AC/DC announce POWER UP European tour support, The Pretty Reckless

AC/DC have confirmed that they’ll be joined by The Pretty Reckless on all 24 dates of their highly-anticipated POWER UP European tour this summer.

AC/DC announce POWER UP European tour support, The Pretty Reckless

Exciting news! The Pretty Reckless will be back in Europe and the UK this summer, following their 2022 Death By Rock And Roll headline tour.

The New York rock titans – vocalist and guitarist Taylor Momsen, guitarist Ben Phillips, bassist Mark Damon and drummer Jamie Perkins – will be crossing the pond in order to support none other than AC/DC on the band’s highly-anticipated POWER UP run. They’ll be direct support on all 24 dates of the tour, from the opening night at Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on May 17, to the final gig in Dublin, Ireland at Croke Park on August 17.

The news arrives shortly after The Pretty Reckless celebrated the 10th anniversary of their iconic album Going To Hell earlier this month. Speaking with Spin , Taylor reflected that the record “changed our lives. Even though we maybe didn’t see it at the time, we certainly are feeling the effects of it to this day. First, it made us double down on our ethics. It gave us the confidence to go, ‘We’re doing the right thing by doing it this way,’ and continued us on the path that we’re still on.”

Speaking to NME last year about ‘Death By Rock And Roll’ , The Pretty Reckless’ frontwoman Taylor Momsen said that she “really consider this album [to be] a rebirth in a lot of ways”.

“Personally and as a band, it really feels like the first album again,” Momsen added. “It’s something very near and dear to my heart, but also something I’m extraordinarily proud of, and in my humble opinion I think we’ve really made something special, and I think it may be my best album yet!”

Following an extensive US tour this spring, New York City’s The Pretty Reckless have today announced a major UK and Europe tour this autumn.

The outing marks Taylor Momsen’s (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Ben Phillips (lead guitar, backing vocals), Mark Damon (bass), and Jamie Perkins (drums) first run of dates since 2016–2017’s “Who You Selling For Tour”.

The Pretty Reckless' unbelievable journey has quietly brought them from sweaty small gigs to successive number one hits, platinum plaques, and some of the biggest stages in the world—unprecedented for a rock act this century.

The Pretty Reckless formed in New York City during 2008, and the musicians and late producer Kato Khandwala initially made waves with their 2010 debut Light Me Up. After countless gigs, the band returned with “Going To Hell” in 2014. Not only did the record crash the Top 5 of the Billboard Top 200, but it also ignited three #1 hits — the Platinum-certified "Heaven Knows" (the biggest rock song of 2014), "Fucked Up World," and "Follow Me Down" — a feat that had not been accomplished by a female-fronted group since The Pretenders in 1984. Meanwhile, their third offering, “Who You Selling For”, saw them return to #1 on the Mainstream Rock Songs Chart with "Take Me Down", which cemented them as "the first band to send its first four singles to #1 on the chart", according to Billboard. Praise followed from Vogue, Nylon, and more, as the quartet lit up television shows such as Letterman and Conan. With over half-a-billion streams, they headlined countless sold out shows and toured with Guns N' Roses, Soundgarden, and many other heavy hitters. Fourth album “Death By Rock And Roll” was released in February 2021 via Fearless Records in the US and Century Media for the rest of the world. Upon release, the record topped multiple sales charts — including Billboard's Top Albums, Rock, Hard Music, and Digital Charts. The record also yielded several No. 1 singles — "Death By Rock And Roll", "And So It Went" (Feat. Tom Morello), and "Only Love Can Save Me Now" (Feat. Matt Cameron + Kim Thayil) all topped the charts. The Pretty Reckless are also the first female-fronted band to have back-to-back No. 1 singles at the active rock format and they are the first female-fronted act to have seven No. 1 singles on the Billboard Rock Radio Chart, a feat achieved with “Only Love Can Save Me Now". The album was universally praised by PEOPLE, V, The TODAY Show, The Daily Beast, Hypebae, SPIN, Rolling Stone, Bustle, Women's Wear Daily, Loudwire, and more.

2021 saw them return with their lauded fourth studio album, “Death by Rock and Roll” and they sound more alive than ever…

The band then head to mainland Europe for dates in the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and France.

The Pretty Reckless Tour Poster

There’s no hiding from the fact that rock n roll is a religion for the band. It’s a commitment to an ideal, a belief system. The lifestyle and the trappings may appear to be glamourous and romantic, but the road isn’t easy; it requires staying power and an enormous amount of faith. The Pretty Reckless – Taylor Momsen (vocals), Ben Phillips (guitar), Jamie Perkins (drums) and Mark Damon (bass) – are truly a rock n roll band.

Embodying unwavering integrity and serving up uncompromising anthems, the band’s unbelievable fourteen-year journey has quietly taken them from small sweaty gigs to successive number one hits, gold discs, and some of the biggest stages in the world, a rare achievement for a rock act this century.

The Pretty Reckless

Formed in New York City in 2008, the band initially made waves with their 2010 debut, LIGHT ME UP, then lit the fuse with GOING TO HELL in 2014. Not only did the record make the Top 5 of the Billboard Top 200, but it also ignited three #1 hits – the platinum-certified Heaven Knows (the biggest worldwide rock song of 2014), Fucked Up World and Follow Me Down – a feat that had not been accomplished by a female-fronted group since The Pretenders in 1984.

Their third album, WHO YOU SELLING FOR in 2016, saw them return to #1 on the Rock Chart with Take Me Down, which cemented them as “the first band to send its first four singles to #1 on the chart” according to Billboard. Praise followed from the likes of Vogue and Nylon and the band lit up television shows such as Letterman and Conan. With more than half a billion streams. They headlined countless sold out shows and toured with Guns N Roses and many other heavy hitters.

