Quick Overview: best Punta Cana to Samaná excursions

Looking to book last-minute and don’t have time to read all the details? No worries, the following overview shows you the different tours available when looking for a Samaná adventure to Punta Cana. If you are interested in all the details about Samaná, Salto El Limón Waterfall and Cayo Levantado and Bacardi Island continue reading this guide below as I will show you all the different options of how to get from Punta Cana to Samaná.

What is Salto El Limón Waterfall?

Salto El Limón, also known as El Limon Waterfall, is one of the most captivating waterfalls in the Dominican Republic. With its lush vegetation, vibrant waters, and picturesque drop, it offers a mesmerizing natural spectacle. The waterfall can be accessed through hiking or horseback riding, typically included in guided excursions from Punta Cana or other locations. Alternatively, Salto El Limón presents an opportunity for independent hikers to explore the trails, as they are reasonably well-marked even for those without extensive jungle experience. Upon reaching the waterfall—whether on a guided tour, horseback ride, or self-guided hike—you can relish in the invigorating natural swimming pool, boasting an enchanting emerald green color. It’s important to exercise caution during this Samaná adventure, as the path can be slippery, and there may be rocks in the pool.

The waterfall of Salto El Limon, one of the most picturesque waterfalls in the Dominican Republic

Salto El Limón is not only the most picturesque waterfall, with 120 feet it is also the highest waterfall in Samaná. Therefore it is even more impressive to visit this waterfall in the Dominicana Republic, especially as you can see another one on the way to the falls.

Where is Salto El Limón Waterfall?

Salto El Limón is nestled on the Samaná peninsula, located in the northeastern part of the Dominican Republic. The access point is the charming village of El Limón (Dominican Republic), situated between the popular fishing town of Las Terrenas and the vibrant city of Santa Barbara de Samaná. There are several El Limon Waterfall hiking trails (detailed below) that commence between the villages of El Limón and Rancho Español. If you’re driving, the approximate distances to the trailheads are 30 minutes to Las Terrenas, 2.5-3 hours to Santo Domingo , 3-3.5 hours to Puerto Plata , and 4.5 hours to Punta Cana. For those relying on public transport , the journey takes slightly over 30 minutes from Las Terrenas and Santa Barbara de Samaná.

When to go to El Limón Waterfall?

El Limón Waterfall (Dominican Republic) is best visited during the rainy season or at the beginning of the dry season as in some years the waterfall dries out pretty much at the end of the dry season. In this case, particularly in the months of April to June, you might only see a trickle running down the impressive drop. Therefore, the best time to visit Salto El Limón Waterfall is between August (or after the first rains have arrived) and March more or less.

In terms of the time of the day, it is best to visit Salto del Limon in Samaná as early as possible in the morning – ideally before 9am – or late in the afternoon after 3pm, to avoid the crowds of tour groups during the day.

The journey to Salto El Limon Waterfall begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel or all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana , covering pick-ups in areas such as Cap Cana, Cabeza de Toro, Bavaro, Macao, and Uvero Alto . As you travel northwestward, a scenic drive unfolds along a newly constructed road, meandering between the majestic mountains of the Cordillera Oriental, including the notable Montaña Redonda , and the picturesque coastline. En route, you’ll pass through quaint villages and witness the lush rice terraces, immersing yourself in the local ambiance.

Upon reaching one of the small ports along the Miches – Sabana de la Mar route (which depends on the tour operator you book), you transition to a boat for a 15-mile ride from the Punta Cana side to the Samaná peninsula. The boat journey may vary in intensity, influenced by the day’s wind and waves. Upon arrival in Samaná, you’ll switch to a safari truck, traversing the verdant Samaná mountain range, abundant with lush vegetation and charming fishing villages, on your way to the ranches that mark the beginning of the tour to El Limón Waterfall.

At this point, you’ll have the option to choose between a horseback ride or a hike. While a horseback ride is available, I recommend opting for the hike, not only to challenge your fitness but also to support the mules and horses, which may not always be in optimal condition (so express it positively – in other words, the horses or mules are getting treated very poorly). The El Limón Waterfall hike takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes and although the trail can be rocky and muddy, it is a manageable trek.

Hike to the waterfall of Salto El Limon on the Samaná peninsula

For both options – hike or horseback ride – you have to first climb down and afterwards climb up a natural staircase of around 150 feet altitude to reach Salto El Limón Waterfall. That’s equal to the height of this beautiful waterfall.

Please note that if you decide on horseback riding you get assigned a private guide who is taking care of your horse and is guiding you all the way to the waterfall El Limón. They also make sure you are comfortable and enjoy the ride. Those local guides usually don’t get paid (it doesn’t matter which tour you book), so please tip them generously. That’s one of the few things I don’t like about Salto El Limón in Samaná, but unfortunately, that’s how their business is organized. Again, the better option would be opting out from the horseback ride as the horses are not getting treated well anyway. Hiking to El Limon Waterfall is definitely the better option here, even though your guide might try to convince you of the opposite.

After refreshing yourself in the natural swimming pool, you ride or hike back to the starting point of the El Limón Waterfall tour and can enjoy a typical Dominican lunch. Back in the safari trucks, you are heading back towards the port of Samaná where you embark on the boat and just take a quick 15-minute hop to the gorgeous island of Cayo Levantado, which is also widely known as Bacardi Island (apparently, this was where the famous Bacardi commercial was filmed, but there is no real proof about it). Anyway, Bacardi or not, you can enjoy the beach and the turquoise ocean before heading back from Samaná by boat to the mainland and from there by bus back to your Punta Cana resort .

If interested in this Punta Cana to Samaná tour, please check out the following hand-selected options, which are some of the recommendable excursions from Punta Cana to El Limón Waterfall and Cayo Levantado.

As you can see from the description of those Samaná adventure tours, these excursions from Punta Cana are quite long, as they have several stages of transport: bus – boat – safari truck – hike/horseback ride and the same way back. The amazing thing about it is that it doesn’t get boring, the negative point might be that it’s just too long because the whole excursion from Punta Cana to Salto El Limón takes 10-12 hours – which is also why most of the El Limón Waterfall excursions only have average reviews. However, if you see the journey as part of your trip, the tours to Salto de Limon are enjoyable.

Guided air excursion to El Limón Waterfall from Punta Cana

If you feel that this is too long then you should check out the excursion by airplane as it cuts the transport part considerably. Instead of the long bus and boat journey, you board a plane at Punta Cana International Airport and hop over to Samaná in a fraction of the time. This tour is called Samaná Explorer from Punta Cana by plane * and comes with a couple of additional perks on top: – smaller groups, as the plane usually only fits 8 to 19 passengers – less time in the bus and more time on the Samaná peninsula – amazing views on the Dominican Republic from above, including Punta Cana, the Cordillera Oriental and the Samaná peninsula (depending on the flight route of the day)

Playa Esmeralda seen from above, during the flight from Punta Cana in direction to the Samaná peninsula

Once you arrive at the local Samaná airport of Arroyo Barril, the procedure is similar to the guided land excursion starting with the part of the safari truck. Some companies swap this truck for a private van as well, depending on the tour. You head over to the area of Salto del Limón (usually a bit earlier than the regular groups from Punta Cana), hike or horseback ride to the El Limón Waterfall and visit Cayo Levantado (Bacardi Island) on the way back. Once you are done here, you head back to the Arroyo Barril Airport and fly back from Samaná to Punta Cana – again with marvelous views if the weather permits. As the planes are super small, you shouldn’t be claustrophobic, but the big advantage is that nearly everyone in the plane has a window seat and can admire the Dominican Republic from above.

Check the prices of both Punta Cana to Samaná tours, the land excursion and the Samaná Explorer by plane. Sometimes the difference is amazingly small. At the time of writing, some tours by bus are offered at 179 USD per person (even there are existing a few cheaper options), while the plane excursion is priced at around 300 USD for 2023. That’s not so much of a difference considering you are getting two panoramic flights on top.

