neckar river cruise stuttgart

The Neckar takes its name from a Celtic word meaning wild water and is one of the major tributaries of the River Rhine . It flows entirely within the borders of Germany, rising in the Black Forest and flowing into the Rhine at the city of Mannheim.

The Neckar's banks host contrasting sights that display the history of the area. The industrial section, between Plochingen and Stuttgart shows Germany's role at the forefront of both historic and modern industry, whilst the section of river between Stuttgart and Lauffen displays a much more peaceful and bucolic side to the river. Here, vineyards and castles can be seen on the steep valley sides and cyclists joyfully ride parallel to the Neckar.

There are many major towns and cities along the banks of the river, some of which you will get to visit during your Neckar River cruise. It flows through Rothenburg, Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg but the most likely places you'll visit are Heidelberg and the ancient town of Eberbach. Heidelberg is one of the most romantic cities in Germany and is also home to the country's oldest university, whilst Eberbach offers a look into the past via its historic Old Town.

Neckar River

The Neckar is a 362 kilometre long river that flows through the south-western part of Germany.

It rises in the Schwarzwald-Baar district near Schwenningen at an elevation of 706 metres and eventually joins the Rhine river at Mannheim.

There are many historic towns and cities along the river Neckar. The banks of the river are also an important part of the winemaking industry in Germany, especially in the Swabian Alb area where it passes through Tübingen and other scenic towns.

View of the historic houses along the river Neckar in Tübingen

The Neckar is more than just a beautiful river with a few attractive vineyards on its banks. It is an important economic factor for the region's towns and villages.

The river has been used for trade and power generation for centuries. Exploring the Neckar river is a rewarding way to learn more about the heritage of this part of south-west Germany.

The Geography and History of the Neckar River

The Neckar River flows through southwestern Germany, mainly in Baden-Württemberg, with a short section through Hesse.

Along the Neckar Valley, some cities and municipalities have thrived for centuries, offering a glimpse into the captivating history of this region.

One such city is Tübingen, home to the Eberhard Karls University, established in 1477. As you delve into the Middle Ages, you'll discover how significant the river has been as a source of transportation, trade, and sustenance for those living along its banks.

The Neckar in Bad Canstatt near Stuttgart

Stuttgart, the capital and largest city of Baden-Württemberg, is on the Neckar river. The city became a centre of textile production, engineering and railway construction in the 19th century. Stuttgart emerged as a leading centre for car manufacturers in the following century.

The river Neckar played an important role in the industrial growth of Stuttgart, providing water supply, transportation and power generation. The Neckar also shaped the urban landscape of Stuttgart, with many bridges, parks and cultural venues along its banks.

Heidelberg lies on the east bank of the river, which served as a vital transportation route for trade and travel as the town developed.

The city was built at the point where the Neckar leaves its narrow valley through the Odenwald hills and enters the wide plain towards Mannheim.

Heidelberg Castle offers fabulous views of the river traffic on the river and the historic Alte Brücke allows visitors to enjoy the views from both sides.

Taking a boat ride along the Neckar is a popular way to explore Heidelberg and see the city from a different perspective.

Boat tours typically depart from the Old Bridge or from nearby towns like Neckarsteinach.

Essential facts about the Neckar River

  • Source: in the Black Forest, near Schwenningen
  • Length: 362 km (225 miles)
  • Main tributaries: Kocher, Jagst, Rems, and Fils
  • Major towns and cities: Tübingen, Stuttgart, Heidelberg and Mannheim

The Landscape and Climate of the Neckar Valley

The landscape of the Neckar Valley changes as the river flows from its source in the Swabian Jura to where it joins the Rhine.

At its source, the Neckar runs through steep valleys and gorges with lush forests and small waterfalls. As it flows northward towards Stuttgart, the valley opens up into rolling hills dotted with vineyards, orchards, and meadows.

