Explore the Natural Beauty and Rich Heritage of Italy on vespa

Italy’s history dates back thousands of years, even beyond the times when Phoenicians, Greeks, Celts, Etruscans, and ancient Italic tribes inhabited the land. Since then, Italy has given rise to the Roman Empire, the Renaissance, and other cultural influences that have shaped Western society. Today, Italy is renowned for its cuisine, fashion, wines, and more. It is home to some of the best manufacturers and master craftsmen, from espresso machines, cars, motorcycles, and even scooters, to leather goods, clothing, and other products!

More about Italy vespa tours

Cruise city streets and open countryside on a quintessential classic.

The variety of geography and culture are reason enough to visit, but make a road trip in Italy a fantastic way to see the country. There is gorgeous coastline, towering mountain ranges, gently rolling countryside, magnificent lakes, and more natural beauty throughout the country. What better way to travel Italian style and immerse yourself in these lands, than by cruising around on a classic Italian scooter? While the varied geography can lead to a number of different climates and variations in weather, generally, March to November is a good time for Italy Vespa tours.

The possibilities for things to see and do are endless, with fascinating destinations throughout Italy. UNESCO World Heritage Sites abound, and you can explore Roman ruins, see the faint history of Etruscan villages, marvel at the paintings and sculptures of the Renaissance masters, or simply enjoy the amazing wines and cuisine. Italy is one of the world’s top producers of wine, with multiple protected denominations of origin. You’ll never tire of the food either, as every individual region, and even individual cities, have their own specialties and staples!

Getting into Italy will be extremely simple for most visitors. You’ll likely arrive in Rome or Milan for intercontinental travel, but several cities, like Bologna, Naples, Palermo, Pisa, and Genoa offer shorter range international flights. Since Italy has membership in the European Union, and is part of the Schengen Agreement, entry requirements for citizens of other member nations requires nothing more than a valid passport with at least six months of validity remaining. If you happen to be coming from some other country, make sure to double check the visa requirements! While airports are typically the easiest points of entry, arriving by train, bus, car, or even ferry will not present any major difficulties, and all make for excellent ways to get around Italy once you’ve arrived.

What Planet Ride offers for Vespa adventures in Italy

Planet Ride features a number of scooter tours throughout Italy, and the only acceptable make for them all is a Vespa! The company was born over 70 years ago in Rome, with the first model unveiled to the public in 1946. Since then, Vespa has gained a cult following around the world, and will always be Italy’s scooter! It makes for the perfect way to travel Italian style while visiting.

Again, we feature a variety of Italy Vespa tours and the number is constantly growing. Your options for a scooter road trip in Italy cover most of the country. Some offer 100% freedom, where you will head out on your Vespa to explore the route on your own, while others will let you choose a group and follow your expert local guide. Below are a few examples to get you fired up!

In the north, you can spend four days exploring the region between Venice and Milan, including the magnificent Lake Garda. Over the course of those four days, you’ll make a series of fun and relaxing day trips to the south of Lake Garda, cruising the northern reaches of the lake, then to the city of Verona (home to Shakespeare’s story of Romeo and Juliet), and finally to the famed Valpolicella wine country. You’ll have plenty of time and freedom to stop along the way and explore quaint local villages, taste delicious local products (like wine and olive oil), and take in the gorgeous scenery.

The central parts of Italy – Umbria and Tuscany – feature several different options for a Vespa road trip. On the San Gimignano tour, you’ll explore UNESCO World Heritage Sites, wander the narrow streets of San Gimignano and nearby towns, taste local sheep’s milk cheeses, and much more. One day you’ll head to Monteriggioni, an intact and still inhabited medieval village encircled by walls and towers, and on the next, you’ll explore the culinary delights (wine, olive oil, and bread) of the town of Montespertoli. Finally, no Tuscany trip would be complete without a stop in the famous wine region of Chianti! Here you’ll sip some of the world’s best wine before cruising back to the hotel on your trusty Vespa.

Finally, one of our Italy Vespa tours in the south of the country let you experience another unique region – Puglia. The olive groves, rocky canyons, and coastline make for gorgeous views that never seem to end! After arriving, you’ll make your way to the hotel in the whitewashed town of Alberobello, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its history and unique architecture. With Alberobello as your home base, you’ll venture into the Valley of Istria. On the following day, head for the coast while exploring charming villages and fascinating archeological sites. The remaining days will be spent exploring Puglia’s natural wonders, like the Castellana Caves and the wines and cheeses of Gioia del Colle.

No matter what your interests may be, from a simple Italy Vespa rental, to a multi-day road trip, Planet Ride features a tour or local travel partner that is sure to meet your needs!

The Best Places in Italy to Explore by Scooter

I taly’s varied landscape lends itself perfectly to exploration by scooter, or a Vespa if you really want to look like an Italian local. Its hairpin coastal roads, gentle hills, and mountain passes are best appreciated on two wheels, not stuck inside a car, and scooter riding gives you the freedom to stop off spontaneously along the way. Here are some itineraries from around the country that take you over mountain ranges in the Alps, around rocky coastlines in Puglia, and through rolling, verdant landscapes in Tuscany. And being Italy, there’s always a curious hilltop village, local restaurant , or country villa for pit stops on the way.

1. Salento, Puglia

scooter tour in italy

Photo: mjols84 /Shutterstock

At the very base of the stiletto heel of Italy’s boot lies the area of Salento. Its coastal roads can make for a three- to four-day trip, allowing plenty of time for exploring sea caves and eating fresh seafood. Start from San Cataldo on the east and head south down the eastern coastline. This side of Salento’s coast is characterized by dramatic cliffs, rock formations, and grottoes. Stop at Grotta della Poesia, a natural swimming pool formed by erosion, and Sant’Andrea with its monumental rock formations and sea arches. Continue down to the most southern point of Puglia, Santa Maria di Leuca, and then back up the west coast, which is dotted with sandy beaches like Le Maldive di Salento. Finish in Gallipoli, a town protruding out into the sea, and make sure you try the local specialty — raw red prawns of Gallipoli.

2. Amalfi Coast, Campania

scooter tour in italy

Photo: IgorZh /Shutterstock

Unlike the Salento coastline, this route is not for the inexperienced rider or anyone with vertigo. This stretch of road along the beautiful Amalfi Coast is an exhilarating combination of hairpin bends, dizzying views down to tiny sailing boats far below, and battles with local buses that careen along at terrifying speeds. Start in the town of Positano. Admire the bougainvillea bedecked streets, but if it’s high tourist season, don’t stay too long. Carry on to Furore, a village of a few houses and vineyards on terraces rising vertically up from a fjord, and on to Conca dei Marini, a village surrounded by lemon groves with a sort of natural terrace that overlooks the sea. Amalfi, once one of the Four Maritime Republics of Italy, is very attractive but also very busy. Pause in Ravello, instead, to enjoy the Villa Rufolo gardens and finish in Vietri sul Mare, the heart of the Amalfi coast production of bright, artistic ceramics and home to the Museum of Ceramics.

3. Southern Tuscany

scooter tour in italy

Photo: Shebeko /Shutterstock

When it comes to Italy’s most popular tourist region, Tuscany, it is almost a prerequisite that you go around by scooter or motorbike. A car just feels cumbersome. With lots of small roads and tracks through the countryside, you can avoid traffic and go scenic. The southern area of Tuscany provides several days’ worth of natural and man-made attractions to pepper your days of riding. There are three natural hot springs here. Saturnia features white terraces of iridescent blue pools while Bagni di San Filippo has dramatic white cliffs of built-up calcium deposits. Bagno Vignoni is a town whose main piazza is actually a large rectangular pool of thermal water. Visit the hilltop towns of Montepulciano, for excellent wine and leather goods, and Pitigliano, whose houses built on a rocky outcrop sit above a network of underground caves.

