Cruises from/to Palma de Mallorca, Spain

Palma de mallorca, spain cruise port.

  • Serra de Tramuntana is a popular UNESCO World Heritage Site that stretches across a large chunk of the island’s territory. The wild and stunning view of mountains submerging into the sea makes Palma de Mallorca a popular tourist attraction. As you begin your hike to Puig Major, you will come to understand why it is considered the highest peak on the island of Mallorca.
  • An impressive piece of architecture lies in the heart of the city. This Gothic Roman Catholic cathedral with a nave that is 44 meters tall; the highest of all Gothic cathedrals, is known as Cathedral (Le Seu). Parts of its interior were redesigned by famous Catalan architect, Antoni Gaudi.
  • Taste a few of the local delicacies in the cruise port of Palma de Mallorca by visiting Mercat Del Olivar. This is a lively market noted for its fresh seafood and well-laid out stalls. Here, you will mingle with local shoppers and get a real sense of the culture in a “non-touristy” environment.

Palma de Mallorca Cruise Port Guide

A Palma de Mallorca cruise brings you to the elegant capital of Spain’s Balearic Islands, set around the broad sweep of the Bay of Palma. The mighty La Seu Cathedral, towering over the old Gothic Quarter, dominates the skyline, while the entire bay is filled with yachts. Wooded hills form a backdrop, which lead to the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains that form the spine along the west of this surprisingly diverse island.

A stop in Palma de Mallorca on a Spain cruise is an opportunity to learn more about the culture of the Balearics. Lose yourself in the atmospheric Gothic Quarter behind the cathedral. Head to an old country mansion to learn about olive oil production. Marvel at the city’s artistic heritage at the Joan Miró Foundation. Drink cocktails in a palm-shaded garden or a hip rooftop bar, or relax on a sandy beach. This is one of the great joys of Palma de Mallorca; you don’t have to choose, as a day here will give you both sightseeing and beach time.

Top sights & attractions on cruises to palma de mallorca, la seu cathedral.

Palma’s mighty cathedral is a landmark of the city, its flying buttresses and delicate pinnacles adding to the sense of drama. La Seu took hundreds of years to build, incorporating the Mediterranean Gothic style blended with baroque and contemporary elements. The beautiful rose window is Europe’s largest, while part of the interior was created by a disciple of the famous Catalan architect, Antoni Gaudi. For sweeping views of the city and sea, climb the 280 steps to the roof terraces.

Almudaina Palace

The Royal Palace of La Almudaina, next to Palma’s cathedral, is the official residence of the Spanish royals when they’re in Mallorca. There has been a fortified palace on this site since the 13th century when the Moorish rulers built a castle here after their conquest of Spain. What you see today reflects the Gothic style with elements of the original Moorish design. The lush S’Hort del Rei gardens, with splashing fountains, are a wonderful place to relax in the shade after your visit.

Bellver Castle

The circular Castell de Bellver was built in the 14th century on a pine-forested hill high above the city, designed by Pere Salva, the architect responsible for the Almudaina Palace. You’ll find three chunky towers overlooking a central courtyard, which is lined on the upper level by Gothic arches. Although Bellver means “lovely view”, the castle has a dark history; it served as a prison for centuries. Today, it’s used for concerts and houses the city’s municipal museum.

Things to do in palma de mallorca, cycle around the bay.

Palma is a wonderful city for exploring on two wheels, with a cycle trail leading all the way around the bay. Join a guided tour and learn about the city’s history while getting some exercise. You’ll see the cathedral, the Almudaina Palace, the Plaza Mayor square, the tangled streets of the Gothic Quarter, the yacht marinas, and parts of the medieval walls. There’s always a chance to stop for tasty tapas, too.

Ride the Soller Vintage Train

Palma is connected to the mountain town of Sóller by an enchanting vintage train that rattles up through the hills, passing olive groves and pinewoods. Sóller itself is an elegant old town hemmed in by craggy mountains. Its ancient sandstone buildings glow in the sunlight, and the streets are lined with chic craft shops, galleries, and boutiques. A 1912-built wooden tram connects the town to its pretty port, where you can eat fresh seafood and watch the fishing boats bobbing on the water.