The Neckar brushes the edges of the Odenwald Hills before reaching Heidelberg. The landscape along the Neckar river between Heidelberg and Mannheim is characterized by its broad floodplains, woods and meadows. This section of the river is relatively flat compared to the more hilly areas further south.

Vineyards along the Neckar near Stuttgart

One must-see feature of the Neckar Valley is its many vineyards. The region is renowned for producing high-quality wines such as Riesling and Trollinger.

The climate in the Neckar Valley is continental, with warm summers and cool winters.

Summer temperatures are quite mild and typically range from 20°C to 30°C.

The winter months are cold but rarely extreme, with temperatures averaging between -2°C and 7°C. Snowfall is relatively common in the hillier areas of the valley during winter.

Nature lovers will appreciate the diverse flora and fauna found throughout the Neckar Valley. The valley’s forests are home to deer, wild boars, foxes, and badgers.

Exploring the Neckar

The River Neckar has a rich history of navigation dating back to ancient times. However, it wasn't until the 20th century that the river was fully canalised and made navigable for larger vessels.

Today, the Neckar is an important waterway linking industrial centres such as Stuttgart and Heilbronn to the Rhine and beyond.

The river is a hub for transport, trade and tourism - all at the same time! The river is home to several ports that act as centres of commerce, logistics and cultural experiences.

There's always something going on on this active river. Whether you're enjoying a relaxing cruise on its tranquil waters or witnessing large barges transporting goods from one place to another.

River ferry on the Neckar in Heidelberg

But what really makes this river special are the picturesque buildings on both sides of the waterway. Castles perched on hillsides will take you back in time, while palaces showcase opulent architecture that hints at the royalty of the past - just like in Heidelberg, where you can explore the iconic Heidelberg Castle that towers over the old town below.

River cruises are available on the Neckar and offer visitors a unique experience to see some of the region's most beautiful sights from a different perspective. There are several options for river cruising along the Neckar, each with its own charm.

One popular option is a round trip cruise from Heidelberg. This type of river cruise typically lasts around 50 minutes and takes visitors up and down the river, offering stunning views of the city's iconic landmarks such as Heidelberg Castle, the Old Bridge and the Philosopher's Walk.

Another popular option is to take a day trip on one of the many boats that offer more extensive tours up and down the Neckar. These tours usually last between 4-5 hours and give passengers an excellent view of the changing scenery.

Several tour operators offer boat trips from Heilbronn that take visitors through the picturesque vineyards of Neckarsulm and Bad Wimpfen before returning to Heilbronn.

The Neckar in Art and Literature

Famous for its stunning sunsets and many picturesque locations, the Neckar offers a wealth of inspiration for those seeking artistic inspiration.

Over the years, the river has found its way into various forms of art, including paintings, poetry and novels.

One notable example is the work of Mark Twain, who wrote about his travels along the Neckar in "A Tramp Abroad". In this famous work, Twain recounts his experiences on a raft travelling from Heilbronn to Heidelberg.

Many artists have used the peaceful atmosphere of the Neckar to create engaging and enchanting works.

One of them was Carl Blechen, a German Romantic painter famous for his landscapes.

Blechen painted several scenes along the Neckar during his travels through Germany in the early 19th century. His painting 'View of Heidelberg Castle and City' depicts a stunning view of the ruins of Heidelberg Castle, perched on a hill overlooking the river valley below.

Another artist who painted scenes in the Neckar region was Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a German expressionist painter. Kirchner was drawn to the area by its natural beauty and spent time in towns such as Bad Wimpfen and Neckarsulm, painting scenes of local life as well as landscapes.

Take time to ‘explore, dream, discover’ on Neckar River

The Neckar-Käpt’n takes visitors on scenic day outings along the Neckar River.

Cruises include tours with the Neckar Käptn’s flag and largest ship the MS Wilhelma, as well as the  MS Stuttgart, MS Liberty and the “Partyfloss,” or party raft, according to Beatrix Töricht, spokeswoman for the Neckar-Käpt’n.

