It’s a 10 mins ride to reach this beautiful place in Ella. The waterfall flows in between the littles Adams Peak and the Ella Rock . The height of the water wall is around 82 feet which cascade down over an oval-shaped rock.

The Ravana Waterfall was named in memory of King Ravana who was once the most technologically advanced king based on historical Information. King Ravana hid Princess Sita in the Ravana Caves right Behind the Waterfall. This is based on prehistoric information and the Ramayana Story. There are plenty of Coffee sellers for you to warm you up in the cold weather conditions on your journey to Haputale.

So, the journey begins from Haputale on a bus to Wellawaya and you will have to get down at Koslanda Junction. Next, hire a tuk-tuk to the Diyaluma falls. Or you can simply hire a rent a car for the whole journey. The best part is that you can ask the tuk-tuk drivers to take you to watch the elephants who come to drink water from the upper deck of the Diyaluma falls.

Tuk-tuk drivers will drop you at the Poonagala estate where you will have to go through a trek. The estate is famous for its rubber and the breath-taking view is one of a kind. And you will surely enjoy the journey to the falls even though you find some rocky places on the way. Once you continue the journey for about 45 minutes you will reach the Upper Diyaluma.

Lipton’s seat.

Once the great tea planter Sir Thomas Lipton used to sit and observe his pride from the Lipton Seat. You can easily observe the Dambatenna tea estate and as far as Hambantota Harbor in the Southern Coastal belt from Lipton Seat. Try to visit the point of observation in the morning to get the best view.

It is one of the best-elevated viewpoints in Sri Lanka situated along the Haputale road in the Badulla District. Lipton Seat is in the Dambatenna tea factory. You will be able to observe a breath-taking view from the Lipton’s Seat where once the great tea planter Sir Thomas Lipton used to observe his plantation.

It’s a journey of around 7 km through the beautiful tea estate of Dambatenna to reach Lipton Seat or you can come through Nayabedda estate in Bandarawela. There are plenty of signs which will help you to reach the point of the Lipton Seat. In some parts of the route you will be able to observe the original paving stones that were used during the British time period to construct the road. The journey to the place will be roughly around 2 to 3 hours but it will not be a tiring journey to reach the point of observation.

Once you reach the famous Lipton Seat then you will be able to view Sabaragamuwa, Uva, Central and Eastern provinces where you can easily view them from the point of observation. In addition to that Udawalawe Lake, Chandrika Lake and the Handapangala Lake can be observed on a clear day when there is no mist surrounding the mountain ranges. Adisham bungalow.

Sir Thomas Lister Villiers an English planter who worked at the George Stuarts Tea Industry built the Adisham Bungalow in 1931. Now the Monastery is owned by the Benedictine Monks. At the bungalow make sure to taste the Jam and the Cordial made in the orchards of the Adisham Bungalow.

It is one of the best British Colonial Houses that is well preserved up to date, situated near Haputhale in the Badulla District. The history of the Adisham Monastery goes way back to the time period between 1928 to 1948. Currently, the Adisham Monastery is owned by the Benedictine Monks and it is opened for the public only on the weekends, public and school holidays.

The scenic beauty will make you fall in love with the beautiful monastery surrounded by the flower beds and the orchards with a variety of fruits and vegetables. Towards the side of the monastery is a thick dense forest with a bird sanctuary called Thangamale Sanctuary. The Bungalow will be opened from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm. However, to embrace the beauty of the monastery and the weather, its better you visit the place early in the morning.

Sir Thomas Lister Villiers an English planter came to Sri Lanka in a ship that transport Tea in 1827. As a young lad, he was working at the George Stuarts Tea Industry when he commenced building the Adisham bungalow in 1931. Once Sir Thomas Lister Villiers retired from service the ownership of the Adisham Bungalow was taken over by the Sedawatte mills in 1951. Again in 1961 Roman Catholic Church purchased the bungalow in 1961 which converted the Bungalow into a Monastery.

There are many Orchards around the Adisham Monastery maintained by the Benedictine Monks. With the helping hand of the villages around the monastery the monks have cultivated Oranges, Guavas, Strawberries and Vegetables.

