Vegas. "Procedures change from airport to airport. In some cases, all you need is your boarding pass. In others, you need your ID, and in others, nothing but your facial scan."

Pay less to fly: New strategies for finding cheap airfares now

Speaking of technology, many air travelers have raved about new onboard Wi-Fi capabilities. Airlines like Air New Zealand, Emirates and JetBlue include the price of Wi-Fi in their tickets, and the connections have just gotten better since the pandemic. 

▶ Your face is your boarding pass : The TSA isn't the only one using facial scans. Some U.S. airlines have started using facial scans instead of boarding passes. It's a little bit of an adjustment for passengers. 

"I stood awkwardly in front of a camera, feeling like a contestant in a dystopian game show," said Chris McGuire, a real estate broker from Birmingham, Ala.

A few months ago, Frankfurt became the first airport in Europe to fully adopt facial recognition . Other airports, including Tokyo and Dubai, also have face-scanning technology. If you haven't flown in a while, you may not have to fumble for your boarding pass before you get on the plane. 

I've used face-scanning technology on many occasions, and it usually works, but it can be slow. Getting through customs in Santiago, Chile, took a while and the agent kept apologizing for the technology. So don't forget to pack your patience.

▶ No more ticket change fees : Airline ticket change fees disappeared during the pandemic on U.S. airlines. So if you have to change your flight, you won't have to pay a $250 fee on top of any fare difference.

"That's one of the most significant changes," said frequent air traveler Bob Bacheler, who is the managing director of Flying Angels , a medical transport service. "Airlines introduced more flexible booking and cancellation policies, allowing passengers to change or cancel flights without heavy penalties"

Bacheler thinks the fees will return eventually, and he's right. If they do, airlines will call them something else – maybe a "convenience" fee?

▶ You may board your flight differently : "Some airlines are implementing new boarding procedures," said Andy Palacios, vice president of growth and strategic partnerships for App in the Air . The most significant is United Airlines, which last fall began boarding economy passengers with window seats before those with middle and aisle seats.

Palacios recommends avoiding the general boarding mayhem by getting a credit card or earning elite status. Anything that gets you into the first boarding group can save you from having to gate-check your carry-on or just getting stuck in a crowd.

▶ You have new rights, too : If something goes wrong on your flight, you may find that your airline will do more for you. That's because the Department of Transportation (DOT), which regulates airlines, has been applying steady pressure on domestic airlines to improve customer service. (After all, taxpayers bailed out the airlines during the pandemic.)

Airlines now offer guaranteed meals, accommodations and ground transportation to and from a hotel when they're at fault for a cancellation. (You can find out about all your rights on the DOT's Fly Rights website.)

The government is working on carving out more rights for air travelers, dealing with everything from more straightforward and honest pricing to minimum seat size. But it's a work in progress.

Air travel may be about to get better. Here's what it means for your next flight.

Passengers want to get off the plane first. Here's how you can do it.

Flying 'feels different' now

Passengers say it feels like something has shifted when it comes to air travel.

"Flying feels different," said Robert Khachatryan, a frequent flier and founder of a freight forwarding service in La Crescenta, Calif. 

He's correct. It's not just that customers have a few new rights or that the technology is getting an upgrade – or even that boarding is a little different. 

There's a sense that something big lies just ahead. With people like Elon Musk teasing a Tesla that can fly and personal flying vehicles making headlines almost every day, there's a feeling that flying is about to evolve in a significant way.

Air travelers have become disenchanted with commercial air travel, with its high fares, fees, long lines and terrible customer service. And the relief may not come from new rules to protect the rights of air travelers but from a fundamental change in the way we fly. 

So if flying feels different to you now, just wait. You ain't seen nothing yet.

I've been to 35 all-inclusive resorts. Here are 10 mistakes I always see first-timers make.

• I've stayed at all-inclusive resorts around the world and seen first-timers make the same mistakes. 
• Don't go overboard on the frozen drinks, and never fill your plate during the first pass at a buffet.
• Pack an insulated travel mug and check out water-sport rentals and amenities at sister properties.

