"I would just like to say, you do an amazing job, always helpful, friendly. Provide an amazing service."

Thames River Cruises

Uber Boat by Thames Clippers is the fastest, most frequent and reliable fleet on the River Thames - carrying over 4 million passengers last year. Unlike most other forms of public transport, we are always reliable - the only days our river boats don’t run are Christmas and Boxing Day.

Thames River Boats

Our Thames river boats are fully equipped with comfortable seating and plenty of space. Our larger river boats all have licenced on-board bars, with a range of coffees, snacks and alcoholic drinks. They all have toilet facilities, and some even have baby changing facilities. Our Thames river buses have Metro and City AM newspapers available on board and Free Wi-Fi is available at our main piers. The experience of travelling through London on a Thames river bus is unlike any other form of travel, providing an epic experience for its users. Far more enjoyable than struggling for space on a packed London Underground tube, quicker than driving or getting the bus, and less exhausting than walking or riding your bike!

Our History

Starting in 1999 with just one boat in operation, our fleet has grown exponentially to 20 high-speed Thames river boats, offering services from all major London piers every 10-20 minutes. Our services cater for everyone from early morning commuters to night-time passengers. There are countless reasons to choose a London River Bus over any other form of transport – choose a Thames river cruise next time you need to travel through London.

London’s best Thames river cruises

Get a whole new perspective of the city with these top Thames river cruises

Think you’ve ticked off everything London has to offer? Think again. Try a Thames river cruise – and no, we’re not talking about the Clippers (well we are, but only a little bit). There are few better ways to take in the capital than by its famously choppy, murky central waterway. Plus the views, from Hampton Court down to the City and Greenwich, are some of the absolute finest our city has to offer.

It's time to ditch dry land and hop aboard a Thames river boat tour. And plenty of London’s top attractions are best seen from the water – so get your camera ready.

Best Thames river cruises in London

Thames Rockets

Thames Rockets

  • Ships and boats

Bring your waterproofs, because the slick RIB (rigid inflatable boat) operation offers a high-speed ride on the Thames. It's a great way to discover how exhilarating it can be to swoop along the Thames at almost 30 knots – that’s nearly 35 mph, nautical novices! We're not sure how much you'll actually be able to see, but there are plenty more leisurely-paced tours for that sorta thing.

Bateaux London Cruises

Bateaux London Cruises

  • Victoria Embankment

A good river cruise for those who want a spot of grub while taking in the sights along the Thames – Bateaux offer a full range of different dining cruises. There’s the lunch, afternoon tea and dinner cruise – or you could really pull the stops out and enjoy their three-course lunch with a live jazz band playing assorted swingin’ classics. All river cruises depart from Victoria Embankment.

City Cruises

City Cruises

  • Things to do
  • Walks and tours

Want to see the city in style? City cruises operate on a hop-on, hop-off basis and run from Westminster, Waterloo, Tower and Greenwich Piers with commentary along the way. All the departure points are convenient for the city’s various sights, with Greenwich Pier ideal for the Cutty Sark, the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Observatory.

London Duck Tours

London Duck Tours

Praise whichever brilliant mind decided to paint the scant remaining WW2 landing vehicles in bright, rubber-duck yellow! These duck city tours take in all the typical land-based sights – then has two ‘splashdowns’ into the Thames as it goes into nautical mode and takes passengers around Docklands, Canary Wharf and Greenwich.

Thames RIB Experience

Thames RIB Experience

  • Sightseeing

Instead of a usual tour’s drab history lessons and endless stream of tedious facts, why not try something a little more thrilling? The Thames RIB Experience is more like a rollercoaster than a classic sightseeing tour, and sees passengers jetted across the water at an impressive 45mph. Lifejackets and waterproofs are provided (fortunately), leaving you free to enjoy whizzing around in figure-eights in open water between Tower Bridge and the Isle of Dogs. Try and take in some sights as the high winds reshape your face.

Thames River Boats

Thames River Boats

Thames River Boats take you all the way from the Palace of Westminster upriver to Hampton Court Palace. It’s a pretty leisurely 22-mile journey: in 90 minutes you’ll be at Kew; in another 90, you’ll be at Hampton Court. But this westward route is a lovely way to appreciate the Thames, as the banks get greener, less cluttered with high-rise buildings and the river buses are replaced by rowers.

