5 Island Destinations You Can Visit Without Worrying About Zika

Summer Hull

Mosquito-borne diseases, such as Zika, are a very real issue for travelers (and, of course, locals). But for families, Zika has been an especially concerning virus, especially in 2016 when there were a half million suspected cases . Thankfully, those numbers have come way down in the last 12 months.

Though Zika symptoms are generally flu-like and mild, women who are pregnant or who plan to become pregnant in the near future need to be extremely cautious when traveling to areas where Zika-carrying mosquitos bite. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) , contracting the Zika virus during pregnancy can cause a litany of serious problems for the developing fetus. The CDC states that these can include:

  • Severe microcephaly
  • Decreased brain tissue
  • Damage (such as scarring) to the eye
  • Joints with limited range of motion
  • Too much muscle, which can restrict movement

Many families understandably don't want a vacation to compromise the health of their unborn child. Back in 2016, some airlines were even providing refunds for travelers with plans to visit areas known to have the Zika virus. Though Zika is no longer the headline-catcher it was two years ago as it has subsided in many areas as quickly as it spiked, it is still a real issue that many families take into consideration when deciding where to travel.

Zika Is Still Out There

The (very) good news is that, according to the CDC , zero local mosquito-borne Zika virus transmissions were reported within the United States in 2018. However, there were 148 new cases in the US Territories of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. In addition to transmission within some island-based US Territories, Zika is still considered an issue when abroad. A small but quantifiable number of US residents continue to contract Zika while traveling (72 reported cases in 2018). Remember: Zika can also be transmitted sexually , so even if only one partner travels to an area with Zika, there can be complications for families eager to expand.

So what is a beach-loving family to do if they want to travel somewhere warm and tropical — even subtropical or temperate — where A edes mosquitoes thrive? Well, one option is to go somewhere else entirely, where the climate is cooler and less humid. But another option is to zoom in carefully on a map of the areas the CDC identifies as having a risk of Zika .

At first glance, everything south of the United States, other than Chile and Uruguay, is essentially purple, which means they are areas where travelers are at risk of Zika infection.

zakia travel

Take a closer look, however, and you will see there are some non-purple areas below the border — even within the Caribbean.

Caribbean destinations with no risk of Zika

While it can change at any time, as of the writing of this article, the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas , Guadeloupe and Martinique are all characterized by the CDC as having no known risk of Zika from mosquitoes. In the case of the Bahamas, it was removed from the list of areas with known risk in early 2018 , as no new cases had been reported for 12 months.

And north of the Caribbean Sea, Bermuda also has the all-clear from the CDC.

For points-oriented family travelers concerned about Zika, this may again open up options for Caribbean stays at properties such as the Atlantis, Paradise Island ; the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar ; and the Westin Grand Cayman .

zakia travel

My own family has had a tremendous time visiting the Bahamas and the Cayman Islands, so I'm very relieved they have been labeled Zika-free zones by the CDC. I personally know families who hope to have more children in the near future that are now actively planning trips to these Caribbean (and near Caribbean) destinations almost entirely because they are listed as having no current risk of Zika transmission from local mosquitoes.

Advice for families concerned about Zika

Just because certain destinations are labeled Zika-free on the CDC website, doesn't mean travelers shouldn't still exercise caution. According to Dr. Rajiv Narula , MD and founder of the International Travel Health Consultants, there are other factors people contemplating travel to an area that may have a higher Zika risk should consider.

For one, it isn't all about Zika, Narula said. The same daytime-biting mosquitoes from the Aedes genus that can live indoors and carry Zika can also carry dengue and chikungunya, so take precautions even if Zika isn't a major concern for you and your family.

Travelers can also be proactive about mosquito prevention. When indoors, use air-conditioning and/or netting. On sun-exposed skin, use 30% DEET and/or lemon eucalyptus. And on your clothing and in your room, spray Permethrin. This should last up to six washes on your clothing.