Vacationing at an all-inclusive resort is very appealing for many travelers — and with good reason.

Being able to budget before you arrive and not having to worry about toting around cash or credit cards can alleviate a lot of travel headaches.

As a travel writer, I've been to dozens of all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, Mexico, the Maldives, and more. During my stays, I see guests overlook many details that could make their sojourns much more enjoyable.

Whether you're planning your first trip to an all-inclusive resort or this is already your preferred style of vacation, here are 10 mistakes to avoid:

Not researching before booking

Not every all-inclusive resort is designed equally. Some have gorgeous pools and underwhelming beaches, or vice-versa.

Some cater to families with dedicated kids' and teens' clubs and activities, but others prohibit guests under 18. I've stayed at resorts that run the gamut.

The point is that having everything included in and of itself isn't necessarily enough of an appeal. Think about what you're looking for in a vacation, do your research, and look beyond the slick marketing and touched-up, wide-angle pics on the resort's website.

Overlooking VIP and concierge-level room options

The term "all-inclusive" doesn't mean what it used to.

These days, some resorts offer upgraded rooms and suites in certain areas of the property, with perks that may include butler service and dedicated lounges, restaurants, pools, or beach areas for these VIP guests.

Although spending more for these amenities isn't for everyone, they can bring a sense of luxury and civility to your vacation, especially if you're staying at a crowded resort where guests are forced to set out towels before breakfast to claim lounge chairs.

Not making dinner reservations when you check in

You may have access to a slew of restaurants at your resort, but that doesn't mean you can roll up to the host stand and automatically get a table, especially at peak dinner times (remember, everyone wants 7:30 p.m.).

To avoid disappointment, book tables for the popular spots right after you check in or before you arrive, if that's an option.

Keep in mind that depending on how many nights you're staying, you may be entitled to only a limited number of reservations for the à-la-carte concepts, so choose wisely.

My advice is to prioritize places that serve local cuisine. After all, you can get steak or pasta just about anywhere.

Filling your plate at the buffet before checking out all the options

All-inclusive resorts are often known for over-the-top buffets any time of day, with omelet and freshly-pressed-juice stations at breakfast and salad bars, local specialties, carving stations, and all the desserts at lunch and dinner.

Related stories

Grabbing a plate and reaching for the serving spoons before giving the area a look-see is a rookie move and can also lead to overeating and wasting food.

Each time before tackling a buffet, take a walk around, as options can change not only from meal to meal but daily as well. And make it a point to take a spoonful of something you've never tried.

Forgetting to bring an insulated travel mug

I used to roll my eyes at resort guests who'd tote their travel mugs up to the bar to be filled with their beverage of choice.

I thought they were being overly indulgent and exploiting the concept of "all-inclusive." But now I think they're on to something.

For one thing, insulated tumblers keep drinks colder for much longer and reduce the number of trips to the bar.

Beyond that, they're more environmentally friendly than all those single-use plastic cups. If you're bringing your Stanley and asking the bartender to fill it, though, tip them for going above and beyond.

Not tipping

Speaking of tipping, I'm well aware that some all-inclusive resorts invite guests to "leave their wallets at home."

But unless the property you're staying at has a strict policy against it, small tips can go a long way. Tipping the bartender at a crowded swim-up or lobby bar when you first order, for example, can result in quicker service for your second and third rounds.

If you have a fabulous server at dinner, leaving them some cash on the table is a nice gesture. And don't forget about the housekeeping staff, who keep your room free of sand and endlessly replenish your towels.

Ordering drinks wrong

Not all drinks at all-inclusive resorts are created equally.

Belly up to the lobby bar, which tends to stock top-shelf liqueur. Upgrade your piña colada by requesting it with dark or aged rum instead of white, which gives it much more flavor.

If you see Aperol or Campari on the back bar, you can be sure to get a decent spritz. Craft your own low-ABV libation by asking for sauvignon blanc or rosé mixed with club soda and a dash of simple syrup, garnished with a lemon wedge.

And try the local beer or wine, if it's available.

… and going all in on fruity, frozen drinks

A piña colada is decidedly delicious — I like to have one mid-morning, which I half-jokingly refer to as a "breakfast smoothie."

