Top 10 Best Tarangire National Park Safari Camps & Lodges

Philip is a renowned Africa expert and author of the Bradt guidebook to Tanzania.

Tarangire National Park is the second-largest national park on Tanzania’s famous Northern safari circuit. Despite being less well known than the nearby Serengeti National Park, it supports much higher densities of elephant, making it a thoroughly worthwhile addition to any Tanzanian safari itinerary. Studded with ancient baobab trees, this underrated park is at its best in the Dry season, when large herds of wildlife are attracted to the Tarangire River. Elephants aside, other wildlife includes lion, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, a wide variety of antelope and more than 500 bird species.

When it comes to where to stay in Tarangire, there are numerous lodges and camps from which to choose. Some of these can be found within the national park, while others stand in the various wildlife management areas and community reserves that buffer its borders. Below are 10 of the best Tarangire safari lodges and camps.

The accommodations below are not ranked in a specific quality order.

2,504 Tarangire Safaris

1. Lake Burunge Tented Lodge

Lake Burunge Tented Lodge

Comfortable, good value and scenically located, Lake Burunge Tented Lodge is an excellent base for a safari in Tarangire National Park. It stands in a private concession managed by the local Mbugwe people. The luxury tented rooms and cottages have private terraces, while common areas offer a great view over Lake Burunge, a seasonal wildlife magnet that is very popular with elephants. The lodge is also well positioned for game drives, being only 10 minutes from Tarangire’s Sangaiwe Gate.

2. Tarangire Simba Lodge

Tarangire Simba Lodge

Constructed around one of the giant baobabs for which Tarangire is famous, this classic tented camp stands in a wildlife management area bordering the national park’s Sangaiwe Gate. The 16 spacious safari tents are all sheltered under a thatch roof and perched on a stilted wooden platform offering views toward Lake Burunge. The surrounding area offers excellent wildlife viewing, especially in the Dry season. We particularly like the free-form infinity pool, where you can enjoy a refreshing dip in view of the wildlife that regularly congregates at the waterhole.

3. Tarangire Safari Lodge

Tarangire Safari Lodge

True, there are more intimate and luxurious Tarangire safari camps and lodges. But Tarangire Safari Lodge remains my personal favorite. Partly it's the peerless setting, high on a ridge overlooking a stretch of the Tarangire River that attracts a steady stream of elephants. I also like the unpretentious vibe that you'd expect of a lodge that's had the same hands-on owner-managers since it opened in 1985. Importantly, Tarangire’s oldest lodge also has a prime position for game drives, a few minutes from a tract of grassland dubbed Little Serengeti. The in-house bird watching is fabulous, and there's a large swimming pool.

4. Tarangire Sopa Lodge

Tarangire Sopa Lodge

Tarangire Sopa Lodge is very different from other accommodation in the national park. Containing 75 guest rooms, it is by far the largest of the Tarangire safari lodges. And its physical solidity – structures built with bricks and tiles, rather than canvas and thatch – makes it a reassuring first choice for nervous first-time safari-goers. Other positives include the stunning swimming pool area, the excellent choice of food and a perfect location for exploring the park's most reliably rewarding wildlife-viewing circuit.

5. Nimali Tarangire

Nimali Tarangire

Among the most exclusive and luxurious of Tarangire safari camps, Nimali stands alongside a baobab-and-acacia-lined riverbed in a private Maasai concession bordering the national park. The ultra-spacious accommodation here is hard to beat: 10 hybrid tents with slate tile floors, earthy decor, state-of-the-art bathrooms and wide private balconies. The dining area and swimming pool overlook a waterhole where elephants often come to drink. Nimali is conveniently located for game drives, and night drives and walking safaris are available within the concession.

6. Sanctuary Swala Camp

Sanctuary Swala Camp

One of the most southerly accommodation options within Tarangire, Swala is a classic safari camp comprising a dozen luxurious tented units. It is tucked away in a tall stand of acacia trees overlooking the Gurusi Swamp and a small waterhole that regularly attracts elephants, lions and leopards. I love the secluded location far from the main game-drive circuit. There’s plenty of wildlife around, but it’s one of the best places to stay in Tarangire if you want to feel like you have the park to yourself. Also very enjoyable are bush dinners in a nearby baobab grove.

