Classic Cambodia

I was impressed with every aspect of this trip from the Trip Leader, accommodations, transportation and activities. The food has to be some of the best I have ever had! You could spend days and days meandering through the Angkor Archaeological Park - just remarkable. Get ready to capture the iconic sunrise shot of Angkor Wat - well worth the super early wake-up call! We also had the opportunity to visit the Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity which was another highlight for me.

What an amazing 6 days in Cambodia!! This tour allows you to see so much and really experience elements of Cambodian culture. The trip to the Killing Fields and S21 is sombre but eye opening! In Siem Riep we loved our tours of the temples, planting trees for the locals and of course the circus at the end. The guides are so lovely and knowledgable and really look out for you. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about Cambodia!

After bookling a Vietnam Tour we decided to add this tour to the end of our trip and we're glad we did. The Temples of Siem Reap are amazing. Narong was our personal tour guide. We wanted to add a temple that was not part of the package and he arranged to fit that in as well. He was very knowledgable and provided us some great education about the Temples we visted, the many carvings on the walls and the overall history of Cambodia. Miuch like Vietnam the food was excellent but slighlty different especially with their use of spices such as Curry. Lucy Do in the office made sure all of our needs were met and stayed in touch with us to make sure we were happy.

Overall, we were very happy with Siem Reaper Travel. The tour of the Angkor Wat complex with Mr Phearun was amazing. We traveled to places where we were the only people at some ruins. Customer service from Ms. Sreyleak was excellent. Emails were promptly returned and questions were promptly answered. So many wonderful memories touring through the back countries of Cambodia.

Was delivered as described. Both our guides from Phnom Penh and Sein Reap were excellent, very well informed, knowledgable and courteous. The hotels were comfortable and driver plus cars were very comfortable. All were punctual and made our 5 day vacation very enjoyable. The sights and activities were excellent. Overall I would recommend this tour to anyone wishing to get a taste of Cambodia.

What people love about Siem Reap Tours

Polite people, well organized and magnificent archeological sites
The trip included a variety of activities that gave us a wide range of experiences. It was well paced and included both day and night activities. We visited some hidden gems that we would have missed with independent travel. The guides were very knowledgeable, spoke excellent English, and very professional. I loved my time in Cambodia and would highly recommend this trip
My CEO Ratha was amazing! That paired with a good group of people made it the adventure of a life time l.

Why book a tour in Siem Reap?

There are hundreds of independent and DIY things to do in Siem Reap – so why bother booking a tour?

I’m the first to admit that I’m not a huge fan of guided tours. I generally prefer to do things my own way, with the flexibility to take as much time as I need in each place.

Siem Reap is one place in Cambodia where I usually sign up for a tour or two, simply because there’s so much to discover beyond Angkor. Having access to a tour guide’s local knowledge is invaluable in a place like Siem Reap, where the history runs deep and the culture is complex.

Whether you have a particular interest in food, culture, dance or art – or you just want to do something adventurous – a Siem Reap tour is a fantastic way to go deeper. If you’re visiting Siem Reap with kids , a hands-on tour can be a fun and valuable learning experience for littlies.

Most Siem Reap tours are incredibly good value for money, too. Supporting small tour companies and independent guides is a great way to channel the proceeds of tourism into the hands of the local community.

This guide to the best Siem Reap tours includes temple tours, food tours, culture and DIY tours, alternative tours, and many more.

Things to look for when choosing a Siem Reap tour

There are literally hundreds of tour companies in Siem Reap. It can be really hard to tell which tours are legitimate and worth your money versus tours that will leave you feeling like you wasted your precious holiday time.

These are some of the things I recommend looking out for when choosing a tour. I’ve considered all these factors when shortlisting my favourite Siem Reap tours below.

  • Is the company locally run? Believe it or not, but Siem Reap is one of Cambodia’s poorest provinces. That’s because a lot of tourism businesses are run by foreign companies who send their profits straight out of the country.
  • Group size: Do companies cap the number of participants? Are tours intimate, or could it turn into a huge group?
  • Additional fees: What’s included in the price and what’s not? Not all companies are up front about this. For example, Angkor tours usually don’t include admission to the temple complex, so you’ll need to take care of buying your own pass .
  • Flexibility: Is there room to move in the itinerary, or is it packed full? If the weather turns bad, is there a Plan B in place?
  • Pick up/drop off from your accommodation: It is included? Not all tours offer this. If the itinerary starts some distance away from your accommodation, you’ll have to factor in the extra time and cost to get to the meeting place.
  • Vehicle type: If transport is included, is it in and air-conditioned van, or will you be riding en plein air in a tuk tuk? If you’re travelling in summer, the former is preferable.

What to wear on your Siem Reap tour

Loose, lightweight clothing is the way to go. If you’re visiting temples or sacred areas, or just villages, it’s best to cover your shoulders and knees (both ladies and men). Cambodian culture is quite conservative, so you’d do well to dress appropriately if you’re visiting local markets or rural villages. Long sleeves will help keep the sun and the bugs off, too.