The locals and the tourist who come to visit the Monastery can purchase Jam, Chutney and different types of Cordials made in the Monastery. There are 100% natural and no artificial adhesives have been used in the preparation of these products. The income from these organic products are used to maintain the Bungalow. However, if you forget to purchase these products then you can purchase them from the Sacred Heart Church in Rajagiriya, Colombo.

Bambarakanda falls.

It is the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka which flows through the mountain range of Kalupahana. The height of the waterfall is approximately 863 feet and it is ranked as the 299th tallest waterfall in the world. Bambarakanda Falls is a branch of Kuda Oya which later joins the Walawe River.

There are many ways that you can use to reach the Bambarakanda waterfall. The best way is to take the Balangoda to Badulla Route. This is also known as the A4 Highway that leads to Kalupahana Junction. Then follow the signboards along the road for at least 3.5 km or you can try out with a vehicle that has good ground clearance. The road to Bambarakanda Falls is quite narrow and the road has not been renovated. Therefore, the best way is to travel by foot.

Bambarakanda Falls is one of the best places for photography and hikers. There is a trail that will lead to the upper deck of the waterfall. There is a large basin on the top of the fall, which is connected with the waterfall. Even though it looks safe there might be a sudden rise in the water level. Therefore, the tourist and the locals are to keep an eye on the rising water levels. The best months to visit the beautiful waterfall is from March to May when the water levels are low. And it is very dangerous to go near the waterfall between the months of November and February with the heavy rainfall in the hill country.

If you are planning to hike up the waterfall, then make sure that you gear up for the journey. There are leaches in this area which are blood-sucking insects but harmless. With a bit of lime-based solution or concentrated salt solution, you will be able to easily get rid of them.

Also do not forget to visit Lanka Ella falls a hidden waterfall near Bamabrakanda falls. You can take the trail near the bottom of the Bamabrakanda to reach this hidden beauty.

Dunhinda falls.

5 km off the Badulla town you will be able to reach the entrance of Dunhinda falls. Dunhinda Falls is around 210 feet high and it is also known as the Bridal Falls as it flows down in the shape of a veil of a Bride. There is a footpath on the side of the waterfall that will lead to the upper deck of the falls.

Dunhinda Falls is another picturesque waterfall that is located 5km off the Badulla Town. The name Dunhinda was given to the waterfall due to the mist that is created by the water stream that flows downwards from the falls. The height of the Dunhinda Falls is around 210 feet. And it is also known as the Bridal Falls as it flows down in the shape of a veil of a Bride. The waterfall flows and joins the Badulu Oya which flows through the Badulla town. There will be a fee for both the locals and the tourist to visit the Dunhinda Falls.

If you are starting your journey from Colombo then the best thing that you can do is to book the Badulla Colombo Night mail train starting from Colombo Fort Station at 8.15 pm. Then throughout the night, the train will slowly rumble to a halt in Badulla around 6.30 am in the morning. You might experience freezing weather conditions. So, don’t forget to sip a hot coffee from a seller on the train.

At 6.30 in the morning you might not find a bus, therefore its better you know how much time it will take you to travel to Dunhinda from Badulla town. If you plan to walk from Badulla to Dunhinda falls you can use Mahiyangana Road which will take you 45 mins to reach Dunhinda. By means of a vehicle, it will take around 15 mins to reach Dunhinda. Else if you plan to hire a bicycle then it will take around 20-30 minutes to reach the Dunhinda falls.

Make sure that you take your camera gear with you to experience the beauty of this wonderful waterfall. It is also a great spot for you to go for a dip if you are planning to visit other places too.

Muthiyangana temple.

It is one of the 16 sacred places in Sri Lanka. The Muthiyanganaya Stupa is 65 feet tall and the diameter is around 270 feet. Muthiyanganaya Raja Maha Viharaya Stupa was erected by enshrining the relics of Load Buddha which includes Mukthaka Dathu and Kesha Dathu by King Indaka.

It is one of the 16 sacred places in Sri Lanka for the Buddhist devotees situated in the Middle of the Badulla Town in Uva Province. It’s not that hard to find the place since you can easily access the Muthiyanganaya Temple by means of bus, tuk-tuk or even by train. This is if you are traveling from Colombo. If you are traveling to Ella you can easily reach the temple which is 20 km away from Ella Rock. The Muthiyanganaya Stupa is 65 feet tall and the diameter is around 270 feet.