You don’t like these guided excursions and would prefer to go on your own? Absolutely possible! Just count in some additional time as driving there the whole way is a bit far and would not be feasible for 1 day. That’s why I would highly recommend making a 2- or 3-day road trip out of it – either as a self-drive tour or with a private driver. This also gives you the advantage that you can visit Salto El Limón very early in the morning or very late in the afternoon and therefore have a high chance of having this beautiful waterfall just for you. You can check out a possible itinerary from Punta Cana to Samaná in this article .

The waterfall of Salto El Limon, one of the most picturesque waterfalls in the Dominican Republic

How do you organize this trip?

Well, it depends! If you would like to do it as a self-drive tour, just rent a car ( my recommendation is here *), book yourself an accommodation * in the popular beach town of Las Terrenas (the complete opposite of Punta Cana) and head off early the next day on your way to El Limón Waterfall.

If you prefer a private driver, I can help you with finding one, then you just need your accommodation on the Samaná peninsula and you are good to go.

Visit waterfall El Limón Waterfall from Santo Domingo

Guided excursion to salto el limón from santo domingo.

If you are based in Santo Domingo , incl. its beach towns Boca Chica and Juan Dolio, there are – as far as I know – no guided group excursions to the waterfall El Limón on the Samaná peninsula. Therefore, a private excursion (where you can combine El Limón Waterfall with some other highlights of the Samaná peninsula, for example, the pristine beaches of the area or the popular beach town of Las Terrenas) would be the only option to reach Salto De Limón for a day-trip.

However, even better would be a 2- or 3-day road-trip to Samaná , as the driving time from Santo Domingo to El Limón Waterfall is still around 3 hours, which is pretty long for a day trip. Such a Samaná road-trip is particularly interesting as the peninsula is stunning and will blow your mind away with its natural beauty and unspoiled nature. Samaná is harvesting millions of coconuts every year, so you can imagine how many palm trees you can find here. The beaches in Samaná are no comparison with those in Punta Cana , as they are mostly pristine and empty – you can have a 2-mile beach in Samaná all on your own. So why not explore a little bit more and plan a 2- or better 3-day itinerary ?

You can find a sample of my road trip ideas and itinerary proposals here . Furthermore, you can contact me here and we can work out a cool and personalized Dominican Republic itinerary together.

Visit waterfall El Limón Waterfall when you are already in Samaná

Many people choose to spend their vacation right in Samaná – because of the relaxed beach town vibe, the pristine beaches and the lower prices, even transportation from the airports in the Dominican Republic to the Samaná region is a bit more difficult than in Punta Cana .

If you are already in Samaná you can choose between two options to visit El Limón Waterfall: going on an organized tour or heading to the waterfall on your own.

Delicious tropical fruits right on the road when driving in Samana

If you are on holiday in Samaná, you have different options to book a guided excursion to El Limón Waterfall. Advantages of these tours: some of them leave early so that you reach the waterfall before other people arrive from cruise ships or from Punta Cana.

If you are staying at one of the few all-inclusive resorts in Samaná, you can book one of the regular tours, where you get picked up and later head to the trailhead of Salto El Limón by safari truck. These Samaná adventure tours are considerably shorter than the ones described above from Punta Cana because depending on where you are staying, the driving time is just 20 – 60 minutes. Upon arriving at the ranch, you saddle up the horse and start horseback riding (or hiking) to the waterfall Salto El Limón (Samaná). As mentioned, I would recommend the hike as the horses or mules are not in good shape, furthermore the trail is a good challenge for your physical fitness. And by the way, I was once riding the horse and felt more in danger than when walking due to the uneven path, that’s also one of the reasons I have done all the El Limón Waterfall hiking trails by foot since then.

Hike to the waterfall of Salto El Limon on the Samaná peninsula

Once you have arrived at El Limón Waterfall and climbed down the 150 feet staircase, you can refresh yourself in the natural swimming pool and enjoy the cold river and gorgeous colors. After the hike (or horseback ride) back you usually get a local Dominican lunch and drive back to your accommodation afterwards. The whole El Limón Waterfall excursion just takes around 4-6 hours as opposed to 10-12 hours when coming from Punta Cana to Samaná, but does not – in most cases – include “Bacardi Island” (Cayo Levantado).

Here you can find some of the best El Limón Waterfall excursions from Samaná: – El Limón Waterfall without pick-up (starts right at El Limón) * – El Limón Waterfall from Las Terrenas * – El Limón Waterfall from Las Terrenas (Private Tour) * – El Limón Waterfall from Santa Barbara de Samaná *

If you would like to be particularly early at El Limón Waterfall (Dominican Republic), I can recommend Flora Tours * from my own experiences. They start their tours in Las Terrenas (no other pick-up points) at the latest at 8 am and just go in small groups which means you are at the waterfall usually around 9 am, which (nearly) guarantees you some unspoiled views and experiences of Salto El Limón (Samaná). Further plus: if you reserve with 2 people and they don’t have other reservations for that day, they do the tour just with you – there is no minimum number of participants. This means you just pay the price for a group tour but get a private tour if you are lucky.

Visiting El Limón Waterfall on your own

How to arrive by car and where to park at el limón waterfall.

Arriving by car to Salto El Limón is not that difficult if you are used to road conditions in third-world countries. Saying that, if you have driven in similar countries before, you can easily rent a car in the Dominican Republic . If this is your first time in this kind of environment I highly recommend a private driver.

To reach Salto El Limón, just enter El Limón Waterfall (Dominican Republic) in Google Maps and follow the instructions. Depending on where you are coming from, the distance and driving time to the trailheads are as following:

– from Las Terrenas: 12 miles / 30 minutes – from Las Galeras: 25 miles / 1 hour – from Santo Domingo : 100 miles / 2:40 hours – from Puerto Plata : 120 miles / 3:45 hours – from Punta Cana: 200 miles / 4:20 hours

You can park your car at one of the several paradas and ranches which are signposted along the road between the villages of Rancho Español and El Limón (Dominican Republic). Those are properties of small family-operated tour operators. All the tours to Salto El Limón waterfall, it doesn’t matter if guided or not, if hiking or by horse, start from here. Check the map below with all of the El Limon Waterfall Hike Starting Points to get a full overview of where you can park (for example for Sendero Franklin you park at “Parada Franklin” respectively “Rancho Franklin”)

Hike to the waterfall of Salto El Limon on the Samaná peninsula

Reaching Salto El Limón by public transport

If you would like to reach Salto El Limón Waterfall by public transport, you can connect either via Las Terrenas or Santa Barbara de Samaná. Little pick-ups or minivans are leaving Las Terrenas at the cemetery right in front of La Bodega or in Santa Barbara de Samaná at the public market.

When arriving from Las Terrenas, some of the vans/pick-ups run all the way to Santa Barbara de Samaná. In this case, tell the driver that you want to go to Salto El Limón and they will drop you at one of the different trailheads.

If the minivan/pick-up just runs until the village of El Limón (Samaná), you have to get a motoconcho (motorcycle-taxi) from there to your preferred trailhead or simply walk half a mile to the first trailhead, Sendero El Café (see below for explanations of the different trails).

El Limon Waterfall Accommodation

Usually, most people visiting Cascada El Limón Waterfall are staying in Las Terrenas ( check here for the best Las Terrenas accommodation *), which is only a 30-minute drive away. Still, if you’d like to stay even closer, there are a few accommodation options available right in El Limón in Samaná, a busy little village mostly unaffected by tourism (except for the daily El Limón Waterfall excursions):

De Luz Hotel ($): a very affordable small hotel, with a couple of rooms which just got renovated when I was there a couple of years ago. No frills, but clean and great value for money. De Luz Hotel is located right in El Limón town and within walking distance of several restaurants and smaller shops but still set in a peaceful surrounding (call +1 809 757 5168 for availability).

