journey 2 the mysterious island cast rotten tomatoes

Now streaming on:

"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" looks like nothing so much as one of those live-action adventures that Disney used to grind out in the 1950s — and hey, here's Captain Nemo's Nautilus to prove it. Also, a tree house to humble "Swiss Family Robinson," which contains a short-wave radio that has been assembled from old spoons, I think I heard.

The movie is very, very loosely a sequel to " Journey to the Center of the Earth ," with only two connections: It's inspired by a Jules Verne novel, and it co-stars young Josh Hutcherson as the hero Sean. The film opens with him on a motorcycle and being chased by cops, but not to worry; all he did was break into a satellite-tracking station to boost the power on a message for help sent by his grandfather from a lost island in the Pacific.

Sean, whose father in the first film ( Brendan Fraser ) has disappeared (from the cast, anyway), now has to deal with Hank ( Dwayne Johnson , aka the Rock). Hank is his new stepdad. Josh and Hank make friends by decrypting grandfather's message; Hank glances at it and intuits that the two-syllable words stand for dots and one-syllable words stand for dashes, which means Grandpa has had enough free time on his remote island to figure out a way to make Morse code several times longer than it previously was. Unanswered is why grandfather would encrypt a call for help.

This Hank, what a swell guy. He proposes that the two of them fly off to the Pacific and find Grandpa. On arrival somewhere, they hire a tourist helicopter pilot named Gabato, played by Luis Guzman as another one of those low-comedy guys who gets all worked up and is scared of stuff. (I enjoyed a reprise of this classic shot: Gabato runs toward camera, falls on stomach, looks up …and up … and up.)

Gabato has a daughter named Kailani ( Vanessa Hudgens ), a Polynesian beauty who wears a tank top and Daisy Dukes throughout the film. These four fly off in the helicopter, are trapped in a Force Five hurricane that rips it to pieces and are lucky enough to find themselves alive on the beach of the Mysterious Island.

This is your complete island. It has an active volcano; waterfalls with no apparent water sources streaming down cliffs; elephants the size of dogs, and giant lizards that are nowhere big enough to account for the size of their eggs. (Josh falls through the shell of one, splashes in a pool of yolk and is attacked by an unborn lizard chick.) Also on the island is the lost city of Atlantis, even though it's in the wrong ocean, and bees so big Sean and Kailani can both ride on the back of one. And Alexander Anderson, Sean's grandfather, played by Michael Caine , who will not be editing this role into his videos about how to act in movies.

I hope you understand I enjoyed most of this stuff. The director, Brad Peyton , apparently intended it as a genial parody of countless other movies in this spirit. There is, for example, a scene were Sean, Grandpa, Kailani and Gabato all sit around the old campfire and listen while Hank strums a ukulele and sings "What a Wonderful World." And I mean he sings it: every word of three verses. It's not every day you see the Rock channeling Gene Autry.

Sean deduces that Verne's novel contains everything they need to know, and this comes in handy when the volcano explodes, and the island begins to sink into the sea. Sure enough, Captain Nemo's submarine is still hidden underwater. Hank and Sean, trusting Verne, dive off a high cliff, and while holding their breath and swimming underwater, are able to (1) find the sub, (2) open the hatch by tugging and twisting it, (3) swim inside, (4) push a lever to fill it with air, and (5) get the power generator working by jump-starting it with an electric eel.

This is transcendently goofy. It isn't a "good" movie in the usual sense (or most senses), but it is jolly and good-natured, and Michael Caine and Dwayne Johnson are among the most likable of actors. Johnson is such a good sport, he even shows young Sean how to impress girls by flexing your pecs so quickly that nuts will ricochet off them. I can't think of any reason to pay extra for the 3-D.

Rotten Tomatoes® Score

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island immediately recognizes its audience and, fully accepting its constraints, pleases them with its fabulous drive and its intrinsic linearity. [Full review in Spanish]

There’s nothing about this family-friendly movie that’s outrageously offensive, but there’s nothing about it that’s particularly interesting, well-executed, or inventively conceived either.

...entertaining yet chintzy...

A screenplay that never quite clicks on all cylinders. There are too many scenes dealing with relationships that really halt any momentum.

Journey 2 is simply magical.

Undeniably an exhilarating family friendly, action adventure that'll no doubt thrill younger audiences.

Like its predecessor, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a race against time to survive, but the inclusion of new characters adds a little more interest.

For a family, this is an agreeable Saturday outing, largely because director Brad Peyton doesn't set his sight higher than the material actually is.

"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" is light, airy family entertainment that actually ends up being too light and airy.

It's a harmless, lighthearted film with wooden acting, a nice message about accepting your parents-whoever they are-and again, lots of ridiculous CGI.

SET VISIT: Journey 2: The Mysterious Island - Part 2

We speak with actor Dwayne Johnson and director Brad Peyton on the Hawaiian set of this 3D action-adventure.

Actor Dwayne Johnson :

Did you just come off Fast Five before coming to Hawaii?

Dwayne Johnson : Yes, there really wasn't any break. We scheduled it out. I wrapped Fast Five on Friday, started this on Monday, and I think we blocked out about a week to do press for Faster .

With all the movies you have going on, how do you even have time to prepare for this?

Dwayne Johnson : I had months, actually, to prepare for this, as I was shooting Fast Five and doing press for Faster . I got close with our producers and writers and really had some good time, even though my time was split, with the responsibilities of shooting the other movie. We were in Puerto Rico and Atlanta for Fast Five , so I had the script and was able to prepare in my downtime, which wasn't a lot.

With only one returning cast member, you guys are basically making a very different film than the first one. What was it about the script that go you involved?

Dwayne Johnson : Well, I like the idea of making a big fun adventure type of movie. I read the script and liked it. I thought we had the opportunity to elevate it, to make it bigger and better. I enjoyed the first one. I thought there were elements of the first one that were pretty cool and exciting. With the team we have in place for this one, there were a lot of variables that made it easy.

Was Michael Caine already on the project when you came on board?

Dwayne Johnson : He was not. It was Josh, myself, and I think Michael Caine signed on, and then Vanessa. I love Michael. I've enjoyed my time with him. As an actor, it's an honor to work with him. The word legend and icon come up, when you talk about Michael, and he has certainly earned that. He's just a great guy to be around, a great storyteller. He's a guy's guy, and I can appreciate that.

What do you enjoy about shooting a movie here in Hawaii, which I know is big for you?

Dwayne Johnson : It's great. Not only is it great to bring business here for the economy and local businesses, but, personally, for me, to come back to Hawaii, is very satisfying. I've lived here on two occasions, and I did a lot of growing up here. I think those early teenage years I was here, and I was getting in a lot of trouble, but doing a lot of dreaming. To come back and live the dream, so to speak, it's pretty cool.

