Sacramento’s Premier Boat Venue for Parties & More ★★★★★

"I would give the River City Queen a 10 review if I could!!! Captain Jim and his staff were beyond great. Extremely accommodating, friendly, professional and just all around GREAT!! My wife had the best time celebrating her 50th birthday and Captain Jim and his staff were a huge part of it. Definitely the boat to get for a surprise party or any other type of party."

"50 people on the River City Queen to celebrate my birthday last week. What fun!!! We cruised up river and even made an excursion into the American River. The weather was completely perfect, the lighting gorgeous (it was the golden hour and sunset), food delicious, great mai tais and friendly staff! We even saw a sea lion lounging on someone's pier. My friends took some spectacular photos that I'm going to get them to share here."

"The perfect setting for my 80th birthday party. Family and friends dined at a delicious buffet and enjoyed their favorite beverages. The music, provided by Tony Shaw of Cornerstone Productions, was geared for the occasion, encouraging a raucous karaoke session. My birthday cake was fabulous. The hosts, Captain Jim and his mate, Kris made sure everything was perfect for the occasion. A memorable excursion on the Sacramento River. It was a party I will never forget."

It’s deceiving when trip advisor says $33 includes fees and taxes but when you check out the price jumps to $47 and it doesn’t show you what the extra charge is for!! That s pretty shady ! • Kimcaliyork 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Sacramento River Cocktail Cruise! Best cocktail cruise! The crew was great! From the manager, check in attendant, bar staff to the captain all were friendly. They were very accommodating as I had a large group with me. I was in Sacramento and decided to celebrate my birthday with family & friends on short notice. We all had such a good time! The DJ was awesome. He played a variety of music that everyone could dance to and I think I danced to all of them. Tips - 1. The bar area fills up quickly so get your drink as soon as you board. 2. Parking can be challenging in Old Sacramento so arrive early. Read more Written August 28, 2022
  • Joerg D 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Meh Cruise Advertised as a Cocktail Cruise cause they sell booze. (No cocktail included in the price) More expensive than the other one from the same tour operator. The tour is 1 1/2 hours long. They go up the river for 30 min turn around go 5 to 10 min past where they picked you up, turn around, go up, turn around.......That repeats 3 times, and that is it. No explanation of what one sees on the riverbank (Although I can figure out homeless camps myself) The music is pretty good, they have a DJ and the cocktails are decent. • 906UPEh 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles OK for relaxing cruise We were walking along the riverfront and decided to get last-minute tickets for the cocktail cruise. We love boating and figured this would be a nice way to see the city. The boat is nice with a big, open deck and tables for 4-6 people to hang out. The DJ played good music but nobody was dancing. Drink prices were average for a big city. However, it wasn't a very scenic cruise. You mostly just see trees, parks, some marinas, and a lot of homeless camps along the river. It's a nice view of the Tower Bridge, but that's about all there is to see. We still enjoyed ourselves, but don't waste your money if you're not into boats or super excited about the bridge. • Tessa2 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Nice boat, nice people but..,, Well this is basically a tour of homeless encampments along the river. Enlightening when they pass by the water intake area where the water you brush your teeth with at your hotel comes from and it is surrounded by garbage strewn homeless encampments. No toilets of course. I’m not sure why Californians put up with this. Read more Written September 22, 2019
  • Ken H 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A great, fun way to spend an hour!!! We have taken some six of these Hornblower Cruises all over America (Alaska, San Diego - couple of times, Niagara Falls, San Francisco, etc.). The boat was nice, but we had to stand for the entire trip as all the tables & chairs on the upper deck were taken very quickly. Was a little surprised by the lack of seating based on our other experiences with Hornblower. All went great otherwise. The narrator was a BLAST. This college-age young man (whose name escapes me right now) was excellent with a dry wit my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed. I gave him a tip as we exited the boat. If you think about going on this trip, DO IT! You will learn new things about Old Sacramento, the rivers and see the Capital City from a new angle. Read more Written July 6, 2019
  • 2Klecks 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Fun Rock Cruise! Four of us tried this cruise on a Friday night and we had a great time! We got on the boat at the posted time and went upstairs to the bar and shared a table that could accommodate four chairs (grab them quick because there aren't enough chairs for everyone to sit). The bar service went surprisingly quickly and the DJ music got everyone up and dancing pretty quickly. It was dark, so not a whole lot to see on shore, but we were more interested in talking and dancing anyway. We would recommend for any age group over 21. A very fun evening! Sacramento River Delta Day Trip

