Short ireland self-driving tours that are closer to dublin, 1. drive county kildare.

County Kildare is Dublin's closest neighbor. Plan a one day Kildare itinerary for a fun day out. Go shopping at Ireland's top outlet mall or visit the Irish National Stud farm.

They don't call Kildare Ireland's horse country for nothing! Extend this short Irish road trip from one day to a weekend and venture into South Kildare . Here you'll find tales of Antarctic adventure in Athy which Ernest Shackleton once called home.

Stay in the historic and posh Kilkea Castle , one of the coolest castles in Ireland . Explore the various manor homes and gardens in South Kildare and you may even come face to face with a smiling donkey!

2. Waterford and Wexford

Whatever the season, a Waterford and Wexford road trip in Ireland's Ancient East has something special to offer. Wexford is known for having the best strawberries in Ireland so time your Waterford and Wexford road trip for the summer season.

Dungarvan is a great home base for exploring County Waterford. If you happen to do this Ireland self-drive tour in winter instead, make sure to plan a stop at the Wexford Wildfowl Reserve to see Greenland White-Fronted Geese as they overwinter in Ireland.

You'll find traces of beloved American President JFK all around Waterford and Wexford. The JFK Arboretum is a great place to stop and stretch your legs with a short hike.

This Ireland road trip is easily doable in a weekend, but there is plenty to do if you'd like to take a longer or more leisurely Irish road trip in this area.

3. Dublin to Tipperary

Dublin to Tipperary is another fantastic short self-driving tour that can easily be accomplished in a weekend. Make a beeline for the bad-ass Rock of Cashel with detours to discover all the things to do in Kilkenny City and Carlow along the way.

4. Carlingford Lough

Head North from Dublin for an ideal long weekend drive that covers both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Carlingford Lough is the dividing line between the North and South.

Book in at Ghan House Hotel . From here it takes less than 10 minutes to walk into Carlingford Town with its spectacular colorful pubs and picturesque King John's Castle jutting out into Carlingford Lough.

Take Carlingford Lough Ferry into Northern Ireland and enjoy views of the Cooley Mountains and Cooley Peninsula from the Mourne Coastal Drive. Discover quaint little towns in Northern Ireland like Rostrevor where echos of C.S. Lewis' Narnia can be felt everywhere.

This Ireland road trip is ideal if you prefer a more relaxed pace and don't want to be in the car every day. Once you arrive in Carlingford Town, you could cycle to Omeath or take a long hike into the Cooley Mountains.

The Ultimate Self-Drive 10-Day Tour of Ireland

Itinerary — Your Ultimate 10-Day Self-drive Tour of Ireland

The-Ultimate-Tour-of-Ireland-Unique-Experiences-Off-the-Beaten-Path

Day 1: Dublin - Belfast

Total driving distance & time: 180 km – 2 hours 10 minutes, excluding stops

Turn on your Paddy the Pocket Pilot App and get on the road! Your ultimate self-drive tour of Ireland starts with an adventure to Newgrange, a magical Stone Age passage tomb decorated in megalithic art.

After exploring this incredible Neolithic structure, you will travel north to Belfast. Here, you can immerse yourself in the Titanic Experience at the interactive visitor centre of Titanic Belfast.

The wonderful and tragic stories told about the most famous ship in the world, and its doomed fate, is a moving experience.

Finish the day with a fantastic black cab tour of Belfast. Your cab will even pick you up from your hotel! (Optional)

The evening is yours to explore Belfast’s thriving pubs, restaurants, and shops. Get a great night’s sleep at your carefully handpicked accommodation.

Day 2: Giant’s Causeway - Derry

Total driving distance & time: 165 km – 2 hours 30 minutes, excluding stops

The second day features one of this tour’s most-anticipated stops — Giant’s Causeway.

But the entire Causeway Coastal Route is just as breathtaking and a joy to drive.

Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge is another highlight. Feel everything from fear to exhilaration as you cross the open ocean with air beneath your feet!

The Paddy App will also guide you to some secret locations off the beaten track.

Your next stop on day two is Derry. Northern Ireland’s second-largest city is steeped in rich and fascinating history.

Enjoy exploring the city at night because you will take a tour of the walled city on day three.

We recommend treating yourself to a gourmet and craft beer experience at the Walled City Brewery.

Day 3: Derry - The Hills of Donegal

Total driving distance & time: 110 km – 1 hour 50 minutes, excluding stops

Start the day with a walking tour of Derry led by a local guide. This experience will help you understand our past struggles and the long road to peaceful times in the North.

It’s time to leave Derry and head into the wild northwest. The Hills of Donegal are waiting!

Embark on a memorable drive that takes in the Glengesh Pass and the Assaranca Waterfall.

Paddy the Pocket Pilot will direct you to Grianan of Aileach, a 5th-century stone fort, where you can take in some truly stunning views.

Head to your accommodation in the picturesque village of Ardara, County Donegal, and treat yourself to a night of seafood and “craic” (fun) with the locals.

Day 4: Donegal - Connemara

Total driving distance & time: 260 km – 4 hours, excluding stops

Today’s road trip has the double joy of passing through Sligo – William Butler Yeats’ County – and making a short trip to Westport – Ireland’s favourite town!

Your time in Westport starts with a charming walking tour of the town followed by a fabulous lunch.

This will fuel you for a delightful journey through Connemara National Park and along part of the famous Famine Trail.

You will then visit Kylemore Abbey, a stunning 1,000-acre estate overlooking Kylemore Lake. Enjoy strolling around the abbey and soaking up the beauty of the Victorian Walled Garden.

Your journey continues to Clifden where you will find great bars, restaurants, and nightly music. Don’t be afraid of striking up a conversation with the locals over a tasty pint of the Black Stuff!

If you’ve ever had dreams of becoming a Prince(ss), now’s your chance! We have added the option of staying in Abbeyglen Castle!

Day 5: The Aran Islands

Total driving distance & time: 100 km – 1 hour 40 minutes, excluding stops

The morning starts with the short drive to Rossaveal Pier overlooking Galway Bay. Feel the excitement build as you board the ferry to the Aran Islands.

When you land on rugged Inishmore, the largest of the three Aran Islands, it’s time to explore! If you’d like, you can either cycle or make a special request for a jaunting cart (horse and carriage) against an additional charge.

Your route will take you toward Dún Aonghasa, an ancient, clifftop stone fort standing 100m over the ocean.

It’s then time to circle back toward the ferry and the mainland. On your way, you may pick up a word or two in “Gaelic” from the locals. And why not treat yourself to an authentic Aran Sweater?