4. Stelvio Pass, South Tyrol

scooter tour in italy

Photo: Andrew Mayovskyy /Shutterstock

Focusing more on the experience of driving itself, the Stelvio Pass, or SS38, connecting Bormio to South Tyrol is known as one of the greatest driving roads in Europe . Its series of electrifying bends that zig-zag mercilessly down the southern side, or as Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson puts it , “15 miles of asphalt spaghetti draped on an Alp,” is one of the most famous images of the road, though the other side of the pass is often preferred by motorcyclists as it’s less crowded with cyclists and tourists. Be careful of another kind of traffic, though, in the form of mountain goats. If you take your eyes off the road for a second (that’s all you get), you’ll see thrilling drops over the side and sheer rugged mountains above. At the top, there is a viewpoint and a stand selling sausages, an essential part of the Stelvio experience.

5. Le Langhe, Piemonte

scooter tour in italy

Photo: StevanZZ /Shutterstock

Still in the north, but to the extreme west, the Langhe area of the Piemonte region is usually highlighted for its gastronomic merits, as it is the land of white truffles and hard-hitting wines like Barolo and Barbaresco. But it is also crisscrossed with well-tarmacked, meandering roads that wind through verdant vineyards carpeting the hills. The landscape has been given UNESCO World Heritage status for the preservation of its winemaking culture, described as “an archetype of European vineyards .” A slow ride through this artistically cultivated landscape passes towns like Alba, the home of the truffle, and Neive, voted one of the “most beautiful villages in Italy.”

6. Riviera del Brenta, Veneto

scooter tour in italy

Photo: travelview /Shutterstock

For a short day trip, instead, bikers can look to the Riviera del Brenta in the Veneto region. The River Brenta connects Venice on the sea with the city of Padua inland. Along the stretch of river are a dozen elegant villas that were the country houses of various Venetian nobility. A pleasant day can be had pottering along the road following the river and stopping at some of these prestigious houses. The most famous is probably Villa Pisani at Stra. It boasts 114 rooms, the largest of which features a ceiling by 18th-century painter Tiepolo. It has spectacular gardens with a maze, and it was once owned by Napoleon for a while.

The home town of the famous "Medici" family is a museum in itself, and in the beautiful and lively historic city center there are many attractions that you should visit. The dome was built in the 14th century and is the most prominent sight in the city. For art lovers, the "Uffizi" gallery is the most important paintings museum worldwide, a mandatory stop. Another important historic building is the Ponte Vecchio with the Vasari corridor, the old bridge that crosses the river Arno joining the Palazzo Vecchio with the Pitti Palace.

Mugello racetrack

scooter tour in italy

The race-crazy Italians have conducted car races in the Mugello area since the 1920s. However, due to safety concerns, the last race on regular roads took place in 1970. The current Mugello circuit was first opened in 1974. The track is regularly used by Ferrari to test their cars, including the Formula 1 race cars, but the main event in Mugello is the Moto GP race. The first race was held in 1976 and the winners' list includes Mick Doohan, Max Biaggi, and – seven times – Valentino Rossi. The fastest motorcycle lap time was set by Fabio Quartararo in 2021: 1:45,187

Passo del Muraglione

scooter tour in italy

This 80 km mountain road was definitely built by a passionate motorcyclist. It is one big roller coaster! The pass divides Tuscany and Emilia Romagna and was once a mountain race track. the cafe at the top of the pass is a well-known motorcycle hangout in the region, even the Ducati engineers come here from time to time for testing.

Passo della Consuma (1057 m)

scooter tour in italy

The 25 kilometers of road over the Passo della Consuma is one of the best things that can happen to a motorcyclist in Tuscany. Countless curves, well-maintained asphalt, little traffic - no wonder that this pass attracts many two-wheelers on weekends, and not only those with engines. The pass is over 1000 m high, so it may well get a bit chilly!

The Piazza Grande in Arezzo is surrounded by medieval houses with crenelated towers, the Romanesque apse of Santa Maria della Pieve church, Gothic and Renaissance palaces. The knights, dressed in medieval attire take part in the annual "Giostra del Saracino", a journey in time. Today, Arezzo is famous for its gold manufacturing, more than 10 tons of gold are used every month. Roberto Benigni filmed many scenes of his Oscar-winning film "Life is Beautiful".

The Gothic metropolis of Tuscany. It is the city of the 17 contrade, the districts that compete in the Palio, the famous horse race. City of palaces, banks, fountains, and churches on the surrounding hills. The most beautiful square in Italy, the Campo, the Town Hall, the Palazzo Pubblico, the tower Torre della Mangia, the impressive Cathedral of Santa Maria, all this and much more Siena offers the visitor.

Greve in Chianti

scooter tour in italy

The picturesque little town in the middle of the wine country owes its fame to two peculiarities: the "Macelleria Falorni", which has been producing its famous ham since 1729, and the town's most famous son, Giovanni da Verrazzano. Verrazzano discovered New York harbor. The Verrazzano Narrow Bridge, which connects Staten Island with Brooklyn and whose name is burned into the soul of every runner who has ever participated in the New York Marathon, was named after him.

San Gimignano

scooter tour in italy

Due to a lack of Ferraris, Rolex, and Gucci the rich and important families who ruled the region in the past needed to find their way to outdo each other. They came up with building higher towers than their neighbors. Around 1500 there were more than 72 examples of this picturesque nonsense. Today there are only 14 left but the result is still a must-see tourist attraction nicknamed “Manhattan of the Middle Ages” for its skyline.

Tuscany by Scooter 2TU

A scooter tour in tuscany with plenty of time to experience the enviable italian lifestyle..

Savor a full week of Tuscany – on a Vespa! From our home base, the incomparable city of Florence, we ride our scooters to a different destination with new highlights every day. Our first tour takes us to the small medieval hill town of San Gimignano, aka the “Medieval Manhattan”. Day two is a gentle cruise across the hills of one of the world's most famous wine regions, Chianti. In Siena you‘ll learn all about the Palio di Siena, with enough time to discover the town and enjoy a cappuccino on the Piazza del Campo. Next destination is Arezzo, once one of the most powerful Etruscan towns and nowadays the center of the Italian jewelry industry. We also venture to the North of Florence, to Mugello with its famous MotoGP race track, but the region has much more to offer. The roads here are made for biking and scootering, and that’s exactly what we do. On the last riding day you can choose: Visit the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa by train or join us on a beautiful scooter ride to the Arno valley, a cooking class as well a an olive oil tasting can be visited. Hit the open road on this guided tour of Puglia (“Apulia” for the Brits), southern Italy’s hottest tourist destination.  Your guide will lead you along quiet backroads amongst olive groves and vineyards to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Alberobello, where we spend two nights. Alberobello is famous for its conically shaped “trullo” houses, which are unique to the region and impart a fairytale feeling to the landscape. Our last two days are in the fantastic city of Matera, also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Matera is cut in two by a spectacular ravine, creating cliffs that have been inhabited since prehistoric times. During the last thousand years, the locals excavated their houses, chapels, and shops from the soft tufa rock. The result is a fascinating and spectacular honeycomb of cave-hewn buildings.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Italy without great food and wine. Puglia is home to some of Italy’s most wonderful cuisine. Fresh seafood abounds as well as opulent arrays of antipasti offer roasted artichokes, delicious ricotta, savory vegetable pies, and the deliciously creamy  burrata  cheese.  What’s more, indigenous grapes such as Primitivo, Negroamarro, and Aglianico are being transformed by state-of-the-art wine-making techniques into elegant yet powerful wines that many now consider to be among the best in Italy.

Independent arrival in Bari and check into a four-star boutique hotel which is centrally located and less than a ten-minute walk from the colorful and atmospheric old Bari where cafés, wine bars, and trattorias line the labyrinthine medieval streets. Not to be missed is the remarkable Romanesque architecture of the 12th-century Basilica di San Nicola. Dine independently tonight in one of the many local restaurants. Overnight Bari. Hotel included. Dinner not included. Overnight Bari. Hotel included. Dinner not included.

