What Are Essential Oils? A Complete Guide on Aromatherapy and Its Potential Health Benefits

Lauren Bedosky

Here, we explain what essential oils are, how they work, their potential health benefits, safety considerations, and how to find quality oils.

History of Essential Oils

How essential oils are derived and how they work.

When inhaled, the molecules in essential oils travel up the nose and interact with scent receptors, which stimulates the olfactory nerve that connects to the brain.

“The oil itself doesn’t go up into the brain, but it stimulates a response that typically affects different aspects of the brain and the central nervous system, specifically in regions called the limbic system. This system has a lot to do with arousal, memory, and processing emotions,” says Michelle Davila, ND , a naturopathic doctor with the integrative medicine department of Beaumont Health in Grosse Pointe and Royal Oak, Michigan.

Essential oils also create certain effects when applied to the skin. “Because of their low molecular weight and the fact that they’re fat-soluble, essential oils can get into the bloodstream and affect different aspects of our overall health,” Dr. Davila explains.

“But whether you use aromatherapy through the olfactory nerve [or the lungs], or through absorption [via] the skin, the effects are fairly similar,” she adds.

They’re also used by doctors, nurses, chiropractors, acupuncturists, holistic healthcare providers, and dentists, notes  Shanti Dechen , a certified clinical aromatherapy practitioner and licensed massage therapist, who is director of Aroma Apothecary Healing Arts Academy in Crestone, Colorado.

However, many organizations offer education and certification programs. The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) is an educational nonprofit organization that has created guidelines for aromatherapy certification programs. Check that your aromatherapist has received training from a NAHA-approved aromatherapy school .

Ways to Breathe In Essential Oils

Aroma stick, dry evaporation, essential oil application to the skin.

Another common method of using essential oils is to apply them directly to the skin through a massage, bath, or skincare product. However, it’s important to note that most essential oils should not be applied directly to the skin without being diluted first.

Typically, topical essential oils are mixed with a carrier oil like jojoba, castor, or avocado oil to aid absorption, provide additional vitamins, and safeguard your skin against allergic reactions.

“Carrier oils make essential oils a lot safer, because what they’ve found over years of research is that if you apply an essential oil [that’s] undiluted, it will create allergic reactions in many people over time,” Dechen says.

Can I Eat or Vape Essential Oils?

Essential oils can also theoretically be ingested or vaped, but experts warn that these approaches can be very dangerous, and to steer clear.

“Ingesting essential oils in water or capsules is something that requires advanced knowledge and training to do,” Davila says. Typically, the drink or capsule has to be specially formulated and diluted to the proper degree. What’s more, you have to know how much to ingest and for how long, and which ones are safe. Ingesting essential oils the wrong way can irritate your esophagus and stomach, or worse, be toxic, Davila warns.

According to Dechen, drinking essential oils in a glass of that water will send the molecules right into the membranes of your mouth. “Over time, it [can] create scar tissue and irritation,” she says.

Vaping — inhaling and exhaling a vapor via a vape pen, similar to an e-cigarette device — is also a potentially dangerous approach to using essential oils. “Currently there’s no real research available on the effects of vaping essential oils,” Dechen says. And while essential oils are generally considered safe for inhalation, heating them with the metal coil inside the vape pen has the potential to change their chemistry and become toxic when inhaled into the mouth, throat, and lungs, she says. Bottom line, do not vape essential oils.

Possible Health Benefits of Essential Oils

Essential oils have the ability to affect the brain and travel throughout the body via the bloodstream. Here are a few of the potential benefits, when applied or inhaled safely:

Decrease Anxiety

Dechen says many people gravitate toward aromatherapy as a means of calming anxiety.

Promote and Aid Sleep

Given essential oils’ apparent relaxing effects, it’s unsurprising they may have the potential to help people sleep better.

Keep in mind that these studies were done in a short period of time, with small groups of people. Long-term studies using larger population sizes are needed to determine whether lavender can really assist with falling, and staying, asleep.

Relieve Nausea

Essential oils like peppermint and ginger have unique characteristics that may make them ideal for soothing nausea.

Essential Oils Safety and Side Effects

Just because essential oils come from plants doesn’t mean they’re totally safe.

“There are definitely safety concerns,” Davila says. “Essential oils are so concentrated that, sometimes, one drop of an essential oil is like an ounce or more of the plant material.”