When you arrive back at Rossaveal, your Galway adventure begins. Hug the coastline all the way into this bustling, bohemian city.

This much-celebrated place is home to entertaining street performers, an infectious atmosphere, and plenty of craic.

You won’t need your Paddy App to find entertainment this evening! It’s Friday night every night in Galway!

Day 6: Galway - Cliffs of Moher

Total driving distance & time: 90 km – 1 hour 45 minutes, excluding stops

Medieval history is at the very heart of Galway. Discover more about this side of the city on a tour led by our local guide.

Head down the narrow streets where you can duck in and out of brightly coloured shops. This is the perfect time to try on Galway Shawls and Claddagh Rings!

Pass under the famous Spanish Arch and enjoy the ambience of Claddagh, a delightful fishing village.

Sadly, you’ll have to leave Galway, but the day has more treats in store!

Travelling southwest, it’s time to visit the otherworldly Burren National Park and the jaw-dropping Cliffs of Moher.

On this adventure, you will visit Corcomroe Abbey, a 13th-century Cistercian Monastery as well as the 16th-century Dunguaire Castle in Kinvara.

At the Cliffs of Moher, you will walk over this awe-inspiring natural feature as the powerful waves of the Atlantic Ocean crash into it below.

The cliffs are one of the most iconic sights, and most spectacular natural features, in Ireland. We’re almost certain you’ll be lost for words.

Our itinerary will also send you off the beaten path, so you can enjoy some of the area’s hidden gems.

You’ll spend the evening in Doolin – the hometown of traditional Irish music.

Day 7: Doolin - Dingle

Total driving distance & time: 240 km – 3 hours 30 minutes, excluding stops

A trip to Ireland is not complete without seeing its incredible ancient structures. Today, you drive to the most famous Dolmen (AKA portal tombs) at Poulnabrone.

Dolmen are Neolithic monuments scattered throughout the country marking burial sites and passageways dating back to 3000BC.

After being awed by the Dolmen, it’s time to make the short trip to the farmers at Caherconnell who will treat you to a spectacular sheep-dog trial.

Prepare to be mesmerised by the farmer and his furry friend as they work in tandem to gather up their flock of sheep.

It’s then time to leave the west behind as you cross the border into County Kerry by ferry. Your next destination is the celebrated harbour town of Dingle.

The evening is yours to soak up the atmosphere in Dingle’s fantastic restaurants and famous quirky pubs.

Why not sit in Foxy John’s hardware store, order yourself a drink, and strike up a conversation with a friendly local?

Day 8: The Dingle Peninsula

Total driving distance & time: 50 km – 2 hours 30 minutes, at a leisurely pace!

Your morning starts on the water exploring caves and inlets on Dingle Bay by kayak. You may even meet County Kerry’s biggest celebrity – Fungie the Dolphin.

If kayaking isn’t your thing, don’t worry. You can take a moderate-paced hike up Mount Brandon instead. This walk offers the reward of 360-degree panoramic views of Dingle Bay and Castlegregory.

Or perhaps you just want to stroll around this colourful town teeming with charming cafes and original local craft shops? Take it at your own pace. It’s your holiday – Do it your way.

In the afternoon, jump in your car and take a delightful trip along one of Ireland’s most scenic roads – The Slea Head Drive.

You spend a second night in the buzzing town of Dingle – relax and enjoy.

Day 9: The Ring of Kerry - Kinsale

Total driving distance & time: 200 km – 3 hours 30 minutes, excluding stops

After saying a fond farewell to Dingle, you will journey towards the Ring of Kerry – one of Ireland’s most famous driving routes.

The first stop takes you to Killarney, considered by many as the Ring of Kerry’s starting point.

The Ring of Kerry is the very definition of the word “scenic”. You will discover famous sights and hidden gems along the way, including Moll’s Gap, Torc Waterfall, and Ross Castle.

We will arrange a guided tour of Ross Castle for you. Here, you will learn what life was really like behind those imposing stone walls.

The beautiful heritage town of Kenmare is the perfect place to stop for lunch and some shopping.

This is your last night on tour, so we’re sending you to the coastal town of Kinsale. This picturesque place is famed for its culinary culture, delivered by many award-winning restaurants.

Kinsale also has a great tradition of poetry, silver, gold, and glassware manufacturing. You can see this in the local shops and galleries which proudly have work by talented local artists.

Day 10: Cork - Kiss the Blarney Stone

Total driving distance & time: 320 km – 3 hours 30 minutes, excluding stops

Wake up refreshed and ready for a guided walking tour through Kinsale’s narrow streets. Your tour is led by one of our favourite guides – Barry!

Paddy the Pocket Pilot will then direct you towards Blarney because you MUST NOT leave Cork without visiting Blarney Castle and Gardens.

This is the home of the Blarney Stone. If you want the gift of the gab, you need to give it a big fat kiss!

Your final stop before driving back to Dublin is the Rock of Cashel. This historically significant site is over 1000 years old!

Marvel at its medieval round tower, cathedral, chapel, and castle. This is a truly fantastic way to end your trip.

It is now time to turn off your engine and dry your tears. Sit back and soak up everything you have experienced over the last 10 days.

If you have any time left before leaving the Emerald Isle, we will give you plenty of amazing tips and recommendations for things to do, eat, and entertain you in Dublin’s fair city.

Our travel consultant Rebecca was fabulous. She accommodated us in modifying our schedule at no charge after my wife's mother's death. She cheerfully changed our Dublin hotel to a more central location and always responded quickly to any questions or concerns. We are planning a Scotland trip in 2023 again using Nordic Visitor and hope to have Rebecca again. In 2021 we used Nordic Visitor for a 2-week driving Iceland trip that was also flawless.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ireland Driving Tours

In case you have a few questions before booking your Ireland driving vacation, we’ve collected and answered the most important ones for your peace of mind. You can also find more detailed answers and travel tips in our Ireland Travel Guide . Or, if you want to know more about our processes and payment details, check out our FAQ page .

1. What side of the road do drivers use in Ireland?

In Ireland (and Northern Ireland), you should drive on the left-hand side of the road. This means that you’ll be using a right-hand drive car, and changing gears on your left side. If it’s your first time driving on the left, we recommend you consider renting an automatic car for ease of use.

2. Can I choose my arrival date?

Yes, you can. Our Ireland self-drive tours can start on any day between April and October. When you’ve picked your favourite package and you’re ready to book, simply pick a date in the calendar that suits you best. Your personal travel consultant will then get in touch to confirm your details.

3. Can I customise my self-drive tour?

When creating our packages, we aim to show our guests the very best of Ireland. But we understand everyone is different. Should there be anything in particular you’re keen to see, or if you want to stay longer to explore more of Ireland, simply get in touch so we can help arrange it all for you.

