Us national parks travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

What is the best time to visit national parks in the US?

The best time to visit a national park depends on what you want to experience on your trip. The US is a huge country with diverse weather, foliage, and wildlife. Most parks change quite dramatically from season to season. Our trips run all year round but spring through to early fall is the most popular time to go when the weather is mild, crowds are smaller, and hiking conditions are good.

What is mobile/cell phone service and internet access like in US national parks?

Mobile phone service, Wi-Fi, and internet access vary, and some parks will have coverage while others may be completely cut off.

Most visitor centers, lodges, and restaurants will offer free internet access, but it’s worth reading up on coverage or checking with your guide before your trip begins so you can be prepared.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Does my trip support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. Trips to this country directly support our global Intrepid Foundation partners, Eden Reforestation Projects and World Bicycle Relief. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Tauck's National Park vacations offer inside experiences thanks to our relationships and partnerships within the parks. With exceptional access, we are able to handle all of the details for you so you can spend more time enjoying these must-see places at the best time of day and with fewer crowds.

National Parks

  • FEATURED TOURS

Welcome to the National Parks

Our relationships with the national parks runs deep going back many many years. With that... we are able to show you something pretty special as you visit must-see places at their must-see times of day and when you stay at inside-the-park hotels, the crowds are fewer and the experience is richer. There's no planning and no organizing – and the best of all, no driving; we take care of all the details. And at the end of the day, hearing "I've seen and done everything I hoped to" is music to our ears.

Explore three national parks on one journey, grand teton national park, niagara falls, ontario, "canada's capital cities plus niagara falls" and "cruising the great lakes: chicago to toronto".

Comprised of three waterfalls – American Falls, Horseshoe Falls and Bridal Veil Falls – Niagara Falls water stems from the upper Great Lakes; the river is estimated to be 12,000 years old. Journey to thundering Niagara Falls for a catamaran cruise near the plunging waters and misty spray of the waterfalls – getting wet is a distinct possibility – and explore the quaint Victorian village of Niagara-on-the-Lake with its flower-filled, tree-lined streets.

Yellowstone National Park

Bryce canyon national park, a feast for the eyes... and the soul.

Oranges and pinks never seen anywhere else dance and dazzle the eye as sunlight plays over Bryce Canyon National Park, where wind and rain have sculpted the canyon's famously quirky, logic-defying "hoodoos" that, according to Paiute legend, were once human before a powerful god called Coyote froze them into rock (for the record, the rock is Navajo sandstone). This universe of warm colors literally glows at sunrise and sunset – a sight to see that can send shivers up your spine. The park reveals nature dressed in a coat of many colors – hues beyond imagining, deeply satisfying to the eye, and energizing to the spirit.

Grand Canyon National Park

Not just a hole in the ground....

Surely you have stumbled upon some other planet... or at least it feels that way at Grand Canyon National Park. Your first glimpse of the enormous Grand Canyon strains credulity. What giants have been playing with the rock here? Or what cataclysmic force of the universe? Then the drama starts. Clouds, shadows, and the shifting sun keep transforming the landscape. As the sun flames in the west, canyon walls turn red while the giants paint the sky, creating masterpieces so beautiful they freeze you in your tracks. The Grand Canyon sprawls wide open, carved out by the Colorado River, revealing two billion years of Earth's history; here is where air meets land, where you meet what feels like destiny, with just the white-tailed Kaibab squirrel, only found here, as witness.

Yosemite National Park

Through the eyes of john muir and ansel adams.

What a young Ansel Adams saw through his lens as he trekked into the California wilderness more than 100 years ago – as John Muir did a half-century before him – has inspired countless visitors to explore its chiseled landscapes in starry-eyed wonder ever since. You won't find modern conveniences here. Celestial bodies trump electricity. Running water falls from rocks. Residents are furred, finned or feathered. And skyscrapers with names like Half Dome and El Capitan are nature made. Adams was just 14 when he first spied the grandeur of Yosemite National Park, armed with a Kodak Brownie camera his father had given him… and a new era began not only for him, but for the wilderness treasures he spent his lifetime celebrating. His iconic photographs need no words or explanation. Even in black and white, they capture what he felt about places now immortalized for future generations.

Itinerary idea in detail

Private customized tour.

