Review of the Martin Barre concert on Jan 16th, 2022 in Boca Raton, FL

Jethro Tull has always had a bit of a split personality. From the get-go, Tull embraced both the light and the dark, balancing quieter acoustic pieces against the heavier progressive, metal, and blues rockers that earned the band its stripes on classic-rock radio.

Take Tull’s best-selling 1971 breakout album, Aqualung, for a start. The record’s decibel-shattering title track and amped-up anthems like “Locomotive Breath” and “My God” received all the FM airplay. But the 7-million-selling album also had a rich acoustic side, with nearly half of the album taken up with Elizabethan-folk tracks, such as “Mother Goose” and “Wond’ring Aloud” that featured tricky folk-guitar figures and intimate vocals.

Both sides of Tull were on full display during a South Florida stop of ex-guitarist Martin Barre’s new U.S. tour with his own band, including a live performance of Aqualung in its entirety. Nearly a decade after parting ways with Ian Anderson – Tull’s founder, singer-songwriter and front man – Barre is staking his own claim to the band’s rich legacy on his new tour.

And why shouldn’t he?

As Anderson’s trusty sidekick for 43 years, Barre played on every Tull album but the band’s debut, This Was, and the new Anderson-penned record, The Zealot Gene – the first to carry the Jethro Tull moniker in nearly two decades. His distinctive fretwork helped defined Tull’s classic sound, with Rolling Stone ranking his iconic guitar solo on “Aqualung” among the 25th best in rock music history. And he shares co-writing credits on several Tull songs, including 1975’s well-known “Minstrel in the Gallery” and 1999’s less well-known “Hot Mango Flush.”

In two hour-long sets January 16 at the Funky Biscuit in Boca Raton, Florida, Barre led his band — Dan Crisp on backing guitar and vocals, bassist Alan Thomson and drummer Darby Todd — through 21 classic Tull tracks, plus three of his own solo pieces. From the get-go, the band delivered rock-solid performances that managed to have the ring of familiarity yet still sound fresh and new.

Barre kicked off the first set by leading the band through a blistering retread of “Hunting Girl” – the BDSM-themed prog-metal rocker from 1977’s Songs From the Wood. From there, the band covered a dozen more tracks from the first decade of Tull, dating back to its 1968 debut, This Was. But this was no nostalgia trip. Virtually every song was given a new spin – including some barely recognizable arrangements. Highlights included:

• Scorching heavy-metal retreads of the jazzy blues-rockers “Fat Man,” “A New Day Yesterday” and “For a Thousand Mothers,” from 1969’s Stand Up — Barre’s debut with Tull. • A vastly reworked version of the title track from 1978’s Heavy Horses album delivered guitar-trio style — with Barre, Crisp and Thomson supplanting the piano-flute-acoustic-guitar motifs of the original song and Todd bringing the thunder sticks during the chorus. • Three Barre solo tracks — “Back to Steel,” from his 2015 album of the same name, “Lone Wolf” from 2018’s Roads Less Traveled and the rarity “After You, After Me” – all of which fit neatly alongside the more well-known songs from the Tull catalogue.

After taking a short break, Barre and company returned to the stage for the second set and the centerpiece of the show: Aqualung performed live, in sequence, with a boatload or surprises and new arrangements. The band opened the set with an amped-up mashup of “Nothing is Easy” and “Song for Jeffrey” that led straight into the six-note opening theme of “Aqualung,” drawing the first of seven standing ovations. Crisp seemed to channel Anderson’s wild-eyed stage persona throughout, singing through his teeth and hopping around the stage like a man possessed. Next up: “Cross-Eyed Mary,” with Thomson delivering solo lines on his five-string bass in place of Anderson’s original flute melodies with surprisingly satisfying – if surprising – results.

