Whether you’re planning to bask on the beaches, scramble through the jungles, time-travel in historic townships or set up as a digital nomad in hip Hanoi, the chances are you’ll need a visa to visit Vietnam , except for short visits of less than 15 days.

But there’s good news – while there’s red tape to wriggle through, many nationalities can apply for an E-Visa online, saving time and money.

Vietnam imposed tight COVID restrictions at the height of the pandemic, but these days, you can visit without a Covid test or proof of vaccination. Getting hold of a visa has also become easier, with a dedicated government portal for E-Visa applications. Here’s what you need to know about the entry requirements for Vietnam.

Who needs a visa to visit Vietnam?

Whether or not you need a visa to visit Vietnam will depend on where you live and how long you’re planning to stay. Citizens of neighboring nations in Southeast Asia, including Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Laos, can visit for 30 days without a visa. Citizens of the Philippines can stay for 21 days visa-free, citizens of South Korea and Japan can stay without a visa for 15 days and citizens of Brunei and Myanmar can stay visa-free for 14 days.

How about travelers from Europe?

There’s good news for European travelers – citizens of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland can travel visa-free for 15 days, reflecting the fact that these countries were among the first foreign powers to recognize the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. British, German, French, Spanish and Russian citizens can also visit without a visa for 15 days.

What about everyone else?

Travelers from the rest of Europe and the rest of the world will need a visa to visit Vietnam, as will travelers from visa-exempt countries visiting for more than the approved number of days, and visitors coming for business or other non-tourism purposes.

How do I get a visa?

There are three ways to get hold of a visa. You can apply the old-fashioned way via the Vietnamese embassy or consulate in your home country (either in person or by post); you can apply for a Visa on Arrival via a Vietnamese visa agency; or you can apply for an E-Visa online before you travel.

A woman dives off a boat in a bay with vast limestone outcrops

How long are Vietnam visas valid?

Standard tourist visas are valid for 30 or 90 days. You can apply for either a single entry or multiple entries, and visas can be extended within Vietnam for an additional fee. For visas for business trips, contact your local Vietnamese embassy or consulate – there’s a list of overseas missions on the website of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs . Digital nomads generally travel on tourist visas.

What are the special visa rules for Phu Quoc Island?

Travelers visiting Phu Quoc – Vietnam’s best-loved tropical island – can stay for up to 30 days visa-free. This applies even if you don’t come from a visa-exempt country, but you must enter Phu Quoc by air. On arrival, you can apply for a visa allowing entry to the rest of Vietnam or stays of more than 30 days.

How do I apply for an E-Visa?

The government’s slightly confusing E-Visa portal is the place to apply for an electronic visa. These visas are valid for 30 days and allow a single entry. You can enter via any approved air, land, or sea border but the port of entry must be listed on your application. The process takes three working days, and the scheme is open to citizens of 80 countries, including most nations in Europe, the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

You’ll need to provide a high-resolution digital passport photo and a scan of your passport ID pages when you apply. Be sure to note down the registration number for your application – you’ll need this to access the downloadable PDF file containing your visa (print and carry two copies with you when you travel).

How do I apply for a Visa on Arrival?

If you fly into Vietnam and land at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City , Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi , or Da Nang International Airport in Da Nang , you can apply for a Visa on Arrival via an online visa agency such as Vietnam Visa Center or Vietnam Visa , but this is a more expensive option.

In fact, this is a two-part process. As well as paying a fee for the online application, you’ll need to pay a second fee on arrival in Vietnam for the visa to be physically added to your passport. The online application takes two working days to process, but you can also pay extra for an expedited one-day or four-hour service.

How much does a Vietnam visa cost?

Visa prices vary depending on where you obtain your visa – travelers who apply online pay different fees to people applying in person or by post at embassies and consulates. For a standard 30-day E-Visa, the fee is US$25. Contact your local embassy or consulate for fees for in-person or postal applications.

To get a Visa on Arrival, you must first pay a fee to a visa agency for a "visa pre-approval letter". For a single-entry visa, this costs around US$17 for 30 days and US$25 for 90 days. For a multiple-entry visa, the fee is around US$20 for 30 days and US$65 for 90 days.

You’ll need to pay a second fee, known as a "Stamping Fee", when you reach Vietnam, using foreign currency. This costs US$25 for a single-entry visa and US$50 for a multiple-entry visa. Different fees apply for visitors from most of Africa and the Middle East and some countries in Asia.

Applying for a visa – the practicalities

Whether you apply online or in person at your local embassy or consulate, your passport should be valid for at least six months after your proposed date of exit from Vietnam. You can enter on or after the date of entry you declare on the application form, but you must still exit by the expiry date printed on your visa.

If you apply in person or by post, you’ll also need to provide some passport photos with your application form. If you apply online, you’ll need high quality digital passport photos; for a Visa on Arrival, bring two 4cm by 6cm photos to hand over when you pay the stamping fee.

Can I extend my visa in Vietnam?

It isn’t too tricky to extend a tourist visa while in Vietnam, but you’ll need to enlist the help of a local visa agency. The procedure can take up to a week and you must apply before your original visa expires. It may be possible to get an extension of 15, 30 or 60 days, depending on the visa you currently hold.

Fees vary from agency to agency and depend on the duration of the extension. In practice, extensions are easiest to arrange in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Danang and Hue . Note that additional fees apply if you apply to extend your visa in a different location to the city where you first arrived in Vietnam.

Have a Question?

How to get a visa for vietnam: frequently asked questions.

Travellers often have many questions regarding their upcoming trips. Where will you stay? What are your plans upon arrival? People who are traveling outside of their home countries may also ask, “What about a visa?”

Visas are often a necessary part of travelling internationally. The necessary steps to obtain a visa vary from country to country and depend on the traveller’s passport country. In the post below, we answer frequently asked questions regarding getting a visa to enter Vietnam. With the right guidance and planning, travellers can navigate the Vietnam visa process with ease.

 1.  What is a visa on arrival?

A visa on arrival (VOA) is a legal document approved by the Vietnam Department of Immigration. Some of the benefits of a VOA include:

  • Legitimacy : The Vietnam Department of Immigration is the authority that grants and approves each VOA.
  • Convenience : VOAs involve an easy online application and do not require you to send in your passport or passport photos before you travel. Also, VOA applications typically do not face delays.
  • Cost-effectiveness : VOAs are often the lowest cost method for obtaining a Vietnam visa. This benefit is particularly important for budget travellers who wish to travel inexpensively.
  • Speed : A traveller can complete a visa on arrival application within two working days. Often, if there is an emergency, the Department of Immigration may be able to grant a Vietnam visa within two to three hours. If you need an emergency visa on arrival, reach out to our team directly to discuss your emergency visa needs.

2. Are visas on arrival legitimate?

Yes, visas on arrival are legitimate. A Vietnam visa on arrival is a legitimate way to receive a visa to visit Vietnam, and in fact, visas on arrival are one of the most common ways that travellers to Vietnam source their visas. In addition to the legitimacy of VOAs, many people consider visas on arrival to be the most convenient, fastest, and affordable ways to obtain a Vietnam visa. In many cases, travellers can get entry visas as low as US $17 per visa, depending on a traveller’s length of stay and desired number of entries. The Vietnam Department of Immigration grants all types of visas on arrival. Travellers can then pick up their approved visas on arrival after landing at one of Vietnam’s international airports.

3.What is the visa approval letter?

The Vietnam Department of Immigration grants visa approval letters, which allow travellers to enter and exit Vietnam for a given period of time. With a visa approval letter, travellers can pick up your visa on arrival at one of the several international airports in Vietnam. These international airports include:

  • Ho Chi Minh City

At the airport, the entry authority will verify the details of the visa approval letter based on your passport and travel documents. As long as you have entered the correct information on your visa application, you should have no problems gaining entry into Vietnam with your visa approval letter. Once the immigration officer reviews your documents, the officer will stamp your Vietnam visa in your passport.

4.How long does it take to get the visa approval letter?

The Vietnam Department of Immigration processes visa approval letters and emails them to travellers typically within two business days of the traveller’s application. Processing days do not include Saturday, Sunday, and major national and international holidays. In some cases, travellers may be able to receive an expedited visa approval letter for an extra service fee. How much is a Vietnam visa on arrival with expedited processing? Expedited visa on arrival processing options include:

  • Processing within four to eight hours for an additional $20 per applicant.
  • Processing within one business day for an additional $10 per applicant.
  • Urgent processing on national or international holidays. For urgent processing, please call us or contact us via email for details and assistance

Please take note that the above urgent processing times do not apply between 12:00 PM Friday and 9:00 AM Monday, local time in Vietnam. Please consider the time difference between Vietnam and your application location. However, note that visa desks at Vietnam’s international airports are open 24/7. As long as you have your visa approval letter, you will still be able to get your Vietnam visa on a weekend arrival.

5. How do I receive my visa approval letter?

Receiving your visa approval letter is easy and convenient. We send travellers a scanned file of their visa approval letters via email. So, please be sure to provide us with your correct email address. You will need the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to open the file. Travellers will then need to print their visa approval letters and present their printed copies upon arriving into Vietnam.

6. Are there any exceptions for entry into Vietnam with a visa on arrival?

A visa on arrival is only valid for people who will arrive in Vietnam at one of Vietnam’s international airports. Travelers entering Vietnam by land or sea must visit a Vietnam Embassy to get their visa stamp. Vietnam immigration officials will accept visa approval letters at the following international airports in Vietnam:

  • Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi)
  • Tan Son Nhat International Airport (Ho Chi Minh City)
  • Danang Airport (Da Nang)
  • Cam Ranh Airport (Nha Trang)

There is a 15-day free visa exemption for some passport holders. The Vietnam Department of Immigraition offers this exemption to passport holders from the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, and Germany. Travelers from those countries can travel to Vietnam without a visa for 15 days. Passport holders from Japan, South Korea, Philippines, and Chile can also enjoy visa exempt stay. The visa-exempt stay duration for travellers from those countries is between 14 to 90 days. Travellers who wish to obtain long-term Vietnam visas will need to apply for a visa on arrival or a visa from their country’s Vietnam embassy.

7. Do you require a scan of my passport?

We do not require passport scans for online visa applications. However, it is often a good idea for travellers to carry a copy of their passports with them during their travels. If travellers lose their passports, a passport copy may come in handy.

8. Do I need to provide a photo for my Vietnam visa? If so, what size photo do I need?

Yes, travellers need to provide photos for their visas on arrival. Travellers must bring at least two standard passport photos. The required photo size is 4cm x 6cm. Please note that if you do not have time to prepare these photos before your departure, you can have the photo vendors take your picture at the airport in Vietnam for about US $2 per photo. Of course, travellers will also need to provide photo ID upon arrival to Vietnam.

9. What if my passport has expired?

To apply for a visa to visit Vietnam, your passport must be valid for at least six months following your intended date of arrival. Therefore, if your passport is about to expire, please renew it before applying for a visa to Vietnam in order to avoid unwanted issues at the airport.

10. Do I need to provide the exact date of my arrival on my visa application? What if I am unsure when I will arrive?

Travellers do need to provide a date of arrival. The arrival date you provide should be the earliest you plan to arrive. If your plans change and you arrive after the arrival date you provided, that is fine. However, you can not arrive before the listed arrival date. Also, the departure date you provide on your application is the last day that you can stay in Vietnam. If you wish to extend your stay, you must apply for a visa extension. For example, if you apply for a one-month visa and submit your arrival date as January 1 st , 2021, your visa approval letter will be valid from January 1 st to February 1 st , 2021. You can enter the country at any time during January, but you must leave on or before February 1 st .

11. What is the stamping fee?

The visa stamping fee is the fee that travellers need to pay at a Vietnam airport to get the official Vietnam visa stamped in their passports. The stamping fee is $25 USD for a single-entry visa between one to three months, and the stamping fee is $50 USD for a multiple-entry visa between one to three months. Note that travellers must pay the stamping fee in cash using either Vietnam dong or U.S. dollars. The immigration officials at the airport do not accept credit cards, and it may be difficult to find an ATM.

12. Can I travel without a visa approval letter and still get a visa when I arrive in Vietnam?

No, you cannot. In order to board the plane, you must show your visa approval letter to the airline representatives. We strongly recommend that you apply for your Vietnam visa before you leave for Vietnam in order to avoid a delay at the airport or a need to change your flight.

13. What if I change my flight and arrive at another airport in Vietnam?

A Vietnam visa on arrival works at any of Vietnam’s four international airports, including:

  • Tan Son Nhat (Ho Chi Minh City)

If you change your flight to any of the above airports, you should not expect any problems obtaining your visa. However, note that your date of entry in Vietnam needs to be after the arrival date and before the departure date that you listed on your visa on arrival application form.

Introduction

When planning a trip to Vietnam, one of the key factors to consider is the duration of your stay. As an international traveler, you will need a tourist visa to enter the country. Understanding the length of time that you can stay on a tourist visa is essential for proper trip planning.

Vietnam is a mesmerizing country with a rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty. From bustling cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to the serene landscapes of Halong Bay and Mekong Delta, there is so much to explore in Vietnam. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a food lover, or an adventure seeker, Vietnam has something for everyone.

In this article, we will provide an overview of tourist visas in Vietnam and delve into the duration of these visas. Whether you are planning a short visit or a longer stay, understanding the options available will help you plan your trip more effectively.

Overview of Tourist Visas in Vietnam

Before diving into the specifics of the duration of tourist visas in Vietnam, it is important to understand the different types of visas available. The two main categories of tourist visas in Vietnam are the single entry visa and the multiple entry visa.

The single entry visa allows travelers to enter Vietnam once and stay for a specific duration, typically ranging from 15 to 30 days. This type of visa is suitable for tourists who plan to visit Vietnam for a short period of time and do not intend to leave the country during their stay.

On the other hand, the multiple entry visa allows travelers to enter Vietnam multiple times within a specified period. This type of visa is ideal for tourists who plan to visit neighboring countries or take side trips during their stay in Vietnam. The duration of a multiple entry visa can vary, ranging from 30 days to one year.

It is important to note that the visa exemption policy applies to certain nationalities, allowing them to enter Vietnam without a visa for a specified period. However, this exemption usually has restrictions on the duration of stay and is applicable only to certain types of visits, such as tourism or business.

Now that we have an understanding of the different types of tourist visas in Vietnam, let’s explore the duration of these visas in more detail.

Duration of Tourist Visas in Vietnam

The duration of tourist visas in Vietnam depends on the type of visa you apply for and your travel plans. Let’s take a closer look at the duration for both single entry and multiple entry visas.

For single entry tourist visas, the duration typically ranges from 15 to 30 days. Most tourists are granted a 30-day visa upon arrival or through the e-visa system. This allows visitors to explore the country for a decent amount of time and experience its diverse offerings.

