"Where do I start?! This was one of our favorite experiences of our entire week! Lexi, the "winetender" was knowledgeable, super friendly and fabulous host. Captain Shane was eager to share the boats history which was quite interesting. We cruised out to Emerald Bay where we got close to the Vikingsholm Castle and Lexi shared the history of the castle and the tea room on Fannette Island - all super pretty from the water. The wines were tasty and the boat was super clean - our family loved every minute!"

6 Lake Tahoe-based cruises that offer wine, full bars

Entertainment Entertainment | Jul 13, 2018

lake tahoe wine tasting cruise

Summer at Tahoe means many things, but it is essentially synonymous with time spent on the lake itself. While few experiences beat an afternoon or evening cruising along the crystal clear water, it’s made better when you have a drink in hand.

Consider these six booze-included cruise companies when planning your next excursion on Lake Tahoe.

Tahoe Cruises

Tahoe Cruises hits the water with its 80-foot luxury yacht, the Safari Rose, offering a few different options for enjoying spirits on board.

The lunch cruise and Sunset Champagne Cruise include a guided tour of Tahoe’s West and South shores, along with stops in Emerald Bay and access to a full bar. There’s also the seasonal South Shore Sightseeing Cruise, which offers half-priced drinks throughout the trip’s duration.

Support Local Journalism

But the true highlight is the near-weekly Sunset Winemaker Cruise: A different winery is the star on every excursion, which means you’ll never have the same experience twice. On each trip, a sommelier is on board to offer niche knowledge you won’t find elsewhere. On tap: Rancho Sisquoc Winery is highlighted on Wednesday, July 18, and Niner Wine Estates on Wednesday, July 25.

Each cruise leaves from Ski Run Marina. Learn more at http://www.tahoecruises.com .

Tahoe Tastings

Cruises aboard the vintage Golden Rose specialize in wine. The 1953 Chris Craft Venetian Water Taxi departs from Tahoe Keys Marina and circles Emerald Bay prior to returning to South Lake Tahoe on each cruise.

Each journey allows attendees to taste eight different wines — including sparkling, whites and reds — from locations such as Napa Valley, Anderson Valley and El Dorado, Amador and Placer counties, among others. The lineup is hand-selected and each wine is exclusive to the winery tasting room and Golden Rose.

Tahoe Tastings offers both mid-day and sunset cruises. Visit http://www.tahoetastings.com for more information.

Tahoe Bleu Wave

According to its website, this 1966 Million Dollar Classic Yacht has traveled the globe and now resides on Lake Tahoe. The 79-foot vessel boasts a full bar, party bow and more, and services the entire lake.

Most of the cruises travel to Emerald Bay from Tahoe Keys Marina. Can’t make it this summer? Don’t worry: Tahoe Bleu Wave makes the trek year-round. Check out http://www.tahoebleuwave.com for details.

Cruise Tahoe

Cruise Tahoe invites guests aboard its 1950 wood cruiser, called The Tahoe, for one of its two excursions: the Emerald Bay Cruise and Vikingsholm Castle Walking Tour, or the Thunderbird Lodge Cruise and Tour.

The former includes a visit to Vikingsholm Castle (attendees disembark The Tahoe for a moderate, half-hour walking tour), and on the return journey patrons receive wine and light appetizers. The latter is a longer journey, and The Tahoe leaves the Zephyr Cove marina in the morning. Guests are able to purchase a Bloody Mary or Mimosa, view lakefront estates and learn Tahoe history as they travel to Thunderbird Lodge.

Visit http://www.cruisetahoe.com for everything you need to know.

M.S. Dixie II and Tahoe Paradise

Zephyr Cove Resort and Lake Tahoe Cruises host a variety of on-the-water fun onboard the M.S. Dixie II, a 500-passenger paddle wheeler, and Tahoe Paradise, a two-story luxury yacht.