In 2017 a series of events then shook the group to its very core, and ultimately cast them in the kind of fire, tears and blood that don’t ever wash off. The band had landed a prestigious tour opening for Soundgarden in packed arenas across the USA. Chris Cornell from Soundgarden then tragically took his own life. The aftershocks reverberated throughout popular culture and left a deep scar on The Pretty Reckless. They retreated, cancelled most of their touring schedule and disappeared from the public eye.

Eleven months later, things worsened when their muse, friend and long-time producer Kato Khandwala died in a motorcycle crash. Taylor and Ben turned to writing to channel the emotional toll, and, in late 2018, The Pretty Reckless returned to the studio to record their fourth album, with the sessions lasting over a year. The first single from the resulting DXRNR (Death By Rock And Roll) album in 2021 – the haunting, crooning, howling and inspirational title-track – quickly rose to #1 on the Rock Chart. It marked the band’s fifth #1, a feat that has not been achieved by any female-fronted rock act in chart history. The DXRNR album also made it to the Top Ten of the UK album charts, their third album to reach this achievement.

And now, The Pretty Reckless sound more alive than ever. “We stuck to our ethics,” explains Taylor. “We built this up over a long time. Either you throw it all away or you go for it. It’s cliched, but rock and roll saved our lives.”

The wildest guitars in rock music:, zz top’s spinning fur guitars.

Of course, we couldn't make a feature about outrageous guitars without ZZ Top's iconic Spinning Fur Guitars. Made from real sheepskin, the twirling guitar for Billy Gibbons and bass for the late-great Dusty Hill were both created by Dean Zelinsky of Dean Guitars and they famously first appeared in the music video to 'Legs' in 1983. Billy Gibbons says: "The guitars are attached to our belt buckles. It's a rotary electrical contact and strap mount. A hole is bored in the back of the guitar at the balancing point and the device is mounted there. Oh yeah, you gotta look out for that thing coming back around. Get your head and neck out of the way or else it'll say hello in an unfashionable fashion."

Bill Bailey’s Gary Hutchins Six-Neck Guitar

Comedy legend, esteemed musician and Strictly Come Dancing champion, Bill Bailey, played this six-necked guitar aptly called The Beast as part of his stand-up routine in 2011. An apparent nod to Rick Nielsen's Five Neck, the instrument was created by guitar maker Gary Hutchins, the eponymous founder of Hutchins guitars, and it once went on display at London's Albert and Victoria Museum.

Nigel Tufnel’s Marshall Stack Guitar

It's fitting that legendary Spinal Tap axeman and amp aficionado Nigel Tufnel used to play a glorious Marshall stack guitar. One of only two ever made, the guitar has a Jackson neck and Seymour Duncan pickup, with the bottom stack detachable for quieter studio work. Naturally, all the volume and tone knobs go up to 11. Commenting on why the guitar was his mainstay for many European shows, Tufnel said: "Well, it's got a very Scandinavian look about it, doesn't it?"

Michael Angelo Batio’s Double-Guitar

Famous for his technical prowess and genre-straddling playing style, American heavy metal guitarist Michael Angelo Batio personally invented the Double Guitar - a V-shaped, twin-neck guitar that Batio plays both left and right-handed.

Rick Nielsen’s Five Neck

Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen with his iconic Five Neck guitar at a concert in 2012. Tired of performing with multiple guitars at concerts, Nielsen joined forces with guitar makers Hamer way back in 1981 to combine all of his guitar playing needs into one glorious instrument. The guitar was created by fusing the bodies of five Hamer Specials together and there have been several incarnations of the Five Neck. Hamer founder Frank Untermeyer said: "Rick's out of his mind, but in a wonderful way."

Steve Vai's Hydra guitar

Taking its name from the track 'Teeth of the Hydra', Steve Vai's new Hydra guitar was built in conjunction with the designers at Hoshino and is based on a "steampunk motif" idea of Vai's. Unveiled in December 2021, the Hydra is billed as a one-bodied, two-headstock-ed, three-neck-ed creature that encompasses, among other things: seven- and 12-string guitars; a four-string bass; sympathetic harp strings; half-fretless necks; single-coil, humbucking, piezo and sustainer pickups; floating and hardtail tremolo bridges; phase splitters; and much more. "It's an incredibly-built machine," Vai comments.

Bo Diddley’s Square Guitar

The blues rock legend made his first square guitar aged 17 as he couldn't afford to buy an electric guitar. He explained to Vintage Guitar in 1997: "(the guitar's) pickup was the part of a Victrola record player where the needle went in. I clamped it to the metal tailpiece to pick up the vibrations." The original guitar was sadly stolen, but in 1958 Gretsch later made a version with DeArmond pickups. Pictured is Bo proudly clutching it in 1959.

John Paul Jones’ Triple Neck Arch-Top Mandolin

The Led Zeppelin multi-instrumentalist's unique Triple Neck Arch-Top Mandolin was created by luthier Andy Manson in the mid-1970s and swiftly became a mainstay of Led Zep concerts. The famous electroacoustic instrument boasts 8-string mandolin, 12-string guitar, and 6-string guitar necks. Manson said decades later: "I designed and made the triple neck and took it to John's house. I said, 'Hi John I thought this might interest you.' He said, 'Wow, yes indeed, I can't wait to see Pagey's face when I walk on stage with this!' It cost £400 and I skipped off down the road feeling like a millionaire."

Prince’s Love Symbol Guitar

Pictured is Prince with a purple Love Symbol guitar in at The Grammy Awards in February 2004 where he performed his anthem 'Purple Rain'. Prince's range of Love Symbol guitars were based on the shape of the unpronounceable symbol he adopted as his moniker in 1993 in an act of rebellion against his record label, Warner Bros.