  • Oregano oil
  • Cinnamon bark oil
  • Jasmine oil
  • Lemongrass oil
  • Ylang-ylang oil
  • Chamomile oil
  • Bergamot oil

Take caution with applying essential oils if you have allergies or sensitive skin. (And remember to always dilute them with a carrier oil.)

  • Sweet orange
  • Bitter orange
  • Orange petitgrain

Davila recommends avoiding direct sunlight for 12 to 24 hours after using one of these oils on your skin.

Why Young Children Should Avoid Certain Essential Oils

While research on the effects of essential oils on children is thin, and the ethics of which is widely debated in the alternative and complementary healthcare community, two small studies have shown some oils may be potentially harmful to hormone production in youth. For example:

More recent case studies found similar effects in three prepubertal girls and one boy who used fragrances containing lavender essential oil.

While more research is needed to determine how lavender and tea tree oil may affect hormones, Davila recommends approaching both with caution. Avoid using them daily at high doses. Occasional use (once or twice a week) for short period of time (several weeks) may be fine, for adults.

Who Might Want to Try (and Avoid) Essential Oils

Essential oils show promise as a therapeutic modality for a wide range of health concerns, including anxiety, sleep issues, nausea, and pain.

“Typically, it’s recommended not to use them during the first trimester. If you use them in the second or third trimesters, limit yourself to the floral or citrus oils and use them for aromatherapy versus topical use,” Davila says.

And while essential oils aren’t off-limits for people with allergies and sensitive skin, these folks should approach them with caution when it comes to physical application, Davila warns.

Dechen doesn’t recommend using essential oils on infants or children younger than 5 years old, and being careful when using them with a chronic condition or medication. “There has been a lot of research over the last 10 to 15 years about how people taking medications can get reactions from different essential oils,” she says.

Tips for Getting Started With Essential Oils

That said, choosing an essential oil is highly individual, so you may benefit from consulting a qualified aromatherapist.

Once you’ve landed on the oils you want to try — and checked that there are no safety issues — head online or visit a holistic healthcare store. (Essential oils are available at aromatherapy shops, grocery stores, and supplement stores.)

The quality of essential oils vary widely, and there are a number of factors that affect it, including the plants used, processing methods, packaging and handling, and storage. Therefore, you should research to ensure the oils you choose are of quality, as advertised.

Here are a few things to look for when shopping for an essential oil:

  • The Latin name of the plant
  • The name of the country where the plants where grown

The science behind essential oils.

Essential oils, concentrated extracts from plants, have cemented their role in our wellness routines due to their varied and potent properties. Their influence on our health and environments is derived from complex chemical constituents like terpenes and esters, which are responsible for their characteristic aromas and therapeutic effects. In this exploration, we’ll dissect the science behind essential oils and unravel the chemical mysteries that make them a staple in holistic health practices.

Unlocking Nature’s Essence: What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are volatile aromatic compounds extracted from plants, preserving the natural fragrance, or “essence,” of their source. Whether it’s the invigorating scent of peppermint or the soothing aroma of lavender , each oil holds a unique chemical profile that dictates its aroma and therapeutic properties. Extraction methods, typically via steam distillation or cold pressing, are meticulously crafted to preserve the integrity and potency of these precious oils.

The Power Behind the Scent: Terpenes, Esters, and Their Roles

As you begin to explore the molecular world of essential oils, you’ll encounter terpenes and esters, powerful compounds that define the distinctive aromas and therapeutic properties of these notable plant extracts .

Monoterpenes: The Uplifters and Protectors

  • In the spotlight with oils like orange and frankincense , monoterpenes play a pivotal role, renowned not only for their antiseptic and uplifting attributes but also for their ability to elevate our spiritual and emotional states.

Sesquiterpenes: The Calmers and Grounders

  • Intertwining with the complexity of cedarwood and vetiver , sesquiterpenes weave a calming narrative, famed for their anti-inflammatory properties and their unparalleled ability to ground our emotions and foster tranquility.

Phenylpropanoids: The Defenders and Energizers

  • Evident in the spicy allure of clove and cinnamon , phenylpropanoids stand as guardians, lauded for their robust antimicrobial defenses and their role in safeguarding our physical and environmental wellness.

Esters: The Harmonizers and Soothers

  • Delving into oils like bergamot and clary sage , esters envelop us in a cocoon of harmony and serenity, hailed for their ability to gently soothe and balance our physical and emotional realms, easing tensions and fostering a peaceful equilibrium.

Understanding terpenes and esters enables the creation of potent essential oil blends, magnifying their benefits and providing targeted wellness solutions.