Narula does not recommend traveling to areas listed by the CDC with a Zika risk if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant within three to six months of your visit. (The CDC has reduced its recommendation for how long to wait to become pregnant after traveling to an area with Zika to three months, down from six.)

But keep in mind that conditions can change quickly. Narula suggests that travelers take mosquito-bite-preventing precautions regardless of whether or not your specific destination is on the current CDC Zika risk list. This is especially true because, again, there may be other mosquito-borne diseases in that destination beyond Zika.

In other words, before you head to the Caribbean or a similar island getaway with your family, consult your doctor and have a good mosquito-repellent plan in place before you land — just in case.

To help you stay safe from mosquitos and plan trips to island destinations currently deemed Zika-free, we curated a list of helpful articles to get your family headed in the right direction.

Zika Travel Recommendations by Traveler Type and Country Category

Know before you go! Zika continues to be a problem in many parts of the world. There is no vaccine to prevent infection. Zika is spread mostly by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito ( Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus ). Zika can be passed from a pregnant woman to her fetus. Infection during pregnancy can cause certain birth defects.

Your decision to delay or cancel travel is personal and complex. In making this decision, consider your travel destination and your ability to protect yourself from mosquito bites. CDC recommends that pregnant women and couples planning a pregnancy within the next 3 months consult with a health care provider in making this decision.

Recommendations for US Residents Traveling Abroad

1 These countries have a potential risk of Zika, but we do not have accurate information on the current level of risk. As a result, detection and reporting of new outbreaks may be delayed.

2 Because Aedes aegypti mosquitoes (the mosquitoes that most commonly spreads Zika) are present in these countries, Zika has the potential to be present, along with other mosquito-borne infections. Detection and reporting of cases and outbreaks may be delayed.

3 No Aedes aegypti mosquitoes (the mosquitoes that most commonly spreads Zika) have been reported in these countries. However, other Aedes species mosquitoes have been known to spread Zika, and these may be present.

Areas with Zika outbreaks (red areas):

Areas with current or past transmission but no Zika outbreak (purple areas): American Samoa, Angola, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Aruba, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Bonaire, Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Burkina Faso, Burma, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Cayman Islands, Central African Republic, Colombia, Cook Islands, Costa Rica, Cuba, Curacao, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Easter Island, Ecuador, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, France, French Guiana, French Polynesia, Gabon, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Martinique, Mexico, Montserrat, New Caledonia, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Palau, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Saba, Saint Barthelemy, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Martin, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Senegal, Singapore, Sint Eustatius, Sint Maarten, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Thailand, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos, Uganda, United States (Continental US), United States Virgin Islands, Vanuatu, Venezuela, Vietnam

Where To Eat & Drink In Buckhead

Spanish-Latin American dishes

The Best Things We Ate This Month

We’ve got a whole section of restaurants that we recommend for people dining alone, but Zakia isn’t one of ‘em. Taking in the grandiose views and as many delicious plates as possible is best enjoyed with a group, even if that group happens to be family who don’t all necessarily jive.

Now, the food at Zakia won’t result in the type of healing miracles we learned about in Sunday school. But we’re pretty convinced a family-style Lebanese meal here could help mend even the deepest of family feuds when the table nods in quiet agreement after the first pleasing bite of lamb shank, a standout in a city full of lamb dishes.

The menu is stuffed with small plates, mostly traditional Lebanese dishes based on recipes the co-owners grew up eating (in fact, the Buckhead spot is named after their grandmother). And if their grandmother was regularly cooking up labneh and batata harra this good, we get why there's a glowing portrait of her above the dining space.

Zakia image

Family-style dining can feel messy. But Zakia feels polished and grand while still providing space that feels intimate for a small group. Three separate dining areas, each more impressive than the last, bring this 6,000 square-foot space to life. The main room has a four-tiered chandelier and is bordered by a series of ornate pillars that has us Googling the breadth of ancient Rome imperialism (yes to Tyre, but et tu, Buckhead?). And the back room is lined with windows spilling natural light onto a ceiling dotted with dangling white floral strings for a more ethereal dining environment. We know Buckhead tends to lean bougie, but even your well-to-do in-laws will be dazzled by this space.