Steve Vai’s Ibanez Triple-Neck Red Heart Guitar

The virtuoso musician designed his Ibanez custom built triple neck with heart-shaped body guitar in 1988 as he wanted something "eye-catching" for the video to David Lee Roth's 'Just Like Paradise'. Steve Vai himself admits the guitar is "odd" and there have been three incarnations of the instrument – the original Red Heart, a spare called Red Heart II and a Purple Heart. Steve used the latter guitar on the Ultra Zone tour and wrote the song 'Fever Dream' with it.

Pat Metheny’s Pikasso Guitar

Canadian master luthier Linda Manzer created The Pikasso Guitar in 1984 when jazz artist Pat Metheny requested a guitar that had "as many strings as possible." The completely unique resulting instrument has 42 strings arranged in four different string sections.

Gene Simmons’ Axe Bass

Back in 1978, Gene Simmons joined forces with master luthier Steve Carr to create a unique bass guitar shaped like an axe that would suit his on-stage Demon persona perfectly. The resulting weapon-like instrument – aptly entitled The Axe Bass – is a true classic. Now a running trademark for KISS, there have been a number of incarnations of the Axe Bass including the pictured Cort GS-Axe-2 bass guitar Gene is aggressively clutching at the 2010 NAMM Show.

Michael Anthony’s Jack Daniel’s Bass

Michael Anthony's now famous Jack Daniel's Bass was created back in 1983 while Van Halen were working on their musical masterpiece '1984'. Anthony's guitar tech and good friend Kevin 'Dugie' Dugan was charged with creating the bass, which was made with the blessing of Jack Daniel's on one condition – that only three guitars were made. One is on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum, one is in storage and one is still used by Michael Anthony to this very day.

John Entwistle’s Buzzard Bass

The Ox played the iconic Buzzard Bass for the final 17 years of his career from 1985 to his untimely passing in 2002. Entwistle worked with Hans Peter Wilfer, founder of Warwick basses, on the striking bass and the pair came up with the moniker Buzzard after imbibing numerous drinks at London nightclub Maggie's – neither could remember who first suggested the name. After they picked the name, the headstock was tweaked to resemble the beak of a buzzard.

John Fogerty’s Baseball Bat Guitar

Crafted by Philip Kubicki, John Fogerty named his unique guitar 'Slugger' in homage to the Louisville Slugger baseball bat. Created in 1985 when his album 'Centerfield' came out, Fogerty donated the instrument to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in 2010. Fogerty said at the time: "That guitar means a lot to me. It's symbolizes two of my great loves, baseball and the guitar. When 'Centerfield' came out, it was after a long break and was such an important album to me on many levels. The lessons of baseball - the hits, the misses, the triumphs, and the losses - were something that I could really relate to in my life. So I got this idea to make a baseball bat guitar and of course, it had to be a Louisville Slugger."

Ian Hunter’s Maltese Cross Guitar

Ian Hunter's Maltese Cross Guitar was designed by American luthier Harvey Thomas in the 1970s. Despite its iconic status, Hunter says the guitar looked good but didn't sound great and he sold it a number of years ago. Def Leppard and Planet Rock's Joe Elliott had two new Maltese Crosses made for Hunter's 70th birthday in 2009 that Hunter says sounded "GREAT!" Hunter says: "There are only two in the world. I think it's really neat that a guitar can look that good AND sound so good. Very cool!! Praise be to Joe!!!"

Bumblefoot’s Vigier Flying Foot guitar

As the name suggests, Bumblefoot's Vigier Flying Foot features a pink foot on the guitar body complete with wings that pop out. Bumblefoot says of his beloved instrument: "Vigier spent 5 months building this guitar by hand - it's truly a masterpiece. Incredible detail on the guitar, down to the toenails. When you bend down the vibrato bar, wings pop out of the sides. They gave me this guitar at the NAMM convention in Los Angeles, January 1998. Plays and sounds the best of all my guitars - it's my main guitar."

George Lynch’s Mom

Influential Lynch Mob and ex-Dokken axeman George Lynch unveiled his skull and bones guitar – affectionately called 'Mom' – in the mid 1980s. Designed and hand-crafted by artist John 'J. Frog' Garcia, the guitar also featured an ESP Guitars decal on the headstock as Lynch was contracted with them at the time.

Andrew WK’s Taco Guitar

Hard partying rocker Andrew WK unveiled a delicious Taco Guitar to mark National Taco Day on 4th October 2017. His second foray into food-themed instruments following his Pizza Guitar a few years earlier, the custom Taco Guitar was created with ESP Guitars. WK said at the time: "I realised that since I had paid tribute to pizza, I now had to pay tribute to tacos in all their glory. I was destined to make a taco shaped guitar. This is proof that if you have the vision, no matter how outlandish or unruly, the team at ESP Guitars can turn it into a beautiful reality. And they only use the highest quality materials and they're truly master craftsmen. Absolutely mind-blowing attention to detail and playability. There's no compromise when it comes to the integrity of the instrument, or the hardness of the party."

Misa Kitara Guitar Shaped MIDI Controller

Not technically a guitar, the Misa Kitara was a short-lived digital MIDI controller and musical instrument that was developed on 2011 and discontinued just two years later. Taking its name from the Finnish word for guitar (kitara), the instrument combined touch buttons for strings and frets with an 8-inch multi-touch screen that creates a variety of sound effects. Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme can be seen playing a modified Misa Kitara in the video to the band's 2012 song 'Madness.'