If you have plans to stay in Vietnam for longer than 30 days or need the flexibility to enter and exit the country multiple times, then a multiple entry visa is the ideal choice. The duration for multiple entry visas can vary depending on the specific visa type and your travel plans. Some multiple entry visas allow stays of up to 90 days per entry, while others can be valid for up to one year.

It is important to note that the duration of your stay is counted from the day you enter Vietnam. If you overstay your visa, you may be subject to fines or other legal consequences. Therefore, it is crucial to be aware of the expiration date on your visa and make arrangements for an extension if necessary.

Additionally, when applying for a tourist visa, it is recommended to have a clear travel itinerary and proof of onward travel, such as return tickets or a detailed plan. This helps demonstrate your intent as a genuine tourist and can facilitate a smooth visa application process.

Now that we have covered the duration of tourist visas, let’s explore the specific details of single entry and multiple entry tourist visas in Vietnam.

Single Entry Tourist Visas

A single entry tourist visa is ideal if you plan to visit Vietnam for a short period and do not intend to leave the country during your stay. The duration of a single entry tourist visa typically ranges from 15 to 30 days, depending on the specific visa type and your travel plans.

There are several ways to obtain a single entry tourist visa for Vietnam. One option is to apply for a visa at a Vietnamese embassy or consulate in your home country before your trip. This process usually involves submitting the required documents, such as a completed application form, passport, and payment of the visa fee. The visa will then be stamped on your passport, allowing you entry into Vietnam.

Another option is to apply for a visa on arrival through a reputable visa agency. This is a convenient and popular choice for many travelers. With a visa on arrival, you can apply online and receive an approval letter via email. Upon arrival at one of Vietnam’s international airports, you will present the approval letter, pay the stamping fee, and have your visa stamped on your passport.

It is important to note that the exact duration of a single entry tourist visa can vary depending on the visa type and the immigration officer’s discretion. Therefore, it is advisable to check the specific details and validity period of your visa beforehand.

Once you have obtained your single entry tourist visa, keep in mind that it allows you to stay in Vietnam for the specified duration but does not permit multiple entries or exits. If you plan to leave Vietnam and re-enter during your trip, you will need to apply for a new visa or consider a multiple entry tourist visa.

Now that we have covered single entry tourist visas, let’s explore the details of multiple entry tourist visas in Vietnam.

Multiple Entry Tourist Visas

If you plan to visit Vietnam and have the need to enter and exit the country multiple times during your stay, a multiple entry tourist visa is the best option for you. This type of visa provides greater flexibility and convenience for travelers with diverse itineraries.

The duration of a multiple entry tourist visa can vary depending on the specific visa type and your travel plans. Some multiple entry visas allow stays of up to 90 days per entry, while others can be valid for up to one year. It is important to note that the duration for each stay is usually counted from the day of entry into Vietnam.

To apply for a multiple entry tourist visa, you have a few options. One option is to apply for the visa at a Vietnamese embassy or consulate in your home country before your trip. This typically involves submitting the required documents, such as a completed application form, passport, and payment of the visa fee. Once approved, the visa will be stamped on your passport, allowing multiple entries into Vietnam within the specified period.

Another option is to apply for a multiple entry visa through a reputable visa agency or online service. This is a convenient option that allows you to apply for your visa online and receive an approval letter via email. Upon arrival at one of Vietnam’s international airports, you will present the approval letter, pay the stamping fee, and have your multiple entry visa stamped on your passport.

Keep in mind that the specific requirements and validity periods for multiple entry visas may vary. It is important to check the details and restrictions associated with your specific visa type to ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience.

With a multiple entry tourist visa, you can freely enter and exit Vietnam as many times as allowed within the visa’s validity period. This makes it convenient for travelers who plan to explore Vietnam’s neighboring countries or take side trips during their stay.

Now that we have covered multiple entry tourist visas, let’s explore the option of extending your visa if you need to stay longer than initially planned.

Extension of Tourist Visas

If you find yourself needing to stay in Vietnam for a longer period than initially planned, it is possible to extend your tourist visa. The visa extension process allows you to legally prolong your stay in the country beyond the expiration date of your current visa.

The extension process must be initiated before your current visa expires. To extend your tourist visa, you can visit the nearest Immigration Office in Vietnam or seek the assistance of a reliable visa agency. The specific requirements and procedures may vary depending on your visa type and the duration of the extension you are seeking.

It is important to note that not all visas are eligible for extension. Some visa types, such as visa exemption policies and certain e-visas, are non-extendable. Therefore, it is crucial to check the limitations and eligibility of your specific visa type before considering an extension.

When applying for a visa extension, you may be required to submit the necessary documents, such as a completed extension application form, passport, and payment of the extension fee. The fee for visa extensions can vary depending on the duration of the extension you are seeking.

It is recommended to start the extension process well in advance, as it can take several days or even weeks to process. Overstaying your visa is not advisable, as it can result in fines, travel restrictions, or other legal consequences.

While visa extensions can provide additional time in Vietnam, they are subject to approval by the Vietnamese authorities. It is important to note that visa extensions are not guaranteed and may be granted or denied based on various factors, including the discretion of the immigration officers.

Therefore, it is always best to plan your trip and visa duration accordingly to avoid any inconvenience or complications. If you foresee the need for a longer stay in Vietnam, consider applying for a multiple entry tourist visa from the beginning or consult with a visa agency for expert guidance.

Now that we have covered the extension of tourist visas, let’s summarize some important points for tourists planning a trip to Vietnam.

Points to Consider for Tourists Visiting Vietnam

When planning a trip to Vietnam, there are several important points to consider to ensure a smooth and memorable experience. Let’s explore some key factors that tourists should keep in mind:

Whether you opt for a single entry visa or a multiple entry visa, knowing the specifics of each can help you make informed decisions and ensure a seamless travel experience.

The duration of single entry tourist visas typically ranges from 15 to 30 days, whereas multiple entry tourist visas offer more flexibility, allowing for stays of up to 90 days per entry or even up to one year. It is important to note that the specific visa type, entry and exit points, and immigration regulations can determine the duration permitted in Vietnam.

Visa on Arrival in Vietnam (VOA)

This facility is applicable only to visitors traveling by air to one of the 5 international airports in the cities of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Nha Trang, and Hai Phong.

How do you get a Vietnam Visa on Arrival?

VOA is the process of obtaining a visa approval letter through travel agencies by paying a service fee. There are many websites/agencies for applying for VOA on your behalf that charge a service fee ranging from $8- $25 per visa.

  • Fill out an application online with the expected date and airport of arrival.
  • You will receive an email with the approval letter issued from the Vietnam Immigration Department within 2-5 working days. If you need it faster, you can pay additional service fees for the expedited timeline.
  • On reaching the Vietnam airport, enter the line for VOA along with the visa approval letter, 2 passport photos 4*6 cm in size, and the passport. Pay $25 cash or in Vietnamese Dong for the visa fees and get the passport stamped. You might have to wait depending on the number of tourists in the VOA line.

You can apply online through many agents like Vietnam-evisa.org  or through the hotel concierge where you’ll be staying.

At most of these online sites, you need to fill out just 1 application for all the people traveling together. You would be required to enter

  • arrival and exit date
  • port of entry
  • type of visa
  • applicants’ names as in their passport and their passport number

Processing time : You will receive the visa approval letter within 2-5 business days. If you need it early can go for expedited processing, but the service fees would increase. Some agents can even get you an approval letter within a couple of hours or on weekends if required. In fact, my dad forgot to get his visa approval letter and he had his flight on a Sunday. But the hotel concierge in Vietnam was able to arrange the letter within a few hours for which he had to pay a hefty $100. So do apply for the letter well in advance to save on the money and hassle.

Visa fees:  $25 visa fee (payable at Vietnam airport) + $8-$50 service fee (payable to the agent)

Note:  If entering by land or water, you need to contact the local embassy for a visa or apply for an e-visa if traveling for less than 30 days .

Beware:  There are many fake websites and agents who claim to be official websites that apply for visas for you. Most of them are agents and some are even fake.

  • Do check the spelling and dates on the approval letter and visa after receiving it. We had to face trouble and spend extra bucks to get things corrected.
  • Carry USD cash or Vietnamese Dong for the visa fees. No other currency is accepted.

Tips for Vietnam Visa Application

  • The passport-size photographs should have been taken within the last 1 year of applying. The photo should have no glasses, hats, or dark/decorated background.
  • The stamping fee is paid in cash in USD or Vietnamese Dong at the airport for VOA.
  • Do check the details on the visa/approval letter for dates and spellings as incorrect details can cause trouble.
  • If your itinerary includes Phu Quoc along with other parts of Vietnam, you need a valid Vietnam visa. The exemption is valid only if traveling to Phu Quoc.

It’s sad that my first thought upon reading that the UK was included was if that would change when the UK leave the EU? Can you tell I’m from the UK (though I live in Ireland ) and am wondering how it will affect my future plans!

Thanks for stopping by Emma. As per my understanding, UK moving out of EU should have no impact on their Vietnam visa process because the visa process is different for UK and other European countries. If you stay in Ireland, you are eligible for applying for a loose leaf visa through an email to [email protected] . You can read about the process in detail at https://vietnamembassy.org.uk/

Well written post. I like the way you’ve included every minor detail required in Visa process.

Great informative post, luckily I’m able to get a visa on arrival as I’m from the UK.

Thanks for appreciating. If you are from UK, you will get 15 days of visa-free travel. But if you plan to visit for a longer duration apply for evisa as its easy and cheap. Don’t get confused by the visa on arrival term, as for that also you need to apply for a Visa approval letter beforehand.

So, Americans get 1 YEAR multiple entry visa, seems rather ironic given the history. A very detailed post, and I mean VERY. I remember that I had to get the visa approval letter (which listed names of random other people on it as well) online and paid $20, and then, on arrival, I paid another $25 to get the sticker visa. It was super confusing at the airport and had no idea what was going on. I can’t remember using an agency and I think there was an official website for it in 2017.

Ha ha..now you can judge the power of American passport. 🙂 THANKS a lot for appreciating the post. Yes very few people know about the evisa process, also because it’s not very old. Infact my father also applied for VOA and was a daunting and expensive process. But evisa is seamless and no standing in airport lines to get your visa stamped. And as far as I know there is no official website for applying for VOA, although the name of the website may sound so, as you scroll to the bottom you can read the Disclaimer. 🙂

I love posts that walk me through a difficult process step-by-step! They are so helpful! This is a great guide- I hope you do the same for other countries!!

Thanks for liking. It feels great to know that we can be of help and our efforts are not futile. And to let you know we have a few other detailed visa guides(USA, Schengen, Singapore) on our website that you can refer.

What a clear concise well-written post. I always usee the e-vasa option. That has worked well for me in the past. The Vietnam visa process can be confusing.

Thanks a lot for those kind words. Feel humbled. Yes Vietnam visa process is daunting, but once you are clear about the various options then it’s simply following the procedure. Truly, evisa was so seamless and easy process. Would highly recommend it.

Vietnam is high on our places to see and I’ll keep your handy guide to getting a visa when our plans are finalized!

That’s awesome. Vietnam is a beautiful country and becoming a popular destination. SUre, do let me know in case you need any help when you plan to travel.

This is a really goof guide for those who are required to apply for Vietnam visa to visit the country. I’m just lucky I don’t have to do this. At least I will be able to go see Vietnam anytime 🙂

Yes, you sure are lucky as you are saved from the visa hassle. It’s always great when you can spend all your energy planning your vacation rather visa process. So when are you traveling then??

Thanks for this. I’ll be traveling to Vietnam from China. So good to know I can get a visa online.

Vietnam is becoming so popular travel destination. Good luck for your travel and I am glad could be of your help. Do message me in case you need any pointers.

This is honestly such great info. Vietnam is very high on my list. I managed to stay at many European places with no need of a visa (20+ Days). Pinning this for future.

Thanks you so much Diana for stopping by and appreciating. Yes it’s a beautiful country to visit. Wow!! you are lucky that you have a powerful passport. It’s always great to be able to travel without thinking about visa. Sometimes you get a good deal, but then we have to worry about visa first, so can’t make some last minute travel plans.

Vietnam was the place we had the biggest hassle getting our visa last year. I wish I had read this beforehand! Would have made the process much easier and less daunting. A great guide.

Oh that’s sad to hear. Yes I was also very worried before applying for Vietnam visa as had heard about so many fake websites. But then i got to know about evisa and to be honest it was seamless. Thanks for reading and appreciating. Hope it helps others who plan to travel.

Pretty neat post on how to obtain a Vietnamese visa. I am a big fan of e-visas and take advantage of that whenever possible. I agree on your point that you should be very careful when you put in your date of entry because that can make a lot of difference. We were flying in to Ho Chi Minh city from Siem Reap and the couple next to us had gotten their dates wrong. The airline gave them a real tough time.

Thanks a lot for the kind words. Yup, me also try and see if evisa is an option. And when I was planning on Vietnam, most people had no clue about the evisa thing. Oops, that sounds scary as your entire vacation goes haywire. Were they able to fly in then?? I know many people think that evisa is for a month, so some months have 31 days, but its clear that its 30 days.

Thanks for such a simplified guide. This doesn’t sound that complex as I am planning to visit Vietnam soon. Looking forward to read your travel tips for the country.

Thanks for reading it and appreciating it. Yes, it’s not that complex but some things are tricky about the visa. One needs to be clear of their criteria and see which option will be valid. Do drop me a mail in case you need help when you visit Vietnam.

Such a thorough guide! I’m lucky I’m Asean so we don’t really need a visa to go to Vietnam but my bf will need this on our next trip so thank you!

Thanks. Glad that it can be of help. And you are lucky that you don’t have to go through visa process. Good luck to your boyfriend. And do check if he’s eligible for visa free days. Drop me a message in case you need help.

Thanks a lot, Rajat for reading and appreciating the work. It’s always good to be able to help to provide all the details, as visa process is a bit scary. 🙂

As someone that visited Vietnam many times in the past, I have to say you did a great job of preparing your readers with everything they need to know before getting a visa for Vietnam.

Thanks Daniel. It’s exhilarating to hear such kind and inspiring words. We are glad that we can be of help to our readers and achieve our motive.

Vietnam with its beaches, rivers, Buddhist pagodas, bustling cities with French colonial landmarks, Vietnamese War history museums and the Củ Chi tunnels is such an exotic place to visit. This is a very well written and detailed post for anyone who wants to apply for Visa to this Exotic Destination!!

Yes exactly..it’s a place for all types of travelers with so much to offer. Thanks Richa. It’s always good to know that you are able to help travelers.

I’m getting ready to travel to Vietnam and this is SO helpful! THANK YOU! Love that you put the embassy information in the post. I’ll bookmark it so I have it for later!

That’s great Cate. I am happy that this could be of help to you. Yes, I have tried to put all the details that I try and look for when I am traveling. Have a fun trip to Vietnam and do message me in case you need any help.