4. When should I book my flights?

We recommend that you do not book flights until we have confirmed your package. Once you book your tour with us, your personal travel consultant will contact you within two working days with more details about your arrangements. You can then book your flights with the confirmed start date of your tour.

5. Is it safe to drive in Ireland?

Yes. The roads in Ireland are accessible and in good condition. Driving around Ireland is also a great way to discover the country! Go at your own pace and stop when you want to take it all in! But make sure to follow the road rules to stay safe. Read our driving guide for more information.

6. Can I drive in Ireland with an overseas licence?

Yes. However, if you are from outside the European Union, you can only use your home driving licence if it is in English (for example if you are from the USA or Australia). If your licence isn’t in English, you’ll have to obtain an international driving permit.

7. What is the Ring of Kerry?

The Ring of Kerry is a scenic drive and tourist trail around the Iveragh Peninsula in the southwest of Ireland. It is also part of the famous Wild Atlantic Way route. When you want a road trip that delivers stunning Irish coastal views and historic attractions, the Ring of Kerry is for you.

8. Can I drive to Ireland from London?

Yes you can, although as Ireland is an island you’ll have to take a ferry across the Irish Sea. If you are starting or ending a driving tour of the UK and Ireland in Dublin, we're happy to organise the Irish leg of your journey.

9. Can you drive from Ireland to Scotland and England?

Technically yes. While Ireland is an island, and you can easily drive from Ireland to Northern Ireland (which is part of the UK), you will need to take a ferry to the island of Great Britain.

Not sure whether to visit Ireland or Scotland ? Take a look at these  Ireland and Scotland tours  and soon you could be experiencing both Celtic countries on one unforgettable trip.

10. Do I need extra insurance to drive in Ireland?

Our aim is to provide you with all the necessities to enjoy a worry-free trip. This is why we included collision damage waiver insurance as part of all our driving packages.

To safeguard your trip from the unexpected, we highly recommend that you purchase travel insurance.

11. What is the legal alcohol limit for driving in Ireland?

Drinking and driving laws in Ireland are strict. The legal limit is 50mg (80mg in Northern Ireland) of alcohol per 100ml of blood. It is tricky to translate this into how many drinks will put you over the limit. For that reason, we recommend taking no chances. Avoid drink-driving and save the beer or whiskey for later.

12. What should I pack for my trip?

The Irish weather can be variable, even between April and October. Regardless of the weather we recommend bringing light and waterproof layers, light gloves, a hat and a scarf. If you intend on going for coastal walks, don’t forget a pair of walking shoes (or boots). Read more in our packing guide .

13. Where is the best scenery in Ireland?

As you drive around Ireland, you’ll soon realise that there isn’t just one best place. We believe a self-drive tour will allow you to see the Emerald Isle at its best and enjoy the many scenic highlights.

The best scenery in Ireland includes:

  • Ring of Kerry
  • Dingle Peninsula
  • Cliffs of Moher
  • Aran Islands
  • Slieve League Cliffs
  • Giant's Causeway

You can get inspired by reading about some of our favourites places in Ireland  or browsing these classic  Ireland holidays .

14. From where can I start my Ireland driving tour?

All our self-drive Ireland packages currently start from the capital city, Dublin. If you plan on flying into another airport (such as Cork or Shannon), please get in touch with our team. We could arrange a private transfer to Dublin for you.

15. What are the best driving tours in Ireland?

According to our consultants, here are the top 5 Irish drives, the most scenic ways to see Ireland:

  • Explore the rugged Ring of Kerry
  • Adventure yourself along the Wild Atlantic Way
  • Drive the Slea Head , part of the Dingle Peninsula
  • Discover County Sligo and Yeats Country
  • And why not drive the coast of Northern Ireland ?

16. When is the best time to visit Ireland?

For the best weather and longer daylight hours, we recommend visiting between April and October. At this time, attractions also have longer opening hours meaning you can make the most of your tour! Read more about the best time to visit Ireland depending on your interests .

17. How long does it take to drive around Ireland?

The amount of time it takes to drive around Ireland depends on the sights and attractions you want to see. For a comprehensive tour of the island, we recommend a classic 10-day itinerary. We also offer express tours and leisure tours depending on how long you have to visit Ireland.

Nearby Merrion Square and St. Stephen’s Green are perfect city parks for a peaceful break.

End the day in the Temple Bar area.  This trendy area has many interesting shops and restaurants.  After dinner, enjoy a walk through the lovely cobblestone streets, stopping at pubs along the way for some traditional Irish music.

Glendalough

Visit the Glendalough Monastery in the beautiful Glendalough Valley. This 6 th -century monastic settlement has seven church ruins, graveyard and an intact round tower.  After walking the ruins, explore the surrounding trails and lakes of the stunning valley, part of Wicklow Mountains National Park.

We provide more details in our article about Glendalough Monastery and the Best Glendalough Walks .

Ireland’s Ancient East

Explore Kilkenny , dubbed “Ireland’s Medieval Capital”.  Walk the colourful streets where there are over 60 traditional pubs.  Tour the 12 th -century, fortress Kilkenny Castle , perched over the River Nore.  See the many architectural additions that have been made over hundreds of years.  Enjoy a lovely stroll on the paths and grassy lawns of adjacent Kilkenny Castle Park.

The Rock of Cashel is an ancient fortress.  Built high atop an outcrop of limestone, this was the home of the High Kings of Ireland.  Walk through several spectacular medieval buildings.  The immense, thick walls and the roofless shell of the 13 th -century St. Patrick’s Cathedral are incredible.  Admire the wonderful entry archway of Cormac’s Chapel built in 1127.  Walk through the old cemetery and view the oldest building on the Rock, the Round Tower.

Wild Atlantic Way

The Wild Atlantic Way stretches 2,600 kilometres through nine counties on Ireland’s west coast.  It is described as the longest coastal driving route in the world.

Get ready for dazzling coastal viewpoints, stunning jagged cliffs and the friendly towns along the way.

Cork City is a gastronomic delight, defined by its great food markets and restaurants.  The heart of a food tour is the famous English Market in the city centre.  In a Victorian building, with beautiful columns and vaulted ceilings, over 140 vendors create colourful picture-worthy displays of their wares, typically local produce.

Wander town exploring historic sites, like the medieval city wall in Bishop Lucy Park .  At St Anne’s Church to climb the 120-foot tower and ring the famous Shandon Bells .

Visit Fota House Arboretum and Gardens , outside of the city.  Take a tour of the impressive home and walk the massive arboretum and gardens.