Meet your guide this morning at 9:00 in the hotel lobby and transfer by van to Polignano Mare, where our Vespa will be waiting. Perched atop a 20 metre-high limestone cliff above the shimmering waters of the Adriatic, Polignano a Mare is a stunningly beautiful starting point for our Vespa tour.  We'll do a practice ride in a parking lot to make sure everyone is  comfortable before heading out to explore the countryside. We gradually climb up to a vantage point for a view over a sea of olive  trees that seem to wash up against the Adriatic. We take a side road to avoid traffic and ride to Monopoli’s imposing  16th century fortifications. Explore Monopoli by foot and then enjoy a lovely lunch at a local trattoria. Then hop back  on your scooter and follow the coast road before climbing up to the hills. On the way you'll pass whitewashed masserie, the imposing fortified manor houses that are the legacy of centuries of danger when corsair  pirates raided the coast. We stop in Alberobello for a guided visit of the famous Trulli Zone with a local guide then  escape the crowds and ride to the lovely small town of Locorotondo. Your accommodation for the next two nights is  the lovely Masseria Grofoleo, a lovingly restored 18th Century “Manor House” that is an oasis of calm located in the countryside on the immediate outskirts of Locorotondo. We take over the whole complex and have a special dinner catered for us at the masseria. Your bags are delivered by van. Overnight Locorotondo. Hotel, breakfast and dinner included.

Today begins with an hour's ride past a vast sea of olive groves to the Masseria Brancati, one of the oldest olive oil  farms in Puglia. Tour the historic masseria, which dates back to the Middle Ages, and then learn all about how this  precious oil is produced. From there we have a short ride to another spectacular hilltop town, Ostuni, where you  have time to explore on foot and stop for lunch. This afternoon we ride to the Baroque gem of Martina Franca to  have a look at its stunning architecture before heading on to a short wine tasting just a few minutes from our home  back in Locorotondo. Meet up again this evening for yet another delicious meal of local specialties. Overnight Locorotondo. Hotel, breakfast and dinner included.

Head southwest this morning through vineyards and orchards to the village of Gioia del Colle, where we stop for a  coffee break and a visit to the imposing Swabian (yes, Swabian!) medieval castle. Then we have another hour’s ride to  lunch at the edge of Matera in an ancient sheep corral. After lunch, it's a short ride from there to amazing Matera,  where we have a visit with a local guide who will tell us all about the region’s Christian and pagan past. Visit centuries’- old frescoed rock chapels and monasteries, as well as some of the previously inhabited cave-houses. Matera is another  UNESCO World Heritage site and is truly an unforgettable place. Up until the late 1950’s, many of Matera’s inhabitants  lived in stone dwellings partially excavated from the rockface of the two steep ravines that slice through the city. The  “Sassi” fell into ruin in the 1960s when the city moved these “cave dwellers” into new government housing.  Fortunately for us, however, the people from Matera began restoring the ancient village a decade ago and it is now a  truly unique place. Our hotel for the next two nights, the four-star Corte San Pietro  (or similar), is a chic and modern reinterpretation on Matera’s traditional “Sassi” houses. Enjoy an aperitivo on the hotel terrace and watch the last rays  of the sun play on the opposite wall of the gorge before walking to dinner. Overnight Matera. Hotel, breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Today’s ride takes us into the heart of the province of Basilicata, one of Italy’s most beautiful and least populated regions. Our route takes as across wide open plains to perched hilltop villages. You will get a glimpse of authentic Italy as we explore the rustic villages of Montescaglioso and its ancient Benedictine Abbey before stopping at a farm that produces their own sun-dried tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants which they preserve “sott'olio”. We enjoy a superb light lunch which of course features farm to table products. Bring your swimsuits, because they have a lovely pool which we can enjoy before returning to Matera. You have free time before one last fantastic dinner. Overnight Matera. Hotel, breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Enjoy a relaxed morning as our final transfer to the Bari train station departs at 11:00 to connect with trains for Rome (13:14) and afternoon flights. Earlier departures are possible but at your own expense. Breakfast and one group transfer to train station included.

Please note: According to the departure date of your tour some details of the itinerary may change. This is because we make discoveries whenever we run a tour. Sometimes they are good, like a wonderful new wine bar that we want to take you to, and sometimes bad, like a road has been washed away. We, therefore, sometimes change our itinerary to improve it by adding something new or substituting something that is no longer up to our standards.  We always aim to provide you with the best possible experience because we want you to come back for another tour! We will let you know before departure of any changes to the original itinerary.

Note on Itinerary : Although we do our best to adhere to the schedule listed above, this itinerary is subject to change for numerous reasons beyond our control, such as the weather

Booking : e-mail us at [email protected] to receive a booking contract (or use the 'Contact Us' link at the top of this page), or click on the 'Book Now' button to the right.

Insurance : We highly recommend the purchase of Trip Insurance. We recommend “Travel Guard” to our North American clients, just click on the logo below.  Australian, New Zealander, and British travelers, please consult your insurance brokers.

We look forward to having you join us for the trip of a lifetime!

We will be riding about 100 kms a day, at least, therefore you need to be a good rider. We aim to break up the rides so that we do not ride more than 45 minutes in one stretch.

Previous experience driving a scooter or motorbike is essential. You must arrive at the start of the trip already a competent rider, otherwise the risk of injury and hospitalization is too great. If you have not ridden a scooter before then you should take lessons or rent a scooter locally and learn how to ride it before coming on the trip.

Physical activity is limited to walking in the towns and villages.

Getting There : the trip starts in Bari on Day 1 at our pre-booked hotel. You can arrive by train or plane.

Air : Bari Airport (see link at the bottom of this page) is well connected with other Italian cities and there are some flights from European hubs such as London. It is a 25-minute taxi ride from the airport to our hotel in Bari (about € 25). London, Milan, and Rome have multiple airports (one serving more international flights and the other domestic), so be careful when purchasing transfer flights on different companies!

Rail : There are several trains a day to Bari from the major Italian cities (for timetables please see the link below to the Italian railway website). Travel time from Rome and Milan by Eurostar train is about 5 hours and 8 hours respectively. The hotel is a 5-minute cab ride from the train station (a taxi is advised), and should cost no more than €15. See our section on Italian trains below for more information.

Getting Away at the End of the Trip : the trip ends in Bari for afternoon trains to Rome (either at 13:14 or 18:17). If you choose to leave earlier from Matera for the Bari airport or train station, we can arrange transport for you (at your expense, about €120).

If you book a trip with us you will receive detailed information about how to get to the start of your trip, or feel free to e-mail us with any specific travel questions.

This was a great tour (as always). Marco is a great guide - providing wonderful insight into the history and the culture of Puglia. The riding was fun, the views were spectacular, and the food was wonderful. Our only question now is which ScooteraBella tour we want to do next.

Our tour of Puglia and Basilicata was everything we’d hoped for, and more. The routes and destinations were expertly planned and led by our affable guide, Marco. We loved our time on the Vespa scooters, riding through Adriatic breezes in Monopoli, quiet olive tree groves around Martina Franca, and mountainous heights to Montescaglioso. We loved our time off the scooters, too, enjoying delicious meals, informative local tours, and leisurely exploration of castles, cathedrals, and musea. Somehow Marco timed everything perfectly, so that the balance of riding and sightseeing was just right. We can't wait to take another tour next season.

A scooter is the perfect way to explore Puglia and Basilicata. Especially when you are in the hands of such knowledgable and fun guides. This was the first tour we did with Brett and Sara - and we have now done three! They make everything fun. Just the right pace, flexible, relaxed and just the best restaurants and hotels. We look forward to our next (4th) tour with our friends at Scooterbella.

This was the first group tour we have done and it proved to be a huge success for us. The scooters were a perfect way to see a little bit of Italy, having said that we felt we saw it all. The food and wine was great and every place we visited was well thought out. Brett and Sara were excellent guides, making sure we were well looked after. We enjoyed Our scooterbella experience so much we booked two years later for a similar experience on the Croatia scooter tour.