Then, Barre, Crisp and Thomson presented an extended acoustic set showcasing “Cheap Day Return,” “Mother Goose,” Wond’ring Aloud,” “Slipstream” and “Up to Me.” Pulling off an unplugged set in the middle of rock show isn’t easy, especially in a raucous bar. But the trio managed to make the acoustic interlude an emotional highlight of the show, with Crisp playing descant recorder in places, standing in for Anderson’s flute lines.

The band closed out the show with the heavier second half of Aqualung – with “My God,” “Hymn 43,” “Wind Up” and the album closer, “Locomotive Breath.” In every case, the band took dramatic liberties with the originals, bringing novel approaches and arrangements that managed to sound both familiar and entirely new. For instance:

• Barre launched into “My God” with an electric guitar blast that replaced Anderson’s original acoustic guitar intro and spliced an entirely new instrumental passage into the middle section that had initially featured a lengthy flute solo. • “Wind Up” and “Hymn 43” were transformed into heavy-metal rave-ups that had some in the crowd dancing and singing along on the choruses. • For “Locomotive Breath,” Thomson replicated the track’s haunting opening piano lines on his bass, playing the instrument like a lead guitar.

The ended the show with a bang, performing “Teacher,” from 1970’s Benefit album, as an encore, bringing the crowd to its feet one final time for a sustained standing ovation.

From start to finish, the show made clear that, at 75, Barre shows no signs of slowing down. He is not simply reprising the music of long-passed glory days. With every tour, he seems to have more energy and an endless supply of inventive ideas that give even the oldest tracks in the Tull canon a fresh new spin. At the same time, Barre’s band – playing together now for nearly seven years — has also grown tighter and more confident on stage. Crisp shares the center spotlight with Barre in ways Anderson never did. And Thomson and Todd move in lockstep, creating a ferocious rhythm section and foundation.

More than five decades after joining Tull, Barre has clearly found a new way forward that may be rooted in the past, but has more in common with that old train that won’t stop going forward…no way to slow down. Barre’s tour continues throughout the U.S. and Canada until June, before making its way back to the U.K. for a series of shows there.

Nothing from ” Thick as a Brick”? Sorry….that is the real Tull masterpiece and it deserves at least 5 minutes out of a 2 hour show. But thanks for not playing ” Bungle in the Jungle”. Catching the show in LA soon.

Hey Harry, I’m seeing him tonight too. The thing is, Thick as a Brick really needs to be played, completely on it’s own too. Also, what they are playing now is really for the fans, like myself, that listened to them from the beginning. Aqualung, of course, is a classic, but the earlier stuff is what established their fan base. I must say, I am excited and look forward to reminiscing.

"Things were gloriously easy back in 1969 because we only had two albums. Things are now much more tortuous": Ian Anderson on touring, bedbugs and Martin Barre

Jethro Tull are about to play 10 UK shows, and band leader Ian Anderson is hitting the rails rather than the road

Jethro Tull studio portrait

Beginning his working day with a 9am Zoom call, Jethro Tull leader Ian Anderson is a busy man. Here we talk about a new UK tour from Tull, the vinyl release of The Château d’Hérouville Sessions – the band’s great long-lost album from the 70s – and the likelihood of former guitarist Martin Barre performing with them again.

Alt

You’re seventy-six. Do you still enjoy being on the road?

I don’t know if ‘enjoy’ is the word. That’s like asking Lewis Hamilton if he has had fun driving his Mercedes for the last couple of years. Remembering every one of those thousands of words and notes for a couple of hours demands intense concentration and commitment. What I don’t like is the wasted time spent travelling or doing sound-checks, but without teleportation such is life. That’s why I travel so much by train.

You’ve described yourself as “Michael Portillo with a flute”. How much of the tour will be made by rail, strikes allowing?

I return home by car wherever possible because I like to sleep in my own bed, but usually I’ll take the train to the show instead of a car. Barring the strikes, I use the trains a lot. And unlike in much of the rest of Europe, generally speaking I don’t really have too many complaints about the service.

The Château d’Hérouville Sessions , the great ‘lost’ Tull album from 1972, is being released on double vinyl for the first time. Why did it not see the light of day for more than twenty years?