Patrons can choose between different tours and event cruises that take off from the Wilhelma pier in Bad Cannstatt.

The Max-Eyth-Lake cruise, for example, takes visitors on a tour of Stuttgart’s city districts Bad Cannstatt, Münster and Hofen. During the trip, patrons will pass the Max-Eyth-See, one of Stuttgart’s most popular leisure areas. The one-hour tour is offered Tuesday through Sunday at 12:30 p.m. and during the German summer break (July 25 to Sept. 7) at 1 p.m.

The Neckar Park tour offers soccer, party and car enthusiasts a glimpse into the world of automobiles, sports and the Cannstatter Wasen fest grounds. Visitors will pass the Cannstatt lock and stop at the Neckar Park. The Neckar Park marks the Cannstatter Wasen fest grounds, where the spring fest and beer festival is held annually, as well as the Mercedes-Benz Arena, home to Stuttgart’s soccer team. The Mercedes-Benz Museum next to the stadium boasts 125 years of automotive history.

For a good view of the Cannstatter Wasen fest grounds, Töricht recommends the Neckar Park tour when the spring fest or the Cannstatter beer festival is held.

The one-hour tour departs Wednesday through Sunday at 1:45 p.m. The tour is not offered during the German summer break.

During the Harbor tour, patrons cruise through the Cannstatt and Untertürkheim locks all the way to Stuttgart’s industrial harbor.

According to Töricht, the best way to explore a harbor is by boat. Visitors can see all the ships exporting or importing goods from the Neckar River, to the Rhine and the North Sea to the world or vice versa.

“Another highlight during the harbor tour is that people will have a beautiful view on one of Stuttgart’s landmarks, the Sepulchral Chapel on Württemberg Hill,” Töricht said.

The chapel was built by King Wilhelm I between 1820-24 for his beloved wife and Queen of Württemberg, Katharina Pawlowna.

The two-hour tour is offered through Oct. 20 each Wednesday and Thursday at 10:15 a.m.

All tours take off from the Wilhelma pier in Bad Cannstatt. But there are more stops throughout the Neckar-Käptn’s routes giving visitors the chance to hop on or off a boat.

“There are many different ways that people can combine a boat tour with a trip to a historic landmark or city that we pass during our cruises,” Töricht said.

Töricht recommends the Hessigheim cruise line from Marbach to Hessigheim, located 25 kilometers north of Stuttgart.

“The cruise from Marbach to Hessigheim is very scenic. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the wine hills and nice shores,” Töricht said. “The great thing about a boat trip is that people can always see two shores from different perspectives.”

Patrons can choose between taking the S-Bahn train to Marbach and then hop on the Neckar-Käpt’n or take off from the Wilhelma pier from Wednesday through Sunday at 11 a.m.

“For visitors to Stuttgart, a boat tour is ideal. During the tour, they are introduced to landmarks and sites and they can always come back on their own and explore more,” Töricht said.

The Relax Coffee Tour makes for a pleasant afternoon outing. Visitors can enjoy nature and scenery with coffee and cake. The three-hour tour takes off from the Wilhelma pier toward Remseck every Tuesday at 3 p.m.

For party enthusiasts, the event cruises offer a Disco Pasta Night with a pasta buffet and music. The “Flösserbrunch,” and the “Huckleberry’s Flossfahrt” are party rafts that offer both barbecue and drinks.  Another outing is the “Musik und Wein an Bord,” that promises an evening of wine and live music with accordion player Jörg Langer on board the Neckar-Käpt’n, according to Töricht.

“During a boat trip, visitors can get a panoramic view of the countryside and nature,” Töricht said. “It’s a wonderful way to get away from the everyday hustle, relax and dive into a different world on a slower pace.”

All Neckar-Käpt’n boats can be booked for groups and special occasions.