History of Muthiyangaya Temple

Load Buddha visited Sri Lanka for the 3rd time with 500 other Arahants as an invitation by the Naga king Maniakkhitha. Then the ruler of the Namunukula Mountain Rage King Indaka invited Load Buddha to visit Badulla. Muthiyanganaya Raja Maha Viharaya Stupa was erected by enshrining the relics of the Load Buddha. This includes Mukthaka Dathu (sweat turned in to pearls) and Kesha Dathu (Hair) by King Indaka. Since then from generation to generation many leaders who ruled the country have reconstructed and renovated the Sacred Muthiyanganaya Temple.

The Temple is also famous for the Dragon Pandol which is also known as the Makara Thorana built in an unverified Era. In addition to that the Archeologists say that there were seven Bo trees at the Temple. However, three of them had vanished with time. The four of the remaining Bo trees are found in the temple. King Devanam Piyatissa has planted the very last Bo Tree at the Muthiyanganaya Temple.

Most of the devotees visit the Muthiyanganaya temple on Poya days. It is best to wear white. Also, make sure that all your clothes are covering your body as a way of paying respect to this sacred place in Badulla.

Madulsima – pitamaruwa mini worlds end.

Towards the end of the Roeberry Estate Plantation where the footpath ends you will experience a sudden drop of 1250 feet. You can observe Kandy, Meegahakiula, Mahiyanganaya, Ampara, Senanayaka reservoir, Monaragala, Passara and Badulla with the directions marked on the plate.

Isolated and neglected but it is the second-best Worlds End in Sri Lanka. You can visit the end of the Roeberry estate plantation where the footpath ends to a sudden drop of 1250 feet. The Worlds End in Hortain Plains is 870 m (2,854 feet). Therefore, you can do the math to do a size comparison of the Madulsima – Pitamaruwa Mini Worlds End.

Once you reach the Passara town then take a turn to the left to the Pitamaruwa Road and you will reach the Passara – Madulsima Road. Reach Elamanna after a journey of around 30 km. And you will come across a place called the Kokagala area. Then, follow the signs. Once you reach the Summer hut a small footpath will be there which will lead you to the Madulsima – Pitamaruwa Mini Worlds End.

The other pathway will lead to the D.S ROCK which was named in memory of Mr. D.S Senanayake.

There are a couple of summer huts on the way and you can take a short break if you feel exhausted in your journey to reach the World’s End. It is one of a kind breaths taking views. And you might feel that you are given wings to look down at the beauty of the land over the clouds. Tourists and the locals are advised not to look down the abyss. Because sudden gush of wind might push you down the world’s end to an endless journey in your life. So be cautious when you try to observe from the viewpoint of Madulsima – Pitamaruwa Mini Worlds End.

Once you reach the Madulsima – Pitamuruwa World’s End you will be able to see Kandy, Meegahakiula, Mahiyanganaya, Ampara, Senanayaka reservoir, Monaragala, Passara and Badulla. The directions marked on the plate will make it easy to find different cities. On your way to the World’s End you will be able to visit Metigahatenna falls, which is located close to Ekiriya. Mahiyangana temple.

Mahiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya occupies a significant role in the Buddhist history of Sri Lanka. As history says, the lord Buddha made his first visit to Sri Lanka after 9 months of enlightenment. Lord Buddha had foreseen that Buddhism lasts five thousand years in Sri Lanka. Therefore, he managed the visit for purpose of consecrate Sri Lankan earth from some egregious spirits that caused deadly diseases to innocent people living in Sri Lanka. Among that journey, Mahiyangana stupa was created by Yakkas dedicating to the service he has done.

After the great demise of lord Buddha in India, an arahant thera has recovered the funeral pyre from where the lord Buddha cremated. That ash has also brought to Sri Lanka and again enshrined in the Mahiyangana stupa and aggrandize up to 18 feet. Centuries later, king Dutugamunu again renovated the ruined stupa after the war against Tamil king, Elara which has been situated in the territory of the dead king. After that king, Voharaka Thissa and king Sangabhodhi had taken many protective measures for the Mahiyangana Vihara and so on.

