Extra support for young Queenslanders to compete

Queensland athletes, coaches and officials are getting a kickstart to compete at eligible state, national and international championships through the revised Emerging Athlete Pathways program that will help pay their travel and accommodation costs.

Eligible Queenslanders can now receive support before their event when they are selected, instead of after, and the minimum travel distance has been halved to 125km, so more people qualify.

Selected athletes, coaches and officials from 10 to 18 years-of-age can apply for $500 to compete or officiate at a state or state school event, $600 for a national or national school event or $800 for an international event.

Participants in a wide range of sports who need to travel at least 125km are encouraged to apply, to give them the best chance of continuing on their development journey, following their dreams and reaching their full potential.

In 2021-22 the Emerging Athlete Pathways program invested $992,900 to support Queensland athletes, coaches and officials on 2638 occasions, helping maximise Queensland’s potential on the world stage.

Sports matter.

According to this infographic created by the Aspen Institute’s Project Play , active kids are more likely to excel in school, be successful at work, have less health issues, and have children who are also active. Sports are an important tool to keep kids active, yet fewer kids are playing and staying in the game.

Aspen Institute Sports Society Project Play Infographic showing the research shows that youth sports have compounding benefits to make kids and adults active, healthy and successful

Back in the Game Campaign

As more people get vaccinated now that all adults are vaccine eligible in the U.S. and with youth sports resuming in underserved communities in accordance with local and state health guidelines, families in these communities are facing significant financial challenges to get their kids back in the game. The Back in the Game Campaign is aimed at raising funds to enable All Kids Play to identify and award through our National Grant Challenge at least one youth sports grant to a financially disadvantaged family that values youth sports in each of the 50 states including Washington D.C. The ultimate goal of the Back in the Game Campaign is to ensure that the kids helped through All Kids Play’s National Grant Challenge not only get back in the game, but thrive as student-athletes for years to come with sustained engagement in high-quality sports programs with the support of their parent(s), coaches, teammates and All Kids Play.

Sports Grant Program

The average family now spends almost $900 a year per youth athlete on sports. 1 At such a high cost, low income families are being left behind. In fact, only 23% of kids ages 6-12 from families making less than $25,000 per year played a sport on a regular basis in 2019 compared to 34% in 2012. By comparison, 43% of kids from households making $100,000 or more played sports in 2019. 2

We believe every kid who wants to play a sport should get to play a sport. Cost should not be a barrier to participation. We aim to help those in need get in the game through our financial assistance grant program.

In addition to rising costs resulting in low income families having significant need for access to high-quality sports programs, kids are quitting sports at the average age of 11, mostly because it’s not fun anymore. 3 Once All Kids Play gets kids into fun high-quality sports programs through our grant program, our team focuses on keeping them in the game with motivation and life skills education that ensure sustained engagement.

In addition, youth sports families are concerned about the mental, physical and emotional health of their kids. That is why our educational program also includes health and nutrition education to ensure that kids live a healthy and productive life. Specifically, kids are specializing in one sport earlier, with the average number of team sports played by kids ages 6-12 less than 2. 4 Specializing in one sport too early can lead to burnout, injury and quitting at an early age. Parents are also concerned about injuries, yet as of 2019, only about one third of coaches had been trained in the previous year in CPR and Basic First Aid, Concussion Management, and General Safety and Injury Prevention. 4

Education Program

Kids are more likely to stay in the game when they have a safe, healthy, and positive youth sports experience. Coach, parent and athlete education is key to creating a healthy environment in which kids enjoy sports, stay engaged and have less risk of injury. That is why we are committed to providing impactful educational materials focused on Motivation and Life Skills Education and Health and Nutrition Education.

Activate Queensland: Emerging Athlete Pathways

youth athlete travel subsidy

Do you know a talented young athlete who needs help with their sporting travel costs?

Emerging Athlete Pathways is a Queensland Government initiative that aims to assist young Queensland athletes on their pathway to elite success. The travel subsidy provides financial assistance to athletes and officials under the age of 18 who face long travel times to get to competitions.

Eligible athletes or officials who need to travel at least 250km one way to their event can apply for up to $200 for a state or state school event, $400 for a national or national school event, or $600 for an international event.