Vietnam Multiple Entry Visa

  • Types of multi-entry visa
  • Multiple-entry E-visa
  • Multiple-entry visa at Embassy
  • Multiple-entry visa on arrival

A multiple entry visa for Vietnam allows the holder to enter and exit Vietnam for a unlimited number of times within a given period of time, usually up to 1 year. This type of visa is useful for people who need to travel to Vietnam frequently for business, tourism, or other purposes. With this type of visa, you can visit Vietnam as many times as you want during the validity period of your visa. This means you don't have to apply for a new visa every time you enter the country, which can save time and money.

Update: Multiple entry e-visa (3 month) policy has been approved and will be effective from 15 August, 2023. You are able to apply for a 3 month multiple entry visa when the new policy comes into effect in mid-August!

With the continuous development of the economy and tourism, the frequency of foreigners entering and exiting Vietnam has increased remarkably. Therefore, multiple-entry visa is the popular visa type for a large group of visitors coming to Vietnam.

A multiple entry visa allows foreigners to enter and exit Vietnam for an unlimited time in a certain period of time. It means you can exit and re-enter Vietnam as many times as you wish until the visa expires without applying for a new visa.

Multi-entry visa in brief:

There is a multiple entry visa within 1 month up to 5 years depending on each traveling purpose. However, the most popular visas are up to 1 year and are usually chosen for traveling, business, investing purposes, or so.

Multiple-entry visa can be divided into 5 main categories as the table below:

How to apply

To get a multiple entry visa to Vietnam, you can consider one of 3 following ways:

Starting from August 15th, visitors can apply for a 3-month multiple-entry e-visa, which allows a stay of up to 90 days. Please ensure that you select the 'Multiple entry' option on the official website when applying.

You can apply for a 3 month multiple entry eVisa on our website here .

The most popular way to get any type of visa is at an Embassy of Vietnam . You need to prepare all required documents for the application including a visa application form, a valid original passport, photos, and an introduction letter from a Vietnamese enterprise/agency (for business visa ). After submitting all the documents and paying the fee at the embassy office, you will get the visa and original passport back in person or by post.

In fact, the process and documents required at the embassy or consulate vary in different countries. Therefore, you should contact the embassy of Vietnam in your residing country for more information.

Applying for a visa on arrival with multiple entries is one of the most convenient ways for foreigners, especially when the Vietnamese embassy is unavailable in your residing country. However, this way is only available for those who travel to Vietnam by air and enter via one of 8 designated airports (Noi Bai, Tan Son Nhat, Cat Bi, Danang, Cam Ranh, Lien Khuong, Phu Quoc, Can Tho).

Applicants must apply for a pre-approved letter through a visa agency. This paper is legally granted by the Vietnam Immigration Department and used to board the plane and get your visa stamped at your arrival port in Vietnam. The approval visa letter requires an application form and full payment of the service fee, and it takes 2-5 working days (urgent visa approval letter within 2-4 hours available at a high fee)

At the Vietnam airport, you will present a pre-approved visa letter, a visa application form, your valid passport, and 2 passport-sized photos and pay a stamping fee at the Immigration Counter/Visa on Arrival counter to get a multiple-entry visa.

Xin Chào! If I am flying into Ho Chi Minh airport, then not leaving the airport and have a connecting flight to Bangkok, then return to Ho Chi Minh airport in 2 days and then stay in Ho Chi Minh city for the week and go home after, do I need a single visa or multiple entry visa? cảm ơn nhiều

@Michael Nguyen, if you do not exit the airport or pass through the passport/visa control counter on your first entry into Vietnam, you will only require a single entry visa for your second entry.

hello i have been granted evisa which stats that good for single/multiple entries, i m visiting hanoi and then going to combodia for 3 days and again flying back to ho chi man city so will this visa work for me ?

Can anyone help me? I am from Canada and I am planning on going to Southeast Asia for 6 months starting next fall. I am assuming from what I have read I can only stay in Vietnam for a maximum of 90 days. Is this true? If I could I would stay in Vietnam for the entire six months but I am not sure this is possible. What is my best option for a visa that would be the cheapest? Any help would be great. Thanks, Brodie.

@Brodie, yes, you can obtain a 90-day e-visa online and possibly extend it for another 90 days once you are in the country. Therefore, getting an e-visa is the fastest and cheapest way for a long-term stay in Vietnam.

I am an airline employee who will be traveling on a space available pass. I am not sure which airport I will enter, as it could change according to availability. If my Evisa states entry as Ho Chi Minh City, but I have to enter through Hanoi, is that acceptable?

Hello, the e-visa does not specify the port of entry, so you are able to fly either to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City using the same evisa paper.

what shall i entered the Intended length of stay in Viet Nam (number of days) for multiple entry

Hello, you can enter for the full length of the multi-entry visa (90 days), and you are also allowed to exit and re-enter during this period.

Hi Ma'am / Sir, I am a Philippine passport holder and currently working in malaysia..i am planning to visit Vietnam(Da Nang)..is it possible for me to apply for multi-entry (3months) visa?

Hello, sure, you can apply for a 90-day multiple entry visa to stay longer in Vietnam.

If traveling by plane from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi do I need a multiple entry visa or is single entry ok

@Taylor, A single entry is sufficient in your case, you do not need a multiple entry visa to travel in Vietnam internally.

I am travelling on a Cunard cruise, visiting 3 ports in Vietnam - 16 March 2024 Hue or Da Nang 08:00-20:00; 18 March Nha Trang 06:00-17:00 and 20 March 2024 Ho Chi Minh City 06:00-18:00. Please advise what entry visa I will need.

You will only need a single entry visa if you visit all ports in Vietnam on the same cruise without visiting other countries. You can apply for an e-visa online at the official website:

Hello, I am a US citizen flying to Vietnam at the end of the week. I am afraid my e-visa will not be approved in time. Is it possible to apply for an urgent visa through a company at the same time that my e-visa request is still being processed? Thanks in advance!

@Anna, There is no issue with this. You can apply for an urgent visa letter for visa on arrival while waiting for your e-visa to be approved. You can use either one of them to enter Vietnam.

Hello, I am an Australian passport holder. I am flying from London to Melbourne, with a 4 hour connection in Hanoi. 3 weeks later, I am flying from Melbourne to London, with a connection in Ho Chi Minh, then transiting via domestic flight to Hanoi, followed by a flight from Hanoi to London. All with Vietnam Airlines. I've already applied for a multiple entry visa. I thought I needed a visa to transit through Hanoi for the outbound, and have since discovered it's not required. Therefore, I listed my point of entry and exit on my Evisa application as Hanoi. Will this be okay for my return journey, where I fly into Ho Chi Minh first? Thanks Will

@Will, There is no issue if you arrive in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city first, the e-visa works for both airports regardless of your entry order.

Hi I am Canadian and I am currently in Vietnam on a single entry Visa. I plan to leave next week to Hong Kong for maybe a week and come back to Vietnam. Can I apply for an e-Visa while I am in Vietnam (as I am afraid it may not be granted on time if I apply in Hong Kong).

@Mikelo, That is fine, you can apply for another visa while you are in Vietnam and use it to re-enter Vietnam from Hong Kong.

Hi, I am UK citizen passport holder. How many times in one year could I visit Vietnam on a 3 month tourist e visa? Thanks.

@Steve Marshall, A 3-month visa is valid for 90 days; therefore, as long as you apply for a new visa for each visit, you can enter and exit as many times as you wish within a year.

Hi, I want to apply for a Multiple-entry evisa via Vietnam gov webpage. I will enter Saigon and then exit to Bangkok. Then re-enter at Hanoi, travel to Saigon then exit Saigon to Sydney. So my entry/exit checkpoints will be different. I am not sure what to enter in Entry checkpoint and exit checkpoint? Can you help? Will the Multiple-entry visa will I be able to enter and exit Vietnam at different airports (SGN or HAN)? Thanks

@Matthew Lee, In your case, it's advised to enter the checkpoint of your initial entry and the exit port of your final departure in the form.

we are entering Vietnam for tourism. We will enter by air at Ho Chi Minh City, then exit by boat at Chau Doc into Cambodia, then re-enter via air at Danang then leave by plane from Hanoi. Will we need 2 visa applications each or is there a way to list these destinations on the one application?

@Irene Bairstow, You can apply for a multi-entry visa and fill the form with the first entry's checkpoint as the entry point and the last departure port as the exit point.

I was granted a single entry Visa but my travel plans changed and I will be entering Vietnam twice. Will re-applying for another single entry Visa void the one I was already granted? Or should I re-apply for a multi-entry Visa?

@Osvaldo Carrillo, Yes, only one single-entry e-visa is valid at a time. Therefore, we advise you to apply for a new multiple-entry visa or a new single entry once your current single-entry visa has been used.

I have a pre approved immigration letter and plan to get my multi entry visa at HCMC airport. Arrival date in Vietnam Nov 1, 2023 Travel to Thailand Nov 11, 2023. Travel from Thailand back to Hanoi Nov 20, 2023 Depart Hanoi Nov 21, 2023. On the NA1 application form item 14 it asks for the intended length of stay in Vietnam. Should I fill in the total trip days or only the actual days while in Vietnam? Willy van Kemenade

@Willy van Kemenade, It is recommended that you fill in the total days of both trips in Vietnam using this multi-entry visa.

I am US citizen. I have a multiple entry e-visa. My entry point is DaNang. I will first enter in Da Nang and leave the country then 3 days later enter in HoChiMinh. Will I have any problems entering HoChiMinh?

@Scott C, You can re-enter Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City with a multi-entry visa issued for your initial entry in Da Nang without any issues.

Hi. I have a multiple entry visa but am now arriving one week earlier than the notes original visa entry date. Will I be able to enter the country?

@Long, You cannot enter Vietnam earlier than the date stated on the e-visa; therefore, you should either apply for a new visa or arrive on the originally planned date.

I have a TRC valid until 2024. I am planning to leave the country next week and re-enter on a new business visa with a new company. Will this be a problem if I still have an active TRC. I was planning on cancelling the TRC as soon as I get back, but there isn't enough time left to do it now.

@Rowan Mclean, It is advised that you keep your current TRC (Temporary Residence Card) and contact your new employer to renew it, as obtaining a new one on the new business visa may be complicated.

I came to Vietnam on a tourist visa on arrival last week i them went to Japan can I enter Vietnam again next week for 2 days before flying back to the uk ? So two visits in 2 weeks

@John paxton, Absolutely, you can immediately return to Vietnam upon leaving without requiring a visa.

When I apply for multiple entry visa it only allows entry and exit through one city but I’m transiting through Ho chi minh on the way (overnight) and Hanoi on the way back (overnight). Do technically I’m entering two cities and exiting two cities. Do I just choose one?

@Annie Smith, You can choose Ho Chi Minh City as your port of entry (first entry); for following entries after that, you can enter either Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, as a visa will already be stamped on your passport at that time.

Hi, I am an Australian citizen and will be flying into HCMC on 22 Sept 2023, and plan to go to Phu Quoc Island on 25 Sept 2023 and then back to HCMC. Do I need a multiple entry evisa or only single entry eVisa is required. Thank you!

@Judy Nguyen, You only need a single entry visa in this case as no additional visa is required to travel between Phu Quoc island and Ho Chi Minh City.

Hi, I'm Indonesian passport holder. I entered VN on Aug 23 2023 and exit VN on Sept 1 2023. If I wanna enter VN again on Sept 18 2023, do I need visa? If yes, can I apply multiple entry visa via Vietnam e-Visa?

@Fadlan, Once you exit Vietnam, you can immediately re-enter the country without requiring a visa.

Hi, Im from Canada and Im planing to fly to HMC city on 24/10/23 and returning to Canada on 7/11/23. I'm also planning another trip to Vietnam for next March staying for about 2 weeks then fly to Singapore for a few days then come back to Vietnam again for maybe less than a week. What time of Visa would I need.

@Kyle Chang, Tourist visas are available for a maximum duration of 3 months. Therefore, you will need to apply for two separate visas (30 day/single entry) for your trips: one for the October entry and another for March 2024.

P/S: Do not apply for 2 visas at the same time, obtain the second one only after you exit Vietnam.

Hi I’m flying to Hanoi from the U.K. arriving on 10/11/23 and returning to the U.K. on the 14/12/23 from Hanoi whilst in Vietnam I intend to visit my son in Thailand for a week then back to Vietnam what visa would I need thank you

@Andrew collings, You do not require a visa for both entries, flying to Hanoi and flying back to Vietnam from Thailand; both entries are eligible for the 45-day visa-free exemption.

Hello I’m flying to Ho Chi Minh on Nov 6, 2023. Exiting Vietnam on Nov 7th to Hong Cong for a cruise. The cruise is fro Hong Cong to Singapore with 3 seaports in Vietnam. We are returning ti Vietnam on Nov 30th via air to Phu Quoc for 5 days. Then finally back to Ho Chi Minh on Dec 5th to catch a flight home on Dec 6th. I understand that the new multiple entry Visa will be open to apply mid August. As stated above will I be able to obtain a 30 day multiple entry Visa for Vietnam?

@Rose Layton, Yes, that works fine. A 3-month multi-entry e-visa will cover all of your entries and exits out of Vietnam, as mentioned above!

Hello, I am a Belgian citizen and will be entering Vietnam the August 16th. From there on I will go to Cambodia for around 5 days and then return to Vietnam. Is it already possible to apply for a multiple entry visa online? Kind regards, Lore

@Lore Van Opstal, Unfortunately, multiple-entry visas are not available before 15th August. We advise you to apply for a single-entry visa for your first entry and obtain another one while you are in Cambodia.

Hi, I am US passport holder, and I have applied the evisa (it has been issued) with a single entry to Vietnam. I applied for 30 days from July 31 to August 30th. However, I need to leave Vietnam to Singapore and back to Vietnam for 4 days around August 12th to 16th, what can I do in this case?

@Jon, It is not possible to change your issued e-visa. We recommend that you apply for another single-entry visa while you are in Singapore to re-enter Vietnam.

Hi, we are irish passport holders, and have already applied & been issued with single entry visas for Vietnam. We stay in Vietnam for 18 days then travel to Cambodia & Laos for a 7/8 days. We then return to Hanoi, Vietnam for 1 night for our flight home. Do we need a multiple entry visa? Many thanks for your help. Kind regards

@Sara Quinn, We are afraid that you will need a multi-entry visa in this case to return to Vietnam from Cambodia. If you already hold a single-entry visa, you can apply for another one (single entry) when you are in Cambodia.

Hi ! As a french passeport holder, I will be entering Vietnam on 10 august 2023, leave the 14 for Cambodia, and come back the 16 in Vetnam. Will I have to be subject to a multi-entry visa or my visa waiver is valid for each entry ? Thank you.