Today, you will arrive at Rapid City Airport, then collect your hire car and make the short drive south to stay in Custer State Park for the next three nights. This way, you'll have a chance to thoroughly explore the area's natural and man-made wonders. We also offer accommodation in Rapid City for the night if you don't fancy driving straight off the plane.

Custer National Park

Custer State Park is surrounded by numerous attractions and activities in the Black Hills region of South Dakota. We highly recommend you set off early for a drive through the park, watching out for bison in the long grass. Some of the most scenic drives are the Wildlife Loop Road, Needles Highway, and Iron Mountain Road. There are also some fantastic hikes in the park and numerous large lakes for water recreation.

Mount Rushmore National Monument, South Dakota

Another day in Custer allows you to visit two famous monuments in the area, Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial. The two are often visited in tandem to tell a wider story. For more information on the Native American creation story, be sure to visit Jewel Cave and Wind Cave while you are in Custer.

Mount Rushmore

Leaving Custer today, you may wish to visit the old Wild West town of Deadwood and Devil's Tower National Monument before continuing to Sheridan, which is around a three-hour drive, where you'll stop for the night. On arrival, take a leisurely stroll through Sheridan's historic downtown district, which is filled with charming shops, art galleries, and historic buildings.

Bighorn Mountains, near Sheridan

Leave Sheridan and continue north to the historic Western town of Cody, which is another three-hour drive. Stop off in Bighorn National Forest along the way and Antelope Butte Mountain Recreation area for some great hiking and scenic viewpoints. Once in Cody, step back in time as you wander through the authentic log cabins, saloons, and shops and learn about the town's connection to famous Western figures like Buffalo Bill Cody and Butch Cassidy. Be sure to invest in some cowboy boots or a hand-crafted belt or buckle, while here.

Old buildings at Old Trail Town Historical Museum, Cody

A highlight of the town is the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, which was originally founded in 1912 and comprises several distinct museums, including the Buffalo Bill Museum, Whitney Gallery of Western Art, the Plains Indian Museum, the Cody Firearms Museum and the Draper Museum of Natural History.

Cowboy at the Cody Nite Rodeo

Cody is the gateway to Yellowstone National Park, and your drive today takes you down the Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway and into Yellowstone National Park. The scenery gets ever more spectacular as you approach Yellowstone Lake. Make sure you keep a lookout for wildlife that thrives here and the marvels of the geothermal landscapes.

Old Faithful Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park

Enjoy a full day in Yellowstone. Be sure to visit 'Old Faithful', the park's renowned geyser, as well as the colorful lakes, boiling mud and sulfurous springs. Keep your eyes open for an abundance of wildlife while in the park. In the evening, kayak on Lake Yellowstone with a small group and enjoy the serene ambience of the area as the sun sets over the lake.

Wolf, Yellowstone National Park

Drive north out of the park to the small town of Gardiner, which is the northern gateway of Yellowstone National Park. While in the park, there are plenty of scenic drives and points of interest for you along the way. One stop not to be missed is the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. When you arrive in Gardiner, there are fantastic natural hot springs, which are great for an afternoon of relaxation.

Grand Teton to Yellowstone

Today, you're up bright and early to join your experienced naturalist guide for a private, wildlife-focused tour of Yellowstone National Park. Your knowledgeable guide knows all the best spots to view wolves, bison, elk, smaller mammals and birds of prey. Wildlife sightings are, of course, variable, but your guide will show you how to use the best spotting scopes and give you tips on photographing these majestic animals, coupled with information on the history and geology of the area.

Yellowstone bear

Spend another day in northern Yellowstone, hiking in the park or exploring the region's geothermal wonders. There are plenty of great hikes in the Lamar Valley and scenic drives throughout the national park. We can also recommend visiting Mammoth Hot Springs to view these incredible natural spring formations.

Elk in Yellowstone National Park

Leaving Gardiner and Yellowstone National Park, drive north for around four hours to reach the university town of Missoula. The drive through western Montana is very scenic, passing some natural monuments, such as the Lewis and Clark State Caverns. On arrival in Missoula, there are many easily accessible shops, breweries, and restaurants. End the day with a sunset stroll along the Clark Fork River.

An old barn, Mission Mountains near Missoula, Montana

Leave Missoula today for the two-and-a-half-hour drive through Western Montana's Glacier Country. Along the way, the drive is exceptionally scenic and there's a chance to explore Lolo National Forest and Flathead Lake before reaching charming Whitefish.