I always recommend carrying a lightweight cotton scarf (ladies) or a buff (men) in Cambodia. This can come in handy for covering your shoulders in temples, covering your mouth if the road is dusty – and a million other uses. If you forget to bring one from home, you can pick up a krama – a traditional checkered Cambodian scarf – at the Made in Cambodia Market on Kings Road.

A wide-brim hat is absolutely essential at any time of year, and especially if you’re going to be out in the middle of the day. Closed-in shoes are preferable for Angkor and any tours that involve cycling, climbing or hiking.

What to bring with you

  • Your camera! Siem Reap is incredibly photogenic.
  • Reusable water bottle & re-hydration tablets. Don’t contribute to Cambodia’s plastic waste problem. Bring an insulated water bottle and consult your guide about where you can re-fill it throughout the day.
  • Snacks. If your itinerary is long enough, it will usually include breakfast or lunch. However it’s always a good idea to have some non-perishable snacks on hand in case you get the munchies halfway through.
  • Small change (preferably riel). This will come in handy if you stop by a local market or a local temple, where it’s customary to leave a small donation.
  • Insect repellent & sunscreen. Essential if you’re going to be spending time outside as part of your tour. If your tour extends to dusk, you’ll need r epellent with deet to keep the mosquitoes at bay.
  • Rain jacket & fold-up umbrella for the rainy season.

Tipping your guide & tour etiquette

Tipping is not mandatory, but it is much appreciated. Gratuities are not normally included in the price of a pre-organised tour. If you’re satisfied with the service, it’s good practice to tip your guide. 10% is a reasonable benchmark, but it’s really up to you.

Don’t forget your driver! A small tip ($2-5) for your tuk tuk/van driver or boat captain is also appropriate. You may also choose to tip at any restaurants or cafes you visit as part of the tour as well. You can ask your guide for advice.

Best Siem Reap tours

Angkor wat tours.

Angkor is the reason most people visit Siem Reap. I’ve been to the temples three times now – once on a tour, once on a tuk tuk, and once DIY. I can tell you firsthand that you get so much more out of the experience if you have a guide to show you what’s what.

A popular option is to organise a DIY tour with a tuk tuk. Usually the driver can give you some basic information, but unless they are a certified guide (which 90% of the time they’re not), they won’t be able to accompany you inside any of the temples.

If you really want to come away with an understanding of the significance of Angkor, I highly recommend organising a tour with a professional English-speaking guide.

This guide to the best Siem Reap tours includes temple tours, food tours, culture and DIY tours, alternative tours, and many more.

Angkor Wat Full Day Sunrise Tour

Siem Reap’s pièce de résistance is sunrise over Angkor Wat. If this features on your bucket list, it’s a good idea to let someone else take care of the logistics (including the timing and finding the best place to position yourself) so you can have the best experience possible. I tried to do this DIY once and failed miserably – I was still in the queue at the ticket office when the sun came up!

This award-winning full-day Angkor tour starts with sunrise and hits all of the major highlights – Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Bayon and Ta Prohm. Groups are limited to just 10 people, and local guides narrate each temple in detail.

Hotel pick up and AC transport are provided, but note that the price doesn’t include the cost of entry to the park (you can pay extra on the day to secure your temple pass) or lunch.

Angkor Wat Temple Hopping With Sunset

Not a morning person? This 10-hour tour follows a similar program but you skip sunrise and catch sunset at Pre Rup temple instead. It starts at 7.45am with hotel pick up. AC transportation and an English speaking guide are included, but again, you’ll have to pay extra to secure your Angkor Park Pass if you don’t have one already.

Angkor Sunrise Bike Tour with Jungle Breakfast & Lunch

Perfect for active travellers, this 9-hour mountain bike tour is run by socially responsible Grasshopper Adventures. After sunrise at Angkor, a traditional Khmer breakfast is served just outside the temple area. Then it’s off down the back trails to visit Ta Phrom and Bayon before a lunch stop at a restaurant overlooking a reservoir. Transfer to and from your hotel to the Park is included; pick up your Angkor Pass in advance or on the day for an extra fee.

Angkor Temple Tour and Gastronomic Experience

Temples + Khmer food = an excellent day out in Siem Reap. This foodies tour covers Angkor Wat, Bayon and Ta Prohm, giving you a good overview of the central temples. A four-course lunch or breakfast at a classy lakeside restaurant inside the temple complex is built into the itinerary. Choose from either a sunrise or sunset tour depending on your preference.

You’ll need your own Angkor Park Pass, but as usual, transport, pick up and an English-speaking guide all come included.

Alternative temple tours

While you should definitely prioritise The Grand Circuit, if you have more than a day, it’s worth venturing beyond Angkor to check out some of the farther-flung temples around Siem Reap Province.