What are your long-term goals, as far as your career goes. Do you plan that far ahead?

Dwayne Johnson : The goal is to have the opportunity to work in different genres. This is a great, exciting time in my career, where I have the opportunity to work in different genres. I also recognize there are not a lot of actors who have had that opportunity, and I'm grateful for it, so I like the idea of working in different genres, and transcending genres, and hopefully finding success and make movies that people like.

Do you ever worry that you may mix it up so much that people don't know what to expect from you?

I was on the set of Faster , and we were all exciting that you were getting back into the action genre. This one seems that the action and family aspects blend into one. Would that be a fair assessment of this movie?

Dwayne Johnson : I think so. It's a good infusement... is that a word? (Laughs) Yes, it's a great combination of action, fun, and adventure. And, with the 3D platform, that was a big attraction too, because I've never made a movie that was in 3D. I like the idea that it was written and made specifically for 3D. The first movie was the first generation of James Cameron 's technology he used for Avatar , and now we're the third generation. It's exciting.

Behind the camera, there is obviously a different approach to things in 3D. As a performer, are you seeing any difference in terms of how you see the camera? Is this a different process for you?

Dwayne Johnson : I'm intrigued by the 3D platform, and not only do I think it's fascinating, when you look at how the shots are set up, why they're set up specifically for the audience. There are certain things you have to look at, that I never understood until now, making this type of movie, just in terms of depth, in terms of where they're placed in a scene. There are cool special effects happening, how things are framed, there are a lot of fascinating details that go into it. I think that's why it's so important to have a great director, with a great vision and a sensibility to 3D.

Can you talk about working with Michael Caine ? Was there any intimidation factor in getting to work with him?

Dwayne Johnson : No, to be honest with you. I'm pretty relaxed around everybody. I was very excited to work with him. I had been such a fan for such a long time, that I was just excited to work with him. Every once in a while, you get the opportunity to work with somebody who's really amazing, and can not only help elevate your game, but it's a nice bonus when that person is really wonderful.

After 10 years, are you letting the stuntmen go in and do more of the stunts, or are you getting in there as much as you can?

Dwayne Johnson : I love it. I love doing stunts, as long as it's safe. We have great stunt coordinators, some of the best in the business, and they always provide a safe environment for us to work in. For me personally, if I'm able to do it, and if it adds to the movie, I'll do it.

Do you find there's much that you can't do, though? In terms of stunts?

Dwayne Johnson : Plenty, sure. If they are high-wire work, mixed with green screen or CGI, it's necessary to have your stunt double. I'm very fortunate to have a great stunt double. He's my cousin, and we look like twins. He's been with me since I started.

What's more interesting for you to see in this film in 3D. Huge bumblebees, or Luis Guzmán

What's it like to work with actors who are on the cusp of huge stardom, like Vanessa and Josh? Is it fun to see them where you were, 10 years ago?

Dwayne Johnson : It's an exciting time for them, and I can appreciate that. I can also appreciate the layers of humility that they have, especially for young actors at that age, who are gracious to the crew, and very appreciative and aware of the position they're in. It's great they're able to remain humble, and I see that in both of them.

Lastly, we were able to speak with director Brad Peyton , who is no stranger to the 3D universe. After writing and directing several short films, Brad Peyton made his feature directorial debut with Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore , last year's 3D sequel to Cats and Dogs. Here's what the director had to say below, including his thoughts on which Jules Verne story he'd like to make as a follow-up.

Director Brad Peyton :

What attracted you to a project like this, a sequel with only one returning cast member and a different location, and what did you bring into that room to convince them you were the guy for the job?

Brad Peyton : I really love Jules Verne. I grew up with a mom who only read science-fiction and horror, so there was always that stuff around in my house. All my friends are all sci-fi movie nerds, and we're all into that stuff, so part of it was, when I came into the room, I could talk to them about the difference between H.G. Wells, and how he thought fantasy came from other worlds, and how Jules Verne thought fantasy came from our world. I could talk with that perspective, and I knew Jules Verne had written a couple of entries into the encyclopedia, with all the details and mapping and reality of the world. A big part for me, was not putting the movie on a soundstage, but going to a location where it was real. My attraction to Jules Verne was part of the attraction to the property. I have always wanted to do an adventure story and a survival story. I've always been attracted to an idea of what does it take to get through a bad situation. I guess all of that, and I also had a different visual sensibility when I came into the room. I could talk about things I thought would work in 3D, and how the action could be a lot cooler.

Do you think it was a good idea to come to Hawaii now, with all the rain?

Brad Peyton : It's just a different way of filmmaking. I've always thought of it as, you can either grow a film, or you can design a film. Growing a film, is like you walk into a restaurant and go, 'OK there's movement there, there's light here, this is how I'd block it in this space.' Designing a film is going into a soundstage and saying, 'How big do you want the room? Where should we put the windows?' Part of it was finding a balance between these two things. I wanted to design the shots, but I wanted to grow it from what's given to me. When it rains, you roll with it. Things change, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse, and if it's for the worse, you try to come up with a new concept.

How have the demands of shooting on location, been with shooting in 3D?

Brad Peyton : Tougher. Definitely tougher. I think the equipment, or any kind of technology is strained by bad weather. I think 3D equipment being kind of newer, it's still getting used to this. What we put cameras through, it's not a pretty site. There's a lot of care going into protecting the gear, and it is definitely tougher than being on a soundstage. It's just not as controlled an environment. I can tell you, from the perspective of converting a film to 3D, to shooting a film in 3D, there's no way you can convert this movie. Get a jungle in 3D? You'd have to cut out every leaf. It would take you six months to do a 30-second shot. To me, there was no option. We'll make it work. It's exciting to play with it, and I was looking forward to designing shots for it, but you also know you're not going to get as many set-ups, it's going to be harder to move the gear, it's a little more taxing on the production. I would definitely say that the pros outweigh the cons, 100%.

Your stars are such an interesting mix of different types of actors. What's it been like to have them mesh together for this?

How do you gauge the things that come off the screen in 3D?

Brad Peyton : It's story-dependent. In this movie, you want some stuff to come out at you, just because it's fun, but if it makes sense to the story, you do it, if it doesn't, you don't do it. I've been really lucky to be supported by the producers and the studio to just really do what makes sense, and not go, 'OK, every three minutes... blam!' You just have fun with it in places you should, and don't push your luck when you shouldn't. To be honest, I played it a little conservatively, because I want you to feel the environment, so it's about getting a sense of the space.