The Château was a place at which many great albums had been made, but within a day or two we found ourselves in difficulty. We were trying to build a big concept album, and we had recorded about ten pieces, but the equipment was ailing and failing. On top of that, people were starting to come down with dysentery, bed bugs and scabies. It was a very unhappy experience. So after two weeks we took a vote and decided to go home and start work on a completely new album, which became A Passion Play.

The Château d’Hérouville Sessions music was remixed by Steven Wilson, who has ‘freshened up’ the sound of several Tull reissues, as well as those of many other artists. What do you like about his work?

Well, it means that I don’t have to do it.

But seriously…

Steven has a comparatively younger set of ears, and is infinitely more capable than myself at dealing in the complexities of surround sound. And besides those technical skills, his enthusiasm for the music of that era – not just mine, but also of my contemporaries – is to be admired.

The forthcoming tour is called Seven Decades, and will span the band’s entire career, with the promise of a few unexpected obscurities.

When you say ‘spans the entire career’, it will offer little snapshots of our recorded history; it might only be one or two songs from each decade because time is limited. The set-list is the best compromise possible given the demands of touring with a complex video show in different countries, with differing expectations.

Things were gloriously easy back in 1969 because we only had two albums. Things are now much more tortuous. The skill is achieving a balance between the heavy hitters and our lesser-known works. For instance, Songs From The Wood gets rotated for a while before being replaced by Heavy Horses or Farm On The Freeway . It’s all about balance.

And what about the possibility of a new studio record? Jethro Tull’s most recent two albums, The Zealot Gene from 2022 and last year’s RökFlöte , were made in quick succession, although after a gap of more than two decades.

They were released in quick succession, though most of The Zealot Gene was recorded back in 2017, and delayed for a variety of reasons including covid. That means we are talking a period of around five years… It wouldn’t be reasonable to expect a new album until 2028. However, I do have a [projected] release date of April 2025, so hopefully I will deliver something by then.

What are the chances of Martin Barre, the band’s long-serving former guitarist, now out of the band for more than a decade, ever playing again with Jethro Tull?

I have no beef with Martin. But if an interview that I saw recently on YouTube is anything to go by, then he seems a very unhappy person. I don’t think that would make the atmosphere within the band very easy. Finally, after many, many, many years in which I had advised him to do so, Martin is doing his own stuff. He’s in charge of his own band, rather than a circumstance in which he is not the songwriter, producer or manager. At last he can do things his way. Judging by the amount of shows that he’s playing, he should be having a whale of a time, instead of being embittered about Jethro Tull.

Jethro Tull’s UK tour begins in Bournemouth on April 19 and ends in Liverpool on May 6. European dates follow in September and October. For dates and ticket links, visit the Jethro Tull website .

“The Music Carries You Along” | Martin Barre Talks a Half-Century of Jethro Tull and More

Image

On Thursday, November 2, guitarist Martin Barre brings his current tour A Brief History of Tull , to the Florida Theatre.

Barre has arguably come full circle. The longtime Jethro Tull guitarist was born in Birmingham, U.K., a working-class town that also produced other formidable ‘60s musicians who went on to form The Move, Traffic and Black Sabbath. Influenced by jazz and blues, as a young player Barre gigged around England, and in 1968 hooked up with Tull.

He made his Tull debut with the album Stand Up (1969), ramping up the group’s volume and intensity with a nuanced ferocity that still holds up today as protean metal . In total, Barre, who was with the band until 2011, appeared on more than two-dozen studio and live albums. His guitar phrasing, tone and melodic contributions were the perfect foil for Tull vocalist-flutist Ian Anderson’s dervish-like stage presence, helping shape and guide Tull’s iconoclastic mix of jazz, blues, English Isles-tinged folk and neoclassical excursions.

