Hi Susan, Thank you for your comment. I only write about Holland America and other travel topics. You will need to find a travel agent or call Holland America to have your questions answered. The route to Iceland, Greenland and Newfoundland is offered again, as mentioned in my article. Good luck and have a wonderful cruise adventure! Sherry

WE HAVE TRAVELED WITH HOLLAND AMERICA QUITE A BIT AND YOU ARE ALWAYS OUR FIRST CHOICE. FOR TWO YEARS WE HAVE TRIED TO DO THE ROTTERDAM CRUISE INCLUDING ICELAND, GREENLAND AND NEWFOUNDLAND AND ENDING IN HALIFAX OR BOSTON. THIS WAS CANCELLED ONCE BECAUSE YOU SOLD THE SHIP. I KNOW SO MANY WHO WERE BOOKED ON THE TRIP TWO YEARS IN A ROW…COVID THROUGH THAT FOR A LOOP AS WELL. WILL THERE EVER BE THIS ROUTE OFFERED AGAIN? WE HAVE BEEN MOST PLACES AND THIS IS ONE TRIP TO WHICH WE WERE REALLY LOOKING FORWARD. BEFORE I DO ANY PLANNING FOR 2022, I WANT TO FIND OUT, AS THIS WOULD BE OUR FIRST PRIORITY.

This 13-day Greenland Cruise Is the Best Way to See the 2026 Total Solar Eclipse

The journey will stop on East Greenland's Blosseville Coast on Day 3 to experience the solar sensation.

While all eyes are on this April’s total solar eclipse , which will be visible from much of the United States from Texas to Maine, it’s never too early to plan ahead to best experience the next major total solar eclipse on Aug. 12, 2026, which will be most visible from Greenland, Iceland, and Spain.

Last week, Copenhagen-based Albatros Expeditions announced a special 13-day Greenland Solar Eclipse sailing, departing on Aug. 10, 2026, to coincide with the celestial event. What makes this journey so special is that the company has chosen a specific landing site on the Blosseville Coast in East Greenland to ensure the best possible experience.

“For this important day, Albatros Expeditions have carefully researched the best possible viewing location, a location as close to eclipse center line as possible, with easy Zodiac access, views unobstructed by mountains to the southwest, and likely to have clear skies,” the company describes on its site .

Yuri Choufour/Courtesy of Albatros Expeditions

Around noon local time that day, the ship will drop its anchor, as its expedition team will scout out the area to ensure everyone on board has the best vantage point to witness the two minutes and 17 seconds of totality, which starts at 5:37 p.m.

"As true Greenland experts and seasoned adventure travelers who live and breathe unique experiences in far-flung corners of the globe, we are thrilled for our guests to  experience this once-in-a-lifetime natural phenomenon onboard our Ocean Albatros,” Albatros Expeditions' Hans Lagerweij said in a statement shared with Travel + Leisure .

While the total eclipse will no doubt be the highlight on the third day of the trip, the entire journey will be packed with nonstop spectacles. Departing from Reykjavik in Iceland, the ship sails to Greenland, first stopping at the eclipse observation point, before touring the island, including docking in Tasiilaq, Skjoldungen, Prince Christian Sound, Aappilattoq, Qassiarsuk, Nuuk, Evigheds Fjord, and finally ending in Kangerlussuaq. The company says the route follows the same maritime course that the Norse settlers used more than 1,000 years ago.

Courtesy of Albatros Expeditions

Along the way, guests will enjoy the indulgences of the nine-deck luxury vessel with 94 rooms and suites, each with ocean views and most of them with their own balconies. Also on board are two restaurants, a wellness area, jacuzzis, a pool bar, numerous lounges, and observation areas, including an observation specialty restaurant on Deck 8.

