REVIEW: David Phelps – Gamechanger
Producer: David Phelps Record Label: StowTown Records Website: www.davidphelps.com
Ever since David Phelps burst on to the scene when he joined the Gaither Vocal Band in 1997, he’s been hard to pinpoint as a musical artist. He immediately endeared himself to fans of Southern Gospel music with his soaring tenor and heartfelt vocal delivery. He released a couple solo albums while with his first tenure with the group – but it didn’t really see him stretching too far from the inspiring chords of the GVB.
When he left the group in 2005 to pursue a solo career, he jumped labels and went to Word Records where he was fully engaged in a pop/contemporary sound with Revelation . Subsequent releases would see him toying the line between the more inspirational tones of his roots (see 2008’s The Voice or 2015’s Freedom ) and more pop-defined and eclectic releases (like his Christmas releases or 2005’s Life Is a Church ).
GameChanger sees Phelps swinging back to the more polished pop and eccentric releases rather than classically inspired inspiration albums. This album literally feels schizophrenic at times (in a good sense), covering so many musical styles and sounds. “Be My Brother” has a definitive late 80s R&B tinge to it, which Phelps interprets nicely. “Hello Beautiful” has a nutty, synth-pop vibe, while “Give It Time” is not unlike something you’d hear off of one of Clay Crosse’s mid-90s blue-eyed soul releases.
The title cut, “GameChanger,” is the most mainstream pop sounding of the lot, not unlike something you’d here on Top 40 radio by the likes of OneRepublic or for King & Country. This song in particular works really well with Phelps’ dramatic and operatic tones. “It Was Water” recalls early Bryan Duncan, while “Eye to Eye” is an intriguing duet with Phelps’ son Grant.
It’s not all sunshine and roses, and some of these songs just don’t work. “Fix Myself” tries a little too hard to recall Michael Jackson or Avalon’s Jody McBrayer-led tunes. “Love On the Horizon” see Phelps doing lots of vocal acrobatics coupled with an odd backing track that leads into an 80s infused pop number. “Song For Sinners” feature a more stripped down production and uneven tempo, and it just feels out of place on an already cluttered release.
With 15 tracks, GameChanger just feels a bit bloated and chaotic at times. Phelps is a talented vocalist, writer, and arranger, but he might do well to tone it down or stick to just a couple of sounds. When this record works, it really works. Cuts like “GameChanger,” “Eye to Eye,” “Give It Time” and “Be My Brother” are some of David’s best songs to date. However, this recording could have dropped 5 tracks (I’m looking at you “Love Is On the Horizon,” “Harmony” and “Fix Myself” in particular) to save the record from feeling too disjointed.

David Phelps to Release ‘GameChanger’ Album Sep 10
Nashville, TN (August 16, 2021) Known for his show-stopping, electrifying vocals—both as an award-winning solo artist and a former member of the world-renowned Gaither Vocal Band —singer/songwriter David Phelps returns September 10 with GameChanger . A sonic kaleidoscope of 15 pop, jazz, Inspirational, R&B and even Broadway-inspired selections, Phelps’ StowTown Records debut carries deeply personal and profoundly resonant messages of redemption and unity.
“While some might think GameChanger is a departure for me, it’s really just the next step in my development as an artist; this is who I am,” Phelps shares of the album, which he co-produced with his nephew, Grayson Proctor . “I started out in contemporary music before I joined the Gaither Vocal Band. I was blessed to be part of that amazing, iconic group and I loved those years very much, but I am and always have been a stylist, and that makes my music and career very eclectic.”
The album’s debut single, “Hello Beautiful,” is set for an exclusive Apple Music release August 20, along with the official music video. A bittersweet tribute to lifelong commitment backed by a syncopated, horn-studded rhythm section, “Hello Beautiful” encapsulates one of the album’s central themes. “I’ve always loved telling a redemptive human story,” Phelps says. “Nothing magnifies the splendor of humanity more than loving someone through all of life’s ups and downs. I can’t imagine many things more tragic than watching a loved one lose their memories of things once held dear—events, places, friends, children…even you. Heroes sometimes sit patiently, enduring thankless days caring for someone they love and to whom they have committed themselves.”
Additional highlights of GameChanger include the synth-pop album opener “I’m Gonna Love” ; “Song For Sinners,” with a mellow jazz groove gently beckoning wayward hearts; “I Remember What We Thought Love Was,” a poignant piano ballad dedicated to Phelps’ wife; and “Eye To Eye,” a soulful duet with his son, Grant, exploring the complexities of their relationship.
“My son and I love each other dearly and our bond goes beyond words,” Phelps shares of the inspiration for “Eye To Eye.” “However, we haven’t always seen things the same way. I have been forced to concede that his choices are his—and they aren’t necessarily bad. Regardless, we have each other’s back. I would fight for him and he for me. We can agree to disagree and still love each other deeply. It’s been a lesson I’ve had to learn as an adult, but it’s vital. It’s ok if we don’t see everything eye to eye.”
“If I can positively influence or inspire someone to look at a relationship in their own life and hang on to it, view it differently, or nurse it better, then I’m going to take the chance to do that,” he adds of GameChanger ’s thematic intent. “These songs are about the human experience, and I hope people can relate to that and be moved by them.”

David phelps “gamechanger” album review.
Prime Cuts: Song for Sinners, I Remember What We Thought Love Was, Be My Brother
Overall Grade: 4/5
It is not coincidental that David Phelps christens this record as GameChanger. Not only is this his debut record for StowTown, but it's also his most adventurous, daring, and innovative effort to date. Whilst Phelps may have cemented his reputation in Southern Gospel music with his involvement in the Gaither Vocal Band, this record proves that he cannot be domesticated to one genre of music. Rather, this new release is a sonic kaleidoscope of pop, jazz, Inspirational, R&B and even Broadway-inspired selections. Helmed by Phelps and his nephew, Grayson Proctor, GameChanger features 15 diverse-sounding selections canvasing an array of issues from brotherhood to forgiveness to romance to faith and much more.
Despite having the metallic-sounding syncopated beats that Drake would be proud of, "Hello Beautiful" also utilizes country music's story-telling technique to convey the power of commitment over the ups and downs of life. More innovative sounds come with the title track "GameChanger" which incorporates modern beats with elements of traditional gospel choir sounds and pop opera. Though one is not too enthused about the vanilla nature of the lyrics and melody, the synth-driven "I'm Gonna Love" finds Phelps breaking out into the pop arena with a youthful zest. While many of Phelps' peers would have stayed clear of hip-hop EDM beats, Phelps does it with class with "Fix Yourself."
Though many of the songs deal with relationships of all types, Phelps doesn't look at them with rose-tainted glasses. Palatable to real life where a father-son relationship can be messy, "Eye to Eye" recounts how our differences can drive us closer. "Be My Brother" is a heart-warming call for deeper friendships, a much-needed cry today. While the piano ballad "I Remember What We Thought Love Was" paints a picture of love that is realistic, biblical, and filled with wisdom.
When it comes to issues to do with faith: "Eventual Healing" (despite its nondescript melody) packs a good theological treatise on healing that is responsible to Scripture. "If I Forgive," which showcases Phelps multiple reaching octave vocals, helps ground the issue of forgiveness in the Gospel. Those who like a jazzy touch to worship will love the grace-infested "Song for Sinners." Therefore, if you are tired of CCM records where all the songs sound similar, then GameChanger is indeed is the game changer for you.