@Ali Yohan, If you hold a valid French passport, you can stay in Vietnam for 15 days without a visa. Therefore, you do not need a visa for both entries mentioned above!

Hello, I am an Australian passport holder. I will be entering Vietnam on 16 August and then travel to Cambodia for 3 days before returning to Vietnam (into HCM City) on 29 August. As such, I will need a multiple entry visa. Please explain which visa is best. Thank you. Andrew

@Andrew Rubio, You can apply for a single entry 30-day e-visa for your first entry on 16 August, then when you are in Cambodia, you can apply for another visa to re-enter Vietnam.

I have applied for an E-Visa for my trip to Vietnam for 17 days from 24/07/23 to 09/08/23. I then go to Cambodia for 2 days and return to Vietnam via Ho Chi Minh City airport to get a flight back to the UK on 11/08/23. I think I will need to go through immigration to check in for the flight back to the UK. What kind of visa do I need for the re-entry to leave immigration at Ho Chi Min airport to check in for our next flight?

@D Black, if you hold a valid UK passport, you can return to Vietnam on 10/11 August without having to obtain a visa, as UK passports are exempt from the entry visa requirement for 15 days.

Hello, We are flying from Paris to Manilla on 15th August (with valid French passports). Our flight is via Hanoi (16th August : 6:25 - 17th August : 1:45) so we wish leave the airport. Then, we will fly from Manilla to Hanoi on 27th August, and stay in Vietnam until 09th September. What is the procedure to follow ? The French embassy refers me to the Vietnamese immigration service, which does not answer me. Thanks

@Aurore Wurtz, If you hold a French passport, you are exempt from a visa for Vietnam for 15 days. Therefore, you can exit the airport and stay overnight in Hanoi without having to apply for a visa.

Hello, I am flying from Siem Reap to Hanoi on 24th July. After a few days there I'm flying to Bali for a few weeks. My flight back to the UK is from Ho Chi Minh on 20th August. What type of visa do I need and where would be the best place to get it? Thanks

@Pav Sandhu, To answer your question, may we know where you are from? Do you hold a valid UK passport? Thanks.

Hi we are entering Vietnam on 2nd September then going into Cambodia on 4th and fly back into Vietnam on 11th. Should I wait and apply for a one month multi entry when available online on 25th August or will that be too late? What is the best way to apply?

@Sandy Kell, The 3-month e-visa policy will take effect on August 15th. Therefore, you can apply for your 3-month visa on August 15th for your entry on September 2nd.

Hello, I have been granted an evisa next month to enter Vietnam for holiday. I didn't realise that currently it's a one entry only. I plan to travel from Vietnam to Korea and then come back to Vietnam and then return home to Australia. I'm entering Vietnam on Aug 11th. Vietnam to South Korea Aug 17th. South Korea to Vietnam on the Aug 27th. Vietnam to Australia Sept 2nd. I know the evisa will change next month for multi entry but that's not until the 15th aug. Can I apply for a second entry now or do I wait until after aug to apply again with the new visa? Thank you

@Min, It is not possible to obtain another visa at the moment. You will need to wait until you exit Vietnam and apply for another one when you are in South Korea (17 August).

I have an E-Visa with entry date of July 12th which I will use to exit the Ho Chi Minh City Airport as I have another flight after 13 hours to Delhi. I will come back to HCMC Airport from Delhi to stay for 4 days before I fly to my final destination which is Melbourne. Can I apply for another single entry Visa now? Is it allowed to have more than one single entry e-visas? Or do I need to use the first Visa first and then apply for the new one? If I have to apply for a new one, I will be able to apply that on Wednesday (12/7) from the Airport but will I have it by Monday (17/7) ? I just want to make sure I have a VISA before I can board a flight from Delhi to HCMC.

@Harry, It is not possible to apply for two visas at the same time as only one of them is valid. You can apply for a new visa once you exit Vietnam for your return on 17 July from New Dehli. If you want to expedite the process, you can consider emergency visa processing to receive it within 24 hours.

Good Afternoon. I am due to arrive in Vietnam Noi Bai on 26 August. I will need a multi entry Visa for 30 days only as I am crossing into Cambodia for 4 days during my stay before returning to Ho Chi Min for the last 4 days. Should I wait until the new MULTI entry E-visa is available online and apply using this platform ? Many thanks Carol

@Carol McGregor, If you are traveling to Vietnam on 26 August, you can apply for a 3-month multiple entry e-visa that will cover your entire trip in Vietnam and Cambodia.

With the recent announcement that UK passport holders are now eligible to start for up to 45 days - I wondered if the multi-entry visa automatically applies to us without having to apply for one. I am leaving Vietnam, going to Cambodia, and re-entering Vietnam to fly from Ho Chi Minh City, all in 20 days.

@Maureen, Yes, if* UK passport holders are eligible for the new 45-day visa exemption, you can exit and re-enter the country for another 45 days without needing to apply for a multi-entry visa.

*Note: "IF" because the list of "certain countries" has not been confirmed yet!

With the new 45 Visa exemption rule. Can you do as many re-entries as you like? And do you always have to show a outbound ticket for every entry? Want to travel around in southeast asia with Vietnam as my basepoint.

@David Tran, Once you exit Vietnam, you can immediately re-enter with a new 45-day visa-free stay. There is no mention in the rule that you need to show proof of onward travel.

Hi, I’m an Australian who didn’t know the visa process so had to get a fast tracked one when i caught my flight on the 25th June from Sydney - Ho Chi Minh - Hanoi - Paris (I was transiting through Vietnam but had to go to the domestic terminal so therefore needed a visa). I was awarded a single entry visa that goes until the 25th July, however it is now used, and I need to transit again to Vietnam on the 15th July (Paris - Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh - Sydney). I applied for another e-visa now, in France, for a full month (just in case) and am hoping it will get approved. Will that be ok or should I have put my correct dates in, less than 30 days as I’ve already entered Vietnam for around 8 hours on the 25th June? Is there anything else I need to do or will I be ok transiting through Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh on my way home? Also second question, my partner is French so didn’t need a visa on the way in - he is flying back 21st July and transiting through Vietnam for around 24 hours - will he be ok with visa on his way back? Thanks!

@Carla van der Wallen, If you have already applied for a new visa to return to Vietnam on a transit flight next month, that is all you need for entry. You do not need to enter on the exact date stated on the e-visa; however, make sure you exit before the indicated expiry date. As for your French friend, he or she does not need a visa for this layover!

I am travelling from Hanoi, down the coast stopping at many cities before flying from Nha Trang to Siem Reap, then travelling down the Mekong to Ho Chi Minh city for a further five days, before departing back to Australia. (Tourist) The entire trip falls within the 30 days period of an e-visa. Can I apply for a multi entry visa?

@Maurice O'Sullivan, Yes, you can apply for a multiple entry visa for your entry to Vietnam. According to the new visa policy, multiple entry visa will be available from 15 August, 2023.

I am currently in Vietnam on a 14 day tourist visa, as my 30 day e visa wasn’t approved in time - I want to be here for longer than 14 days. Do I need to exit and renter? How long do I need to be gone for? Can I just go to the immigration department in HCMC instead?

@Lauren Dudley, We are afraid that you are not able to extend the current exemption by visiting the Immigration office in HCMC. Please exit and re-enter with a new 15-day visa exemption or apply for a 30-day e-visa!

I have booked tickets from New Delhi (India) to Ho chi Minh and I have connecting flight next day for onwards journey to Japan . Do I need e-visa or transit visa. And during my return journey from Japan I have planned to explore Vietnam, Can I get e-visa again and re-enter.

@Yagya saurabh, For the first entry, if you do not exit the transit area or pass through the immigration checkpoint, you do not need a visa. However, for the second entry from Japan, you can apply for a 30-day e-visa to enter Vietnam.

I will be visiting Vietnam with my spouse (a Vietnamese national) for 1 week, then spending one week in Japan before returning to stay with their family in Vietnam for another week. What would be the best route for a visa to enter exit and return?

@Alyssa, In this case, you can apply for two separate visas for two different entries. One for your first entry, and when you are in Japan, you can apply for another visa to return to Vietnam. If your travel date is not close, you can wait for the new 3-month e-visa policy, which is expected to be available in the coming weeks.

I am in Vietnam on a Family Reunification Visa 2 yr. Expiration Oct. 9, 2023 I want to invest and open a small business here and have my own Visa and business license in Da Lat or Nha Trang. Can I apply from inside Vietnam? Thank you for any information

@Lissa Reine, If your visa is valid until October, we advise that you contact the local Immigration office to extend it (if possible). Otherwise, you would need to exit Vietnam and apply for a new one!

Can I apply for multiple visas to different airports in Vietnam before I go on my trips? I am based in Hong Kong holding a Hong Kong passport. I will need to Visa to HCM airport for a work trip for June 26-30th. However, I also have a vacation booked for July 7th-14th arriving at Danang Airport. Can I apply for both visas now while I am in Hong Kong? Or do I need to complete my first (work) trip, be back in Hong Kong , before I can apply to my visa for my holiday trip? I am most concerned that I will have issues with my holiday trip. Alternatively should I apply for my July 7-14th visit first and get the approval? Then apply for HCM work trip which will take place before my holiday trip?

@Katrina San, You can apply for your business visa for your business trip in Vietnam (June 26-30th) and use the same visa for your short holiday in Da Nang and there is no problem with it.

my boss, who resides in Singapore and holds an India Passport, has an approved eVisa, is visiting Vietnam in early August for 2weeks holiday but after a few days in Vietnam he has to come back to Singapore for an urgent meeting. When he is back in Singapore, can he apply for a new eVisa to enter Vietnam again after leaving Vietnam less than a week?

@Kwan Yuen Sim, There is no wait time required to apply for another e-visa. When you exit Vietnam, you can immediately apply for a new one!

Hi i recently visited vietnam last month for 30 days, single entry visa, i would like to go back in a few months. If i apply for another single entry 30 day e-visa is this okay for me to come back?

@lachlan croft, That is fine, once you exit Vietnam, you can immediately apply for a new visa. There is no wait time required to apply for another visa to re-enter the country!

Hi I am travelling to HCMC on the 16th of June and depart on the 17th June, but I fly into Hanoi on the 2nd of July - will I need 2 separate visas? and if so can I get both on arrival? Thank you

@Darikha Senanayake, We are not sure if you hold a UK passport. If you do, then you do not need a visa for 15 days. However, if you hold a passport other than a UK passport, you will need two separate visas for those two entries

Hi is there already an update for the multiply entry visa for 3 months, which was about to come out this month? Thank you!

@Nadine, The new e-visa rule is expected to be implemented by June 23rd. Please stay tuned for our updates!

Hi, I am leaving to Vietneam on June 19th then leaving to Thailand from June 20th to the 22nd. Since I won't have enough time to reapply for the single entry visa, what do I do?

@Bryan Espinoza, There are expedited services available to speed up your e-visa application within 1 to 2 working days. Please see how it works here .

Hi, My son has a 30 days E-visa. He came to Hanoi on June 1st. He is leaving for Sydney on the 16th. He would like to visit Thailand before he leaves for Sydney. Can he re-enter Vietnam with this visa?

@Michiyo Evert, Your e-visa is valid for single entry (single use) only, therefore, if you want to return Vietnam, you will need a new visa!

Hi, I am travelling to Vietnam on the 19th of July. I will fly out from Ho Chi Minh to Cambodia on the 23rd and then return to Vietnam on the 25th. I understand that I have to apply for multiple visas to allow re-entry to Vietnam however will the Visa that I apply for once I leave for Cambodia be ready by the time I re-enter Vietnam?

@Serena Thach, The e-visa processing may take up to 3 working days, therefore it may not be available in time for your trip back to Ho Chi Minh City. A 3-month multiple-entry e-visa is expected to be available soon, so you can wait until early July to decide.

I am looking to purchase a 30 day multi-visit E-Visa for my cruises to Vietnam with my partner in August. We enter Vietnam on a cruise ship on the 2 August 2023 at Nha Trang Sea Port at 8:00am and depart on the cruise ship at 6:00pm that day. We return to Nha Trang Sea Port on 21 August 2023 on the cruise ship at 8:00am and depart on the cruise ship at 4:00pm the same day. Our final entry and exit from the cruise ship is on 22 August 2023 at Ho Chi Minh sea port at 7:00am before exiting Vietnam on the cruise ship at 7:00pm the same day. Is there a multi-entry visit visa available to do this? What do you suggest?

@Basil Hector Faulkner, You can apply for two separate visas to visit Vietnam on two different occasions mentioned above. One for entry on 02 August and another for re-entry on 21 August (Please only apply for this re-entry visa when you exit Vietnam).

There is a proposal for a 3-month multiple-entry visa that may become effective in July. You can also wait for this type of visa. If there is no news by 10 July, please follow the advice provided above.

Hi, our flight to Vietnam from the US is June 16th. Our flight back from Vietnam to the US is July 4th. Do we have to put the same date as our flight back for our exit date or can we put a later date, in case our flight gets delayed and so that the eVisa is for the full 30 days? Basically, since we already have our return flight booked for July 4th, does the eVisa exit date have to match that exact date of the flight? I'm just worried if the flight gets delayed and since that would be less than 30 days. Thanks.

@Andrew S, We advise that you input your entry date as 16 June and your exit date as 15 July. This way, you will have more time to plan ahead in case your flight gets delayed.

Hello, I will be traveling to Korea on the 16th of this month and have a Hanoi as my connecting flight is on the 17th of June late at night. Then on my way back from Korea I will be staying for 3 days in Ho Chi Minh from 23rd to 26th of June. I understand that multiple entry visas are not yet available. But will I be able to apply for a new visa if I already have one for the 16th? Or can I apply for 2 visas for different dates and different entry points together?

@Mihir Pandya, It is not possible to apply for two visas at the same time. Therefore, kindly apply for the second e-visa when you are in Korea.

I am looking to purchase a 30 day multi-visit E-Visa for my trip to Vietnam with my partner in July. We enter Vietnam on the 10th July, exit to Cambodia on the 24th July and return on the 4th August, before exiting Vietnam on the 8th August. Is a multi-entry visit visa the only way to do this? What do you suggest?

@Caitlin Mahoney, It seems you do not need a visa in this case if you hold a UK passport and both of your entries are for less than 15 days each.

Has multiple entry evisa started in vietnam, I have to come n go 2 times when I go to vietnam, as its a long flight, n i want to go out of the airport n stayin a hotel each time!

@Arshu, As of June 2023, multi-entry visa is not yet available. The best way is to apply for another single entry visa to re-enter once you exit Vietnam!