Recently, former prime minister Hon. D.S. Senanayaka reconstructed the stupa and in 1961, crystal-cut gems were adorned to the dome of the stupa. It was a gift from the Myanmar government which was ceremonially opened amidst hundreds of devotees in witness. Sorabora lake (Horabora Wewa) located in Mahiyanganaya, Sri Lanka believed to be built in the 2 nd century BC. It’s a huge and one of the most ancient reservoirs made by human hands. The magnificent Nine Arch Bridge between Ella and Demodara station is one of the engineering marvels in the early 20th century. The bridge, which is almost 100 years old, has been built with blocks of stone and cement without any strengthening iron or concrete. The giant arches take the bridge on a curved path to link to mountains. The Bridge was commissioned in 1921 under the British Government.

Muthiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya

Muthiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya is a landmark which will carry you to the time of Buddha. One of the most venerated religious places it is believed that the sacred jaw-bone is placed in the Stupa. Lord Buddha had arrived to Sri Lanka three times after his Enlightenment. Muthiyangana is one of those 3 destinations. At that time there were 3 major tribes in Sri lanka called Deva, Naga and Yaksha. Lord Buddha was invited to visit Badulla by the King of Deva tribes Indaka. Legends say that the Stupa is contained of Buddha’s Sacred hair and Mukthaka Dathu (few drops of sweat which had turned in to pearls). In addition to the history of the temple you will find a beautiful Makara Thorana (Dragon Pandol) at the entrance to the Maha Viharaya. It should be noted that the Muthiyanagana Raja maharya becomes fully crowded with Pilgrims and tourists on Poya Days. It’s better if you can wear full white dresses on the way to the temple and respect Lord Buddha.

Dowa Rock Temple

Dowa Rock temple is one of the essential tourism sites in Badulla, Sri Lanka. Many travelers are attracted to the temple because of its calm and beautiful environment. It is considered as a Buddhist donation which dates back to the King Walagamba era. King Walagamba had so many hiding places to get protection from enemies. Some believe that the Dowa Rock temple is also such a place that used by King Walagamba. A 38 feet uncompleted Buddha statue carved on a rock cliff can be seen in the temple, it can be identified as Mahayana iconography. The paintings in the image house are developed with Kandiyan style. The 38 feet Buddha statue and the beautiful gateway to the temple are the most valuable attractions of the temple. Hence a beautiful river was flown near the temple. But today the river has turned into a stream due to the lack of water resources. Inside the temple you will be see a tunnel which used by king as a secret tunnel.

The hill Stag hill in other names Fox hill is located in Diyatalawa, Sri Lanka. Diyatalawa is a garrison city in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. Mark’s Church, Badulla

The Church was consecrated by Bishop James Chapman on 25 April 1857 in memory of Major Thomas William Rogers, Assistant Government Agent of Uva province. He died in 1845 June 7th under tragic circumstance, struck by lightning at Sherwood estate in Haputale.

1. Dunhinda Falls

Dunhinda Falls is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful waterfalls and also one of the most popular waterfalls in the country . It is not that much of a tall waterfall but the width adds so much magnificence to it. Dunhinda Falls stands majestically close to Badulla hidden away in a jungle. However, in order to see the lovely waterfall, you have to take a small hike through the jungle. It will be an exciting experience to go sightseeing through the jungle and then relax a bit enjoying the beauty of the Dunhinda Falls.

The Badulu river which flows amidst Badulla city forms this waterfall. The name of this waterfall is very interesting. The word ‘Dunhinda’ is the Sinhala term for vapor. It got this name because this 63 meters tall waterfall looks smoky due to the vapors.

The way to the waterfall is also very beautiful as you will be able to enjoy a diversity of flora and fauna on your way. Besides, you have to cross a suspended bridge on your way to Dunhinda Falls.

Apart from that, there are mentions of Dunhinda Falls in several legendary and historical stories as well. For instance, there are beliefs that the area around Dunhinda Falls was once inhabited by Veddas , the Sri Lankan indigenous community.

During the rainy season, from November to March, the waterfall looks its best. But considering the route to the waterfall, it is better if you can visit in the months of June and July to get the best experience. Dunhinda falls is located just 3 kilometers away from Badulla city.

2. Demodara Station

The railway station in Demodara is the third last railway station on the main railway line from Colombo to Badulla. It was built in 1923 and is very popular as a tourist destination among local and foreign tourists.