Dave Hill’s Super Yob Guitar

Famed for his outrageous costumes and hilarious haircut, it seemed only right that Slade axeman Dave Hill had a unique and eccentric guitar. Created by luthier John Birch in 1973, the Super Yob was styled after a science fiction ray gun and instantly became synonymous with Dave Hill. Guitarist and songwriter Marco Pirroni bought the original Super Yob in the early eighties, but Hill has since had a replica made.

John 5’s Fender Telecaster Lava Lamp Guitar

John 5 has a number of eye-catching guitars in his arsenal, but the Fender Telecaster Lava Lamp Guitar is arguably the standout instrument of the lot. John 5 says: "It's heavy as hell but it's really cool because it lights up on stage… it weighs a ton! It sounds really good. There's anti-freeze in it because when I ship it abroad it might freeze and crack the guitar."

Ginger Wildheart’s Smiley Bones Guitar

Based on The Wildhearts' fearsome logo, this truly phenomenal Smiley Bones Guitar was created in 2015 by Devil & Sons Guitars. Daniel Wallis made the guitar for Ginger Wildheart to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 'P.H.U.Q.' album as a replacement for the original guitar which came out when the album was released but was later stolen. He explains to Planet Rock: "I sent some images of it to Ginger who loved it but asked if I could make a few changes so it met a perfect spec for him to play live. Instead of making the changes I just made another so there were in fact two that I made. Part of his spec was to have a particular BC Rich neck put on it, which I did, but then he decided that to play it live it would be better with a 24-fret neck, so I made that change too."

Zakk Wylde’s Epiphone Graveyard Disciple guitar

Ozzy Osbourne and Black Label Society axeman Zakk Wylde with one of this Epiphone Graveyard Disciple signature guitars on stage in 2009. Nicknamed the 'Bo Deadly' by Zakk, the Graveyard Disciple comes in a coffin shaped case and features a crucifix on the body and headstock. Nice.

Eric Bloom’s Blue Öyster Cult Logo Guitar

We couldn't do this list without including Eric Bloom's famed guitar shaped like the Blue Öyster Cult logo. The bespoke guitar was created by master luthier Ronaldo at Pastore's Music in Union City, New Jersey. In case you're wondering, the logo was created by Bill Gawlik, the artist behind BOC's first and second album covers, and it's a stylization of the astronomical symbol for the planet Saturn.

Bootsy Collins’ Star-Shaped Space Bass

The flamboyant James Brown and Parliament-Funkadelic bassist's first Star-Shaped Space Bass was created in 1975 by fledgling guitar maker Larry Pless who worked at an accordon shop called Gus Zoppi Music in Warren, Michigan. Since then there have been numerous incarnations of the Star-Shaped Space Bass, including Bootsy's current signature Warwick star basses, but the basic design has stayed the same.

Brian May’s Red Special Guitar

Easily one of the most famous guitars in the history of rock music, Brian May created the Red Special with his dad Harold as a teenager in 1963 as he couldn't afford a Fender, Gibson or Höfner guitar. Designed to intentionally create feedback, the guitar has helped define Brian May's signature sound and he's performed almost exclusively with it throughout Queen's prime in the 1970s and 1980s until this present day.

Todd Rundgren's Veleno Ankh Guitar

Todd Rundgren's aluminium ankh-shaped guitar was created by metal craftsman John Veleno in the early 1970s. Highly regarded for their aesthetic appearance and also distinct playing style, a series of Velono guitars were made for a number of artists. Rundgren loved his so much, he had two made.

The Dean V Dave Mustaine Double Neck Electric Guitar

Dave Mustaine's bespoke double neck guitar, created by Dean, has been one of his main instruments for the past decade. Thanks to its jagged shape and the metal artwork emblazoned on the body, the guitar is an absolute aesthetic triumph – a behemoth of an instrument that suits Megadeth's brutal music perfectly.

Rob Davis’ Heart-Shaped Guitar

Mud guitarist Rob Davis played his famous red heart-shaped guitar during the glam rockers' commercial peak in the 1970s and he still performs with it to this very day. Here he is proudly flaunting the guitar in a promo shoot with Mud almost five decades ago.

Prince’s yellow ‘Cloud’ Guitar

Late music legend Prince had an extensive and highly flamboyant custom guitar collection consisting of more than 100 instruments. Among the standout instruments was Prince's yellow "Cloud" guitar, which sold for $225,000 under the hammer in 2018.

Rick Nielsen’s Uncle Dick

A prolific collector, Rick Nielsen has amassed over 2,000 guitars over the decades. Alongside his trademark Five Neck (also pictured here), arguably the most famous of the bunch is his Hamer 'Uncle Dick' double neck guitar from 1983, which is based on a likeness of himself.

Michael Angelo Batio’s Quad Guitar

As seen in the video to his 2020 song 'Time Traveller', Michael Angelo Batio also invented the Quad-Guitar, which features – you guessed it – two sets of twin-neck V-shaped guitars. Outrageous yet highly impressive!

Lita Ford’s B.C. Rich Monkey Train guitar

The former Runaways rocker unveiled her train-themed B.C. Rich Monkey Train guitar in her 'Playin' With Fire' official video in 1991. Lita told Guitar Afficionado a few years back: "I got into B.C. Rich. I was always over there carving out new ideas and helping to make new stuff. They would make anything I asked them to make."

James Hetfield’s Carl Guitar

In 2018, James Hetfield proudly showed off his unique new guitar – dubbed Carl – to Metallica fans. The rugged instrument is named after 3132 Carlson Boulevard in El Cerrito, California, where Metallica were based during their breakthrough years from 1983 to 1986. The garage was later demolished but James's friend Andy Anderson of the Bay Area thrash group Attitude Adjustment kept eight pieces of wood from the heavy metal landmark and gifted them to him years later. Papa Het then enlisted the services of master custom guitar maker Ken Lawrence to craft him an instrument using those planks of wood. Carl featured on Metallica's WorldWired World Tour where it was used for performances of 'Hardwired… to Self-Destruct' track 'Moth Into Flame.'