"This voyage offers a unique opportunity  to witness one of Earth’s most incredible natural wonders while exploring everything the world’s largest island has to offer,” Steffan Danino, the company’s product manager, said in the release. “From incredible Arctic nature, to jaw-dropping scenery and welcoming local Inuit culture, this voyage showcases the splendor and majesty of this incredible country. Northern lights cruises: A guide to chasing the aurora borealis at sea

Fran Golden

Witnessing the elusive northern lights flickering across the sky might cause you to gasp because it's actually that cool. The colorful ribbons of green look like something from outer space — and they are. Auroras appear when charged particles collide with Earth's atmosphere.

Seeing the ethereal display, also known as the aurora borealis, is a bucket-list experience for many travelers. Cruise ships can take you to destinations where your chances of catching Mother Nature's special light show are improved.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Remember that seeing this phenomenon doesn't involve a cruise director flipping on a switch. Witnessing the northern lights requires clear and dark skies, late-night viewing hours, enough solar activity for the colors to appear and a big dose of luck. Keep that in mind before you invest all your cruise vacation hopes in this one experience.

Where can I see the northern lights on a cruise?

greenland cruise holland america

The lights are best viewed in the Northern Hemisphere and especially in locations on the so-called auroral oval, a ring zone over the polar regions. In cruising terms, that means prime viewing is in northern Alaska (which is easily accessible on cruisetours), Norway, Iceland, Arctic Canada and parts of Greenland.

Just off the auroral ring is the rest of Alaska. If you are on a cruise in the Inside Passage before April 21 or after Aug. 21 and are willing to be awake in the middle of the night (the lights tend to appear in Alaska after midnight), there's a chance you'll see the aurora borealis.

Cruise lines operating in Alaska — including Holland America , Princess Cruises and UnCruise Adventures — have northern lights sign-up sheets so you don't have to stay up all night, every night, hoping to see the display. Put your name on the list, and you'll receive a wake-up call or knock on your cabin door if there's aurora action. Plan to put on your clothes or bathrobe quickly, as the lights might only appear for a few minutes. (They could also last considerably longer.)

Related: Peak solar activity is forecast for 2024: Here are the best places around the world to see the northern lights

If you're interested in where to see the northern lights outside Alaska, the Arctic city of Alta, Norway, calls itself "The City of Northern Lights."

Alta's credentials include the world's first permanent observatory for viewing the aurora borealis; it was built there in 1899. A whole industry has sprung up around the lights, including such extravagant shore excursions as an overnight in a tent with viewing windows at a Sami dog-sledding camp. Alta is also home to the Northern Lights Cathedral, an architectural landmark.

Tromso is another Norwegian destination known as a hub for aurora borealis viewing. In late January, there's a northern lights arts festival featuring top artists in various musical genres.

Cunard Line and Hurtigruten are among the lines that visit northern Norway in the fall. However, the peak viewing season is from November to March (see below). Viking also visits but in the winter.

Iceland, Greenland and Arctic Canada appear on many expedition ships' itineraries during northern lights season, mostly early in the season in August and September. Lines with ships there include Quark Expeditions, Aurora Expeditions and Lindblad Expeditions.

When can I see the northern lights on a cruise?

greenland cruise holland america

Because of the late-setting and early rising midnight sun, it's way too light during the summer to see the northern lights in the destinations mentioned, but solar activity does take place year-round.

If you have a goal of seeing the aurora borealis in any of the destinations discussed here, you're best off booking as far into the fall as you can find a cruise. Norway is the only prime northern lights destination with winter cruises.

The lights like to appear in the wee hours — particularly between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. — in Alaska. An advantage in Norway is that it's dark enough to see them for a longer period during fall and winter.

Do cruisetours in Alaska improve my chances of seeing the lights?

Cruisetours in Alaska can improve your odds of seeing the aurora because they get you to Fairbanks and other inland destinations in Alaska that tend to have more cloud-free skies than in the Inside Passage, where cruise ships sail.

While you might see the lights from Denali National Park and Preserve during the viewing season, venturing to Fairbanks and points farther north will increase your odds.

Fairbanks tourism folks like to brag that if you visit for at least three nights between Aug. 21 and April 21, your chances of seeing the aurora borealis are more than 90%. (That assumes you are out actively looking during the late evening hours.)