However, the Demodara loop is what receives the most attention as it is simply a marvel of ancient civil engineering. In the Demodara loop, the railway track passes under itself when going around the mountain. This loop is the only one of its kind on worldwide railway lines. This wonderful construction of the Sri Lankan railway is actually a sight to see.

Besides, there’s an interesting story behind this construction. Sri Lanka’s reputed engineer, Devapura Jayasena Wimalasurendra built the railway line with the help of a farmer’s suggestion to build it in the way a turban is tied.

Moreover, the Demodara railway station is a small colonia l-type architectural building. This small building is located amidst beautiful surroundings. Furthermore, there’s a spectacular view of the railway loop from the railway station.

There is also a small replica of the station and the loop in the station from which you can get an idea of the loop. It will be a fun experience to trek through the railway line. And also you will be able to take some iconic photographs on the way with the Demodara greenery as your background.

Then also, don’t forget to take a train ride as well. The official website of the Sri Lankan Railways will help you to check the train schedule before your visit. It will take around 15 minutes to reach Demodara from Ella by train.

3. Muthiyangana Temple

If you love visiting religious places , then there’s a majestic Buddhist temple in the middle of Badulla city. It is a popular Buddhist center in the country as its history dates back to the 5th century BC. It is also one of the sixteen sacred Buddhist temples of Sri Lanka and is known as the Muthiyangana Temple.

As you may already know, the Lord Buddha visited Sri Lanka after the eighth year of attaining Nirvana. During this visit, he along with 500 Arhats visited Kelaniya and then paid a visit to Badulla. During this visit, he gave sermons in the land where the Muthiyangana stupa is located now. Accordingly, Deva King Indaka built the stupa enshrining the hair and ‘mukthaka dathu’ of the Lord Buddha. Then, there are stories on how the Muthiyangana temple has affiliations with the Indian epic, Ramayana as well.

There are several interesting features of the Muthiyangana temple. First, the thorana at the entrance of the temples is a structure that consists of six levels. It portrays the majesty of the site from the very beginning.

Besides, in the Muthiyangana temple, there are two such image houses. These image houses with ancient paintings are a common feature in this Buddhist temple. There are two statues of Indaka and Maitreya Bodhisattva in these image houses.

However, the most interesting feature of the temple site is the huge stupa with a diameter of 270 feet and a height of 65 feet. Furthermore, there are four sacred Bo trees in the temple complex.

Try to avoid visiting the temple on Poya days as it gets high crowds on Poya days.

4. Old Welekade Market

This is an eye-catching location situated in the middle of the busy Badulla city. The colonial-style building stands out as a unique structure in this city of charms.

The British built this historic building in 1889. At that time, it was used as a commercial trade center. It is also famous as the Dutch market as it carries certain features of Dutch architecture as well. However, the British architectural features dominate the structure.

Old Welekade market is conserved by the Department of Archeology as it is identified as a historically and archaeologically important site. It was designated as such on the 6th of June 2008 under a government gazette. There is also a belief that this is the first public building in the Uva province and the first autonomous market in Sri Lanka.

The structure of the Welekade market takes the shape of a cross. There is also an open space in the middle ground and it is in the shape of an octagon. Further, there are four corridors connecting to this open space. There are wooden pillars supporting the roof and Sinhala clay tiles cover the roof.

This historical building is in close vicinity to the Badulla general hospital on the Badulla-Bandarawela main road.

5. Bogoda Ancient Wooden Bridge

Here’s another historic and extraordinary structure situated very close to Badulla. Bogoda bridge is the oldest wooden bridge in Sri Lanka. According to historical records, this was built in the era of the Dambadeniya Kingdom (1220-1345 AD).

The roof is the most significant feature of the bridge. However, the tiles of the roof have shades of the Kandyan era . Besides, this bridge was initially built only using wood such as Jackfruit logs, Kumbuk logs, Kaluwara timber, and Milla timber. But later, it was repaired with the use of iron nails for its protection. Also, the Archeological Department considers Bogoda’s ancient wooden bridge as a heritage site.

In addition to the bridge, there is an ancient temple right next to the wooden bridge. This Bogoda Raja Maha viharaya is an ancient cave temple. There is an image house in this temple and it is in a natural rock cave.