Do you look at this more as a franchise you could work on forever?

Brad Peyton : I was very selfish, in the sense that the property of going to the moon was also in the Jules Verne stories, and I've always wanted to make a going to the moon story. That was always in the back of my mind, that I would like to make this one good so that I can go to the moon on the next one. We were very careful in picking our cast, to move forward with that. I felt like this movie will pay respect to the first movie, but will also evolve from the first movie, in the sense of what I was telling you about. It was always a long-term thing. I don't really think short-term.

You have all of these really big names, but it seems that Luis Guzmán seems to steal the show in places. What was it like to bring him on board?

Brad Peyton : Yeah, Luis is the comic relief. I don't know if I'd say he steals the show, but yeah. My expectations of Luis are always high, because he's such a great character actor, and I always thought he would carve out his own space. I think other people would've been like, 'Wow, I didn't expect him to grab that moment,' but I saw that coming. Luis is phenomenal. I actually really connect with Luis , as a person, and really respect Luis . I just appreciate watching him act every day. I just see a guy who really knows how to act. He just really rounded out the cast in a really fun way. He definitely brought that fun element to every scene.

Brad Peyton : Oh, God no. I'm the least funny guy on the set. These people, they prank each other all day long, they make fun of each other all day long, there are just as many laughs off camera, especially with Dwayne . He's such a fun personality. Actually, I can't just say 'especially Dwayne ,' because Josh and Vanessa, all of them. It's just like hanging out with a bunch of fun, happy people. It makes it a lot easier on me, because when I'm off sweating in the corner about getting the camera set up, they're off hanging out laughing.

What made you think of Vanessa in the first place?

Brad Peyton : I wanted the character to be an islander, so I immediately started thinking about the complexion and the look. Vanessa was one of the few younger Hollywood actors, that I knew fit it. When I found out her schedule was open, and it started to become a reality, that's when I got really excited. At the beginning, I was like, 'I don't know, we're not going to be able to get her,' but then I got excited really quickly. I just latched onto it and saw if she'd go for it, and it worked. For me, it was the credibility of acting experience, and a look.

What kinds of things have you discovered about Dwayne , just in working with him?

Brad Peyton : Well, I knew I'd get the physicality out of him, I knew that was coming. I underestimated how charismatic he would be. I knew there would be a certain level of charisma, but I didn't understand that he'd be that powerful. I think he's just a very deep person. I know he does a lot of action stuff, but I think Dwayne has a very deep soul. He's been through a lot in his life, and a lot of forming your character is going through ups and downs. Dwayne has done that, and when he shows up, you can reference really high highs, and really low lows, and he's been through those. He's a very honest person, and that allows him to have a very deep well to act from. I think Dwayne is a really good actor. He really surprises people. When Dwayne wants to get somewhere, he gets there. He doesn't really take no for an answer. That surprised me a little bit.

How excited are you to see this all come together?

Brad Peyton : I'm very excited, because there's going to be so much of it that's going to be built in a computer. As a director, you get a sense of relief every day. You go through it and you go, 'That's great. I like what we did here.' When it all comes together, just seeing the visual effects part of it come together will be great, because it's such a long haul to get there. Every day you get excited, but when you're done shooting you go, 'Please put this all together.'

When I left Waimea Falls Park after a long day on the set, I walked away with quite a lot, including extremely muddy shoes and knowledge of Hawaii's bizarre rain patterns. I also walked away knowing Journey 2: The Mysterious Island should be one hell of an adventure, with a huge cast full of stars in every age range, and a 3D story that takes the adventure genre to whole new heights... on the wings of huge, flying bumblebees. That about wraps up my visit to the set of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , which debuts in theaters nationwide February 10.

Four years after his adventure in the center of the earth , 17-year-old Sean Anderson is arrested by the police for breaking into a satellite control center in hopes of enhancing a coded signal that could have been sent by his long-missing grandfather, Alexander Anderson. Wanting to bond with Sean, his new stepfather Hank Parsons helps decipher the code, which leads to three books: Treasure Island , Gulliver's Travels , and Jules Verne's Mysterious Island . Using the books' individual maps, Hank uses a backlight to make them a single island, complete with the coordinates to its location. Hoping to prove to Sean that there is no mysterious island there, Hank agrees to take him to where the coordiantes point to.

In Palau, Hank reluctantly hires helicopter tourism guide Gabato and his daughter Kailani (on whom Sean develops an immediate crush) to fly to the coordinates, as they are the only ones willing to take them. The helicopter gets caught in a cyclone and they crash into the Pacific, waking up on the island.

Moving inland, they are shocked to discover miniature elephants (which belong to a prehistoric species, the Dwarf sicilian elephant) and giant butterflies. After coming across an egg clutch, Gabato accidentally wakes up a giant frilled lizard, which chases them throughout the jungle. They nearly get eaten, but are saved by Alexander. He takes them to a hut he built from the wreckage of the ship that brought him to the island. He has a working radio, but due to the positioning of the satellite, it will be two weeks before they can call out.

The next morning, Alexander leads the group to the lost city of Atlantis, which rises every 70 years and sinks again after a couple of days. Their only means of salvation seems to be the legendary Nautilus , Captain Nemo's submarine. Kailani enters Nemo's crypt and finds his journal, which shows that Nautilus is in a cave at Poseidon's Cliffs.

To go there, they mount giant bees and fly over a high ridge. When giant bee-eater birds try to devour them, Sean saves Kailani's life, but dislocates his ankle. Hank and Alexander reset Sean's ankle, then the group has a bonding moment when Hank sings his rendition of "What a Wonderful World" to ease Sean's pain.

The next morning, the water rises greatly and Hank deduces that the island will sink in a matter of hours. Gabato is missing, having gone toward the island's volcano in search of gold. While Alexander and Kailani go after him, Sean and Hank head for Poseidon's Cliffs.

To reach Nautilus ' underwater cave, Sean and Hank create makeshift oxygen tanks and dive down fifty feet, but are nearly killed by a giant electric moray eel. The 140-year-old batteries have run down, so they engineer a way to start the submarine with the eel's electricity.

Kailani and Alexander find Gabato and convince him to escape with them instead of trying for the volcano. As they near Poseidon's Cliffs, the volcano erupts. Sean and Hank arrive in Nautilus just in time to rescue the others from the water. Gabato pilots the submarine out of harm's way while Hank and Sean fire torpedoes into the path of falling debris. As they clear the dangers, Kailani kisses Sean for his bravery.