The Aromatic Journey: Olfaction and its Impacts on Wellbeing

When inhaled, the molecules within essential oils embark on a journey through our olfactory system, impacting the limbic system - a segment of the brain associated with emotion, memory, and instinctive activities. Science reveals that specific aromas can trigger varied neurological responses, from eliciting feelings of comfort and tranquility to fostering alertness and concentration.

For instance, the linalool found in lavender essential oil is noted for its ability to down-regulate the nervous system, promoting relaxation and potentially aiding sleep. Conversely, the limonene prevalent in citrus oils is associated with uplifting and energizing effects.

Transdermal Marvel: Essential Oils and Skin Interaction

Beyond aromas, essential oils can also permeate our skin, interacting with biological systems to promote localized and systemic effects. When applied topically - in conjunction with carrier oils to ensure safe usage - essential oils can offer soothing, alleviating, and cleansing benefits , among others. For instance, eucalyptus oil , with its rich 1,8-cineole content, has been acknowledged for its potent anti-inflammatory and respiratory health-enhancing properties.

The Symbiotic Relationship: Essential Oils and Holistic Health

The science of essential oils demonstrates a dynamic and symbiotic relationship between humans and plants. The diverse palette of essential oils provides a plethora of options to tailor wellbeing practices, aligning with holistic approaches towards health and wellness. It’s a journey where traditional wisdom meets modern science, providing a bridge to interconnect physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

Essential Oils Don’t Work, and Ancient Times

Or so I thought. How could these little plant oils do all that they claim? Is this snake oil? Is it placebo? All legitimate questions that we ask ourselves. We certainly don’t want to spend our money, or time, on something that will not actually do the job it claims it will do.  But what if they do?  What if Jesus was brought essential oils upon his birth?  What if they are hallowed in the Bible?

From Egypt to China to Israel, essential oils were the medicine of ancient times.  The Bible references essential oils, oil-producing plants, and their uses  1,035 times, according to Healing Oils of the Bible .

And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.”  Matthew 2:11

Essential Oils and my Son

To be honest, the biggest draw to these oils, for me, was because of the reading I’ve done from moms who have used them on their children.  Countless moms have expressed how much essential oils have helped their children with either overall well-being in relation to mood and alertness, even with aggression or obedience. My son struggles with aggression towards his little sister. I believe this is rooted in unresolved jealousy and because he is a very hands-on and physical child. This has been a constant struggle for me — making sure they both have equal parts of me so that they both feel loved and cherished, and really, to keep my daughter safe.

I  have been doing a lot of reading.  Reading about the molecular property of these oils and where they are placed on the body and how this can effect your cells in different ways.  Anointing a child’s head with oil (or feet, heart, or tummy) could significantly change negative behaviors into positive attributes. I am truly willing to try anything that could help maintain and encourage a peaceful and loving home.

Some of the reasons I’ve decided to start using essential oils include:

  • my son’s emotions
  • occasional sleepless nights for me or my son
  • poison ivy outbreak every summer for my husband
  • dry skin in my son and husband
  • gall bladder and liver function
  • menstrual cramps
  • overall wellness during cold season
  • tummy aches
  • my broken arm pains
  • bumps and bruises
  • cuts and bug bites
  • just stress of living and exercising and parenting!

Does the quality of the oils really matter?

I have used the store-bought essential oils in the past.  Lavender in my homemade all-purpose house cleaner, tea tree in my homemade baby wipe solution, peppermint for headaches.  I was left feeling disappointed.  They didn’t work.  I still use the lavender in my cleaner, but I don’t know how much it is actually disinfecting — it mostly just smells nice.  Nothing special, just “eh.”

Once we delved into some of the chemistry involved, from our Reference Guide for Essential Oils  , even my husband is becoming a believer!

These therapeutic grade essential oils are, for its primary use, put onto our largest organ, the skin.   So it is very important that anything we put on our skin does not have chemicals, pesticides, or gross solvents.  Young Living is dedicated to being free of all of any of these.  The whole process is explained on their site Seed to Seal .  The plants’ oils remain whole and pure and are derived using organic methods.

I am truly amazed at how much I love these oils.  At first, the smells were overwhelming, and I was not sure that I was going to appreciate, or even like them.  But then I began to see them working for me and my family and we are using them every day.  I stubbed my toe.  PanAway.  I am restless at night.  Peace & Calming.  I feel irritable.  Joy and StressAway.  I have period cramps.  PanAway.  My daughter has bug bites.  Purification.  My son needs to calm down.  Valor and Peace & Calming.  My 11 oils really have worked so many mini miracles.  I am so happy that I’ve taken the leap to trust in God and his perfect design.  He created these plants.

