James told us…..

“Be prepared for a laugh-out-loud, high-energy night out filled with tantalising flavours that will leave your taste buds craving.

The live tours are brilliant so I can’t wait to get back out and do it all over again. If you’ve seen the live show previously then you know that our main aim is to have fun and if you haven’t been before, why not?!

I’m going to be cooking live on stage and hopefully you’ll pick up some tips to take to your own kitchen but above all else, let’s get together and have a laugh.”

James Martin has been entertaining and educating the nation for three decades with his expert culinary skills both on screen and through his best-selling cookbooks.

james martin cooking tour

Previous live tours have seen him build the ‘ biggest and best bacon and cheese butty ’, perform ‘ surgery ’ on a Barbie doll to create a Baked Alaska, invite audience members to show off their tattoos and even pick up his guitar to perform live.

More than 65,000 people flooded to see James’ last two tours to witness his expert culinary skills and for 2025 audiences can expect a no-holds barred night of entertainment, filled with delicious buttery recipes, comedy, cars, nostalgic stories and music.

James Martin Live at Birmingham Symphony Hall reviewed - 'like Saturday Morning show on steroids'

Smelling his butter-soaked food waft across Symphony Hall was tantalising yet torture as he smirked 'enjoy your kebab on the way home'.

James Martin Live

Alison Brinkworth

  • 09:31, 24 OCT 2023

James Martin on stage smiling at the camera

TV chef James Martin does warn the audience 'this will be like my Saturday show on steroids' but even I wasn't prepared for the riotous, frenetic two hours that followed. His straight-talking views on air fryers, butter, Joe Wicks and even his jaw-dropping treatment of a Barbie doll left no stone unturned.

From his unusual entrance at Birmingham's Symphony Hall , it was clear this would be an uncensored Martin in a no-holds barred night of entertainment. Not just about cooking and recipes , but comedy, cars, nostalgic family stories and music as he takes several turns on his guitar.

Swearing, calling for bans on air fryers and single cream and throwing in copious amounts of butter to every recipe, the Yorkshireman has a twinkle in his eye as he lets his character shine, with a touch of self mockery.

READ MORE: I tried Marks & Spencer's £45 beauty advent calendar filled with £340 of products to see if it's worth the price

What became clear is how funny Martin really is. His risque jokes that normally aren't allowed during Saturday prime time family viewing had the audience in stitches. Even Michelin-starred Birmingham chef Glynn Purnell , who was a special guest in the audience, was the butt of many good-natured jokes - and took them well.

This is the This Morning chef's fourth UK tour and first since Martin publicly apologised over a leaked clip of him berating co-workers behind-the-scenes . Although it was over a drain that had become blocked at his home during filming of James Martin’s Saturday Morning, the 50-year-old had opened up about having been diagnosed with cancer on his face at the same time.

Referring to that at the close of this show, there was heartfelt sentiment as he thanked everyone for the support and well-wishes he'd received in such a "difficult year".

James Martin cooking on stage while being filmed by a cameraman

It felt genuine and brimming with emotion - some of the main reasons why I think Martin is now one of the most popular British personalities of his generation.

Much of this new tour is sentimental and nostalgic. It opens with a touching unusual tribute to the late, great Keith Floyd (which I don't want to spoil) and spends all the second act reminiscing on food and Martin's experiences during the 1970s and '80s.

There's some wonderful memories about life with his nan, parents and sister, growing up on a Yorkshire pig farm. Fights with his sister between her doll and his Evil Knievel toy have obviously left their mark as he seemed far too keen to hack away at a Barbie doll. It was one of the craziest moments of the show that still haunts me, but makes hilarious sense when you see the final result of his recipe.

james martin cooking tour

When it comes to the recipes, there are nine he cooks live with assistance from his trusty side-kick Sam in what is most similar to his Saturday morning ITV programme and adventures in Spain and France. They include fantastic adaptations of his memories of everything from KFC to Berni Inn.