Once you’ve absorbed the beautiful setting, it’s time to  break bread, folks—the warm, fresh-baked, fluffy pita kind. Which also happens to make the perfect vehicle for the creamy hummus topped with ground lamb that should be everyone’s first order. And you might marvel at how well the cod sayadieh can make dinner with your actual family copacetic. But even if sharing thirteen plates of delicious takes on Lebanese standards doesn’t mend fractured family ties, you can at least have a dinner you’ll actually enjoy.

Food Rundown

Zakia image

Lamb Ragu Hummus

Ground lamb topped with chickpeas as a garnish sits in a bed of incredibly creamy hummus. Aleppo pepper sprinkled on top gives a tiny burst of flavor to complement the savory lamb and hummus. And their fresh baked, light and fluffy pita bread is the perfect vessel to devour the dip.

Zakia image

Red Wine Braised Lamb Shank

Lamb chops and shanks have become a trendy ATL food item, but we’re not sure we’ve had any as good as this. One light poke of the fork and the tender meat falls away from the bone. With a deep, rich flavor it’s easy to imagine this is topped with gravy but a quick double take reveals that’s just the magic of the juicy braise.

Zakia image

This labneh is sprinkled with za’atar and artistically doused with a light mint oil. All this combines for a fresh palate cleanser in between bites of the other tasty apps.

Zakia image

Charred Octopus

The octopus here were on a strict strength training regimen to bulk up because these tentacles are thick and meaty. The charred exterior gives way to a surprisingly, perfectly tender interior. And be sure to dive into every bit of the fresh lemon labneh it’s served on.

Zakia image

Batata Harra

Their take on batata harra differs slightly from typical renditions. It’s a fried rectangular block with thinly sliced layers of potato. The crispy exterior gives a nice crunch while a little pool of harissa chermoula gives the dish an herby sweetnesses that we wish we could bottle up.

Zakia image

Cod Sayadieh

On the surface, this hunk of cod sits on a bed of Carolina gold rice and a light, buttery sauce and doesn’t look that impressive. But one bite of the flaky, moist fish is like eating melted butter. It’s a well-executed yet simple fish dish that somehow manages to be a standout part of the meal.

Zakia image

Baba Ghanoush

Their traditional baba ghanoush has all the usual suspects—eggplant, lemon, tahini. But the added flair of pomegranate seeds sprinkled on top gives the dish a pop of sweetness.

Zakia image

The knafeh is the perfect way to end a meal. Cheese baked in a light, sweet dough for a crispy exterior is made complete with a drizzle of sugary syrup that helps soften it enough so our forks can slide in without effort. Cheese lovers will dream about this one for days, but this dish is rich, so lightweights shouldn’t embark on this solo.

Everything from the light, airy kitchen down to the drinks on the menu is influenced by Lebanese culture. The eatery is one of the very best Mediterranean restaurants in Atlanta.

The eatery is a modern concept that emphasizes family, including the restaurant’s name: Zakia is inspired by the grandmother of Jonathan and Ryan Akly, the eatery’s owners.

Situated in Buckhead, Zakia boasts a 6,000-square-foot space that seats more than 200 guests in the dining room, bar/lounge, and private dining areas. There’s also a second-floor private room that accommodates up to 60 people.