Selecting and Blending Essential Oils

When selecting essential oils for journey aromatherapy, it is important to consider your individual needs and preferences. If you are new to essential oils, it is a good idea to start with a single oil and gradually add others as you become more familiar with their properties.

You can also blend essential oils to create a custom blend that meets your specific needs. When blending essential oils, it is important to start with a small amount of each oil and gradually add more until you reach the desired scent and effect.

Safe Usage and Dilution Ratios

Essential oils are highly concentrated and can be harmful if used improperly. It is important to always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil, such as jojoba oil or almond oil, before applying them to the skin. The recommended dilution ratio for most essential oils is 2-3 drops of essential oil per 1 ounce of carrier oil.

You should also avoid using essential oils on broken skin or near the eyes. If you are pregnant or have any health conditions, it is important to talk to your doctor before using essential oils.

Methods of Journey Aromatherapy

Journey aromatherapy offers various methods to harness the therapeutic benefits of essential oils, each with unique advantages and limitations. Understanding these methods allows you to tailor your aromatherapy experience to achieve desired outcomes.

Inhalation is a direct and effective way to absorb essential oils into the body. Methods include:

  • Direct Inhalation: Place a few drops of essential oil on a tissue or handkerchief and inhale deeply.
  • Steam Inhalation: Add essential oils to a bowl of hot water and inhale the steam.
  • Diffusers: Diffuse essential oils into the air using an electric or ultrasonic diffuser.
  • Immediate and potent effects.
  • Can target specific areas, such as the respiratory system.

Limitations:

  • Short-lived effects.
  • Not suitable for all essential oils (some may be irritating).

Topical Application

Topical application involves applying diluted essential oils directly to the skin. Methods include:

  • Massage: Mix essential oils with a carrier oil (such as jojoba or almond oil) and massage into the skin.
  • Bathing: Add essential oils to a warm bath.
  • Compresses: Soak a cloth in a solution of essential oils and water and apply to the skin.
  • Localized and sustained effects.
  • Can treat skin conditions and promote relaxation.
  • May cause skin irritation in some individuals.
  • Not suitable for all essential oils (some may be toxic if applied topically).

Diffusion disperses essential oils into the air, creating an aromatic environment. Methods include:

  • Electric Diffusers: Use heat or ultrasonic vibrations to diffuse essential oils.
  • Reed Diffusers: Immerse reeds in a bottle of essential oils, allowing them to absorb and release the scent.
  • Candles: Burn candles infused with essential oils.
  • Creates a relaxing and calming atmosphere.
  • Can be used to purify the air and improve sleep.
  • Effects may be less intense than other methods.
  • Some diffusers may produce heat, which can alter the chemical composition of essential oils.

Creating a Journey Aromatherapy Blend

Crafting personalized journey aromatherapy blends empowers you to harness the transformative properties of essential oils for specific purposes. By thoughtfully selecting oils based on intention and symbolism, you can create potent mixtures that enhance your journey.

Choosing Oils with Intention and Symbolism

The selection of essential oils for your blend should be guided by your desired outcome. Consider the emotions, qualities, or experiences you wish to evoke. Research the symbolic meanings and therapeutic properties of different oils to find those that resonate with your intentions.

Step-by-Step Blending Process

  • Gather your oils: Choose 2-4 essential oils that complement each other and align with your purpose.
  • Select a carrier oil: Dilute your essential oils in a carrier oil, such as jojoba, almond, or coconut oil, to create a safe and skin-friendly blend.
  • Determine the dilution ratio: For topical use, a dilution of 2-5% essential oils in carrier oil is generally recommended. For a 2% dilution, add 6-12 drops of essential oil per 10ml of carrier oil.
  • Mix the oils: Add your essential oils to the carrier oil in a dark glass bottle. Shake well to blend thoroughly.
  • Label and store: Label your blend with the oils used, dilution ratio, and date. Store it in a cool, dark place for up to 6 months.

Journey Aromatherapy in Practice

Journey aromatherapy has found practical applications in supporting individuals on their personal growth and transformative journeys. Case studies and anecdotal evidence showcase the transformative potential of this holistic approach.