De Luz Hotel in El Limon, Dominican Republic

Lutix Hotel * ($$): another affordable option in El Límon (Samaná), yet more expensive than De Luz Hotel as it offers more amenities such as a swimming pool and a restaurant. It is located slightly out of town but still walkable to El Limón. To the trailhead for the EL Limón hiking trail “Sendero El Café”, it is a 1-mile walk. ( check prices and availability here *)

Samana Eco-Lodge * ($$$): a unique hotel right in El Limón, just a few hundred feet behind the town, amidst the beautiful green and lush nature. You can expect a true eco-lodge here, where you can connect with nature and enjoy peace and happiness. Just note that the rooms don’t have proper walls. ( check prices and availability here *)

Local tours to waterfall Salto El Limón

Once you arrive at one of those ranches (called “paradas”), the owners will most likely try to sell you a tour which usually includes the horseback ride and lunch. If you are interested in one of those tours, be prepared to haggle as they tend to overcharge. However, if you would like to have a tour with horseback ride and lunch I recommend booking one of the excursions listed above. There are hardly any advantages when going with the local tour operators as they are not as customer-orientated but more money-orientated. You probably have a better experience when going with an official tour *.

And, as a reminder I want to mention it again, most of the horses used for the El Limon Waterfall excursion – including those of the local tours and owners – are in pretty bad shape. Please don’t use them and better enjoy nature on one of the amazing El Limon Waterfall hiking trails.

Hiking trails to waterfall Salto El Limón

On the other side, if you don’t want to have a tour at all, you are good to go once you park your car at the ranch. You might have to pay around 100-200 DOP as a parking fee and the ranch owners will try to tell you that it is dangerous to go on your own, but it is not as long as you have hiking experience, are in decent physical shape and head off with your GPS application to track your trail. Alternatively, hire a guide from the ranches and pay him around 20-40 USD per group (without horses, without lunch) and stay firm with your offers – they will try to milk more money out of you.

If you decide on visiting on your own, you have plenty of El Limon Waterfall hiking trails available. The good thing compared to other hiking areas in the Dominican Republic is that the hiking trails are marked in some way, so it is one of the few occasions where you can go hiking in the country without proper field experiences ( check out this article for more hiking options in Punta Cana ). However, due to the limited signs, I recommend going with a GPS that tracks your way to make sure you don’t get lost. In total, there are 6 hiking trails (called “Senderos”) leading to Salto El Limón. I will describe them shortly from north to south.

Hiking map for the hiking trails to the waterfall of Salto El Limon on the Samaná peninsula

Sendero El Café

Sendero El Café starts just 1 km behind the village of El Limón (Dominican Republic), making it the hiking trail closest to Las Terrenas. With around 2 miles and a spectacular viewpoint on the way (which is unique and doesn’t exist on the other hiking trails), it is also the longest and the most beautiful hike of all trails leading to the waterfall Salto El Limón. It also contains two river crossings, so be prepared that your shoes get wet and muddy (which also happens on most of the other trails).

Sendero La Manzana, Sendero Arroyo Surdido and Sendero Franklin

These three trails are the shortest routes to Salto El Limón Waterfall. If you hike at a decent pace you can make them in around half an hour, as they are just around 1 mile long. On the way, you can see a smaller waterfall which, however, isn’t as impressive as El Limón Waterfall. A river crossing is also necessary on this hiking trail. The trailheads of Sendero La Manzana, Sendero Arroyo Surdido and Sendero Franklin can be found around 5 kilometers after the village of El Limón (Samaná).

Sendero La Javilla

This hiking trail to Waterfall El Limón is only a few hundred meters longer than the three previously mentioned and leads along a beautiful and quiet river for a long time. It has the lowest incline of all options and is therefore the easiest to walk, although your shoes will get dirty due to the mud on most parts of the trail.

Together with the Sendero El Café, Sendero Olga is the longest hiking trail with a distance of around 2 miles. It has the southernmost starting point and is the first trailhead when coming from Santa Barbara de Samaná. After half of the distance, it gets united with Sendero Javilla. The scenery here is quite attractive but not as spectacular as at Sendero El Café.

Lush and abundant scenery on the hike to Salto El Limon

You can also combine the different trails and walk one of the trails to get to the waterfall and another one to get back. Motoconchos and little public busses are plying the route along the trailheads, so if you choose this option you won’t have a problem getting back to your initial starting point or to your car.

Interestingly enough, there is not only El Limón Waterfall when it comes to waterfalls in this area. Right below Salto Del Limón, just a few feet away, is another pretty waterfall. You can go pass there independently from the trail you choose. If you arrive at Sendero El Café, you will see this waterfall anyway.

A smaller waterfall below Salto El Limon

There is also the smaller waterfall from a side river which I mentioned above, you pass it when using the Senderos Franklin, Manzana, Arroyo Surdido, La Javilla and Olga.

Another waterfall on the way to Salto El Limon

If you’d like to explore the region further, take yourself a local guide and a GPS and continue in the open terrain, as there are many streams, little cascades and unknown waterfalls. I once ventured out a little bit and saw a sneak peek of what’s possible but have to go back one day to deeper explore this region. However, please note that this is only for the adventurous people of you. If you are just on vacation for one week in the Dominican Republic, better stick to the marked trails or the guided excursions.

Summary: what is the best way to visit Salto El Limón Waterfall?

As always, the answer is “it depends”.

If you are staying in Punta Cana and would like to visit Salto El Limón Waterfall just for a day trip, it is impossible to do this on your own. In this case, your best option is the air excursion * as it is considerably smoother and more exclusive plus you can enjoy marvelous views from the sky. However, if this is above your budget you can also go with the land excursion *, just be prepared for a very long (but action-filled) day. You can see the best Punta Cana to Samaná excursions in the text above.

In case you have some days to spare, I highly recommend a multi-day road trip from Punta Cana, Santo Domingo or any other region in the Dominican Republic to Samaná. You can not only see the waterfall Salto El Limón, but also the other pristine and beautiful spots the peninsula has to offer, among them many virgin beaches . If you need any help crafting an itinerary, let me know via my travel coaching request .

If you are already in Samaná, you have two options. You can either go with one of the guided tours starting from your accommodation * or you try to organize everything on your own. If you are staying in a resort or a villa and are not fancy to negotiate, to haggle and to prepare your daily itinerary, I would recommend a guided excursion as this is the smoothest way to visit El Limón Waterfall. You can also decide if you want to hike or horseback ride on these tours.

On the other side, if you are an adventurer, have experience in traveling developing countries independently and are in an at least decent shape to hike the trails, you can explore Salto De Limón on your own. Thanks to the signs and the maps on every trailhead, it is possible to walk this without a guide as long as you hike carefully.

It doesn’t matter which option you choose, you will have a great experience when visiting Salto El Limón Waterfall as it is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Dominican Republic. Make sure you visit as early as possible (before 9 am) or as late as possible (after 3 pm) to have as few other people as possible around you. Take your swimsuits, camera, sufficient water and hiking boots with you and enjoy a marvelous day in the abundant and lush nature of the Samaná peninsula. If you want to put the icing on the cake of an unforgettable Punta Cana vacation you shall decide on the Samaná Explorer from Punta Cana by plane excursion *. If El Limón Waterfall is too far for you and you prefer closer waterfalls, have a look at all the waterfalls reachable from Punta Cana in under 3 hours .

What to know about the Red Sox’ trip to the Dominican Republic: An important homecoming ... and a breath of fresh air

The Red Sox' two weekend games against the Rays at Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal are a big deal in Santo Domingo.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Spring training’s typically understated rhythms will receive a jolt this weekend.

On Friday, a large Red Sox contingent will travel to the Dominican Republic for a pair of weekend exhibition games against the Rays in Santo Domingo’s legendary Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal. For past and current Red Sox from the Caribbean nation, the idea of a homecoming game is deeply meaningful.