7. Elewana Tarangire Treetops

Elewana Tarangire Treetops

If you like your accommodation to come with a wow factor, look no further than Elewana Tarangire Treetops. Situated just outside the national park, in a private concession leased from a local Maasai community, this innovative lodge comes across like a setting for an African fairy tale. Sumptuous treehouse-like cottages are made of wood and canvas and perched in the canopy of a grove of ancient baobabs.

This spacious and stylish accommodation makes Elewana Tarangire Treetops one of the best places to stay in Tarangire for honeymooners or jet-lagged new arrivals. And when venturing out, day game drives in the national park can be supplemented by a range of other guided activities within the concession. These include walking safaris, night drives, Maasai village visits and sundowner cocktails on a nearby hill.

8. Tarangire Kuro Treetops Lodge

Tarangire Kuro Treetops Lodge

Situated in the wildlife-rich heart of the national park, this medium-sized lodge has a wonderful location on a baobab-studded hill overlooking the Tarangire River. Each of the 25 luxury tents stands on a tall stilted platform that incorporates a well-appointed private veranda. Leather and hardwood furnishings, complemented by tasteful touches such as wicker-basket chairs and clawfoot baths, create a classic contemporary feel.

9. Oliver’s Camp

Oliver's Camp

Enjoy the simple comforts of a vintage safari at Asilia Africa’s exclusive Oliver’s Camp. Established by the conservationist Paul Oliver in 1992, this pioneering small camp retains an intimate wilderness feel in keeping with its ecofriendly founding values. Because it stands some distance from the main safari circuit, Oliver's can offer a broad range of activities unavailable at most other Tarangire safari camps and lodges.

These activities include expertly guided walking safaris, reliably rewarding night drives, and overnight fly camping. Although Oliver’s is clearly aimed at relatively adventurous travelers, the 10 thatch-shaded tented units are spacious and luxurious, with wide wooden balconies that look out onto the surrounding plains.

10. Kuro Safari Camp Tarangire

Kuro Tarangire

If you’ve stayed at any of Nomad Tanzania’s other 13 camps, you’ll head to Kuro Tarangire with high expectations. Once there, we think you're unlikely to be disappointed. This exclusive Tarangire safari camp comprises just six luxurious cottages, all made with canvas, wood, sisal and thatch to create a welcoming organic feel. Kuro is an all-inclusive setup, and the imaginative cuisine, expertly guided activities and attentive service all match up to Nomad Tanzania’s usual high standards.

Location of Oliver's Camp

Oliver’s is in the remote south-eastern reaches of Tarangire National Park, in northern Tanzania, close to the game-rich Silale Swamps. In April and May, at the end of the annual rains, the landscape is lush and dotted with wildflowers. From August until October, herds of antelope and zebras pass through Tarangire. At this time, the park has the highest concentration of mammals in the country.

Throughout the year, Tarangire is home to large herds of elephants and buffalo and a high concentration of big cats. There are also animals such as wild dogs, kudu, oryx and gerenuks that won’t be found in the north of Tanzania. And for birders, there are more than 550 species, many of which are attracted to the park’s swamps.

Where the safari comes to you

Oliver’s is low-key and comfortable, reminiscent of the safari camps of old. Sink into one of the sofas in the lounge and dining area with a good book or keep an eye out for passing zebras and elephants from your deck. Meals are served communally in our dining room, after which we gather around the campfire for a nightcap and safari tales.

A typical day on safari at Oliver's Camp

We head out on game drives or walks first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon when temperatures are cooler. Exact times differ slightly with the seasons, but we aim to get you out and about when the animals are at their most active. If you have booked a private vehicle, you can discuss your own schedule with your guide.

Start the day with an early morning wake-up call and a cup of tea or coffee. Have some breakfast before you depart for a game drive or walk or opt to take a picnic with you to enjoy in the bush. By mid-morning, you’ll be back in camp with some time to relax and freshen up before lunch.

It’s siesta time for most of the afternoon, when temperatures reach their peak. Take the opportunity to relax with a book or have a nap. Then it’s on to afternoon tea before you depart for a game drive with sundowners. Round off another perfect day in the bush with drinks by the campfire and dinner with good company.

Game drives

Our game drives depart first thing in the morning and late in the afternoon, when the temperatures are cooler and animals are more active. We use open-sided vehicles where everyone has a window seat. They even have power points and fridges, to keep your cameras charged and drinks chilled. Please enquire if you are interested in booking a private vehicle, ideal for those who have special interests. Please note that families with children under 12 must be in a private vehicle.

