Jaipur's Hawa Mahal: The Complete Guide

The Iconic Palace of the Wind

jaipur tourist places hawa mahal

Jaipur's Hawa Mahal (Wind Palace) is undoubtedly one of the most distinctive monuments in India. It's certainly the most iconic landmark in Jaipur. The building's evocative facade, with all those little windows, never fails to arouse curiosity. This complete guide to the Hawa Mahal will tell you everything you need to know about it and how to visit it.

The Hawa Mahal is located at Badi Chaupar (Big Square), in the walled Old City in Jaipur .

Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan , is four to five hours from Delhi . It's part of India's popular Golden Triangle Tourist Circuit and can easily be reached by rail , road or air.

History and Architecture

Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, who ruled Jaipur from 1778 to 1803, built the Hawa Mahal in 1799 as an extension of the zenana (women's quarters) of the City Palace. The most striking thing about it is its unusual shape, which has been likened to honeycomb from a beehive.

Apparently, the Hawa Mahal has an innumerable 953 jharokhas (windows)! The royal women used to sit behind them to watch the city below without being seen. A cooling breeze flowed through the windows, giving rise to the name "Wind Palace". However, this breeze diminished in 2010, when many of the windows were shut to stop tourists damaging them.

The Hawa Mahal's architecture is a blend of Hindu Rajput and Islamic Mughal styles. The design itself isn't particularly remarkable, as it's similar to that of Mughal palaces with screened lattice sections for women. Architect Lal Chand Ustad took it to a whole new level though, by transforming the concept into a grand landmark structure with five floors.

The facade of the Hawa Mahal is believed to resemble Lord Krishna's crown, as Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh was an ardent devotee. The Hawa Mahal is also said to have been inspired by the Khetri Mahal of Jhunjhunu, in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, built in 1770 by Bhopal Singh. It's regarded as a "wind palace" as well, although it has pillars to facilitate air flow instead of windows and walls.

Although the Hawa Mahal is made out of red and pink sandstone, its exterior was painted pink in 1876, along with the rest of the Old City. Prince Albert of Wales visited Jaipur and Maharaja Ram Singh decided this would be a great way to welcome him, as pink was the color of hospitality. This is how Jaipur became known as the "Pink City". The painting still continues, as the pink coloring is now required to be maintained by law.

What's also interesting, is that the Hawa Mahal is supposedly the world's tallest building without a foundation. It's said to have been constructed with a slight curve to make up for not having this strong base.

How to Visit Jaipur's Hawa Mahal

The Hawa Mahal fronts the main street of the Old City, so you're bound to pass it on your travels. However, it looks most spectacular in the early morning, when the sun's rays amplify its color.

The best spot to admire the Hawa Mahal is at Wind View Cafe, on the rooftop of the building opposite. If you look carefully between the shops, you'll see a small passageway and staircase leading up to it. Enjoy the scene with surprisingly good coffee (the beans are from Italy)!

You don't have to imagine what's on the other side of the Hawa Mahal's facade though. You can actually stand behind its windows, as the royal ladies once did, and engage in some people-watching of your own. Some tourists don't realize it's possible to go in because they don't see an entrance. This is because the Hawa Mahal is a wing of the City Palace. To access it, you'll need to go around the back and approach it from a different street. When facing the Hawa Mahal, walk left to the Badi Chaupar intersection (the first intersection you'll come across), take a right, walk a short distance, and then turn right into the first alleyway. There's a large sign that points to the Hawa Mahal.

The admission price is 50 rupees for Indians and 200 rupees for foreigners. A composite ticket is available for those who are planning to do a lot of sightseeing. It's valid for two days and also includes Amber Fort , Albert Hall, Jantar Mantar, Nahargarh Fort, Vidyadhar Garden, and Sisodia Rani Garden. This ticket costs 300 rupees for Indians and 1,000 rupees for foreigners. Tickets can be purchased online here or at the ticket office at the Hawa Mahal. Audio guides can be hired at the ticket office.

Entry to the Hawa Mahal is free on four days of the year: Rajastha Diwas (30 March), World Heritage Day (18 April), International Museum Day (18 May) and World Tourism Day (27 September).

The Hawa Mahal is open from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. daily. An hour is enough time to visit it and the small museum inside it. You can also drive by the monument at night to see it beautifully illuminated.

What Else to Do Nearby

You'll come across plenty of shops selling the usual tourist fare, such as clothing and textiles, around the Hawa Mahal. However, they tend to be more expensive than elsewhere, so bargain hard if you decide to buy anything. Johari Bazaar, Bapu Bazaar and lesser-known Chandpole Bazaar are better areas to shop for inexpensive jewelry and handicrafts. You can even get a turban!

The Old City, where the Hawa Mahal is located, has a few other popular tourist attractions such as the City Palace (the royal family still lives in part of it). Take this self-guided walking tour of Jaipur's Old City to wander around and explore.

Alternatively, if you want to immerse yourself in the atmospheric Old City, Vedic Walks offers insightful walking tours in the mornings and evenings.

The Surabhi Restaurant and Turban Museum is a unique concept about 10 minutes walk north of the Hawa Mahal. It's housed in an old mansion, and provides a cultural experience for tourists with live music and entertainment.

You can also take a trip down memory lane at the nostalgic old Indian Coffee House, hidden in an alleyway off M.I. Road, near Ajmeri Gate. The Indian Coffee House restaurant chain is the largest in India. It dates way back to the 1930s, when the British set it up to increase coffee consumption and sell their coffee crops. The coffee houses later became legendary hangout places for intellectuals and social activists. Simple but tasty south Indian food is served.

Hawa Mahal – A Full Guide to the Palace of Winds in Jaipur

Welcome to Hawa Mahal, the “Palace of Winds,” a mesmerizing architectural gem nestled in the heart of the walled city of Jaipur, India. This iconic structure, standing tall with its honeycomb of intricately latticed windows, weaves a tale of regal splendor and cultural richness. What is the Hawa Mahal in Jaipur?

The Hawa Mahal, or the “Palace of Winds,” stands as a prominent jewel in the heart of Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. This architectural masterpiece is renowned for its distinctive façade , making it an iconic symbol of the city’s rich heritage.

A Quick Historical Overview

Commissioned in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, the Hawa Mahal was designed by Lal Chand Usta in the form of the crown of Lord Krishna. Its purpose was to provide the women of the royal household a discreet view of the city’s bustling life . The structure’s unique architecture also served to enhance natural ventilation, earning it the moniker “Palace of Winds.”

The Exterior

The Hawa Mahal is most celebrated for its exquisite façade, characterized by intricately latticed windows and balconies. These honeycomb-like structures were designed to allow the royal women to observe street festivals and daily life while remaining concealed. The best vantage point to appreciate this marvel is from the nearby series of cafés that offer a panoramic view of the stunning architectural ensemble.

The Interior

While the exterior is the main draw, the interior of the Hawa Mahal is equally fascinating. The palace is a five-story marvel, with the top three stories constituting the façade. The lower two stories house a museum that showcases artifacts and exhibits from Jaipur’s royal history.

Architectural Splendor

The Hawa Mahal’s architectural splendor is not limited to its façade. The palace boasts a rich blend of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles, featuring domes, floral patterns, and intricate carvings. The palace’s unique design ensures a continuous breeze throughout, creating a cool and pleasant environment.