Case Studies and Examples, Journey aromatherapy

  • Anxiety Reduction: A study conducted at the University of Washington found that inhaling lavender essential oil significantly reduced anxiety levels in patients undergoing dental procedures.
  • Improved Sleep Quality: Research published in the journal “Sleep” demonstrated that using a blend of lavender, chamomile, and ylang-ylang essential oils improved sleep quality and duration.
  • Emotional Regulation: A clinical trial published in “Complementary Therapies in Medicine” showed that a combination of aromatherapy with counseling effectively regulated emotions in individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Transformative Potential

Journey aromatherapy empowers individuals to take an active role in their well-being and personal growth. By harnessing the therapeutic properties of essential oils, it fosters a deeper connection to self, promotes emotional healing, and enhances resilience.

Integrating Journey Aromatherapy into Daily Routines

  • Diffusion: Use an essential oil diffuser to disperse the aromatic molecules into the air, creating a calming or energizing atmosphere.
  • Topical Application: Dilute essential oils with a carrier oil (such as coconut or jojoba oil) and apply them to the skin for localized effects.
  • Inhalation: Inhale essential oils directly from the bottle or use an inhaler to clear congestion, reduce stress, or boost mood.

Final Thoughts

Journey aromatherapy is a transformative tool that empowers you to create a personalized path towards growth and well-being. By embracing the aromatic wisdom of essential oils, you unlock a world of possibilities, fostering resilience, igniting creativity, and deepening your connection to self and others. As you continue your journey, may the scents of nature guide you towards a life filled with purpose, meaning, and unwavering spirit.

INSIGHTS & NEWS

Essential oils: a journey through history.

by Lebermuth , on Apr 16, 2019

Avid users of essential oils may find it difficult to imagine life without them. Rightfully so! These herbal gifts serve a multitude of purposes. Let's take lavender oil, for example. In history it has been said to induce relaxation, aid in sleep, kill bacteria, reduce swelling and itching for bug bites and bee stings, stops bleeding, cleans wounds, and the list goes on. Aside from the healing properties, essential oils also have spiritual and beauty enhancing value that has been used since ancient times. Let's take a brief journey back in time and around the world to discover how essential oils have been used throughout history.

Moving ahead in time to 2597 BC, Huang Ti, The Yellow Emperor of China, was recorded using essential oils during his reign. He wrote a book on medicine including the use of aromatics. This book is still used today by those practicing Eastern medicine.

Next, we travel to India where literature from 2000 BC references the use of oils in Ayurvedic (or Ayurveda) healthcare. "Ayur" means life and "veda" means knowledge. This word with Sanskrit roots is a natural healing system that incorporates spiritual, philosophical and practical elements using essential oils as the core element. The Veda , India's most sacred book of hymns and religious texts, references over 700 uses of herbs and aromatics for healing and religious purposes. Even today, Ayurvedic traditions are gaining popularity in the U.S. and Canada.

In continuation of the theme of holy books, the Bible references essential oils in the old and new testament. A well-known reference in the book of Exodus provides the recipe for holy anointing oil which included cinnamon, clove, cassia, olive oil and spikenard.

In the Middle Ages, the use of essential oils were considered to be decadent and inappropriate by the Catholic Church, causing the knowledge of oils to be kept secret by Monks. Those caught using the oils were accused of witchcraft and sentenced to banishment or death. Moving forward to the 1600's, knowledge of the use of essential oils was restored, as writings were distributed about its many purposes. By the 1800's essential oils were prescribed by pharmacists for a variety of illnesses. In 1910, a fluke discovery was made that lavender oil heals burns after a chemist accidentally burned his hands in a lab explosion. This discovery led to the antiseptic use of essential oils for war wound treatments.

As time has continued to modern day, use of essential oils has become more widely known as they are published in books and readily available online within seconds of a Google search. Throughout history, mankind has used essential oils for its medicinal, spiritual, aromatic and beauty purposes. One can only imagine what discoveries and additional uses essential oils have in store for us in the future.

How to use essential oils, according to medical experts

journey on essential oils

You've likely seen — or smelled — essential oils before: Small bottles with potent scents, usually sold in stores surrounded by other "natural," "holistic" products.

Essential oils are fragrant plant extracts, made by steaming or pressing plants, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine . They're often used for aromatherapy, which a centuries-old practice of inhaling these oils or absorbing them through the skin with the goal of improving certain health ailments. There are dozens of types of essential oils, including lavender, tea tree, peppermint and lemon oils. Some celebrities, like Bella Hadid , swear by them.

If you're considering getting into the essential oil game, this is what medical experts want you to know first.