The Sacramento River Delta, also known as the California Delta, offers a vast network of waterways that span hundreds of miles, providing ample opportunities for outdoor exploration such as boating, bird-watching, camping, and more. Whether living in the Sacramento or San Francisco Bay Area, the Sacramento Delta offers an excellent day trip or a fun weekend adventure. With countless activities available, this article will provide an overview of some of the most popular attractions in the area.

Three Mile Slough Bridge

Sacramento Delta Driving Loop

If you want to take a driving tour of the significant historical areas in the Delta, this route is an excellent option to see all the sites. The journey starts from Rio Vista. You head north and follow a 40-mile clockwise loop from there. You can spend an entire day exploring the historic river towns with a stop for lunch along the driving route around the Sacramento River Delta.

Rio Vista California Delta Driving Loop

Rio Vista California

Rio Vista was founded in 1858 and was a popular stopover point for mariners and miners traveling between San Francisco and Sacramento. To learn more about the town’s history, visit the Rio Vista Museum. It is only open on weekends. Rio Vista has two popular spots for dining: Foster’s Bighorn and The Point Restaurant. Foster’s Bighorn might only suit some. Fosters is a unique establishment that combines a local bar’s ambiance with a tourist attraction’s appeal. The walls are covered with a vast taxidermy collection.

Foster's Bighorn Rio Vista

The Point Restaurant is located at the Delta Marina and offers a breathtaking view of the Sacramento River, where guests can witness enormous ships passing by. After stopping at Rio Vista, head towards the Rio Vista Ferry for a quick trip to Ryer Island. Then, board the J-Mac Ferry, which will take you across Steamboat Slough. Both ferries, the Real McCoy II and the J-Mack operate 24/7 and are free of charge. From there, head north along Highway 84 and take in the views of the Sacramento River Deep Water Channel on your left and farmland on your right. Next up is the small town of Courtland.

Courtland California Courthouse Building

Courtland California Historic Delta Town

Take Courtland Road at mile 15, turn right onto River Road, cross Sutter Slough Bridge and Paintersville Bridge, then turn left to Courtland. Courtland is a small town with a grand courthouse building constructed in 1915. The building is not used as a court and is private property. Courtland was named after Courtland Sims, a landowner, not for the courthouse building. Like other Delta towns, Courtland was once home to Chinese Americans who farmed and built the levees that protected the area from flooding. Courtland also holds an annual Pear Fair, which draws visitors from around the region. The rest of the Delta Loop route will follow Highway 160 unless you choose to detour to Grand Island Mansion for Sunday Brunch.

grand-island-mansion

Grand Island Mansion 1920s Estate

Grand Island Mansion is a beautiful spot for lunch on the Sacramento River Delta, once the largest private home in the area. The Mansion’s construction was completed in 1920, and it remained a family home until the Great Depression when most of the land was sold. Since 1978, the Mansion has operated as a dining, wedding, and event venue. The Mansion has been refurbished to ensure that this classic landmark will always embody the opulent style of a bygone era. The Mansion is four stories tall and has over 50 rooms. The Mansion is open for Brunch on selected Sundays. If you wish to make reservations, kindly visit the Mansions website .

Locke California

Locke California Historic District

Locke came to be in 1915. It is a town that the Chinese built for the Chinese population of workers after many were displaced due to a fire in nearby Walnut Grove. In August of 1970, Locke was added to the National Registry of Historic Places due to its unique status as the only town in the United States that the Chinese built for the Chinese—one of the places you can visit while in Locke is the Chinese School. It was established in 1926 and continued until 1940, when it was closed. Today, the Chinese School is a museum. Unfortunately, the Locke Garden Restaurant has permanently closed its doors. If you’re looking for a place to eat, you must head to nearby Walnut Creek.