Whitefish Lake, Montana

Embark on a private hike in Glacier National Park with your experienced guide. As the hike is for your group only, it can be fully tailored to your fitness levels. You'll begin by heading into the park and following trails with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Your guide will share insights about the park's ecology and history as you hike through Glacier's pristine wilderness.

Glacier National Park

Today is your own to explore Glacier National Park. Please be aware that this national park is subject to timed entry restrictions during the summer months, and it's necessary to speak to your Country Specialist about the possibility of securing these when you enquire. However, there are some parts of the park that are accessible without a permit through the east entrance. Alternatively, there is the option to add a Red Bus Tour to different parts of the national park if you would prefer a guided experience.

A mountain goat, Glacier National Park, Montana

Sadly, your Rockies adventure has come to an end. Depart Whitefish today and drive down to Kalispell to return the hire car and catch your onward flight.

Considered one of the world's best places to visit , Glacier National Park spans two mountain ranges and includes more than 700 lakes across Montana. Take advantage of the park's expansive hiking trails, and be sure to hit traveler favorites like the Trail of the Cedars and Iceberg Lake Trail. Other activities include a ride along the scenic Going-to-the-Sun Road and a trip to the unique Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Canadian border. What's more, Glacier National Park hosts plenty of free ranger-led activities like guided hikes and stargazing events ideal for visitors of all ages.

Even if Yellowstone didn't hold the incredible distinction of being the world's first national park, the 2.2 million-acre park, which stretches across Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, could easily stand on its own for its unique natural attractions and magnificent landscapes . Here, travelers can get lost in the splendor of Yellowstone's many lakes, mountains, bison-filled valleys and, of course, its unmatched hot springs and active geysers (of which the park boasts more than half of the world's supply). To avoid the crowds that often plague Yellowstone while also ensuring excellent weather, plan to visit in April, May or October.

tours of usa national parks

One of California's most-visited national parks, Yosemite National Park stands out for its bevy of impressive waterfalls, such as Vernal Fall and Bridalveil Fall, as well as its unique granite rock formations like Half Dome and El Capitan. There are also ample scenic hiking and camping opportunities; just keep in mind that campsites sell out quickly after becoming available for booking, so make your reservations in advance. Whatever your itinerary may be, make sure to stop by the Tunnel View overlook, which offers showstopping panoramas of Yosemite Valley. What's more, the picturesque lookout spot is relatively easy to access (no hiking is required).

The Grand Canyon is so magnificent that even the highest quality photos don't do the Arizona park's vast beauty justice – you just have to see it in person. The 18-by-277-mile UNESCO World Heritage Site offers endless hiking opportunities with trails of various lengths and degrees of difficulty, as well as the chance to raft the Colorado River. For a slight break from the tourist crowds, head to the less-congested North Rim. And if you're looking for a different vantage point, consider a helicopter tour to learn more about Grand Canyon National Park and see it in all its glory from above.

Jackson Hole's backcountry is a wild wonderland begging to be explored. Once home to ranchers and fur trappers, this Wyoming park now offers more than 250 miles of trails that weave past forests, lakes and the jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Grand Teton mountain range. The Cascade Canyon Trail – which takes travelers past waterfalls, glacier-carved canyons and more – shows off the best of Grand Teton National Park's stunning topography. Don't forget to stop by the Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center to stock up on maps, check out its informational exhibits and watch the interesting documentary film about the park.

Utah's Zion National Park is a paradise for thrill-seekers. Hike Angels Landing, which brings you up through a nearly 1,500-foot natural staircase (permits are required to hike this popular trail and are awarded through an online lottery system). You can also trek The Narrows, a roughly 10-mile hike through the thinnest section of Zion Canyon, which requires hikers to travel upstream through the Virgin River. For a less strenuous exploration of the park, join a shuttle bus tour to traverse the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, which takes you past many of the park's most famous landmarks.

Spanning six million acres of unspoiled Alaskan wilderness, Denali National Park and Preserve is as vast as it is fascinating. One-sixth of the park is covered in glaciers, and the tallest mountain in North America, Denali, stands within its bounds, towering at 20,310 feet high. The park appeals to true explorers as there isn't an abundance of marked trails. However, free ranger-led trail hikes are available seasonally. Visitors can also watch a sled dog demonstration, go snowmobiling or take a narrated bus tour of the 92-mile Denali Park Road to see scenic landmarks like Savage River and Wonder Lake.