Relax on the Beach

Mallorca is fringed by more than 200 beautiful beaches, from long stretches of golden sand to secluded rocky coves with aquamarine water. Several beaches are within easy reach of Palma, including Platja de San Pere Antoni, just beyond the cathedral, and Portixol, a sweep of sand in front of a little fishing village. West of the city, Cala Major is a pretty sandy bay fringed with palm trees. Chiringuitos (seasonal bars) line the beach, serving tapas and cold drinks.

Top Food & Drink in Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca has a thriving culinary scene that fuses hearty Mallorcan dishes with innovative international styles. Look out for arros brut , a rich rice stew with vegetables, spices, and seasonal meats. A bunyol de forat is a fried potato donut sprinkled with sugar, while ensaimada is a fluffy pastry filled with anything from pumpkin to cream or chocolate.

Pa amb oli is a delicious start to any meal—local bread is rubbed with garlic, fresh tomatoes, and olive oil. You’ll find restaurants all over Palma, from high-end establishments to seasonal chiringuitos on the beaches, as well as tapas bars. You can eat in the markets, too; try the Mercat de l’Olivar for eye-popping displays of fruit and vegetables and a variety of tiny restaurants, or the smaller Santa Catalina, where offerings include sushi, tapas, and oysters.

Culture & History of Palma de Mallorca

The city now known as Palma de Mallorca has a long and varied history. The Romans established a camp in the area around 120 BC, and some suggest the city's name, Palma, may come from the Roman consul who conquered the island or from the abundance of palm trees in the area. The city was later occupied by the Moors, who were present between 902 AD and 1229 AD, until Jaume I of Aragon reconquered the city.

Today, Palma is a stylish and bustling city that attracts visitors all year round, with a peak during the summer months. The local dialect, Mallorquí, a derivative of Catalan, is spoken alongside Catalan and Spanish, the co-official languages of the Balearic Islands. English is also commonly spoken due to the city's popularity among tourists and expats. Life in Palma moves at a slower pace than on the mainland, with many businesses observing the traditional afternoon siesta.

Palma de Mallorca Cruise Port Facilities & Location

Ships visiting Palma de Mallorca dock at the well-equipped Port Estacio Maritima, on the opposite side of the bay from the cathedral. You’ll find restrooms, tourist information, taxis, Wi-Fi, a couple of cafés, and some souvenir shops here. The walk into the city center is pleasant, as you trace the curve of the bay, but it will take 30 to 40 minutes.

Transportation in Palma de Mallorca

Buses and taxis will take you from the Estacio Maritima (the cruise port) to the city center and beyond; a bus network connects the whole island. If you want to go to Sóller, check the times of the vintage train that runs from Palma and make sure the journey gets you back to the ship on time. Better still, join a shore excursion. One of the best ways to get around is by bicycle; there are bike lanes all over the city, so you won’t have to negotiate the traffic. Join a cycling tour for the best experience.

Shopping in Palma de Mallorca

Palma is an excellent place for shopping. You’ll find designer stores along the posh Passeig des Born in the city center—leather purses and sandals are often a good buy. El Corte Ingles is Spain’s most famous department store; Palma has three branches, the largest on Plaza España.

Beyond fashion, things to buy in Palma include cultured pearls grown on the island, olive oil and olive oil products, almonds, also grown on the island, and flor de sel salt from the local salt pans, as well as pretty, rustic pottery.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The currency of Spain is the Euro. Most places take credit or debit cards, but you may find cash useful for shopping in markets or leaving tips. There are ATMs all over the city. Spain doesn’t have a strong tipping culture, although 10% is normal in restaurants if service is not already included. You can round up the fare for taxi drivers and tip good tour guides 5 to 10 Euros per person.

Texas mother arrested after allegedly leaving young children alone to take a cruise

cruises leaving palma today

A Texas woman was arrested after allegedly leaving her children at home alone to take a cruise.

Lakesha Woods Williams, 29, left her 8-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter by themselves in their Houston apartment to go on vacation on April 4, according to a criminal complaint.

She is charged with abandoning a child with intent to return.

Deputies with the Harris County Constable’s Office made a wellness check on Tuesday following a call for service. A witness told them that neighbors in the complex were concerned about the safety of two kids left on their own in one of the units. The witness said other residents had seen Williams leaving with bags and luggage and did not see her come back.

“The apartment was in complete disarray and had trash and left-over food all over the unit,” the document said. There was a “very potent smell of urine” inside as well.