There's also a 'Hassleback Sarnie' that is literally a heart attack on a plate that takes his love of butter to a whole new level. It has to be seen to be believed.

Smelling his butter-soaked food waft across Symphony Hall was tantalising yet torture as he smirked 'enjoy your kebab on the way home'. Martin knows everyone would much rather get a taste of his homely creations instead, however high the calorie content.

POLL: Will you be answering the door to trick-or-treaters this year?

Breaking up the cooking are anecdotes and music from Martin plus plenty of audience participation that helps keep the atmosphere so lively.

Ahead of the event, an excited Martin had posted a picture of inside Birmingham's Symphony Hall declaring 'love this place, what a room!' Known for its unrivalled acoustics, Martin's elation became clear when he grabbed his guitar with a fellow musician to perform tracks by the Rolling Stones and Journey for a singalong.

If you want to know what the real James Martin is like, then this is the show for you. It's the popular chef in all his uncensored cheekiness, brimming with fun and naughtiness. Licking his fingers with a devilish look in his eye, Martin has the audience eating out of the palm of his hand during a joyous, refreshing night of entertainment.

The James Beard Foundation just announced their nominees for the 2024 Media Awards and Philadelphia is a finalist in two categories: Dining and Travel, and Profile.

The James Beard Awards are considered one of the nation’s most prestigious honors and are meant “to recognize exceptional talent and achievement in the culinary arts, hospitality, media, and broader food system, as well as a demonstrated commitment to racial and gender equity, community, sustainability, and a culture where all can thrive.”

Our February 2023 package “ All Hail the Hoagie ,” which just won a 2024 National Magazine Award in Lifestyle Journalism , is up for an award in the Dining and Travel category for “exemplary and comprehensive service journalism that relies on both critical voice and thorough research to bring a variety of dining options into perspective.” The package edited by Bradford Pearson, with Hannah Albertine, Adam Erace, Victor Fiorillo, Regan Fletcher Stephens, Carla Shackleford, and Sandy Hingston, is nominated alongside entries from The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Los Angeles Times .

“It’s an incredible honor to be nominated for a James Beard Award, even more so for a feature that honors the most Philadelphian of foods,” says features editor Bradford Pearson. “When we were working on this package, we aimed to make it just as useful for a local as a tourist, and to be nominated in this category specifically means we did just that.”

Philadelphia’s restaurant critic Jason Sheehan is also up for an award for his profile of Alexandra Holt. Titled “ Fine Dining on Fire ,” this story explores how Holt’s experimental restaurant, Roxanne, subverts our expectations of fine dining while challenging sexism within the restaurant industry. “No one deserves this kind of recognition more than Alex,” Sheehan says. “I will always be on the side of the anarchists and revolutionaries in this industry, and she certainly knows how to mix a mean Molotov.”

Sheehan’s competition includes The New Yorker ’s Hannah Goldfied and The New York Times Magazine ’s Alex Halberstadt. “I love it when Philly gets put up against the big kids in New York City. It’s a chance to remind everyone that we play just as well as they do — and look cooler doing it,” Sheehan says.

“Philadelphia magazine has a very proud tradition of covering the Philly food scene with voice and expertise,” says editor Brian Howard. “These nominations reinforce what our readers know intuitively: Like the dining scene we write about, our coverage is world class.”