“I’m 48 years old. Every time I come into the country, there is a point of excitement when I’m going home,” said David Ortiz. “It’s a very special place for all of us.”

“It’s very big for the country to have these games,” pitcher Brayan Bello said through a translator. “People are excited. I’m glad the Red Sox are doing it.”

A statue of Hall of Fame pitcher Juan Marichal stands at the stadium named after him, where the Red Sox and Rays will play Saturday and Sunday.

This isn’t the team’s first such visit. In 2000, the Red Sox and Astros played an exhibition game at Quisqueya. The game was poorly attended, drawing criticism from players such as Pedro Martinez that Dominican fans had been priced out of seeing major league teams in their country.

MLB went two decades before returning to the Dominican in March 2020, when the Twins and Tigers played an exhibition game in Quisqueya — an event that was obscured when COVID-19 shut down the sport less than a week later.

Still, the return represented a meaningful milestone. In the most recent collective bargaining negotiations between MLB and the Players Association in 2022, players were adamant in their desire to play games in big league uniforms in front of friends and families in their home countries, and particularly in the Dominican — which, despite a population of just 11.4 million, had more than 100 native players on big league rosters on Opening Day in 2023.

“That game in particular was player-responsive,” said MLB commissioner Rob Manfred. “One of the issues that came up was that there’s such a large segment of major league players from the Dominican Republic, and we felt like it’s someplace that we need to go play.”

Once the decision to play in the Dominican was made, the Sox happily volunteered to make the trip, celebrating their rich association with stars such as Ortiz and Martinez, who will throw out the first pitches on Saturday, as well as current standouts Rafael Devers and Bello. Like all MLB teams, the Red Sox also have a baseball academy there to develop minor leaguers from Latin America after they sign.

“Generally, you’ve seen us raise our hand for international games to support MLB’s efforts to grow the game,” said Red Sox chief operating officer Jonathan Gilula. “Given the history of the game in the DR and the history of Red Sox players from the Dominican, guys on our current roster from the Dominican, and given our physical presence there with our academy, we were happy to go.”

The trip offers a festive interruption to the monotony of spring, a celebration in a country where baseball occupies a central place not only in sports and entertainment but in culture, politics, and the economy. Passion for the game — the focal point of a nine-inning party featuring music and dancing — is palpable.

“There’s a buzz and an energy and a noise throughout the game, even during breaks between innings, that is sort of infectious,” said Jeremiah Yolkut, MLB vice president of global events.

An estimated 10,000 people are expected to pack Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal for the Red Sox-Rays games.

MLB hopes that energy is on display over the weekend, despite the fact that the games will be exhibitions. Members of the Dominican baseball community believe the contests will not disappoint.

“We’ll be watching Saturday and Sunday — [10,000] managers,” said Alberto Castillo, a 12-year big leaguer who is now field coordinator at the La Javilla Academy in Santo Domingo. “If you go to Estadio Quisqueya, you’re going to see 10,000 people managing the game. That’s our passion for the game. We go crazy sometimes.”

For the teams’ Dominican players, the contests represent not just a chance to be surrounded by such energy but also to play in front of loved ones — often for the first time in years. Devers said he’ll have an enormous family contingent making the two-hour trip to Santo Domingo.

“Last time I played a game there was 2016 with Leones. Long time ago,” said Devers, referencing his time with Escogido, one of two Dominican Winter League teams that make their homes in Quisqueya. “It’s going to be great.”

While it might be natural to imagine some grumbling about a trip in the middle of spring training, the Red Sox are taking a different view of the opportunity. Manager Alex Cora said the traveling party will include many of the team’s most recognizable players — not only Devers and Bello but also Triston Casas, Trevor Story, and Masataka Yoshida.

The team is approaching the games as an opportunity rather than an inconvenience.

“We’re taking this very seriously,” said Cora. “I think it’s a good thing for us, too, to kind of change the pace, moving from [Fort Myers] and going over there for three days, taking care of what we have to do on the field, but at the same time changing what we’re doing in the middle of spring training and having fun over there.”

In a spring in which the Sox have faced almost daily questions about the low expectations surrounding them, perhaps the trip offers a chance to change the dynamics. Martinez imagined how it might rekindle some of the magic that used to swirl through Fenway Park during his starts.

“I was one of the guys that brought over the culture to Boston,” he said. “And I hope [the current players] learn a little bit more about our players and our culture, so they can bring it back to Boston and make it like it was.”

Peter Abraham and Julian McWilliams of the Globe staff contributed to this report from Florida.

Transporte Público En La República Dominicana

Moto taxi (Motoconcho) en Santo Domingo

Foto: Massiel Beco

¡Listo para salir y recorrer el lugar! ¡Qué emocionante! Hay algo en encontrar tu propio camino, lo sé. Es aventurado. Es el olor de la pura libertad (y los humos del diésel).

¡Vamos a salir!

City public transport car.

No siempre tienen señalización.

Santo Domingo public transport bus.

Dominican Motor taxi with driver.

Conductor de motoconcho en santo domingo

Motocicletas (Motores o motoconchos)

Best Ways To Get Around The Dominican Republic (For Cheap)

Posted by Emily Henkel on 10/1/19 6:12 AM

ILP DR

Feel like a local with these tricks and tips to get around this sunny Caribbean island.

Tourism is a huge part of the Dominican Republic — who wouldn’t want to come hang out on golden sand beaches under swaying palm trees? With all these tourists, comes an easy way to get around. You’ll be able to call a taxi to take you to all of those beaches… but unless you have an unlimited budget, you’ll quickly run out of money if you go that route! Especially for our volunteers who are living here for an entire semester, those taxi rides really do add up.

Are you thinking about volunteering abroad? Come see what volunteering in the Dominican Republic is all about!

ILP volunteers are living close enough to hang out on some of those postcard worthy beaches on any weekend which is pretty much a dream come true, right? But you don’t want to make the mistake a few ILP volunteers have made in the past by getting to those beaches in all the wrong ways. There have been volunteer groups who have run out of money months before coming home because they never walked anywhere and only took taxis instead of public buses and cars (true story). Don’t be that group!

Luckily for you, you can save your money and get more out of your experience by rocking the public transportation system. We’ve broken down how to get all around this island (for the best prices) to make sure you can spend just a dollar or two getting to your favorite beach.

  • All About Gua-Guas The Deal With Public Cars Taxis Getting To Vacation Spots A Few Price Quotes

All About Gua-Guas

These are basically a public van and are your most affordable option (think of it like a mix between a taxi and bus). Gua-guas are typically white vans that drive a certain route, but people get on and off when they want, and the gua-guas only leave when they are full … in the DR, that means they don’t leave until they are crammed full of passengers. They’re headed towards a set destination, but you can get on and off all along the way, which means they typically take longer than a taxi would, but they are significantly cheaper (and an experience you can’t miss out on).

There are two employees on the gua-gua: the driver and the one leaning out the window or sometimes out the open door yelling "gua-gua!" as a way to alert pedestrians that they can get a ride.  Around town, you can tell who the gua-gua yellers are because they have one really tan arm (the right one) and one really buff arm from hanging onto the gua-gua so they don't fall out. Hopping on one is a crowded ride that’s a total experience (see if you can beat the record of counting 30 people in a 15-passenger gua-gua during your ILP semester!)

Catching A Gua-Gua

You’ll need to head to the nearest gua-gua stop. There are a few around Puerto Plata so volunteers can hop in a taxi and just say “gua-gua Sosua” (or wherever you are headed) to let your taxi driver know where to drop you off. No need to know any Spanish, that’ll get you where you need to do. You pay the gua-gua driver directly. If you don’t know the price, just pay attention to what everyone else is paying. If you ask the price, you’ll get a ticket that’s 10x more expensive because you aren’t a local. Even when you pay what the locals are paying for a ticket (let’s say 65 pesos) you may be asked for a few more pesos (like 75 or 80 … it’s known as the gringa tax). Even with that little extra, you can get around the DR for cheap using gua-guas!