How to get to Hawa Mahal?

Hawa Mahal is located in the central area of Jaipur, next to the City Palace. It’s one of the most central places in Jaipur, and you’ll probably pass by – or close to it – many times during your stay in Jaipur.

The best and cheapest way to reach it is by tuk tuk. Here is the exact location of Hawa Mahal.

Entrance Fee at Hawa Mahal

A ticket to access Hawa Mahal costs 50 INR ($0.60 USD) per person for Indians and 200 INR ($2.60 USD) per person for foreign tourists.

Composite Ticket:

Hawa Mahal is included in the list of places that you can visit with a “ Tourist Composite Tickets “. Basically, you can get a composite ticket which gives you access to the following monuments in Jaipur:

  • Amber Palace
  • Jantar Mantar
  • Nahargarh Fort
  • Albert Hall
  • Sisodia Garden
  • Vidhyadhar Garden

We recommend getting one, as a composite ticket only costs 400 INR ($4.80 USD) per person for Indians and 1000 INR ($12.00 USD) per person for foreigners.

Hawa Mahal Opening Times

Hawa Mahal is open every day from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

Best Viewpoint of Hawa Mahal

The best vantage point to admire the exterior of the Palace of the Winds is undoubtedly the building located right in front of Hawa Mahal. In this structure, you will find a myriad of cafes, jewelries, and other shops intricately mingled with one another.

This is exactly what the building on the opposite side of the road looks like. Climb the stairs and enter the building to access one of the cafes.

Hawa Mahal Palace of Winds Jaipur Viewpoint

Inside, the whole place is a series of narrow staircases and signs indicating cafes in all directions. It’s not something you would typically expect to find inside an historic building in the central area of a state’s capital city, but we’re in India.

A cafè right next to a tattoo studio which also has a lounge terrace and an adjacent jewelry shop. Welcome to the madness of Jaipur!

Hawa Mahal Palace of Winds Jaipur Viewpoint

We randomly picked a cafe and climbed all the way up, to the very top of the building. You obviously have to order something in order to sit in one of the cafes. Luckily prices – although more expensive than the average – are still quite reasonable. We ordered a fresh orange juice which costed 150 INR ($1.80 USD).

Don’t plan on eating a whole meal here or have a fancy breakfast, it’s not worth it. Instead, grab something fresh to drink, take some photos, and leave!

Visiting Hawa Mahal

Soaring 26m (87 feet) high, the Hawa Mahal stands as a pyramid-shaped architectural marvel, comprising five stories adorned with an astonishing 365 windows!

The primary entrance, known as Anandpoli, welcomes visitors into this splendid structure, while the second entrance goes by the name Chandrapoli.

As you step into the second courtyard, a delightful water fountain graces the space. To the south lies Pratap Mandir, the intimate chamber of the Maharaja, while to the north, the Bhojanshala, or Dining Hall, unfolds its charm.

Connected to the City Palace by a passage, Hawa Mahal serves as a regal gateway for royal ladies to witness the grandeur of Teej, Gangaur, and other processions parading through the bustling main market streets.

Hawa Mahal Palace of Winds Jaipur Inside

You can go up to the top floor and even the big tower on the left, but the higher floors get really crowded, and there’s not much to see or do after a short visit.

Some parts of the palace are not well-maintained, and because there are so many people and not many interesting things to check out, spending a lot of time inside Hawa Mahal may not be the best idea.

The windows of Hawa Mahal

The small, colored windows of Hawa Mahal, also known as “Jharokhas,” are a distinctive feature of this architectural masterpiece. These intricately designed windows serve multiple purposes, reflecting both aesthetic and functional considerations:

Ventilation

The primary purpose of the Jharokhas is to facilitate ventilation within the palace. The lattice-like design allows the free flow of air while providing a degree of privacy to the royal women inside. The strategic placement of these windows captures the breeze and helps cool the interior during hot weather.

Observation

The unique design of the windows allows the ladies of the royal court to observe the activities and events taking place in the streets below without being seen themselves. This was particularly important during the times when the strict purdah system was prevalent, and royal women maintained seclusion from public view.

Natural Light

The colored glass used in the Jharokhas serves as a filter for natural light, creating a soft and diffused ambiance inside. This not only enhances the visual appeal but also contributes to energy efficiency by minimizing the need for artificial lighting.

Tips for Visiting

Visit Early: To avoid large crowds and make the most of your experience, consider visiting Hawa Mahal early in the day when it opens. This allows for a more relaxed exploration.

Visit Duration: Plan to spend about 30 minutes inside the palace. It’s a short visit.

Combine with City Palace: Consider combining your visit to Hawa Mahal with the nearby City Palace. Many tourists explore both attractions in one trip as they are in close proximity. Please note that the City Palace is not included in the same composite ticket as the Hawa Mahal.

View from Café : Make sure to visit the viewpoint in front of the Hawa Mahal for the best view.

Best Timing: Avoid the busiest hours if you want to take decent photos inside the Hawa Mahal.

With a fine honeycomb of latticed windows, the five-storeyed monument lives to its name, which means the palace of wind. Built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, Hawa Mahal was primarily constructed as a summer retreat for the royal household and was also used by the royal ladies to enjoy the lively vibes of Johari Bazaar through the white framed windows, while they themselves stayed hidden from the people on the street. Interestingly, the arrangement of the windows is said to resemble the crown of Lord Krishna. The Palace Of Winds

Hawa mahal, jaipur overview.

The massive edifice of Hawa Mahal stands at the intersection of the main road in Jaipur , Badi Chaupad and was built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in the year 1799. Hawa Mahal derives its name from its unique structure, which is a mesh of small windows that allowed cool wind to enter the palace and hence kept the palace comfortable during the hot summer months. The main reason behind the palace's construction was to allow the women of the royal house to observe the festivities on the streets whilst being unseen from the outside as was the custom of the land. It is located right on the edge of the City Palace Jaipur and extends right to the 'zenana'.

Hawa Mahal is a structure made of red and pink sandstone and has a pyramidal structure which almost resembles a crown. It has been embellished with 953 tiny windows, also known as ' Jharokhas' and embellished with gorgeous latticework. From within, the Hawa Mahal palace is based on five floors each of which has a uniquely decorated chamber. A charming fountain welcomes you inside the main palace, from whereon you can make your way up to the different floors. The top of the palace offers a brilliant view of the City Palace, Jantar Mantar and the ever-busy Siredeori Bazar. There is a small museum as well which holds some rich relics and miniature paintings.

History of the Hawa Mahal

Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, hawa mahal in Jaipur

In 1799, Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh commissioned the construction of Hawa Mahal as an extension of the City Palace. Designed by Lal Chand Ustad, the architectural masterpiece took the form of Krishna’s crown.

During that era, the Rajputs adhered to the Purdah system, which meant that the royal women remained concealed from public view. However, desiring to stay connected with the outside world and witness daily events, the Hawa Mahal was ingeniously crafted with over 900 windows and screened balconies. These architectural elements gave the women a sense of liberation and freedom within its walls.

The architecture of Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal Jaipur, Pink City Jaipur, Top view of hawa mahal jaipur

Hawa Mahal derives its name from its remarkable architectural features, making it one of the most famous places to visit in Rajasthan.