King Walagamba built this temple in the 1st century BC but the building that you can see today on the premises belongs to the Kandyan era . Furthermore, there is also a tunnel there that connects with a tunnel at the Dowa Raja Maha viharaya on the main Badulla-Bandarawela road.

Bogoda wooden bridge has a distance of around 19 kilometers from Badulla. The closest town to this ancient site is Hali Ela.

6. Halpewatte Tea Factory

Ceylon tea is one of the most reputed brands that Sri Lanka has ever produced. With regard, Badulla holds a special place, as it is known for high-quality tea.

7. Dhowa Rock Temple

Dhowa rock temple is probably the most famous Buddhist temple situated in the Badulla district. It is one of the iconic and unique religious sites in Sri Lanka .

Dhowa Raja Maha Viharaya is also considered a heritage of the country. According to history, it was built by King Walagamba during the 1st century BC. There are several mysterious and legendary stories related to the Dhowa temple. Furthermore, there are many striking and unique features of the Dhowa temple.

However, its most unique feature is the unfinished image of Buddha which is carved into the rock wall. The height of this Buddha image is 38 feet. Apart from that, the temple is also the starting point of an 11 kilometers long tunnel which is believed to be guarded by a cobra. No one is allowed to enter the tunnel today.

There’s an image house in the Dhowa temple which consists of three chambers. There are ancient and colorful sculptures and images related to Buddhism in these chambers. Besides, there is a belief that King Walagamba himself started creating these paintings at the temple. There is also a small stupa and a Bo tree at the temple premises.

So, if you are into religious and historical locations, then the Dhowa rock temple is a must-visit in the Badulla district. It is situated in Dhowa which is on Badulla-Bandarawela main road about 22 kilometers away from Badulla.

8. Fox Hill

Fox Hill is the most popular name among the racing community of Sri Lanka. It is a small but beautiful hilltop located in Diyatalawa. The significance of Fox Hill is that it is the venue of the famous Fox Hill supercross event. This is the highlight of the racing events held in Sri Lanka and it is an annual event that usually takes place in the month of April.

There’s an interesting story on how Fox Hill got its name. Accordingly, the British kept many of their prisoners in the Diyatalawa area during the Boer war in South Africa which happened between Great Britain and Dutch colonists. They were taken to Sri Lanka from a ship named “HMS FOX’. The captain and the crew of the ship displayed the Ship’s insignia on a hillock in Diyatalawa and ever since it is known as Fox Hill.

The Sri Lanka military academy built and maintains the Fox Hill Supercross track in this hillock. This motocross event was launched by the military academy in 1993. Over time, it has become the most happening event of the year in the Badulla district. Fans from around Sri Lanka visit Diyatalawa during the month of April to see the event. The best racers in the country participate in the event. Apart from that, the military uses the hillock for their training purposes as well.

You can also visit the Fox Hill supercross event in April or else plan a peaceful visit to the beautiful hillock at any other time of the year. It is situated around 36 kilometers away from Badulla city.

9. Wewassa Ella Waterfall

Sri Lankan hill country is known for the gorgeous waterfalls flowing down from green mountains. Wewassa Ella waterfall is one such beautiful waterfall in the Badulla district which is a tributary of the Badulu Oya.

Wewassa Ella Falls is 22 meters in height. Unfortunately, due to illegal logging and deforestation, Wewassa Ella is only visible during the rainy season. However, the waterfall is just drop-dead gorgeous during the monsoonal period.

The authorities are taking necessary actions to protect the surrounding forests of the area in order to conserve the waterfall. Anyway, this is one of the most beautiful spots to visit in the Badulla district. Still, make sure to visit it during the rainy season to get the best view.

This waterfall is situated between Passara and Badulla, just 10 kilometers away from Badulla to be specific.

10. St. Mark’s Church

St. Mark’s church is an Anglican church in Badulla. If you love visiting religious places , then this is certainly a must-visit destination in Badulla.

Bishop James Chapman consecrated this church in Badulla on the 25th of April, 1857. Therefore, it is also one of the oldest churches in the area. Rev. E. Mooyart was the first vicar at the church. The most significant feature of the church is the plaque inside the church. That honors Major Rogers, an elephant hunter, who faced death following a flash of lightning. His gravestone is in Nuwara Eliya and there is a belief that his gravestone also has been struck by lightning numerous times. Many visit the church to see this exhibit of the plaque.