The M.S. Dixie II is home to both daytime and sunset cruises, as well as holiday cruises — check the schedule for all the details. On Saturday evenings this summer, the Tahoe Paradise sets off for the Sipping at Sundown Cruise, which features live music, a specialty cocktail menu, curated wine list and light hors d’oeuvres.

Check out http://www.zephyrcoveresort.com for more information.

Tahoe Sailing Charters

Hop aboard a sailboat for an afternoon or sunset cruise courtesy of Tahoe Sailing Charters, based in Tahoe City. The company has called the basin home since 2004, and offers trips for guests of all ages. Its 50-foot sailboat, the Tahoe Cruz, sets sail both in the afternoon and at sunset.

Each ride includes beer, chardonnay, pinot grigio and non-alcoholic beverages for the under-21 crowd. The boat fills up quickly, so be sure to reserve tickets early.

Wine on the Water: Tahoe Tastings wine cruise

lake tahoe wine tasting cruise

Living 13 miles north of Lake Tahoe, I sometimes forget I’m close to one of the world’s most beautiful bodies of water. Now, as I sip bubbly in the cozy cabin of “The Golden Rose,” Capt. Steve Henderson guides us out of South Lake Tahoe’s Tahoe Keys Marina toward Emerald Bay. I remark on how Tahoe’s impossibly blue waters marry with the sparkling summer skies.

“The Golden Rose” is owned by Diondra and Shane Colquhoun of Tahoe Tastings . Since 2016, Tahoe Tastings has offered two-hour, wine-tasting cruises Wednesdays through Sundays from May through October.

“Instead of a wine bar ashore, we created a floating one so our guests could enjoy wines on the water.” –Diondra Colquhoun

A Chris Craft cruiser built in 1953, “The Golden Rose” was partially sunk and almost destroyed by a blizzard in the Puget Sound in 1996. Before being scrapped, the owner of a whale-watching company saw her and painstakingly restored her as a Venetian water taxi.

Wines on the water Diondra and Shane Colquhoun once dreamed of opening a wine bar on land. Then Shane found “The Golden Rose” for sale.

“We bought her and shipped her to South Lake Tahoe,” Diondra says. “Instead of a wine bar ashore, we created a floating one so our guests could enjoy wines on the water.”

After our sparkling wine toast, hostess/server Kelly Cunov begins pouring generous tastes of seven additional wines to guests from as far away as Maine and Texas. The wine list — curated to make good wine more approachable — changes every few months.

Differentiating Tahoe Tastings from a winery tasting is the variety of wineries represented, all while cruising on Lake Tahoe. My favorite offering is a 2020 Balletto Russian River Pinot Gris. The wines are paired with a charcuterie platter with sweet, ripe fruit; soft and hard cheeses; salami and chocolate raisins surrounded by flowers. Guests can pre-order cheese platters through Tahoe Tastings from On Board, a caterer based in South Lake Tahoe, or bring their own food.

A taste of beautiful Emerald Bay Glasses in hand, we pass by Eagle Point — a prime bald eagle, viewing spot — at the entrance to Emerald Bay, then by Fannette Island, the only island in Lake Tahoe. We anchor near Vikingsholm Castle, where Capt. Henderson recounts a history of the castle-turned-museum. It was built in 1928 by Laura Josephine Knight , mostly from materials found near Emerald Bay, on 270 lakefront acres then priced at $250,000.

As we head back to the marina, I chat with Kendyl, Ellen and Bill, who are taking the cruise for the second time.

“We came back because we love the wine and appreciate the cruise’s intimacy and personalization,” says Ellen. “It’s such a charming experience that we want to bring every visitor.” | (530) 494-9222, tahoetastings.com

Don't Miss the Boat - Lake Tahoe Booze Cruise

By: Cam Schilling

Is it even a true summer if you don’t make the quintessential lake trip? Is it even a true lake trip if you don’t enjoy some boating on the water? Tahoe boats and watersports , in general, are staples to Lake Tahoe, and many would say the key to doing summer the right way. You don’t need to strap into a wakeboard or jump on a jet ski either, in fact, some of the best fun on the water doesn’t require you to physically do much at all. Put things on pause for a bit without sacrificing your time in Tahoe and spend a day relaxing along one of the various leisurely Lake Tahoe booze cruises.