Thames Clippers

Thames Clippers

These days the Thames Clippers are better known as ‘Uber Boats’, not because they’re the most incredible boats but because, you guessed it, they’re sponsored by a taxi company. Sure, they don’t go very fast (trundling along at a very leisurely 30mph), but they’re a pretty underrated, cost-effective way to traverse the Thames.

Vintage Red Bus Tour and Thames Cruise

Vintage Red Bus Tour and Thames Cruise

Why choose between the road and the river when you can have both? First up on this guided tour you'll be driven round the capital in a routemaster (that's the old red double decker bus), before boarding a Thames Cruiser to view the sites from the water. Sail past landmarks like Shakespeare's Globe and Tower Bridge, before getting back on the bus and heading to her Maj's residence: Buckingham Palace. There's also the option to add a ticket for the London Eye on this package.

Tate to Tate Boat

Tate to Tate Boat

A connecting service between either art institution, the Tate to Tate Boat runs every 40 minutes. Aside from getting you from one gallery to another, it’s also great for taking in lots of central London scenery. As you might expect, the boat itself is an arty affair: YBA Damien Hirst covered both the exterior and interior with his trademark spots. It’s also genuinely the quickest way to travel from Tate to Tate – this way, you avoid an irritatingly convoluted tube or bus journey.

River Thames Cruise Prices and Reviews

What is the best london river cruise.

river trips in thames

While our free London walking tours are a great way to see and learn a lot about the city, Thames River cruises offer a completely different perspective that you might also enjoy.

The most popular type of river cruise is a hop-on hop-off tour , allowing you to stop and get off the boat at various docks on the Thames.

Here are the top cruise services in London:

City Cruises

Uber Boat by Thames Clippers

Thames river service.

There are also special cruise services such as Tate to Tate by Thames Clippers , connecting both historic museums by boat.

Alternatively, you might also want to consider a circular loop without any stops, or perhaps a speedboat ride during the summer.

Like many cities, there are also lunch and dinner cruises available on the Thames River.

If you're in North London, you might want to consider a canal cruise around Little Venice and Camden Lock instead.

Concerned about the price? Check our list of combo packages that include a Thames River cruise for free!

Although we do our best to provide a balanced look at these services, it's important to get other perspectives, so we've also included a selection of recommendations from members of our London Travel Tips Facebook group.

Disclosure:  While our recommendations are always unbiased, we may receive a small share of sales through some of the links below at no cost to you. See the  full text .

TIP: When planning your boat tour or cruise, make sure to check out the  weather in London beforehand.

HOP-ON-HOP-OFF THAMES RIVER CRUISES

If you’re looking for a boat tour or cruise that will allow you the freedom to explore at your own pace, consider one of the following companies.

Although there aren’t many London boat services that specialize specifically in hop-on-hop-off Thames cruises, there are a few that provide the opportunity to explore London however you wish.

You can choose to purchase one single ride, a discounted return ticket, or a 24-hour travel pass with unlimited rides.

TIP: Many of these cruises are included for free or at a lower cost with any of the many London tourist attraction passes available to you.

City Cruises is probably the most well-known company offering a basic Thames River cruise. They are also the best value for the money.

City Cruises also offers speedboat tours and lunch and dinner cruises .

City Cruises offers both single tickets and a hop-on-hop-off service with 4 stops between Westminster and Greenwich. The hop-on-hop-off ticket is called the River Pass.

The River Pass is a 24-hour pass that gives you unlimited access to the river for 24 hours. There is live commentary on every journey.

For just a few pounds more, you can get a 72-hour River Pass giving you three days to use the service.

Guests can sit on the open-aired top of the boat, or inside downstairs if the London weather gets a bit wet or chilly.

TIP:  City Cruises' hop-on-hop-off service is  included for free for holders of a London Pass , a tourist attraction discount card. It is also  included for free  with the purchase of a 24 or 48-hour hop-on, hop-off open-top bus ticket with Tootbus Tours.