This five-story palace resembles a honeycomb, boasting 953 small windows called jharokhas. These intricately designed windows not only lend to the palace’s unique appearance but also to the functionality of the building where. The windows help facilitate wind flow throughout the palace, keeping it cool during the scorching summers.

Standing at an impressive height of 50 feet above the ground, Hawa Mahal is the world’s tallest foundation-less building. Due to the absence of a foundation, the palace is tilted at an angle of 87 degrees.

Even though the palace is about 50 feet in height, Hawa Mahal has no stairs. Instead, ramps allow one to move between the floors. This is because the palace was constructed for the royal women living there during the time of the Rajputs. However, they were adorned with intricately embellished jewelry and donned elaborate traditional attire, limiting their mobility. Additionally, it allowed the servants to move from floor to floor while they carried supplies for the royal women.

The top three floors of Hawa Mahal consist of rooms that are merely the width of a single chamber, while the first and second floors feature courtyards in front of them. These rooms are adorned with vibrant mosaics, ornamental stonework, and traditional Rajasthani architectural elements known as “chhatris.”

In the section below, I go into further detail about the interior of the Hawa Mahal and its impressive interior.

Exploring the Interior of the Hawa Mahal in Jaipur

Exterior of Hawa Mahal, Hawa Mahal in Jaipur

While the exterior of Hawa Mahal is the first thing that captivates visitors, it is the interior that showcases the ingenuity and brilliance of when the palace was built. With its simplistic and practical designs, the interior allowed for comfortable living in the Palace of Winds in the desert of Rajasthan.

Nevertheless, the interior is adorned with remarkable details and offers breathtaking cityscape views. Additionally, the palace comprises five floors, each showcasing a delightful fusion of Islamic, Mughal, and Rajput architectural styles.

To begin with, as you enter Hawa Mahal, you will pass through a humble-looking gate called Anand Pol, located at the backside facing one of the entrances to Jaipur’s City Palace . Once inside, you will be greeted by a second gate named Chandrapoli, adorned with domed arches intricately carved with depictions of gods and goddesses.

Without further ado, let’s dive into each of the five floors and discuss what each has to offer! Along with fascinating facts and must-see spots within the complex.

Ground Floor of the Hawa Mahal: Sharad Mandir

First floor sharad Mandir Hawa Mahal, Hawa Mahal in Jaipur

As you step through the gates of Hawa Mahal, the captivating Sharad Mandir welcomes you on the palace’s ground floor. With a beautiful courtyard adorned with a central fountain, the ground floor will already have you captivated by the ambiance of a bygone era. The name “Sharad Mandir” is derived from the autumn season, which was a time of joyous celebrations often hosted within this very courtyard.

In addition to the courtyard, there is an archaeological Rajputi museum accessible from the main courtyard. Established in 1983, this museum provides a fascinating insight into the vibrant Rajputi culture. As one of the must-visit museums in Jaipur, It proudly displays a remarkable collection of antiques, ancient weaponry, intricate miniature paintings, swords, and various other historical artifacts.

A little tip for you while exploring the museum and ground floor is to keep an eye out for the exquisitely decorated doors that are hidden away. These hidden gems are a true marvel and should not be missed. Take your time to appreciate their stunning craftsmanship and intricate details.

Second Floor: Ratan Mandir

stained glass floor hawa mahal, Hawa Mahal in jaipur, Ratan Mandir

To ascend to the second floor, reminiscent of royalty, you will have to traverse the ramps as there are no stairs in the palace. The name “Ratan” translates to “gem” in Hindi, and this floor of the Hawa Mahal truly lives up to its name.

Stepping onto the pavilion, you will be greeted by stunning, jewel-like stained glass arches adorning each window. In the morning and throughout the day, you will be able to see the colorful windows cast vibrant rainbows, illuminating the entire interior of the Ratan Mandir.

Additionally, on the second floor, you will see jharokhas, or windows, providing open views of the streets below. A balcony encircles the outer perimeter, allowing you to peer down into the courtyard below and see the sights from a unique perspective.

Third Floor of the Palace of Winds: Vichitra Mandir

The third floor, known as Vichitra Mandir, derives its name from its intriguing qualities. “Vichitra” translates to “unknown” or “weird.” And without knowing the history behind the palace, this may seem like a strange name to some.

However, this floor served as Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh’s private sanctuary, where he could retreat from the pressures of his royal title. Behind closed doors, he would indulge in activities such as composing poems, singing, and worshiping his beloved deity, Lord Krishna.

Although it may not appear particularly peculiar to us today, seclusion and solitude were considered unconventional during that era. Additionally, as this was his personal space, the rooms are much simpler than the other elaborate pavilions or notable sights throughout the structure.

As you ascend higher from here, the passages become steeper, windier, and narrower, presenting more challenging navigation.

Fourth Floor: Prakash Mandir

Fourth floor hawa mahal, Hawa Mahal in Jaipur

Prakash Mandir on the fourth floor of the Hawa Mahal is where you will start to be really impressed! “Prakash” translates to “light,” and as you escape the narrow passages from the floors below, you are greeted by a spacious open-air area bathed in sunlight.

The delightful viewing platforms, though small in size, are adorned with captivating chhatris and dome-shaped pavilions that add to the charm of the palace. Here, you can capture photographs and imagine yourself as a Rajput royalty!

Unveil the little green wooden doors and peek through one of the 953 peep-hole-sized jharokhas. These tiny windows continue to offer glimpses into the lives of the people of Jaipur, just as regal and ethereal as they were centuries ago!

Fifth Floor of the Hawa Mahal: Hawa Mandir

Hawa Mandir - Fifth floor of Hawa Mahal

On the fifth and final floor of the palace, you can indulge in the breathtaking panoramic views of Jaipur. Commonly known as the Hawa Mandir, you can view the city from a small area accommodating around ten or fifteen people at a time. Alongside the captivating views, Hawa Mandir boasts ornate domes adorned with intricate detailing, adding to its beauty.

The name “Hawa” refers to wind, and this floor was aptly named due to the refreshing breezes that prevail up here. From various vantage points, you can marvel at the splendid city vistas on one side while catching glimpses of the enchanting Jantar Mantar, City Palace, and Nahargarh Fort on the other.

Don’t Miss the Sculpture Gallery!

Sculpture Gallery Hawa Mahal in Jaipur

After you exit the main part of the palace where you can go to the top of the Hawa Mahal, you will find an extra exhibit! We had no idea about this portion of the palace and almost missed it.

The sculpture gallery or museum as a few artifacts to see, which are nice and informative. However, the best part is that you can explore more of the palace, by walking on the outer walls that sprawl out along the roads.

Dome in Hawa Mahal

For me, this might have been the best part of the palace, as it was not crowded at all. It also showed some really nice courtyards, as well as intricate domes and seating areas to relax in. It was really nice to take photos with no one else in them, and to explore the area without the noise.

Other tourist destinations close to the Palace of Winds:

There are plenty of other tourist destinations around Hawa Mahal. These include:

  • Govind Devji temple
  • Amer Fort, Nahargarh Fort

Eating at the Palace of Winds

Cafe Menu Hawa Mahal Palace

There are two famous cafes that face the palace and provide amazing views of the architecture. One is the Tattoo Cafe, and the other is Wind View Cafe. Both are elevated above the street and allow you to get a different perspective of the palace.