Based on community feedback, the Queensland Government has improved the subsidy, with Emerging Athlete Pathways trialling pre-event payments from January 2020 for eligible events.

By supporting young athletes, the Queensland Government aims to assist the next generation of Queensland’s sporting talent and inspire others to lead an active lifestyle.

Pathways for athletes, coaches and officials also helps ensure young athletes are attracted to and stay in Queensland as their home state, and keeps Queensland winning.

The program is now open.

It’s all part of Activate! Queensland 2019–2029, the Queensland Government’s 10-year strategy to get more Queenslanders moving, more often.

Find out more about the travel subsidy program at qld.gov.au/emergingathletepathways.

Application process

Through the community consultation process for Activate! Queensland, athletes told us it would be helpful to receive their travel subsidy before travelling.

As a result of this feedback, Emerging Athlete Pathways will see a trial of pre-event payments come into effect from 23 January 2020.

To view the current list of eligible events, check your own eligibility, or apply for the subsidy, visit qld.gov.au/emergingathletepathways.

Adding an eligible event to the events list

  • Noting that applications for the subsidy can take up to 10 weeks to process and with applicants unable to apply for pre-event payment less than 8 weeks from the event, it is vital that event nominators provide event details to Sport and Recreation well in advance to ensure they are available for pre-event payment.
  • Details can be supplied now via a full 12-month calendar of events or, as events are locked in.
  • If event details are not supplied sufficiently in advance, applicants may not be eligible for pre-payment but they can still apply for post-event payment as per the current program arrangement.
  • Applicants can apply for the subsidy up to 16 weeks prior to an event and six months post-event.

Impact of COVID-19 on Willingness to Travel for Youth Sports

Parent feelings regarding their willingness to travel impacts their perceptions toward the 12 adaptations. When looking at parent responses for those who participate in travel sports that require more than 50 miles of travel from home, 38% reported that the current pandemic makes them less willing to travel and more likely to seek opportunities to compete closer to home. In contrast, 60% reported the pandemic had no impact on their travel plans, while 2% reported the pandemic makes them more willing to travel than before.

Travel parents less willing to travel during the pandemic are represented by the dot in Figure 4 , while travel parents not changing their travel plans are represented at the end of the dotted line. Figure 4 shows that travel parents less willing to travel perceive all 12 adaptations in a more positive light, and their inclusion will add to their satisfaction. In contrast, travel parents who are not less likely to travel during the pandemic have a lower left drift for each adaptation, feeling more indifferent about each adaptation.

Impact of COVID-19 on Sports Travel Budget

The economic turmoil wrought by COVID-19 has touched nearly every aspect of American life. However, 59% of travel sports parents (n = 8,824) reported that the pandemic will not negatively impact their sports travel budget, and only 23% will experience a decrease greater than 25% in their youth sports travel budget (see Table 8 ).

American Meritocracy Is Killing Youth Sports

As young athletes from well-off families join expensive travel leagues, Derek Thompson argued recently, local leagues are left with fewer players, fewer involved parents, and fewer resources—creating a classist system.

As a longtime educator, former Notre Dame scholarship athlete (ice hockey), and parent/grandparent, I found “American Meritocracy Is Killing Youth Sports” both informative and timely. There are three trends over the past few decades that concern me and should concern us all:

1) Children are increasingly asked (in some cases required) to specialize in sports at an earlier and earlier age, thereby denying them opportunities to explore other sports and activities that often lead to lifetime enjoyment. 2) Parents are led to believe that in order for their children to excel, they must spend large amounts of money for specialized coaching, participation on travel teams, and even video presentations to “market” their child’s talents and skills to interested NCAA schools. 3) Many parents allow their own unrealized aspirations to live through their children, as time spent coaching, strolling the sidelines at a game, or sitting in the midst of a parent group in a gym or rink will readily attest. Kids growing up in this environment are almost always doomed to fail the expectations of such parents.

The odds of a young person making an NFL,NBA, WNBA, NHL, or MLB team vary, but they are always quite low.