Click on the map for a larger view .

If you are planning on taking at least two rides, we recommend that you buy a River Pass. This pass gives you unlimited travel between their piers.

River Pass Tickets

24-Hour Pass

  • £23 Adults (16+)
  • £15.45 for Children (5-15)
  • Free for Infants (4 and under)

Cruises run every 30 minutes. Exact departure times depend on which pier you wish to depart from. (Frequency changes seasonally).

Highlights along the cruise include the London Eye, OXO Tower, London Bridge, The Shard, Tower of London, Tower Bridge, and Greenwich.

TIP:  City Cruises hop-on-hop-off service is usually  included for free for holders of a London Sightseeing Pass , a tourist attraction discount card. It is also  included for free  with the purchase of a 24 or 48-hour hop-on, hop-off open-top bus ticket with Tootbus Tours.

Reviews of City Cruises

river trips in thames

City Cruises sports a 4 out of 5 stars  rating on TripAdvisor along with mostly positive reviews.

Thousands of reviewers have given them a 5-star rating, which is a good sign.

The negative comments that have been left often mention unforeseen technical issues with the boats or scheduling software.

To avoid any issues, make sure to arrive early for your cruise and call them the day before your excursion to make sure there are no problems.

Thames Clippers is a commuter boat service that sells single-ride tickets.

But, they also offer a day ticket, called Uber Boat, that gives you unlimited hop-on, hop-off travel for one day (between 10 am and 11 pm).

The Uber Boat is valid in their Central and East Zone lines which include 18 piers including Greenwich, Tower, Westminster, and more. Boats depart every 20 minutes.

Prices and the length of the trip vary depending on what route you select.

There are a total of ten different tours offered out of Westminster, Greenwich, and St. Katharine's.

Additionally, this boat tour company provides transportation to popular sightseeing locations such as the Thames Barrier and the Tower of London.

Guests have the option to pay for a one-way ticket or round-trip fare as well as a hop-on, hop-off ticket (through Circular Cruises).

Tate to Tate by Thames Clippers

This route on the Thames Clippers service is the "RB2 Tate to Tate".

It takes visitors between the two Tate Museums: the free  Tate Modern  at Bankside Pier and Tate Britain at Millbank Pier.

Boats run every 30 minutes. It is a 20-minute ride and is within the Central Zone so this is a one-zone ticket.

The boats have both outdoor and indoor seating. As this is not a sightseeing boat there is no live commentary.

It is, however, a great way to get out onto the water and move quickly between museums and their surrounding neighborhoods.

You can purchase tickets in advance online from the Tate Shop website , or before you board a boat from a self-serve kiosk on the pier.

You can also use your  Oyster card , if you have one, upon boarding the boat.

When you purchase, look for the RB2 service, a central zone ticket price.

Tips From Locals and Travelers

Assuming you've read all or even just some of this post, you've had the chance to see our recommendations when it comes to Thames River cruises. However, it's important to get a variety of opinions when it comes to these types of services.

Thankfully, many members of our London Travel Tips group on Facebook will offer their own thoughts on these cruise companies, and we've included some of their most helpful suggestions here.

river trips in thames

It can get pretty cold in London during the winter, so travelers might be surprised to learn that they actually do keep most of the Thames River cruises open all year.

While it can get cold, pretty much every company uses boats with an indoor area where you can stay warm as you enjoy the ride.

river trips in thames

Even so, it is recommended to bundle up during the winter anyways, so you shouldn't be too cold on a river cruise boat as long as you wear warm clothing.

river trips in thames

A lot of locals recommend using the Uber Boat, because it's a very easy and consistent service and it offers stops all along the Thames, even in Greenwich.

river trips in thames

The reason this river cruise boat is so popular is because it's often used as transportation by people who live in London, and in fact they rely upon these boats to get to and from work.

river trips in thames

Locals also note that you can pay for the Uber Boat by using an Oyster Card, and they offer discounts for card holders.

Even better, once you get past the Tower Bridge, the boat will speed up and allow you to get around the city much quicker!

river trips in thames

If you're wondering whether to take a hop-on hop-off tour on the river or a dinner cruise, it's worth noting that the dinner cruise does not include any commentary.