“No adults were present supervising the juveniles, and none appeared to have been present since the Defendant’s departure,” the document continued. Deputies also found a camera in the apartment that Williams used to watch and talk to the kids during her trip, and her son had a phone he used to text her.

The document did not specify which cruise line Williams sailed with or where she went. “Deputies tried contacting the Defendant to make the scene, but she was not cooperating and was switching up her story on her whereabouts,” the document said.

The Houston Fire Department was called to ensure the children “were in good health and not malnourished,” and Child Protective Services reported to the scene before releasing the children to their aunt.

An attorney for Williams was not listed.

Woman dead after bus crashes into pedestrians at Honolulu cruise ship terminal

Five pedestrians were taken to the hospital, police said.

One woman has died and 10 others were injured after a shuttle bus crashed into the transportation area outside a Honolulu cruise terminal Friday, according to police.

The ship, Carnival Miracle, was on a 15-day journey, departing Long Beach, California, on April 6, according to Carnival Cruise Line. Nine of the people hit by the vehicle were cruise ship passengers.

PHOTO: In this screen grab from a video, law enforcement officials are shown at the scene where nine Carnival Miracle guests were hit by a shuttle bus in the transportation area, in Honolulu, Hawaii, on April 12, 2024.

"Sadly, one guest has died from her injuries. She was traveling with her husband, who was also injured and is expected to recover. Members of the Carnival Care Team are assisting the guests. Our thoughts are with the guests affected and their loved ones," Carnival Cruise Line said in a statement to ABC News.

A 57-year-old man was dropping off customers at pier 2 when a bystander told him that his vehicle was moving forward. He then jumped into the drivers seat, trying to stop the vehicle, but he accidentally pressed the gas pedal instead of the brakes, colliding with two concrete barriers and eleven pedestrians, according to the Honolulu Police Department.

Five pedestrians were transported to the hospital -- one of whom was later pronounced dead and four others are in good condition. Six other pedestrians refused treatment on the scene, police said.

According to police, speed does not appear to be a contributing factor in the collision and it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anti-Arab hate, harassment and threats loom over this year’s Arab American Heritage Month

One of the the most high-profile incidents was the shooting in Vermont of three Palestinian men, including Hisham Awartani, left.

Arab American Heritage Month is intended to commemorate and honor the achievements of the some of the roughly 3.7 million members of the community residing in the U.S.

But this year, many Arab Americans don’t feel inclined to celebrate.

Instances of anti-Arab hate and sentiment have been on the rise in the U.S. since the start of the war in Gaza in October, according to experts, who have received an influx of reports.

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) said it received 2,500 reports of anti-Arab hate from October to March, a sharp uptick from the under 500 reports it received in the same time period last year. The Council on American Islamic-Relations also reported receiving the highest number of bias reports in its 30-year history in 2023, with nearly half of them coming in the final three months of the year following the escalation of violence in Gaza. While not all Arabs are Muslim, “Muslim and Arab identities have long been conflated, particularly by those who seek to villainize both, making anti-Muslim hate part and parcel of anti-Arab” racism, according to the organization.

Bias incidents against Arabs range from verbal to fatal. The most high-profile incidents include the  fatal stabbing  of Wadea Al-Fayoume, a 6-year-old Palestinian American boy, in Illinois and the shooting of three Palestinian men in Vermont. Experts say the violence in the U.S. is directly linked to the violence in Gaza , where Israel has killed more than 33,000 Palestinians and wounded over 75,000 others in its campaign to eliminate Hamas, according to the enclave’s Ministry of Health.

6-year-old Wadea Al-Fayoume.

Israel has been accused of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza in the International Court of Justice, which ruled that the country should do everything it can to prevent genocidal acts in the enclave .

“It is hard to celebrate anything with all the death and the destruction happening through the genocide ,” said Abed Ayoub, the national executive director of the ADC. “So I think this month — more than any month — is not a celebration, but it’s a show of our resilience, and it’s an opportunity to show our character and the fact that we exist.”

Zaina Ujayli, a 27-year-old Ph.D. student specializing in Arab American history, observes that although the community has long grappled with discrimination and racism, there’s a growing sense of comfort among certain individuals in openly expressing it.

“For the last few months, it’s just been so in your face,” Ujayli said. “It became very real and in your face in a way that I feel like we’d almost worked against in the years before.”