Since your cruisetour might not visit for three nights, consider booking extra hotel nights before or after your cruise. Other things to do in this laid-back city (human population: about 100,000; moose population: 16,000) include riverboat tours, gold panning and yoga with reindeer.

You can also see the lights in Canada's Yukon Territory, including in the gold rush town of Dawson City, which is visited on some Holland America cruisetours.

Should I go on a cruise just to see the northern lights?

Yes, but remember that the phenomenon is dependent on the weather (clear skies required) and hard to predict, despite scientists' best efforts.

Viking has wintertime cruises to Norway from London specifically designed to track the lights in the Norwegian Sea during the peak viewing season — throughout the cruise but especially above the Arctic Circle in Tromso and Alta (where the sailings stop overnight). It's dark in these locales in winter, increasing your chances.

Hurtigruten is so invested in its northern lights experiences that it has hired famed northern lights astronomer Tom Kerss as its "chief aurora chaser." He will serve as an onboard expert, offering talks and workshops for passengers.

The line is so sure you will see the lights on the October-through-March sailings of its year-round 11- and 12-day Norwegian Coastal Express itineraries that the company has a guarantee called the Northern Lights Promise. If the deck's officers don't announce to all on board that the northern lights are happening, you can get a six- or seven-day Norwegian Coastal cruise for free.

Holland America’s Unique 24-Day Cruise to Iceland and Greenland

  • March 25, 2023

Volendam

Holland America Line’s new 2024 Canada & New England season includes a unique 24-day voyage to Iceland and Greenland.

Sailing roundtrip from Boston, the cruise takes place onboard the Volendam and includes a complete circumnavigation of Iceland, in addition to ten visits to Greenland, Maine and Canada’s Nova Scotia, Labrador and Newfoundland.

Sailing on July 27, the itinerary also features six ports of call in Iceland: Isafjord, Akureyri, Seydisfjordur, Djupivogur, Reykjavik and Grundarfjordur.

In Greenland, the destinations set to be visited include Qaqortoq and Nanortalik.

Another highlight of the cruise is a visit to Red Bay, an unusual cruise call in the Labrador Peninsula. In addition to the Volendam, the destination is set to receive only three calls from major cruise lines in 2024.

According to Holland America Line, the 24-day voyage to Iceland and Greenland is part of its “homeport initiative,” which is said to allow guests to “see the world from their doorstep.”

With a total of 29 sailings, Holland America Line’s complete Canada & New England 2024 season will feature two ships.

In addition to the Volendam, the Zuiderdam is also set to offer several departures in the region between April and October.

According to the company, the ships’ different itineraries were designed to “showcase the region’s delicious seafood, deep maritime history, quintessential charm and natural beauty.”

Sailing between Boston, Quebec City and Montreal, the cruises feature visits to several popular ports, including Bar Harbor, Portland, Charlottetown, Sydney, Halifax, Saguenay and more.

New ‘Dutch Day’ on Every Cruise Celebrates Holland America Line’s Heritage with Themed Culinary Experiences

Daelmans Stroopwafel partnership offers a variety of sweet treats, while new special menus and the Orange Party highlight Holland America Line’s rich Dutch history

Seattle, Wash., April 26, 2024 — Holland America Line is introducing a new “Dutch Day” experience that celebrates the cruise line’s more than 150-year-history that began in the Netherlands. Whether sailing in Alaska, Europe, Asia or the Caribbean, many Dutch culinary favorites will be featured on board for the special day.

The centerpiece of Dutch Day will be a themed Dutch Dinner served once per cruise in the main Dining Room, with many of the dishes also offered in the casual Lido Market. Additionally, Holland America Line's popular Orange Party will be held on Dutch Day, and guests can enjoy fresh-made poffertjes in Crow’s Nest Café.  A new partnership with Daelmans Stroopwafel includes delectable desserts featuring the Dutch staple and a Daelmans Stroopwafel turn-down pillow treat in every stateroom.