Invisible Cities Announces New Partnership with Trainsplit

Invisible Cities are delighted to announce a new partnership with train ticketing company Trainsplit , the pioneers of the split ticketing functionality that allows customers to travel more cheaply. Invisible Cities is the award winning social enterprise that trains people who have experienced homelessness to become tour guides of their own city. They deliver unique walking tours of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, York and Cardiff with plans underway to expand to more locations. This year they received a People’s Champion accolade from National Geographic and in 2021 were awarded Best Community Tour in the World by Lonely Planet. Customers travelling to Invisible Cities locations and anywhere else across the UK will be able to use the Trainsplit booking engine to find the cheapest rail tickets.  Under the partnership Trainsplit will also be covering the cost of train travel for Invisible Cities guides and staff as part of their work to raise awareness, offer training and support and launch in new cities. Last year Trainsplit customers saved on average 20% more by buying split tickets.  Since its inception, they’ve saved over £42m, in many cases making it more affordable than travelling by car.  Research by the Rail Delivery Group shows that taking the train instead of a car can also be 10 times better for the environment. Zakia Moulaoui Guery, Founder of Invisible Cities said “We are very excited to be working with Trainsplit. Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do and we want to encourage our guests to travel by train between our beautiful cities. If they can save money along the way as well, then this is even better. “  George Sikking Chief Executive of Trainsplit added “We are really pleased to be appointed as the official rail ticket provider for Invisible Cities.  Zakia and her team do an amazing job and, as lots of our customers use split ticketing to save on city breaks, it will be great to offer them the chance to take a unique look around their destination with an Invisible Cities guide. We also love the idea of being part of a scheme that helps people who have experienced homelessness to change their own lives.  I’m sure that any Trainsplit customer who books a tour will find it a fascinating experience.  If it helps to change the attitudes and perceptions toward people experiencing homelessness then that has to be a good thing too”.  To take advantage of cheaper fares and travel more sustainably, head to the Invisible Cities rail booking site here >>  https://trainsplit.com/?aff=invisible Invisible Cities Contact:  Catherine Warrilow – e: [email protected] / t: 07976 294754 Trainsplit Contact:  Kip Parker – e: [email protected] / t: 0771 333 0280

LED light therapy for skin is trendy—but does it work?

Dermatologists explain the science behind the wildly popular treatment, which is now available at home—for a steep price.

A model poses for a portrait with a red light LED mask designed for consumer use in a studio against a blue background

In the mid-1960s, a Hungarian physician named Endre Mester shined a low-power laser on the shaved skin of a mouse. Though he was testing for impacts on tumor growth, he observed an unexpected side effect —the red light seemed to stimulate hair regrowth and, in later studies, wound healing.

Sixty years later, this accidental discovery has found its way into a booming market for clinical procedures and at-home devices using light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

Also possible with cold lasers, "low level" or "low power" light therapy requires a certain power level (measured in milliwatts per centimeter) to be effective, without the damaging heat of high-powered lights. From face and full-body masks to portable wands, low-level light therapy products promise all sorts of anti-aging, rejuvenating, and wound-healing benefits.

“There’s a lot of hype in the industry,” says Daniel Barolet, a dermatological laser therapy researcher and clinician, and an adjunct professor at McGill University.

But are these devices—which can cost hundreds, even thousands of dollars—worth the price? Experts discuss the benefits and limitations of light therapy, and what consumers should know before making the investment.

The science of light therapy

In the decades since Mester’s groundbreaking mice trials, research and development of phototherapy has taken off—with promising results.

Today, LED light therapy, or “photobiomodulation” (PBM) as it’s more accurately known, uses gentle, low-level light within the visible spectrum—typically blue, red, or near-infrared—to stimulate natural physiological processes. Or, as Barolet says, PBM just means “using light to give our cells a little nudge in the right direction.”

LIMITED TIME OFFER

Receive up to 2 bonus issues, with any paid gift subscription!

For much of human history, we would have gotten these benefits directly from the sun —but now we’re spending more time inside, with often cool-toned indoor lighting.

“When we're using photobiomodulation, we just cut the bad UV rays. We're just using the healing stuff,” Barolet says. “It’s biomimicking, but you harness what’s good for your skin, and you delete what’s not good for your skin.”