Travelers who want to learn more about the city while cruising down the Thames might not enjoy the dinner cruise as much, but it's still a great service for anyone who wants to enjoy the view of London as the sun is setting!

river trips in thames

Other travelers suggest skipping the dinner cruise and hopping on the speed boat. As Trish notes, these boats will wait until they are in clear waters and take off at thrilling speeds!

Henley on Thames

Home of the Royal Regatta, a stunning riverside town steeped in history and packed full of world class eateries

Henley on Thames

Henley on Thames is one of the jewels of the river, a stunning reach , complete with the long near straight regatta course, the iconic Temple Island downstream of the town and stone multi-arch bridge dating back to 1786. Henley is packed full of boutiques, cafes, pubs (it is the original home of Brakspears Brewery) and high-quality restaurants. Shortly after exiting Marsh Lock at the top of the reach, parkland opens up on the Oxfordshire bank and the River and Rowing Museum comes in to view which is a drop-off and boarding point for many of our Henley cruises. Head further downstream and you reach the centre of the town, dating back to the 1100s and even today boasting a street layout that was set out in the 1300s. Modern Henley embraces its place in history and has protected the period charm. For one week in summer the sound of popping corks and clinking of Pimms glasses takes over as regatta followers watch elite rowing teams from across the globe, battle against one another in a way that has not changed dramatically for decades.

'Hometown hero' Emeril Lagasse makes surprise stops in Fall River. Here's why he was here.

FALL RIVER — It was just a typical Sunday for a few local eateries, then BAM! In walks one of Fall River's most famous former residents , celebrity chef and James Beard winner Emeril Lagasse.

"We were very loud on Sunday and it switched to murmurs really quickly," said Andrew Ferreira, co-owner of Europa Pastries and Coffee Shop , which received a surprise visit from Lagasse amid their morning rush.

The city native was in town doing research for his first Portuguese restaurant he plans to open in New Orleans late this summer. Research included a trip back to his roots for a culinary tour of popular Portuguese spots in the Providence, Fall River and New Bedford areas.

He and his Emeril Group team, which manages his 10 restaurants, flew in from New Orleans on Saturday, starting their tour at O Dinis in East Providence.

During his stop at O Dinis, Lagasse spoke to restaurant owner Natalia Paiva-Neves about growing up in Fall River and cooking Portuguese dishes with his mother, Miss Hilda.

And on Sunday his entourage made their rounds in the Spindle City, which included at least two stops on Columbia Street.

"I froze when I finally registered that it was really him. I said 'This is not real, is it?'" said Ferreira, who said he did a double take upon catching Lagasse's reflection in the mirror as he went about his daily routine of preparing coffee.

A sweet start at Europa Pastries

While there, Ferreira said Lagasse educated his colleagues on Portuguese traditions and culture of the Fall River area. Ferreira, his sister Erica Couto and her husband, Kevin, then chatted with him about the pastries their bakery is most known for.

So it's no surprise Lagasse's Europa order included their award-winning pastel de nata, or Portuguese custard cup.

Report: Fall River's Emeril among world's most popular chefs. Where is he on the list?

According to Ferreira, Lagasse wasn't at Europa very long, taking his treats to go, but he made a lasting impression on staff and customers all the same.

"It was brief, but it was enough to be star-struck and in awe that he was here," said Ferreira, who grew up watching Lagasse's TV show "Emeril Live!" every day and emulating the city-born chef.

"He was super nice. Anyone that came up to him he would speak to," Ferreira said. " He's definitely considered a hometown hero for a lot of those people."

Taste of Portugal at Sagres

A bit further up the cobblestoned sidewalks of Columbia Street, Lagasse and his crew dined that same day at Sagres Restaurant, well-known for its upscale, authentic Portuguese cuisine.

Victor DaSilva and his brother Manuel Ferreira, co-owners of the decades-old city staple, got a heads up about a week ago about Lagasse's visit.

"Somebody called in a reservation for Emeril Lagasse and we thought it was a joke," said DaSilva, whose disbelief dissipated as Emeril's table of six walked in the door.