An organised tour with vehicle transfer and a professional driver is just about the only way to discover these more remote sites safely and comfortably. Remember you’ll need to cover your own entrance fees as they’re not included in the tour price.

This guide to the best Siem Reap tours includes temple tours, food tours, culture and DIY tours, alternative tours, and many more.

Banteay Srei Temple Small-Group Tour

Pink-stone Banteay Srei (‘Women’s Citadel’) is one of the most beautiful structures in the area. But because of its far-flung location north of Angkor, a lot of tourists miss it. This full day tour from Siem Reap gives you an up-close look at Banteay Srei’s incredible bas reliefs. Pre Rup, a laterite Hindu temple, and Preah Khan temple also feature on the itinerary.

There’s a lunch stop at Banteay Srei, but you’ll have to cover the cost of your meal. Note that entry to Banteay Srei is included in the Angkor Park Pass.

Koh Ker and Beng Mealea Temples Tour

More remote again, Koh Ker (120km north of Siem Reap) and Beng Mealea (65km north-east) are almost impossible to get to without a car and guide. This epic 11-hour itinerary takes you from your hotel in the city into the heart of Siem Reap province – and back in time to the origins of the mighty Angkorian Empire.

Nestled deep in the forest, the sacred sites of Prasat Thom, Prasat Pram and Prasat Chrap that make up the Koh Ker complex are fascinating and well and truly off the beaten track. A Khmer lunch is provided at a nearby restaurant. Temple entry fees (roughly $15) are not included and must be paid on the day.

Best Tonle Sap floating village tours

Tonle Sap lake is a 45-minute drive south of Siem Reap and a popular day trip option if you want to see a slice of rural Cambodian life. Families live on the lake in floating villages – extravagant set ups where houses, fish farms, schools and police stations all balance on the water’s surface.

Chong Khneas is the closest floating village to Siem Reap and extremely popular. The only downside is that it’s very touristy and overcrowded during the day.

Most villages also charge a separate entry fee, which can be up to $20 per person.

This guide to the best Siem Reap tours includes temple tours, food tours, culture and DIY tours, alternative tours, and many more.

Sunset Dinner Tour

If a floating village is something you’re interested in seeing, I highly recommend opting for this sunset tour alternative . It’s a good way to avoid the crowds, and everything (including entry fee to the village) is rolled into the price – so no nasty surprises.

An AC van will pick you up from your hotel at 3.30pm before driving you down to the lake, On the way, there is an opportunity to stop for a photo of the incredible lotus fields that dominate this part of Siem Reap’s waterlogged landscape.

Once aboard the boat, an experienced captain will take you around various points of interest, including the main floating village. An English-speaking guide will narrate the journey and can act as an interpreter if you want to chat to anyone. You then transfer onto a larger boat, the Queen Tara, for a buffet dinner and inclusive drinks. Once the sun has set, it’s back to your hotel in the AC van.

Siem Reap food tours

Khmer cuisine is massively underrated. Siem Reap has some of the finest restaurants in the whole country – so where better to get an introduction to local ingredients and cooking methods?

This guide to the best Siem Reap tours includes temple tours, food tours, culture and DIY tours, alternative tours, and many more.

Cambodian Cook-Out with Local Guide and Chef

Run by Urban Adventures, this 3-hour afternoon cooking class is hosted in an idyllic local village outside the city centre (transport is provided; pick up is at the Old Market). It starts off with a walk through the village, where your guide will explain different farming techniques, introduce you to locally grown fruit and veg, and let you peek inside a few houses for a look at a typical Khmer kitchen.

By sunset, you’ll arrive at the cooking venue. Each person gets their own cooking station, so you can be sure it’s very hands-on. The tour concludes with a sit-down three-course meal (the fruits of your labour) and a cocktail or herbal tea. You get to take home a recipe card and a box of spices.

Fried Insect Cuisine Adventure

You’ve probably heard that fried creepy crawlies (crickets, locusts, tarantulas) are haute cuisine in Cambodia. This fun short tour by socially responsible company Backstreet Academy is the perfect chance to try a few of the country’s more adventurous snack foods.

Choose from a morning or afternoon departure (make your own way to the meeting point north of town) and learn all about the origins of insect cooking. You’ll see how different bugs are prepared with spices, crisp basil leaves and fried garlic. The tour includes a Fear Factor-style challenge, where your stomach will be put to the test.

After Dark Foodie Tour on a Vespa Scooter

Vespa Adventures run some awesome scooter-powered itineraries in Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, and other cities across the region. Their After Dark Foodie Tour of Siem Reap is always a hit among food lovers.

Guests ride pillion behind skilled drivers, freeing you up to overindulge on street food and maybe a few cocktails (although you should probably save yourself for the next tour on this list if beverages are your priority!). As you dart between food stalls and night markets, a local guide will show you all the best street delicacies and how to order them. Don’t be shy – all-you-can-eat is included in the ticket price. A sit-down dinner is then served picnic-style with Cambodian rice wine to accompany.