Six months later, Kailani and Gabato are well off, as he runs the most popular tourist attraction on Palau – tours aboard the Nautilus . Kailani visits Sean on his birthday. While the family celebrates, Alexander arrives with a book for Sean's birthday present – Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon , Alexander's suggestion for the next new adventure with the family.

Production [ ]

After the commercial success of the first film, New Line Cinema and Walden Media purchased Richard Outten 's spec script, Mysterious Travels , in March 2009 to serve as the basis for the film. In the story, the characters embark on a journey to a mysterious uncharted island thought to have inspired the writing of three literary classics: Robert Louis Stevenson 's Treasure Island , Jonathan Swift 's Gulliver's Travels , and Jules Verne 's Mysterious Island . Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn were chosen to revise Outten's script. Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema announced that Journey 2: The Mysterious Island would be released on February 10, 2012.

Casting [ ]

Josh Hutcherson was the only actor to reprise his role. Due to scheduling issues, Brendan Fraser and Anita Briem did not return. Kristin Davis replaced Jane Wheeler as Sean's mother Liz. Dwayne Johnson played Sean's stepfather, who is forced to accompany Sean on the trip to find his missing grandfather Alexander (played by Michael Caine ) on a mythical and monstrous island. [7] Vanessa Hudgens was cast as Hutcherson's love interest, Kailani.

Short film [ ]

The theatrical release of the film was preceded by a Looney Tunes short film titled Daffy's Rhapsody , featuring Daffy Duck and Elmer Fudd in the first CG or 3-D depiction of these specific Looney Tunes characters. The short film's director, Matthew O'Callaghan, noted that " Daffy Rhapsody was originally recorded in the early 1950s as part of a kids' album". Unlike the earlier CG Looney Tunes shorts that appeared before Happy Feet Two and Yogi Bear , this short did not appear on the home video release of the film it accompanied.

In August 2014, Carey Hayes and Chad Hayes were announced to write the script for a third film. [21] Brad Peyton and Dwayne Johnson were expected to direct and star in the sequel, respectively. [22] It was later stated that there would be two sequels. [23] By January 2018 however, Johnson stated despite the financial success of The Mysterious Island , and although a third film titled Journey from the Earth to the Moon was intended, its development had been cancelled due to a lack of immediate interest and troubles in adequately adapting the novel. [24] Despite this, reports from Hollywood production insiders arose in August 2020, stating that a sequel was once again in development. In December 2021, Hiram Garcia confirmed that Warner Bros. Pictures wants a sequel film, though Seven Bucks Productions decided to delay development in favor of pursuing other projects. [25]

Total Recall

Luis guzman's best movies, we count down the best-reviewed work of the journey 2: the mysterious island star..

journey 2 the mysterious island cast rotten tomatoes

Ready or not, it’s time for another 3D Journey . Only this time instead of Brendan Fraser making his way to the center of the earth, we’ve got Dwayne Johnson muscling to the shores of The Mysterious Island in the company of Michael Caine, Vanessa Hudgens, and the inimitable Luis Guzmán — who’s been stealing scenes throughout his career, and now gets his first chance to upstage some giant bees. In honor of Luis’ latest role, we dedicate this week’s list to the best films in a résumé filled with memorable moments. It’s time for Total Recall!

10. The Count of Monte Cristo

For its tenth adaptation, Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel received a bit of a facelift — and, as is their wont, a number of critics were fairly cheesed about the storyline alterations and beefed-up action that director Kevin Reynolds and screenwriter Jay Wolpert brought to the tale. For most, however, the most crucial elements of the story remained intact — namely, the injustice endured by a French sailor (James Cavizel) who is betrayed and sent to prison by his supposed friend (Pearce), only to escape and pursue vengeance with the aid of his trusty sidekick (Guzmán). As Peter Bradshaw put it in his review for the Guardian, “Dumas’s classic tale is such a rattling good yarn, there’s nothing you can do to derail it as it hurtles down the track.”

9. The Hard Way

Its plot reads like a high-concept parody (spoiled, wisecracking actor gloms onto hard-boiled cop while researching a role… and gets more than he bargained for! ), but John Badham’s The Hard Way is better than you might think — if only because it plays so squarely to its stars’ strengths. As the pampered Nick Lang, Michael J. Fox gets to use his squirrelly energy and sharp comic timing; as John Moss, the perpetually exasperated NYPD detective saddled with Lang, James Woods is a tightly wound bundle of volcanic, barely suppressed rage. (Guzmán appears as a fellow detective who works as a sort of Jiminy Cricket, trying to keep Woods from going too far off the reservation.) While acknowledging that it was “just another version of the reliable old cop partner movie,” Roger Ebert praised the end result as “funny, fun, exciting, and, when you look beneath the glossy surface, an example of professionals who know their crafts and enjoy doing them well.”

8. Carlito’s Way

If you’re looking to make a visually stylish gangster epic, you could certainly do worse than hiring Brian De Palma to direct — and when casting the aging ex-con who wants to leave his criminal lifestyle behind, you could hardly do better than Al Pacino. Case in point: Carlito’s Way , which adapts a pair of Judge Edwin Torres novels about the title character’s doomed dreams of a new life. Ultimately earning a pair of Golden Globes nominations for Sean Penn and Penelope Ann Miller, Carlito’s offered Guzmán another memorable supporting role and surrounded him with another stellar cast and crew. “De Palma and Pacino tread some very familiar ground,” admitted eFilmCritic’s Brian McKay. “But while it all feels a bit recycled at times, it still works.”

7. Punch-Drunk Love

After picking up roles in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights and Magnolia , Guzmán returned for Anderson’s third outing — but unlike the first two, Punch-Drunk Love is more of a quiet character study than a sprawling ensemble piece. Here, Guzmán stars as the supportive friend and employee of novelty warehouse owner Barry Egan (Adam Sandler), whose painfully earnest quest for love takes some memorably surreal turns (including a bizarre, unforgettable showdown with some tire iron-wielding lunatics and their boss, a psychotic mattress vendor played by Anderson mainstay Philip Seymour Hoffman). It remains what Entertainment Weekly’s Owen Gleiberman ruefully prophesied would be “the most sincere and artful movie in which Adam Sandler will probably ever appear.”

6. Q & A

The film that Guzmán credits with putting him on the map as a character actor, Sidney Lumet’s Q&A offered him a pivotal supporting role in an impeccably acted drama about the unbearably tense conflict between a corrupt cop (Nick Nolte), the officer investigating him (Timothy Hutton), and the crime boss with ties to them both (Armand Assante). While admitting that its themes had been visited many times by other filmmakers — and repeatedly by Lumet — ReelViews’ James Berardinelli noted, “ Q & A is testimony to the validity of the old adage: a good story, when well told, can never be told too many times.”