A community under attack

Arab Americans trace their origins to 22 Arabic-speaking countries in the Middle East and Africa, including the occupied Palestinian territories, Sudan, Algeria and Iraq. The community is not a monolith — Arabs can belong to any racial or religious groups, and differ culturally.

Arab Americans have a long history that stretches to the  end of the 19th century , when Arabs started to immigrate to the U.S. to escape conflict and seek economic opportunities.

The long road to establishing a month to celebrate community members’ contributions to art, culture, diplomacy, technology and science started approximately 40 years ago, when advocacy groups including the ADC started pushing for one. It was first recognized at the local level by some states, but in 2021, President  Joe Biden became the first U.S. president to declare April as Arab American Heritage Month .

This year, the month comes at a somber time for many Arab Americans, who are watching their family members, friends and fellow Arabs deal with loss, trauma and a looming famine in Gaza. Many supporters of Palestinian human rights have been calling for an end to the violence for the past six months by protesting and appealing to politicians with little result.

Nader Ihmoud.

“It [Arab American Heritage Month] means nothing, especially with what’s going on,” said Palestinian American Nader Ihmoud, a writer and insurance agent. “If this administration or government here in the U.S. cared about Arab Americans at all, they have completely kept that hidden from us, because all their actions say otherwise.”

In past years, Ujayli said she would usually welcome Arab American Heritage Month by posting about it online, or helping organize events on her school’s campus. But in light of the current climate in the U.S., the month “feels a little bit cheap” this year, she said.

“If you’re not going to recognize Arab Americans’ political demands now, if you’re not going to listen to us when we’re asking you for a cease-fire, for political action — if you’re not even going to meet us with empathy, then I don’t care whether you want to celebrate our presence in this country,” she said.

Biden issued a proclamation again this year in which he acknowledged “the pain being felt by so many in the Arab American community with the war in Gaza” and mourned “the lives taken.”

He also highlighted that in the U.S., Arab Americans “remain the target of bias and discrimination — including harassment, hate crimes, racist rhetoric, and violent attacks,” adding that “hate never goes away. It only hides.”

Feeling unheard and unsafe

Still, some community members say Biden’s words are not enough, especially as his administration continues to send weapons to Israel , potentially assisting the violence in Gaza.

In February, Biden released a statement on the U.S. strikes in Iraq and Syria in response to a deadly drone attack in Jordan that killed three American service members.

“If you harm an American, we will respond,” he said in the statement.

Many Arab Americans are wondering where that energy is for members of the community who have been targeted for being Arab or supporting Palestinian human rights. A few have even been killed or imprisoned in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Ujayli said she has attended protests calling for a cease-fire in Gaza, during which some people drive by and call those gathered “terrorists.” The slur has been employed to marginalize those in the Arab American community, aiming to portray them as outsiders in American society.

“If you’re assuming that your Arab American neighbors are calling for violence every time they go out to protest on the streets, that’s an implicit bias,” Ujayli said. “I frankly think it’s the most American thing it is, to speak out against injustice, to express our freedom of opinion.”

Jasmin Abdullah, a 35-year-old Iraqi American scientist and content creator, says she speaks out against the violence in Gaza on social media and is often met with harassment. She sometimes worries she may lose her job, which she uses to support her family, as a result of the advocacy.

Jasmin Abdullah.

“They’ll attack you and say these horrible things,” Abdullah said about people who have targeted her for her beliefs on the internet. “Then they’ll go to your page and harass you, and they’ll harass people who follow you.”

The group Palestine Legal has been tracking incidents of bias and repression of people who advocate for Palestinian human rights. Since the day Hamas launched an attack in Israel on Oct. 7, the organization has received 1,680 reports of repression, around a 320% increase from the number it typically receives in a year. The incidents range from people being physically attacked for their advocacy to being verbally harassed or fired from their jobs “for doing things as simple as sharing a social media post or statement in support of Palestinians,” said Danya Zituni, communications manager for Palestine Legal.

“We’ve been both seeing and responding to incidents of repression across campuses, across workplaces — and really no industry or profession has been untouched,” Zituni said.

Zituni says statements released by officials acknowledging Arab American Heritage Month come across as disingenuous and hypocritical in light of the repression many community members have been subjected to, including the arrests of students at peaceful protests and the suspension of c a mpus a dvocacy groups .

These documented incidents have not discouraged Ihmoud from speaking up for Palestinian rights, which he does with his relatives in the West Bank at the forefront of his mind.