But if you keep hitting the swim-up bar to order blended concoctions, you're going to end up drinking a zillion calories and probably getting a stomachache or killer hangover to boot.

If you're on a quest to keep the buzz going, maybe mix things up a bit with a spirit mixed with soda water or a wine spritzer. And don't forget to hydrate with actual water to counter the effects of all that heat and sunshine.

Not taking advantage of the amenities at sister properties

Some resorts are part of sprawling complexes with several adjacent properties owned and operated by the same parent company.

If your stay includes reciprocity (such as a "stay at one, play at three" policy), you'll have access to other facilities, including additional pools, fitness centers, beach areas, and restaurants.

Making use of them is a great way to avoid boredom and make it seem as if your vacation includes stays at multiple hotels.

Not using the non-motorized water sports

Although Jet Ski, hoverboard, and parasailing rentals can be pricey, using simpler things such as stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, floats, and even Hobie-Cats are often included in the price of an all-inclusive stay.

Yet I often see them lined up on the beach all day, barely being used.

Sign the waiver, don a life jacket, and give them a try. And if you happen to be staying at a place where these water sports are popular, add your name to the waiting list first thing in the morning.

Romania and Bulgaria join Europe’s Schengen travel zone but keep land border checks

Romania and Bulgaria partially joined Europe’s ID-check-free travel zone on Sunday, marking a new step in the two countries’ integration with the European Union.

After years of negotiations to join the Schengen Area , there is now free access for travelers arriving by air or sea from both countries. However, land border checks will remain in place due to opposition primarily from Austria, which has long blocked their bid over illegal migration concerns.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed the change as a “huge success for both countries” and a “historic moment” for what is the world’s largest free travel zone.

The Schengen Area was established in 1985. Before Bulgaria and Romania’s admission, Schengen consisted of 23 of the 27 EU member countries, along with Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Around 3.5 million people cross an internal border each day.

Austria vetoed Romania and Bulgaria’s admission into the Schengen zone at the end of 2022 but allowed Croatia full accession. Bulgaria and Romania joined the EU in 2007 and Croatia in 2013.

Siegfried Muresan, a Romanian member of the European Parliament, told the Associated Press that it is “an important first step” that will benefit millions of travelers annually.

“Bulgaria and Romania have been fulfilling all criteria for joining the Schengen Area for years — we are entitled to join with the terrestrial border as well,” he said, adding that it “will offer additional arguments to the last EU member state that has been vetoing the full accession.”

Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu called it a “well-deserved achievement” for Romania that he said will benefit citizens who can travel more easily and will bolster the economy.

“We have a clear and firmly assumed government plan for full accession to the Schengen Area by the end of the year,” he said.

The EU’s executive branch, the European Commission, has said for more than a decade that Romania and Bulgaria both meet the technical criteria for full accession, which requires unanimous support from their partners. Both countries have agreed to implement random security screening at airports and maritime borders to combat illegal migration and cross-border crime.

“Bulgaria’s full accession to Schengen will happen by the end of 2024,” Kalin Stoyanov, Bulgaria’s interior minister, told reporters on Sunday. “We showed and continue to show to illegal migrants that they should not take the road to Europe through Bulgaria.”

EU countries wrestle with a proposed ban on Russian tourists

Northern European Union countries are calling for a broad ban on tourist visas for Russian citizens, but Germany, among other EU members, demurs.

The lifting of border control is expected to facilitate operations at Bulgaria’s four international airports, which in 2023 saw nearly 11 million passengers, according to official data.

The airport in the capital, Sofia, serves as the biggest hub for Schengen flights, which constitute 70% of all flights, airport representatives said.

While the eased regulations are expected to positively impact the tourism sector, members of the European Parliament have voiced concerns about long queues at the EU’s land borders and the impact it can have on trade in the bloc’s single market, as well as the health and safety of drivers.

Truck drivers are frequently stuck in kilometers-long queues at the borders of both Romania and Bulgaria. The Union of International Carriers in Bulgaria estimates delays cost the sector tens of millions of euros each year.