When you get to the gua-gua station, whoever is working will be able to tell you which gua-gua to get on (there will be a few to choose from). When you’re traveling back home, just hop on a gua-gua that says “Puerto Plata” on a little sign in the front.

Where Can I Go On A Gua-Gua?

Gua-guas go just about anywhere! Volunteers frequently take gua-gua to Sosua/Playa Alicia, and Laguna Yasica, but you can also take it farther to places like Monte Cristi and Samana as well. It just takes longer than getting a Caribe bus (more on those later).

If you’re going more than about 30ish minutes, you may want to look into a long-distance bus option because gua-guas typically have transfers and the price ends up being about the same if you booked a Caribe bus if you’re traveling pretty far.

Here are some of our favorite day trips and weekend trips from Puerto Plata that can be reached by gua-gua if that helps you figure transportation out.

ILP DR

The Deal With Public Cars

These are kind of like the car version of a gua-gua. They drive a set route and stop along the way. You’ll get to know the stops around your neighborhood and the routes. For example, there’s a public car route that goes from Javillar to Costambar, and cars are marked with a little “J-C” sign.   Another route is the “P-S” route — that takes you from Puerto Plata to Sosua.   These cars will also take you into Puerto Plata city: they just drop you off down the street from the city center.

It can be kinda tricky to tell the difference between a public car and the other cars on the road, but there should be a little sign on top of the car with their routes (J-C or P-S). It's hard to see at first, but if you look, you can see them.

There are other popular routes, these are just a couple of examples. ILP volunteers will be able to work with their Local Coordinator and other local staff they work with for more info on alternative routes, but between the gua-guas and the public cars, you’re pretty set.

Catching A Public Car

You’ll get familiar with where the public cars drive around your city and prices are very affordable. “J-C” cars are always 25 pesos a person, and “P-S” cars are always 65 pesos (it’s a longer route). The price isn’t negotiable, it’s just a known local price. Most drivers will tell you the right price (the opposite of the gua-gua drivers) but some may try to get you to pay more if you don’t know. Always pay action to what other locals are paying if you’re unsure.

Where Can I Go In A Public Car?

Typically, public cars are best for spots anywhere in Puerto Plata and nearby Sosua.   You can take them into Puerto Plata city as well, they won't go through the center but they'll drop you off just down the street.

ILP DR

Taxis

Taxis are also an option, but we don’t always recommend them because they're the most expensive option. It’s a quick way to get around and best used on vacation (when you don’t have time to figure out the local gua-gua or public car system) or if you’re really in a pinch, like being out past when gua-guas are running. It’s very easy to fall into the trap of just paying for a taxi everywhere you go because they are convenient, just be very careful. Some volunteers have taken a taxi instead of walking 20ish minutes to the local market for some groceries instead of hopping on a gua-gua, which slowly eats at your budget.

ILP DR

Getting To Vacation Spots

Public cars and gua-guas are great for trips that aren’t too far away, but if you’re looking to head to the other side of the island, you’ll want to know all about long distance buses and the deal about flights in the DR.

Long Distance Bus

Our favorite way to get to places across the island is through Caribe Tours. They’re our go-to option for traveling beyond Sosua/Cabarete or south of Puerta Plata.   They are big (usually yellow, green, or green and yellow) buses with comfy seats and typically have A/C which we love love love (pro tip: volunteers mention bringing a jacket to wear on these long distance bus rides in case the bus gets too chilly).   The Caribe Tours website has an interactive map that you can click and select “to” and “from” routes that are pretty easy to figure out even if everything is in Spanish. Prices are very affordable: a trip to Puerto Plata all the way down to Santo Domingo ranges from 300 - 450 pesos (about $6 to just under $9 USD) for a 3.5 hour bus ride. In Puerto Plata, Caribe Tours has their own section in the bus terminal, making it an easy option for those close to Puerto Plata.

Javilla Tours is another long-distance bus option to look at. They have frequent buses from Puerto Plata to Santo Domingo. It’s the same deal as Caribe: big tour buses with A/C (and sometimes WiFi). Here’s the address of the Javilla Tour bus station: Calle 30 de Marzo, Puerto Plata 57000, Dominican Republic.

Caribe Tours and Javilla Tours don’t go everywhere, but you may be able to find the route you are looking for with Bavaro Express. They have a route from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana   (a favorite vacation spot), something Caribe doesn’t offer.   It’s about a 3 hour bus ride, on a nice bus with air conditioning. The Bavaro bus ride is about $9 — you can check prices and times on their website .

Booking Tickets

You’ll be fine going to the station and booking them in person for these companies. Websites frequently shut down and it’s easy to have your ticket printed after you pay for it. If you're traveling with 15-30 people, plan on showing up at least 1.5-2 hours early to get a bus that can fit you all. If it’s just about 7-10 people, you should be fine about an hour before departure, and any less than 7 is typically fine 30-45 minutes before departure. This does change depending on your location (more popular routes fill up) so earlier is always better.   If it’s a holiday weekend or another busy time of the year, plan on getting to the station even earlier because things do fill up.

Good To Know

All Caribe buses leaving from Puerto Plata are all headed towards Santo Domingo, it’s the main hub. But the buses will either stop before they arrive in Santo Domingo to drop you off at your booked destination, or you’ll just stay on (or maybe make a transfer) when the bus leaves Santo Domingo to travel onward to your destination.

Here’s a pretty predictable schedule for buses leaving Puerto Plata and one for buses leaving Santo Domingo (though they are subject to change, so double check). Here’s a link to all the Caribe Tours phone numbers in all the different cities if you want to call and confirm some information.

Traveling Through Santiago?

You'll see that many bus routes to vacation destinations route you through Santiago, the second biggest city on the island. ILP groups sometimes have a couple of hours between bus transfers in this city, which is why we have a little guide for passing through Santiago .

Again, it's not an overnight destination or place to hang out for the weekend, b ut if you have the time, there are a couple of highlights to see (along with some food places to visit).

Flying

Flying is also an option. It’s typically the quickest, but most expensive by a long shot. There are a couple of airports around the DR: a flight from Puerto Plata (POP) to Santa Domingo (SDQ) hang around the $600 - $700+ range, but had long, 20-something hour itineraries that took you from Puerto Plata, all the way back to New York City, then brought you to Santo Domingo (we like looking things up on Skyscanner ). Compared to a $10 bus ride, we’re thinking you’ll probably opt to take a bus rather than fly!

ILP DR

Just to give you an idea of what the price difference is between all of these options, we’ve pulled together some favorite day trips close enough to visit on the weekends (and about how much it’ll cost to get there using a public car or gua-gua verses in a taxi).

Sosua  And Alicia Beaches

A beach perfect for a day trip. Get your go-to guide for Sosua and Playa Alicia here, but check out the one-way prices below:

  • Gua-gua: 65-75 pesos (About $1.27 - $1.46) Sometimes 100 pesos.
  • Public Car : 65 pesos (About $1.27)
  • Taxi : $25 - $30, split up to 4 passengers (max). They don't use a meter, so this is the price after some hard  bargaining: they’ll initially offer you a price of about $60 - $80 and sometimes don’t back that low.

27 Waterfalls

We have more information about all 27 waterfalls on this blog post — it’s absolutely a must-do during your ILP semester. Here’s the info on getting here:

  • Private  gua-gua: Groups typically get help hiring a private gua-gua so they can go with their whole group. It typically shakes out to be about $10 - $15 per person.
  • Taxi: Prices really vary, but hang around the $60 range split between a max of 4 passengers.

It might not seem like a huge difference between $1.50 and $5, but if you take a taxi every time you could have taken a public car or a gua-gua to your favorite beach, that amount really adds up. We’re bigger fans of saving money for big vacations and fun experiences like paragliding, snorkel trips, or a trip to stay in the Dominican Treehouse rather than just on taxis!