Patrons booking a tour on their birthdays can cruise for free if they bring a valid ID. Event cruises are exempt from the offer.

Landmarks or outings along the way include the Ludwigsburg Castle, Friedrich Schiller’s (famous German poet) birth home in Marbach, wine tastings in Besigheim and Hessigheim, and the Wilhlema Zoological and Botanical Garden (a five-minute walk from the pier).

Audio guides are available in English on the MS Wilhelma.

neckar river cruise stuttgart

We are planning to visit stuttgart this summer in june for 3days.

A few things i need help on are

How long does it take to reach heildelberg on the neckar river cruise? Could we halt in between to explore ?

Is it possible to cover heildelberg castle and city tour and return to stuttgart the same evening?

How far are the vineayards from stuttgart? we really want to take a vineyard tour with wine tasting.

Anyother highlight near stuttgart that should not be missed ?

After this.. we plan to head to munich for another 3 days and cover rothenberg too.. so would rothenburg be closer from stuttgart or is it advisable to reach munich and do a day trip from there ?

Other hightlights around munich apart fron king ludwigs castle ?

Many thanks,

Esslingen is an excellent choice. The train station is right next to the medieval downtown.

Kessler Sekt offers three tours. Their website is awful imho, but I like their Sekt (champagne).

http://www.kessler-sekt.de/de/website/tours.php

With 1 day in Stuttgart, 1 day in Heidelberg and 1 day in Esslingen, you are all set to go.

Heidelberg can be easily reached from Stuttgart by train. However, I would recommend going the other direction to our favorite town in Germany , Tuebingen. It is just quintessential Germany and the university there is of a similar age to Heidelberg's. The hilly cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, castle and interesting non-tourist shops make it an excellent destination in itself, and to make it even better there is the well-preserved medieval Bebenhausen Monastery next door, our favorite German monastery and just as good a sight as Tuebingen itself. I personally don't care for Heidelberg whose main attraction is the palace ruins best seen from a distance such as on or across the river, and better yet, from the air.

Stuttgart is Germany's largest city with vineyards, and they are extensive at that which is highly unusual for such a large European city. There are scenic panoramic walks through the vineyards with wineries and places to eat along the way. Our favorite one is the one from Obertuerkheim to the Wine Museum in Uhlbach which we used to make several times a year as it's so pleasant. These are described in http://www.stuttgarter-weinwanderweg.de . Note that the wines in the Wuerttemberg wine area are mainly reds, unlike most of the rest of Germany. Almost all of these wines are consumed locally, and Stuttgart has Germany's highest wine consumption per capita and many Weinstuben and Besenwirtschaften.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is much closer to Stuttgart than Munich and is about 1.5 hours away by car . Although it sits along the border of Baden-Wuerttemberg and Bavaria , access by train is only possible from Bavaria.

For other excellent things to see and do in and around Stuttgart, have a look at my posts in the thread https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g187275-i116-k6068438-Stuttgart_as_a_base-Germany.html where I have described most of the mentioned places plus many others.

> How long does it take to reach heildelberg on the neckar river cruise?

Not offered. Would need more than a day.

> Is it possible to cover heildelberg castle and city tour and return to stuttgart the same evening?

By train this is possible, but still pretty far for a day trip. There are many closer options.

Esslingen (10-15 by train)

http://www.esslingen-marketing.de/en/discover-2

Ludwigsburg Palace (Ludwigsburg is also 10-15 min by train)

http://barockerlebnis.de/en/home/

To Esslingen and Ludwigsburg you need just a VVS mini group day ticket for 3-4 zones: EUR 16,40.

Stuttgart Tourism

https://int.stuttgart-tourist.de/en

Rothenburg is not really in day trip distance using public transport, neither from Stuttgart nor from Munich . A fairly similar substitute could be Nördlingen, which could be done as a stopover en route (fairly exactly 2 hours from either city).

http://www.noerdlingen.de/Noerdlingen-entdecken/Historie-Baukunst

Don't ask me why they don't offer the brochures in English not for download, but will ship them free.