With extra time and no hatred for throngs of tourists, drive to Blarney Castle to kiss the famous Blarney Stone .

A great end to your foodie tour is dinner at Ballymaloe House.   Known for new Irish cuisine, their menu is crafted from local produce including food produced at the onsite farm.

The town of Killarney has been welcoming visitors to the Killarney Lakes for 250 years. It is a busy town with lots of restaurants, bars and accommodation options.

Be sure to spend some time in town. Admire the beautiful, Gothic revival St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral . The interior is equally impressive. The Franciscan Friary’s ornate Flemish-style altar piece and stained glass windows are well worth a look.

Killarney National Park includes the three Killarney Lakes and the surrounding mountains and woodlands. The lakes cover about a quarter of the park’s 10,200+ hectares. The park is a UNESCO biosphere reserve and a special protection area for birds, with many birds staying year-round.  Wildlife is abundant. Ireland’s only remaining herd of Red Deer roam the park. The lakes contain a number of fish species.

The heart of the park, the Bourn-Vincent Memorial Park (originally called the Muckross Estate), is a great starting point for visitors. The ivy-covered Muckross House , built in 1843, is open for tours.

Muckross Gardens are extensive and renowned for their rhododendrons and azaleas. Plant species not usually found this far north flourish due to the area’s milder climate. The ruins of Muckross Abbey , a 15 th century Franciscan friary, are nearby.

The fully-restored, 15th-century Ross Castle sits on the shore of Lough Leane. It is a typical tower house surrounded by a defensive wall, with towers at each corner.

Walking, cycling and boating are great ways to explore the national park. For a relaxing tour, take a jaunting car ride . These traditional horse-drawn carts are driven by locals who are happy to share their stories about the region with visitors.

About 3 kilometres south of Muckross House, visit Torc Waterfall . A wooded pathway leads to the 18-metre waterfall. Nine kilometres further south, Ladies View is a great stop for a stunning view of Upper Lake.

Ring of Kerry Drive

This 150-kilometre drive around the Iveragh Peninsula is one of Ireland’s most popular tourist destinations.  It make a perfect day trip and provides a taste of the Wild Atlantic Way. Get ready to see spectacular mountains, rugged coastline, pristine beaches, medieval ruins and friendly, picturesque villages.

Stop at the Kenmare Stone Circle . Built in the Bronze Age between 2,000 and 4,000 years ago, the circle is more ovoid measuring 15.5 metres by 17.5 metres.  This is the largest stone circle in southwest Ireland. A large boulder-dolmen tomb is at its centre. If staying in Kenmare , check out Sheen Falls and Holy Cross Church .

At Kenneigh, leave N70 and take the Skellig Ring, a wild, scenic drive itself. Pull over and enjoy the view anywhere along the route. There are countless options. Kerry Cliffs is the closest point on the mainland to the Skellig Islands.

Portmagee , a pretty, little town, is famous for the colourful houses along its main street.  Cross the bridge to Valentia Island . The Skellig Experience Visitor Centre highlights the Skellig Michael Monastery and the Skellig Islands .  With more time in County Kerry, consider a day trip to visit the islands. Get tickets ahead of time as the number of visitors allowed on Skellig Michael is quite limited and weather often cancels trips. Trips run daily from March through October weather permitting.

Skellig Michael , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Europe’s most magnificent monastic sites. Sixth-century monks built a compact settlement on the cliffs, 200 metres above the Atlantic Ocean. Climb the 600+ steps, chiselled by the monks into the sandstone, to the ruins of beehive huts, the Church of St. Michael and more. The island is an internationally renowned site for breeding seabirds and was a filming location for Star Wars: Episode VII and Star Wars: Episode VIII.

From Portmagee, travel north to Cahersiveen . There are two stone forts on the peninsula, 3 kilometres west of town. Cahergall , over 1,000 years old, has massive drystone walls with flights of steps and terraces in the inner face of the wall. The circular wall of Leacanabuaile , built in the 9th or 10th century AD, is over 3 metres thick.

The Ring of Kerry drive ends in the town of Killorglin . The town comes alive for 3 days every August for the Puck Fair, one of Ireland’s oldest fairs.

Dingle Peninsula Drive

The most westerly peninsula in Europe, Dingle Peninsula has rugged mountains, valley lakes, seaside cliffs and long, sandy beaches. The charming town of Dingle is the peninsula’s hub. Beautiful stone buildings house the town’s many art galleries, shops, diners and pubs. It’s a great place to stretch your legs and grab a bite to eat. We timed our arrival to catch the Dingle Food Festival , which is held annually on the first weekend of October. It’s a popular event with lots of food stalls and cooking demonstrations along with wine and beer tasting.

Boat tours of Dingle Bay take visitors out for a different view of the stunning coast. The bay’s star attraction for over 35 years was a bottlenose dolphin named Fungie. He disappeared in 2020 and is missed. He delighted in playing close to the tour boats becoming a favourite with locals and tourists alike.

Slea Head Drive heads west from Dingle hugging the ocean coastline.  This drive travels through a dramatic landscape of prehistoric ring forts, early Christian churches and picturesque villages.

Dún Beag Fort , built atop the steep sea cliffs, has guarded the land for over 2500 years. A series of banks and ditches show its defensive structure. While there are several examples of beehive huts along the drive, the huts at Fahan are a popular stop. It is a great example of how the plentiful, flat stones were piled into beehive-shaped, waterproof buildings without using any mortar. Unfortunately, a visit into the fort is no longer allowed, due to cliff erosion. Safe viewpoints have been established. Be sure to see the short audio-visual presentation in the Visitor Centre to learn more.

At Dunquin, the Blasket Centre explains the rich cultural heritage and rugged life of subsistence fishing and farming on the Blasket Islands. Evidence exists of island habitation for 2500 years up to their abandonment in 1953. If time permits, take a day trip to Great Blasket , the largest island.

Continue to the stone-walled Riask Monastic Settlement, thought to be from the 5 th or 6 th century. See outlines of beehive-shaped huts and slabs with carved crosses. The drystone-walled Gallarus Oratory is a Christian church over 1000 years old. Nearby see Gallarus Castle , a 15 th -century fortified house. The 12 th -century Kilmalkedar Church shows classic Romanesque architecture with its round-arched doorway. The church sits on the site of a 6 th or 7 th -century monastery.

Return to Dingle. Drive north through Conor Pass , the highest-driveable mountain pass in Ireland. It’s a perfect stop for one last panoramic view of the peninsula.