We visited the Tattoo Cafe for breakfast, and found that it was very expensive. To be honest it was the one thing that we regretted about our trip to the Hawa Mahal, because we ended up spending around INR 800 for two small drinks and a smoothie bowl. Although not super expensive, the price did not match the portion or quality of the food. They also have a minimum order of INR 500 rule at the cafe.

The better option is to forego the cafes out front and just have some snacks at the cafe inside the palace. They have sandwiches, pizza, and other snacks for much cheaper! We saw a lot of locals eating at this cafe – for comparison, we were the only people in the Tattoo Cafe.

Shopping around the Hawa Mahal

Shopping around Hawa Mahal Jaipur

If you still have energy, and looking for some excitement after visiting the palace, there are some great shopping opportunities outside Hawa Mahal! Whereas, just outside, a bustling hub of small shops awaits, offering a wide array of gift items and daily essentials. This vibrant shopping area, known as Badi Chaupal or Manek Chowk, are some of the best places to shop in Jaipur .

Here, you’ll discover a plethora of articles, including traditional clothing, jewelry, showpieces, vases, traditional footwear known as ‘juttis,’ key chains, and various other items. The market also boasts a range of Jaipuri printed dress materials, sarees, jewelry, handicrafts, Rajasthani furniture, and antiques.

As you explore the area, tantalizing aromas waft from street vendors who entice passersby with delectable snacks such as golgappas, bhelpuri, samosas, and kachoris. These culinary delights are a delightful treat for your taste buds.

The Hawa Mahal: A popular tourist destination in Jaipur Rajasthan

Painting on the Dome Walls Hawa Mahal, Back side of the palace, Hawa Mahal in jaipur

The Hawa Mahal, or Palace of Winds, is an absolutely stunning structure that has been attracting tourists for years. With its over 900 windows, one can peer out through them to take in the cityscape below, just as the royal women did centuries ago.

This is by far one of the top things to do in Rajasthan due to its beautiful and unique structure and history. I absolutely loved the Hawa Mahal when I visited, as it was nothing like anything I had seen before. It was built over 200 years ago and is still in amazing shape, which allows you to transport yourself to the Rajput area in Jaipur.

Would you like to preserve your memories in Hawa Mahal for a lifetime? Yes? Then, you should take your camera inside for which you will have to pay an additional Rs 10 for Indians as well as Rs 30 for foreign citizens.

Note that there are four days when the entry to Hawa Mahal is not charged by the authority. And these include World Tourism Day (27 September), Rajasthan Diwas (30 March), World Heritage Day (18 April), and International Museum Day (18 May).

How to Reach the Beautiful Hawa Mahal?

Since Jaipur receives tourists in large numbers throughout the year, initiatives are taken every year to make the city more welcoming and comfortable for tourists, especially through a better transport system.

The roads connecting Hawa Mahal are well-maintained to ensure the best experiences for tourists. Therefore, you can also decide to take a ride to reach this picture-perfect palace.

You can also plan to visit other attractions of Rajasthan before exploring Hawa Mahal. It would be a cakewalk for you to reach the destination from any major attractions in Rajasthan .

The Jaipur International Airport and the Jaipur Junction railway station are two other prime ways to reach the spectacular Hawa Mahal. The palace is merely half an hour of drive from both of these points.

You can take a minibus, tuk-tuk, or taxi to reach Hawa Mahal from the Jaipur Junction railway station. Two types of buses – AC and Non-AC – are available to reach Badi Choupad. You can choose your mode of transportation based on your budget and preferences.

Hawa Mahal Jaipur

Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh built the marvelous structure of the picturesque Hawa Mahal. The founder of Jaipur was the grandfather of Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. The intricate design, marvelous architecture, and interesting stories have made Hawa Mahal a must-visit tourist attraction in Rajasthan.

Did you know the magnificent latticework on Jharokhas (or Rajput-style balconies) was built especially for royal women? They used to observe the day-to-day occurrences and special events from those balconies without catching anyone’s attention.

A journey from the City Palace to the courtyard connecting the Hawa Mahal enables tourists to witness the exquisite Rajput lifestyle.

No trip to India is complete without spending time in Jaipur. Affectionately nicknamed "The Pink City" for the blushing color of its historic buildings, Jaipur is a princely wonderland of culture and heritage.

The best places to visit in Jaipur showcase the royalty of Rajasthan — and you don't have to walk far to see many of the top attractions. Start by touring City Palace , a nearly 300-year-old palace with special courtyards, structures, gardens, and temples.

Just next door is Jantar Mantar, a centuries-old attraction with giant astronomical instruments commissioned by the founder of the city. A 10-minute walk from here brings you to Hawa Mahal , a red-and-pink sandstone structure. Its distinctive lattice design allowed royal women to get a peek at public life while remaining unseen in the 19th century.

Ready to make your trip to "The Paris of India" a memorable experience? Map out your itinerary with our guide to the top attractions and places to visit in Jaipur.

City Palace in Jaipur

City Palace has stood at the heart of the Old City of Jaipur for nearly three centuries, shortly after Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II decided to relocate his court from the city of Amber. Protected by huge guard walls, the fairy-tale-like structure is still the home of the city's modern-day royal family and endures as one of the top places to visit in Jaipur.

City Palace is more than a sand-colored regal abode — it's a sprawling complex of buildings built around a series of landscaped garden courtyards overlooking Jaipur and Lake Palace. The entire property is a stunning display of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture.

The current occupants reside in the most eye-catching building, the Chandra Mahal , an elegant structure with curved eaves and domed rooftops. Each of its seven stories features an entirely different style. The ground floor is included in the price of admission, but you'll need to book a private tour to go upstairs.

Other noteworthy places for sightseeing at City Palace include the Mubarak Mahal (Welcome Palace), which contains displays of dazzling costumes and textiles; the Armoury, a museum-like space dedicated to preserving finely crafted daggers and swords; Pritam Niwas Chowk (Peacock Courtyard), which has mesmerizing doorways painted to look like the feathers of its namesake bird; and Diwan-i-Am (Hall of Public Audience), which showcases the palace's exquisite collection of miniature paintings.

After exploring the palace, check out the Friends of the Museum Bazaar . It has some of Jaipur's highest quality souvenirs (with equally high prices).

Address: Tulsi Marg, Gangori Bazaar, J.D.A. Market, Pink City, Jaipur

Jantar Mantar

At first glance, Jantar Mantar may look to be nothing more than a bunch of larger-than-life abstract sculptures. But this is not an art gallery — this attraction contains a special collection of astronomical tools started by Rajput ruler Jai Singh II to measure the heavens nearly 300 years ago.

Each of the 20 or so structures at this UNESCO World Heritage Site serves a distinctive purpose. The observatory's massive sundial, known as Samrat Yantra , is particularly striking. At 27 meters tall, it casts a huge shadow that accurately measures time down to two seconds.

The elaborate Jai Prakash also tracks the passing of time, using the shadow of a metal plate suspended above a sunken bowl-like structure. The ingenious Rama Yantra, a circular walled structure, can locate the precise positions of celestial objects. Other tools at the observatory can track stars and even predict eclipses.