How to use essential oils

Essential oils are likely safe to inhale, University of Maryland School of Pharmacy assistant professor Lauren Hynicka, PharmD, BCPS, tells USA TODAY. You can add a few drops to a diffuser, cotton ball or nasal inhaler. If you're going to use them topically, make sure to dilute them in coconut or jojoba oil first.

And make sure you're investing in a high-quality essential oil — Johns Hopkins warns that some companies will dub their products "therapeutic-grade," but that's an unregulated marketing term, not a signifier that it's a product a medical expert would recommend.

What is the number one essential oil for anxiety?

Some research has shown that essential oils can offer some benefit for some health concerns. Lavender essential oil may be beneficial for anxiety , depression and sleep .

Experts caution that there's still a lot unknown about how essential oils work, because most of the studies conducted aren't the highest quality.

"Conducting high quality research with essential oils can be challenging," Hynicka says. She references double-blind studies, during which neither the study subject nor the researcher knows if a placebo or actual treatment is being used until the end to prevent bias.

But as Hynicka points out, it's tough to fake a placebo for essential oils: "Either you smell an essential oil, or you don’t."

Johns Hopkins called some lab studies "promising," but said clinical trials actually using humans were "mixed," with some showing benefits and others showing no improvement in symptoms.

More on essential oils What oils to use, how to use them and safety tips

When should you not use essential oils?

Those who are pregnant, nursing, taking medication and/or have a history of seizures should be wary of using essential oils, Hynicka says. Even if you're not, she recommends taking stock of what ailment you're hoping to solve by using essential oils — could it be better helped with a different form of treatment?

"I would recommend anyone using essential oils mention the reason and how they plan to use essential oils with their doctor or medical provider," Hynicka says, adding that they should be kept away from children and pets.

Our Young Living Essential Oils Journey

Hey y’all.  If you follow me on Instagram I have shared about our love of Young Living essential oils.  I asked in my Instagram stories if you would like me to write a blog about our essential oils journey and the answer was a resounding YES!  With that type of response, I knew this blog was a must.

Many people are very curious about essential oils and either don’t know where to start or are a bit intimidated by it all.  All I want to say is, I get it.  I was in your shoes when I first started researching oils and I was astounded by what I found.  But before we get in to that, let me start with why we decided to take the plunge into essential oils.

In The Beginning...

Our journey began in 2014 when our sweet Layla was in third grade.  Her teacher noticed Layla had a difficult time focusing in class.  If you knew her when she was that age, you would understand why.  Ken and I would classify Layla as a free spirit.  Often in her own world of unicorns and rainbows.  Her Pre-School teacher awarded her the “Most Likely to be on Broadway” award. lol

young living

During a meeting with Layla’s 3rd grade teacher, she asked me if we ever had Layla tested for ADD or ADHD to which I replied no.  After discussing things over with Ken, we decided to get her tested.  Once we finished the mountain of paperwork, the results came back and determined Layla, without a doubt, had ADD.

young living

Our Difficult Medication Decision

Her doctor was quick to recommend medication.  Ken and I didn’t want to do medication but he offered, what he called, a more natural medication called Strattera so we thought we would give it a try.  The medication did help Layla focus but it had other side effects.  Our sweet little girls’ personality changed almost immediately.

She became paranoid, irritable, and lethargic.  She would be so wonderfully kind one minute then have huge fits of anger the next and then walk around the house like a zombie.  It pained us to see her like this so we made the decision to remove her from the medicine and began researching natural ways to help with her focus.  Once she was off the medicine, we had our Layla back!

journey on essential oils

Why Young Living?

That’s when I started researching natural remedies for ADD which led me to the essential oils community.  The more I researched the more I was intrigued.  Could this really help our Layla with her focus without changing her personality like the medication?

I showed Ken what I found and we agreed to give it a try.  We decided to go with Young Living because of the enormous effort they make in keeping their oils completely natural.  Their “Seed To Seal” standard is priceless.  We found that not all essential oils are created equally and some companies add synthetics, contaminants, or cheap fillers that leave you with very little actual oil.

They have a large community that is very helpful for newbies like us with a ton of questions.  There are boards and social media pages where you can follow along and ask questions of other oil users in the community that have more experience.  That was extremely helpful for us as we started our journey.