Cliffs of Moher

The shear, limestone Cliffs of Moher , on Ireland’s west coast, stand 214 metres at their highest point. The eco-friendly visitor centre, built in 2007, has world-class exhibits. O’Brien’s Tower, at the edge of the cliffs, was built in the early 1800s as a tourist attraction. It still provides visitors a great bird’s eye view to the base of the cliffs.

Ireland's Cliffs of Moher with path on right

The cliffs are a protected area for seabirds, with over 20 species under protection. The cliffs stretch for 8 kilometres. Explore their wild beauty with an easy hike along the well-worn trail. Make sure to bring a camera to capture incredible views of the iconic cliffs and surf beaches.

These impressive cliffs form a protective barrier around the rich, fertile land at the southern end of the Burren region . The region is the northwestern portion of County Clare. The Cliffs of Moher and the Burren were awarded UNESCO Global Geopark status in 2011.

Stop at any of the small towns and villages of the Burren and enjoy the local pubs and restaurants. Find many hidden churches, abbey ruins and medieval forts. Just north of the cliffs is Doolin , internationally known as a centre for live Irish music played at many popular pubs.

This is the end of the 7-Day Road Trip.  We know that those on the 7-day tour want to stay longer. Sorry. Its time to drive back to Dublin which is about 3 hours from the Cliffs of Moher.

Limerick and County Clare

A stroll along the River Shannon is the perfect way to start a visit to the city of Limerick.  On the river bank, see the restored King John’s Castle , Limerick’s most iconic landmark.  Its high-tech 3D projections show what it was like to live in a castle 800 years ago.

Person Limerick's castle and River Shannon background

Just outside the city, in County Clare, enjoy Bunratty Castle & Folk Park . It recreates a 19 th -century, Irish village with actors playing Victorian era residents.

County Clare’s most famous landmark is the Cliffs of Moher . Be sure it’s on the “Must-See” list.

With more time in the area, check out the remains of the ancient 10 th century stone fort, Cathair Chonaill . Visit Poulnabrone Dolmen nearby, a megalithic tomb which archaeologists have shown was in use between 5,200 and 5,800 years ago.

Stone structure with large flat slab on top of vertical slabs

County Clare is the unofficial capital of Irish music. Spending the night in Doolin is a great idea.  Visit a lively, local pub to enjoy this fine music tradition.

This is another vibrant, Irish city worth spending time in.  It’s an easy walk around the town’s compact Latin Quarter . These colourful, pedestrian-only streets are filled with stores and pubs. St. Nicholas Collegiate Church , Ireland’s largest medieval parish church, has operated continuously as a church for over 700 years.

People on street Galway Latin Quarter

At Connemara National Park , the7-kilometre Diamond Hill Loop is a great, short hike.  Its wonderful, blue lakes and peat bogs are a sample of the entire park.

Another popular activity in County Galway is cycling the 12-kilometre Sky Road loop starting from the town of Clifden.

With more time in the county, visit Inishmore in the Aran Islands .  Meet the friendly locals and discover stone structures that were built 3,000 years ago.

Ceide Fields and Sligo

The beaches of Westport , in County Mayo, are some of the best on the west coast.  Enjoy a walk or a swim to get the day started. For the rest of the day explore several prehistoric sites.

Pile of stones mark walls at Ireland's Ceide Fields

Almost 6 centuries ago, Ceide Fields was a Neolithic farming village high on the ocean cliffs.  The visitor centre provides a huge amount of information about these early villages, their agricultural methods, and the ancient walls preserved beneath the blanket bog.  Guided tours of the grounds show visitors sections of the excavated walls and demonstrate how the walls are found under the bog. The site is open daily June through November and by appointment the rest of the year.

Carrowkeel Passage Tombs is a megalithic cemetery on a quiet hilltop. A less developed site than the larger Carrowmore, this National Monument complex has 14 visible, passage tombs.

Ireland’s largest megalithic cemetery is Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery, with over 60 tombs.  The oldest tomb, labelled tomb 52A, is thought to be 7400 years old.  It is the earliest known piece of free standing stone architecture in the world.

Large rock pile with passage to center Carrowmore Ireland

Before continuing the drive north, duck into the partial ruins of Sligo Abbey to see its 15 th century high altar. The abbey is open to wander from April through October.

The impressive Donegal coastline is the finale on this drive along of the Wild Atlantic Way.  Find secluded coves and dramatic cliffs.

View from top Slieve League cliff of water below

The cliffs of Slieve League are some of the most magnificent.  The 600-metre cliffs are much higher than the Cliffs of Moher, but not as well known.  The views from the upper car park are stunning.  Hike further up the footpath for 500 metres to be rewarded with an even more spectacular view of these sheer cliffs.

Glenveagh National Park is 16,000 hectares of wilderness.  Enjoy a guided tour of its fairy-tale 19 th -century, Glenveagh Castle overlooking Lough Veagh.  Walk the castle’s impressive gardens and see many exotic plants.

Person under garden arbor Glenveagh Castle Gardens

With more time in Donegal, drive the Inishowen Peninsula .  Find pretty villages and reach Malin Head , Ireland’s most northern point.

Northern Ireland

Derry City (also called Londonderry) is one of Europe’s finest examples of a walled city.  It is the only city in Ireland whose city walls are still completely intact. These 9-metre thick walls even survived the 1688 ‘Siege of Derry’.  Spend at least an hour walking along the top of the walls soaking in history and viewing the old medieval town within them.

A drive along Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coastal Route showcases many great sites.

See the ruins of a bishop’s mansion at Downhill Demesne .  Walk over to the nearby Mussenden Temple perched on the cliff edge to get panoramic views of the coastal beaches below.

Circular Mussenden Temple

Make a brief stop to see the ruins of Dunluce Castle .  The 17 th century castle was abandoned when part of it collapsed into the ocean below.

The highlight of the drive is the over 40,000 interlocking rock columns of Giant’s Causeway.  This beautiful landscape was created 60 million years ago. The columns formed when lava flows cooled, shrinking and cracking like mud puddles do.  Scramble among the long interlocking basalt columns.  This UNESCO World Heritage Site has a great visitor centre that explains the unique geology of the area.

Brave enough to walk across the swaying Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge ?  The bridge, 30 metres above the sea, is the same bridge local salmon fishermen have used for centuries to reach Carrick-a-Rede Island (with repairs of course).

Game of Thrones fans enjoy the many recognizable locations along the coast including: Ballintoy Harbour, Larrybane and Cushendun .  The Dark Hedges are just a short trip inland. With more time, drive the entire Antrim Coast for even more spectacular cliffs on the way toward Belfast.