Hot tip: It's worth hiring a private guide at Jantar Mantar if you want to learn how each of the structures works.

Address: Gangori Bazaar, J.D.A. Market, Pink City, Jaipur

Hawa Mahal

If you had any preconceived notions about how the buildings in Jaipur look, they probably came from Hawa Mahal (Palace of Breeze). A top place to visit in Jaipur, this structure has all of the distinctive architectural features that appear in postcards of the city, from the salmon-pink, honeycombed facade, built to resemble the crown of the Hindu god Krishna, to the geometric accents and rows of tiny windows.

The landmark was built in 1799 to allow royal ladies to watch festivals on the street without being seen by the public. Its 953 windows allow plenty of breezes to pass through, making it an ideal summer palace (and the perfect spot to get relief from Rajasthan's oppressive heat today).

Tourists can learn about the history of the sandstone structure at the palace's small museum — the ceremonial armor collection is particularly interesting. You can also wander the narrow hallways that run throughout the palace. Don't miss the colorful glasswork in windows and doorways, which cast an otherworldly glow on chambers throughout Hawal Mahal.

Address: Hawa Mahal Rd., Badi Choupad, J.D.A. Market, Pink City, Jaipur

Amber Fort

Jaipur is home to one of India's most-visited forts: Amber Fort. Built in the year 1592, the sandstone and marble monolith stands atop a small hill roughly 20 minute's driving distance northeast of the center of Jaipur. This attraction is best known for being a pristine example of Rajasthani architecture.

Getting to Amber Fort typically involves a short uphill hike that's well worth the effort. It's decked out with intricate patterns of inlaid marble in nearly every color of the rainbow. The fort is laid out into four separate sections, each of which has a spectacular garden courtyard outside. While you'd never know it from above, you can actually explore the fort's underground tunnels , some of which have been restored.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site has a fascinating history of legends, betrayals, and romance — but the best way for tourists to hear these stories is to hire a private guide at the Amber Fort.

Address: Devisinghpura, Amer, Jaipur

Albert Hall Museum

When English writer Rudyard Kipling visited the Albert Hall Museum in Jaipur, he wrote that it was a "rebuke to all other museums in India from Calcutta downwards." That's high praise coming from the son of a curator, and fitting for this renowned institution.

The oldest museum in Rajasthan, the Albert Hall Museum boasts an extensive collection of art and historically significant artifacts. Come for the Egyptian mummy ; stay to see antique coins from different periods in India's history, charming permanent exhibits of miniature paintings, 18th-century costumes worn by members of different castes, and a peculiar collection of 19th-century clay figures demonstrating all the yoga poses.

Hot tip: Visit the museum at night, when multicolored lights brighten the exterior of the alluring building.

Address: Museum Road, Ram Niwas Garden, Kailash Puri, Adarsh Nagar, Jaipur

Birla Mandir

In a city that seems to be dipped from top to bottom in pink, the stark white marble Birla Mandir stands out — big time. The Hindu temple pays tribute to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and purity, and Vishnu, one of the religion's main deities. It's one of the best places to visit in Jaipur for tourists and Hindu devotees alike.

The marvelous structure exudes a quiet, peaceful vibe, offering just the right atmosphere to appreciate fine marble carvings, shrines to gods, and gorgeous sunset views. While you don't need more than 30 minutes to get a sense of the space, the experience will prove to be a restorative break from a day of sightseeing.

Address: Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg, Tilak Nagar, Jaipur

Nahargarh Fort

When it comes to sightseeing around Jaipur, the views don't get better than what you'll find at Nahargarh Fort. Also known as Tiger Fort , this nearly 300-year-old attraction overlooks the entire city from atop the Aravalli Hills — a prime location for the structure to defend the city against enemies many years ago.

More than just a formidable barrier though, this fort also contains Madhavendra Bhawan , a summer destination for royalty. The sumptuous Rajasthani building features a dozen identical boudoirs for the queens, which all connect to the king's suite through mural-filled corridors.

Tourists can also explore the fort's wax museum and sculpture park. And if you're feeling hungry, swing by one of the fort's many restaurants to tuck into traditional Indian cuisine.

Address: Krishna Nagar, Brahampuri, Jaipur

Galta Ji

Sources of water can be few and far between in the desert state of Rajasthan. So it's no wonder that when people discovered a natural spring in a mountain pass in the Aravalli Hills , they honored it by building the Hindu temple Galta Ji.

Nestled between cliffs, the temple features a few sacred water tanks, some with modest fountains, as well as frescoes that tell tales about the Hindu god Krishna.

Galta Ji is also one of the best places to visit in Jaipur if you want to see monkeys . It's home to hundreds of macaques and langurs (hence its nickname, "The Monkey Temple"). Daring tourists might opt to buy a handful of peanuts at the gate to tempt the monkeys, but you're better off just watching the rambunctious creatures from a distance.

Indian bracelets with diamonds and jewels

When the founders of the beloved Indian jewelry brand Amrapali Jewels started collecting antique jewelry in the late 1970s, they realized that some of these one-of-a-kind treasures deserved to be preserved and displayed. And so the Amrapali Museum was born, instantly becoming one of the top places to visit in Jaipur.

The jewelry museum in Jaipur features two full floors of glistening jewels and objects from its 4,000-piece collection, showcasing the vast range of Indian craftsmanship.

The displays show just how seriously Rajasthani people take their gold, silver, and precious gems. Among the jewels, you'll see silver bands for horses' legs, a chariot fully covered in silver, embellished shoe covers, and a glorious crown for a groom from Himachal Pradesh.

While these pieces are for display only, there's an extensive range of necklaces, bracelets, and other wearables available for purchase at the Museum Shop.

Address: Ground Floor, K, 14/B, Ashok Marg, Panch Batti, C Scheme, Ashok Nagar, Jaipur

For much of history, Rajasthan's most important handicrafts and works of art lived in private collections that were unavailable for viewing by the majority of the public. That all changed when the Government of Rajasthan opened the Museum of Legacies in 2017.

Housed in a two-centuries-old mansion, this tourist attraction showcases an assortment of Indian embroidery, giant Rajasthani puppets, Pichwai paintings, and much more.

Don't miss the magnificent marble latticework. The amount of swirling detail the artisans were able to carve from such a strong, hard stone is hypnotic.

Address: Kishanpole Bazar Road, Modikhana, Jaipur

Jal Mahal on Man Sagar Lake

One look at the Jal Mahal, and you might think you're seeing a mirage. The graceful palace seems to float atop the twinkling Man Sagar Lake — a calm sight compared to the rest of the frenzied city.

While it appears to have just one story, the Water Palace has four other levels submerged beneath a reservoir. The government no longer allows tourists to visit the site, but you can stroll a pathway around the lake to catch gorgeous views of the attraction. At night, it's lit up in all its glory, casting a golden, glowing reflection on the water.

Rajasthani puppets for sale in Jaipur

Jaipur is a mecca for souvenirs. Markets in the Pink City brim with everything from costume jewelry and precious gemstones to embroidered textiles, cobalt blue pottery, and Rajasthani puppets.