My husband and I are independent travelers and don't typically take tours. But we loved this trip led by Brett & Sara. It felt like we were just out scootering each day with our friends. We went on backroads we never could have found on our own. We lunched at an olive farm and another day an organic tomato / sun dried tomato farm. We visited small towns and UNESCO World Heritage sites along the beautiful Adriatic. Brett and Sara go the extra mile to make this a unique and wonderful experience.

If you have any questions or specific requests about any of our tours, we’re here to help. You can fill in the form below, send us an email, or call us and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

My husband and I booked the Ape Calessino tour for our first day in Rome. Our tour guide, Alessio, picked us up from our hotel with a huge smile on his face, fit us with helmets, and we were off on our AMAZING adventure! Alessio was entertaining, very personable, and extremely knowledgeable about the city. With his guidance, we saw landmarks we were expecting to see while also learning facts and being introduced to beautiful parts of the city we would have never experienced on our own. Our tour also included a break for delicious gelato and several scenic stops for photos. By the time our 3-hour tour was over, we felt like he was family, and we had known him forever. 10 days later - round TWO! We enjoyed our first trip with Alessio so much that we booked another tour to pick up where we left off. We had the same wonderful experience the second time and got to see and learn more surprising facts about Rome while zipping through the streets in our Ape Calessino. So, FUN - People point at you with a smile as you zip by them on the Ape Calessino!! Again, we stopped for photos and enjoyed a cocktail and a delicious snack. Everything was PERFECT! By the time we finished our second tour, we felt like "insiders" and knew we had made the right decision to do it again. If you are looking for a unique experience in Rome - THIS IS IT!!!

We had a very boring 4 hr Classic tour on a Sunday afternoon with Ricky and Lorenzo. It was definitely not the picture-perfect Roman holiday tour we were expecting for 400 euros and 4% credit card fee!! Our tour included lengthy stops inside Ricky's favorite church, another lengthy stop at ancient Roman thermal springs where we got eaten alive by mosquitos and attacked by flies, and a drive through Ricky's childhood neighborhood where we stopped for a gelato in a suburban (boring) area. We tried to provide feedback halfway through our tour and told Ricky we wanted to go to places with nice views. He assured us that would come later in our tour but in viewing pics posted by others, it's clear we didn't make the same stops. Very disappointed that we paid so much money for a dud of a tour. Date of experience: October 2022

Ciao Julie! Thank you so much for providing your feedback about your experience. I am so sorry to hear your Scooteroma tour didn't meet your expectations. We do our best to customize the tour to our client's personalities and wishes. It appears Ricky missed the mark - we apologize! I spoke with Ricky and we will 100% learn from your feedback and only get better as a Squad. Once again, thank you for riding with us! Best wishes, Annie

We used Scooteroma and Personized Italy Tours ( https://personalizeditaly.com) in July 2022 and it was the BEST way to see the city, especially with teenagers and the hot weather. Highlight of 3 weeks in Europe! Amazing tour guides, fun AND educational. Bonus? They stopped for wonderful treats and photo stops along the beautiful landmarks and sites. A MUST if you are in Rome.

Buongiorno Alexandra! We are so thrilled you loved all the experiences are team led for your family. So happy we could be a highlight of your European Holiday! Once again, many thanks for choosing us. All the best, Annie

Scooteroma was SUPERB! Our Vespa private tour was probably the highlight of our two week Italian vacation so I highly recommend it. Scooteroma even helped us with a private tour of Pompeii! Both our guides were professional and very knowledgeable so you are in good hands.

Quick stop at Aventine Hill for photos and rest.

BEST SCOOTER TOUR EVER!!! We heard about Annie & her company from a friend of ours. Scooteroma came highly recommended across the board...and they exceeded every expectation!!! Simone & Ricardo (sorry, I hope I spelled that correctly) were a dream as our tour guides! We couldn't have asked for a better experience in Rome. We saved our scooter tour for our last full day in Italy (best idea we had all month lol). As tourists, you've likely already checked off all the big "to-do's" on your list by day 4. The tour showed us the Rome we HADN'T yet seen--it was so refreshing & beautiful! Being able to appreciate the true city; sans 500-person Colosseum lines, overwhelming human traffic in front of the Trevi Fountain & the Pantheon, etc. was PRICELESS!! We will absolutely be scooting with them again on our next Roma trip! Grazie mille, Annie, Giovanni, Simone, & Ricardo!!!

Ciao Noel! Sooooo wonderful to read your insight into your Scooteroma experience! I am thrilled to hear you enjoyed your ride with Simone & Riccardo. That's music to my ears! We look forward to welcoming you back to Rome for another ride! Til then... take care! Best wishes, Annie, Giovanni & the Scooteroma Squad

This was the best way to see Roma! Our guides Riccardo (Little Ricky) & Kris we're wonderful! Always explaining to us where we were and what we were seeing. We did the Double Street tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. If we're ever in Rome again, we will definitely take another tour! Thank you again!!

When we booked our scooter tour in Rome we were a little unsure if we would enjoy this experience or not. After the scooter tour we were SO glad we did it because we had a great time on our tour! We did the Street Art Vespa Tour with Michele "Mike" as our tour guide and it was so fun. Cruising around Rome on the Vespa and seeing some beautiful street art was the highlight of our trip to Rome. We are already discussing when we should go back to Rome to take another Scooteroma tour!

This was hands-down the best decision I made about our trip to Italy! Annie and Giovanni were terrific. Giovanni was my contact before our trip - he was responsive, helpful, and patient. Annie and Cristiano were our two drivers and they were AMAZING. I brought my 14-year old daughter to Italy last month and this was her favorite part of our trip (and we did a lot of cool stuff). I like to know the lay-of-the-land when I visit a new place and this was the perfect way to see the city -- an up close, personal, guided tour on our first afternoon. My daughter and I both felt completely safe on the backs of their Vespas, scooting along the streets past incredible sites that we were going to see later that week. Annie + Cristiano made it very personalized, taking us to see specific places that were interesting / important to us (e.g. street art, Jewish Ghetto), in addition to all the main tourist sites (e.g. Coloseo). We stopped every 15 mins or so to take a break and hear all about the area around us. My biggest concern was how the rest of our trip would possibly compare to this fantastic experience on the very first afternoon we were there. I have to add that Annie was a wonderful resource -- recommending other places for us to see during the rest of our stay, restaurants to go to, the best gelato places, neighborhoods to visit. She and Cristiano actually marked up our map of Rome with all of their ideas and suggestions, tailoring it to what they knew about us and our interests. Later on, we visited all the main sites they'd shown us (e.g. Vatican, Colloseum, Roman Forum, etc.) and in every tour group when we heard about certain things, we thought, "Oh yeah - we saw that!" or "Right - we were there and heard all about that". What we'd learned from Annie + Cristiano was consistently more in-depth than what we heard from the guides INSIDE the actual sites we'd driven past. I recommended Scooterama to everyone we met. Best best money I've ever spent on a trip and they deserved every penny.

Ciao Sharon, We absolutely LOVED scootering with you and Annie! It was so much fun and so lovely to meet people like yourselves. It was absolutely Cristiano and my pleasure to show you Roma from the back of our Vespas and to give you our favorite places to eat and drink in town. Wishing you both all the best and hope to see you once again in Brooklyn or back here in Roma! Best wishes, Annie, Giovanni & the Squad

Mike was SUPER awesome as a tour guide. We chose the Scooteroma Shuffle for our tour and it was everything we wanted it to be. We didn't die driving through Rome, thankfully. Mike not only showed us interesting street art and the history behind the art. He also took us to a street food place that was delicious and later a gelato place that will always have a special place in my heart. Mike offered to take photos of us, which was AWESOME, since selfies are only so cool. Finally, Mike gave us a map that listed all the places we went with names, AND he made suggestions for places that were in the area of our AirBnB. PS. I think we'd be besties with Mike if we lived in Rome!