Titanic Belfast , an amazing multi-media experience, is the city’s most popular attraction.  Its four floors and nine interactive galleries tell the story of the world’s most famous ocean liner, from construction to its sinking in the middle of the Atlantic. Learn everything, from the detailed construction of the ship and its outfitting, to the atmosphere of the thriving city and shipyards of Belfast during the early 20 th century. A multimillion pound refreshment of the museum opens in 2023.

Large windows in Titanic Belfast look north to the Titanic Slipway where the Titanic was actually built. Walk this plaza and see the outline of the ship on the ground. It provides a better appreciation for the ships truly titanic size.

The SS Nomadic floating museum is moored just to the south. It was the Titanic’s original tender ship, ferrying passengers from shore to ship for their ill-fated voyage.

The Ulster Museum displays artifacts of Irish history from prehistoric treasures to modern times.

Belfast Castle overlooks the city from the slopes of Cave Hill.  Built first by the Normans in the 12 th century, Belfast Castle has burned down and been rebuilt several times throughout its history. The latest reconstruction was completed in 1870.  Take a tour of the interior of this elegant home.  See the stunning Italian-style serpentine exterior staircase.  In the adjoining yard, have some fun searching for the nine cat references and sculptures in the gardens.

“The Troubles” were an unsettling and violent era in Northern Ireland’s history.  On a Black Taxi Tour visit landmarks important in these conflicts between Catholic and Protestant neighbourhoods. The local guides provide their perspective on the events and impact of the Troubles.  Additionally, self-tour these neighbourhoods to see the various political murals located at the Peace Wall and the Solidarity Wall .

Brú na Bóinne

Driving back to Dublin, a noteworthy stop is Brú na Bóinne (the Boyne Palace).  In the Boyne Valley, there are a number of ancient cemetery tombs dating back to the Neolithic time period.  Two of the main necropolis sites are Newgrange and Knowth   Newgrange, with its large stone walls topped by a grass dome, is immense at 80 metres in diameter.  Walking into the long tomb, it seems incredible that this structure is well over 5000 years old, older than the Egyptian pyramids.

The 14-day Ireland road trip ends back in Dublin. Visit the attractions missed on Day 1.

Know Before You Go

When is the best time to go to ireland.

The best weather is June through August making it peak tourist season. We went in late September-early October and found touring to be enjoyable. Yes, of course, it rained but the temperatures were still reasonable.

Is it easy to self-drive Ireland?

Although many people join organized bus tours, we feel that you’ll experience greater satisfaction touring Ireland by car. The itinerary in this article provides a great way to plan your Ireland road trip with lots of flexibility.

How do I rent a car in Ireland?

Rental cars can easily be picked up when you arrive at Dublin Airport. North American visitors are reminded that most rental cars have manual transmission. Automatic transmission vehicles are available, but usually at a surcharge.

What currency is used in Ireland?

The island of Ireland consists of two nations, each with their own currency. – The Republic of Ireland uses the Euro (€). – Northern Ireland uses the pound sterling (£).

Best Self-Guided Walking Tour of Dublin (With Map)

If you’re after a self-guided walking tour of Dublin that packs a punch, you’ve landed in the right spot.

I’ve lived in Ireland’s capital for 34 years and I’m very confident you’ll love the mini-itinerary that I’ve outlined below.

It includes a one and two day option and it takes in the main things to do in Dublin , unique sights that tourists tend to miss and some historical pubs, too.

Our free Dublin walking tour follows a clear, logical route to ensure that you make the most of your time here. Dive on in!

The Dublin walking tour map above will give you an overview of where our route will take you over each day.

As you can see, each day has a clear route and packs in a mix of key attractions and places you hopefully won’t have heard of.

If you want a guided tour, you’ll find organised Dublin walking tours with excellent reviews right here (affiliate link).

Money saving tip: If you’re planning on visit some of the main fee-paying attractions in the city, the Dublin Pass can save you €50+

1. Molly Malone Statue

Molly Malone

Day 1 of our self-guided walking tour of Dublin kicks-off at the now-iconic Molly Malone Statue on Suffolk Street in the heart of the city.

The bronze statue shows Molly, a famous character from the Irish song ‘Molly Malone’, who sold ‘Cockles and Mussels’ on the streets of the capital.

The statue was erected in 1988 and it has moved a handful of times. You won’t spend long here, but it’s a nice starting point for your stroll!

2. Trinity College

Trinity College

Our second stop of the day is a handy 2-minute walk from the first! Trinity College is one of the most famous landmarks in Ireland .

It is a renowned educational institution and it was established in 1592. It’s also inside the grounds of Trinity that you’ll find the ancient Book of Kells .

Trinity is the oldest university in Ireland and you can take a ramble through its impressive grounds, admire its magnificent architecture and tour the wonderful Long Room Library .

It’s in the Long Room that you’ll find 200,000+ of the college’s oldest books. It’s worth booking the skip-the-line ticket here as it gets busy ( this ticket gets you access to Trinity and Dublin Castle).

3. The Palace Bar

The Palace Bar

The next stop on our self-guided walking tour of Dublin is going to be a brief one (I’m not suggesting you go drinking at this stage of the day!).

While there are many old pubs in Dublin , few are as visually impressive as the Palace Bar, which you’ll find a 3-minute walk from Trinity.

This pub was built in 1823 and it stands today, many years later, as a Victorian shrine, of sorts. Admire its impressive interior, first, and then saunter inside for a nosey (you can return here later).

It’s located just inside the cobbled streets of Temple Bar , so you can have a nosey around this area, if you like.

4. O’Connell Bridge

O'Connell St.

When you’re ready, take the 3-minute walk to O’Connell Bridge, which spans the murky waters of Dublin’s River Liffey.

O’Connell Bridge replaced Gandon’s Carlisle Bridge, which opened in 1794. The bridge that stands to this day opened back in 1880 and cost £70,000 to build.

It measures at 148 ft in length and 160 ft in width. Named after political leader Daniel ‘The Liberator’ O’Connell it boasts impressive features, like its impressive lanterns.

5. The General Post Office

GPO

Walk up the historic O’Connell Street (be careful – there are plenty of dodgy characters that hang around here) and head straight from the The General Post Office (GPO) – it’s around a 4-minute walk from the last stop.

The GPO was built during the early 19th century and it’s here that you’ll see some of the more impressive architecture in Dublin , courtesy of the buildings neoclassical design.

This building played a key part in Irish history during the Easter Rising of 1916 when it served as the rebel headquarters. You can take a tour here that’ll immerse you in the city’s past.

6. The Spire

The Spire

One of the more unique places you’ll visit on this walking tour of Dublin is the Spire – it’s less than 1-minute walk from the GPO… you can’t miss it.