Dan Hartman’s Bass Suit

Unfortunately, we've been unable to acquire an image of the late Dan Hartman's Bass Suit but there's no way we can miss it out! The Edgar Winter Group bassist and solo musician paid a reported $5,000 for the suit in 1974 (huge money at the time), which he designed with Los Angeles couturier Bill Witten. Made from a rubbery fabric that featured the instrument in the pelvic pocket, the Bass Suit's controls are on the sleeve attached to an aluminium plate and the guitar neck ends with a crescent moon.

Stig Pederson’s iPhone Bass

Stig Pedersen, bassist/vocalist of Danish rock band D-A-D, has a number of outlandish bass creations that he performs with including a rocket shaped bass, a reverse bass where the head stock and body are swopped around, and a transparent bass. He hit the headlines in 2018 when he unveiled his latest playful creation – a bass shaped like an iPhone.

The Pretty Reckless are thrilled to return to the road this spring with more than three dozen shows across the US, Europe, and the UK.

The extensive outing, which marks their first run of dates since 2016–2017’s  Who You Selling For  tour, kicks off with a pair of sold out headline shows at Brooklyn Made on March 22 and 23. On April 1, the New York City band embarks on a 24-date run across North America with Shinedown, before heading across the Atlantic for shows throughout the summer, including festival appearances at Britain’s Download Festival, Germany’s Rock im Park and Rock am Ring, and the Netherlands’ Pinkpop as well as direct support to Foo Fighters in Berlin. The Pretty Reckless’ long-awaited tour follows the release of their No. 1-debuting and fourth studio album,  Death By Rock And Roll .

Get tickets here .

Ahead of the tour, one of the band’s most popular titles,  Going To Hell,   will return to vinyl.

The album, which includes three No. 1 singles, including the platinum-selling “ Heaven Knows ,” “ Messed Up World ,” and “ Follow Me Down ,” lands in stores on February 11, 2022, and is  available for pre-order today .

Fans can also visit the  band’s official website  to find two exclusive color variants, pressed on purple marble and purple splatter vinyl, respectively. A solid purple vinyl variant will also be available  exclusively in independent record stores .

Originally released in 2014,  Going To Hell  marks the second studio album from The Pretty Reckless, which consists of  Taylor Momsen (lead vocals, rhythm guitar),  Ben Phillips (lead guitar, backing vocals), Mark Damon (bass), and Jamie Perkins (drums). Following the release of 2010’s  Light Me Up , plus nearly two years of non-stop touring, the band entered Hoboken, New Jersey’s Water Music with producer Kato Khandwala (Paramore, Blondie, My Chemical Romance). But Hurricane Sandy had other ideas. In October 2012, the storm raged through the Eastern Seaboard, destroying the studio and forcing the group to re-record much of their new material. The album’s title track chronicled the devastating period.

Despite the initial setbacks, the band released their sophomore album in March 2014 to massive commercial success.  Going To Hell  debuted at No.5 on the  Billboard  200, marking The Pretty Reckless’ first Top 10 album on the chart. Abroad, the LP fared equally as well, debuting at No.8 in the UK and No. 5 in Canada.  Going To Hell  was also embraced by the press, with  Rolling Stone  raving that the album “rages with the upbeat, beat-wise humor that hard rock has suppressed ever since grunge.”  Revolver  praised, “Momsen leaves most chick rockers in her rearview mirror thanks to her greatest assets — her daring arrangements and well-crafted tunes” while  Kerrang!   declared, “If Taylor is indeed going to Hell, at least she’s released a truly great album on the way down.”

The album also spawned several best-selling singles, including the anthemic “Heaven Knows,” the rollicking “Follow Me Down,” and the guitar-driven earworm “Messed Up World.” All three songs topped  Billboard ‘s Mainstream Rock Songs chart, while just two years later, the band set the record for the most No. 1 singles on the chart by a female-fronted band, thanks to “Take Me Down” (off 2016’s  Who You Selling For ). The Pretty Reckless continued to defend their title with the release of their latest LP, which delivered three more No.1 hits: title track “ Death By Rock And Roll ,” “ And So It Went ” (Feat. Tom Morello), and “ Only Love Can Save Me Now ” (Feat. Kim Thayil and Matt Cameron of Soundgarden).

Released in February,  Death By Rock And Roll  found the band reeling after two tragic deaths. The first was Soundgarden frontman, Chris Cornell, who tragically passed away while on tour with The Pretty Reckless. The second was the band’s longtime collaborator, Kato Khandwala, whose signature phrase inspired the album’s title. The album, which paid homage to both men, allowed the group to process their grief while taking a more vulnerable and reflective tone in their writing. Marking The Pretty Reckless’  Fearless Records debut,  Death By Rock And Roll  was welcomed warmly by audiences and critics alike — debuting at No.1 on several charts including  Billboard ’s Top Album Sales chart and earning glowing reviews from a variety of outlets, including  PEOPLE!, V Magazine,  and  SPIN,  who hailed the album as “a stunner; a dozen stellar songs that are at once reverential, referential and intensely personal.”

THE PRETTY RECKLESS

Support: the cruel knives.

The Pretty Reckless’ unbelievable journey has quietly brought them from sweaty small gigs to successive number one hits, platinum plaques, and some of the biggest stages in the world—unprecedented for a rock act this century.