“They’re in such a dire state right now that we can’t let our foot off the gas,” he said. “You got to continue pushing all the way until this comes to an end, and it’s not just the war ending — it’s the occupation ending, it’s the right of return . It’s everything that has been on the table for the last 75 years.”

He hopes to one day celebrate Arab American Heritage Month the way that other racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. celebrate months dedicated to their history.

“Keep the month,” Ihmoud said. “Just don’t occupy our lands, don’t kill our people, don’t starve our children.”

'Operation True Promise': Iran launches cruise missiles on Israel alongside 'Shaheed' drones as the war in Middle East escalates

Iran launches cruise missiles on Israel alongside 'Shaheed' drones as the war in the Middle East escalates

Iran launched a significant drone attack on Israel on Saturday, which is expected to take hours to reach its targets, as reported by Israel's military and confirmed by Iranian state media quoting Iran's revolutionary guards. Iran's Revolutionary Guards have stated that Operation 'True Promise' is a response to Israeli actions and is part of their strategy to punish Israel for its perceived crimes.

According to a report by Israel's Channel 12 TV, Iran has also launched cruise missiles at Israel, with a shorter flight time than a drone.

According to two regional security sources, Jordan has positioned its air defences to intercept and destroy any Iranian drones or aircraft that breach its airspace. These sources further indicated that the army is on high alert, with radar systems actively monitoring drone movements. Jordan has also declared a state of emergency in the country.

In response to escalating tensions with Iran and the closure of Israel's airspace as a precautionary measure, El Al Airlines has announced the cancellation of 15 flights scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. The affected destinations include Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Milan, Bucharest, Sofia, Athens, Dubai, and Moscow, as stated by El Al in their announcement.

Syria is also on issued an alert and has placed its Russian-made Pantsir ground-to-air defence systems on high alert around the capital and major bases, according to army sources.

According to two security sources in Iraq, numerous drones were observed departing from Iran towards Israel via Iraqi airspace. Iranian Press TV described these actions as "extensive drone strikes" conducted by the Revolutionary Guards.

Iran's actions come in response to what it perceives as an Israeli attack on its Damascus consulate on April 1, resulting in the deaths of seven Revolutionary Guards officers, including two senior commanders. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement in the incident.

U.S. President Joe Biden, having previously cautioned Iran against attacking Israel, reiterated his commitment to stand with Israel in the face of Iranian aggression, according to statements from the White House.

Retired Israeli general Amos Yadlin disclosed that the Iranian drones were carrying approximately 20 kg (44 pounds) of explosives each, adding to concerns about the potential impact of the attack.

Israel's military has activated sirens in threatened areas and stated its readiness to respond to any potential threats. In response to the escalating situation, both Israel and neighbouring Jordan announced the closure of their airspace on Saturday night.

The ongoing Gaza conflict between Israel and Hamas, now in its seventh month, has heightened tensions in the region, with confrontations spreading to Lebanon and Syria. Additionally, there have been reports of long-range attacks on Israeli targets originating from Yemen and Iraq.

Earlier in the day, Iran's state-run IRNA news agency reported that a Guards helicopter intercepted and redirected the Portuguese-flagged MSC Aries into Iranian waters. MSC, the operator of the Aries, confirmed the incident and stated its cooperation with authorities to ensure the safety of the vessel and its 25 crew members.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz condemned Iran's actions, labeling them as piracy. This latest development adds to the already complex dynamics of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

April 12, 2024 - Israel-Hamas war

By Chris Lau, Sana Noor Haq, Adrienne Vogt , Matt Meyer and Tori B. Powell , CNN

Our live coverage of Israel's war on Hamas in Gaza has moved  here .

USAID worker killed in Israel, agency says

From CNN's Jennifer Hansler

A staff member with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) died Friday in the Israeli port city of Jaffa, the agency announced.

The male staffer was with USAID’s West Bank and Gaza mission, the agency said in a brief statement.

USAID did not provide details on the circumstances around his death or his identity or citizenship.

“He was a dedicated member of our team for more than two decades, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues,” USAID said.

USAID is working with the US Embassy to work out details about the fatal incident and its follow-up investigation, it said.

US expects Iran to carry out direct strikes against targets inside Israel, sources say

From CNN's MJ Lee and Natasha Bertrand

The United States currently expects Iran will carry out strikes against multiple targets inside Israel and that Iranian proxies could also be involved in carrying out the attacks, according to a senior administration official and a source familiar with the intelligence.