Hi, we are visiting Vietnam later this month. Our flight leaves from the US on June 16th, but we would not arrive in Vietnam till the 17th. On the eVisa application form would we put the 16th or the 17th as our arrival date? Also, we plan on leaving Vietnam on July 4th. If we put July 4th as our exit date, would the eVisa still be issued for the full 30 days or just up until July 4th? Just not sure exactly how that would work if our flight got delayed or we had to stay for a few days longer than July 4th. Thanks.

@Andrew S, We advise you to input your entry date as 16 June and your exit date as 16 July to be on the safer side in case you decide to extend your stay in Vietnam.

Hi, I am planning to come to HCMC on June 19 for a 3 month internship. Because there’s only the 1 month single entry visa, I plan to go on a 4-day trip to another country each month and get a new visa each time. I’m confused because when I read articles on “visa runs,” they say to have your e-visa ready. However, is it possible to apply for a new e-visa while I’m still in the country of Vietnam? How will the e-visa portal know whether I’ve left the country, in order to allow me to apply for a new one?

@Elyse P, There is only a 30-day single entry visa at the moment. If you want to get a longer term visa for your internship, kindly contact the school where you will be interning in Vietnam for visa instructions.

Hi! How many times in a 12 month period can I come and go from Vietnam in 12 months? Can I begin with a 3 month multi entry visa, leave VN for a day or two, then get either another 3 month multi entry visa, or a single entry visa when I come back after a couple of days? Can I stay in VN for 30 days, leave for 2 days, then come back in, month after month?

@Paul, That is fine. As soon as you exit Vietnam, you can apply for a new visa (either a 3-month or 1-month single/multiple entry visa) to re-enter Vietnam. There is no waiting time required between two visas.

Hi, I'm leaving Vietnam July 3rd for Bangkok and returning to Vietnam July 6th. I know you mentioned reapplying for another single entry at time of arrival in Bangkok since multiple entry visa is not available. Do you think we can get it approved in time? Thank you.

@Taylor Tran, The official website indicates that the processing time takes 3 full working days. We cannot tell you if your visa will be approved on time, so we recommend that you not to book flight until your visa is issued, if possible.

Hi, I am entering Vietnam on June 30th, leaving on July 11th, and then entering again on August 1st and leaving on August 4th. What type of visa should I get? According to my itinerary I would be over one month and using multiple entry. Online I cannot yet apply for three month multiple entry. What should I do? Thank you!

@Dylan Marton, At the time of writing, multiple entry visa is not available. You can apply for another single entry visa when you exit Vietnam on July 11th to re-enter on August 1st.

I will need to enter Vietnam two times within three weeks as a tourist. Can I apply for two e-visas at the same time? It looks like I can't do Multiple-entry visa on arrival since I'm not a part of an organized tour. I'm so confused.

@Tammy, Unfortunately, you cannot to apply for two e-visas at the same time. It is advised that you apply for another single entry e-visa once you exit Vietnam to re-enter the country.

Hello, when do the 30 day of the e-visa start counting? If our e-visa gets approved on June 1st but we arrive in Vietnam only on June 15th, will we have to leave Vietnam by July 1st or by July 15th?

@Seraphine Havuille, The visa will start from the date you choose on the application form. If you choose the arrival date as June 1st, it will be valid until July 1st. If you arrive on June 16th, you still need to exit before July 1st.

Hi, We are travelling to Vietnam on June 19 , and have received single entry Visa. On June 25 we going to South Korea for 6 days tour trip and return to Vietnam on June 30, and staying for 3 days then catch a flight back to Australia on July 3. Do we need to apply to a re-entry Visa? If so when and how to apply re-entry Visa?

@Tuan Le, Yes, you are required another single entry visa to return to Vietnam from South Korea. You have two options: you can either get a visa at the embassy of Vietnam in Seoul or apply for an e-visa online.

I am travelling to Kuala Lumpur from Sydney on Vietnamese Airlines in October, and there is a 16 hour stopover in Ho Chi Minh where we want to rest in a hotel. Do we need a visa? Also we will return to Vietnam a few days later for 2 weeks. Do we need another visa or a multiple visa?

@Keith Cummins, You need a visa for both entries mentioned above. You have two options: you can either apply for two single entry visas, making sure to apply for the second one only after you exit Vietnam, or you can apply for a multiple entry 3-month e-visa (which may become available in late June or July this year) to cover both trips.

Is there a waiting time required before you can apply for a second tourist evisa? Tour starts in Hanoi, then Cambodia & Laos. But I need to fly back to Hanoi to catch return round trip flight home. PS Second leg in Vietnam is only for 5 days.

@Michele Boddy, Once you exit Vietnam from your first entry, you can apply for the second visa (in Laos or Cambodia) to re-enter Vietnam for your 5-day trip.

I will be travelling to Paris from Sydney and change planes in Hanoi. So, I will be in transit only at the airport in Hanoi for about an hour. Do I need to get a visa still?

@Lisa Selmo, You do not need a visa in this case because you stay within the transit area and do not exit the airport!

I leave for Ho Chi Minh City in mid September 2023. Will be on a river cruise that ends in Cambodia and will proceed to Hanoi thereafter, so a multi-entry visa will be required. Is it likely that the Vietnam government will allow multi-entry E-visas in June/July as reported or should I do the pre-approval process with payment etc on my arrival in SGN?

@John Barbagallo, If your travel is not until mid-September, it is suggested that you wait until early August to apply for a visa as the 3-month multiple entry e-visa may be available at that time.

I received my evisa and it is only good for 15 days instead of 30. I didn't change the duration of the visa, but that is what I received. I reapplied last night ( on the official evisa portal through government?). But because I leave on Wednesday, I doubt I will get it or be sure it's correct. What do you suggest I do? Request an extension? Or should I apply for a visa to renter again after the expiration date and leave the country. Then return?

@Clarissa Pierceall, Normally, the e-visa is issued based on the entry and exit dates that you chose on the application form, with a maximum duration of 30 days. However, it seems that there might have been an error in selecting the dates, resulting in the e-visa being issued for only 15 days. For example, if you selected June 01 as the entry date and June 15 as the exit date, the e-visa would be valid for this period. If you have already reapplied, please wait for the new visa to be issued if you intend to stay for 30 days, as it is currently not possible to extend the e-visa in Vietnam.

I have a single entry, one month visa. I need to leave Vietnam twice in that time, each time for a week. Do I need to apply for a new monthly single entry visa for each re entry time. I am from Australia

@Joanne Davey, Yes, you will need a visa to return to Vietnam every time you exit the country! The visa is currently valid for single entry (one-time use) only!

Hi, we are travelling to Vietnam on July 8th and have received our single entry e-visa. On July 15th we will start a Mekong cruise to Phnom Penh and cross the Vietnamese/Cambodian border on July 17th. On July 20th we fly back to Vietnam to continue our holiday. If we understand well, we need to apply again for a single entry e-visa on July 17th? Will we have our e-visa in time for our flight on July 20th? Can we apply earlier for the second e-visa? Many thanks for your feedback!

@Chris Dens, Yes, you will need another single-entry visa to re-enter Vietnam from Cambodia on July 17th, and it is possible to obtain the visa by July 19th for your entry on July 20th. Please do not apply for the second visa if the first one has not been used yet.

I am a UK passport holder and will visit Vietnam twice for 5 days each time in September. Do I need a visa ?

@Jonathan briddon, No, you do not need a visa in this case as your stay is less than 15 days for each entry!

I am from USA. Can I board the flight with the Visa approval letter because Korean airlines is saying I need to show them a visa to Vietnam to board the flight. I’m leaving in three weeks.

@Kanwal Awan, As a US passport holder, you are eligible for the e-visa program, please see how it works below:

https://www.myvietnamvisa.com/vietnam-e-visa.html

Hi we are travelling from Australia. Arriving on 9 July in Hanoi, flying to Laos on 10 July, then returning to Hanoi and travelling Vietnam until 30 July. Can we apply for a multi-entry visa online?

@Michelle Reale, Multiple entry visa is not available at the moment, however, you can apply for another single entry when you are in Laos to re-enter Vietnam!

Hi, my family and I are from Australia and will be stopping off in Ho Chi Minh City twice but 6 weeks apart for one night only - once night on way to Europe and one night on way back. Do I need to apply for the multi-entry 3 month visa or is there a more appropriate visa? Cheers, Sean.

@Sean Duffy, If you exit the airport and stay overnight in the city, you will need to apply for a single-entry visa for each stopover. Once you exit Vietnam from the first entry, you can apply for another one to return Ho Chi Minh city from Europe!

We are looking forward to travelling to Vietnam and Cambodia in December 2023 and January 2024, coming from the UK. We are planning to spend 5 days in South Vietnam, then cross in to Cambodia, spend 6 days there, and then travel back into Vietnam for a further 14 days. As both periods spent in Vietnam are less than 15 days, am I right in presuming we do not need a tourist visa? Or do we need a visa to cover us for multiple entries?

@Pierre Le Poidevin, As long as you stay for less than 15 days for each entry, you do not a visa in this case!

I am from the Uk and visiting Vietnam in June. How long after you have entered Vietnam for 15 days on the visa exemption do you have to wait before reentering on another visa exemption?

@Callum Nicol, There is no waiting time required for a visa-free entry, which means you can exit and re-enter Vietnam immediately for another 15 days.

Hello, I'm from France. I'm arriving in Da Nang on 05 July 2023, then I will be going to South Korea for a few days and then I will go back to Vietnam, which visa should I apply? My mom is a Vietnamese citizen. Thank you!

@Elodie Nguyen, French passport holders do not need a visa for Vietnam for stays up to 15 days. Therefore, you can enter and exit Vietnam as many times as you wish, as long as each stay does not exceed 15 days.

We are arriving in Hanoi on 02 July 2023, then will be flying out to Siem Reap on 22 July, and coming back into Vietnam via a Mekong River Cruise on 28 July, before flying back to Sydney on 03 August. If the multi-entry e-visa is not available in time for the start of our trip, will we then need to apply for a second e-visa once we've headed to Cambodia, and is this available for river border crossing?

@Tanya Symington, Yes, an e-visa is applicable for entry into Vietnam via a river cruise. Therefore, you can apply for a single-entry visa when you are in Cambodia (for your Mekong river cruise). However, since you are not traveling until mid-July, we advise that you wait until late June to decide because a multi-entry visa may become available again at that time.

Hello, I am visiting Vietnam in June for 15 days then I am going to Cambodia for 7 days then back to Vietnam for a day for a flight. What visas for Vietnam would I require?

@Lindsey Williamson, If you hold UK passport, you are exempt from visa for Vietnam for 15 days. Therefore, you do not visa for both entries.

Hello, We are coming from Finland to Vietnam for 7 days, and we were planning to visit Laos by Lao Bao land border one day. Can we return with the 15 days exemption permit or do we need visa? Thank you?

@Arttu Helomaa, Yes, under new visa rule, you can re-enter immediately upon leaving. Therefore you can do a visa run to Lao Bao border and return with another 15 day visa-free entry.

We are holidaying in Vietnam and Cambodia in June and July 2023. How do I apply for a multi entry Vietnam visa?

@Yas Ellis, Multi-entry visa is not available at the moment, you can apply for another single entry visa when you exit Vietnam for Cambodia.

How many times can I visit Vietnam on my 15 days exemption in one year?

@Michael Redmond, You can visit Vietnam (15 day visa free) as many times you wish if you:

  • Stay in Vietnam for less than 15 days for each entry
  • Hold a valid passport for at least 6 months beyond exit date

If my visa is valid from 2023-Feb-8 til 2023-May-8, could I leave Vietnam on 2023-May-8 without getting any penalty?

@Ben Lee, If you expiry date is 08 May, 2023 then you can exit on that day without having any problems.

i have a canadian passport and applied for a single entry vietnam evisa valid for 30 days from april 26 to may 25. on may 13-17 i will be going to thailand which i do not think i need a visa for. however i will be returning back to vietnam from may 18-24. do i need to apply for another vietnam evisa since mine is only single entry and i have already entered and will be leaving for the 5 days? or does it count within the 30 days

@Jessica H, The e-visa is valid for single entry only, which means once you exit Vietnam, it will be invalid, even if you do not stay up to 30 days with it. Therefore, you are required to apply for another visa while being in Thailand to return Vietnam.

Hi I fly in to saigon on 1st june from UK and fly out of saigon back to uk on 21st june I'm looking to travel in to Cambodia after 10 days in Vietnam then come back to Vietnam after 5 days would my 15 days Visa allowance start again or do I need a multi visa to cross border in to Cambodia then back in Vietnam?

@Thomas Rowley, If both of your stays in Vietnam are less than 15 days, you do not need a visa for each entry. The explanation is as follows:

  • You land on June 01 and stay in Vietnam for no more than 15 days before going to Cambodia (no visa required).
  • You then return from Cambodia to Vietnam and again stay for no more than 15 days (no visa required).

I am traveling from the UK to Vietnam. According to the UK government website I do not need a Visa if I am traveling to Vietnam for 15 days. I fly to Cambodia from Vietnam on day 15 but then return to Vietnam 2 days later. Does this start the 15 day period again as I left and then returned?

@Mike, According to the new rule, you are able to return immediately (or after 2 days) and the 15-day exemption will count from the date you return.

As a British & French citizen can I apply online for a 3 month multiple entry visa, starting from June until Aug23, if I come without an organised tour?

@Heather, An e-visa does not require you to book a tour, but it is currently available only for a single entry of one month. However, with the new proposal, we believe that a three-month e-visa will be available soon, possibly in June or July.

I want to travel to Vietnam for about 2 months this summer, however, there is currently no tourist visa that allows for more than 30 day stay. Can I stay in VN for 30 days, travel to Thailand for a week and reapply for a new tourist visa, then come back and stay for another 30 days?

@Dylan, Yes, that defenitely works. You can apply for a single entry visa to stay for 30 days then get another one while you are in Thailand before returning.

If I am in Vietnam for 30 days on a single entry visa, can I then leave to go to Cambodia for 5 days and then re-enter Vietnam for four days before flying back to the UK. ie can I use the 15 day visa exemption for my final four days in Vietnam (after having made use of a 30 day single entry visa not long before).

@Sarah Ransome, Yes sure, you can return Vietnam visa-free for 15 days after your trip to Cambodia, there is no issue with that.

Hello, I was told that I could exit and re enter o a 15 day visa exemption when I was in Ho Chi Minh city. I stayed in Ho Chi Minh city for 2 days, have left for Cambodia for 5 days and am now looking to return for 15 days. Is this possible?

@Mark Warrenne, Yes, you can exit and re-enter immediately from Cambodia for another 15 day free-visa stay ( source )

I planning to come Saigon on 19 June by single entry Visa, and go to South Korea on 26 June then back to Saigon on 30June for few more day before return to Australia. Should I change my Visa to multiple entry Visa or better apply for extra single entry Visa? Where and when I should apply for re-entry Visa? Thanks.