Best things to do in Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic

playa las ballenas las terrenas

Las Terrenas is the main hub on the Samaná peninsula, famous for its pristine beaches and endless coconut palm tree groves. The charming beach town is one of the best places for people who want to get away from the all-inclusive tourism with its countless resorts in Punta Cana or Puerto Plata. And even though Las Terrenas and Samaná are famous for their beaches, many more activities and adventures are waiting for you, particularly waterfall hikes, hidden fishing villages, and crystal-clear rivers. Check out all the things you shouldn’t miss in this article about the best things to do in Las Terrenas.

Table of Contents

Why Las Terrenas?

Las Terrenas is a fantastic beach town on the Samaná peninsula with dozens of virgin beaches, affordable beach bars, and a unique vibe that is hard to find anywhere else in the Dominican Republic. It resembles the perfect combination of touristic infrastructure and Dominican authenticity. Las Terrenas is the complete opposite of over-commercialized Punta Cana with its endless all-inclusive resorts, as affordable apartments, small holiday villas, local restaurants, and an easy-going beach vibe are predominant in Las Terrenas. It is the perfect destination if you’d like to explore the Dominican Republic on your own without foregoing a relaxed beach town with all the amenities you need for a stress-free beach holiday.

How to get to Las Terrenas?

Before we start with the best things to do in Las Terrenas, let’s have a quick look at how you can get to this fantastic beach town in the Dominican Republic . While there is an international airport close to Las Terrenas (El Catey International Airport), hardly any flights are landing there. Therefore, your best bets are flying into Santo Domingo’s Las Americas International Airport (2-hour driving distance from Las Terrenas) or to Punta Cana’s International Airport (4-hour driving distance) with non-stop flights from more than 35 American cities.

To get from any of the airports to Las Terrenas, you can either book a rental car (make sure to not drive at night on your first day) or organize a private transfer. A rental car might be beneficial for your later adventures, experiences, and activities in Las Terrenas.

The best things to do in Las Terrenas

So let’s start with some of the unique things to do in Las Terrenas and you will quickly see why those people who travel regularly to the Samaná peninsula love it there.

The best things to do right in Las Terrenas

If you don’t want to deal a lot with buying excursions or checking for suitable itineraries with your rental car, there are already a couple of attractions and things to do in Las Terrenas without even leaving the town.

The beaches in Las Terrenas

The number one attraction of Las Terrenas and probably the reason why you’re coming here are the beaches – and there are already super beautiful ones right in town. Playa Bonita, Playa Las Ballenas and Playa Punta Popy are the main beaches in Las Terrenas. They are perfect for any beach day you could wish for as you find everything you need: fine sand, shallow water, affordable beach bars, local restaurants and easy accessibility are the main features of Las Terrenas’ beaches.

Happy Hour in Las Terrenas

Once you’re at one of Las Terrenas’ beaches, you also shouldn’t miss the happy hour. And this means really happy prices here in Las Terrenas. There are a couple of bars along Playa Punta Popy and Playa Las Ballenas that offer Cuba Libre, Mojito and other cocktails classics for around 150 DOP per drink, that’s less than 3 USD. Among those bars are Rama de Olivo or the beach bar of Hotel Playa Colibri.

Hit the nightlife in Las Terrenas

If you feel that you want to extend drinking into the night, you can check out the small but vibrating nightlife of Las Terrenas. Particularly the bars around the Mosquito Art Bar and the Pueblo de los Pescadores are worth it when starting the night, before heading over to famous La Bodega, the most popular dancing and nightlife spot in Las Terrenas.

SUP & kitesurfing in Las Terrenas

If you want to get active while staying in Las Terrenas, you can rent SUPs or kitesurfing equipment or even take classes. A good shop for rentals (and classes) is located next to Afrika Beach Hostel at Playa Punta Popy.

Refresh yourself at the spring river of Playa Coson

Another beach in Las Terrenas you shouldn’t miss is Playa Coson – it is even the most beautiful one in Las Terrenas, as it is close to 3 miles long and is – particularly in its western part – absolutely pristine and virgin. Even though it is still located within Las Terrenas, you probably need a taxi or a Motoconcho (a local motorbike taxi for 1-2 people) to get to Playa Coson, but it is well worth it. You can also refresh yourself in the river which is flowing into the ocean, which offers super cool fresh water – perfect to rinse off after a dip into the ocean.

Best beaches on the Samaná peninsula

As you can see, Las Terrenas has already stunning beaches, but many more extremely beautiful beaches on the Samaná peninsula are worth exploring. Some of them are even so virgin and untouched that you will have them completely on your own – you should definitely put them on your to-do list for Las Terrenas. Most of the following beaches can be best reached by rental car.

Playa Rincón

Playa Rincón might be THE most famous beach on the Samaná peninsula. It features indeed a stunning setting, surrounded by green hills and a beautiful coastline. It offers a minimum of infrastructure (two local restaurants and you can rent beach chairs), but the main attraction is definitely its stunning beauty plus the crystal-clear river that flows into Playa Rincón on its west end. Playa Rincón is located in Las Galeras and a 1.5-hour drive from Las Terrenas.

Playa Frontón

If you head to Playa Rincón, you can ideally combine it with another great attraction reachable from Las Terrenas: Playa Frontón, another unique beach on the Samaná peninsula. It is only accessible by a 30-minute boat ride from Las Galeras (or by a 1.5- to 2-hour hike) and offers a dramatic backdrop thanks to its 400-foot-high cliff. The water here at Playa Frontón is particularly shallow with some smaller reefs around, making it a perfect destination from Las Terrenas if you’re looking for some decent snorkeling opportunities.

Playa Ermitaño

Playa Rincón and Playa Frontón are the more famous beaches on the Samaná peninsula. You most likely won’t be alone there, but the beaches are still far away from being crowded, especially when you’re visiting during the week.

However, there are beaches that you will have completely on your own and which are definitely a must-do in Las Terrenas when you’re an adventurous traveler. One of them is Playa Ermitaño, a beach somewhere between Las Terrenas and Las Galeras, only accessible by boat or an exciting 1.5-hour hike. The beach is so remote and beautiful that it was home to several foreign survival TV shows, focusing on the “Lost in Paradise” story. You might feel like in paradise once you have reached this beach, especially due to the spectacular tropical backdrop. Once you’re here, you can visit three beaches at once: Playa Ermitaño I, Playa Ermitaño II, and Playa Onda Samana.

Playa Las Canas

Not less worth visiting is Playa Las Canas, a gorgeous one-mile stretch of beach that is completely untouched and pristine. The only thing you’ll see here is endless sand and thousands of coconut trees. Similar to Playa Ermitaño, this might feel like you have found paradise and it is one of the things to do in Las Terrenas you shouldn’t miss when you’re an avid adventurer.

You can get here either by a short hike from Playa Lanza del Norte or by car through Agua Sabrosa, but the latter only if you have a four-wheel drive. The southeastern end of Playa Las Canas is also the starting point for the Playa Ermitaño hike.

Playa Jackson

Playa Jackson is another of Samanás’ untouched beaches and is even closer than Playa Ermitaño and Playa Las Canas (both are around a 45-minute drive away from Las Terrenas). The beach is shorter than the aforementioned ones, but not less impressive and paradisiacal, especially as it features a secret river that flows out of a cave straight into the ocean. To get here, check Google Maps for the location and park your car at Boulevard de Atlantico. Simply walk down the steep path for around 15-20 minutes until you reach Playa Jackson.

Best excursions in Las Terrenas

In case you’re wondering if there are other things to do in Las Terrenas than just beaches: yes there are! Beaches are just one of the main attractions in Las Terrenas, but there are further places to visit. Some of them can ideally be visited by guided excursions, so you don’t have to take care of anything.