Comprised of glaciers, coastal fjords and icefields, Kenai Fjords National Park transports guests to an age where ice covered large parts of the earth. The Harding Icefield – which was created more than 23,000 years ago – is one of this Alaska park's main features, extending for 700 square miles and viewable via the 8.2-mile Harding Icefield Trail. Visitors can also embark on the Glacier Overlook Trail and Glacier View Loop Trail to catch vistas of Exit Glacier, which flows from the famed icefield. Or, take a kayak or a boat tour to experience the awe-inspiring landscapes from the water.

Hoodoos are odd-shaped pillars of rock left standing from forces of erosion, and Bryce Canyon National Park is home to the most extensive collection of hoodoos in the world. Located in southern Utah, the nearly 36,000-acre park offers an array of hiking opportunities. All trails offer a glimpse of the impressive red rock formations; visitors can also sign up for guided horseback riding tours. While Bryce Canyon is most popular in summer, the park's stark white snow-covered landscape juxtaposed with the orange-red rocks is an unforgettable sight. Winter is also a prime time for activities such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

tours of usa national parks

As the name suggests, Redwood National and State Parks are best known for their sky-high redwood trees, which typically soar more than 300 feet tall. Along with exploring the old-growth redwood groves, travelers can hike past rivers, through prairies and along 40 miles of Pacific Coast shoreline, spotting wildlife like elk, sea lions and various species of birds as they go. If you can't stay long, scenic drives like Howland Hill Road and Enderts Beach Road showcase park highlights. But for those wanting to sleep under the stars and rise with the sun, there are four developed campgrounds.

Established in 1929 and awarded national park status in 1971, Arches National Park covers nearly 77,000 acres in eastern Utah. Oddly shaped sandstone monuments occupy every view, and the formations make the park an excellent place for backpackers, rock climbers and hikers, not to mention photographers. Visitors will find a whopping 2,000-plus arches in the park – the world's densest concentration of these natural structures. The most popular to see are Landscape Arch, Delicate Arch and Double Arch. Plus, travelers will want to check out the visitor center, which features a wealth of information and exhibits outlining Arches National Park's history, geology and more.

tours of usa national parks

Sequoia National Park is defined by its beautiful, towering sequoia trees – the largest trees in the world. Travelers can hike through this unique California national park to admire its trees, rivers, meadows and wildlife. A visit here is not complete without seeing the Giant Forest's General Sherman Tree, which measures nearly 275 feet tall and more than 36 feet in diameter, making it the world's largest tree by volume. After you ogle the truly impressive evergreens, try some other adventurous activities like rock climbing, horseback riding or fishing.

tours of usa national parks

Among the nearly 1 million acres that make up Olympic National Park, visitors can wander through the enchanting Hoh Rainforest, trek to stunning overlooks and relax on more than 70 miles of Pacific Northwest coastline. One of North America's top hiking destinations , this Washington state gem features top trails like Mount Storm King and the Hall of Mosses. However, you will also want to save time for trying out one of Olympic National Park's other popular activities, which range from canoeing on Lake Crescent to birdwatching on Kalaloch and Ruby Beach.

tours of usa national parks

Visit Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park for a chance to get up close and personal with two of the world's most active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea. The latter almost continually erupts, which visitors can witness from multiple points in the park, including Crater Rim Drive and the famous Chain of Craters Road (although eruption sightings are never guaranteed). While driving along Chain of Craters Road, set aside time to stop at the Kealakomo Overlook. The scenic lookout offers expansive views of the Pacific Ocean and the ancient village of Kealakomo.

tours of usa national parks

At 14,410 feet tall, Mount Rainer is the highest peak in the Cascade Range and the tallest volcano in the contiguous United States. Though thousands of travelers tackle the ambitious hike to the mountain's summit each year, it's far more popular to drive to Sunrise, the highest point accessible by vehicle, to soak in 360-degree views of the Cascade Range and Emmons Glacier. Numerous shorter hikes are also available at Mount Rainier National Park, so visitors can explore the temperate rainforests of Carbon River, admire the picturesque wildflower meadows at Paradise or search for the waterfalls in the old-growth forests at Ohanapecosh.

tours of usa national parks

The Rockies earn plenty of points for their convenience. Sitting about 70 miles northwest of Denver, Rocky Mountain National Park makes for an easy daytrip. However, you could also spend days exploring this Colorado park. The Rockies' magnificent landscape is one for the books, featuring more than 350 miles of scenic trails, plenty of lakes and numerous mountain peaks taller than 10,000 feet. If you're short on time, Emerald Lake Trail is a popular trek that's less than 5 miles round trip and promises spectacular alpine views. If you'd rather skip the hiking, opt instead for an auto tour of Trail Ridge Road.