It was in these groups where I discovered a mixture of oils that would change Layla’s life.  They recommended using a mixture of these oils and suggested we apply it to the bottoms of her feet and lower back on her spine.  It seemed weird to us at first but we were willing to give it a try.  We are thankful we did!  It was a huge success!

young living

Later we added an oil diffuser necklace that helped Layla stay calm throughout the day.  When she would get antsy, she would tell us that she would smell her necklace and it would calm her down.  We became full fledged believers in essential oils.

Now I'm a Believer!

With the overwhelming success we had with Layla, we started looking at other areas we could use oils.  Ken started using oils for muscle pain after workouts and he loved their Valor oil for his chronic back pain.  We started using oils in place of many of our cleaning products around our home.  I even began supplementing my thyroid medication with their Endoflex oil.

young living

We also use oil diffusers around the house for a multitude of reasons.  Some oils like Thieves and RC help with cold symptoms while others like Lavender and Dream Catcher help with sleeping.  We even take diffusers with us when we travel and stay in hotels.  When Sawyer was born, we used a diffuser in the delivery room and the doctor and nurses loved it.  We currently have a diffuser in every room in our home and Ken uses a diffuser in his office at work.

young living

We also found that diffusing certain mixtures in your home during different seasons is much like burning scented candles but without the chemicals. I still use some candles because I like the ambiance and moderations is key to me. 😉  These are our favorite Fall and Christmas time mixtures.

young living

The Young Living community has been life changing for our family so I thought I would share our experience with y’all.  Many people are on the fence and just don’t know where to start.  If any of our experience hits home then I would suggest giving it a try!

To get started, you’ll need to sign up as a Young Living member and purchase the premium starter kit.  This kit is great because it comes with all the oils you’ll need to get started along with one of their diffusers.  Then you can always order additional oils later as needed with your 24% discount!!   If you sign up under me you’ll receive exclusive access to our Young Living essential oils Facebook group where we can answer questions and learn together.  Also a welcome mailer with some fun info and items to get you started!

We also use Amazon for things like extra glass bottles, roller ball applicators, holders, etc.  I’ve also shared on my Instagram some of the diffusers we use from Target.  I’ll link some items we use below for your convenience.

Is there any oils that help a diabetic?

We love YLEO! I love hearing others stories, and seeing these sweet pix of Layla, Jax, and Wyatt when they were small is a sweet little bonus!! I began for my health, and began using Cedarwood to encourage sleeping thru the night, And Progessence Plus to aid in Feminine hormone balance. Now my cabinet is filled to overflowing with oils I use daily on me, my husband and children. I cook with the vitality line too 😉. Thanks for sharing, Aubrey!

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I have been struggling with my oldest in kindergarten. His preschool teacher had made a comment about getting him tested and I told her I would but I am not putting him on medication and will still not today. I will definitely look further into YL.

' src=

(From Ken) Hi Amanda! We completely understand your desire to not put your son on medication. From our personal experience, it wasn’t worth it. Doctors don’t want to say it but there are alternatives to medication and the oils worked great for our Layla.

' src=

Thanks for sharing Aubrey! Love everything you do. Keep up the good work! God bless

' src=

Thanks for sharing! Did you have to try several different combinations before you found something that worked for Layla or was that the first combination of oils you tried and it worked?

Love all that you do!

(From Ken) Hello Amy! No, we didn’t try any other combinations on Layla. The first one we tried worked great. Aubrey did so much research and this combo was always what was recommended for Layla’s ADD.

What a beautiful story, thanks for sharing! The price of essential oils has always scared me but when I read stories like yours it makes me want to just buy it all!!

' src=

We use YL EO’s too. My youngest, now 26, is ADHD and intellectual challenged. She is on Strattera which is the only med that worked for her. While is school she was also on two other meds but have since stopped them due to success we found for her in using the oils and supplements. It’s amazing!

' src=

Hi Aubrey Would you mind sharing the amounts you used for the combo of oils for Layla? Did you mix that in a carrier oil as well? Hoping this helps my oldest! Thanks!