Visit waterfall Salto El Limon

The trip to Salto El Limón is definitely the top excursion in Las Terrenas as it is not far away and an absolutely gorgeous site to visit.

Salto El Limón is the most famous and most picturesque waterfall on the Samaná peninsula – if you see the photos, you understand why. You can either take a horseback ride here (included with most excursions, but not recommended, as most of the horses or mules are in terrible shape) or hike along the trails, just be prepared for a muddy encounter. Most of the tour operators use the western trailheads, which will bring you to Salto El Limón after a 30- to 45-minute hike or ride.

Don’t forget your swimsuits when heading to Salto El Limón as you can swim in the natural waterfall pool.

P.S.: Continue reading our best things to do in Las Terrenas to see how you can experience Salto El Limon on your own in case you don’t want to buy an excursion.

Zipline Excursion from Las Terrenas

Another favorite among Las Terrenas’ excursions is ziplining. There are two zip-lining courses you can choose from: the one from Runners Adventures between El Limon and Santa Barbara de Samaná or the one in El Valle around the Dominican Tree House Village. Both feature mesmerizing views of the lush tropical vegetation and the multiple hills on the Samaná peninsula.

ATV excursion in Samaná

Another excursion from Las Terrenas are the ATV quad tours, which are a perfect introduction to the countryside and the local life. Most of these tours combine one of the pristine beaches with visiting authentic fishing villages, where you can learn more about local products, the way of living in this part of the Dominican Republic and the special characteristics of the Samaná peninsula. Those tours are usually done in small groups, hence there is a large difference between the typical dune buggy/ATV tours in Punta Cana, where you are organized in groups with dozens of vehicles, and those smaller group tours here in Las Terrenas.

Los Haitises National Park

When talking about attractions in Las Terrenas, Los Haitises National Park is another important place to visit. It is one of the most crucial areas for bio-diversity in the Dominican Republic as it is home to many species. It is particularly famous for its network of mangroves, the several caves with Taino paintings (Tainos were the original inhabitants of the Dominican Republic) and the hundreds of islands, which makes Los Haitises appear a bit like the famous Halong Bay in Vietnam.

Tours to Los Haitises National Park usually start in Sanchez or Santa Barbara de Samaná, but can be booked including transfer from Las Terrenas as well.

Whale-watching tours

Last but not least, and this is another thing to do in Las Terrenas not to miss, we should not forget the whale-watching excursions in the Dominican Republic as this is one of the biggest attractions of Las Terrenas and the Samaná area. Each year from mid-January to the end of March, the humpback whales visit the Bay of Samaná for the mating season. The warm and protected waters of the bay make it a perfect playground for these giant mammals. This is the perfect opportunity for affordable whale-watching tours, especially as strict rules are in place to protect the animals.

Whale-watching tours usually start from Santa Barbara de Samaná, approximately one hour away from Las Terrenas, but regular tours leave from Las Terrenas during the whale-watching season including transfers to Santa Barbara de Samaná.

The best DIY adventures and activities in Las Terrenas

After having covered a lot of beaches and excursions, let’s have a look at what kind of activities you can do on your own – without the need for a tour guide. This is in addition to all the beaches we have already presented above among the best things to do in Las Terrenas.

Hike Salto El Limon  Waterfall

You already know what Salto El Limón is. But if you feel that the excursions are not your cup of tea, you can also head there on your own.

Contrary to most other hiking areas in the Dominican Republic, signposting around Salto El Limon is existent. There are maps at each of the 6 trailheads and you can find some further signs along the trail as well. Still, it can’t hurt to have your GPS with you as getting lost in the jungle might happen quicker than you might think.

Starting points are either Parada El Café, Parada Franklin, Parada Arroyo Surdido, Parada Manzana, Parada La Javilla or Parada Olga. The trails are between 30 and 90 minutes of walking. The shortest trails are Sendero Franklin and Sendero Arroyo Surdido, the longest (but most beautiful) one is Sendero El Café.

People will try to convince you that a guide is necessary, but it is not as long as you feel comfortable walking on your own and consider yourself reasonably fit. Take a lot of water and sunscreen when you go + pack snacks. Try to be as early as possible at Salto el Limon (ideally before 9 a.m.) to avoid any tour groups. Salto El Limón is one of the most touristy things to do in Las Terrenas but it is definitely worth it as long as you can skip the crowds.

Waterfall hiking

If you feel that Salto El Limón is too touristy for you or if you simply want to visit other waterfalls on the Samaná peninsula, there are further options as well:

  – Cascada Lulu, located in lush El Valle, approx. a 20 to 30-minute hike

  – Cascada Rio de Coco, located along the road from Sanchez to Santa Barbara, approx. a 10-minute walk

  – Cascada Juana Vicente (shown), starting from Agua Sabrosa, approx. a 1-hour hike

Talking about El Valle, this is a fantastic place to visit for a quick road trip from Las Terrenas. It is a lush, wild, and gorgeous valley. The beach at the valley’s end carries the same attributes. It is a one-hour drive from Las Terrenas and can be perfectly reached by rental car. For a great fishermen’s lunch, head to one of the ramshackle beach restaurants and ask for the catch of the day.

Renting an ATV

We’ve presented the ATV tour further above among the Las Terrenas excursions, but the bustling beach town is also famous for its omnipresent quads and ATVs you can rent at every corner. Do so and you can have a day full of fun and adventure when exploring the beach towns, hills and villages. Make sure to check for the right insurance when renting them.

Mirador del Atlantico

One of the places to visit in Las Terrenas you shouldn’t miss with your ATV or rental car is the Mirador del Atlantico. Chances are high that you already pass this amazing viewpoint on your first trip to Las Terrenas when coming from Santo Domingo or Punta Cana. But just in case you haven’t stopped here, make sure to make an extra trip to the Mirador del Atlantico as it offers a breathtaking view of Las Terrenas, Playa Coson, and all the surrounding areas.

Are you looking for an incredible waterfall in the Dominican Republic? I’ve got you covered with exactly how to get to El Limon Waterfall (Cascada el Limon).

Getting to El Limon from Las Terrenas presents two distinct experiences: hiking or horseback riding.

My husband and I have explored both options ourselves, and are here to share our experiences so you can make an informed choice and plan your adventure accordingly.

As you plan your trip to the Dominican Republic, picture yourself surrounded by vibrant culture and lush landscapes, with the captivating El Limon waterfall as the focal point.

This destination goes beyond the ordinary tourist experience.

As you gear up for your tropical adventure, I want to share a story that mirrors the beauty of El Limon, inviting you to envision the experiences that await.

Let’s take it back to 2018 - the year my husband and I, still in our dating days, went on our first international trip together to the Dominican Republic.

el limon waterfall 1

Hiking El Limon became one of our first big adventures, laying the foundation for many more in the years that followed.

Now, celebrating a decade together, the allure of El Limon Waterfall drew us back.

This time, we embraced a different, more laid-back approach to reaching the waterfall.

In this article, we’re not just sharing our story but also offering you a guide to the various routes leading to El Limon.

Whether you love hiking or prefer a calm horseback ride, there’s a path that can be tailored to your preferences.

Join me as we explore the options, discuss the beauty of El Limon, and help you plan the perfect way to craft your own memories at this incredible waterfall.

Where is Limon Waterfall?

If you look at the map of the Dominican Republic, you’ll find the capital, Santo Domingo, in the south, the popular resort town of Punta Cana in the east, and, to the north, secluded beaches surrounded by lush rainforests in Las Terrenas, Samana.

To start your adventure to El Limon Waterfall, head to the small town of El Limon in Samana, which is just a half-hour drive from Las Terrenas.

I personally stayed in Las Terrenas both times I visited the Dominican Republic.

This beach town on the Samana Peninsula serves as an ideal home base for exploring El Limon and getting to El Limon Waterfall (Cascada el Limon).