@Tuan Le, Currently, the E-visa is valid for a single entry only, meaning that you will need another visa to re-enter Vietnam. However, there is a proposal for a 3-month multiple entry E-visa that is expected to be implemented soon. If you do not plan to travel until June, it may be worthwhile to wait for the updated visa policy before making a decision.

On what date in May can a multiple entry visa be obtained online, May the 1st or another date. (I am flying to Saigon from Australia on May 12th. A week later I fly to The Phillipines, then a week later to Hanoi, then to Cambodia and finally to Saigon and then home. So I’ll be entering Vietnam three times within a one month period.)

@Christopher Adams, We cannot say for sure when it will be available, most likely it will be introduced in late May or June. You can check out the latest news on visa policy below:

  • News & updates: https://www.myvietnamvisa.com/vietnam-visa-policy-updates-news.html

I am looking to purchase a 30 day multi-visit E-Visa for my trip to Vietnam with my partner in July. We enter Vietnam on the 10th July, exit to Cambodia on the 24th July and return on the 4th August, before exiting Vietnam on the 8th August. Please can you send across all relevant information and a link for completing, submitting and paying for our 30 day multi-visit e-visa.

@Caitlin Mahoney, The e-visa is only valid for a single-entry visit. To travel back to Vietnam from Cambodia on 24 July, you will need to apply for another single-entry visa.

Does visa valid for multiple entries during 30 days? I am to travel from Vietnam to Cambodia by plane and back to Vietnam by bus in 4 days.

  • How long can I stay in Vietnam on a tourist visa?

How long can I stay in Vietnam on a tourist visa?

With Vietnam tourist visa (Vietnam C1 Visa), you can stay here up to 30 days (inclusive of dates of entry and exit), single entry. Of course, you can extend for 1 month visa or 3 months more if you want to stay longer. Vietnam visa extension (C1 visa extension) can be done easily when you are in Vietnam. And please note that the extension fee of Vietnam Visa is subjected to be higher than a new visa getting when you are outside the country.

Start planning your Vietnam tours today! With so much to see and do in this beautiful country, it's important to have a detailed plan in place. Our team of experts can help you create the perfect itinerary for your interests and budget.

If you do need to stay in Vietnam more than 3 months up to 1 year , you are recommended to apply for Vietnam Business Visa (B3 Vietnam Visa) in advance. You can obtain this kind of visa with Vietnam Tour or through the nearest Vietnamese Embassy in your country.

If you are planning to visit Vietnam soon, you might want to know about some new changes in the visa policy that will take effect from August 15, 2023. According to Resolution 127 of the government, Vietnam will offer electronic visas for citizens of all countries and territories who enter through any of the 42 international border gates. The electronic visas will be valid for up to 90 days and can be used for single or multiple entries. Moreover, Vietnam will extend the visa exemption period for 13 countries from 15 days to 45 days. These countries are: UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Belarus, Japan and South Korea. These changes are expected to boost tourism and trade between Vietnam and other countries.

In order to get Vietnam Visa, applicants will be required to pay Visa service fee and Stamping fee. For those people choosing to get Vietnam Embassy Visa, both of these fees will be collected by staff working there. In this case, visa fee is not fixed because each Embassy of Vietnam requires a different fee.

The most popular type of visa for Vietnam is a tourist visa, which is normally valid for 15-90 days. You can apply for a 3-month tourist visa, but the procedure will be the same as for a 1-month visa. In other words, the validity of a Vietnamese tourist visa can range from 15 days to 3 months. If you need to stay in Vietnam for longer than 30 days, you will need to apply for a long-term visa. There are several types of long-term visas available, including business visas, student visas, and work visas. The requirements for these visas vary depending on the type of visa you are applying for. You can apply for a tourist visa at a Vietnamese embassy or consulate in your home country, or you can apply for an e-visa online. The e-visa is a convenient option, but it is only available for citizens of certain countries. To apply for a tourist visa, you will need to provide the following documents: A passport that is valid for at least six months A completed visa application form A recent passport-sized photo A visa fee If you are applying for a long-term visa, you will need to provide additional documents, such as a letter of invitation from a Vietnamese sponsor, a proof of financial support, and a medical certificate. The processing time for a tourist visa varies, but it is typically 3-5 working days. The processing time for a long-term visa can be longer, up to 15 working days.

About visa on arrival, to get this visa issued, each subtype of fee is required to pay for two separate steps. In more details, visa service fee is charged to process preapproved visa letter and stamping fee is paid to grant an official visa stamped onto passenger’s passport. Unlike embassy visa, the cost of Vietnam visa online is quoted clearly for each visa type at Vietnam visa fee page.

In order to request visa, foreign travelers can visit Vietnam Embassy and apply in person or apply online for visa upon arrival, or e-visa. Among these ways, getting Vietnam visa upon arrival and obtaining an e-visa are more recommended than the other option because of their simplicity of procedure.

Vietnam Visa Extension – All Travelers Should Know

Are you here in Vietnam but you want to stay in the country longer while the Vietnam visa is about to expire? Do you need to get a new Vietnam visa or are there some ways to legitimately lengthen the stay? Let’s find out about the Vietnam visa extension in the post below.

1. What is Vietnam visa extension?

You must have heard of Vietnam visa extension and visa renewal, so what is the difference between those two?

Actually visa extension is the action of prolonging your stay in Vietnam with a new stamp in the passport clarifying a new duration while renewal will be like you are applying for a new Vietnam visa stamp. In addition, foreigners can extend their Vietnam visa without leaving the country while visa renewal requires expats to leave Vietnam and then enter with a new visa.

2. Policy of Vietnam visa extension during Covid19

Due to the outbreak of Covid19, the Vietnam Immigration Department has released the policy of automatic Vietnam visa extension. Therefore:

  • Those who come to Vietnam after March 1, 2020 and are stuck in the country by the pandemic will be automatically extended their visa until November 30, 2020. It means you will not be subjected to fine, or penalty if you exit Vietnam by November 30, 2020 due to being stranded here.
  • Those who come to Vietnam before March 1, 2020 can be also applicable for the policy, but they are required to show documents proving they couldn’t depart from the country because of the Covid 19.

3. How to extend visa in Vietnam

Before applying for Vietnam visa extension, please be reminded that your passport is at least 6 months in validity and 2 blank pages for immigration procedures.

Vietnam visa extension will be different from each case, so for the exact required documents and process, please contact directly with the office of Immigration Department you are going to submit at:

  • Hanoi Immigration office: 44-46 Tran Phu, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi
  • Danang Immigration office: 78 Le Loi, Thach Thang, Hai Chau, Da Nang
  • Ho Chi Minh City Immigration office: 196 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Ward 6, District 3, Ho Chi Minh city

Working hours:

  • Monday-Friday (Morning: 7am – 11h30am; Afternoon: 1h30pm – 5pm); and
  • Saturday (Morning time only)

4. Vietnam visa extension types

The new duration of stay will depend on your current Vietnam visa, and it is currently 1 month, 3 months and 6 months types as follows:

Extend visa for 1 month if:

  • Foreigners coming to Vietnam with Vietnam visa exemption;
  • Foreigners coming to Vietnam with 1 month Vietnam tourist visa;
  • Foreigners coming to Vietnam with 3 months Vietnam tourist visa;
  • Foreigners coming to Vietnam with Vietnam e-visa;
  • US citizens coming to Vietnam with 1-year Vietnam tourist visa;

Extend visa for up to 3 months if:

  • Foreigners coming to Vietnam with 1 month Vietnam business visa;
  • Foreigners coming to Vietnam with 3 months Vietnam business visa;
  • US citizens coming to Vietnam with 1-year Vietnam business visa;
  • Foreigners coming to Vietnam holding APEC Business Travel Card;

Extend visa up to 6 months if:

  • Foreigners coming to Vietnam with 5-year Vietnam visa exemption certificate;

Here are all the things that you should know to extend your visa in Vietnam. In case you have difficulty, just contact the Immigration Department or a visa agent for assistance. In case your number of extension times has reached to its limit, you may consider a visa run . However, this way of extending your stay in Vietnam is not available in this COVID.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Entry Requirements:  You must have a valid passport and a visa (or pre-approval for a visa on arrival) to enter Vietnam. Your passport must be valid for six months beyond your planned stay, and you must have at least one blank visa page (not including the endorsement page). Visit  Mission Vietnam’s website  for the most current information. If you arrive in Vietnam without an appropriate visa (which could be an e-visa) or pre-approval for a visa on arrival, you will be denied entry . The U.S. Mission to Vietnam cannot assist U.S. citizens who arrive in Vietnam without required visas. U.S.-Vietnam dual nationals should consult the Department of State’s information page for Travelers with Dual Nationality and the Embassy of Vietnam for travel requirements. You must enter and exit Vietnam on the same passport. If using a Vietnamese passport to enter and exit the country, your passport must have at least six months’ validity from your return date to the United States.

Visas:   The Government of Vietnam requires a “visa sponsor” for all visa categories, except for E-visa. A visa sponsor is a local business or travel agent to apply for a pre-approval letter with a Vietnamese Immigration Office in Vietnam on behalf of the traveler. Only on receipt of the pre-approval letter can a foreigner apply for an appropriate visa at a Vietnamese Embassy or Consulate abroad, or for a visa on arrival. For more information about this process, please visit the website of the Vietnamese Embassy here . When you apply for a visa to enter Vietnam, be sure to request the visa category that corresponds to your purpose of travel. Please refer to  Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs website  for information detailing visa categories. If you plan to work in Vietnam, you must obtain a work permit  before  applying for your visa. If you change the purpose of your visit after you have received your visa, you must obtain a new visa outside of Vietnam appropriate for your new activities before beginning those activities. Under local immigration law, employment-based visas are based on a petition from a specific employer, and workers may be unable to switch jobs without securing a new visa. In addition, employers may prevent the departure of contracted employees from Vietnam if they violate contract terms. Before accepting employment in Vietnam, make sure you understand the conditions of contracts and employment-based visas.

Note that travelers with a U.S. APEC Business Travel Card will still need a valid visa to enter Vietnam.  The United States is a transitional member of APEC and does not reciprocate with other economies regarding full pre-clearance benefits to applicants.  As such, no countries are listed on the back of U.S. APEC Business Travel Cards and card holders are required to present any travel or identity documentation, such as a passport and visa (where applicable), required by Vietnam. If a  U.S. APEC Business Travel Card  holder does not conform to Vietnam’s entry requirements, the card holder may be refused entry.

Please consult  Mission Vietnam’s website  for more information.

Please note that Vietnam requires a valid visa, residence card, or approval from the Immigration Department to leave the country. Immigration officials will apply a fee to replace lost/stolen visas or will assess a fine for any visa overstays. The Government of Vietnam has recently increased the penalties for visa overstays, and fines can be substantial. In addition, the processing of exit visas for cases involving visa overstays can take one to two weeks, and longer for more complex cases.

If your U.S. passport is lost or stolen in Vietnam, you will need both a replacement passport and a replacement Vietnamese visa to legally remain in or depart Vietnam. The U.S. Embassy in Hanoi and the Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City can usually issue you a limited validity replacement passport in as little as one business day for emergency purposes; however, the Vietnamese government requires three to five working days to issue a replacement visa. For lost and stolen passports, immigration officials will also request a police report. You must file a report of a lost or stolen passport with the police in the location where the loss or theft of your passport occurred, or authorities may refuse to accept the report. The U.S. Embassy and the Consulate General cannot expedite the replacement of your Vietnamese visa.

If you plan to travel from Vietnam to Laos by land, you should request that an adhesive visa be affixed to your passport instead of a detachable one. Lao immigration officials require proof that travelers have departed Vietnam, something that can only be shown with an adhesive visa. Vietnamese officials remove detachable visas from passports when travelers depart Vietnam, leaving travelers with no proof of their Vietnam departure. This situation can result in Lao officials requiring travelers to return to Vietnam.

Pre-approval for Visa on Arrival:   The Government of Vietnam has authorized some businesses and travel agencies to arrange for pre-approval for a “visa on arrival” at the airport. On a receipt of a pre-approval letter, travelers may then travel to Vietnam and apply for a visa upon landing to Vietnam. Please be advised that you should not travel to Vietnam without having been issued a pre-approval letter as it may result in a denial of entry by immigration authorities. To avoid having to rearrange your travel date, please do not make travel arrangement before you receive your pre-approval letter.

E-visa:  U.S. citizens can apply online for an E-visa on the  Vietnam Immigration website . The E-visa is valid for a maximum of 90 days, single or multiple entry, and does not allow for renewal or extension from within the country.   The E-visa is valid for a maximum of 90 days, single or multiple entry, and does not allow for renewal or extension from within the country. An E-visa is usually processed within three to five working days after the Vietnam Immigration Department receives the completed application and E-visa fee. E-visa holders must present the printed E-visa and valid passport at the port of entry. Prior to your travel with an E-visa to Vietnam, we recommend travelers to carefully check their E-visa to make sure all information is correct, and that you will enter/exit Vietnam through a port of entry that you had selected at the time of application. An error on E-visa, including minor differences between the information on the application and the biographical information on the passport, may result in a denial of entry by immigration authorities. The U.S. Embassy and Consulate General are unable to change the information on your E-visa or help expedite the process as Vietnamese E-visa is under the sole jurisdiction of the Vietnamese government.

Certificate of Visa Exemption:  Vietnamese nationals residing abroad indefinitely, their spouses, and their children may apply for a Certificate of Visa Exemption. The certificate has a maximum validity of five years, during which time the holder can enter Vietnam and stay for up to six months without applying for a visa. More information can be found on the  Vietnam Embassy website .

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Vietnam.

Immunization information for travelers can be found on the  Centers for Disease and Control’s website .

Safety and Security

The Department of State recommends that U.S. citizens overseas always maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness while traveling internationally. Please visit  www.travel.state.gov  for up-to-date information.

Messages regarding weather-related events are posted  here  and on the Embassy/Consulate General  website .

While in Vietnam you are subject to Vietnamese laws. U.S. citizenship will not help you avoid arrest or prosecution. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be arrested, expelled, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Vietnamese authorities routinely do not provide timely notification of the arrest of a U.S. citizen to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate General or approval for consular officials to visit U.S. citizens. The delays for both – particularly for access – can take several weeks. Note that if you enter Vietnam with a non-U.S. passport, the Government of Vietnam has different notification and access responsibilities for the U.S. Embassy or Consulate General. See our  webpage  for further information.

Small-scale, peaceful protests occasionally occur in Vietnam’s major cities, but large-scale demonstrations are rare. As in any country, you should avoid large protests, as they can become violent with little or no warning.

The Government of Vietnam may not allow or authorize travel to certain areas of the country that are deemed sensitive. Check with local authorities before visiting border areas to see if you need to obtain a travel permit issued by local authorities. U.S. citizens have been detained after traveling in areas close to the Vietnamese borders with the People’s Republic of China, Cambodia, and Laos. These areas are not always marked, and there are no warnings about prohibited travel.