I chose this tour as it covered many of the places in the area I had been hoping to get to. Lots of miles on the bus but plenty of stops/ breaks between each main tour stop to keep it interesting. I had a great time !

A well-arranged tour, which covers the views of canyons from high above 8000ft (the Grand Canyon and Bryce), down to the basin of Zion Park. I recalled to see my tour mates watching the Canyon's view with tears of joy and appreciation. The Zion absolutely captured my heart and soul with its grand...

Contiki social travel trips have a large degree of flexibility built into them to enable you to truly own your experience. This means that some trip elements are not included in the initial cost and may require additional budgeting.

Flights to and from your starting and ending points are not included in the cost of your trip. These can be added on during the booking process either online or via our contact center or booked independently by you.

Each trip contains the right amount of free time for you to explore or indulge your travel desires. We offer Free Time Add-Ons, which are additional experiences that are not included in the overall price. These add ons are highlighted on the specific trip page. Your Trip Manager will highlight these to you and organise their booking on trip. Exceptions may apply where pre booking is required but this will be made known to you in your pre departure information.

A number of meal times are left open for you to explore a region and its foodie offerings in greater detail, so budgeting for your taste in non-catered meals is important.

14. Denali Peak Sightseeing by Plane

Taking a sightseeing plane tour to Mount Denali in Denali National Park and Preserve is undoubtedly one of the top national park experiences for those seeking awe-inspiring vistas and a deeper connection to the wilderness.

A plane tour offers a privileged perspective, soaring above the park’s vast wilderness and glaciers to reveal the iconic mountain’s towering presence.

While the flight pattern is dependent on weather, you’re sure to have an incredible journey above the clouds.  You’ll also have onboard commentary to help you get the most out of your trip.

What Activities Can People Do When Visiting the National Parks?

One of the primary draws of national parks is the opportunity to immerse yourself in some of the most breathtaking and diverse landscapes on the planet. Activities within these parks can include hiking along scenic trails, from easy strolls to challenging backcountry treks, providing a chance to witness pristine wilderness, waterfalls, and wildlife up close.

For those interested in wildlife and nature photography, national parks are a paradise. You can capture stunning shots of wildlife like bison, elk, and bears, as well as dramatic landscapes and night skies filled with stars. Birdwatching enthusiasts can spot diverse avian species, making each park a unique birding destination.

If you’re into water activities, kayaking , canoeing, and rafting are often possible in parks with rivers and lakes. Some parks have superb opportunities for fishing, allowing you to try your hand at catching native fish species.

Additionally, for history buffs, national parks offer a wealth of cultural and historical sites, from ancient Native American dwellings to historic forts and battlefields. You can learn about the cultural heritage of these places and the people who shaped their history.

Finally, the parks provide a serene backdrop for relaxation and reflection. Whether you’re enjoying a picnic by a serene lake, taking in a ranger talk, or simply sitting in the midst of the wilderness, these parks offer a chance to connect with nature and find solace away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

How Long Should You Spend at a National Park?

The ideal duration for a visit to the US national parks can vary widely depending on several factors, including your interests, the specific parks you plan to visit, and your travel goals. As a general guideline, it’s recommended to spend at least 2 to 3 days in each national park to fully immerse yourself in its unique beauty and activities. This allows time for exploring key landmarks, hiking some trails, and enjoying ranger-led programs.

When is the Best Time to Visit the National Parks?

As a general guideline, the ideal time to visit most national parks is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to early June) and fall (September to early October). During these periods, you can typically enjoy pleasant weather, smaller crowds, and the opportunity to witness the beauty of changing seasons. Spring brings blooming wildflowers and rejuvenated landscapes, while fall dazzles with vibrant foliage and milder temperatures.