Booze Cruise in Emerald Bay Lake Tahoe

In Tahoe we don’t raise the bar, we are the bar, and in this case, we take relaxation seriously. We adventure hard, we chill hard. Hop aboard your vessel, put a drink in those hands, and leave it to the captain to escort your crew around the lake. All the while enjoying some good company and indulge in the beauty of Lake Tahoe’s beaches, hidden harbors, and shorelines. Choose to explore spots on the water you haven’t seen before, maybe zip up to North Shore for an afternoon, or just pull the anchor and coast for a drifting beach party.

A Lake Tahoe Cruise is the Way to Properly Chill Out

There are many ways to cruise Lake Tahoe, but cruising with a drink in hand will have you properly chilled out. The summer sun is still hot, and be honest with yourself, lounging on the lake with a designated driver is an enticing plan for any day. Wine, beer, cocktails, whatever floats your boat, you might even learn a thing or two.

Tahoe Tastings Cruise

See the Lake and Sip Wine on a Lake Tahoe Wine Cruise

Tahoe Tastings is a wine tasting adventure. For this one, you’ll be on a vintage Golden Rose 1953 Chris Craft Venetian Water Taxi, and you’ll get to taste exquisite hand-selected wines from eight different regions of Northern California. These wines are exclusive to Tahoe Tastings and not available anywhere else besides the respective winery tasting rooms (and available for purchase after your tour!), thus a great opportunity to try some incredible wine from this region. This is your best bet for not only a tour of what Lake Tahoe has to offer but also a tour through Northern California wineries. Between sparkling, white and red, you’ll get a bit of everything for this wine on the water cruise.

Rum Runner Cruise

The Rum Runner Lake Tahoe Booze Cruise

Camp Richardson’s Rum Runner, a drink so good they bought a boat and made a Lake Tahoe booze cruise for it… The Rum Runner is Camp Richardson’s 55-ft yacht equipped with open and closed deck options, and of course, the revered Rum Runner cocktail served up to your heart’s content. The Rum Runner makes its hour and a half long excursion to Emerald Bay and back daily. You can also book it for a private event or celebration. For a detailed look at what you can expect, check out this quick video or read our Rum Runner blog for more on what to expect.

Safari Rose Cruise Lake Tahoe

Tahoe Cruises’ Safari Rose has been around for a while, and for good reason with fun new ways to see the lake on their elegant 80-foot yacht. This year (yes, into winter) they’ve taken the always picturesque Emerald Bay cruise to the next level with the Sunset Wine Cruise . Each trip features family-owned and operated wines from California, and each winery will have a Sommelier on board for an all-around great learning and tasting experience. It gets even better with raffles, giveaways, and hors-d’oeuvres for guests to enjoy during the cruise.

Cruise Tahoe

Bonus: Cruise & Walking Tours by Cruise Tahoe .

The crew from Cruise Tahoe offers two cruise and walking tour combos, which is an ideal way to do it all at once if you’re interested in stopping to check out some cool old architecture and artifacts. The Emerald Bay Cruise is paired with a Vikingsholm Castle Walking Tour allowing you to hop out, explore some neat south shore history and relax at the beach for lunch before the return trip. This tour comes with light food and wine. The Thunderbird Lodge Cruise & Tour also allows you to step back in time on their 1950 wood cruiser to the historic Thunderbird Lodge. The cruise includes a light continental breakfast, walking tour of the Thunderbird Lodge and picnic-style lunch on the property. Bloody Marys and mimosas available as you wish!

Please drink responsibly and be sure to have a designated driver.