5. Magnolia

Emboldened by the success of Boogie Nights , writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson increased his scope for the follow-up, 1999’s wildly ambitious Magnolia . Indulgent in pretty much every respect (not least its three-hour running time), Anderson’s magnum opus was grounded by its crowded cast, which included Tom Cruise, Philip Baker Hall, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jason Robards, William H. Macy, Julianne Moore… really, the list goes on and on. It goes on so long, in fact, that Guzmán had only a small role — but as always, it was a memorable one: an obnoxious version of himself. Argued Michael Wilmington for the Chicago Tribune, “The more you think about Magnolia — the dry wit, the bravura staging, the intricate design, the wondrous performances — the better and more unusual the film seems.”

4. Boogie Nights

Guzmán started acting in the late 1970s, and accumulated an impressive stack of “that guy” roles as a busy character actor throughout the 1980s — but his film career really started to take off in the 1990s, when he became a favorite actor for directors Steven Soderbergh and Paul Thomas Anderson. Guzmán’s first Anderson production, Boogie Nights , helped free him from a lifetime of playing cops and gangsters by casting him as the flamboyant manager of a nightclub where struggling high school dropout Eddie Adams (Mark Wahlberg) begins his transformation into legendary porn star Dirk Diggler. One of the best-reviewed films of the year, Nights earned praise from critics like Janet Maslin of the New York Times, who wrote, “Everything about Boogie Nights is interestingly unexpected, even the few seconds of darkness before the film’s neon title blasts onto the screen.”

3. The Limey

After stealing his few onscreen moments in Steven Soderbergh’s Out of Sight , Guzmán scored a bigger role in the director’s next project. Starring Terence Stamp as a British ex-con who goes on the warpath after learning of his daughter’s death, The Limey makes up for its short running time and slender script with hard-hitting violence and some thoroughly compelling performances (including Guzmán as a friend of Stamp’s daughter and Peter Fonda as her boyfriend); while it didn’t make much of an impact at the box office, it impressed critics like Edward Guthmann of the San Francisco Chronicle, who called it “A first-rate crime thriller and further proof that director Stephen Soderbergh is one of our great contemporary film stylists.”

Guzmán has been part of some mighty fine ensemble casts in his day, and arguably none of them have been finer than the impressive array of talent Steven Soderbergh lined up for 2000’s Traffic . Nestled between Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Don Cheadle, Benicio del Toro, Dennis Quaid, and others, Guzmán helped anchor Soderbergh’s sprawling look at the American drug trade with a fine performance in a film full of them. “In compelling terms, it puts bitter economic, social and racial truth before our eyes,” wrote Susan Stark of the Detroit News. “Continue to blink or see. Your choice.”

1. Out of Sight

The first of Guzmán’s three films with Steven Soderbergh, Out of Sight found the director pulling what would become a familiar trick: using a spectacular cast (including George Clooney, Jennifer Lopez, Albert Brooks, and Don Cheadle) to tell what could have, in the wrong hands, been a relatively unremarkable story. Adapting Elmore Leonard’s hit novel, Sight follows the adventures of a U.S. Marshal (Lopez) drawn into the orbit of a charismatic crook (Clooney) on his quest for one last score after he takes advantage of a fellow inmate’s (Guzmán, in a small but memorable role) plan to escape from prison. Observed Kenneth Turan for the Los Angeles Times, “As always with the best of Leonard, it’s the journey, not the destination, that counts, and director Soderbergh has let it unfold with dry wit and great skill.”

Surely the silliest outing for Caine since he swatted rampaging killer bees in the 1978 disaster flick "The Swarm."

"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" is light, airy family entertainment that actually ends up being too light and airy.

It's a harmless, lighthearted film with wooden acting, a nice message about accepting your parents-whoever they are-and again, lots of ridiculous CGI.

The only defense for this movie is to say that it's not actually 'trying' to be good ... Are we supposed to applaud just because they set the bar low and barely reached it?

It definitely has its appeal to the crowd it's pandering toward, and it's a success in its mission to bring the awe and thrills.

But Journey 2 delivers a flashy and eye opening adventure product, with each cast member stepping forward to steal particular scenes.

The whole movie has such an air of giddy adventure that I had a good time with it. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is charming, in spite of its imperfections.

Visually rich with lavish sets and fun movie monsters, but Journey 2 is about as underdeveloped and hollow as assembly-line filmmaking can get.

...a family adventure aimed squarely at children. For kids, it's fine; they'll probably enjoy all the color, action, and preposterous goings-on.

Panders to the kiddies, caters to the teens, and tosses in a loser-ethnic-sidekick. The shrugging tone of this 21st-century sabotage of the original novel is summed up by this slogan masquerading as dialogue: 'It's Jules Verne, man-ya gotta believe.'

Falls far short of cinematic art but goes down pretty well with a box of popcorn and modest expectations.

Amusingly childish...

Audience Reviews for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

Yes, it's full of over the top action, unlikely coincidents and silly one-liners, but you gotta give the movie credit for the pace it's keeping up. And as a kid I would have loved this entertaining adventure on an island full of monsters, animals and old temples. It's all about the target audience, after all.

Slightly silly title but if you're unaware this is the sequel to the 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth' remake starring Brendan Fraser. Pretty much the same thing accept swap Fraser with Dwayne Johnson playing Hutcherson's stepfather for this adventure. The title is also a clever cross over with Jules Verne's other fantasy novel 'The Mysterious Island'. So it reads...'Journey 2' (as in part 2, the sequel), 'The Mysterious Island'...I say clever but...never mind. Lots of the expected really, you can't really fail to know what your gonna see here, big bugs, volcanoes, sea beasties, lost gold, deep thick jungles and Michael Caine playing your typical bearded oldboy intrepid adventurer...think along the lines of Connery in 'The Last Crusade'. Despite that it is good fun if you enjoy light-hearted fantasy much like the original 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth' film. It is of course totally daft how Johnson and Hutcherson know how to pilot Captain Nemo's Nautilus, hijack large bumblebees and ride them like speeder bikes and Johnson throwing a spear underwater but hey!...you overlook these things. Enjoyable stuff and hopefully a third on the way, maybe a little less focus on Johnson though this time, he's admittedly a funny guy but boy does he love being the centre of attention.

phubbs1

Journey to ridiculous. But nice visuals/SFX. The Rock delivers the same crappola performance he's famous for...sadly.