Ultimately, however, deciding when to visit the national parks will depend on the experience you want to have and what activities you would like to participate in.  Obviously, you can’t go snowshoeing in the summer.

How Do You Avoid Crowds at National Parks?

First and foremost, consider visiting the parks during the shoulder seasons of spring and fall when the weather is still pleasant, but the visitor numbers have significantly diminished compared to the busy summer months. Weekdays also tend to be quieter than weekends, allowing for a more peaceful and less congested visit.

Furthermore, opt for lesser-known or less-visited national parks and off-the-beaten-path trails within popular parks. Research and choose parks that are not typically on the top of everyone’s list but still offer exceptional natural beauty and outdoor activities.

Additionally, explore the park during non-peak hours, such as early morning or late afternoon, to experience the tranquil serenity and stunning views with fewer people around.

Lastly, be flexible with your itinerary and open to exploring less advertised trails and viewpoints. Sometimes the hidden gems and less-popular areas can offer equally, if not more, stunning scenery and a chance to appreciate the beauty of the natural world without the hustle and bustle of larger crowds.

Final Thoughts on the Best National Park Experiences and Tours

Hopefully, this post has given you an idea of some of the incredible national park experiences that you can have at various parks within the United States.  No matter which tour you choose, it is sure to help create memories to last a lifetime.  So go ahead and get planning your next trip!

Grand Canyon National Park

One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, the UNESCO-listed Grand Canyon National Park is a phenomenal feat of nature. You’ll walk the rim and learn from your Local Specialist how it formed over the past 40 million years. From sunrise to sunset, the Grand Canyon is truly mesmerising.

Mesa Verde National Park

Located in Colorado, this UNESCO-listed national park is filled with centuries-old history. You’ll drive the Mesa Top Loop Road past archaeological sites and lookouts, and see the ancient cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Puebloan people, that are chiselled out of the sandstone canyon walls.

Arches National Park

We’ll take you on a journey through the spectacular sandstone arches of Arches National Park. There are more than 2,000 natural arches carved by the wind, including the long Landscape Arch. You can hike to the viewpoint of the iconic Delicate Arch and discover other formations such as Balanced Rock, soaring over the desert.

Yellowstone National Park

Discover the geothermal wonderland of Yellowstone National Park, one of the world’s oldest national parks. We’ll show you the steaming hot springs, alpine forests and rivers, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, mud paint pots, and the remarkable shooting waters of Old Faithful. Keep your eyes peeled for animals like bears, bison, elk and wolves.

Yosemite National Park

We’ll also explore Tenaya Lake and Tuolumne Meadows, before taking a special tour of the Yosemite Valley floor.

Our top 5 things to do in US National Parks

When you visit US National Parks with Trafalgar, we’ll show you the top national parks in the country, from the giant Grand Canyon to the ancient trees of Yosemite.

Buffalo wings

Found across the country, buffalo wings are one of the most beloved dishes in the United States. An unbreaded chicken wing is deep-fried and coated in a vinegar cayenne hot sauce with melted butter. They’re best served hot and dipped in blue cheese or ranch dressing.

Cheesesteak

Hailing from Philadelphia, the cheesesteak is now a classic American dish found across the country. It’s a sandwich made from thin slices of beefsteak and melted cheese, stuffed in a long hoagie roll, and it’s a delicious meal after a long day of hiking through national parks.

Also known as the ‘Yankee pot roast’, this is a braised beef dish made from slow cooking a piece of beef with gravy and vegetables such as potatoes, onions and carrots. The cooking method produces a soft, succulent meat drenched in rich gravy, for a warm and hearty meal.

Best food in US National Parks

Exploring the trails of the national parks works up an appetite, and we’ll show you the best places to taste all the famous dishes of the United States.

6 tips to beat the crowds at national parks, from a couple who visited all 63 of them

  • Matt and Karen Smith, college sweethearts, quit their jobs in 2010 to visit every US national park.
  • They love hiking and wildlife but aren't exactly fans of crowds.
  • The Smiths shared their best tips for avoiding crowded national parks.

Insider Today

Summer is approaching, and for many Americans, that means one thing: It's the season to get out and explore a US national park .

Last year, the National Parks Service reported that over 325 million people visited at least one of the national parks in the US, a 4% jump from the previous year.