Oliver's Big Bull Elephant

Night drives

At Oliver’s, we have the opportunity to head out into the park at night . You can stay out later if you’ve spotted something interesting or head back into the bush after dinner to spot nocturnal animals. Our vehicles are equipped with powerful spotlights to make sure you don’t miss a thing.

Night Drive

Walking safaris

Our expert guides, accompanied by an armed national park ranger for safety, lead fascinating walking safaris that allow you to stop and examine the small things — ants, termites, dung beetles — often overlooked on a drive. Try your hand at tracking by learning to identify animal spoor and dung. And you might even have the thrilling experience of passing right by some of Tarangire’s larger animals.

12. Oliver's Walking Safari,

Hot-air balloon rides

For romance, drama and excitement, it doesn’t get better than a sunrise  flight in a hot-air balloon . Sail across the plains, spotting wildlife and watching the dawn light illuminate the grasslands below. Hot-air balloon trips are at extra cost and are weather dependent. Booking is essential.

Family safaris

Oliver’s is a great choice for families. We welcome children over 5 years old and have a family tent that sleeps four (kids under 12 should share with an adult). Note that Oliver’s does not have personal guides or special programmes for children, but we will always do our best to welcome your family. Please speak to your agent about hiring a private vehicle.

Meals and refreshments

Our meals are cooked in-camp and served al fresco whenever possible. Start the day with a continental breakfast or bacon and eggs. Lunch is a light buffet and dinner is a three-course sit-down meal. Every week, we host a big barbecue for all guests. If you’d like to spend more time out in the bush, we can prepare a picnic breakfast or lunch.

We support local communities: Our produce is sourced in Arusha and our honey is from a local women’s project.

We can cater to most dietary requirements. Please let us know before your arrival so we can prepare.

What to expect during the year

The best months to visit Tarangire are September and October, when the peak season crowds have thinned and the dry conditions are still excellent for wildlife spotting. That said, Oliver’s is a year-round camp, where the wet seasons are great for photography and birding .

Why travel at this time

There’s usually a break in the rains in January and February before the long rains begin in March. Migratory birds are in the region and photographic conditions are great, with lush landscapes and clear skies. There are also fewer tourists travelling to the region at this time.

This is the hottest time of year, with an average high of 29°C/84°F. The average dips to about 16°C/61°F. Expect some showers in January and February. The long rains begin in March.

Low temp: 16°C / 61°F

High temp: 29°C / 84°F

Rainfall: 81mm / 3.2in

April sees the most rainfall, at the peak of the long rains. They slow in May with afternoon showers that shouldn’t affect your safari too much. It’s a good time to avoid the crowds and have wildlife viewings to yourself. This is also the cheapest time to travel. June is dry and a great month to visit, just before peak season kicks off.

April is the wettest month of the year with an average high of 27°C/81°F, while May sees less rain and slightly cooler temperatures, peaking at 25°C/77°F with an average low of 16°C/61°F. June is the start of the dry season, with an average high of 25°C/77°F and a low of 14°C/57°F.

Low temp: 14°C / 57°F

High Temp: 25°C / 77°F

Rainfall: 5mm / 0.2in

It’s peak season in Tarangire, but this doesn’t affect Oliver’s Camp, given its location in a private concession. The dry conditions are perfect for spotting wildlife gathering around waterholes.

The maximum temperature of the dry season ranges from 24°C/75°C in July to 27°C/81°F in September. The low hovers around 13°C/55°F.

Low temp: 13°C / 55°F

High temp: 25°C / 77°F

Rainfall: 13mm / 0.5in

This a great time to travel. Peak season crowds have thinned out and the rates are lower. October is still dry. The short rains, which peak in December, revive the parched landscape and the migratory birds begin to arrive from the northern hemisphere.

The short rains start around November and last for roughly a month, with most rainfall occuring in December. It starts feeling quite humid toward the end of the year, with a high temperature of 29°C/84°F and an average low that ranges from 15°C/59°F in October to 17°C/63°F in December.

Rainfall: 71mm / 2.8in

Guest reviews

A home from home atmosphere which we loved. All the staff were very welcoming, warm, caring, and thoughtful. They couldn't do enough for us. Elizabeth & Victoria, thank you. The food was excellent. Our Guide, Augustino was tops! As his name suggests! Great! Thank you Augustino. I felt particularly sad to leave this camp, it felt warm and intimate. Thank you to all at Oliver's Camp and hope to see you soon.