Thankyou all.. for such a detailed response and insight...it has surely given me better perspective to plan my trip 😊

Von der Saar zum Neckar

7-Nights CRUISE ON BOARD OF THE SWISS RUBY

From Saar to Neckar

  • DATES AND PRICES

Von der Saar zum Neckar

From the Saar to the Neckar - but via the Moselle and the Rhine. And so there are four rivers that you travel on these seven days. We weigh anchor in Saarbrücken and set course for Merzig and Trier on the Moselle via Saarlouis. Founded by the Romans, Trier has many well-preserved Roman monuments that you can discover on a relaxing shore excursion - including the Porta Nigra, remains of Roman bathhouses or the stone bridge over the Moselle. At noon we cast off again and sail via Koblenz and Eltville am Rhein to Heidelberg. There you can marvel at the Gothic Heiliggeistkirche, for example, or stroll through the romantic old town on an extended shore excursion. Finally, it goes via Heilbronn to Stuttgart, where your trip ends with many memories in the heart.

Saarbrücken

Saarbrücken

Saarbrücken is the capital of Saarland. The city offers its approximately 180,000 inhabitants several universities. Not only the numerous tourists are pleased with the castle, whose origins lie around the year 1,000. The castle ensemble also includes the listed Old Town Hall. Furthermore, there are several churches of different epochs to visit. The oldest is the Deutschherrenkapelle from the 13th century. The modern churches include, for example, the parish church Maria Königin, which was built in the fifties of the last century. Among the other sights, the German-French Garden stands out, where there is a park railroad, a cable car and a cemetery of honor. The city also has a zoo and a game park. Last but not least, Saarbrücken attracts many events that take place throughout the year. They range from film events and folk festivals to the Christmas market at the castle.

Saarlouis

In the very southwest of Germany, where green forests cover the gently rolling countryside, lies Saarlouis near the French border. The former fortress town can still be recognized at the parade ground, where the mighty commandant's building tells of times past. Today, people meet at the Grosser Markt to stroll through the old town. In the afternoon, cozy cafés beckon, in the evening a good wine in the numerous pubs between the old facades from the fortress era or from the Wilhelminian period. On the other hand, it is green at the old arm of the Saar, where the Vauban Island and the city garden are located: There, where once Louis XIV assumed one of the most beautiful places in the kingdom, even today guests and residents like to relax.

Merzig

The Saar flows leisurely through the middle of the old core town of Merzig. Between Trier and Saarbrücken, the popular shopping town stretches through densely wooded river valleys. "Capital of the green district" is what this town calls itself because of the extensive green landscapes right on its doorstep. And in the Wolf Park, the former inhabitants of the surrounding forests show themselves up close: white wolves await visitors here. In the historic town center, enjoy a break at the foot of the mighty Romanesque basilica of St. Peter. Or would you prefer a walk in the city park, under shady old trees? Shopping enthusiasts are drawn to the town from neighboring countries and the surrounding area - and Merzig meets this demand with numerous stores and boutiques.

Trier

Trier impresses with its buildings from the Roman era - first and foremost the well-preserved Porta Nigra. But also the churches of the city are worthwhile destinations during a visit. The oldest city in Germany was founded by the Romans around the year 16 BC under Emperor Augustus. Charlemagne made the city an archbishopric. In hardly any other German city are the legacies of the Romans as numerous as in Trier. You can even drink them in the form of wine. The wine terraces along the valleys of the Moselle and Saar rivers look back on 2000 years of history.