The superstar chef sought a sampling of traditional Portuguese food and wines, leaving it up to DaSilva and Ferreira to order up an array of their most-loved entrees and appetizers.

Lagasse's Luso buffet at Sagres included shrimp and littleneck appetizers, followed by grilled octopus, one of Sagres' best sellers.

The spread also featured two types of cod fish dishes — baked cod (bacalhau) and Bacalhau a Gomes de Sa — Carne de Porco a Alentejana (marinated pork sautéed with littlenecks and potatoes) and Sagres' signature sirloin steak, the best measure of any good Portuguese eatery.

As with any customer who comes into his restaurant, DaSilva said "you always worry about making sure everything goes right," but he wouldn't call the experience nerve-wracking.

"They were really cool, very nice people," said DaSilva, whose restaurant has recently drawn other familiar faces such as former Patriots players Rob Ninkovich and Matt Light. "They said they loved the food, they loved Fall River, they loved the people … and that they'd love to return."

After their meal, the brothers shared a table with Lagasse, where they discussed the joys and challenges of the restaurant industry.

"I told him the people of Fall River are very proud of him," DaSilva said. "He's a big ambassador for the city, and in this case Portuguese food as well."

According to DaSilva, Lagasse was most gracious to the room full of excited customers and staff who exchanged words and took photos with the Fall River icon.

"He was very friendly. I think he felt like he was around his people here," said DaSilva, noting that some customers reminisced about how they knew his family.

What other Fall River-area spots did Emeril visit?

Lagasse's Sunday stops also included Portas Da Cidade Restaurant and Lounge in Westport, which shared a photo of their encounter with the memorable patron on Facebook.

"It was an honor and privilege to have Chef Emeril Lagasse and his team dine with us this afternoon. Chefs Ruben, Joe, and Emanuel made sure that everything is top notch as usual," read the Westport eatery's post.

On Monday, Lagasse continued his tour of Fall River hotspots by dining at the T.A. Restaurant on South Main Street, enjoying some Azorean cuisine and taking photos with restaurant managers. He also hit up Nick's Hot Dogs for a quick bite and visited Portugalia Marketplace , which has been host to numerous TV food shows and distinguished chefs over the years.

"He left us by saying, 'It’s not goodbye, it’s see you soon,’" read a Facebook post by the Twelfth Street shop.

Lagasse's multi-day stretch of restaurant hopping in Greater Fall River also included several other local businesses, who shared photos with their special guest. Lagasse was spotted at Fall River's Caldeiras Restaurant, Mee Sum Chinese restaurant, Mello's Chourico and Linguica and Sarmento's Imports, as well as Saraiva Enterprises in New Bedford.

Fall River strong: From Rhodes scholars to MMA fighters, 10 notable city natives

Emeril’s Fall River roots

Born in Fall River in 1959, Lagasse worked his way up from the kitchens of Fall River to kitchens all over the world.

An alumnus of Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School's culinary arts program, he started out washing pans at Carreiros Barcelos bakery on Bedford Street and cut his teeth at places like the Quequechan Club and St. John's Athletic Club in Fall River, as well as Venus de Milo in Swansea.

He went on to attend Johnson & Wales University in Providence, which set him on a path to an impressive culinary career spanning 33 years.

His famous New Orleans restaurant Emeril’s has spawned more than 20 restaurants nationwide. The celebrity chef has also hosted multiple award-winning TV cooking shows where he rode a catchphrase craze to national fame (“Bam,” “kick it up a notch,” “pork fat rules”), written cookbooks, and even played himself in a sitcom.

Fall River beginnings: Emeril Lagasse opens up about losing his 'second mom’

SouthCoast serving as inspiration for new restaurant

Lagasse's newest addition to his restaurant portfolio — the reason for his SouthCoast trip — will be named 34 Restaurant & Bar.

The number name reflects that father and son are the 3rd and 4th Emeril Lagasses. The celebrity chef's father was Emeril Jr.

The New Orleans restaurant, which he is planning with his son, 21-year-old chef E.J. Lagasse, will serve as a love letter to their Portuguese heritage.