Safety standards in Vietnam are not at the same level as those in the United States and vary greatly from company to company and province to province. This is especially true for fire safety codes. Travelers should be aware that many buildings, including hotels, shops, and restaurants, have limited or no fire safety equipment or emergency exits. Ground and water transportation also lack safety regulations.

Travelers to Vietnam should have no expectation of privacy and should safeguard all personal documents and electronic devices. Exercise caution when discussing sensitive or proprietary information.

Crime:  Crime in Vietnam is rated high. Exercise vigilance and the same commonsense security precautions you would in any major metropolitan city in the United States.

Violent crime against foreigners is rare; however, petty crimes, such as theft, bag grabs, and pickpocketing occur regularly, especially in crowded areas and tourist locations. Typically, there is a rise in petty crime during the Christmas and Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday seasons, including during the day and in well-lit areas. Motorcyclists are known to snatch bags, cameras, cell phones, and other valuables from individuals riding or walking on the street.   If you are targeted by thieves, do not resist, and report the incident immediately to local police and to the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi or the U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City. Keep a tight hold on bags as you enter and exit vehicles and as you walk around. Hold tightly to cell phones when using them outside and lock and stow phones until you actually need to use them.

Some U.S. citizens have reported threats of death or physical injury connected to business-related disputes. You should report such threats to local authorities and if you feel unsafe, you should depart the country.

Keep your passport and other important valuables in your hotel in a safe or another secured location at all times and carry both photo and digital copies of your passport. You should immediately report the loss or theft of your U.S. passport to the local police and the U.S. Embassy or the U.S. Consulate General. See section on “Visas” for information on what to do if your passport/visa are lost or stolen.

Sexual Assault:  Women travelling alone may be subject to some forms of harassment and verbal abuse. Sexual assault, harassment and rape do occur. To minimize the risk avoid travelling alone, especially at night; remain particularly vigilant in less populous areas; and be careful when dealing with strangers or recent acquaintances. Local authorities may not always respond adequately to reports of sexual violence and harassment. If you are the victim of a sexual assault, you should report it immediately to local authorities and to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate General. Never leave food or drinks unattended or in the care of strangers. Be wary of accepting snacks, beverages, gum, or cigarettes from new acquaintances. These items may contain drugs that could put you at risk of sexual assault and robbery.

Male violence against women and sexual harassment is often ignored by the police. In areas foreigners frequent, women have reported harassment and assault such as men exposing themselves, asking for sexual favors, and groping.

Drugs:  Recreational drugs available in Vietnam can be extremely dangerous and can result in death. Drugs sold in Vietnam may be fake, synthetic, or laced with toxic ingredients undetectable to the buyer. This includes nitrous oxide balloons widely available in nightlife establishments. You should also avoid purchasing liquor or cigarettes from street vendors or strangers, as the authenticity of the contents cannot be assured.

Victims of Crime:   U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate General for assistance. Vietnam’s local equivalent of an emergency line is 113. Local police will issue a report of a crime, but generally will only initiate investigations for crimes they determine serious, which do not always equate with U.S. standards. Investigations can take several months or even years to complete.

In the event you are a victim of a crime, local police will issue a crime report in Vietnamese, but generally will only initiate investigations for crimes they determine serious. While the overall situation is improving, some police have asked for bribes, ostensibly to support local police efforts or to facilitate investigation of a crime. If you are involved in a situation where a police officer is soliciting money, contact American Citizen Services at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate General.

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

We can:

  • Help you find appropriate medical care.
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police.
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent.
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion.
  • Provide a list of local attorneys.
  • Provide information on victim’s compensation programs in the United States.
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited support in cases of destitution.
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home.
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport.

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy or Consulate General for assistance .  Note that local authorities take a different attitude towards domestic violence cases and are hesitant to get involved in cases involving foreigners. Vietnam has very limited infrastructure to support victims of domestic violence.

Tourism:   The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more  information on insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:   You are subject to Vietnamese laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned.  Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business. Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Vietnam are severe, and convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines, or even the death penalty. Police periodically raid nightlife establishments suspected of engaging in the drug trade and during these raids will subject all patrons present to drug testing at the police station. A positive result, regardless of whether drugs were consumed in Vietnam or before entry, may result in criminal charges.

In Vietnam, you may be taken in for questioning if you do not have proper ID, such as a passport or a copy of your visa. Driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in a fatal accident could lead to immediate imprisonment. If you break local laws in Vietnam, your U.S. passport  will not  help you avoid arrest or prosecution. Note that the Vietnamese legal system allows for lengthy criminal investigation periods that can lead to prolonged pre-trial detention; some investigations can last years without any explanation.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. You can be  prosecuted in the United States  for engaging in sexual conduct with children or for using or disseminating child pornography in a foreign country regardless of the legality of these activities under the host country’s laws.

Arrest Notification in Vietnam:    If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy or Consulate General immediately. There are often delays in notification by the Vietnamese authorities to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate General and officials have been known to delay consular access to prisoners for several weeks.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or forfeit them upon return to the United States. See the  U.S. Department of Justice website  for more information.

Gambling:  Gambling is highly regulated by the government and persons or businesses running games or gambling halls are required to be licensed. The Government of Vietnam pursues cases of running or playing in unlicensed games aggressively. There are currently U.S. citizens serving jail sentences of three to five years because of illegal gambling.

Dual Nationality:  Dual nationality is accepted by the Vietnamese government in some, but not all, circumstances. However, dual nationals should be aware that Vietnam recognizes their Vietnamese citizenship as primary before others. In such cases, the U.S. Embassy and Consulate General may be limited in the consular services we are able to provide. U.S. citizens who also hold Vietnamese citizenship and are currently residing in Vietnam may wish to contact local authorities and/or seek competent legal advice on how local laws may affect their status. For detailed information on Vietnamese nationality law and other legal issues visit the  Embassy of Vietnam website .

Work Authorization:  The Government of Vietnam maintains strict laws with respect to foreign workers. U.S. citizens planning to work in Vietnam should make sure that they are in full compliance with Vietnamese regulations. Penalties can be severe and include deportation, fines, or detention. Vietnam immigration law allows for companies sponsoring foreign employees to exercise control over their employees’ visas, including prohibiting their exit from the country if they have any outstanding debts.

Teaching English:  We advise those considering accepting an English teaching job in Vietnam to carefully review the terms of the contract regarding working and living conditions and to ask for multiple references from persons familiar with the institution, especially former U.S. citizen employees, before committing to contracts. Some U.S. citizens have reported their employers have reneged on contract terms, including offering significantly lower salaries than agreed or seizing their passports, and employers have caused complications with the exit visa process for employees who quit, complicating the exit visas required to depart the country.

Hotels:  Hotels in Vietnam require you to present your passport (and visas, if issued separately) upon check-in so that your stay can be registered with local police. Every guest in a hotel room or private residence must be registered, regardless of nationality. If you stay at a private residence (i.e., at the residence of family or friends), you must comply with registration requirements by visiting the local police station and registering your stay within 24 hours. Some provinces allow registration online.

Exports:  Vietnamese law prohibits the export of antiques. However, these laws are vague and unevenly enforced. Customs authorities may inspect and seize your antiques without compensating you, and the determination of what is an “antique” can be arbitrary. If you purchase non-antique items of value, you should retain receipts and confirmation from shop owners and/or the Ministry of Culture and the Customs Department to prevent seizure when you leave the country.

Imports:  Vietnamese authorities have seized documents, audio and video tapes, compact discs, literature, and personal letters they deem to be pornographic or political in nature or intended for religious or political proselytizing. It is illegal to import weapons, ammunition, explosives, military equipment and tools (including uniforms), narcotics, drugs, toxic chemicals, pornographic and subversive materials, firecrackers, or children's toys that have "negative effects on personality development, social order, and security."    For up-to-date information on Vietnam Customs information, please visit the  Vietnam Customs website .

Freedom of Expression:   The Government of Vietnam maintains strict control over all forms of political speech, particularly dissent or speech it deems as critical of the government and/or party. U.S. citizens have been detained, tried, and convicted for political activities (including criticizing the government or its domestic/foreign policies or advocating alternatives to Communist Party rule), possession of political material, and non-sanctioned religious activities (including proselytizing). Authorities have also detained U.S. citizens for posting messages on blogs or online chatrooms that are perceived to be political or critical of the government. U.S. citizens of Vietnamese descent should be especially careful with their online postings. Review the latest version of the  Vietnam Human Rights Report  for the latest information on Freedom of Expression in Vietnam.

Association with Groups:   Persons whom the Government of Vietnam perceives to be associated with dissident or political groups may be denied entry to Vietnam, prevented from departing, detained, interrogated, placed under surveillance, or even tried and convicted. Note that if arrested, you could be subject to lengthy detention without access to an attorney or family members. U.S. citizens of Vietnamese descent should be especially careful about associating with dissident groups. U.S. citizen travelers have been summoned by immigration or local security officials for reasons that are unclear or not explicitly related to any suspected or alleged violation of law. We recommend that U.S. citizens finding themselves in this situation contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate General immediately for further information and/or assistance.

Photography: Taking photographs of anything that could be perceived as being of military Taking photographs of anything that could be perceived as being of military or security interest may result in questioning by authorities, fines, or delayed travel. You should be cautious when traveling near military bases and avoid photography in these areas.     Disputes: The Vietnamese government has occasionally seized the passports and blocked the departure of foreigners involved in commercial disputes. U.S. citizens whose passports have been seized by Vietnamese authorities should contact the Embassy or Consulate General for assistance .

Civil Procedures:  Civil procedures in Vietnam, such as marriage, divorce, documenting the birth of a child, and issuance of death certificates, are highly bureaucratic and can be slow. Local authorities may refuse a request to include a non-Vietnamese name on a birth certificate. In addition, for those wishing to get married in Vietnam, you will need a notarized affidavit of single status. Please contact the  Vietnamese Embassy in Washington, D.C. , or the  Vietnamese Consulate General in San Francisco  or  Houston  concerning documentary requirements for these services. Enforcement of civil orders is frequently difficult or non-existent.

Women Travelers:   See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

LGBTQI+ Rights:  There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or in attending LGBTIQ+ events in Vietnam. See   our  LGBTQI+ Travel Information  page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report   for further details.

Accessibility: Most public places and public transportation are  not  accessible to persons with disabilities. Sidewalks, curb ramps, restrooms, road crossings, and tourist areas are not equipped to assist such individuals. New, modern buildings and facilities in larger urban cities are regularly built with ramps and accessible entryways.

Students: See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Medical facilities in Vietnam, including emergency response services, frequently do not meet international standards and may lack medicine and supplies. We strongly recommend travelers purchase medical evacuation insurance before visiting Vietnam.

  • Medical personnel generally speak little or no English. Doctors and hospitals expect immediate cash payment for health services. You may obtain lists of local English-speaking physicians from the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi or the U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City from our  website .
  • International health clinics in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City can treat minor illnesses and injuries, but more serious problems often require medical evacuation to other cities in the region.
  • Although you can purchase many prescription and non-prescription medications at pharmacies, some common U.S. medications may not be available. You should bring adequate supplies of medications for the duration of your stay in Vietnam and ensure with the Ministry of Health that the medicine you need is allowed to enter Vietnam. You should carry a copy of your prescription if carrying medicine in a travel case or container.
  • We strongly recommend travelers purchase medical evacuation insurance before visiting Vietnam.
  • Travelers to Vietnam are at risk of the following diseases: Tuberculosis, Dengue Fever, Zika, Avian Influenza (H5N1), and HIV. You can find detailed information on vaccinations and other health precautions on the  CDC website .

We do not pay medical bills. The U.S. government cannot pay medical bills and does not provide medical assistance. Also, be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept upfront payments. See our webpage for more  information on insurance providers for overseas coverage . Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas. If covered by TriCare, check the TriCare website ( https://www.tricare.mil/ ) for additional information about overseas coverage.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation as it can cost many thousands of dollars. Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription.

It is extremely important  that travelers have sufficient funds and/or insurance to cover any potential medical costs.  Frequently hospitals will hold onto a patient’s passport as collateral for payment, and patients may have difficulty getting their passport back without paying their medical bills in full.  Patients who do not pay their medical bills in full also run the risk of being barred from departing the country.

Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Air quality: Air pollution is a significant problem in Vietnam’s major cities, and you should consult your doctor prior to travel and consider the impact that seasonal smog and heavy particulate pollution may have on you. To obtain information on the air quality in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, please follow the link to the Environmental Protection Agency’s  AirNow website . Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City’s Air Quality Index (AQI) can be observed either by clicking on the Vietnam location on the map, or by selecting Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City in the “Select a City” option on the upper right part of the page. The page provides AQI over the last 24-hour period as well as pollutant concentration and a downloadable historical document.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety: Traffic in Vietnam is dangerous, chaotic, and undisciplined. Road conditions are poor; traffic accidents are the leading cause of death, severe injury, and emergency evacuation of foreigners in Vietnam. Long-distance buses and trains do not meet U.S. safety standards. Buses and trucks are often overloaded and travel at high speeds with little regard to other modes of road transportation.

Traffic Laws:  Driving in Vietnam is not comparable to driving in other countries. Vietnamese drivers routinely ignore traffic laws, causing traffic fatalities on a daily basis. We strongly discourage you from operating a motorcycle or scooter in Vietnam. Vietnamese drivers and pedestrians may not behave in a manner to which Americans are accustomed. If you do choose to operate a motorcycle or scooter in Vietnam, wear a helmet and  always  yield to larger vehicles. Motor bike fatalities are a leading cause of death or serious injury among foreign nationals visiting or living in Vietnam, with several fatalities having occurred on major roads and rural routes within the past year. If you are the victim of a serious motor bike accident in Vietnam, the prognosis for full recovery and survival is low due to Vietnam’s poor medical infrastructure. A motorbike license is required to operate a motorcycle or scooter in Vietnam. Motor scooter drivers without a license can be held criminally liable for injuries to or death of a victim in an accident, and you may be held in custody for an extended period of time without the ability to speak to family or a lawyer during the investigation.

Pedestrians should always look carefully  in both directions  before crossing streets, even when using a marked crosswalk with a green “walk” light illuminated or when crossing what is believed to be a one-way street. When walking on sidewalks, be mindful of scooters that may be behind you. Vietnamese commonly drive their scooters against traffic and on sidewalks.

Because the United States is not a party to the Convention on Road Traffic, international driving permits and U.S. drivers’ licenses are  not valid  in Vietnam. Foreigners renting vehicles risk fines, prosecution, and/or imprisonment for driving without a Vietnamese license endorsed for the appropriate vehicle. If you wish to drive in Vietnam, contact the Provincial Public Transportation Service of the Vietnamese Department of Communications and Transport to obtain a Vietnamese driver’s license. Note that you may be required to take a medical examination as part of the driver license application process.