Jun 11, 2019

Buongiorno from Roma, Megan! Thank you for the off the charts score! We so appreciate your detailed review. We are thrilled you could experience Rome from the back of our Vespa and felt safe while doing it. So happy to hear you enjoyed the spin through the city with Mike & co. We agree they are the best guys in town and those wheels.... swoon! Once again, many thanks for riding with us! Best wishes, Annie, Giovanni & the Scooteroma squad

An easy two-wheels itinerary to get around Capri

Last Updated on July 28, 2023 by

scooter tour in italy

Nothing screams la dolce vita more than touring Italy by Vespa, and Capri is surely the most iconic place to experience this. Bathed by the crystalline waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea and located just 30 minutes away from the Amalfi Coast, Capri is one of the must-visit spots in Campania. This one or two-day itinerary of Capri on a scooter will show you how to visit all the popular places on the island and have a great time.

Table of Contents

How long time should I spend in Capri?

View of the bay of Naples from the Piazzetta of Capri - Capri scooter itinerary

Together with Procida and Ischia, Capri is one of the easiest islands to visit for a day trip from Naples, Sorrento, or the Amalfi Coast . If you have enough time, two days are perfect to explore and check off every single sight on the island. Nevertheless, even a one-day visit to Capri provides a glimpse into the island’s vibrant resort life, allowing you to visit popular sights, indulge in leisure activities, and even take a refreshing swim in the pristine waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea!

We embarked on a captivating day trip to Capri from Sorrento, and challenging our organisation, we managed to have a day full of activities and fun.

5 mistakes to avoid when visiting Capri

scooter tour in italy

To help you planning a perfect day trip to Capri, I summarised below 5 main mistakes to avoid on a first visit.

1. Not planning in advance because “it’s a small island”

One common mistake is assuming that Capri’s small size means you can explore it without any planning. However, Capri is a mountainous island with numerous attractions. To make the most of your stay, it’s advisable to create a little itinerary.

2. Thinking of going “on foot”

We almost fell into this mistake too. A part of our group wanted to go “on foot” while me and Alessio were strongly against. Indeed, while some may consider exploring Capri on foot, it’s important to note that the island’s size makes it impractical and time-consuming. Opting for other modes of transportation, such as scooters or buses, is a better choice, especially if you have limited time..

view of the city of capri from a corner - capri scooter itinerary

3. Renting a car

Renting a car in Capri is not recommended. Many places lack parking spaces, and during the summer season, finding a spot can be extremely challenging. Moreover, the cities of Capri and Anacapri are car-free zones. Unless you’re staying longer than three days, having a car doesn’t offer significant benefits.

4. Checking only the “famous” beach spots

Capri is renowned for its glamorous beach spots, with the one at the Faraglioni being particularly popular. However, this beach tends to be overcrowded, has limited scooter parking, and can be quite expensive. Explore other beaches and coves on the island that are equally worth visiting.

5. Thinking of doing it “on a budget”

For decades, Capri, along with Taormina and Positano, has been considered one of Italy’s most glamorous summer destinations. As a child, I remember how many Italians regarded a summer in Capri as the epitome of a luxurious lifestyle, symbolizing social status akin to the conspicuous displays of today’s luxury holidaymakers.

Although times and holiday destinations have certainly changed since the 90s, Capri still exudes an undeniable glamour that makes it a high-end and expensive destination. This means you should let go of the idea of finding a “1 euro fried pizza” like in Naples and adjust your budget to accommodate higher expenses. While the city of Anacapri offers slightly more affordable options, it is still not comparable to the “normal” prices found on the mainland

How to Get to Capri

sorrento port - boat and flowers

Because Capri is an island, the only means of reaching it from the mainland is by boat. Currently, there are several options to reach Capri from Naples, Sorrento, Ischia, and the Amalfi Coast.

Getting to Capri from Naples

When traveling from Naples to Capri, you have two different options. You can depart from either the Calata Porta di Massa port or the Molo Beverello port. The choice of port depends on the type of boat you prefer. Hydrofoils depart from Molo Beverello, while slower and more affordable ferries depart from Calata Porta di Massa.

If you prefer the faster (but more expensive) option, SNAV is the recommended company. They offer hourly departures, and the journey from Naples to Capri takes just 50 minutes. The price for a return trip for two people is 89.00€.

If you are willing to sacrifice some speed for cost savings, Caremar is your best option. However, please note that the ferry schedule is not as frequent. It is advisable to check the schedule to find the best departure time. In high season, a return ticket for two people costs 66.00€, and the journey takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Getting to Capri from Sorrento

When traveling from Sorrento to Capri, you have the advantage of a quick journey. Both the ferry and hydrofoil options take between 20 and 35 minutes to reach the island, departing from the port of Marina Piccola .

Caremar is the primary provider of ferry services from Sorrento to Capri, with a ticket price of 76.00€ for two people. The ferry journey takes approximately 32 minutes.

For a slightly faster option, consider the hydrofoil Alilauro Gruson . The price for a return trip for two people is around 80.00€, and the journey takes just 17 minutes!

Other providers such as NLG and SNAV (whose summer schedule is not available yet) also offer transportation from Sorrento to Capri..

Getting to Capri from the Amalfi Coast

If you are in the Amalfi Coast and wish to visit Capri, the best departure point is Amalfi. The travel time varies depending on the type of boat chosen. Hydrofoils take around 45 minutes, while ferries take approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. Prices range between 77.00€ and 100.00€, with NLG and Alicost being the main providers. Just be aware the connection between the Amalfi Coast and Capri runs only from April to October.

Getting to Capri from Ischia

If you’re planning an enjoyable island-hopping adventure in the Gulf of Naples, Ischia is the ideal starting point to reach Capri. Unfortunately, there are no ferries available directly from Procida to Capri. The ticket prices for the Ischia-Capri route are similar to those of other routes, typically around 93.00€ for a return trip for two people. The journey takes approximately 42 to 50 minutes.

The main providers for this route are Alilauro and Alicost . They operate connections between Ischia and Capri from the end of April to mid-October, departing from the Port of Ischia.

A (brief) history of Capri

Piazzetta di Capri - corner view church

The island of Capri holds a rich historical legacy, making it a treasure trove of archaeological and cultural discoveries. Its history dates back to prehistoric times, and as a former Greek colony, both the towns of Capri and Anacapri likely existed during that period, albeit under different names. However, it was during the Roman era that Capri’s history took a significant turn. Emperor Tiberius chose Capri as his residence for the final twelve years of his life, constructing twelve remarkable Roman villas where he spent his time. While Villa Jovis remains one of the best-preserved and accessible villas, the remains of the other eleven villas are scattered across the island, bearing witness to this fascinating period.

Following the decline of the Western Roman Empire, Capri came under the rule of Naples. However, the island faced centuries of pirate attacks, with one of the most notable being led by the Ottoman corsair Barbarossa Hayreddin Pasha, famously known as “Barbarossa,” who razed the Castle of Anacapri, now known as Barbarossa Castle. In the early 19th century, Capri became a contested territory between the British and French powers, eventually being handed over to Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies in 1813. The late 19th century marked a turning point for Capri as it gained popularity among artists and wealthy individuals seeking to experience the enchanting Blue Grotto and the island’s captivating beauty. Since then, Capri has retained its allure as one of the world’s most exclusive and sought-after destinations for travelers.

Capri scooter itinerary: unforgettable rides with stunning coastal views

Capri vespa road map with pin points and main locations to visit

Capri’s narrow streets, limited parking areas, and car-free zones make scooters the ideal choice for exploring the island. Exploring Capri by scooter is not only easy and safe but also cost-effective. Additionally, it allows you to experience a taste of la dolce vita as you enjoy scenic rides along the coast. In the following sections, you will discover everything you need to know about renting a scooter in Capri, the best routes to follow, and the main sights to explore.