Tripadvisor 1

Staying at Oliver’s was like being transported into a special universe. The camp is perched on a small hillside and each little bungalow is privately set for perfect sunset views and outdoor shower privacy. You’d never know anyone else was around. The lounge and pool are amazing.
We stayed at Oliver’s Camp during our Honeymoon and it was spectacular. The daily game drives were informative, interesting and comfortable. Our guide, Augustino, knew all the animals, sharing interesting facts, could track the animals so well, was super friendly and answered all of our questions. But the service didn’t stop at the drives. Back at camp, the staff was top notch as well. Elizabeth and Godlove were especially incredible, making us feel like family. No ask was too great and they were masters of customer service.

Tarangire National Park wildlife

Tarangire National Park is in northern Tanzania , just south of Lake Manyara . This is a protected area of colossal baobabs, grassy plains and huge herds of elephant. The park is one of the most underrated of Tanzania’s attractions, receiving just a fraction of the Serengeti’s visitors, which means more space and exclusivity for those who do make it to Tarangire.

As well as 300-strong herds of elephant, visitors will find big groups of buffalo and healthy populations of lion and leopard. During the dry season, Tarangire has the highest concentration of mammals in the country. There are wild dog and rare antelope such as gerenuk, plus more than 550 species of birds to spot throughout the year.

Tarangire is the ideal park for those who want to explore beyond game drives. Walk through the savannah to study the smallest creatures and learn about tracking animals. Soar through the sky in a hot-air balloon at dawn or head out on a night drive to find nocturnal wildlife.

This organic, light-footed camp hidden away in the park, is probably closer to our hearts' core than any other.

Tarangire country is big and bold: our camp is the opposite...a little gem. Full of heart and soul, and tucked into a grove of secluded riverside bush, it is so much at one with the wild that animals hardly look up as they do their thing around us. Elephants often pass right through camp, and we can be completely absorbed into their secret lives, from the sweet comfort of our sun-slatted living space.

Enhancing lives at Kuro

From enhancing dynamic careers to working with local communities and conservation projects, here are some inspiring stories from our award-winning camp in northern Serengeti.

Dentist outreach with Diana

Our dentist outreach programme visits schools to teach good oral hygiene as well as treat patients in the field. We recently visited three local schools in Tarangire screening over 400 students and 350 local people from surrounding communities. 640 people required immediate treatment bringing a lot of lovely smiles to Tarangire.

Life long learning & growth

Wildlife education

John from Tarangire

John is a young lad from a long line of subsistence farmers in the village of Mwikantsi, just to the west of Tarangire National Park. John was unable to continue his studies as his family simply could not afford the additional costs to finish high school. But as part of Nomad's wildlife education programme, John has been selected to join a prestigious wildlife management course in Moshi. We are super excited to see this programme begin, looking to support local talent from villages in areas known for human-wildlife conflict.

Chacha Makorere

Meet Chacha, who's an askari at Kuro and became a rifle carrying scout last year - a major milestone. He used to be a poacher living on the outskirts of the Serengeti, but joined our team and left his old ways behind. He also has a veggie garden that his wife runs when he's in camp - we supplied the seed, and he grows delicious fresh produce that we buy for guests and staff: lovely lettuces, herbs, root veggies and more green goodness than you can shake a stick at.

Anja is awesome!
Anja is awesome!! She went above and beyond for me as I had several changes until I locked in my bucket list itinerary and then my friend cancelled. She wasn't mad and just went about cancelling her portion which saved me money in the long run. Anja is a true professional regardless and I have been dealing with her since Sept 2023. Cannot wait until my trip in Sept 2024.

Shann was beyond amazing
Shann was beyond amazing. Listened to our needs, communicated super-efficiently and gave really honest excellent advice. She was so patient, kind and professional. The time difference across the globe made no difference. I am so excited for the itinerary she has put together. I usually cobble my own itinerary together for our holidays and it’s so time consuming and hard work. This was a piece of cake! Thank you Shann.
Great planning and service
Great planning and service, and everything worked like clockwork. We booked an Inyari Lodge safari with air with Safari.com. it wasn't clear if there will be 2 or three of us, so with Candis' help we booked a family chalet for 2 and added the third later when it was confirmed he can come. Candis put us on flights that maximized our game drive time (unlike some of the other guests) so we got all 6 drives in 3 nights. The lodge was great. Especially the game drives. We saw more than we hoped for. Additionally, Safari.com's insurance was very competitive. Highly recommended.