The targets would likely be both inside Israel and around the region.

The beginning of a state-on-state conflict between Iran and Israel would mark a serious escalation in the region that the US has hoped to avoid.

US sees Iran moving military assets including drones and cruise missiles, sources say

From Natasha Bertrand and Oren Liebermann

The US observed Iran moving military assets around internally, including drones and cruise missiles, signaling that it is possibly preparing to attack Israeli targets from inside its own territory, according to two people familiar with US intelligence.

It is not clear whether Iran is preparing to strike from its soil as part of an initial attack, or if it is posturing to try to deter Israel or the US from conducting a possible counter strike on its territory.

One of the people said the US had observed Iran readying as many as 100 cruise missiles.

Some context: The Iranians want their retaliatory strike on Israel — a response to the Israeli strike on an Iranian consulate last week in Damascus — to be "significant," one of the people familiar with the intelligence said. But they also want to avoid getting embroiled in a direct war with Israel and the US, CNN has reported, which is why US intelligence has assessed that Iran may use its proxy forces to launch the first attack.

Israeli settlers storm village in West Bank and kill at least 1 Palestinian. Here's what you should know

From CNN staff

A view of damaged houses and burning vehicles after a raid by Israeli settlers on a town near Ramallah, West Bank on April 12.

Hundreds of armed Israeli settlers stormed a village in the occupied West Bank on Friday, setting fire to several homes and cars — and leaving at least one Palestinian dead — in one of the largest attacks by settlers this year, according to Palestinian officials.

The settlers attacked Al-Mughayyir village, east of Ramallah, raided homes and fired gunshots at residents, according to Amin Abu-Alia, the head of the village council. Videos obtained by CNN show parts of the village burning, with smoke billowing over several buildings and settlers lobbing rocks. Houses and cars are seen completely burnt up, with sounds of gunfire and clashes heard in the background.

Here are other headlines you should know:

  • More Israeli attacks: An Israeli airstrike early Friday killed at least 29 people and injured dozens more after troops targeted a house belonging to the well-known Al-Tabatibi family in eastern Gaza City, according to a local health official. Israeli forces also surrounded and attacked the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, wounding several journalists and at least one other person. And in the occupied West Bank, troops killed two Hamas members in a raid on the city of Tubas, according to Israeli and Palestinian officials.
  • Hezbollah-Israel clashes: Around 40 rockets were fired from Lebanon on Friday evening, according to the Israeli military. Some were intercepted and the rest fell in open areas, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement. Israeli warplanes also carried out several airstrikes on Friday, targeting "military buildings" used by Hezbollah fighters in parts of southern Lebanon, the IDF said.
  • Iranian threats: US President Joe Biden told reporters Friday he expects an attack from Iran will happen “sooner than later," with the White House adding that there is a "very credible" threat of Iranian retaliatory strikes against Israel. Additionally, the US Defense Department is moving additional assets to the Middle East region, a defense official told CNN, as the US and Israel brace for the potential attack . Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and US Central Command Commander Gen. Erik Kurilla on Friday discussed preparations for the  potential attack .
  • Warnings amid Iranian threats: France , Germany, Canada and the United States are among countries that are warning their citizens not to travel to the region due to the threat of an Iranian attack against Israel.
  • Humanitarian aid: The Israeli military does not understand how humanitarian operations work, a top United Nations official said Friday, maintaining there is a "degree of mistrust" that needs to be resolved between the IDF and nongovernmental organizations on the ground in Gaza.
  • Sanctions: The European Council has  adopted sanctions  against three Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad entities , in light of "their responsibilities in the brutal and indiscriminate terrorist attacks" that occurred across Israel on October 7. The US is also sanctioning four leaders of Hamas’ cyber and drone operations based in Gaza and Lebanon, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller announced on Friday.

US will attempt to intercept launches at Israel if feasible, US officials say

From CNN's Oren Liebermann and Natasha Bertrand

The US will attempt to intercept any weapons launched at Israel if it’s feasible to do so, two US officials told CNN, in an indication of the level of ongoing cooperation between the two militaries before an anticipated Iranian attack .

US Navy forces in the Red Sea have previously intercepted long-range missiles launched from the Houthis in Yemen toward Israel. US forces in Iraq and Syria could also potentially intercept drones and rockets targeting northern Israel, depending on the location from which they’re launched.