Capri scooter rental: Tips and recommendations for a smooth experience

Upon your arrival in Capri, you’ll likely notice two prominent features: a multitude of convertible taxis and a wide selection of scooter rental shops. Indeed, both options are incredibly popular for exploring the island. When it comes to scooter rentals, there are various types of shops available. Some exclusively rent Vespas (though not the vintage ones, unfortunately), while others offer a range of scooter models to choose from. Prices typically range between 50€ and 80€ per day, which usually includes the cost of fuel. It’s advisable to steer clear of shops that charge over 100€ per day or do not include fuel in the rental price, as they may be attempting to take advantage of customers.

laura and alessio at marina piccola with their scooter helmets

For our scooter day trip, we opted for Rents Scooter Capri . Conveniently located near Marina Grande, it is the closest shop for scooter rentals. Their rental rates start at 30€, which includes fuel, making it an affordable choice. Additionally, they provide customers with maps and valuable tips for the day, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience.

What you need to rent a scooter in Capri

Before embarking on your Capri scooter adventure, it’s important to familiarise yourself with the necessary requirements for scooter rentals. Reputable rental shops have certain prerequisites in place to ensure a safe and responsible rental experience. Here are the essential items you’ll need:

  • Driving License: while technically not required for 50cc scooters, most rental shops will ask for a valid driving license. This ensures that you are familiar with the rules of the road and helps prevent any potential accidents.
  • Credit Card: similar to car rentals, scooter rentals typically require a deposit. Having a credit card is essential for this purpose. Without a credit card, it may not be possible to rent a scooter.
  • Valid Form of ID: to verify your identity, you will need to present a valid form of identification such as an identity card or passport. Photos of ID documents are generally not accepted.

Exploring Capri’s iconic landmarks by scooter: a comprehensive one-day scooter itinerary

Now that you’re familiar with the process of renting a scooter in Capri, it’s time to embark on an extraordinary two-wheeled road trip! The roadmap provided above serves as a comprehensive summary of all the key highlights we explored during our day trip in Capri. If you have additional days in the island, I’ll share a few more attractions that you can add to your itinerary down below.

Your journey begins at Marina Grande , which serves as the perfect starting point for your adventure. From here, you have the flexibility to choose various directions based on your preferences and interests. Below, I’ve outlined the exact route we took during our adventure, ensuring you don’t miss any of the highlights.

First stop: Enjoy the iconic sight of the Faraglioni

scooter tour in italy

The Faraglioni , Capri’s most iconic sight, are majestic rock formations that have stood close to the island coast for centuries. Towering at approximately 100 meters in height, these natural wonders captivate visitors with their awe-inspiring presence. As you arrive at the renowned Spiaggia Torre Saracena , one of Capri’s most famous beaches, you’ll immediately catch sight of the Faraglioni in the distance.

One of the best ways to get a close-up view of the Faraglioni is undoubtedly through a boat tour . Taking a boat tour allows you to admire these impressive rock formations up close and fully appreciate their natural beauty.

One interesting fact about the Faraglioni is that each of them has a name! The one connected to the land is called Stella, the middle one is known as Faraglione di Mezzo, and the third one is named Scopolo.

Indulge in Luxury: Exquisite Choices for Experiencing the Capri Faraglioni

If you have additional days to explore Capri, I highly recommend indulging in a unique experience. Da Luigi ai Faraglioni stands out as one of the most exclusive beach clubs on the island. It offers the opportunity to swim directly beneath the majestic Faraglioni rocks and savour authentic Mediterranean cuisine in one of Capri’s most breathtaking locations. Please note that access to Da Luigi ai Faraglioni beach club is exclusively available through prior reservation. For the Summer of 2023, the prices are as follows:

  • Admission with sun lounger or deck chair: €100, which includes a €55 credit to be used in the restaurant or bar
  • Ombrellone €15 cad.
  • Changing cabana: €20/each
  • Beach towel: €10/each
  • Boat to Marina Piccola: €7 per person.

Second stop: taste la dolce vita in the charming Piazzetta of Capri

Piazzetta of Capri town and its cafes - tower clock on dusk

As you continue your journey through the island, make your way to the delightful Piazzetta, the lively heart of the city of Capri. Here, you’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in Italy’s vibrant coffee culture, experiencing it at its finest. With a multitude of cafes scattered across the piazza, you’ll be spoiled for choice as you indulge in la dolce vita , savouring a cup of aromatic Italian coffee.

Don’t miss the opportunity of taking a slow moment just to observe life passing by while admiring the scenic view of the coast.

If you find yourself with some extra time to spare, make sure to seize the opportunity to indulge in a delightful shopping experience along the renowned Via Camerelle . This glamorous street is synonymous with luxury and elegance, boasting an array of upscale boutiques, designer stores, and exquisite restaurants that will tantalise your senses.

Where to park your scooter while stopping in Capri city centre

As mentioned earlier, it’s important to note that most areas in Capri are designated as car-free zones. This includes the city centre of Capri, which is entirely pedestrianised. As a result, even two-wheeled vehicles are prohibited from entering this area. If you wish to explore the city centre and require a safe place to park your scooter, there is a convenient parking option not too far from the central Piazzetta. This is famous as the Parcheggio di Piazzale Europa and it is located on via Roma.

Please be aware that the upper section of the parking facility is exclusively reserved for cars. Therefore, you’ll need to drive to the open lower section specifically designated for scooter parking. The parking area is just a short 5-minute walk away from the Piazzetta, allowing for easy access to the heart of Capri.

Third stop: Fall in love with Anacapri

Laura walking the streets of anacapri - capri scooter itinerary

If you loved Capri and its lovely Piazzetta, prepare to be captivated by the charming town of Anacapri. Nestled amidst the rolling hills of Monte Solaro, Anacapri exudes a picturesque allure with its unique architecture and charming little shops. It serves as the perfect tranquil and quieter alternative to the glamorous atmosphere of Capri.

Exploring Anacapri is an absolute delight. As you wander through its narrow alleys, each corner reveals a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. I couldn’t help but be drawn in by the town’s irresistible charm. In fact, I found myself regretting that I had only planned for a day-trip and wished I had more time to spend in Anacapri. Despite its small size, this town has some lovely and unmissable sights.

Be charmed by the Casa Rossa of Anacapri

Casa Rossa (Red House) of Anacapri main courtyard

One of my favourites was surely the eccentric Red House ( Casa Rossa ), which was built between 1876 and 1899 by the American colonel J.C. MacKowen. This unique villa seamlessly incorporates a 15th-century Aragonese tower, making it a remarkable blend of architectural styles. The Red House stands as one of the finest displays of artistic extravaganza on the entire island of Capri. As you explore the island, make sure to stop by. Indeed, this villa showcases a fascinating fusion of history, art, and culture, offering a glimpse into the extravagant lifestyle of its former owner.

The museum of the Red House is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 – 16:00.

Tip: I f you’re looking for a place to enjoy a coffee or a refreshing drink, be sure to visit Capri Crema Cafe, located right in front of the Red House. This charming café offers excellent coffee, with cups that coincidentally match the colours of the Red House, and a delightful assortment of pastries to complement your beverage. It’s the perfect spot to relax and indulge in a tasty treat while taking in the surroundings.

Fourth stop: Take a dip into the crystalline waters of Punta Carena (aka Faro Beach).

view of the faro of Punta carena in Capri - capri scooter itinerary

If you started this itinerary early in the morning (just like I did), you’ll now have two options to choose from. You can either head towards one of the magnificent coastal villas or enjoy a refreshing swim in one of the island’s secluded coves, followed by a delightful seaside lunch. If you’re interested in the latter option, keep reading. Otherwise, feel free to jump to the paragraph titled “Two or more days in Capri. Additional sights you can’t miss on your trip”. Punta Carena is a stunning coastal area situated on the southwestern side of the island of Capri. It is famous for its remarkable lighthouse, which happens to be the second tallest in Italy. Nestled beside this iconic landmark is a secluded rocky cove called “Faro Beach.” This hidden gem is a beloved spot for locals seeking refuge from the bustling crowds that typically flock to the more famous beaches near the Faraglioni area.

If you enjoy swimming and are comfortable mingling with lively groups of Italians, Faro Beach is an ideal destination for you.