The Pretty Reckless formed in New York City during 2008, and the musicians and late producer Kato Khandwala initially made waves with their 2010 debut Light Me Up. After countless gigs, the band returned with “Going To Hell” in 2014. Not only did the record crash the Top 5 of the Billboard Top 200, but it also ignited three #1 hits — the Platinum-certified “Heaven Knows” (the biggest rock song of 2014), “Fucked Up World,” and “Follow Me Down” — a feat that had not been accomplished by a female-fronted group since The Pretenders in 1984. Meanwhile, their third offering, “Who You Selling For”, saw them return to #1 on the Mainstream Rock Songs Chart with “Take Me Down”, which cemented them as “the first band to send its first four singles to #1 on the chart”, according to Billboard. Praise followed from Vogue, Nylon, and more, as the quartet lit up television shows such as Letterman and Conan. With over half-a-billion streams, they headlined countless sold out shows and toured with Guns N’ Roses, Soundgarden, and many other heavy hitters. Fourth album “Death By Rock And Roll” was released in February 2021 via Fearless Records in the US and Century Media for the rest of the world. Upon release, the record topped multiple sales charts — including Billboard’s Top Albums, Rock, Hard Music, and Digital Charts. The record also yielded several No. 1 singles — “Death By Rock And Roll”, “And So It Went” (Feat. Tom Morello), and “Only Love Can Save Me Now” (Feat. Matt Cameron + Kim Thayil) all topped the charts. The Pretty Reckless are also the first female-fronted band to have back-to-back No. 1 singles at the active rock format and they are the first female-fronted act to have seven No. 1 singles on the Billboard Rock Radio Chart, a feat achieved with “Only Love Can Save Me Now”. The album was universally praised by PEOPLE, V, The TODAY Show, The Daily Beast, Hypebae, SPIN, Rolling Stone, Bustle, Women’s Wear Daily, Loudwire, and more.

2021 saw them return with their lauded fourth studio album, “Death by Rock and Roll” and they sound more alive than ever…

The band then head to mainland Europe for dates in the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and France.

Taylor and Ben turned to writing to channel the emotional toll and, in late 2018, The Pretty Reckless returned to the studio to record their fourth album with the sessions lasting over a year.

“ We stuck to our ethics ,” explains Taylor. “ We built this up over a long time. Either you throw it all away or you go for it. It’s cliched, but rock and roll saved our lives .”

The Pretty Reckless are a four piece hard rock band hailing from New York City, US, featuring the vocal and guitar talents of actress Taylor Momsen.

Best known for her role in the TV series "Gossip Girl," Taylor Momsen also formed The Pretty Reckless in 2009, playing alongside Mark Damon (bass), Jamie Perkins (drums) and Ben Phillips (lead guitar, backing vocals). The band play a brand of hard rock influenced by the likes of Nirvana, Joan Jett Hole that is very accessible.

Their debut album "Light Me Up" (released August 27, 2010) achieved moderate success, most notably with the single "Make Me Wanna Die." Following this album release they embarked on an international tour, also featuring as part of the line up for the Vans Warped Tour. Following this success, they were invited to perform as the support act for Marilyn Manson and Evanescence, which helped to establish new fans and grow The Pretty Reckless' popularity.

Their second studio album "Going to Hell" released in 2014 saw the band achieve a new level of success. The singles "Kill Me," "Going to Hell" and "Heaven Knows" were well received, with "Heaven Knows" topping both the UK and US rock charts. The Pretty Reckless achieved a number one spot with two of their first hit singles "Heaven Knows" and "Messed Up World," the first time a female-fronted band has done so. The band also had a song featured on the "Kick-Ass" soundtrack, with the single, "Make Me Wanna Die."

Live reviews

Somebody mixed my medicine.' Guess whose 'in my head again'? Pretty Reckless--the world's greatest American rock band of this generation. These days in the 21st century, rock artists are mixing with soul country or mainstream pop, trying to be something they're not. But Pretty Reckless doesn't swing like that. They allow real, hardcore, bloody rock and roll to live on in their own twisted, addicting ways.

Their 'Light Me Up' album did more than just set my passion on fire for these talented members. Ben Phillips stellar guitar skills ignited my inner rock (I still pretend to do mini guitar solos alone in my bedroom) and Taylor Momsen's raspy, edgy voice sends thrilling chills up my spine that I crave for everyday. You can never forget the heart pumping bass from Mark Damon and the mad drumming from Jamie Perkins. When they work together to create such masterpieces like 'F*cked Up World' and 'Medicine' that are dubbed into my iPod, I fangirl enough to 'Make Me Wanna Die'.

When they had their first chart-topping single, 'Heaven Knows', I would seriously be surprised if heaven DIDN'T know Pretty Reckless. 'Going To Hell', their newest album, is glued on repeat to this day. In the album, the way that the band adds good old rock, blends of heavy metal and even some slower songs that show the ability of Momesen to produce a successful combination that conveys both emotion and adrenaline is mind blowing.

Which is exactly what Pretty Reckless is. Mind blowing.

And to think, what are their concerts like exactly? It makes you feel like you're living the impossible, whether it be a 'Zombie' or breathing 'Under the Water', seeing them live will make you question yourself--can this century still offer REAL rock and roll at a concert? The answer is yes. It's The Pretty Reckless, a badass band that I've fallen hard in love with. Flashing lights, surrounding smoke, rock lovers swarming like a sea around you, the floor shaking with bouncing feet, ears ringing from the smashing beats, and the chills up your arm because of Momsen's voice--the perfect concert.

Now if you still don't believe that The Pretty Reckless is one of the greatest American rock bands of the century, why not give them a shot. Plug in your headphones, lean back, close your eyes and sink into The Pretty Reckless's world of madness. Listen to their lyrics. Feel the beat. Take a minute for the spell to take over. Besides, you have 'Nothing Left To Lose'.