For a no-hassle shopping experience, head to the Rajasthali Handicrafts Emporium across from Ajmeri Gate. The government-run shop sells high-quality traditional handicrafts, like blue pottery decorated with yellow flowers, sets of wooden carvings depicting Rajasthani characters, and hand-printed saris. The prices you see on these items are fixed, so while you won't be able to negotiate a discount, you can also avoid the headache of bargaining.

Johari Bazar is a jewelry lover's paradise. The market glitters from top to bottom with dozens of shops selling everything from costume jewelry to fine silver and gold. No matter your budget, you'll find something beautiful to take home from here.

Finally, don't leave Jaipur without a quick shopping trip to Bapu Bazar. Located just a few blocks southwest of Johari Bazaar, the tourist-favorite market is chock full of handcrafted trinkets, locally made textiles, bedazzled slippers, and souvenirs galore.

Jaigarh Fort

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Amber Fort, Jaigarh Fort is one of the best places to visit in Jaipur if you want a remarkable view and up-close access to historical artifacts. It's best known for housing the Jaivana Cannon, which was considered to be the world's largest cannon on wheels when it was built in the early 18th century.

Visiting the attraction gives tourists an appreciation for the fort's role in keeping Jaipur and the surrounding area safe from invaders. Spread over a range of three kilometers, the fort features thick sandstone walls and a series of subterranean passages. It's thought to be the strongest of Jaipur's forts.

Beyond fortified, though, the fort was also an opulent place when it was in use. You can still see its majestic palace complex and intricate architecture on tours today.

Panna Meena ka Kund

Another one of the popular things to do in Amer after visiting the Amber Fort is taking a 10-minute walk south to visit Panna Meena ka Kund, a stepwell that dates back to the 16th century.

Locals used to come to this spot to fill their pots with water for rituals and household chores. It was also the go-to place to cool off from the intense desert heat.

Today, the attraction's primary purpose is as a backdrop for tourist photos — and for good reason. Its golden yellow hue and labyrinthine steps, which look like they were plucked from one of M.C. Escher's artworks, make for postcard-worthy images . But as tempting as it might be to enter the beautiful attraction for a selfie, Panna Meena ka Kund does not allow visitors to go inside, so keep your photo shoot to the exterior only.

Akshardham Temple in Jaipur at night

Akshardham Temple might look like an ancient site, but don't be fooled — this attraction was built in the 21st century as part of a series of 10 temples dedicated to the Hindu god Narayana (a form of Lord Vishnu).

Still, the 23-acre religious complex is an impressive place to spend the afternoon. The white marble and pink sandstone temple showcases the intricacy of Hindu architecture with its stone carvings of Hindu deities, animals, and scenery. Step inside to see massive pure-gold statues and pristine paintings. There's also a peaceful garden courtyard brimming with lush plants and a musical fountain just outside.

Address: Vidyut Nagar, Vaishali Nagar, Chitrakoot, Jaipur

Elephant Festival in Jaipur

Attending an annual festival is one of the top things to do in Jaipur, and the city's calendar is chock full of events.

In January, you can watch colorful creations fly through the sky during the International Kite Festival and get books signed by famous authors at the Jaipur Literature Festival.

The city hosts its Elephant Festival, during which the tusked animals are painted with Indian motifs and dressed in extravagant costumes, in February or March (depending on the moon cycle). And the two-day Teej Festival, a celebration that honors the union of Shiva and the goddess Parvati, occurs in July or August.

Hawa Mahal, Jaipur

Hawa Mahal

October To March

Sunrise To Sunset

The huge Hawa Mahal is at the intersection of the major road in Jaipur , Badi Chaupad, and was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. The term Hawa Mahal comes from its distinctive construction, which is a mesh of tiny windows that enabled fresh breezes to enter the palace and so kept it cool throughout the hot summer months. The major motivation for building the palace was to allow the women of the royal house to view the festivities on the streets while remaining hidden from the outside, as was customary in the area. It is situated on the outskirts of Jaipur's City Palace and extends all the way to the 'zenana.'

This five-story palace in the style of Lord Krishna's crown, with 953 jharokhas or windows and a finely painted façade like a honeycomb of a beehive, offers one a sense of the Rajput’s' rich past.

Best time to Visit Hawa Mahal

September through February are the best months the visiting the Hawa Mahal. Early morning or late afternoon is the best time to visit Hawa Mahal, in my experience. The colour of the walls in your images will vary depending on the location of the sun. On Fridays, the museum is closed. So, if possible, arrange a vacation on other days to avoid missing out on the museum.

Things to do in Hawa Mahal

The Hawa Mahal's entrance is hidden behind the main facade and can only be reached by walking through a few minor passageways. The main entrance, known as the Anand Pol, faces the City Palace.

The best thing to do in Hawa Mahal is to enjoy the architecture and history of that place. Hawa Mahal is one of the most popular attractions in Jaipur and having visited it personally, I can see why. I know the outside is stunning, but you should also go inside. You never know what you might see.

A number of small stores are located directly outside the palace grounds, where you may purchase a broad range of gift products as well as everyday necessities. This sprawling commercial district, also known as Badi Chaupal or Manek Chowk, is a hub of activity in the city. Traditional apparel, jewelry, showpieces, vases, traditional footwear or 'juttis,' key chains, and many other products are readily available here. You may also buy Jaipuri print clothing materials, sarees, jewelry, handicrafts, Rajasthani furniture, and antiquities here. A variety of street sellers provide fabulously tasty delicacies like as golgappas, bhelpuri, samosas, and kachoris. A café beside the Hawa Mahal provides an excellent view of this architectural masterpiece.

Timings, Entrance Fee and Location of Hawa Mahal

A Five-Storeyed Historic Landmark

Jaipur Hawa Mahal Landscape Image

An iconic landmark of the city, the honeycomb-shaped palace features beautiful jharokhas and windows. This five-storey building has been built without a foundation and is known for its exceptional ventilation, which is also the reason behind its name, Hawa Mahal, which literally translates to ‘Palace of the Winds’. The palace was mainly constructed to enable the ladies of the royal family to see the busy streets from the palace jharokhas.

Suggested Duration - Around one hour

What To Expect?

Dedicated to Lord Krishna, Hawa Mahal’s shape is believed to resemble Shri Krishna's crown. Hawa Mahal showcases a fusion of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles.

  • Visit the palace early in the morning to escape the crowds.
  • Soak in the vibrant Jaipur city life in the adjoining street.

Hawa Mahal, Jaipur Overview

A majestic structure named Hawa Mahal or "Palace of Winds" stands tall at Jaipur in Rajasthan, reflecting an awe-inspiring architectural marvel that has become synonymous with the cultural heritage and history that can be traced back to this region. Constructed by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799 with a finesse that combines both Rajput and Mughal styles, Hawa Mahal has become one prominent landmark that showcases not only magnificent beauty but also impeccable craftsmanship.

The unique feature of Hawa Mahal is its intricate facade, which resembles the honeycomb of a beehive. It stands five stories tall and is made of red and pink sandstone, giving it a distinctive appearance. The palace's main attraction is its numerous small windows, known as "jharokhas," which are beautifully designed with intricate latticework. From its elevated vantage point, the palace treats viewers to sweeping glimpses of Jaipur's colourful markets, grandiose forts, and energetic bazaars, making for an unforgettable experience.