With such numbers, crowds are almost inevitable. But, according to Matt and Karen Smith, a couple who has been to every major US national park , there are several ways to avoid falling into a throng of tourists.

The Smiths are both 63 and met at college in Kansas. "For the first 25 years of marriage, we were focused on going to work and getting a paycheck and raising kids," Matt told Business Insider.

In 2010, they became empty nesters, with the youngest of their three children going off to college. After moving to Seattle and being introduced to the national parks by close friends, they decided to set out on an adventure using their savings to visit all 63 national parks in the US.

Their adventure took them to far-flung corners of the US, like American Samoa and north of the Arctic circle. Along the way, they wrote emails to their friends, Bob and Sue, who had inspired them to explore the national parks. Eventually, they compiled those emails — anecdotes and observations about their national parks experiences — into their first book "Dear Bob and Sue."

Today, Matt and Karen regularly share national parks content on Instagram and on their podcast . Here, the national parks veterans share with Business Insider their tips on how to beat the crowds.

If you can, try to visit a national park on a weekday.

The Smiths said that one of the easiest ways to avoid throngs of tourists at the height of summer is to visit a national park on a day other than Saturday or Sunday.

"If you're going at a crowded time," Karen said, "Try not to go on a weekend because when you have a weekend, it draws all the local people in to hike."

Arrive early — and don't rule out returning at dusk.

It might seem like it goes without saying, but the earlier you arrive at a national park, the better your chances are to enjoy uninterrupted hiking and wildlife spotting.

"If you're going on a hike, you can set off on the hike before the crowds get there," Karen said, adding that if visitors arrive by car, they'll also have a better parking experience.

It may also be worth staying late or returning in the evening to soak in some spectacular vistas in peace and quiet, the Smiths added.

When they visit Arches National Park near Moab, Utah, they like to stay local and return to the park in the evening. " Because the day trippers leave about five or six, we like to go and watch the sunset," Karen said. "There's hardly anybody there."

Booking tours with park rangers can be a tourist-avoiding game changer.

If a national park offers tours with rangers, the Smiths recommend booking one to escape the hustle and bustle of the more well known areas. The couple did a canoe tour in Congaree, a national park in South Carolina, for example.

Karen said tours are usually limited to 10 to 12 people. "So all of a sudden, you're not in the crowds. You're with just a handful of people and a ranger," she added.

Matt said that some tours also have entrance preferences, meaning guests can access the parks before other tourists.

Crowds tend to dissipate if you hike a quarter mile down any trail.

Karen and Matt are avid hikers — and they love it for multiple reasons.

"The hiking is just physically good for us," Matt said, adding that it also helps them "get away from the crowds."

"If you hike a quarter mile down any trail, the crowd drops by 90%, you hike another quarter mile, and it drops by another 90%," he said.

Just being "willing" to explore can change the experience of a national park. "You can be in a really, really crowded park and go a mile out on the trail, and you're by yourself," Matt said.

Broaden your horizon to lesser-known national or state parks.

Sometimes, the best way to beat the crowd is to avoid it entirely. A simple way to do that is to go to a national park that is slightly less popular but just as beautiful.

For example, Matt and Karen recommend visiting Sequoia and Kings Canyon, two parks relatively close to Yosemite , one of the most popular national parks in the US.

"Yosemite can be very, very crowded, but you just go a couple of hours south to these two parks, and it's like you're in Yosemite, and there's literally 1/20 of the crowd," Matt said.

Another recommendation the couple has is not to overlook monuments and state parks close to popular national parks. Utah is home to a handful of well-known parks like Zion, Arches, and Bryce Canyon, but it also has the Bureau of Land Management, home to 22.8 million acres of rivers, canyons, and mountains.

"There are some places that rival the national parks that are literally right there," Karen said.

Your best bet for a peaceful national park visit is to go offseason.

As empty nesters , Karen and Matt are in the position to visit national parks outside peak seasons.

"We're fortunate because we work for ourselves and don't have small children," Karen said. "We can go whenever."

For people like them, Karen and Matt said their top recommendation is to go in the offseason.

Still, they understand not everyone, especially parents with kids, shares that privilege. For them, they'd recommend trying their other crowd-avoiding tips or biting the bullet because, whether there are crowds or not, visiting a national park is still an "incredible" experience.

"We're just trying to encourage people to get out there and have their own adventure," Matt added.