"I watched this movie some time ago but forgot to write my thoughts about it down. So I thought I would do so before I forget again. I guess me forgetting isn't really a good sign for the movie. As I remember it was a little funny and entertaining enough. I liked some of the actor's so that helped. I think it was a bit on the cheesy side. But still tolerable. This is good for the kids. They enjoyed it much more than I did which is understandable since it speaks their language of cheese. Something I wouldn't watch again but probably will. It's what happens when you have a child. Not always a blessing is it, when you have to sit through horrid films numerous times. LOL Of course I'm kidding... their all blessings.... lol

A sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008), the film is based on Jules Verne 's The Mysterious Island (1875). It stars Dwayne Johnson , Michael Caine , Josh Hutcherson , Vanessa Hudgens , Luis Guzmán , and Kristin Davis . The storyline was written by Richard Outten , Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, and the screenplay by Brian and Mark Gunn.

Theatrical release

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was released in cinemas on February 10, 2012, by Warner Bros. Pictures , New Line Cinema and Walden Media to mixed reviews, but was a box office success with a worldwide gross of $335 million, surpassing its predecessor. [3] It was released on DVD/Blu-ray on June 5, 2012.

Four years after his adventure in the center of the earth , 17-year-old Sean Anderson is arrested by the police for breaking into a satellite control center in hopes of enhancing a coded signal that could have been sent by his long-missing grandfather, Alexander Anderson.

Wanting to bond with Sean, his new stepfather Hank Parsons helps decipher the code, which leads to three books: Treasure Island , Gulliver's Travels , and Jules Verne 's Mysterious Island . Using the books' individual maps, Hank uses a backlight to make them a single island, complete with the coordinates to its location. Hoping to prove to Sean that there is no mysterious island there, Hank convinces Sean's mother, Liz, to let him take Sean to where the coordinates point to.

In Palau , Hank reluctantly hires helicopter tourism guide Gabato and his daughter Kailani (on whom Sean develops an immediate crush) to fly to the coordinates, as they are the only ones willing to take them. The helicopter gets caught in a cyclone and they crash into the Pacific, waking up on the island.

Moving in land, they are shocked to discover miniature elephants (which belong to a prehistoric species, the Dwarf sicilian elephant ) and giant butterflies, meaning the animal sizes are opposite. After coming across an egg clutch, Gabato accidentally wakes up a giant frilled lizard , which chases them throughout the jungle.

They nearly get eaten, but are saved by Alexander. He takes them to a hut he built from the wreckage of the ship that brought him to the island. He has a working radio, but due to the positioning of the satellite, it will be two weeks before they can call out.

The next morning, Alexander leads the group to the lost city of Atlantis , which rises every 70 years and sinks again after a couple of days. Although Alexander assures them the island won't sink for many years, Hank discovers sea water coming from underground, meaning they only have days before the island sinks. Their only means of salvation seems to be the legendary Nautilus , Captain Nemo 's submarine. Kailani enters Nemo's crypt and finds his journal, which shows that Nautilus is in a cave at Poseidon 's Cliffs.

To go there, they mount giant bees and fly over a high ridge. When giant bee-eater birds try to devour them, Sean saves Kailani's life, but dislocates his ankle. Hank and Alexander reset Sean's ankle, then the group has a bonding moment when Hank sings his rendition of " What a Wonderful World " to ease Sean's pain.

The next morning, the water rises greatly and Hank deduces that the island will sink in a matter of hours. Gabato is missing, having gone toward the island's volcano in search of gold. While Alexander and Kailani go after him, Sean and Hank head for Poseidon's Cliffs.

To reach Nautilus ' underwater cave, Sean and Hank create makeshift oxygen tanks and dive down fifty feet, but are nearly killed by a giant electric moray eel . The 140-year-old batteries have run down, so they engineer a way to start the submarine with the eel's electricity.

Kailani and Alexander find Gabato and convince him to escape with them instead of trying to take some volcano gold.

Liz protests, but Hank says, "Oh honey, it's only the moon. What could possibly go wrong?" The film ends with the camera panning to the moon.

[5] Vanessa Hudgens was cast as Hutcherson's love interest, Kailani.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island grossed $103.9 million in North America and $231.4 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $335.3 million, against a production budget of $79 million [6] surpassing its predecessor . [7] [8] In North America, the film earned a $6.54 million on its debut Friday, ranking fourth at the box office. [9] Over the weekend, it earned $27.3 million, coming in third place, much higher than the original's $21.0 million debut. [10] Outside North America, Journey 2 began its run three weeks before its North American release. [11] It topped the box office outside North America for two consecutive weekends [12] and three in total. [13] It surpassed the original's total outside North America. [14] Its highest-grossing region after North America was China ($58.4 million), [15] followed by Russia and the CIS ($17.6 million) and Mexico ($12.7 million). [16]

On Rotten Tomatoes , the film has an approval percentage of 45% based on 133 reviews and an average rating of 5.00 out of 10. The critics consensus states: "Aggressively unambitious, Journey 2 might thrill tween viewers, but most others will find it too intense for young audiences and too cartoonishly dull for adults." [17] On Metacritic , the film has a score of 41 out of 100 based on 27 critic reviews, indicating "mixed or average". [18] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A−" on an A+ to F scale. [19]

Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly gave the film a B grade, stating that "the movie flies by pleasantly, and is then instantly forgettable. Perhaps Jules Verne can explain the science of that". [ citation needed ] Randy Cordova from the Arizona Republic said: "Johnson can't save the movie, directed by Brad Peyton, from being a sloppy skip from one seemingly unrelated idea to the next". [ citation needed ] Roger Ebert , who gave the first film two stars, gave the sequel two-and-a-half stars, stating: "It isn't a "good" movie in the usual sense (or most senses), but it is jolly and goodnatured, and Michael Caine and Dwayne Johnson are among the most likable of actors". In August 2014, Carey Hayes and Chad Hayes were announced to write the script for a third film. [21] Brad Peyton and Dwayne Johnson were expected to direct and star in the sequel, respectively. [22] It was later stated that there would be two sequels. [23] By January 2018 however, Johnson stated despite the financial success of The Mysterious Island , and although a third film titled Journey 3: from the Earth to the Moon (based on the 1865 novel ) was intended, its development had been cancelled due to a lack of immediate interest and troubles in adequately adapting the novel. [25]

The Big Picture

  • Season 2 of Severance has completed production, exciting fans who loved the first season's unique premise and captivating storyline.
  • Lead actor Tramell Tillman has joined Mission: Impossible, showcasing the talent and versatility of the Severance cast members.
  • With a 97% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the anticipation for Season 2's release date on Apple TV+ is at an all-time high.