THE PRETTY RECKLESS -

Amazing. That about sums it up. Despite jet lag, which they made a bit of fun with, they had lots of energy and were clearly enjoying themselves. They were enthusiastic and happy to be there, and kept relaying that in some way shape or form, lots of thanking people for being there.

There was a good mix of songs from across the albums and they had taken note of the most asked for song in general from their fans and included it, which was Just Tonight.

There was a downside. And it was NOT The Pretty Reckless' fault.

ROCK CITY NOTTINGHAM -

I hope TPR never go there again. I only went to Nottingham because Manchester was sold out when I was looking (all UK dates sold out btw), and I'll probably never go again.

They kept the audience standing outside for an extra 30 minutes - no info as to why.

Once inside, they pumped freezing cold air from the AC onto everyone (after being stood out in January weather) - did not act on audience asking to shut it off, or seem to care that people had scarves over their face, hats/hoods on, couldn't take their coats off and were shaking - despite huddled in a crowd.

And then the WORST thing - which directly affected TPR - was that they made them cut their set, and pretty much forced them off the stage. They told them between songs, and TPR told us they had to cut songs because the venue wanted to open their night club (at this point it was 9.30pm ish). The venue got boo'd, and to TPR credit they were pros about it.

But they did two more songs that they picked to finish with instead, and had to make a hasty exist. And when the unhappy crowd refused to move, Rock City turned the lights on and started dismantling the set. It was just before 10pm. For a rock show. In a venue that claims to be the UKs leading venue for music.

When we got outside, there was maybe 20 people stood waiting to go into the night club. 20 people, over a SOLD OUT show. That's the way they treat their guests and the fans that come to see them.

SO ALL IN ALL -

The Pretty Reckless were GREAT, PROFESSIONAL, ENTHUSIASTIC, INTERACTIVE and AWESOME.

Rock City Nottingham were RUDE, UNPROFESSIONAL and just RUBBISH.

But can't wait to see TPR again - and I hope (and doubt they will) receive the same treatment from their other dates.

Great show, really put some effort in, and my daughter (who discovered this band for me) totally loved it. Only 1 1/2 hours long for the headline act, but for a band with only a couple of albums that's forgiveable, and with TWO support bands it was plenty late enough anyway! Wish there'd been time to fit in My Medicine to the setlist.

But what was with the light show? Don't get me wrong, I've no problem with doing something interesting with the lights - but the lighting designer here I think believed it was primarily a light show, with some music to accompany it. More annoyingly, all the lights were on the stage, and facing out into the audience, including some MAJORLY bright strobes.

Surely at least one of the functions of the lights is to enable the audience to see the band? In this case, the audience was mostly blinded by the lights shining straight at them, while the band stood in shadows. Fail.

Still, the packed audience was in a great mood, and enjoyed the show from start to finish, including both support bands.

Speaking of whom, Nothing More were... OK. A bit too much like being just noise, and with experimental bits, for me, but that's just my taste. Top marks for effort, especially the singer, and the cool drum thing in the last song. Heaven's Basement were much more enjoyable, with a hint of pop catchy-ness but the rawness and noise you need, I'll have to check out their recorded stuff.

I have been suffering from my spinal injury. I have noted it several times to the lead singer Taylor Momsen online this year. I was in a lot of pain and canceled 2 flights to Virginia on April 26th. I did not make it to the concert and I have no idea what they are like in person performing live. Heartbreak from missing concerts has become overwhelming. As a very devoted fan to The Pretty Reckless amazing rock music, I can only say that I truly hate online social fan sites and clubs across the ocean and into London. Fans are haters of new fans and good music. Love of a singers hot body is disgusting to hear about over and over from nasty old men who are crude and married and want a cheap fling. I love music and travel and big concerts and tours with good friends. I do not care for everything that has gone wrong this year with lack of communication and intolerance to my great endurance with coping well with my own ADHD and good morals and good work ethics and extremely tender heart. This was the 3rd concert I have missed of The Pretty Reckless. I have tried so hard and nobody supports my efforts in any form across the country. The show was good, hopefully? I may never hear the reality of that one.

Taylor Momsen's voice was even more haunting live, to a point where it was almost hypnotic. You definitely get more impact from their live performances; it seemed to have a lot more soul behind it than their studio work.

We had a running joke that it was Elvis Presley and Slash on the guitars (which it was not...obviously). Their performance was pristine and succinct.

Crowd interaction was relatively null at the start but sometimes that's a good thing. Take Billy Joel, for instance (whom I love), who talks waaay too much between each song. There was a few "What's up, Bristol?"s. Throughout most of the performance, Taylor kept her hair over her face, which was a bit of a shame because you want to be able to see your performers whilst they perform, particularly beautiful ones, such as Taylor.

I'm so glad I went; I've been wanting to see them for years and it was DEFINATELY satisfactory! I also took a friend for her (belated) 18th birthday present and at one point she exclaims "I'm having such a good time, I nearly pissed myself!".

All in all, a very good night in a great, nice-sized venue.

Taylor Momsen is an entertainer in all the right ways. From the moment she started, she took control of the energy, of the whole show. She acknowledges the crowd repeatedly, making it not just any show by just a band. She takes a backstage when the time is right, and she goes up front when the time is right, timing wise, it was spectacular.

The music the band performed, coupled with Taylor's energy and command of the stage made every song performed, for the lack of a better word, magical. So much so that it leaves the audience (namely me, at least) wanting more of the live session of their songs, whereas studio cuts just don't seem the same after a live show by the Pretty Reckless.

I'd recommend The Pretty Reckless live to anyone out there wondering.