We need to encourage excellence. At the same time, we need to be realistic. The vast majority of kids playing sports today will not earn an athletic scholarship, let alone a professional paycheck. Let’s encourage participation among all sectors of our population, rich and poor, talented and not so talented. The greatest lessons learned in sports have nothing to do with professional contracts and NCAA scholarships. They are about fostering discipline, resilience, teamwork, good health, and, yes, lifelong enjoyment of a multitude of sports. Furthermore, they are a terrific way of connecting all sectors of society.

Gary Little Vancouver, B.C.

In our community, starting after age 8 or 9, depending on the sport, it is difficult to find leagues where you can practice more than once a week. Lack of affordable gym and field space is one of the contributors to this, and it’s not mentioned in the article. Cities raise money with these fees, and hence prioritize leagues with money.

Cathy Smith Boulder, Colo.

I have three children participating in youth sports. The situation you’re describing concerning club teams is not the cause for decreased participation in youth sports for lower-socioeconomic-status families. Transportation, money, and time have a larger impact.

The article ignores the extensive work carried out by AYSO soccer and Little League baseball. These organizations provide affordable opportunities for many children.

Norman Bunch Tucson, Ariz.

Derek Thompson replies:

I really appreciate these emails. I don’t have children. Even if I did, I would be in no position to question the individual local experience of parents, many of whom say travel teams have hurt local sports participation, and others who insist this is not the case. But I’ll simply say this: As a rule, I distrust any mono-causal explanations for complex phenomena. The decline of youth-sports participation surely has something to do with the popularity of video games and other at-home media. But the rise of childhood-enrichment spending in the U.S., the gap between enrichment spending in rich and poor families, and the way this trend has manifested in the growth of high-cost travel teams in a nation of stark household-income inequality are unmistakable factors in the hollowing out of local sports leagues.

The pros and cons of travel sports

Travel teams can be fulfilling and help you or your child develop. but is it worth the costs and effort.

youth athlete travel subsidy

By Alyssa Bradford

Travel sports can be great for children or youth to learn life lessons, exercise and make friendships. However, being a part of the team is also costly and time consuming.

So should you or your child play a travel sport? It depends on what you and your family are looking for. As a general suggestion, have a sincere discussion about expectations and what sacrifices the family will need to make.

For specific information and data for the pros and cons of travel sports, see below.

What is a travel sport?

A travel sports team features elite youth athletes who compete and travel extensively for games, competitions or tournaments. They are associated with private or club sport programs, distinct from recreational or school leagues, per Verywell Family .

There are multiple sports that offer travel teams to families and youth. Here are some of the most popular, according to Groundwork :

  • Basketball.
  • Field hockey.
  • Gymnastics.
  • Ice hockey.
  • Volleyball.
  • Water polo.

The pros of travel sports including improvement of skills, friendships, daily activity, life lessons and traveling.

Takes skills to next level

Travel sports offer higher-level competition, providing a pathway from recreational leagues to varsity teams. This can make it tempting for athletes wanting to get onto high school or college teams, per Rocky Top Sports World .

Builds friendships

The extensive time spent with teammates during practices, games and tournaments fosters friendships and create memories. This bond is particularly beneficial for reserved or shy children, helping them to feel belonging and grow in social skills, according to Rocky Top .

Daily activity

For those ages 5 to 17, 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activities should be completed throughout a day. This helps strengthen hearts, muscles and bones, per the World Health Organization .

According to The Everymom , travel sports allow for frequent activity and exercise for children and youth to stay healthy. Plus, it is usually more enjoyable than going to the gym.

Learning lessons

The Everymom also shares valuable lessons that one can learn from travel sports:

  • Perseverance.
  • Committing to promises.
  • Knowing how to work as a team.
  • Standing up for yourself.
  • Working on and succeeding in goals.

According to Rocky Top Sports World , athletes on travel teams get to explore new locations and compete against opponents from other regions, states and sometimes countries. Families often seize this opportunity to turn sports travel into a vacation by aligning it with tournaments or events.

Cons of travel sports include costs, time spent, burnout, risk of injury and possible conflict with religion.

Expensive costs

The costs of travel sports might change depending on what sport you play, the team and where you live.

Looking at the 15 most popular travel sports above, Groundwork also shares the average costs per spot on the team.