“Holland America Line remains deeply connected to our roots in the Netherlands, and Dutch Day is the perfect way to honor our history through experiences that celebrate the culinary culture of the country,” said Michael Stendebach, vice president of food, beverage and rooms division for Holland America Line. “Our guests appreciate special touches like Daelmans Stroopwafel for turn down or a dish in the dining room that is distinctly Dutch, and we’re excited to expand the cultural experience for an entire day to showcase more of our heritage.”

Culinary traditions run deep in the Netherlands, and the special themed Dutch Dinner in the Dining Room features an extensive menu that includes both classic and contemporary Dutch delicacies. The selection of starters features a Bay Shrimp Cocktail with Dutch cocktail sauce, Erwten Soep (Dutch Pea Soup), and Mushroom Cream puff pastry with hollandaise sauce.

Dutch-inspired main course selections include Bami Goreng, a stir-fried noodle dish with chicken sate and peanut sauce; Pan-Fried Dover Sole with lemon butter; and Hodge Podge Klapstuk with chateau potatoes. For dessert, a Bosche Bol (large, chocolate covered cream puff), Tompouce (Dutch mille-feuille pastry) or a slice of traditional Dutch Apple Pie provide the perfect sweet ending to the meal.

In collaboration with Daelmans Stroopwafels — a family-owned bakery founded in the Netherlands in 1904, renowned for its authentic recipe —Dutch Day will feature Stroopwafel Cheesecake for dessert on the dinner menu in the Dining Room and Lido Market and a Stroopwafel Napoleon at tea time. Select bars will serve a Stroopwafel Liqueur with hints of cinnamon and caramel only on ships in Europe. Additionally, in place of the traditional stateroom turn-down chocolate, guests will find a Daelmans Stroopwafel waiting for them on their pillow.

New in Crow’s Nest Café on all ships, fresh-made poffertjes — a traditional Dutch treat resembling small, fluffy pancakes — will be available daily (not just on Dutch Day) for a nominal charge.

Popular Orange Party Held on Dutch Day

Once per cruise, Holland America Line holds the Orange Party with live music, cocktails and treats, and now it will be held on Dutch Day. The Orange Party pays homage to the company’s Dutch heritage (orange is the color of the Dutch Royal Family, which hails from the House of Orange), and guests are invited to wear orange attire and accessories. During the after-dinner festivities, special orange-themed cocktails are available while servers pass around finger-foods and sweets.

Dutch Day is part of Holland America Line’s programming that offers authentic experiences to immerse guests in the culture, history and traditions of the places visited on each cruise.

HAL-Holland America's ms Rotterdam sets sail with 100% biofuel for Norwegian Fjord cruises

CruiseMapper logo

HAL-Holland America Line 's flagship MS Rotterdam has embarked on a significant long-term trial utilizing 100% low carbon intensity biofuel during the current Norwegian Fjords voyages. This initiative represents the latest advancement in Carnival Corporation 's ongoing series of biofuel tests, transitioning from biofuel blends to entirely certified biofuel, mirroring similar efforts in the broader commercial maritime sector.

The passenger ship was supplied with biofuel sourced from feedstocks by GoodFuels and provided by FincoEneries before departing Port Rotterdam, Netherlands , on April 27th.

Constructed by Fincantieri and delivered on July 30, 2021, Rotterdam is among the newest vessels in the industry under Holland America's operation.

Previous trials have demonstrated Rotterdam's ability to operate on biofuels seamlessly, without requiring modifications to the engine or fuel system.

In this initial phase of the test, Rotterdam will utilize biofuel in 1 of her 4 engines during cruises this month, achieving an anticipated 86% reduction in life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions. The biofuel will power the ship as it navigates through Norway's picturesque fjords, including Geirangerfjord and Naeroyfjord.

Holland America Line has indicated the potential for expanding the use of biofuel to multiple engines as the trial progresses through the summer months.