GUEST REVIEWS

Naona Moru showed us the most incredible hospitality we have ever experienced anywhere — bar none, full stop — making our four nights here a dream come true. We had the camp to ourselves for three of the four nights and every single person went the extra mile (or 10,000 miles!) to make us have the greatest honeymoon experience imaginable.

Stayed at camp for two nights and loved it the tents are spacious clean and comfortable the staff friendly and attentive and we made some great friends amongst them. The food was outstanding warm fresh bread rolls and the most amazing yoghurt desert. Just loved this place should have stayed longer. We left the tent flaps open and saw hackles in the bush of a night. Safe, friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend

We had a great two night stay at this camp, the staff were super friendly and the food was great. We spent early evening with a good glass of wine watching the wildlife go by whilst sitting by the fire pit, perfect! The tents were lovely, though the mattress was a little hard for my taste. Still everything else was pretty great and we would highly recommend a stay here.

We stayed at Naona Moru camp for 2 nights as part of a week-long safari. What a wonderful surprise when we drove up after a long day of game drive to this modern tented safari camp – simply suberb! The staff greeted us with hot towels and fresh juice. Our tent had 2 double beds and a large bathroom and the food was amazing. You also get free laundry service which was greatly needed after being on the dusty safari roads. This unique camp added so much to our experience!

We just stayed 2 nights at this camp. Out of the 10 tents we were the only ones there. We were pampered. The staff was very friendly & attentive. We were fed very well. Sitting around the fire pit in the evening was very enjoyable. If you are a lite sleeper this isn’t the place for you. Many animal noises heard through the night. Wildebeest migration through the camp in the middle of the night.

5 days  camping tanzania safari itinerary, day 1: arrival and tarangire national park.

Our 5 days camping Tanzania safari begins with the excitement of anticipation, as we arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where the spirit of adventure is palpable. After a warm welcome, we embark on a short journey to Tarangire National Park, renowned for its high density of elephants and baobab trees. As we set off on our first game drive, the vastness of the African savannah unfolds before us.

The park is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, with large herds of elephants gracefully moving across the landscape, and majestic baobabs standing sentinel over the plains. Tarangire is also home to buffaloes, lions, giraffes, and a variety of antelopes, each contributing to the rich tapestry of life here and make it to a fine destination for camping safaris in Tanzania. As the sun sets, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, we head to our campsite.

The first night of your Tanzania camping safari is spent under the stars, listening to the nocturnal symphony of the African bush. The campfire crackles as stories are shared, and the aroma of a freshly prepared dinner fills the air. With comfortable tents and warm sleeping bags, we settle in for a night of rest before the adventures that await us.

Day 2 & 3: Camping Tanzania Safari in The Endless Plains of Serengeti

With the break of dawn, we pack up camp and set out for the fabled Serengeti National Park, a name that resonates with the essence of the wild. The drive to Serengeti itself is an adventure, as we traverse diverse landscapes and observe the changing flora and fauna.

Upon arrival, we are greeted by the endless plains that have made Serengeti synonymous with camping safari. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to the Great Migration , where millions of wildebeest and zebras traverse its plains in search of fresh grazing. Even outside the migration period, the Serengeti teems with wildlife, including the ‘Big Five’ – lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinos.

We spend two days of this camping Tanzania safari exploring different regions of the park, each with its unique characteristics and wildlife. Our experienced guide ensures we are at the right place at the right time, maximizing our chances of witnessing unforgettable sights such as a pride of lions on the hunt or a solitary leopard lounging in a tree.

As night falls, we gather around the campfire once again. Our campsite in the Serengeti offers an authentic safari experience, with the sounds of the wild as our lullaby. Camping here is about being one with nature, and the thrill of sleeping in an unfenced area where animals roam free is exhilarating.

Day 4: Camping Tanzania Safari in Ngorongoro Crater

On the fourth day our camping Tanzania safari, we depart the Serengeti with cherished memories and head to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The centerpiece here is the Ngorongoro Crater, a vast volcanic caldera that serves as a natural enclosure for an extraordinary variety of wildlife.