Also known as ‘the Monument of Light’ (along with many other colourful nicknames…), the Spire stands 394 feet tall and it was erected in 2003.

I’ll be honest – the Spire is impressive when viewed from afar, but there’s no real point of seeing it up close.

7. The Ha’penny Bridge

Ha’penny Bridge

The next stop on our self-guided walking tour of Dublin is a 7-minute walk from the Spire and it’s arguably one of the most beautiful bridges in Europe!

The Ha’penny Bridge , officially known as the Liffey Bridge, is an iconic pedestrian bridge that spans the River Liffey that was built in 1816.

It’s name comes from the fact that you once had to pay a toll to cross the bridge. The cost was a Ha’penny and there were turnstiles at either end of the bridge.

The bridge is a little slice of ‘old-Dublin’ that still used heavily to this day. It’s believed that around 27,000 people cross it each day.

8. St. Michan’s Church

Michan’s Dublin

Photos with thanks to Jennifer Boyer

You won’t find our next stop, St. Michan’s Church , on many Dublin walking tours, however, it’s  well-worth  a visit.

It’s a 12-minute walk from the Ha’penny Bridge and it’s here that you’ll find a historic building that dates back to the 11th century.

Oh, you’ll also find crypts with mummies… yes, mummies. In fact, some of the mummies at St. Michan’s are thought to be over 400 years old.

If you’re looking for unique things to see in the capital, make sure to add this one to your self-guided walking tour of Dublin.

9. The Brazen Head

Brazen Head

We’re off Dublin’s oldest pub, next – The Brazen Head (a 4-minute walk from St. Michan’s).

The present building that you see today dates back to 1754, local legend claims that the site has housed a tavern since 1198.

And though no documents exist to prove that, we know that there’s been a licensed alehouse here since the mid 17th-century at least (which is old enough!).

If you’re feeling peckish, this is a handy lunch-spot. It’s well worth visiting either way as this place is steeped in history .

10. Christ Church Cathedral

tipping in dublin

One of the most popular stops on this self-guided walking tour of Dublin is the stunning Christ Church Cathedral , a 6-minute walk from The Brazen Head.

Christ Church Cathedral was founded in the early 11th century under the Viking king Sitruic Silkenbeard (amazingly, that is his real name!).

Originally built as a wooden structure in 1030 with the help of an Irish priest, it was rebuilt in stone in 1172.

The current Gothic-style cathedral, with its striking architecture and impressive interior, has been standing since the 12th century.

11. Dublin Castle

Dublin Castle

Few castles in Ireland receive visitor numbers like our next stop. Dublin Castle is a 4-minute walk away and it’s here you’ll find an impressive structure that dates back over 800 years.

Originally developed as a medieval fortress under the orders of King John of England, work on Dublin Castle was started by Meiler Fitzhenry in 1204 when the city was under Norman rule following the invasion of 1169.

Constructed on elevated ground once occupied by an earlier Viking settlement, it was completed in 1230 and took on the look of a classic Norman courtyard design.

One of the most prominent parts of the castle today, the imposing Record Tower is the only surviving tower of the original Medieval fortifications.

While its rectangular battlements on the roof are actually a 19th-century addition, they look pretty convincing!

12. St. Patrick’s Cathedral

St Patrick’s Cathedral

Another firm favourite on this self-guided walking tour of Dublin is located a 12-minute walk from the castle.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral is a historic religious landmark that was founded in 1191. It’s the largest church in Ireland and it boasts Gothic architecture.

When you arrive here, take some time to saunter around the part and admire the cathedral’s exterior, before heading inside to get an eyeful of its outstanding interior.

13. The Guinness Storehouse

Guinness Storehouse

Photos © Diageo via Ireland’s Content Pool

Few Dublin walking tours can resist rounding off a day of strolling at The Guinness Storehouse , which is a 17-minute walk from St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Book your tickets in advance (self-guided or guided) and immerse yourself in the story of the most famous of the many Irish beers .

The building itself is part of the Guinness Brewery and it acts as a seven-story visitor centre that takes visitors through the history of Guinness along with how it’s made and more.

The tour finishes on the rooftop in the impressive Gravity Bar that overlooks Dublin City and beyond.

Day 2 of our self-guided walking tour of Dublin

walking tours of dublin

1. St. Stephen’s Green

Stephen's Green

We’re going to kick-start day two of our self-guided walking tour of Dublin at St. Stephen’s Green , which is often referred to as the ‘Lungs of Dublin’.

You’ll find the nine hectare/22-acre park at the top of busy Grafton Street when it’s home to commemorative sculptures, extensive trees and a large pond.

It has a pretty  wild  history that few are familiar with (read more here ) and it’s a nice, calm spot to kick-start the day!

2. Leinster House

The second stop of the day takes us 4 minutes down the road to Leinster House – the epicenter of Irish politics.

This is an impressive Georgian building that dates back to the 18th century. Now, while you can take a guided tour, if you like, you’re arguably best off admiring Leinster House from afar.

Unless you’re interested in politics, that is – in that case head on in for a journey back through Ireland’s political past.

3. National Gallery of Ireland

National Gallery Dublin

Photo left: Cathy Wheatley. Others: James Fennell (Tourism Ireland)

The National Gallery of Ireland is a 5-minute walk from Leinster House and it’s here you’ll find one of the most popular museums in Dublin .

It’s also one of the best free things to do in Dublin when it’s raining! For visiting art enthusiasts, the National Gallery of Ireland is an absolute must.

This cultural treasure trove houses a vast collection of paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts spanning various periods, from the Renaissance to the present.

Ireland’s artistic heritage can go overlooked by tourists and locals alike – this is an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in it.

4. Merrion Square

Merrion Square

Located in Dublin’s charming Georgian quarter, Merrion Square is a delightful mix of greenery and history (and it’s only 5 minutes from our last stop).

The square boasts finely manicured gardens that feel a far-cry from the busy city streets that lay just minutes away.

If you head for a stroll through its grounds, you’ll stumble upon impressive sculptures (including one of Oscar Wilde).

5. Irish Whiskey Museum

Irish Whiskey Museum

Photos by Brian Morrison via Failte Ireland

If you’re taking this self-guided walking tour of Dublin and it’s raining, our next stop will provide some welcome respite from the elements!

You’ll find the Irish Whiskey Museum a handy 15-minute stroll from Merrion Square and it’s here that you’ll discover the story behind the coveted Irish Whiskey .

I’ve done this tour in recent years and it offers a good mix (terrible pub intended…) of sippin’ and storytellin’.

You’ll get an insight into the history of whiskey and how it’s made and there’s also a tasting at the end.