How to get to Faro Beach in Capri

Punta Carena and Faro beach Capri scooter itinerary

There are two primary ways to access “Faro Beach”. The first option is through the exclusive Lido del Faro , where entrance is granted upon payment of a fee of €100, which includes a €50 food voucher for the on-site restaurant. The second option, is to bypass the lido and make your way down to the rocky area closer to the sea. This alternative is free of charge. However, there are a couple of important factors to consider.

Capri scooter itinerary - laura at faro beach capri

Firstly, the available space on the rocks is extremely limited. Indeed after 10 am, it can be challenging to find an unoccupied spot. Secondly, when the tide is high, there is a risk of losing your belongings. Therefore, it is advisable to exercise caution and keep a close eye on your personal items in such circumstances. Arriving around lunchtime, we discovered that all the spots were already occupied. So we decided to leave our belongings on the rocks. However, the sea was quite rough, and I almost lost all my clothes to the waves (see picture above)!

Enjoy a traditional Caprese for lunch

Capri scooter itinerary - Da antonio at faro beach

After enjoying our refreshing swim, it was time to satisfy our hunger with a delicious lunch. Instead of splurging at the expensive Lido Beach Club, we decided to go for the more affordable option of “Da Antonio.” This historic snack bar serves Capri locals since 1950 and is famous for its tasty caponata . While the caponata was a bit too much for me, I couldn’t resist trying a traditional Caprese focaccia, which turned out to be absolutely delicious. And what best place to try a Caprese then Capri???

Fifth stop: Take a boat trip to the Blue Grotto

Sommer, Giorgio (1834-1914) - n. 2146 - Capri - Grotta azzurra Capri scooter itinerary

The Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) is one of the most famous sea caves in southern Italy. This attracts every year visitors from around the world, and its still one of the most amazing natural wonders in the island. What makes this cave truly unique is the mesmerising effect created by sunlight filtering through an underwater cavity. This casts a beautiful blue reflection that illuminates the entire cavern.

Stretching approximately 50 meters into the cliff and reaching a depth of about 150 meters, the Blue Grotto offers a captivating experience. However, it’s important to note that the entrance is only around 2 meters high, allowing boats to enter only during low tide. Swimming inside the cave is strictly prohibited. However, it is fascinating to learn that during the Roman era, the grotto served as Emperor Tiberius’ personal swimming spot. In fact, the emperor adorned the cave with several statues. These have lately been recovered from the depths and are now on display in the Red House in Anacapri.

The Blue Grotto is steeped in legends dating back to medieval times. Indeed, it was believed to be infested with demons and monsters. These captivating tales add to the allure and mystique surrounding this extraordinary natural wonder.

How to get to the Blue Grotto in Capri

Access to the Blue Grotto is exclusively available through organised tours operating from 9 am to 5 pm. It’s important to note that tours are subject to weather conditions. Indeed, in the event of strong winds or high tide, tours may be canceled for safety reasons. The entrance fee for the Blue Grotto is 14 € per person. Tours are conducted using small rowboats that can accommodate a maximum of four passengers.

For security purposes and due to the small entrance passage of the cave, visitors will be required to lay at the bottom of the boat rather than sitting or standing. This precaution ensures a safe and smooth passage into the Blue Grotto, allowing everyone to marvel at the enchanting beauty of the illuminated cave.

Last stop of the Capri scooter itinerary: end your day at the top of Monte Solaro

Capri scooter itinerary - Monte solaro chairlift view

Conclude your Capri scooter tour by visiting one of the most breathtaking locations on the entire island: Monte Solaro. As the highest peak in Capri, soaring 589m above sea level, it offers unparalleled panoramic views that are sure to leave you in awe. The locals affectionately refer to it as the “Cloud Catcher”. This is due to the frequent presence of a mystical fog enveloping the peak, especially during twilight hours.

This phenomenon occurs as a result of temperature fluctuations throughout the day. This cause the moist air to rise and create a captivating misty atmosphere. Standing atop Monte Solaro, you’ll feel as though you’re on top of the world, surrounded by the ethereal beauty of the island and the azure Tyrrhenian Sea stretching out before you.

How to get to Monte Solaro

To reach the summit of Monte Solaro, there are two main options, both departing from Anacapri. The first option is to embark on a scenic hike that takes approximately 45 minutes. This 3.7km route winds its way uphill, showcasing the natural beauty of the surroundings. The hiking path is well-maintained, and as you progress, the incline becomes less steep. However, please note that this option requires a certain level of fitness.

Alternatively, you can opt for the historical chairlift, which has been in operation since its construction in 1952. The chairlift departs from the centre of Anacapri, conveniently located just a few streets behind the Red House. In a mere 13 minutes, the chairlift transports you to the summit of Monte Solaro. Operating hours during the summer season are from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. A return ticket for the chairlift cost €14.

Whichever option you choose, reaching the top of Monte Solaro is the perfect way to end your scooter day trip to Capri.

Fall in love with Capri’s magnificent villas

Capri scooter itinerary - Villa san michele

There is a quite interesting Italian term called “ Villeggiatura ” of which derives the verb “villeggiare”. This encompass the concept of taking a break in a remarkable destination. Its origins trace back to the Roman “ otium villa ,” signifying a retreat from the demands of everyday life. Capri has always been an epitome of Villeggiatura. Its numerous villas stand as testaments to people’s quest for splendid and secluded havens, offering an escape from the ordinary and a chance to indulge in dolce far niente .

Capri boasts more than 10 historic villas. Some of them are open to the general public, some others are available only for exclusive private rentals. Among the ones you must include in your list, Villa San Michele probably stands at the top. This 19th-century architectural marvel, captivates visitors with its breathtaking collections and exquisite gardens, inviting you to immerse in a world of beauty and tranquility. Villa San Michele is open all-year-around and the entrance ticket is of 10€.

Another breathtaking villa to include in your itinerary is Villa Lysis . A magnificent example of Art Nouveau architecture of the last century. This stunning villa was constructed by the French novelist Jacques d’Adelswärd-Fersen as a permanent retreat from his public life. Offering respite from his once controversial lifestyle. With its multi-level layout and panoramic gardens, Villa Lysis offers an unparalleled view of the coastline. Additionally, situated at just a few steps away, the ruins of Villa Jovis , one of the historical villas of Emperor Tiberius, that incredibly connects to the main garden. Tickets for Villa Lysis have a cost of 1,50€ while Villa Jovis is 6€.

Take a relaxing walk from Marina Piccola to the Garden of Augustus through the winding Via Krupp

Capri Scooter Itinerary - View of Via Krupp from the Gardens of Augustus

Via Krupp is a historic winding footpath that connects Marina Piccola to the Gardens of Augustus , offering breathtaking views along the way. Commissioned by Friedrich Alfred Krupp and completed in 1902, this elegant pathway gracefully winds through the rocky terrain, standing approximately 100 meters above the sea. Unfortunately, the pathway has been closed for security reasons in recent years due to the risk of falling rocks. During my visit, I could only catch a glimpse of Via Krupp from the Gardens of Augustus. However, I have exciting news to share! In March 2023, the Mayor of Capri announced the official reopening of Via Krupp for the summer of 2023. This means that you will have the wonderful opportunity to take a stroll along this iconic pathway from Marina Piccola to the Gardens of Augustus, immersing yourself in the beauty and charm of Capri. Don’t miss this unforgettable experience!

How to walk from Marina Piccola to the Gardens of Augustus with map.

Once Via Krupp reopens, walking from Marina Piccola to the Gardens of Augustus should take no more than 30 minutes. The route covers a distance of about 1.9 kilometers and is mostly flat, making it a pleasant and leisurely walk. However, it’s worth noting that the duration may vary depending on factors such as photo stops or a slower pace. You can use the above map as a reference to guide you.

For a convenient starting point, you can begin your walk from Marina Piccola Beach or the nearby Hotel Nautilus. Simply head towards the Hotel Nautilus and then turn slightly right to find the entrance to the Via Krupp pathway. From there, follow the path uphill until you reach the Gardens of Augustus, where you can immerse yourself in the beauty of the surroundings.