More About Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal is not just a visual delight, but it also holds immense historical significance. Once serving aristocratic women in their pursuit of relaxation or entertainment activities is now serving something more profound, recognition of architectural excellence that portrays what humankind is capable of achieving without question has made Hawa Mahal one popular location visited by people from all corners of our planet Earth.

Adding variety to their itinerary, visitors frequently walk into local businesses revealing unique traditional handicrafts and textiles that can quickly become a keepsake or opulent jewelry unique to Jaipur. Cultural events manifest in and around the palace showcasing music and performances that illustrate authentic culture.

Architecture of Hawa Mahal

A testament to skilled artisanry greets visitors in the form of intricately carved motifs, arches, and ornamentation adorning the palace's exterior. As one enters inside it becomes apparent that no small measure has been taken to make this structure stand out, lavishly decorative flower arrangements and interlocking geometrical shapes together with divine imagery, all evoking awe at their crafting brilliance whilst adding an element of ethereal beauty throughout. The interior spaces are relatively simple compared to the elaborate facade, designed to accommodate the royal ladies who resided in the palace. The chambers are interconnected through narrow staircases and passages, leading to various levels and providing different vantage points to observe the bustling streets of Jaipur.

The architectural design of Hawa Mahal not only serves an aesthetic purpose but also has functional significance. The lattice-worked windows not only allow ventilation but also enable the ladies of the royal household to observe the city's activities and processions while maintaining their privacy.

History Of Hawa Mahal Jaipur

Hawa Mahal Jaipur was built by Rajput ruler, Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, grandson of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh in 1799. He was inspired by the Khetri Mahal of Jhunjhunu and decided to build a Palace similar to it. This five-storey monument was designed by Lal Chand Ustad as an addition to the City Palace starting from the City Palace’s edge and extends till women’s chambers aka Zenana. During that time, the Purdah system was strictly followed and Royal Rajput Women weren’t allowed to show their face to any strangers or appear in public.

In 2006, After 50 years, Hawa Mahal went under renovation at an estimated cost of Rs 4.568 million. The monument is now managed by the Archaeological Department and Government of India.

Architecture Of Hawa Mahal Jaipur

The front elevation of Hawa Mahal from the street looks like a honeycomb with small portholes. Each porthole has small windows and carved sandstone grills, finials and domes, giving it an appearance of a mass of semi-octagonal bays. Hawa Mahal is built in the shape of Krishna’s crown as it is believed that Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh was a great devotee of Lord Krishna.

Hawa Mahal comprises 953 ‘Jhalokas’ or windows with small lattice-worked pink windows, balconies and arched roofs with hanging cornices. These windows allow royal women to observe day to day activities happening on the street below without appearing in public. These windows also allow cool breeze to pass through the Palace, maintaining a cool and well-ventilated atmosphere during summer months. These cooling effects are enhanced by the fountains at the centre of each chamber.

The attractive aspect of Hawa Mahal is hanging cornices and you can see domed canopies, fluted pillars, lotus and floral patterns in Rajput style and stone inlay filigree work and arches in Islamic style. The interior of the Palace is not as fancy as its exterior. Unlike the lower two floors, the top three floors do not have a width of one room. The top three storeys of Hawa Mahal are single room, Vichitra Mandir, Prakash Mandir and Hawa Mandir. The first floor of Hawa Mahal is Sharad Mandir. The Maharaja used to worship God Krishna at the Vichitra Mandir, while the Prakash Mandir provides an open terrace to both sides.

Hawa Mahal Jaipur is the tallest building in the world without foundation with a height of 50 feet. Due to this, the palace is tilted at an angle of 87 degrees. There are no stairs inside the building because it was easier to carry Royal Rajput Ladies on ramps than stairs. It is the reason there are ramps to reach at the top of Hawa Mahal. Hawa Mahal also has an Archaeological Museum. In order to enter the Palace, you need to go through an Royal door which is situated towards the left of the building.

Hawa Mahal to Nahargarh Fort: Best Places to Visit in Jaipur

The Pink City of Jaipur: A Kaleidoscope of Color and Royalty

From imposing forts nestled in the Aravalli Hills to vibrant bazaars bursting with color and craftsmanship, Rajasthan's capital Jaipur offers visitors an intoxicating immersion into India's rich history and culture. Built in the 18th century by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, Jaipur continues to showcase a remarkable harmony between the ancient and the modern.

Get ready to feast for the senses as we explore the top 5 attractions you must visit in Jaipur for soaking in what makes the alluring Pink City so special.

Hawa Mahal Jaipur: Catch the Breeze at the Palace of Winds

Jaipur's most distinctive landmark, Hawa Mahal is an extraordinary five-storey fa ade built from pink sandstone and standing tall in the heart of the old city. Constructed to resemble Lord Krishna's crown, it has 953 delicately carved jharokha (casement) windows designed to resemble a honeycomb.

This unique structure allowed royal ladies to observe city life and processions below in privacy through the small windows, while the west-facing rear wall funneled cool breezes inside giving it the name 'Palace of Winds'. Spend an hour admiring detailed carvings, getting lost in labyrinthine chambers, and buying colorful souvenirs.

Top tip: For budget travelers, you get the same iconic view from outside for free too!

Amber Fort Jaipur: Get Lost in Opulence of Royalty

The formidable Amber Fort, built with red sandstone and white marble is an architectural wonder reflecting Hindu Rajput and Mughal influences. Just 11 km outside Jaipur, spend at least half a day exploring palatial rooms, striking carvings, precious stones inlayed walls, and the stunning mirror embellished Sheesh Mahal chamber.

Don't miss the Chance to ride up the fort hill on elephant back for that quintessential Indian vibe. The view over Maotha Lake from ramparts is great too. End your visit watching the breathtaking light and sound spectacular after dusk at Amber.

Must do: Dress up in ornate royal costumes for those Instagrammable photographs!

City Palace Jaipur: Gaze into Royal Splendor

In the heart of the old city lies the sprawling City Palace complex a striking fusion of Mughal, Rajasthani and European architectural styles. Flanked by impregnable walls, part is still home to Jaipur's Royal Family. The public rooms like Diwan-e-Khas offer a glimpse into royal grandeur as you admire ornately painted walls, sparkling chandeliers, carved pillars and mosaic glasswork.

The Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum also houses an enviable collection of royal costumes, arms, carpets and miniature paintings for history buffs. Don't forget to peek into the palace's specialty restaurants before leaving!

Insider tip: Visit around 11:30am on weekdays to avoid most crowds.

Jantar Mantar of Jaipur: Stargazing and Sci-Fi Meets History

Constructed in the 1700s, Jantar Mantar is a fascinating collection of 19 fixed architectural astronomical instruments. Ranging from the 90 foot tall Sundial to misshapen walls and winding staircases, each served medieval astronomers to track cosmic positions, movements, and time. This historical park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site will appeal to visitors of all ages.

Let your imagination run wild as you navigate Jantar Mantar's quirky structures, examining the world's largest stone sundial and masonry astronomical instruments that seem almost alien, yet were built nearly 300 years ago!

Top tip: Download the informative audio guide for unlocking mysteries behind this ancient astronomical paradise even further!

Nahargarh Fort in Jaipur: Panoramas and Lavish Meals with a View

Crowning a rugged hilltop overlooking Jaipur, Nahargarh Fort was constructed in 1734 to bolster the city defenses. Though never saw battle itself, Nahargarh offers spectacular views over the scenic Aravalli ranges and Jaipur itself.