Ryde Hotel Ryde, California

Ryde, California Prohibition Era Grand Hotel

The farming community of Ryde was established in 1893 when a post office was built along with a general store and saloon. The current Ryde Hotel was built in 1927 and included a barber shop, beauty salon, and riverboat dock. The hotel had a secret tunnel to the River, used for smuggling liquor into a basement speakeasy. Today, the refurbished hotel serves as a wedding venue and hosts Sunday brunch twice a month. Visit the hotel website for more information.

isleton-california-delta

Isleton California

Isleton is a beautiful place to take a break and have lunch during your road trip. Walking down Main Street in Isleton gives you the feeling of returning to the 1950s. Although some stores may be closed, it’s still a great place to visit. Peter’s Steak House is a well-known place to dine in town and caters to locals, travelers, and friendly biker groups out for a ride. Peter, the former cook at the now-closed Del Rio Hotel, runs the restaurant. The menu offers a variety of dishes, including prime rib, steaks, seafood, Baby Back Pork Ribs, and more. The address is 203 Second Street, Isleton, California.

Brannan Island

Fishing in the Sacramento Delta

Fishing attracts a large number of anglers to the delta region. Species in the Delta area include bluegill, several types of bass and catfish, and shad. Salmon and sturgeon Steelhead have a run through the Delta, and tasty crawdads are also a favorite.

Delta Marina RV Resort Point Restaurant Rio Vista CA

Camping in the Delta

More than 50 campgrounds and RV parks are in the Sacramento River Delta area, making planning a nature-based weekend at the Delta easy. The camping options include public and private areas, with most sites along the waterway. Private resorts offer boat launching facilities; some places even offer boat-in camping for a more secluded experience.

Brannan Island State Recreation Area

Brannan Island State Recreation Area

Brannan Island is an excellent choice if you’re looking for day-use options. The park has windsurfing, picnicking areas, shade structures, and restrooms. If you’re an angler or waterfowl hunter, check out Franks Tract State Recreation Area, located southeast of Brannan Island.

california-delta-bird-watching

Bird Watching California Delta

The Sacramento River Delta is a bird-watcher’s paradise, with numerous waterways and diverse habitats. As part of the Great Pacific Flyway, birds migrating from Alaska to Mexico stop here, providing a great chance to observe both resident and visiting species.

Wine Tasting Sacramento River Delta

Wine Tasting California Delta

Although the Delta region may not be known for its wine scene, a few tasting rooms in the small town of Clarksburg are worth visiting during your Delta trip. Located approximately 15 miles south of Sacramento, Clarksburg is home to Galeria do Vinho, Scribner Bend Vineyards, and Bogle Vineyards, all offering a fun wine-tasting experience.

Sacramento River Cruise

Sacramento River Cruise

Several operators offer cruises on the Sacramento River. This can be a great way to see the River if you want to get out on the water with a guide and a fun atmosphere. Most cruises have a naturalist or guide who will highlight the sites, wildlife, and historical importance of things you pass.  For a unique experience aboard an old paddlewheel boat, you should head to Pld Town Sacramento and visit the Delta King. Constructed in Scotland in 1920, the Delta King used to carry passengers from San Francisco into the Delta.

Sacramento River Delta

Getting to the Sacramento River Delta

The Sacramento River Delta is in Northern California and is named after its triangular shape, with Sacramento, Stockton, and Pittsburgh at each corner. There are many things to see and do in the Delta, so we suggest a day trip to explore. You might enjoy it so much that you return for a weekend getaway.

This spirit is shown by the work being done to create a beautiful riverfront Promenade and new planters along Main Street as well as several new murals downtown. We are fortunate to live in a city that holds onto its small town charm while providing opportunities and services to our citizens and visitors.

There is a lot to see and do in the Delta – let someone else be your guide! Air conditioned vans, kayak excursions, and boat charters are at your call.

We're not around right now. But you can send us an email and we'll get back to you, asap.

Delta Queen Steamboat Company

America’s last authentic overnight steamboat

The legendary Delta Queen invites you aboard to experience a nostalgic return to America’s past!

The Delta Queen is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. She is also a National Historic Landmark, a member of the National Maritime Hall of Fame, and most recently designated a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Once the renovation process is complete, the Delta Queen will return to the waterways of America’s Heartland and Deep South, giving passengers the opportunity to experience the rivers from America’s only authentic 1927 overnight paddlewheel steamboat.