6. Mulligan’s

Mulligan’s

© Tourism Ireland

Many Dublin walking tours take you to the busy pubs in Temple Bar . However, if you want to dodge the tourist traps, take the 6-minute walk from the Whiskey Museum to Mulligan’s.

You’ll find it on Poolbeg Street where it’s loved by locals and tourists alike for its old-worlde charm.

The pub received its license in 1782 but it operated as a Shebeen (a place where drink was sold illegally) for many years before.

The biggest compliment that I can give Mulligan’s is that walking through its doors makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

Expect a lovely, traditional interior, a fine pint of Guinness and a furnishings that have stood the test of time.

7. The Custom House

Custom House

The next stop on our self-guided walking tour of Dublin is the magnificent Custom House, a 4-minute walk from Mulligan’s.

This is an architectural marvel on Dublin’s waterfront and it was designed by James Gandon in the late 18th century.

The Custom House is famous for its neoclassical facade which is best admired from afar, first, before up close.

The building is now home to the Department of Housing.

8. The Famine Memorial

Famine Memorial

Dublin’s Famine Memorial is a poignant tribute to one of Ireland’s darkest chapters in history.

Located on Custom House Quay, a 4-minute walk from the Custom House, these haunting sculptures depict the devastating impact of the Great Famine in the 19th century.

The memorial serves as a solemn reminder of the suffering endured by the Irish people during that time and stands as a testament to the resilience and spirit of those who lived through the tragedy.

EPIC Museum

Photo left: Eileen Coffey. Others: Ros Kavanagh (via Fáilte Ireland)

The next stop on our self-guided walking tour of Dublin is a handy 2-minute walk from The Famine Memorial.

EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum explores the profound impact that Irish emigrants have had across the world.

The museum is housed inside a vaulted space and stories are told via interactive exhibitions and striking displays.

You’ll need to pay into this one but it’s well-worth it (especially if it’s raining!).

10. The Jeanie Johnston

The Jeanie Johnston

Photo left: Gareth McCormack. Others: Dylan Vaughan (via Failte Ireland)

Many Dublin walking tours omit the brilliant Jeanie Johnston Famine Ship which sits a 2-minute walk from the EPIC Museum.

The Jeanie Johnston is an impressive replica of the original ship that transported Irish emigrants to North America during the Great Famine.

The ship is a floating museum that offers an insight into the challenges faced by those Irish men and women that sought a better life across the pond.

You can take a guided tour here where you’ll be immersed in a story that shaped the very DNA of Ireland.

Dingle Way - Self-Guided

The Dingle Peninsula is the Ireland that we dream about on St. Patrick’s Day. Rugged coastlines and windswept hills give way to unspoiled villages and cozy B&Bs. These Notorious So-called 'Tourist Traps' Are Worth Visiting, According to Travelers

Travelers are speaking out to say these spots aren't half bad.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

Ah, the traveler’s debacle: To follow the crowd to major, must-see sights knowing they’ll be met with overpriced services, entertainment, food, and souvenirs — or to avoid these sites completely and search out hidden gems void of other tourists. To some, visiting Paris without going up the Eiffel Tower isn’t seeing Paris , while to others, the complete opposite is true.

It’s a question — or way of traveling — that isn’t always black-and-white. Most of us want to see the major sites — preferably without giant tour groups and overpriced crêpe stands — and stumble upon authentic places that few others will get to experience. So when is it worth following the crowd to a site you really want to see, even though it’s probably a tourist trap?

One user on Reddit , u/MarathonMarathon, posed that question , noting that for them, the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel in Shanghai was a tourist trap they ended up genuinely liking. “It's basically this short 5-minute tourist trap light show tram thing that takes you across the Huangpu River from the Bund to Pudong, with bizarre voice-overs. Sort of like some Disney attraction, but sadder, the very epitome of a kitsch tourist trap.”

The Reddit community responded, sharing the tourist-trap-inclined sites and tours that they genuinely liked and would recommend to others. Below are the “best” responses in order:

Maid of the Mist Boat Tour — Niagara Falls, U.S.

The 20-minute Maid of the Mist boat tour, which claims to be “the original Niagara Falls boat tour” — takes travelers to the foot of Niagara Falls where they can feel the power of 600,000 gallons of water crashing down and enjoy the resulting mist.

“You wait in line forever, the boat is packed, it seems cheesy ... and then you get up to the Falls and feel their power, you realize that the boat has the engine running at full power yet it struggles against the current and you realize that yeah, this is awesome,” said u/twoeightnine.

Original Sound of Music bus tour — Salzburg, Germany

The Original Sound of Music bus tour takes travelers through Salzburg, where "The Sound of Music" movie was filmed. The bus visits Mirabell Garden and Pegasus Fountain, where Maria and the children danced in the movie; Schloss Leopoldskron, the house, where the Trapp Family lived; and Church Mondsee, where Maria and Baron von Trapp got married, along with other sites.

User u/opuntialantana said the four-hour journey included, “Glorious views, drinks, snacks, and a Maria von Trapp lookalike leading us in singalongs as we drove from one filming location to the next. It was cheesy and it was perfect.”

Hobbiton Movie Set Tours — Matamata, New Zealand

At Hobbiton , visitors can walk through the lush pastures of the Shire and through the movie set used in "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" film trilogies. The part-bus, part-walking tour includes visits to the series’ most famous locations, including the Hobbit Hole where Bilbo and Frodo Baggins lived.

The 2.5-hour tour ends with a visit to the Green Dragon Inn , where a free drink concludes the tour of Middle-earth.

Guinness Storehouse — Dublin

The home of Ireland’s most iconic beer offers daily self-guided tours that include entry to the Guinness tasting rooms and a pint of Guinness. If you’re a true beer or Guinness connoisseur, you can opt for a “ premium experience ,” like a guided tasting with storytelling or a tour through the brewery’s historic sites — including their famous underground tunnels.

“When anyone came to visit [sic] me I always took them there; it never got old! It’s a well-curated museum and of course, the tap room is always fun to go to. Also, all my Irish friends were happy to go with me when I first moved there so it seems to be well-liked among people that live there too,” said u/tcpower2.

Hofbräuhaus München — Munich

Reddit user u/Triple10X said they initially went to Hofbräuhaus München “just to say that we've been there.” But after visiting several smaller German beer halls they felt that Hofbräuhaus was the best.

The three-floor beer hall has a Bavarian restaurant and ongoing shows that take place in a historic, 16th-century building. According to u/Triple10X, “The food we got was phenomenal, the beer was obviously good and the atmosphere was eclectic with multiple couples around us all talking to each other in different languages.”