I love that this tour concludes with a visit to a special evening shrine, where you can join locals in making an offering. The tour runs for about 5 hours, and includes helmets, insurance, rain jackets, and pick up/drop off from your hotel.

Boutique Cocktail Tour by Tuk Tuk

Five hours, five bars, five premium cocktails. That’s not the tagline for this unique Siem Reap tour, but it should be! If you haven’t heard, Temple Town has a reputation for its raucous nightlife, especially around Pub Street. If that’s not your scene, this is your chance to experience some of the city’s more refined boutique cocktail and wine bars.

This cocktail tour kicks off at 6pm. With a long-term expat as your guide, you’ll be whisked around by tuk tuk between five of the city’s loveliest (and classiest) venues, stopping at each one for a tipple and a chat about life in Siem Reap.

Siem Reap tours on wheels

One of the best ways to get off the beaten track in Siem Reap is to explore the countryside outside the city on two wheels. These Siem Reap tours involve cycling, riding easy-rider as a motorbike passenger, or travelling by tuk tuk around the area’s green zones.

This guide to the best Siem Reap tours includes temple tours, food tours, culture and DIY tours, alternative tours, and many more.

Secrets of Siem Reap

Responsible tour company Ayana Journeys runs several completely unique half and full-day itineraries in Siem Reap. ‘Secrets of Siem Reap’ focuses on the lesser-visited corners of the city – quiet temples, local markets and rural villages. It’s all done on bicycle, with the option to upgrade to a tuk tuk if you prefer.

Read my full write-up of Ayana’s Secrets of Siem Reap tour.

Siem Reap Countryside Cycling & Floating Village Tour

This full-day Cambodian countryside tour visits Kampong Khleang floating village, a more authentic and less-touristy alternative to other villages on the Tonle Sap. Cycling through villages via the local fish market, you’ll eventually board a boat to discover the incredible floating forest.

Following a traditional Khmer lunch in a stilted house, you’ll then take a walk though a pagoda and visit another floating village. Bike hire, the boat tour, lunch, and transport to and from Siem Reap are all included in the price. If you’re not confident on a bike, you can sit easy rider on a moto or take a tuk tuk instead for an extra fee.

This guide to the best Siem Reap tours includes temple tours, food tours, culture and DIY tours, alternative tours, and many more.

Quad Bike Countryside Tour

Siem Reap Quad Bike Adventure offers 1, 2 and 3-hour guided tours on their fleet of Polaris Trailboss 330 bikes (safety gear and a user’s demonstration included). You’ll be surprised how quickly the city fades to green as you set out through the villages on the fringe of the city. All tours include a mandatory water buffalo sighting (just kidding, kind of); longer itineraries also visit monasteries, temples and local markets.

I recommend the 4pm tour, which ends with sunset over the glistening paddies. It’s actually a lot more fun to do the quad bikes in the rainy season, when the ground is soft and you can kick up a bit of mud.

Siem Reap Easy Rider Motorbike Tour

With the freedom of a motorbike, you can really go places. This 6-hour easy rider tour (if you’re not familiar with the concept, it just means riding pillion behind an experienced driver) traces the red clay roads around Siem Reap to remote Chai Village monastery, a former Khmer Rouge stronghold. Markets, pagodas and rice paddies also factor into the day. Lunch, safety gear and all entrance fees come included.

DIY & creative Siem Reap tours

There are plenty of experiential Siem Reap tours available for anyone who prefers hands-on learning. These DIY tours focus on different aspects of Khmer culture and are particularly great for kids. Keep one of these indoor tours up your sleeve in case of a rainy day!

This guide to the best Siem Reap tours includes temple tours, food tours, culture and DIY tours, alternative tours, and many more.

Classical Apsara Dancing Class

Apsara is one of Cambodia’s most distinctive and beautiful traditions. This short tour with Backstreet Academy pairs you with a professional dancer and an English-speaking guide to show you the basics of the art form. As you come to grasp the moves, you’ll learn all about Apsara’s cultural significance and just why so many carvings at Angkor bare the flicked wrists of a majestic Apsara dancer. The class is open to adults and kids aged five and over.

If you prefer to be a spectator, this alternative tour allows you to watch an Apsara performance while enjoying a Khmer dinner (tuk tuk transfer also included).

This guide to the best Siem Reap tours includes temple tours, food tours, culture and DIY tours, alternative tours, and many more.

Cambodian Pottery Class

The social enterprise behind this hands-on tour supports young Cambodians with hearing impediments by providing them with training and employment in the ceramics industry. Over the course of this 2-hour masterclass , a tutor will show you how to throw and decorate a bowl using Khmer clay.

Your creation is then fired overnight and available for pick up (or delivery to your hotel) the following afternoon. The price includes tuk tuk transfer from your hotel to the workshop and back.