One of Apple TV 's biggest hits of the last several years just got one step closer to returning to screens worldwide. Key costumer Carol Deelay shared a photo on her personal Instagram announcing that Severance Season 2 has wrapped production. This news comes less than 24 hours after one of the show's biggest stars, Tramell Tillman , officially joined the cast of the next Mission: Impossible film . The series recently began filming at the end of January , meaning it completed principal photography in under two months. Severance premiered in February 2022 and boasts a nearly flawless critics rating of 97% and an impressive 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes .

Severance received 14 nominations at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, and won two, for Outstanding Music Composition in a Series ( Theodore Shapiro ) and Outstanding Main Title Design ( Oliver Latta , Teddy Blanks ). Adam Scott , John Turturro , and Christopher Walken were all nominated for performances, and Ben Stiller earned a nomination for his work directing the series. Creator Dan Erickson was also recognized with a nomination for his writing work, and the series was also acknowledged in other categories such as casting, editing, and even Outstanding Drama. While many of the awards ultimately went to either Succession or Squid Game , Severance still made itself known as a formidable competitor in the Drama category. Now that Succession has concluded its final season, the door is open for Severance to take its place as the next show to sweep the Television Academy Awards.

What Do We Know About ‘Severance’ Season 2?

Severance Season 2 dealt with major delays in early 2023 before finally beginning production and having to stop shortly after due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes . The series was renewed shortly before the Season 1 Finale aired on Apple TV+, but the volume of setbacks in the following months was alarming. Little is known about the plot for Severance Season 2, but Scott is confirmed to return as Mark Scout along with Britt Lower , Zach Cherry , and Turturro. Jen Tullock , Tramell, Walken, and Dichen Lachman are also expected to be back in Season 2. The series additionally cast Gwendoline Christie , John Noble , Bob Balaban , and more for new roles in the second season.

What Is 'Severance' Season 1 About?

Severance Season 1 follows Mark Scout (Scott) as he helms a team full of office workers at the biotech company Lumon whose memories have been completely split between work and pleasure. The series is an intense examination of how people would behave if their work and home lives were kept entirely separate from one another. From the outside looking in, Severance can appear as a corporate office drama in the same vein as Succession , but its true nature as a dystopian sci-fi and psychological thriller becomes apparent quickly after pressing play on the first episode.

There is no official release date for Severance Season 2 at this time. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates. Severance Season 1 is streaming now on Apple TV+.

Mark leads a team of office workers whose memories have been surgically divided between their work and personal lives. When a mysterious colleague appears outside of work, it begins a journey to discover the truth about their jobs.

Season 2 of the Netflix live-action One Piece adaptation is on the way, and there's already plenty of cast, story, and release date news when it comes to what's next for Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates. Based on the One Piece manga and anime, the live-action Netflix show tells the story of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates. The first season saw Luffy get the gang together — despite Zoro and Nami's initial hesitation — and set out to find Gold Roger's treasure, the One Piece, on the Grand Line.

Since it's based on the manga and anime by Eiichiro Oda, there's already much to discuss for the next season of One Piece on Netflix. The live-action One Piece season 2 would follow the events from the first, which covered the manga's East Blue Saga. Monkey D. Luffy has sworn to become a great pirate, and by the end of One Piece season 1 is on the way to achieving his goals by getting his own wanted poster, ship, and crew. One Piece season 2 follows the next arc in the manga and anime, the Arabasta Saga, showing the first legs of the Straw Hat Pirates' journey to the Grand Line.

A Filming Window Is Revealed

It's clear that Netflix is prioritizing the series and attempting to rush production a lot more than many of their other flagship shows which are still languishing between seasons.

After months of silence regarding the anime adaptation's sophomore season, the latest news confirms the shooting start date for One Piece season 2 . Renewed back in September 2023, One Piece will now begin filming in June 2024 with a lengthy production period that will stretch into January 2025 . Though no release date has been set yet, It's clear that Netflix is prioritizing the series and attempting to rush production a lot more than many of their other flagship shows which are still languishing between seasons.

More Straw Hat Madness Is Coming Soon

Netflix has renewed One Piece for season 2. The confirmation came in September 2023, two weeks after the show's premiere. Netflix renewing One Piece for another season was somewhat unsurprising , though the news was still incredibly well received. One Piece received incredibly positive reviews and has been a hit with subscribers, sitting at 82 percent on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and the audience score is even higher at 94 percent.

Netflix's One Piece dropped all episodes of season 1 on August 31, 2023.

Filming Begins In June 2024

Though the news has been rather thin since the show was renewed in September 2023, it has now been revealed that One Piece season 2 goes into production in June 2024 and will wrap in January 2025. The visual effects-heavy series will probably have an extended post-production period, meaning the earliest the sophomore season could premiere would be in the latter months of 2025.

The Straw Hat Crew Returns

The Netflix One Piece season 2 cast will most likely bring back characters from the first season in the main roles. Captaining the Going Merry in the One Piece cast as Monkey D. Luffy is Iñaki Godoy, alongside Mackenyu Arata as his second-in-command, Roronoa Zoro. Emily Rudd portrays the ship’s navigator, Nami, and Jacob Romero Gibson plays the crew’s sniper Usopp. Finally, Taz Skylar takes on the role of the chef, Sanji.

Also expected to return in season 2 are Vincent Regan as Garp, Morgan Davies as Koby, Aidan Scott as Helmeppo, Jeff Ward as Buggy, and Ilia Isorelýs Paulino as Alvida. There will also be a lot of new characters that the next season of the live-action One Piece adaptation will need new actors to fill. There are still 3 Straw Hat Pirates due to join the crew in season 2 — Chopper, Nico Robin, and Jinbe (although Jinbe's appearance may not be until after the next season).

The presumptive cast of One Piece season 2 includes:

One Piece: How Netflix's Live-Action Cast Compares To The Anime

The arabasta saga in live-action.

The Netflix One Piece season 2 story is likely to follow the events from the Manga series. The first season followed the East Blue Saga and then went into some of the Loguetown Arc. I t looks like the live-action One Piece season 2 story will probably finish off the Loguetown Arc and then continue on to the Arabasta Saga , which is the second saga of the Manga following the East Blue Saga. When it comes to finishing off the Loguetown Arc, the Straw Hats will have to battle Captain Smoker, which was teased in the season 1 finale but also have to fight off enemies wanting the bounty. Monkey D. Dragon is also introduced here.

As for the Arabasta Saga, this had 117 chapters, so it is unclear how much would appear in the Netflix One Piece season 2 story . Of course, the East Blue Saga was 100 chapters and only has the last section remaining to play out. As for big moments that the Straw Hats could face, these include their ship getting swallowed by a giant whale , the introduction of Mr. 9 and Ms. Wednesday (both from Baroque Works), an island full of dinosaurs, and the eventual introduction of the evil Baroque Works leader Crocodile, who is part of a massive civil war in Arabasta.