I've seen them 3 times now and they are always awesome. I just saw them with Nickelback and I think TPR got screwed by the organizers of the event. They were forced to up tempo their songs so they could get done with their set in 45 minutes! A band of their quality should not get fucked like that! Nickelback put on a great show as well and I don't fault them for the idiot organizers screw up. I have been listening to TPR since they started and know every song they have and how it's geared and I think they should can their agent if he ever sets them up with something like this again! TPR is a high quality band and should be headlining not the warm up band! Jus' sayin'!

I went to their concert in Utrecht. And this is by far the best concert I've been to. The set list was great, because there were songs of every album, which made it worth the 2,5 years I waited to go to their concert. And can we talk about Taylors voice?! Omg it sounds so good live, very raw and just like you are listening to the album on your phone or whateve. And lets not forget the amazing guitar riffs, god!!

The opening act did also great! I hope to see more of them. Too bad I didn't take a photo because I would lose my spot in the crowd. But yeah, you guys should definitely go to their concert!!

Solid opening acts. Each better than the next. Pretty Reckless were solid. Taylor's voice was good and the band as a whole played spirited versions of the recordings. Her voice was washed away by the instruments sometimes though. She asa lead needs to OWN her role as leader. She spends a lot of time with her head down. ROCK OUT sister. Work the crowd with the song better. Pointing the mic at the crowd isn't enough. LOOK like you are having fun. Its rock and roll and your stage.

brett-grossmann’s profile image

Good show! TPR had a very tight set with good pacing and song choices. They didn't hit all the favorites, but if they had they wouldn't have space for the new album stuff they're touring in support of. Short break before the single song encore, but that may have been H.O.B./ Disney policy rather than band preference. Of course this is a blitz tour schedule for them, so who knows.

Bottom line: This was my first time seeing TPR live, but it won't be the last.

LIVE REVIEW: The Pretty Reckless, The Cruel Knives, Barrowlands, Glasgow, 26/10/2022

It’s ironic this tour is called the Death by Rock N’ Roll tour as on this evidence the genre we love isn’t just alive and well, it’s thriving, exciting and the white-hot centre of the musical universe.

Death By Rock N’ Roll  is also of course the name of The Pretty Reckless’ fourth record and a release which frontwoman Taylor Momsen credits with not just saving the band, but even saving her life. Momsen has openly admitted she spiralled into a pit of depression and substance abuse after a series of losses and death close to her – especially that of long-time producer Kato Khandwala . “I’d given up and didn’t see a reason to move forward,” Momsen has admitted on record. But Momsen turned to song-writing to help her through the day. It worked and she began to see light at the end of the tunnel and the record saved her life. “If you hang on a little longer life will sort itself out and it will turn around,” she said of the record.

And now Momsen and the rest of the band are here to save Rock n’ Roll – and we at Bring The Noise UK were part of a sold out, stack ‘em to the rafters, venue bursting at the seams, raucous and horns in the air crowd at Glasgow’s iconic Barrowlands Ballroom for the Scottish stop on the band’s European tour. Former teenage acting superstar and IT girl of the silver screen, Momsen is a rock n’ roll force of nature. Equal parts Stevie Nicks and Courtney Love , she is the kind of frontwoman you simply can’t take your eyes off. She dominates the stage with her raspy vocals serenading the crowd which surges forward on her every word as she leads the band through a set list with more bangers than Guy Fawkes had in 1605.

We managed to bob, weave and inch our way towards the front just before the band blasted through their set opener which was – naturally – Death By Rock N’ Roll – the title track of their 2022 hit-heavy album. In between songs the roar of approval from her Scottish fans is ear-splitting and the grunge goddess even allows the hint of a smile to creep across her face as the band crank into Since You’re Gone next which they follow with Only Love Can Save Me Now, Goin’ Down, and And So It Went .

Make Me Wanna Die  is next and it produces an epic sing-a-long, karaoke session of thousands crooning the lyrics back to Momsen and her band of merry men. Sweet Things, Witches Burn, My Medicine and My Bones follow next with no slowly of the rock n’ roll throttle. This is balls-to-the-wall, pedal-to-the-metal, hold-onto-your-ass and utterly glorious. Momsen is using every inch of the Barrowlands stage, swaggering and prowling from right to left and then back again but all the while keeping the 2,000 strong crowd cupped in the basket of her hand.

Going To Hell keeps the pace up before Heaven Knows slows things down briefly for another anthemic sing-a-long and back and forth between band and fan. The set ends with Take Me Down as Momsen sings: “You know I gave my life to rock ‘n roll” you know it is a lyric steeped in truth and it hits harder and deeper knowing how true it is.

The lights go up and the traditional chant for: ‘ One more song’ follows before the lights drop and the band reappear for their encore which is a lengthy drum solo by Jamie Perkins before the entire band hit the stage to wave to the beaming crowd and bask in the glory of a set which will live long in them memory of all who were lucky enough to attend. 10/10.

AC/DC Announce The Pretty Reckless as Opener on 2024 European Tour

On May 17, AC/DC will kick off their first tour since 2016 and they’ve just announced the opening band for the European run.

The Pretty Reckless have been tabbed as special guests for the 21 dates ahead, as announced this morning (March 25) on AC/DC’s social media pages .

About The Pretty Reckless

The Pretty Reckless formed in 2009 and have released four full length albums: Light Me Up (2010), Going to Hell (2014), Who You Selling For (2016) and Death by Rock and Roll (2021). They’re currently working on a new record, titled Other Worlds , which is expected sometime this year.

Fronted by Taylor Momsen , the band solidified themselves among the biggest new acts in rocks throughout the 2010s, with enduring hits in “Heaven Knows,” “Make Me Wanna Die” and the title track from their last release.

The group was also the support act for Soundgarden on what was ultimately their last tour with Chris Cornell , who took his own life during the run.