Copper Metal Bracelet Workshop

Become a coppersmith’s apprentice for a few hours in this hands-on jewellery making workshop hosted by Backstreet Academy. Chisel, hammer and shine your way to a truly bespoke Cambodian souvenir.

Siem Reap tours for mind, body & soul

If it’s inner peace you’re searching for, try a tour designed to help you connect with Cambodia’s zen Buddhist traditions. These tours will help you gain a deeper understanding of Siem Reap – and learn mindfulness skills you can take back home with you.

This guide to the best Siem Reap tours includes temple tours, food tours, culture and DIY tours, alternative tours, and many more.

Morning Meditation Practice, Village Tour with Angkor Wat

One of my favourite tours on the list, this full-day itinerary takes a very different approach to experiencing Angkor. After an early morning wake-up call, guests are transferred to a meditation site in the hills overlooking the Tonle Sap. Monks offer a brief introduction to the basics of Buddhist meditation before launching into their morning routine. You can observe or join in as the sun rises over the lake.

Breakfast follows, then a trip down to the floating village before riding in an ox-cart (traditional village transportation). After a midday break at your hotel, the tour picks up again in the afternoon for a visit to Angkor Wat (BYO Park ticket). You might just see the temple with fresh eyes after a morning of pure zen.

Cambodian Buddhist Water Blessing

I couldn’t think of a better way to end your visit to Siem Reap than with a traditional Buddhist ceremony to bid you good luck, safe travels and a long life. This 90-minute tour takes you to the ancient Wat Arang Pagoda in rural Siem Reap where monks perform two different types of blessing: one involving a light sprinkle, and the other a proper soaking. Sarongs are provided to change into, and temple donations are included in the price.

Where to stay in Siem Reap

13 Day Trips from Siem Reap

For many visitors, Siem Reap is the gateway to the largest group of religious buildings ever built – The Angkor complex.

No trip here is complete without taking a few days to explore all the temples, but they’re not the only reason that Siem Reap is Cambodia’s premier tourist destination.

When you’ve had enough of temples, discover Cambodia’s natural beauty in the national parks and the surrounding lakes and mountains. Immerse yourself in the traditional culture of floating and stilt villages while getting to meet friendly locals.

Don’t want to venture so far out of the city? Here, you’ll find some of the country’s best local and international cuisine, superb shopping, and even Cambodia’s most famous circus.

You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to accommodation, too – from cheap and cheerful hostels to luxurious spas, this place really does have it all.

This handy guide will help you to pick the top things to do on your trip to Siem Reap.

1. Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Not only Cambodia’s top tourist attraction but in recent years voted as #1 in the world by Lonely Planet and Trip Advisor, to name just a few; there aren’t enough superlatives to describe Angkor Wat. The fantastically preserved temple is visited by millions every year, thanks to its unparalleled beauty.

Most travelers have seeing a sunrise or a sunset over Angkor Wat on their bucket list, and with good reason — it’s an incredible sight. Just remember, it’s going to be really crowded and you might have to fight for space to get that perfect snap.

There are several ways to see Angkor Wat: you can hire a tuk-tuk, or if you feel you can cope with the heat, why not try renting a bicycle?

Recommended tour :  Angkor Wat Full-Day Small-Group Sunrise Tour

2. See the other Angkor temples

Ta Prohm

Yes, Angkor Wat is the most recognizable emblem of the ancient city, but it would be a crime not to visit the other temples and monasteries in the area. The most popular are Bayon, Banteay Srei, and a particular highlight is Ta Prohm.

You may recognize Ta Prohm if you’ve seen Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Originally built in 1186 as a monastery/learning center, it’s smaller than several of the buildings in the Angkor complex, but one of the most visited as it has almost been completely consumed by the surrounding jungle.

Look out for the hand-sized stegosaurus carving in the temple. No one is sure whether it’s a recent addition — and therefore a hoax — or if the ancient Khmers had discovered dinosaur fossils.

You can see these temples alone as a day trip, or if you don’t want to rush, visit them over 3-4 days.

3. Banteay Srei and the Cambodian landmine museum

Banteay Srei Temple, Cambodia

Banteay Srei — also known as the Citadel of Women, the tiny temple, and the pink temple — is another of the main temples of the Angkor complex, which many people regard as the most beautiful. However, there are some other compelling reasons to visit.

Banteay Srei offers tourists the opportunity to immerse themselves in Cambodian culture, with village walks, ox-cart rides, and farm visits. If you have more time on your hands, you can even stay in one of 13 homestays and learn about local life.

Banteay Srei is also home to the Cambodian landmine museum. The museum works with NGOs to raise awareness and educate visitors about the dangers and prevalence of landmines in the country.

Available tour :  Full-Day Banteay Srei and Angkor Grand Tour

4. Tonle Sap Lake

Tonle Sap Lake

Spend the day seeing one of Cambodia’s natural wonders half an hour south of Siem Reap. Tonle Sap is Asia’s largest freshwater lake, where you can take a cruise or visit the villages on the shore.