For more information, please refer to Vietnam’s national tourism office website.

Public Transportation:

Bus System:  While Vietnam does have an extensive bus system, buses can be overcrowded and are often driven with little or no regard for passenger safety.

For-hire vehicles:   Major taxi companies tend to be reliable. Occasionally boutique taxi companies have rigged meters, particularly on routes to and from the international airports. Exercise caution in choosing ground transportation upon arrival at the airport in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. Some travelers have reported being robbed by drivers who greeted them upon arrival with a placard showing the traveler's name. If you are expecting to be picked up, ask the company for the driver’s name, phone number, and license plate number before you travel. Areas outside of large cities typically have only rudimentary public transportation and often do not have metered taxis. Travelers are advised to use caution in these situations.

We strongly discourage the use of motorcycle taxis (known as “xe om”). Motorcycle taxis are unregulated and unsafe, and the helmets provided to riders offer little to no protection against injury in the case of an accident.

Smartphone-based for-hire vehicle services:  GrabTaxi and local taxi companies are readily available, accessible via Smartphone apps, and routinely utilized by foreigners and locals.

Aviation Safety Oversight: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Vietnam’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Vietnam’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel: Mariners planning travel to Vietnam should also check for  U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the  National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) broadcast warnings website  portal.

Vietnam Travel Tips - What to Know Before Visiting Vietnam

I f you’re planning to travel Vietnam, there are a few things you need to be aware of. As a first time visitor it can be stressful not to know what to expect. There were a few things I wish I’d known before I went. So if you’re going to Vietnam, check out my top Vietnam travel tips to help you prepare!

1. Get Your Visa in Advance

If you’re visiting Vietnam, you’re going to need a visa to enter. Fortunately, it’s fairly simple to get and you can do it before your trip. In fact, airlines won’t even let you fly to Vietnam if you don’t have your visa ready. One person in our group had the wrong date (1 day later) on her visa and had to stay in the airport and buy a new flight. So make sure you get dates and airports right when you apply.

Also, be sure your application name matches your passport. I forgot to enter my middle name on my visa and had to redo it after it got rejected for not matching my passport.

You can apply for the Vietnam e visa here .

It looks a little sketchy, but I promised it worked. The cost of the Vietnam visa is $25 for single entry . After your application is approved, your visa will be emailed to you.

When you arrive at the airport in Vietnam, there will be a line to show your passport and visa. You can save it on your phone or print it out. I did both, just to be safe, but showed them my paper visa.

2. Go at the right time

Ok, there’s no wrong time to to Vietnam, but you might want to go at the time that’s right for you ! I went to Vietnam in January and February and our weather was fantastic. Hot in Hoi An, warm in Hanoi, and warm in Halong Bay, but chilly at night. We were also there during Tet (Lunar New Year), Vietnam’s most important celebration, so it was incredible to see all the decorations and preparation for the New Year! Here are some weather guidelines for each area of Vietnam.

North Vietnam (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa)

  • Best Time to visit Northern Vietnam : September to November (Autumn) and March to April (Spring)
  • Why? : The weather is pleasant with moderate temperatures and less rain, making it ideal for exploring the bustling streets of Hanoi, cruising through Ha Long Bay, or trekking in Sapa.

Central Vietnam (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An)

  • Best Time to visit Central Vietnam : January to August
  • Why? : Central Vietnam has warm weather during these months, perfect for visiting the ancient town of Hoi An, the beaches of Da Nang, or the historical sites in Hue. The rainy season starts in September and can bring heavy downpours and occasional typhoons, especially in October and November.

South Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta)

  • Best Time to Visit South Vietnam : December to April (Dry season)
  • Why? : The weather is warm and dry, ideal for exploring the vibrant life in Ho Chi Minh City or venturing into the Mekong Delta. The rainy season from May to November can see short, heavy showers, but travel is still possible during these months.

3. Visit More than One City

Vietnam is probably a lot bigger than you realize. And it’s very long, so destinations are quite spread out. Many people make the mistake of only visiting one large city in Vietnam and not doing any day trips or visiting another area of Vietnam. It is very affordable to get around Vietnam and you can get a cheap flight within the country, so it’s worth seeing more than one destination in the country.

major cities

4. Download the Grabb App

If you plan to get around by car in Vietnam, you should download the Grabb App. It’s like UBER or Lyft for Asia and it works really well. I used it all over Vietnam and Thailand without any issue. If you’re not in the mood to barter with taxi drivers or don’t have a lot of cash, this is a good way to go. It felt safer and easier to do this.

5. Pack Layers

The weather in Vietnam is really varied. When you look at a map you can see why…it’s a very LONG country at over 1,000 miles long! So the weather in Northern vietnam and Southern Vietnam can be very different. We spent a few days in Hoi An, a few days in Hanoi, and a few days in Halong Bay, and the weather on the Bay was much cooler than the rest of our trip.

I packed sun dresses, pants, and jackets and I was glad to have them all! Just be sure to check the weather of each destination in Vietnam. Trips are always better when you have the right clothes!

6. Bring an Extra Bag for Souvenirs

I’m not normally a huge shopper when I travel, but there were some great things I wanted to bring home in Vietnam. Luckily I had this great packable duffel that has been with me on many trips! It is HUGE and holds so much and is super sturdy!

Some things that I purchased in Vietnam:

  • Lanterns – So many lanterns! One that I made in this class , and a bunch more that I purchased from a local shop.
  • Silk Paintings – Probably my most favorite souvenir from Vietnam was the silk painting I purchased from a man disabled from the effects of Agent Orange, a chemical used to clear vegetation during the Vietnam War. Vietnam is famous for its silk paintings, which are embroidered on fabric and absolutely beautiful! They come in all sizes and different levels of detail made by local people. They can be anywhere from $5 USD to $500 USD depending on where you buy yours, how detailed it is, and how long it took to create. They are stunning though!
  • Custom Clothing – Hoi An in particular is famous for its custom clothing tailors. You can get just about anything sewn to your liking while you’re there. Some tailors specialize in suits and some specialize in formal ware. Check reviews on Google before picking your tailor. We chose Rosa Tailor, mostly because she was across the street from our hotel and had a 5-star review on Google! I had two custom linen sets and two custom skirts made in just a few hours. It was so much fun to experience it and I love my clothes!

7. Have Cash on Hand

When traveling Vietnam, be sure to get cash out when you get to Vietnam or bring Vietnamese Dong from your bank with you. We needed a lot of cash in Vietnam. A few places took cards, but mostly it was cash only, especially in the local markets and for street food. I think I took about $300 Vietnam Dong out at the ATM and that lasted me about a week.

8. Drink Safe Water and Eat Safe Food

Food and water safety are always a concern of mine when traveling. And while I want to try all of the delicious food at the street food stalls and experience the local culture through food, I also don’t want to be sick for the rest of my trip (been there, done that)!

Try not to eat any raw vegetables fruit with a skin that could have been washed in contaminated water. Examples are lettuce, raw carrots, apples, etc. Peeled fruit and cooked vegetables are usually safe.

A good way to experience Vietnamese food is to take a cooking class from a reputable company where you have control over how the food is prepared and the water being used. Most classes will cater to a western audience and understand water concerns. Here is a list of good cooking classes.

  • Hoi An Cooking Class https://www.getyourguide.com/hoi-an-l831/hoi-an-tra-que-herb-village-cooking-class-t518142/?partner_id=67O18VU&utm_medium=online_publisher&cmp=VietnamTips
  • Hanoi Cooking Class https://www.getyourguide.com/hanoi-l205/hanoi-traditional-cooking-class-learning-5-famous-dishes-t563666/?partner_id=67O18VU&utm_medium=online_publisher&cmp=VietnamTips
  • Ho Chi Minh Cooking Class https://www.getyourguide.com/ho-chi-minh-city-l272/4-course-hands-on-vietnamese-cooking-lesson-in-small-group-t125720/?partner_id=67O18VU&utm_medium=online_publisher&cmp=VietnamTips

Another concern is water. This is probably one of the most important Vietnam travel tips. Don’t drink the tap water! Water can be tricky in Vietnam. You should avoid drinking tap water. Either only use sealed drinking water or bring a good filter water bottle. This is the one I use.

Despite all your best efforts, you may still get sick. I recommend asking your doctor for any meds that might help with bacterial sickness in case you do get sick. I take prescribed antibiotics with me whenever I travel, but my doctor travels to India frequently and gets it! Another option is to see a travel nurse, although any time I go they seem to go overboard and end up scaring me with all the possibilities of my inevitable death!

I also highly recommend getting travel insurance for your trip, because you never know!

9. Be Prepared for Some Hard History

Americans visiting Vietnam should be aware of the country’s complex and difficult history.

When traveling to Vietnam, be prepared to face some hard history. Visiting Vietnam as an American can be a deeply moving and eye-opening experience, given the country’s complex past, particularly concerning the Vietnam War (known in Vietnam as the American War or the Vietnam American War). This period from the late 1950s to 1975 left indelible marks on both nations, shaping their histories, cultures, and peoples in profound ways.

The hardest part for me was seeing victims of Agent Orange, which was a chemical used during the war to clear the jungle vegetation. This chemical affected the genetics of people living in Vietnam, and in turn their children who wouldn’t be born for years to come. I think we will see these lasting effects for a while. It was hard to see this, knowing that my country was part of the cause, but they were all very friendly and welcoming to us as Americans.

10. Book Activities Before You Go

My last Vietnam travel tip is to book ahead. While some people can visit Vietnam and wing their activities, I like to have things planned and scheduled, I like to arrange trips to nearby places, and some tours do book up during busier times, so I think it’s a good idea to have at least a few things planned and booked ahead of time, especially for your first time visit to Vietnam. Here are some of the activities I recommend planning ahead for to avoid unnecessary stress:

  • Hoi An Jeep Tour
  • Lantern Making Class
  • Ninh Binh Day Tour
  • Ho Chi Minh Cooking Class

Frequently Asked Questions

1. can americans visit vietnam.

3. Can I use US dollars in Vietnam?

While some hotels, restaurants, and shops in tourist areas might accept US dollars, it’s more common to use Vietnamese Dong (VND) for everyday transactions. It’s advisable to carry local currency, especially when traveling outside major cities or shopping at local markets.

Mexico is stopping nearly three times as many migrants now, helping keep U.S. border crossings down

Migrants arriving to Guatemala.

Mexico is stopping nearly three times as many migrants who have crossed its southern border as it was a year ago, a trend that U.S. officials say has helped blunt the surge in crossings of the U.S. border usually seen at this time of year.

Biden administration officials also point to the increased help from Mexico in slowing migration as proof that their relationship with their southern neighbors is more effective than the Trump administration’s.

Former President Donald Trump has derided President Joe Biden’s record and claimed that his administration was more successful at controlling the border.

Early last year, Mexico interdicted roughly 100,000 migrants at its southern border or inside Mexico per month, while the U.S. was apprehending over 193,000 migrants monthly at the U.S.-Mexico border. This year, more migrants are being stopped inside Mexico than in the U.S., with over 280,000 being interdicted in Mexico and 189,000 in the U.S. in March, according to figures obtained by NBC News.

The Mexican government doesn’t publicly share its migrant interdiction numbers like the U.S. does.

The high numbers of migrants stopped in Mexico show how chaotic the U.S. border could become if Mexico cannot sustain its interdiction efforts. Another spike in border crossings could hurt Biden in the coming election.

According to Customs and Border Protection officials, April’s figures, which have yet to be publicly released, are expected to continue to show relatively low numbers compared to the seasonal uptick typically seen in April and May.It isn’t known how many of the migrants Mexico intercepts are actually deported. Many migrants are stopped by Mexican officials at the Guatemala-Mexico border and promptly returned to Guatemala, immigration advocates told NBC News.

Many others are being stopped in northern Mexico and bused to the southern end of the country. From there, they can’t use the CBP One app on their mobile phones to make appointments for U.S. asylum hearings, since the app doesn’t work south of Mexico City, said Amy Fischer, director of refugee and migrant rights at Amnesty International USA.

“In one way, they are doing the dirty work of the U.S. in order to keep people from accessing the U.S. southern border and exercising their right to seek safety,” Fischer said.

Certain groups, like unaccompanied children and migrants traveling as families, receive special protection under Mexican law that limits their deportation.

U.S. officials say Mexico’s willingness to interdict more migrants, a costly process, is in large part due to increased dialogue between the two countries on issues like immigration, fentanyl and illegal firearms trafficking.

Both Biden and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, known as AMLO, recognized the severity of the problem at the end of last year when Mexico’s funding to stop migrants ran low and the number of migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border surged to record highs.

At the end of December, Biden held a call with López Obrador and sent Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Mexico to meet with their counterparts. Since then, Mexico has interdicted at least 270,000 migrants each month.

“President Biden and President AMLO have developed a relationship in which they talk about the shared challenges [of migration], and they both jointly recognize the shared challenges,” a senior Biden administration official said. “They’ve had multiple conversations and multiple calls over the last couple of years tackling and talking about this issue.”

The Trump administration threatened Mexico with increased tariffs and disruptions in trade if it didn’t comply with policies like Remain in Mexico, which forced immigrants seeking asylum in the U.S. to wait in poor conditions in northern Mexico.

“We have treated Mexico with respect as a sovereign equal,” the senior Biden administration official said. “That’s a difference with this administration’s approach.”

A history of cooperation

The Biden administration isn’t the first to work jointly with Mexico to address migration and other border issues.

In 2008, during George W. Bush’s administration, the Merida Initiative — a security agreement between the U.S. and Mexico — was launched to reduce violence and fight drug trafficking. Congress approved $1.5 billion for the initiative over two years, enabling the purchase of equipment like helicopters and other aircraft to support the efforts of Mexican law enforcement.

During the Obama administration, the U.S. and Mexico expanded cooperation to include combating transnational criminal organizations by providing forensic equipment and training to Mexican law enforcement and improving immigration enforcement in Mexico.

The Trump administration focused on reducing synthetic drug production and refining border interdiction and port security. In 2018, it reportedly wanted to pay Mexico $20 million to help deport thousands of migrants who entered Mexico in hope of reaching the U.S. The sum, according to CNN  and  The New York Times , would be used to fund bus and airplane tickets to send migrants back to their home countries. In 2019, Trump  stopped threatening tariffs  against Mexico after it agreed to crack down on crossings of its southern border. Mexico deployed 6,000 troops to its border with Guatemala to intercept migrants.

During the Biden administration, the U.S. and Mexico announced a new security cooperation agreement in 2021 called the Bicentennial Framework. The Bicentennial Framework replaced the Merida Initiative and emphasized preventing transborder crime by minimizing human and arms trafficking and disrupting illicit drug supply chains.