The Grammy-winning group went on to sell 60 million albums, including 11 gold and five platinum sellers, on the strengths of rock classics “Aqualung,” “Locomotive Breath” and the prog-rock suite, Thick as a Brick . Musicians as diverse as Nick Cave, Geddy Lee and Steve Harris of Iron Maiden remain vocal fans of the band.

Now at age 76, Barre is touring with A Brief History of Tull , where he and his band (vocalist Dan Crisp, bass guitarist Alan Thomson and drummer Terl Bryant) run through 50 years of Tull’s music.

The Jacksonville Music Experience spoke with Barre from his home in England where he shared his take on the mighty Tull.

So what was the impetus for the A Brief History of Tull tour?

It’s sort of a summary, really. I’ve been doing a lot of Tull-themed tours over the last five or six years, and that sort of kick started it, because it was the 50 th anniversary of Tull. And nobody was doing anything at all, there was no get-together, no record company celebration, etc. Nothing was happening and I thought that was a real shame and it’s a big privilege to have been around 50 years. So I sort of stepped in at the deep end and decided to actually do something special.

“The music sort of carries you along. And as long as it’s good music, it won’t owe you anything. It will speak.”

So I re-recorded a load of tracks for a double CD especially for that [anniversary]. We’re playing songs that meant a lot to me over 50 years and they’re very special for me—and just not the obvious songs, not the predictable ones, not the big hits, but just sort of what you might call deep cuts: tracks that are really worth playing and sound great live.

“Aqualung” is surely the band’s most famous track, and for its day, in both lyrics and that diminished-chord riff and progression, it’s a fairly dark tune. Did the band even consider that it might be such a radio hit?

I don’t think so. Because it doesn’t have the format of a hit record: it stops and starts, it and goes all over the place. It’s not formatted to be a hit. It’s the opposite. It’s a piece of music with stops, starts, lows; it has highs, it is loud, (laughs) and is then quiet. “Radio-friendly” was the word in those days, and I thought if anything would be a hit it would be “Hymn 43” or “Cross-Eyed Mary”: things that had continuity. But we’re not a normal band. We were different. We were left of center and our own pathway. So yeah, “Aqualung” was so out on a limb, lyrically, musically, and arrangement-wise yet people liked it? Amazing.

How do you stay invigorated performing these songs live? The compositions are pretty malleable but how do you maintain your enthusiasm and not feel like you’re punching the clock?

Well, I wouldn’t know. I’ve never been in the position where I thought I was punching a clock. (Laughs) So, I’m being a smartass and I’ll say, “I don’t know the answer.” But I do know that if there’s a song I don’t want to play, I’ll give it a rest. Because I don’t have to play anything. I’m representing Jethro Tull but I’m not Jethro Tull. Nobody’s Jethro Tull anymore. It was an entity that’s finished and there is sort of remnants. But really, you know that I think people come and see my band, and they really don’t know what they’re gonna get. So with that in mind, it’s okay. You know what? I don’t play “Aqualung.” That’s fine. I’ve never heard one person go [gruffly] “Play Aqualung!” (Laughs). I’ve played it a lot. It doesn’t matter. I could play it tomorrow, and I’d enjoy it. So I don’t really get fed up with playing it. You don’t because you get so involved with it. The music sort of carries you along. And as long as it’s good music, it won’t owe you anything. It will speak.

You’re very fluent as both an acoustic and electric guitarist. But I think contrary to many of your peers who have mellowed out and decided to play primarily acoustic, it seems like you are going full-Freddie King and actually getting louder and edgier with your playing.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have, because I wasn’t good enough. My Freddie King was rubbish. (Laughs). I was so bad, I left it alone. I just thought you know, leave it to Freddie because he does it better than anybody in the world. But you know I love controlling the guitar and I don’t use pedals. I just play quieter, or play louder on the electric. Same on acoustic: all those nuances that are there in the instrument, if you find them and use them. And I love it. You dig deeper, you get a different sound you back off and play lighter. It’s like any instrument in that there’s so much control that you have. It’s just that there’s a lot of subtlety there.