One Piece (Live-Action)

Based on the popular manga/anime series, One Piece is a live-action Netflix adaptation of the story from Eiichiro Oda. The show follows the exploits of a band of pirates, the Straw Hats, led by the energetic and adventure-loving Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy is a young man cursed with strange powers after accidentally eating a mysterious fruit. With his friends Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji, Luffy will head across the vast ocean to find the legendary treasure, the One Piece.

New on Netflix in May 2024 — all the new shows and movies to watch

I t’s almost the start of a new month, so it's time to take a look at all the new movies and TV shows set to arrive on Netflix in May 2024.

The biggest new edition is the return of the romantic period drama “Bridgerton." The hugely popular Netflix original series is back with the first part of its third season on May 16, and will no doubt lead to us all speaking with a posh English accent for days after bingeing. Other top TV show picks this month include true crime-inspired thriller “Bodkin” and new episodes of the glossy reality show “Selling the OC.”

If you’re in the mood for a movie, Netflix has plenty to offer. There’s a rom-com pairing Brooke Shields with Miranda Cosgrove as a mother-daughter duo, and “Unfrosted” which is a ridiculous-looking spoof from Jerry Seinfeld about the creation of the humble Pop-Tart — yes, this is a real movie debuting on the streaming service this month and not an out-of-season April Fools joke.

It’s set to be a busy month for new arrivals on Netflix and to make sure you don’t miss anything we’ve got a full guide below. There’s also a list of what’s leaving in May so you have a final chance to watch before they’re gone for good (or at least, gone for now).

New on Netflix in May 2024: Top picks

'a man in full'.

Based on the best-selling novel by Tom Wolfe, “A Man in Full” sees Jeff Daniels play a real estate mogul named Charlie Croker who faces sudden bankruptcy and must defend his crumbling empire from politicians and businessmen looking to capitalize now they smell blood in the water. Croker is a crude and rude tycoon who doesn’t plan to fall from grace without a fight and is ready to deploy every dirty trick to protect what he has built. The limited series will also star Diane Lane, Lucy Liu, Tom Pelphrey and William Jackson Harper. This six-episode drama comes from Dave E. Kelley who also created “Big Little Lies” for HBO and “The Lincoln Lawyer“ for Netflix.

Stream on Netflix from May 2

'Selling the OC' season 3

“Selling the OC” is back for its third season with the agents of The Oppenheim Group’s Orange County office ready to compete for the top listing in the cut-throat world of luxury real estate all over again. Of course, these brokers won’t just be attempting to sell multi-million dollar houses in sun-soaked California, expect more office drama as these workers definitely don’t leave their personal lives at the door. This spin-off from “Selling Sunset” has become just as popular as its parent series, and the return of “Selling the OC” is sure to be the month’s highlight for many Netflix subscribers. If you want even more reality TV set in the world of real estate, be sure to check out “Buying London” which is also set to land on Netflix in May (date TBC).

'Unfrosted'

When I first heard about “Unfrosted,” I assumed it was a gag rather than a real movie, but nope, this comedy about the race to win the breakfast war between Kellogg’s and Post in the 1960s is totally legit. Directed, co-written by and starring Jerry Seinfeld, “Unfrosted” is a hilarious spoof of movies like “Blackberry” and “Air”. It chronicles the creation of the Pop-Tart, a "revolutionary" toaster pastry that is still enjoyed by families across the world to this day. Seinfeld has assembled a comedy super cast for this ridiculously silly flick with plenty of very funny people joining him including Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Hugh Grant, Peter Dinklage, Bill Burr, Dan Levy, James Marsden and Max Greenfield.

'Bodkin'

Inspired by our society's current true crime obsession, but based on an original idea rather than a true story, “Bodkin” sees a group of podcasters travel to a seemingly idyllic town in the gorgeous Irish countryside to investigate a string of strange disappearances that occurred decades previously. Once the true crime investigators arrive on the scene they quickly realize there’s something more sinister hiding beneath the surface and are drawn into a twisting mystery. A dark thriller, with comedic elements (Though creator Jez Scharf is keen to stress it’s “not a comedy”), Bodkin stars Will Forte, Siobhán Cullen, and Robyn Cara.

'Mother of the Bride'

From Mark Waters, the director of “Mean Girls” and “Freaky Friday”, comes a new romantic comedy starring Brooke Shields and Miranda Cosgrove alongside Benjamin Bratt and Chad Michael Murray. In this glossy flick, Lana (Shields) is stunned when her daughter Emma (Cosgrove) returns from a trip aboard with the news she’s getting married, in Thailand, in a month. If the shock engagement wasn’t enough to process, Lana is even more blind-sighted when she learns that Emma’s fiancé is the son of the man who broke her heart years earlier. Traveling to the destination wedding, what follows is several awkward encounters and maybe even a second chance at finding love. “Mother of the Bride” looks very cliché but also great fun.

‘Bridgerton’ season 3 (part 1)

For fans of Netflix’s hugely popular period drama, the wait is almost over, it’s time to break out your best fine China afternoon tea set as “Bridgerton” is (nearly) back after a hiatus of more than two years. “Bridgerton” season 3 will be released in two parts, with the first four episodes arriving in May, and the second half of the third season dropping in June. There will be plenty of juicy drama this season encompassing the entire cast but the big focus will be on Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgeton (Luke Newtown), and there’s more than friendship brewing between this wallflower and the dashing world traveler. If you’ve yet to sample the delights of “Bridgerton” now is a good time to get caught up before May 16.

Stream on Netflix from May 16

Move over “Rebel Moon” there’s a new blockbuster science-fiction epic in town and it’s called “Atlas”. This action movie stars Jennifer Lopez as Atlas Shepherd, a brilliant but unsociable data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence. She signs up to join a mission to the stars to capture a rebellious robot that is linked to her mysterious past. But when the mission takes a turn, Atlas is forced to trust AI to help her save all of humanity. Expect a fast-paced plot, and some timely themes, as well as a satisfying message about the importance of trusting others and letting your guard down. I'm not totally sold yet but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that “Atlas” is a little better received by critics than Zack Snyder’s aforementioned sci-fi flop.

  17. 'Journey 3' on the Way After Success of 'Mysterious Island'

When New Line said they were making Journey 2: The Mysterious Island we were (understandably) skeptical. The first film - a.k.a. the Brendan Fraser-starring Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D - might've been a financial success ($240 million on a $60 million budget), but it wasn't exactly adored by critics, and if history was any indicator, the sequel was likely to pale in comparison.