  • Baseball: $1,894.
  • Basketball: $822.
  • Cheer: $2,307.
  • Dance: $2,099.
  • Field hockey: $1,186.
  • Football: $349.
  • Gymnastics: $2,778.
  • Ice hockey: $2,529.
  • Lacrosse: $1,352.
  • Rugby: $281.
  • Soccer: $1,535.
  • Softball: $1,258.
  • Swimming: $1,325.
  • Volleyball: $3,159.
  • Water polo: $1,439.

According to Groundwork , these fees do not include travel, equipment, clothing and other expenses. “Parents can end up spending $10,000 annually for their child to participate at this level.”

It’s time consuming

Children’s sports activities can dominate schedules, with parents and children traveling extensively to attend games and tournaments, per Character Development and Leadership .

According to The Everymom , as a child, the author’s typical life while playing travel sports included three to five nights of long practices per week and two to three days for an away tournament almost every weekend.

As she grew older, the author found less time for hobbies or socializing with friends, as schoolwork demanded more of her free time, per The Everymom .

Burnout is possible

Burnout entails both mental and physical exhaustion, resulting in loss of interest in meaningful activities, according to Darling Downs Health .

With travel sports, burnout can be possible because of the constant time and energy dedicated.

Zipdo has important statistics related to burnout and sports:

  • Seventy percent of U.S. kids quit organized sports at age 13 due to burnout.
  • Boys are more likely to drop out (36%) than girls (31%) due to burnout.
  • Three out of four athletes have faced moderate to severe burnout.
  • U.S. youth athletes practicing over three consecutive hours are 125% more prone to burnout.
  • Over 45% of specialized youth athletes quit due to burnout.
  • Burnout in children playing travel sports surged by 50% in 2017.
  • Athletes training over 16 hours weekly with inadequate sleep face a 70% higher risk of burnout.

Greater risk of injury

According to Sadler Sports , more than 3.5 million youth sports injuries require medical treatment each year. Engaging in youth travel sports, as a lot of time is dedicated to the sport, can elevate the risk of overuse injuries.

Due to playing consistently, athletes can also sustain injuries that last throughout their lives, such as knee or head injuries, per The Everymom .

May conflict with religion

Depending on how you and your family worship, check to see if what is expected or required makes you feel comfortable. Here are some ways religion may conflict with sports, per Case IQ .

  • Required tournaments often play on Saturdays and Sundays. Question if one or both of those days are sacred.
  • Some religions might not be allowed to mix with the opposite gender. Besides teammates, travel sports include meeting with coaches and staff.
  • Is the sport uniform okay? Does it allow you to wear religious coverings? Is the uniform too revealing or does it showcase sponsors that you do not believe in?
  • Does the team or coach accommodate as necessary for religious practices, such as easier practice when fasting or a quiet area for religious observation?

Should you or your child play a travel sport?

According to Verywell Family , before committing to a team, have an open discussion with your family about the sacrifices involved and whether you are prepared to make them. Here are some general questions to ask, besides looking at the pros and cons above:

  • Are you familiar with the coach or coaches and do they offer the right environment for you or your child?
  • Are you or your child a good team player?
  • Are you or your child passionate and dedicated about the sport?
  • How much can the family financially spend? How much does the travel team cost?
  • How much time can you or your family give away? Can you or your children continue to complete school or family assignments?

If you, your child or your family feel comfortable with the answers given above, go for it! While people may continue to do travel sports throughout their youth, it does not mean someone can’t stop if wanted.

Want to get onto a travel sports team?

If the team requires tryouts, it can be scary for you or your child.

Before the tryouts look at some of these tips from the Thunder Soccer Club , perfect for all sports:

  • Think positively and be confident.
  • Put things in perspective. If you make the team, great; if not, that’s okay. What will you do for training next time if you don’t make it yet?
  • Meditate, pray, take deep breaths and do what is necessary to calm down.
  • Eat a light meal with carbohydrates before tryouts to get energy.
  • Drink plenty of water weeks before tryouts begin. Hydration will help in performance.
  • Get to the tryouts early.
  • Bring all of the equipment you need. Consider packing beforehand so you don’t forget.