As we descend the 600-meter high walls of the crater, a whole new world unveils itself. The Ngorongoro Crater is often referred to as ‘Africa’s Eden’ or ‘The Eighth Wonder of the World’. Its fertile floor is home to over 25,000 large mammals, including the endangered black rhino, the elusive cheetah, and large prides of lions.

The crater also boasts an impressive birdlife, with pink flamingos adorning the soda lake and birds of prey circling the skies. Game drives in this camping Tanzania safari here are rich with photographic opportunities and the chance to observe the intricate balance of this unique ecosystem.

As evening approaches, we continue with our camping Tanzania safari to the rim of the crater, where our campsite offers a stunning viewpoint. The high altitude brings cooler temperatures, and as we gather around the campfire, the crater floor below us is shrouded in mist, adding to the mystique of this ancient landscape.

Day 5: Departure- Camping Tanzania Safari

On final day of your camping Tanzania safari, we wake up to a crisp morning on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. After a hearty breakfast, we pack up and head back to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport, where our safari experience comes to a close.

Tarangire River Camp

“Tarangire River Camp is one exception to our policy of rarely recommending campgrounds outside of the park.” Families are welcome at Tarangire River Camp, which is also ideal for singles, couples, groups, and honeymooners. Amazing views of the sixth-largest national park in Africa, which includes its grasslands, wetlands, woods, and the lovely River Tarangire, may be seen from its high perch. An excellent starting point for exploring one of Africa’s national parks with the greatest diversity of species is Tarangire River Camp.

Location and Access:

The camp is accessed via road transfer from Kuro Airstrip, a journey lasting just over an hour.

Accommodations and facilities at Tarangire River Camp

The communal lodge is a traditional thatched, wood, and stone building that is elevated well above the ground. A set of stairs leads into an expansive open-plan dining and lounge room that is reminiscent of a traditional mess tent. The lounge has a large number of wood-framed, comfortable seats as well as various coffee tables. The color scheme is composed of earthy, neutral, and terracotta tones for a soothing effect. A few tables of various sizes are present in the eating area, all of which are surrounded by directors’ seats. A flight of stairs at the back of the lodge leads to a large deck with a fire pit in the center and a ring of seats and small tables around it. Here, visitors congregate to dine, drink, and swap safari tales! The terrace includes the pool as well, with plenty of sun loungers and furniture set up for outdoor eating. Obviously, the views from the terrace are stunning.

There are 21 tents available for guests at Tarangire River Camp, and each one is connected to the lodge by clearly marked walkways. Standard Safari Room, Deluxe Safari Room, and Family Safari Room are the available choices. They are all elevated above the ground on a wooden platform. Each style of room has a thatched roof, which is excellent for keeping cool, just like the lodge. A king bed or twin beds with mosquito nets are included in the standards, along with bedside tables and lamps, a baggage rack, a private terrace with chairs and a coffee table, and en-suite bathrooms with a toilet, sink, and shower.

There is just one deluxe room, and it is in a unique location next to an enormous ancient baobab tree with a beautiful view of the Tarangire River . The deluxe room has an extra-long king-size bed, all the normal accommodation amenities, and an outdoor shower and bath. It is ideal for honeymooners and anyone else looking for a special treat! The family rooms may accommodate a family of four or five because they either contain one king bed and two single beds or one king bed and three single beds. These also offer all of the standard option’s amenities. With a nice variety of colors and materials, each space is stylish and comfortable.

TARANGIRE RIVER CAMP ACTIVITIES:

Camp offers a wide range of possible activities. There is a lot of wildlife to view at the roughly 1,100-square-mile Tarangire National Park.

  • Visitors can spot lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, wild dogs, jackals, elephants, wildebeest, giraffes, zebras, reedbucks, waterbucks, hippos, rock hyraxes, and many other animals on game drives. There are a lot of elephants around, and you might even see a lion climbing a tree.
  • Over 500 kinds of birds have been identified, with ostriches, eagles, pelicans, and lovebirds among the highlights. Avian enthusiasts will be in their element.
  • All the animals congregate around water sources during the dry season, making them easier to identify, but the park is most attractive during the wet season.

Tarangire River Camp

  • The amazing staff of guides at Tarangire River Camp leads the safari excursions, and they have extensive knowledge of the park and are happy to answer any inquiries.