Stroll along ramparts or check out the wax museum recreating stately courtyards and battle scenes. Only 8km from the city center, save an hour for sunset drinks or fine dining at one of Nahargarh's restaurants. Padmendra Lal Joshi's Nahargarh Biological Park with Asiatic lion and tiger safari is right next door too making a great combo!

Best spot: Madhavendra Palace for Daniell's 19th century paintings of the city and coffee at Baradari overlooking sprawling views.

Beauty Beyond the Big 5: More to Discover

Beyond Jaipur's famous forts and palaces, also make time for highlights like the opulent 18th century water palace Jal Mahal, shopping for crafts and jewelry in colorful bazaars or a Bollywood movie at heritage Raj Mandir Cinema. Treat yourself to high tea at royalty-approved heritage hotels or go on an early morning hot air ballooning adventure for bird's eye vistas.

Lonely Planet editor Akanksha Singh traveled to Jaipur to experience its history and culture. Here, she shares some tips and insights for anyone planning a similar trip.

Road trips to Jaipur were a key part of my childhood in India . Before we left India, my parents would drive my sister and I over from Delhi on long weekends. We’d spent our time visiting local sights, stopping at streetside kathputli (puppet) shows, eating local food, and listening to ek tara , single-stringed instruments, played with a bow.

Some 20 years later, the familiar sight of the red-, pink- and honey-hued forts never fails to amaze me. People say India’s Golden Triangle – Jaipur-Delhi-Agra – is a sensory overload. And it definitely is for people who haven’t traveled through pockets of Asia. Dubbed the “Pink City” after its pink paint-slicked walls that are lined with shops, this trip to Jaipur took me deeper into the historic town's chaotic bylanes and beyond the city’s outskirts.

Agra vs Jaipur: which Indian city is best?

A luxury bubble tent at sunset in Jaipur

Where did you stay? What was the vibe?

I stayed at Teela the Glamping Resort in Achrol, a village an hour outside Jaipur. I’ve never “glamped” before (I studied geology at university; camping’s more my thing) but I enjoyed the novelty of the experience. It’s really no different from staying in a swish five-star hotel but in a “Moon Dome” – a geodesic tent – with stellar views of the desert, complete with raw dunes, tiny bulbuls and larks twittering away outside your door.

There’s a single restaurant, Rait, on the premises (food was good; I’d recommend the Indian menu over the continental spread) and Teela does offer hotplates and a mini kitchenette setup for long-term guests. However, I did make the mistake of thinking breakfast would be most enjoyable al fresco (it was – for all of two minutes) until I realized that gritty stuff caught in my teeth was indeed sand in my aloo paratha (potato-filled flatbread).

Amber Fort Jaleb Chowk at sunset

What was the most touristy thing you did?

I did so much touristy sightseeing on this trip and, since it’d been a while since I’d seen the highlights, I regret none of it! I toured Amber Fort , with its extravagant chambers and geometrically charged gardens, took photos of the iconic red-and-pink-latticed Hawa Mahal and visited the City Palace , which is still home to Jaipur’s royal family.

Built in the 18th century, the City Palace’s four gates – in an inner courtyard named Pritam Niwas Chowk (“beloved’s courtyard”) – are an artistic obsession of mine. Each “gate” is an extravagantly designed door, themed against a season and dedicated to a Hindu deity. If I’m being honest here, the most touristy thing I did was take an Instagram-esque video of a journal with the Lehariya Gate or Green Gate (which represents spring) on its cover with the gate in the background. The gate is spectacular: glossy forest green tiles frame an ornate, heavy golden door in a cinquefoil arch.

For those less obsessed with gloriously designed doors, the City Palace has much more to offer, including a museum and a splendid blue room (Chhavi Niwas), and parts of the royal wing are open to the public too. Plus, it’s right by Jantar Mantar  – an 18th century observatory that’s a UNESCO site built by Jai Singh II, a king fascinated by astronomy. (Bonus tip: buy a composite ticket to skip queues and hit up all of Jaipur’s attractions.)

Colorful plate of Thali

What was the best thing you ate?

Jaipur has an impossibly good selection of food, and I’m one of those people who plans their days around meals, especially when I’m traveling. If I had to choose, my favorite meal would be the Rajasthani thali (plate meal) at Kuchali Mud House , a quaint, family-run establishment in Chak Charanwas, a village roughly an hour outside Jaipur city.

Most Rajasthani thali meals boast a combination of dhal, baati , churma – baati is a crusted unleavened bread that’s softened with melted ghee (ideal for the once nomadic desert folk) and churma is crushed, sweetened baati , dressed with nuts and dry fruit. However, the fragrant gulab (rose) churma  – cerise and topped with slivered almonds – was new to me and delicious.

There’s a common belief in these parts that food cooked on a chulha (wood-burning stove), with freshly milled flours and freshly milked dairy is superior to their contemporary counterparts, and I have to agree. I have a reasonable spice tolerance, but those who aren’t as keen on heat are requested to call ahead to communicate this along with any other dietary restrictions. For a good Rajasthani laal maas (literally “red meat”), a decadent goat meat curry (with adjustable spice levels), try rait .

The writer tries her hand at pottery throwing during an outdoor lesson

What was the most under-the-radar activity you enjoyed?

I rode ATVs and went paintballing at Motosport Park (both are a combined ₹1700), but visiting a pottery community in Chak Charanwas (organized by the Kuchali Mud House) was the highlight of my trip. Jaipur is famous for its pottery with a cobalt blue glaze, which is Turko-Persian in origin. However, I got to throw tiny forms on a potter’s wheel with locally-sourced clay. I’m a hobby ceramist, so learning from experienced potters was an absolute boon.

Pottery is still largely a caste-based profession in India (which means it’s not usually a profession people get to choose, but are born and forced into). So, it was refreshing to see a thriving enterprise run by people who now also supply their terracotta pottery to big hotel groups in addition to selling it to visitors. They make everything from vases and diyas (lamps) to screw-top water bottles and sculptures.

What was the handiest thing you packed?

Layers and linens. I traveled in early March, when days are sweltering but evenings – particularly if you’re set up outside the city in the desert like I was – can get a little nippy. One thing I noticed about the rooms at Teela were that they had both ACs and radiators to bridge the change in seasons. Overall, light layers to wear over linen clothes and sun protection are essential.

It’s also hugely important to stay hydrated in the sun; I packed a reusable water bottle to cut down on my plastic waste. Most resorts and restaurants will refill your water bottle with filtered water on request (add chlorine pills if you need to be extra careful).

Also, the midday sun often results in phones overheating, so it’s probably worthwhile investing in a phone cooler, particularly if you plan on taking a ton of photos and videos.

Best tip for someone who wants to plan the same trip?

Many tourist spots in Jaipur frequently close for filming and there’s no way of finding out whether a certain attraction is closed for a shoot until you’re on the premises (calling ahead doesn’t always work). Leave plenty of time for sightseeing with the aim of revisiting popular sights if they’re closed.

Also, while there are a few cafes dotted around the city, chai is the caffeinated beverage of choice in these parts. So, if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to pack a cafetiere.