' src=

Thank you so much for sharing! I know so many people that use oils and I believe they work, I just haven’t thought of using them for my son with his focus issues…total duh brain moment. This gives me a good kick in the pants to give it a shot for him, especially with this remote learning. He’s struggling so much this year (6th grade.) Thanks again Aubrey!! ❤️

' src=

I just saw your post on Instagram in your stories. Thanks for linking your blog. This is so helpful. I’ve been thinking about signing up for a few years but get overwhelmed with it all but have also read essential oils can be bad for dogs, which I have. I need to do more research on that. But, wanted to say thanks for sharing. We don’t like taking pharma in our household so this really hit home for me. My son has ADHD and cognitive delays. We took him off his meds as he got older, but agree, it changes them. He was always quiet while it first taken. He’d become himself when it wore off at night. I need to try this for him as well as my anxiety. You just answered my question about whether I should sign up!!! Now, just have to do more research on the pup thing. Thanks so much

' src=

Sarah Estes

This is us!!! My daughter was also asked by her third grade teacher to be tested. And same results. We do have her on medication but she hates taking it. Can I ask how many times a day you apply it? I can’t wait to try this out in my now 12 yo to see if it works for her. Thank you!!

' src=

Michele Carroll

Hi! Thanks for the inspo! Currently looking into medication for our son again to help w school, which is a road I really don’t want to go down again- going to give that combo a try! He won’t wear a necklace I’d imagine? Any other ideas to make it portable for him so he can have it on him? Thanks so much for posting this today you’ve given me hope to try something else before we seek meds again !

' src=

Belinda Whittehouse (IG: treerockranch)

I have never tried this brand. I would love to win it!! Little Layla is so adorable!!😍

' src=

Thank you Aubrey. My nephew has ADHD. I am going to pass this information onto my sister to see if this can help him so he can get off the medication. Thank you so much. This is all great information.

Bella Hadid is Finding Her Way

By Margaux Anbouba

Image may contain Bella Hadid Clothing Dress Grass Plant Face Head Person Photography Portrait and Adult

Though Bella Hadid has been in the spotlight for over a decade, there’s still something refreshingly open about the Palestinian-Dutch supermodel. When we meet over Zoom on a Monday afternoon, she’s bare-faced, hair swept back with a simple black cloth headband . After the pleasantries that come along with meeting any person for the first time, we get personal—fast.

“One day, I woke up and just saw something on Instagram,” she shares, not revealing the catalyst for what many now see as her wellness transformation. “I knew I needed to make changes in my life to become happy with myself, so I chose to go through this journey. I went through a lot of things mentally, and at one point it got pretty dark. I’m a sensitive person and going through pain is the only way to grow.” Too relatable—in the past decade, there have been countless studies dedicated to negative effects of social media on mental health.

Through the pain and her ongoing battle with Lyme Disease (and the host of physical and cognitive symptoms that come along with it), Hadid began to focus on things that helped her feel grounded, made her happy, and in her words, helped her “remember who I am.” Right before our call, she was actually doing one of those grounding practices. “I don't have a cold plunge here, but I have a little pool and it's freezing. I jumped in before I started my calls and I feel a lot better.”

Another one of those practices is essential oils, which led to her new beauty venture Orebella, out on May 2nd. She says that while on a trip two years ago to visit Palestinian relatives living in Washington, D.C., “my dad and I were playing backgammon by the fireplace when I discovered my uncle Mahmoud used to make essential oils. I had no idea.” Things were already in motion for the yet-to-be-named Orebella, which combines a play on the translation of the model's surname into English (Hadid means iron) and her first name.

Hadid believes in signs, kismet, and the like—and learning this fact about her family’s entrepreneurial history made her feel like "I have my aunties and my amos [uncles in Arabic] all with me and blessing me all the time.”

Orebella’s first collection is three fragrances: floral Window2Soul , tropical Blooming Fire , and woody-marine Salted Muse , all inspired by Hadid’s life. Salted Muse, which has notes of sea salt, pink pepper, and olive oil, pays homage to her family. “Whether you are Palestinian or just Arab, our families put olive oil on everything. That was, for me, something I could put in that was special and an ode to my heritage.”

The juice itself is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. “It’s the first-ever non-alcoholic, essential oil-based, bi-phase perfume,” she tells me proudly. Fragrance is something she’s been sensitive to her entire life because of her health issues, so she sought to find a solution: Something gentle, wearable, but still complex. Before you apply, shake the crystal-shaped bottles to combine the oil and fragrance layers and “activate” the scent. Other personal touches include her initials and the angel numbers 222 etched into the top of each flacon, and the specific shade of the gold lids, “inspired by the raw gold of Arab culture and heritage,” she says.

Recently, Hadid started adding her middle name, Khair, to her moniker. The word translates to “good,” and feels symbolic of where she's at in life. She says the pathway to happiness is more clear—and accessible—than ever before. “For the first time in my life, I just want to focus on being happy.” And she'll smell fantastic while doing it.

Orebella is available on May 2nd here and on Ulta.com on May 10th.