A model poses for a portrait with a red light LED mask designed for consumer use in a studio against a blue background

While the exact mechanisms are not yet fully understood , PBM therapy has been shown to produce a range of positive effects. Blue light, for instance, can be used to treat acne and may mitigate other skin disorders by reducing inflammation . When blue light is absorbed by the skin, it activates the production of toxic free radicals which, over the course of several days, kill off the acne-causing P. acnes bacteria.

Glynis Ablon, a dermatologist and associate clinical professor at UCLA, says she’s seen dramatic effects in her patients undergoing blue light therapy. “What they'll notice, just from these LEDs alone, is that their acne gets better, that the level of inflammatory lesions reduces, that their overall skin just starts to look better.”

Red and near-infrared light, on the other hand, have longer wavelengths that can target the skin cells or travel deeper into the body . When light in this range penetrates the cells, Barolet says, it “kicks off a chain reaction” in the mitochondria. This metabolic process produces several important molecules, including ATP and nitric oxide , that are critical for basic bodily functions like energy production and healthy blood flow.

The application of red and near-infrared light has a domino effect, stimulating collagen production and blood circulation . On a surface level, this can speed healing of wounds , such as burns or ulcers, and even reduce signs of aging , like wrinkles and brown spots.

While the skin is the largest and most visible organ in the body, all cells theoretically can enjoy a boost from red or near-infrared light therapy.

Generally speaking, the tissues that will improve the most are those in a state of depletion or disorder—such as sunburnt skin—according to Alexander Wunsch, a physician and photobiology expert. Of course, light therapy isn’t a panacea for treating skin or any other conditions.

“There is real science to it and it does work clinically,” says Zakia Rahman, a clinical professor of dermatology at the Stanford School of Medicine, “but it’s not going to have the level of dramatic effect that more aggressive treatments in a medical setting would have.”

Still, LEDs have distinct benefits—they’re non-invasive, pain-free, and essentially harmless . Prolonged exposure to blue light, which is near the UV spectrum, may cause skin damage, aging or irritation , but long-term research is still limited. With red and near-infrared, the only potential concerns are for those with sun allergies or highly sensitive eyes, according to Barolet.

“Think of photobiomodulation like your morning cup of coffee…but with light,” Barolet says. “It's like a wake-up call that gets all those tiny cellular processes up and running, helping the body to repair, rejuvenate, and energize itself.”

How should you pick your LED device?

Clinics around the world offer PBM therapy for all sorts of cosmetic and medical purposes. Office devices are generally more powerful, producing better and faster results. But for those who want to do their treatment at home, there’s a market full of options.

When it comes to choosing an LED device, experts agree that the most meaningful factor to consider is the output intensity.

“There’s a lot of scams out there…most of the time, energies are very, very low,” Ablon says. For red light, she looks for devices that emit 105 milliwatts per centimeter, but for blue light, the intensity can be lower. “If it’s somewhere in that 40 range, I’m ok, but if it ends up being 10, it’s probably not doing anything.”

Barolet also warns consumers to avoid devices that promote “a rainbow” of lights, such as green, yellow, and purple. When it comes to health, he says, the only wavelengths proven to be effective are red, near-infrared, and blue.

It’s important to note that not all LED products on the market have been greenlit by the FDA. Wunsch advises consumers to look for 510(k) Clearance , “which gives you at least the information that this device has been evaluated”—though not tested—by the FDA for safety and effectiveness.

Barolet notes that, while the research supporting light therapy is robust, scientists are still perfecting their “recipe”—the ideal wavelengths, dosage, intensity, and proximity—for different health goals. In some cases, LED therapy works best in concert with other interventions, like pairing red light treatment with anti-aging cream, he says. While not a replacement for products like sunscreen or prescription retinoids, Rahman says that LEDs “can work well in your entire skin regimen.”

Ultimately, whether undergoing a clinical procedure or using at-home masks, experts advise people to stay the course of the treatment and not expect immediate results. While wound healing can happen faster, Wunsch says, the effects on healthy, normally aging skin can be slow and cumulative.   “You have to invest in the compliance in the first phase, and you will get your rewards in five or ten years.”