The Gardens of Augustus, formerly known as Krupp Gardens, underwent a name change in 1918. These magnificent botanical gardens are a must-visit in Capri. To enter the gardens, there is an admission fee of 1.5 €. However, you have the option to purchase a combined ticket for 5€, which includes access to the nearby Charterhouse of St. Giacomo as well. This provides an opportunity to explore both captivating sites and immerse yourself in the natural beauty and historical significance of Capri.

Explore the best Capri beaches and beach clubs

When visiting Capri, especially during the summer season, it would be a missed opportunity not to spend a day or two at its captivating beaches and beach clubs. See below a list of the best beaches and beach clubs in Capri.

Spiaggia di Marina Piccola

Capri scooter itinerary

Alongside the previously mentioned Faro Beach, one of my personal favorites is Spiaggia di Marina Piccola. This renowned beach offers breathtaking views of the Faraglioni rock formations and boasts mesmerizing turquoise waters. While exploring the area, keep an eye out for the close Siren’s rocks. A legendary spot where Ulysses succumbed to the enchantment of the sirens.

If you prefer a free beach experience, there are two options available in the proximity of Marina Piccola: Marina di Mulo and Marina di Pennauro . However, be sure to arrive early as they tend to fill up rapidly. Alternatively, you can opt to rent a comfortable sun bed from one of the numerous beach clubs dotted along the bay. These beach clubs are easily identifiable by their vibrant and picturesque umbrellas, adding to the vibrant ambiance of the coastline.

Undoubtedly, the most renowned beach club on the island is Bagni Internazionali di Capri. As the largest beach club in Capri, it spans across an expansive 3000 square meters spread on different levels. This exclusive beach club boasts a private parking area, multiple restaurants, and a plethora of facilities. Notably, it is famous for featuring the most photogenic and picturesque beach beds found anywhere on the island. A visit to Bagni Internazionali di Capri is an absolute must for beach enthusiasts seeking a luxurious and unforgettable experience.

Bagni di Tiberio Beach

Capri scooter itinerary

If you’re seeking a serene and tranquil beach experience while basking in the crystalline waters of Capri, Bagni di Tiberio beach is the perfect choice. As the oldest beach club on the island, Bagni di Tiberio Beach Club has been welcoming visitors since 1926. Its name derives from its remarkable historical significance. Indeed, this beach club is situated on the grounds of Tiberius’ Palazzo a Mare. One of the twelve Emperor’s villas in Capri. The beach club has been thoughtfully built around the Roman ruins, offering an exclusive opportunity to swim amidst this ancient heritage.

To ensure a seamless experience at Bagni di Tiberio beach, it is strongly recommended to make an advance reservation due to the limited space available. You can conveniently book your entrance online through the provided link . The entrance fee for the beach is 15€. This grants you access to the facilities including a changing room with a locker, access to showers, and a private beach area. If you wish to enhance your comfort with a sunbed, there is an additional rental fee of 15€. Getting to the beach club can be done in two main ways: either by walking along Via Palazzo a Mare or by taking a boat from Marina Grande. It’s worth noting that boat transportation is included with your booking, ensuring a convenient and enjoyable journey to the beach club.

Marina Grande Beach

Capri scooter itinerary - View of Marina Grande beach

Marina Grande serves as a bustling hub in Capri, offering both a major arrival port for ferries from Naples, Ischia, and Sorrento, as well as one of the largest beaches on the island. As a tourist, arriving at Marina Grande for the first time can be overwhelming due to the abundance of activities and the influx of people, especially during the busy months of July and August. Buses, taxis, and small boats are readily available, eager to transport you to your next destination.

Located just a 5-minute walk from the busy pier, Marina Grande Beach stretches along a strip of land measuring nearly 300 meters. The great news is that unlike many other beaches on the island, this beach is completely free to access. As a result, it can get quite crowded, particularly during the warmer months when visitors flock to the area. However, if you prefer a more exclusive experience while staying in the area, Le Ondine Beach Club is the perfect choice. Situated centrally in the bustling Capri area, this beach club offers a completely private setting. Here, guests can indulge in a more luxurious and tranquil experience, away from the crowded public beach, while still being in close proximity to the vibrant atmosphere of Marina Grande.

Where to stay in Capri

While I haven’t had the opportunity to stay in any hotels in Capri personally, I can certainly provide you with some recommendations based on my knowledge of the hospitality sector. As mentioned earlier, Capri is famous for its higher costs. However, that doesn’t mean you have to drain your bank account to enjoy a holiday there. If you’re on a tight budget, it may be cheaper to opt for a day trip to the island and choose accommodation on the mainland, where you can find more affordable options offering similar experience. You can see below different hotels divided according to their categories.

Boutique hotels in Capri

Capri scooter itinerary

Small but charming, boutique hotels are in general my go-choice when it comes to visit a new place. They feature always the best decor and, if family run, they give you the opportunity for an enhanced local experience. Capri has numerous boutique hotels. However, I picked up my two favourite choices thinking about where I would love to stay for a possible future visit.

The first recommendation is Casa di Capri , a charming guesthouse located in the heart of Capri. This boutique hotel holds a special place as it was once owned by a historic family of artists and musicians. The property thoughtful renovation has preserved the original architectural elements of the house while incorporating modern comforts. Staying at Casa di Capri will provide you with a genuine sense of the island’s heritage and a chance to immerse yourself in the artistic ambiance. Prices starts at €550 per night for a double room.

My second recommendation is Hotel La Minerva . Situated in a tranquil corner of Capri, this family-run hotel offers a warm and intimate atmosphere. With its tasteful decor and attention to detail, La Minerva exudes elegance and sophistication. The personalised service and genuine hospitality provided by the friendly staff ensure a memorable and authentic experience. Price starts at €1.290 per night for a double room in high season.

Budget hotels in Capri

Capri scooter itinerary

Honestly there’s not such a thing as a “budget hotel in Capri”. Even lower-category hotels on the island tend to have high rates, especially during the summer months when the demand is high. If you have a budget of around €150-200 per night, you may need to adjust your expectations and consider more affordable alternatives.

For personal experience after an unfortunate b&b choice in Positano a few years ago, downgrade to these options only if strictly necessary. It’s always worth spending a few bucks more instead of discover someone has stolen your shoes! Sad but true story. While it may require stretching your budget, investing a little extra in a reputable hotel can provide you with peace of mind and a more enjoyable experience. Consider looking for mid-range hotels or guesthouses that offer a balance between affordability and quality. Additionally, booking well in advance and considering shoulder seasons or weekdays might help you secure better rates.

Some budget recommendations in Capri

Capri scooter itinerary

After a little research among the budget options for Capri, I don’t feel confident to suggest any of them. Maybe they are fantastic, but I don’t feel to recommend them here. Instead, I found two slightly more affordable options that still looks like two great places to stay.

Hotel Mamela sounds like a lovely choice with its airy and bright rooms, along with a stunning infinity pool overlooking Marina Piccola.

Starting around €400 per night for a Superior Double room, Hotel Mamela provides a more budget-friendly option compared to the luxurious choices mentioned earlier. However, it’s important to note that prices tend to increase as the demand grows during the summer season. Therefore, booking well in advance is advisable to secure the best rates.

My second, and probably favourite choice, is Villa la Pergola . This accommodation sounds truly like a hidden gem and a fantastic choice for a more affordable yet memorable stay in Capri. Villa La Pergola looks like acorner of paradise away from the crowds, allowing guests to enjoy tranquility and stunning views of the coast.

The rooms, with their picturesque views, provide a delightful experience. The large private garden, offers a serene space for relaxation after a day of exploring Capri’s attractions. If you are fortunate enough to secure a reservation during the summer months, consider yourself lucky as Villa la Pergola promises an unforgettable stay. Rooms starts at the unbelievable price of €100 per night for a double room in low season. The price goes up considerably in high season, so it’s better to book as soon as possible.

Happy travels!!