Due to the lack of fencing and the presence of wildlife, large, potentially deadly animals do occasionally pass through this property. If you decide to stay here, be cautious whenever you are roaming around the camp and ask a staff member to accompany you if you have any worries. After nightfall, every visitor is automatically guided.

ABOUT TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

The Mbali-Mbali Tarangire River Camp is situated in northern Tanzania’s Tarangire region. With an area of 2850 square kilometers, Tarangire is a sizable national park. It is located in the center of a massive conservation area that covers over 20,000 square kilometers and stretches past Lake Manyara to Lake Natron and the Kenyan border .

The fact that the reserve itself has a variety of dependable, year-round permanent water sources makes it essential to this ecosystem. The Tarangire River itself, which springs at the base of the surrounding rift escarpment, flows through the park, and eventually evaporates from its end at Lake Burungi on the reserve’s western edge, is the most prominent of them. The scenery is primarily composed of gently rolling hills covered in trees, with the occasional hill or kopje interspersed.

Many magnificent baobab trees, some of which are estimated to be older than 2000 years, can be seen in the park’s northern area. One noteworthy instance is the well-known Poacher’s Baobab, whose hollow trunk is said to have offered hunters cover up until the park was gazzeted. Since a local leopard can occasionally be discovered inside, let your guide enter first.

The Tarangire migration, which involves some 250,000 large creatures like giraffes, buffaloes, Oryx, ostriches, and lions, is the main natural attraction. Animals travel towards the Tarangire River during the dry season of June to November, where they assemble in large numbers. The potential for animal viewing is very high.

The creatures are harder to locate during the opposite green season, which lasts from December to May and causes them to scatter into the wide hinterland. Despite the fact that this inward and outward movement is typical across species, different animals typically move in various directions and at different times. Most wildebeest and zebras travel north, first to Lake Manyara and then to Lake Natron. Buffaloes, gazelles, elephants, kongoni, elands, and Oryx are among the animals that disperse onto the east and southeasterly plains. Moving more southerly are other herds of wildebeest, zebras, buffaloes, and elands.

The elephant population, estimated to presently number 5000–10,000 elephants , is the most important aspect of this migration. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, waterbucks, impalas, warthogs, dik-diks, giraffes, and smaller kudus are among the resident species that remain in the park all year.

The giant African pythons that hang out in the trees at Silale Swamps are one of the more uncommon animals that might be spotted here. Greater Kudus, fringe-eared Oryx, Bohor reedbucks, and Gerenuks can only be spotted in this area of the northern parks.

Tanzania Camping Safaris

Experience an Adventure Camping Safari and spend an exciting holiday in Tanzania’s great outdoors. This experience is perfect for those seeking to disengage from city life and connect to nature.

The distinctive call of the dove and weaver birds is your morning alarm. As you emerge from your tent into the breaking dawn landscape, the aroma of coffee fills the air. The vibrancy of nature at this time is particularly striking, with low golden light casting long shadows of trees over the camp.

A short time later, you set off on a morning game drive with our expert guides behind the wheel of an adapted 4×4. Stay alert for any movement or flash of colour, which may be a stalking leopard, a family of foraging mongooses or a giant Ground Hornbill in search of a snake-sized meal. The anticipation of what you may encounter is the thrill.

On our adventure camping safaris, you will venture deep into the wilds of Tanzania’s national parks. You will travel on rough, adventurous roads, pass tiny rural settlements, and see fascinating landscapes and abundant wildlife. At night, you stay in mostly unfenced campsites either insider or just outside the national parks.

All your senses will be involved. From experiencing the delicate balance between life and death whilst witnessing a chase and kill, to falling asleep to the call of a hooting owl or waking up to the sound of giggling hyenas. The safari experience is all the more intense as you are ‘right in the middle’ of it all. The nearness to nature, especially at night with millions of stars above, combined with an orchestra of nocturnal sounds, is an unforgettable experience.

On an adventure camping safari, you can leave the chores to us, relax, and experience every sight and sound. Our team will handle the setup and takedown of spacious canvas dome tents that accommodate two people. A safari cook will prepare delicious meals, which will be served on tables and chairs beneath a shaded tree.

When planning your experience, opt for a private safari to choose your itinerary, travel dates, and companions. Alternatively, join a scheduled group safari, limited to seven people, for an authentic safari experience at a reduced cost.