Over 3 million people around the whole lake call these villages home. The villages often boast floating markets or stilted houses.

Tonle Sap is a great place for animal lovers. Not only are there over 100 species of water birds, but you can see geckos, snakes, crocodiles, turtles, and tortoises here too.

It’s important to remember that during the dry season, the lake flows out into the Mekong River. You’re better off doing a cruise during the rainy season, as your boat is much less likely to get stuck in the mud.

Suggested tour :  Sunset Dinner Tour: Tonle Sap Lake Floating Village

5. Kampong Khleang

Kampong Khleang

The remote floating village of Kampong Khleang, located on the north-east shores of Tonle Sap, is the largest on the lake.

Here, you can see houses suspended on stilts, buy local handicrafts and food at the day and night markets, and even visit a local floating school.

One of the most alluring ways to reach the village is by taking a boat through the flooded forest, where you’ll be sailing among the treetops. Keep your eyes peeled to see snakes, frogs, and huge spiders.

Available tour :  Kompong Khleang Floating Village: Full-Day from Siem Reap

6. Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary and Biosphere reserve

Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary

There are three biosphere reserves on Tonle Sap Lake. Prek Toal, in the North-West corner, is popular with bird-enthusiasts and regular tourists alike, thanks to the sheer variety of birdlife that you can see here. It’s actually one of the largest and most important breeding grounds for water birds in South East Asia.

Across the lake, there are several observation towers and viewing platforms. If you want to get up close and personal with the birds, you can take a rowing boat out onto the lake to get a closer look at their breeding grounds.

When you’ve exhausted your camera and your binoculars, head to one of the floating restaurants on Tonle Sap lake and enjoy the delicious local cuisine.

Available tour :  Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary and Great Lake Tour in Cambodia

7. Phnom Kulen national park

Phnom Kulen national park

Phnom Kulen — or lychee mountain — is considered by the Khmer people as the most sacred mountain in Cambodia.

At the top of the mountain, you will find a beautifully carved reclining Buddha and a pagoda.

Surrounding the mountain is a national park, which boasts a mighty waterfall. The waterfall runs into the valley of 1,000 lingas. What are lingas? They are a phallic fertility symbol, which can be found in the Kbal Spean river. The riverbed is decorated with hundreds of the symbols, both above and below the water.

Suggested tour :  Full-Day Kulen Waterfall and 1000 Lingas Tour

8. Kompong Phluk

Kompong Phluk, Cambodia

Much like Kampong Khleang, Kompong Phluk is a group of three floating villages on the shores of Tonle Sap. However, for a more authentic experience, this is an excellent place to go; it receives much fewer foreign tourists than Kampong Khleang.

You can only get here by boat, which means a trip on the calm waters of Tonle Sap. There are definitely worse ways to pass a morning or afternoon.

Don’t forget your camera, as you can get some jaw-dropping shots of the sunset over the vast lake.

Recommended tour :  Kompong Phluk Floating Village Tour from Siem Reap

9. Battambang

Battambang

The province of Battambang can be found to the west of Siem Reap, with a provincial capital of the same name.

There are more temples, colonial French architecture, and a memorial to the victims of the Khmer Rouge regime called the Well of Shadows.

Out of the city, see countryside vistas from bamboo trains. Then, take a trip to the killing caves to learn more about Cambodia’s all too recent history. These are a reminder of the brutal Khmer Rouge regime and a worthwhile but sobering experience.

On a lighter note, there’s another cave nearby where you can witness one of nature’s wonders. Every sunset, people gather to watch a huge exodus of bats flying out of the cave. Because there are so many, it can take as long as 20 minutes.

10. West Baray lake

West Baray lake

A favorite day out for local families is West Baray lake. Located close to the walled city of Angkor Thom, it is an ancient, man-made lake where you can spend the day sleeping off your temple exhaustion in a hammock. It’s also a great place to try local Cambodian cuisine.

The water isn’t completely hygienic, but you’ll see many Cambodian families having a swim here and enjoying the sun. Unlike Tonle Sap, there aren’t any crocodiles or snakes in the reservoir, so you’re at least safe on that front.

If you’re feeling withdrawal symptoms, don’t worry about it. After all, there are — yep, you guessed it — more temples.

11. Phnom Bok

Phnom Bok Temple

Moving from West Baray to East Baray now, where you can visit the stunning Phnom Bok. For any hikers who haven’t yet had their fill of temples, this is the one for you.

Constructed up 640 stones steps, Phnom Bok is perched atop a hill and offers spectacular panoramas of the Kulen mountains. You can even see Angkor Wat from here.

One thing to look out for is the two frangipani trees which loom over the ruined towers. Some people think that this gives the ruin the appearance of having a crazy haircut.

12. Koh Ker

Koh Ker

You can find Koh Ker in a sparsely-populated area deep in the jungle. Once the capital of the Khmer empire, the almost forgotten seven-story pyramid is now enveloped by ever-encroaching trees and plants.