The Department of Archaeology identified the bell tower and the church of St. Mark’s church to be protected monuments in 2008. However, the old colonial church is a small building but such a fascinating sight. The historical stories behind this church make it much more interesting.

St. Mark’s church is located in the central ward of the Badulla municipal council. In fact, this is at the junction of the Mahiyangana-Badulla main road.

11. Peessa Ella

This is another beautiful waterfall in the Badulla district. And yes, owing to its beauty, this 45 meters tall waterfall is a major tourist attraction in the area.

It also goes by the name, Morahela Falls. An aquifer that is at the top of the Lunugala mountain creates this wonderful cascade of water. Unlike some of the other waterfalls in the area, Peessa Ella is a year-round waterfall. During the monsoonal season, the waterfall flows in two streams.

Besides, there are some historical stories related to Peessa Ella. One such story is that King Dutugamunu gathered workmen to work in the Buddhist religious sites close to the Peessa Ella.

However, the nearest major cities to this waterfall are Passara and Lunugala. There is a distance of around 10 kilometers to the waterfall from Passara towards the Bibile town. Moreover, the distance between Peessa Ella and Badulla town is approximately 40 kilometers.

12. Idalgashinna

Idalgashinna is getting increasingly popular as a major tourist hotspot in the Badulla area. To be specific, Idalgashinna receives so much recognition as a social media sensation.

As you may already know, Idalgashinna railway station is the most picturesque railway station on the upcountry railway. The small colonial-style building of the railway station that is located at a very high altitude above sea level is a major aspect that creates this beauty. The height of this waterfall is 263 meters. Bambarakanda waterfall falls magically down from the Horton Plains mountains.

The surrounding area of the waterfall is also such a delight to see. You have to go through a mountainous track through a pinus forest to see the waterfall where you will be able to see mountainous views that are absolutely out of this world. However, there is a well-maintained path to the waterfall. So, it would be a moderately easy trek to the waterfall, which covers around 5 kilometers from the main road.

It is better to avoid the rainy season when visiting this destination as the trail can get quite hard. Bambarakanda waterfall stands majestically in the Kalupahana area in the Badulla district. It is around 61 kilometers away from Badulla city.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said Israel must be brought to justice for “usurpation and oppression” of the Palestinian territories, if not there won't be a guarantee that others would not do the same in other lands.

Raisi was delivering a statement during his one-day visit to Sri Lanka on Wednesday.

“When it come to the oppressor, when it come to the usurper, the Zionist Israeli regime has been committing oppression against the people of Palestine for 75 years, they have been usurping their territory,” Raisi said.

“First of all we have to expel the usurpers secondly we should make them pay the cost for all the damages they have created and thirdly we have to bring to justice the oppressor and usurper,” he said.

Earlier on Wednesday Raisi inaugurated a hydropower and irrigation project in Sri Lanka and said his country has proven the West doesn’t have a monopoly on technology.

Raisi is the first Iranian leader to visit Sri Lanka since former President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad visited the country in 2008.

“The Western countries tried to convince all others that knowledge and technology is exclusive to those countries,” Raisi said, addressing Sri Lanka's President Ranil Wickremesinghe and other top officials. He said the “idea” was rooted in “colonialism and arrogance” and that Iran was now able to share its knowledge with others, currently having projects in 20 countries.

The Uma Oya project, in the central Badulla district, was constructed with Iranian technical assistance. Valued at $514 million, it was started in 2010 by Iran’s FARAB engineering group and Iran initially provided $50 million. But in 2013, funding could not be continued because of international sanctions against Iran. The Sri Lankan government then decided to complete the project with its own funds using the same Iranian contractor.

The project was scheduled for completion in 2015 but was delayed by international sanctions against Iran, technical issues and the COVID-19 pandemic, the government said in a statement ahead of Raisi’s visit.

The project will add 290 GWh of electricity annually to the national grid and irrigate 4,500 hectares (11,100 acres) of new land and 1,500 hectares (3,700 acres) of existing agricultural land.

Raisi and Wickremesinghe later Wednesday witnessed the signing of five memoranda of understanding covering areas including tourism, science, technical media, films and sports.

Raisi arrived in Sri Lanka from Pakistan, where the two countries agreed to strengthen economic and security cooperation.