As a local operator, we continually strive to create exciting itineraries. With our vehicles, equipment, and teams, you can rest assured that you will have a unique and safe experience. Camping is to experience East Africa’s nature, animals, and cultures affordably.

What to expect on a camping safari in Tanzania?

Adventure Camping is an experiential opportunity to spend every hour of the day in nature without distractions from the modern world. It is a chance to appreciate the simplicity of life.

You will stay in public campsites inside the park or on the park’s boundary. The park campsites are mostly unfenced, and it is not unlikely that you may find elephants wandering between the tents or bump into antelopes on your way to the shower. In the ablution blocks, you will find flushing toilets and showers with cold water to cool yourself off from the afternoon heat.

Our Adventure Camping team includes a guide, a safari cook, and an assistant. They will go the extra mile so that you have a great safari. The camp and food will be set up and prepared for you to relax and enjoy your holiday. Our cooks will prepare all three daily meals, from early morning eggs and sausages, coffee, and bread, to a packed picnic lunch, snacks, and delicious dinners with stews and salads.

During the day, you will discover that our expert guides are not only passionate about nature, but they are also highly knowledgeable. Additionally, one of their greatest skills is enabling every group member to get the most out of the safari.

On private adventure camping safaris, you can choose where to go and what to see. If you provide one of our travel experts with your bucket list, they will be happy to help you plan every detail of your dream safari.

On our intimate group safaris, you will enjoy a safari with like-minded travellers at a reduced price. The group is limited to seven people, guaranteeing you a window seat in our specially adapted 4×4 Toyota Land Cruiser.

What will you see and do on a camping safari in Tanzania

Adventure Camping is an experiential safari. Sitting by the crackling fire, deep discussions are shared, bonding your relationships. The roar of a lion in the distance seems closer than it actually is. As you lean back to gaze at the dark sky, free from light pollution, thousands of stars sparkle above. This unforgettable moment gives you an insight into the grandeur of the universe. Thankfully, there are numerous Tanzania parks to experience this sensation.

The Northern Circuit

Tarangire National Park is known for its baobab trees and winding river, which attracts a wide variety of wildlife during the dry season. You’ll have the chance to see predators and prey alike, including one of Tanzania’s largest elephant populations.

At the Ngorongoro Conservation Area , you’ll find the world’s largest caldera, home to an array of wildlife. There is a good chance that you’ll get to see the Big Five while you’re here, and the landscape itself is stunning, with forests, lakes, and savannahs to explore. A true highlight on a Tanzania camping safari.

The Serengeti National Park is a remarkable park and home to the annual wildebeest migration. The wide-open savannahs with islands of rocky Kopjes are so vast in size that it could take a lifetime to explore this beautiful park fully. Best of all, visitors can enjoy world-class game-watching throughout the year.

The Southern Circuit

Mikumi National Park is often called the Serengeti of the south due to its open plains and acacia trees. You can see four of the Big Five animals, except for the Black Rhino. You can also hike to Sinole Falls in the northern Uluguru Mountains.

Further south, the Ruaha National Park and Nyerere National Park/Selous Game Reserve have been described as some of Africa’s last remaining wildernesses. Here, you can enjoy an unforgettable walking or boat safari. These wild parks offer a true adventure, and the campsites are less frequented.

You will return from your Tanzania camping safari with sun-kissed skin, dust in your hair, new and old relationships formed, and plenty of stories to share. This magical experience leaves you with an acute understanding of the saying, “You can leave Africa, but Africa will never leave you.”

“Everything about our interaction with Tanzania-Experience was ‘attention to detail.’ From our first discussions with the sales team through until the final hours of our safari, every care was taken to ensure we were well informed and well taken care of. (...) There is no doubt without the professionalism and detailed local knowledge of the Tanzania-Experience team, our adventure would have been very different."

We asked a few tour operators and have some quotes with different itineraries, but we haven't never been there so it's hard to choose.

From what we understand, the must do parks are Masai Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

The other parks they suggested are Samburu, Lake Nakuru, Ol Pajeta, Amboseli, Tarangire and Lake Manyara. (obviously we can't visit all of them, so we need to pick which ones.)

Do you have any suggestions on which ones to pick, or an example of full itinerary (we start from Nairobi and end in Nairobi)? We want to focus on seeing the most variety of animals and nature, doing some hikes, and visit a village or two.