“Martin is doing his own stuff. He should be having a whale of a time, instead of being embittered about Jethro Tull”: Ian Anderson seemingly rules out the prospect of a ‘Tull reunion with Martin Barre

Anderson doesn't think a reunion with Barre “would make the atmosphere within the band very easy”

Martin Barre and Ian Anderson

Ian Anderson has seemingly ruled out the possibility of a Jethro Tull reunion with former electric guitar player, Martin Barre.

In a new interview with Classic Rock , the Tull frontman discussed the prospect of Barre rejoining the band for future live shows – and it doesn’t seem likely.

“I have no beef with Martin. But if an interview that I saw recently on YouTube is anything to go by, then he seems a very unhappy person,” states Anderson, who is about to go on tour with Jethro Tull. “I don’t think that would make the atmosphere within the band very easy.

“Finally, after many, many, many years in which I had advised him to do so, Martin is doing his own stuff. He’s in charge of his own band, rather than a circumstance in which he is not the songwriter, producer or manager.

“At last he can do things his way. Judging by the amount of shows that he’s playing, he should be having a whale of a time, instead of being embittered about Jethro Tull.”

It's likely the YouTube interview Anderson refers to is the one that occurred last year, when Barre spoke to VRP Rocks (below) about his 2011 departure from the iconic UK prog band.

The departure prompted both musicians to pursue solo careers under their own names, though Anderson later rebadged his own group with the Jethro Tull name in 2017, ahead of a 50th anniversary retrospective tour.

In his VRP Rocks interview, Anderson asserted he remained Jethro Tull’s guitar player , despite Anderson’s rebrand – a move he lamented as “the worst business decision that was ever made in the history of Jethro Tull”.

“I am Jethro Tull's guitar player. I was, I am now, and I always will be,” he stated. “The same as Ian will always be the singer and flute player of Jethro Tull. No band I have will ever be Jethro Tull, it can't be.

“In my mind, there isn't a Jethro Tull. There's Ian's band, there's my band, and we have one person each from the core, important Jethro Tull era.”

Head over to Classic Rock to read the full interview with Ian Anderson – and for more on Barre, check out his 2015 interview with Guitar World , which touches on the time he supported Jimi Hendrix, recording Aqualung and his most beloved guitars.

Jethro Tull’s First Live Album Returns as Expanded Reissue

Jethro Tull ‘s initial live recording, 1978’s Bursting Out , has been remixed by Steven Wilson for an expanded 3CD/3DVD reissue subtitled The Inflated Edition .

Available on June 21, the box includes lots of cool extras in addition to the originally recorded songs from May and June 1978 concerts in Europe during Tull’s tour behind Heavy Horses . Bursting Out: The Inflated Edition is available for preorder now .

“A live extravaganza from the ’70s Jethro Tull, this was recorded over several nights in different venues on a portable 8-track tape recorder and transferred to 2-inch multitrack when I got home after the tours,” Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson said in an official statement. “I had to listen all through to many shows and pick the best live versions. But much of it was, at least, from the concert in Bern, Switzerland, where dear Claude Nobs came to introduce the band in his inimitable style.”

READ MORE: Ranking Every Jethro Tull Album

The complete track listing is below. Among the highlights on The Inflated Edition is the entire 93-minute show from Madison Square Garden, including more than 50 minutes of video which was part of a transatlantic broadcast by the BBC and Radio 1.

“A scary experience for the band as it was, we were told, the first time a live rock concert had been the subject of a live satellite broadcast,” Anderson added. “The band lineup at this time was a fine-tuned machine and, although missing the unwell John Glascock for the MSG show, it serves as a fine testimony for the many wonderful shows we did in the ’70s before general touring fatigue and burn-out began a year or so later. Enjoy vintage Tull at its ’70s best.”

Bursting Out has been previously reissued on compact disc, but the 1990 U.S. version omitted “Quatrain,” “Sweet Dream” and “Conundrum” in order to fit the format’s strict 80-minute limitations.