Johnson’s Charleston, highlighting this early jazz piano leader’s influence and the iconic dance of the same name. Rangwanasha is in the spotlight for Samuel Barber’s evocative portrait of a small boy in the American South, Knoxville: Summer of 1915. The program wraps with a celebration of the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, with Cann at the keyboard making her CSO debut. ● July 13 – South African cellist-composer Abel Selaocoe* joins Alsop and debuts with the CSO performing his Four Spirits, which “takes the concerto format to thrillingly unprecedented places” (Bachtrack). Themes of ancestral wisdom, faith, and community permeate the program, as the piece is put in perspective alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s monumental Fifth Symphony and its distinct explorations of fate. ● July 19 – Conductor Ted Sperling joins the CSO with special guest vocalists to celebrate two iconic pop songwriters, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon. ● July 20 – Alsop and the CSO take the stage for Gustav Mahler’s final major work for orchestra, Symphony No. 9. Voted as the greatest symphony of all-time in BBC Music 2 Magazine, the evening-long work has beguiled audiences since its 1912 premiere by Bruno Walter and the Vienna Philharmonic. ● July 21 – Winner of the gold medal at the International Chopin Competition and recipient of many esteemed prizes, Japanese pianist Hayato Sumino* reunites with Alsop and makes his Ravinia and CSO debuts performing Fryderyk Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1. In the second half of the program, Alsop explores symphonic storytelling during the turn of the 19th century, leading the CSO in Richard Strauss’s tone poem Don Juan and Maurice Ravel’s choreographic symphony Daphnis et Chloé (Suite No. 2). ● July 25 – Mendelssohn's hit violin concerto, played by Augustin Hadelich^, is in the spotlight as Alsop leads the CSO. Also featured on the program are Bernstein’s joyous Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and Stravinsky's timeless Firebird Suite. Conductor Alena Hron , the 2024–26 Taki Alsop Fellow, guests on the podium to lead Geroge Walker’s Icarus in Orbit. ● July 26 – The centerpiece of Breaking Barriers 2024 is a space-themed concert complete with visuals and introductions by NASA specialists. Alsop conducts the orchestra in Holst’s The Planets, followed by a suite from Falkenberg’s The Moons Symphony. Audiences will see science come alive and hear from planetary scientists, including Astronaut Nicole Stott together with the composer, as they discuss how Falkenberg’s symphony offers new perspectives for humanity to contemplate our home in the cosmos. ● July 28 – Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship alum Carolyn Kuan leads this year’s Tchaikovsky Spectacular, complete with Ravinia’s signature cannons in the 1812 Overture. Making her CSO debut, she opens the program with the complete music from the first act of The Nutcracker. Desirée Ruhstrat also makes her CSO debut as the soloist for the cherished Violin Concerto. ● August 2 – Conductor Valentina Peleggi, another TACF alum, returns to Ravinia and the CSO, following a guest appearance during last summer’s Breaking Barriers Festival, to join with esteemed pianist Jorge Federico Osorio on Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto. Peleggi will also lead Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini and Respighi’s Pines of Rome. ● August 4 – Music director, conductor, and arranger Kevin Stites explores the music of legendary performer and film composer Henry Mancini for the annual Gala Benefit Evening. Curated and hosted by actor Rob Lindley, “Mancini at 100: The Music of Henry Mancini, from the big screen, to the small screen, to the stage and beyond” features Broadway vocalists Jessie Mueller* (Waitress, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), Norm Lewis* 3 (The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables), and Karen Mason* (Sunset Boulevard), with all three making their Ravinia and CSO debuts. ● August 9 & 11 – The CSO delves into operatic repertory as a semi-staging of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Idomeneo is conducted by Los Angeles Opera (and former Ravinia) Music Director James Conlon in the Martin Theatre. The work, set in Crete in 1200 BCE and telling a story from the Trojan War, shines light on a talented group of singers. Starring are tenor Matthew Polenzani as Greek king Idomeneo, soprano Andrea Carroll* as princess Ilia, and soprano Alexandria Shiner* as princess Elettra. ● August 10 – Conlon will lead an all-Mozart program with the CSO in the festival’s Pavilion between the opera performances. The program will feature both of the composer’s G-minor symphonies—the “little” No. 25, K. 183, and the “great” No. 40, K. 550—along with the Violin Concerto No. 5, welcoming James Ehnes as soloist on the violin. ● August 18 – Conductor Jonathan Rush, a frequent Ravinia guest in recent seasons and former assistant to Alsop, returns to the CSO podium. Chicago native Rachel Barton Pine takes the stage with Rush and the orchestra as the soloist for José White Lafitte’s Violin Concerto and Niccolò Paganini’s La Campanella