Koh Ker is great if you want a break from the hordes of tourists at the main Angkor temples. If you’re lucky, you might even have the 30 or so buildings to yourself.

The best news? You can climb the pyramid. Spend some time at the top of this mysterious archaeological marvel to take in the fabulous views.

13. Peung Tanorn

Peung Tanon

There is a relatively unknown natural wonder located 60km north of Siem Reap called Peung Tanorn. Scattered across a hillside are rocks of many shapes and sizes, providing a beautiful view of the picturesque Cambodian countryside.

There’s a local community near the site, where the chief will happily welcome you. The rocks are located at the top of a hill, about 100m up. It’s a short hike up to the top, but the views are worth getting out of breath for.

Although the rock formations are undoubtedly beautiful, the journey is a big part of the adventure on this trip. You’ll see a side to Cambodia that is absent in Siem Reap – endless paddy fields, children by ponds hunting the catch of the day, and noisy bovine traffic jams.

Siem Reap 4 Day Itinerary | What You’ll Do

Siem Reap 4 Day Itinerary – 4 Spellbinding Days Exploring the Temples of Siem Reap with a Local Expert.

  • Pick up from the Siem Reap SAI airport and transfer to the hotel.
  • Stay and relax at the hotel, take it easy, and go sightseeing in Siem Reap.
  • Early pick up from the hotel and head to the Angkor ticket office for a rapid stop (few minutes) to get the Angkor Pass for 3 days.
  • We make our way to Preah Palilay. (Spiritual blessings and monk blessings here at the local pagoda)
  • We proceed to the Walk of the Kings in Angkor Thom, including Bayon, Terrace of Elephants, Baphuon, and other structures.
  • Take a trip to Angkor Wat (around two hours).
  • Around one to two o’clock, return to the Hotel.
  • Evening cultural show and dinner.

The second day is best to start at opening time at Preah Palilay (incredible when no people are around!), and continue with the walk to see Phimeanakas, Baphuon, Terrace of Elephants, Terrace of the Leper King, reaching Bayon temple (it a walking path so we need the early morning time!)

Next, you will take pictures at the Victory Gate and enjoy a concise walk on the ancient walls to arrive at the famous Khmoch Gate (Gate of the Dead) for more pictures and walk back.

Explore Next, you will visit Angkor Wat, and we can estimate you will be back at the Hotel around 1 or 2 pm.

In this second day, I would use the evening time to include the local buffet with cultural performance one evening from 7-9 p.m. at Morakot Angkor Restaurant (On us! transportation to and from the Morakot Angkor Restaurant will also be included. Our guide will organize the hotel pickup and ensure your return after a delightful evening.)
  • Early pickup to arrive at Banteay Srei by 7:30 am.
  • Visit Banteay Srei temple.
  • Continue to Banteay Samre temple.
  • See East Mebon temple.
  • Visit Pre Rup, Ta Som, Neak Pean temples (can have lunch at Neak Pean).
  • Explore Preah Khan temple.

MySiemReaptours user- Sydney – March 28, 2024

Mr. Brown made Angkor unique. His knowledge of each temple was amazing, but his ability to develop relationships was truly extraordinary. He asked Buddhist monks to bless our journey in a short ceremony one morning. We had a lovely night of cross-cultural conversation and making memories with his friend’s family over a home-cooked lunch. Mr. Brown’s kind energy and ‘pinch me’ moments reignited my passion and revealed the power of deeper travel.

David P. – London – March 28, 2024

When my family books a private tour, we have very high expectations – and Mr. Brown blew them all away. His energetic love for Angkor was contagious at each stop. We loved his flexibility to tailor the pace to our interests and adapt as we discovered new fascinations along the way. My teenagers were riveted by his storytelling! From spiritual rituals to stumbling upon secret nooks, Mr. Brown consistently wowed us with extraordinary experiences we’d never have found alone. Absolutely the best guide we’ve ever had!

Travelers from New York – March 28, 2024

Mr. Brown is simply incredible! His knowledge of Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples is encyclopedic, but he presents it in such an engaging and passionate way. Under his guidance, the ancient stones truly came alive with stories. From securing early access to beat the crowds to his personal connections giving us behind-the-scenes experiences, every day with Mr. Brown unveiled new wonders. He tapped into all my senses to build an unforgettable journey into Cambodia’s fascinating history and culture. A true master of his craft!

The Ultimate 4-Day Siem Reap Travel Itinerary for a Perfect Trip to Cambodia

Cambodia is one of the best places to visit in Southeast Asia, and my four-day Siem Reap travel itinerary will help you to organise your own perfect trip to this unique country.

The main attraction in Siem Reap is undoubtedly the Angkor Archaeological Park , where visitors can see the formidable Angkor Wat – the biggest religious site in the world.

It is also here that visitors will find the famous Siem Reap temples of Bayon and Ta Prohm, brought to the world’s attention after being featured in the Tomb Raider films.