The waterfall stands tall at 52 meters and is a popular site for tourists and locals, alike.

How to Get to El Salto del Limon

If you’re coming from Las Terrenas, consider it an excellent starting point for your journey to El Limon.

Not coming from Las Terrenas? > Here’s how you can visit El Limon from Punta Cana .

> Here is how you can visit El Limon from Santo Domingo .

On our initial visit, we embraced the local experience by taking the guagua (essentially a pick-up truck or public transport van that can seat 10 to 20 people) from Las Terrenas to El Limon and then hiking to the falls.

The second time around, we opted for a more organized approach, still starting in Las Terrenas and booking a tour that provided transportation from our resort to a horse trail.

From there, we enjoyed a scenic horseback ride leading us to the star of the show - El Limon Waterfall.

There are various routes to choose from, offering flexibility to suit your preferences.

Let’s get into more details below.

Guagua: Las Terrenas to El Limon Waterfall

First things first, you’ll need to hop on a guagua from Las Terrenas.

To catch a guagua, the fare is 50 RD, which is less than $1 USD per person one way . We woke up early, around 6 am, to ask the locals when to expect one.

Guaguas start running at 7:15 am and come approximately every 15 minutes until 6:30 pm.

In Las Terrenas, we located a bus stop on Duarte Street in front of the cemetery .

Simply wave one down, and pay in local currency when they pick you up.

During our ride, we shared the guagua with several other tourists, creating an interesting experience.

People spoke various languages - English, Spanish, and others - yet we all managed to communicate somehow.

We exchanged stories and learned a lot about people from around the world during this 35-minute ride to Las Terrenas, creating a cool cultural exchange.

Opening up to meeting people while traveling can result in a great experience, as we discovered during this journey to El Limon from Las Terrenas.

When you’re ready to leave El Limon, you can catch a guagua across from El Limon River back to Las Terrenas every 15 minutes between 6:30 am and 6 pm.

Salto El Limon Hike

After arriving by guagua from Las Terrenas, the journey to El Limon Waterfall begins with a brief ten-minute walk to the hike entrance from the bus stop.

el salto del limon 1

To access Salto el Limon, there’s an entrance fee of 50 RD, approximately $0.90 USD per person.

It’s essential to be aware and avoid scams; neither guides nor horses are required.

You can easily take on the adventure on your own for less than a dollar.

The hiking experience kicks off at the entrance, and the trail predominantly inclines.

Exercise caution, especially when crossing the river early in the hike.

el salto del limon

I highly recommend wearing water shoes with good grip ; crossing the rivers with bare feet is an option, but sharp stones at the bottom of the river can detract from the experience.

Back in 2018, I underestimated the importance of water shoes (as I struggled in the picture above).

Needless to say, I haven't gone anywhere without water shoes since that very day.

Although the surroundings are very lush and green, with gorgeous views surrounding your every move, it’s not all glamorous.

Expect to trek through mud and horse poop along the way.

At the top of the hill, a restaurant awaits with a scenic view overlooking El Limon waterfall.

A 10-minute descent from the hilltop leads to a smaller waterfall, providing a refreshing break after the hike.

Following this point, a slight uphill walk awaits to complete the journey to the majestic 52-meter-high El Limon Waterfall.

Overall, this took us an hour and a half to hike to the falls from the entrance, going at our own pace.

El Limón Waterfall Horseback

As you explore the various options for reaching El Limon Waterfall, you’ll come across opportunities to opt for a horseback ride.

Ethical Considerations

This can be a convenient alternative to hiking, but it’s crucial to be mindful of potential ethical concerns related to the treatment of horses.

Online reviews have highlighted issues regarding the well-being of horses in the region, including reports of poor treatment and malnourishment.

While personal experiences may vary, it’s essential to consider the broader impact on the welfare of these animals.

To make a positive impact during your visit, we recommend choosing tour operators that prioritize the ethical treatment of their horses.

Booking Experience

If you decide to opt for a horseback ride, take a moment to inquire about the treatment and care of the horses from the tour operator.

In our experience, we booked our tour through the resort we were staying with, Viva V Samana by Wyndham , to ensure we were going through a reputable operator that prioritizes a more humane and enjoyable experience for both the riders and the horses.

Horse Riding Tour Experience

During our horse riding tour, helmets were a must, and our guides walked beside our horses, assisting them along the way.

The trail spanned about 40 minutes, with some parts proving a bit steep, and our guides took the time to point out local plans along the route.

Once we reached a stairway area, the horses were parked, marking the transition to the next part of our adventure.

We approached the amazing El Limon Waterfall as we descended about 250 stairs.

While descending, take your time and hold onto the rail for support.

Once you reach the falls, a local is usually present, ready to capture your memories with your camera.

They offer colorful props like parrots and flower crowns for a unique photoshoot experience.

We tipped each photographer about $5 USD, but you can contribute what feels right to you.

Our photoshoot included couple shots, solo poses, various angles, and different spots around the waterfall - we had a lot of fun with it.

how to get to el limon waterfall

We even recreated photos that we took the first time we visited El Limon together.

salto del limon

After the photoshoot, we ventured into the cool waters. The falls provide plenty of shade, so don’t expect warm water.

Be cautious as the rocks around the waterfall are extremely slippery!

Wearing water shoes with good grip is a must.

We spent about an hour in the swimming hole beneath the waterfall, where rocks offer seating and you can swim towards the cascade.

Arriving early is advisable, as by mid-day, large groups tend to arrive, potentially crowding the swimming hole.

el limon waterfall

Before heading back to where your horse is parked, there’s a gift shop at the top of the stairs where you can purchase souvenirs.

Coming back on horseback takes the same path, which is why doing this half-day tour in the morning is great.

It leaves you with the rest of the day to relax in the Dominican Republic.

If you’d like, you can give a tip to the guide who walked your horse before you go, but remember, it’s completely up to you.

Don’t feel pressured.

Pets on Caribe Tours?

  • Apr 6, 2010

Here is the phone number for Caribe Tours in Sosua. You can check with them. 809-571-3808

Best to call, but have traveled on Caribe Tours many, many times and have never seen an animal. When I arrived in Samana in 1986, there was no Caribe Tour service. To go to Santo Domingo we went on former school buses imported from the US. Then there was no trouble taking an animal, or anything else. But, fortunately, those days are long past.

windeguy said: What we had to do was use another bus service to get our dog home to the north coast from Santo Domingo. It took about 4 transfers to make if all of the way using a combination of that less finicky (old school) bus and guaguas. Click to expand...

Well, I know the rule is "no pets" including cats, but I was just wondering if people thought it would be feasible to sneak on a cat in a duffle bag.

If you really don't want any problems, take a taxi. A bit pricey but no worries, no problems. Start checking prices now and you should find someone with a fairly reasonable price. The price of the taxi will save you a lot of possible grief.

I think I might send my big suitcases with Caribe Pack so all I'll have to deal with will be the cat and a backpack, and then take the roundabout guagua/Javilla tours/Aetra bus route to the capital. money can talk for you Do whatever other people will do, take your time while people are boarding the bus dont be the first one and do not expose your cat like you got a trophy keep it in those especial cage that are small for cats or whatever you got to carry the pet. keep on eye on the guy who is loading the bus and just pass him 300 pesos all in bill of 100. But the problem is that the bus is not express. and other staff may see it at different station. Also try Transporte del Cibao, located in Parque Enriquillo the same station to take the bus to Higuey. for sure they will take it, i just dont know their schedule or phone number. wont be surprise if other animals are in the same bus

Wow, I had no idea that my friend was so fortunate in smuggling our TWO cats aboard a CaribeTour bus from Samana to Las Americas. As it happens, she did use a duffle, but her plan was to manage them and the luggage and her 86 year old step-father all at once and a single duffle was easier than handling the two soft-sided containers that the duffle concealed. Anyway, the cats are Swiss now...