Treis-Karden

Treis-Karden

The gorgeous town of Treis-Karden is located directly on the Moselle River in one of the most beautiful areas of Germany. Among vacationers and hikers, it is especially known for its proximity to Eltz Castle. However, if you do not have enough time for a hike in your luggage, many exciting sights can also be discovered within the town: for example, you can pay a visit to the Maria Engelport monastery and attend masses or even concerts. In addition, you can look at the chapel or the so-called Lourdes Grotto there. Furthermore, a visit to the St. Castor church, known as Moseldom, as well as the fountain of the same name including sculpture is worthwhile. In addition to the monastery chapel, there is also the Chapel of St. Catherine, which dates back to the 15th century, and the Chapel of St. George, which is now used as a Protestant church. Since Treis-Karden was destroyed in large parts in the 2nd World War, the present beauty of the small town impresses all the more.

Koblenz

Koblenz already impresses with its unique location at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. The first port of call when visiting the city should therefore also be the so-called "German Corner" with its imposing Kaiser Wilhelm monument. Since 2002, it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Upper Middle Rhine Valley". A beautiful view of Koblenz and its two rivers opens up during a visit to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. Perched 120 meters above the Rhine, the 16th-century fortification is the second largest fortress still standing in Europe. Spectacular is already the ascent in a gondola of the cable car..

Eltville

Eltville in Hesse is a cozy little town on the north bank of the Rhine, between Mainz and Bingen. The old town is grouped around the Electoral Castle of Eltville, which stands almost directly on the banks of the Rhine. The castle dates back to the 13th century and was destroyed in 1635 during the Thirty Years' War; only the residential tower was rebuilt and has been preserved to this day. Today it houses a museum dedicated to the town and regional history of Eltville, as well as the tourist information office.   Next to the castle is the small rose garden, which is one of the most popular attractions of the town, especially in summer. Next to the castle, around the parish church of Saint Peter and Paul, is grouped the small old town of Eltville, which, however, consists of only a few alleys. Its center is the charming market square. Many of the houses here are built in the half-timbered style typical of Hesse, including the old town hall dating from 1535. The old town opens up to the Rhine with a beautiful promenade.

Heidelberg

From far away you can see the most famous landmark of the city - the Heidelberg Castle, which is enthroned on the slope of the Königstuhl. Up there you have a fantastic view over the city and the Neckar valley. From the old town, the castle ruins can be easily reached on foot or by mountain railroad. The romantic old town also invites you to stroll and feast. Many small stores, cafés and restaurants await visitors here. The Gothic Church of the Holy Spirit on the market square and the historic Old Bridge on the Neckar River are also worth a visit. Heidelberg is also home to Germany's oldest university. A popular vantage point is the Heiligenberg, which is home to an ancient Thing site and the ruins of the monastery of St. Michael.

Heilbronn

With about 125,000 inhabitants, Heilbronn is one of the major cities in Baden-Württemberg and is located on the banks of the Neckar River. It is known for some historical buildings, a wide range of cultural activities and picturesque green areas. Among the most imposing buildings is the Kilianskirche, whose oldest section dates back to the 13th century. Inside the church, the carved altar in late Gothic style made by Hans Seyfer is impressive. The Deutschhof, the Käthchenhaus and the town hall are also not to be missed on a tour of the city. The experimenta is known far beyond the city limits. This imposing building is home to a world of knowledge and experience and is located on an island on the banks of the Neckar River. For a shopping spree, visitors are drawn to Fleiner Strasse and Wollhausplatz in Heilbronn, as stores line up here. The gastronomic offer is also versatile in the city center and ranges from traditional Swabian cuisine to international cuisine.

Stuttgart

Welcome to the capital of Baden-Württemberg - Stuttgart. In addition to a special cultural density, great landscapes and lots of wine, there are plenty of leisure activities and sights in Stuttgart. The picture shows the New Palace and reminds of the Palace of Versailles in France, which one even served as inspiration for the impressive building in Stuttgart. Other places worth visiting are the TV Tower, the Museum StadtPalais or the largest multi-discipline house in Europe - the Staatstheaer Stuttgart - a three-discipline house with drama, opera and ballet..