Useful Information About Siem Reap

Why you need four days in siem reap.

When planning my Siem Reap travel itinerary, I knew I would be at the end of my 3-month world trip , and I wanted to experience the Angkor temples in Siem Reap without feeling rushed.

For this reason, I decided to stay in Siem Reap for four days to allow me enough time to visit the ancient Angkorian temples at my own pace and also have free time at my hotel to relax. I was shattered and needed a rest after travelling to eight different countries over 90 days!

Spending four days in Siem Reap also allowed me to experience some of the attractions this Cambodian hotspot had to offer besides the Angkorian temples.

In this post, you will find essential information on how to visit Siem Reap and a Siem Reap travel itinerary similar to the one I used during my trip. I hope it will help other travellers plan their trips to Cambodia.

Ta Prohm

What is Siem Reap Like?

Siem Reap is like nowhere I have ever been before, and that’s a fact! It is a bustling town that is steeped in history, from its famous jungle temples to its turbulent war-torn past.

Siem Reap is a place that opens its heart to visitors and leaves them with a yearning to return.

The main town is busy and noisy, but strangely it all adds to its charm.

You will discover fabulous restaurants cooking authentic Khmer and Western dishes. And luxury hotels allow you to leave the backpacker trail behind and pamper yourself without breaking the bank.

There are many great things to do in Siem Reap besides visiting the incredible Angkor temples.

Visit a museum, discover Cambodia’s past, watch traditional dance shows, or even participate in a cookery class.

Do You Need a Cambodia Visa

Depending on your country, you may need a visa to enter Cambodia.

Flight Routes and Times to Siem Reap

We arrived in Siem Reap from Hanoi after spending  two weeks in Vietnam . The flight from Hanoi to Siem Reap is one hour and 45 minutes.

If you are planning a two-centre trip to Cambodia, staying in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, the flight time between the two is 55 minutes.

If you fly into Siem Reap from Bangkok in Thailand, the flight time is 60 minutes.

There are no direct flights from the UK to Siem Reap. Travellers would need to book connecting flights in one of the leading flight hubs in Asia.

Transport from Siem Reap Airport to Siem Reap Town

You can take a taxi from the airport for the 20-minute journey to the town centre for around $10.

Or why not pre-book an airport transfer to Siem Reap town so that a car will be waiting for you on arrival?

Getting Around Siem Reap

Siem Reap Town is a walkable city and will allow you to see the city on foot. Tuk-tuks are a cheap and easy way of getting around Siem Reap for tourists and locals and for travelling to the Angkor temples.

Currency in Cambodia

American dollars are the preferred currency in Cambodia, although small Cambodian notes are handy for tipping or buying from local stalls.

I used the Caxton app to pre-load currency and local ATMs in Siem Reap to withdraw what I needed during my four days in Siem Reap.

Day One of the Four Days in Siem Reap Itinerary

Morning – breakfast and a swim.

Wake up to the sights and sounds of Siem Reap!

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel, spend your first morning relaxing around your hotel pool, and plan which temple you want to visit on your first afternoon in Cambodia.

Afternoon – Visit Bayon Temple

Around 1 pm – Hail a tuk-tuk from outside your accommodation, negotiate a price and hop aboard.

Make sure your driver knows you need to buy an Angkor Pass , as this is your first day in Siem Reap. Also, make sure he knows which temple you want to see.

Angie’s Tip: Get your hotel receptionist to write down your instructions in Cambodian so you can show them to your tuk-tuk driver.

I chose to visit Bayon Temple on my first day in Siem Reap, and it became one of my favourite temples in Angkor.

You can learn more in my post: Visit Bayon – The Smiling Face Temple in Cambodia .

10.30 pm Wander back past Siem Reap’s night markets and pick up a souvenir. Or head to Pub Street, home to Siem Reap nightlife.

We walked through Pub Street and decided it wasn’t for us. It was loud and brash and not where we wanted to spend our time in Siem Reap.

It is a popular tourist haunt, but it’s not somewhere I would include on my Siem Reap travel itinerary.

10 pm Return to the hotel and enjoy late-night drinks at the bar.

Last Day of the Four Days in Siem Reap Itinerary

10 am Leave your Siem Reap hotel and wander into town for breakfast at Brother Bong Cafe .

Reflections of Cambodia

Cambodia is, without a doubt, one of the world’s most intriguing places to visit and somewhere that is hard to forget. Siem Reap is a must-visit on any Cambodia Travel itinerary.

The feeling of seeing the iconic Bayon face temple and the monumental Angkor Wat will stay with me forever.

However, the ancient Angkorian temples are not the only reason that travellers plan a trip to Cambodia; many other places in Cambodia are also worth visiting.

You could head to Phnom Penh to see and hear the sights and sounds of Cambodia’s capital city or take time out and relax on one of Cambodia’s beautiful golden beaches.

One thing is for sure, time spent in Cambodia will be the trip of a lifetime.