Gen. Erik Kurilla, the commander of US Central Command, has been in Israel meeting with the country’s security leadership. On Friday, the Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, met with Kurilla.

There have been a number of conversations where US officials have urged Israel not to escalate the situation in retaliating against Iran, according to one of the US officials.

Remember: An Iranian attack is expected in response to Israel’s deadly strike of Tehran's consulate in Damascus, Syria, last week.

The Damascus attack was the latest incident to stoke fears of a wider regional conflict breaking out in the Middle East during Israel's campaign in Gaza.

Diplomatic efforts: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has held a slew of calls to foreign counterparts aimed at pressuring Iran not to attack Israel.

The top US diplomat spoke with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Friday, according to a readout from State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.

Blinken also spoke with the Turkish, Chinese and Saudi foreign ministers in recent days, Miller said.

Israeli settlers kill at least 1 Palestinian while storming West Bank village

From CNN’s Kareem Khadder and Zeena Saifi in Jerusalem and CNN’s Benjamin Brown in London

A view of damaged houses and burning vehicles after a raid by Israeli settlers on a town near Ramallah, West Bank on April 12.

Hundreds of armed Israeli settlers stormed a village in the occupied West Bank on Friday, setting fire to several homes and cars in one of the largest attacks by settlers this year, according to Palestinian officials.

At least one Palestinian man was killed when shots were fired by Israeli settlers in the village of Al-Mughayyir, east of Ramallah, according to the head of the village council Amin Abu-Alia. He said he identified the killed Palestinian as his 26-year-old relative named Jihad Abu-Alia, who was meant to get married this summer.

At least 25 others were injured in the rampage, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah, the scale of which has not been seen since hundreds of settlers stormed through the villages of  Turmusayya  and  Huwara  in two separate incidents last year.

Between 1,000 and 1,200 settlers surrounded the village, and around 500 stormed it just after midday local time on Friday, blocking all the roads in the area, Abu-Alia told CNN.

He added that Israeli security forces informed Palestinian officials that the settlers were looking for a 14-year-old Israeli boy who had gone missing earlier in the day.

They attacked the village, raided homes and fired gunshots at residents, Abu-Alia said. Videos obtained by CNN show parts of the village burning, with smoke billowing over several buildings and settlers lobbing rocks. Houses and cars are seen completely burnt up, with sounds of gunfire and clashes heard in the background.

According to Abu-Alia, the Israeli military arrived at the scene at around 3 p.m. and didn’t stop the settlers from attacking the village. Israeli soldiers allowed them to raid homes, prevented Palestinian residents from moving around and blocked ambulances from reaching the injured, he added.

Abu-Alia told CNN settlers stole approximately 70 sheep from the Palestinian village.

In response to a question by CNN, the IDF said “violent riots were instigated in multiple locations in the area” following the search for the boy.

Israel says airstrikes targeted Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon

Israeli warplanes carried out several airstrikes on Friday, targeting "military buildings" used by Hezbollah fighters in parts of southern Lebanon, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

The areas include the Aita al-Shaab and the Taybeh in southern Lebanon, said Avichay Adraee, I DF spokesperson for Arab media,  in a post on X.

"During the day, several shells were fired from Lebanon towards the Upper Galilee region, without causing any casualties. IDF forces attacked the sources of fire," Adraee added.

The Israeli airstrikes were before the 40 rockets that were launched from Lebanon toward northern Israel Friday evening and claimed by Hezbollah.

Biden expects an attack from Iran will happen "sooner than later"

From CNN's Samantha Waldenberg

US President Joe Biden gives remarks in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on the White House campus on Friday in Washington, DC.

US President Joe Biden expects an attack from Iran will happen “sooner than later," he told reporters at the White House Friday.

“I don’t want to get into secure information but my expectation is sooner than later,” Biden said when asked how imminent an attack on Israel was.

Asked what his message to Tehran is right now, the president said “Don’t.”

In response to more shouted questions from reporters asking if American troops were at risk, Biden returned to the podium and said that the United States is "devoted” to the defense of Israel.

“We will support Israel. We will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed,” Biden said.

Remember: The United States says it is on high alert for a significant Iranian retaliatory attack following Israel's deadly strike on Tehran's consulate in Damascus last week, raising fears of a wider regional war. There remains a “real,” “credible” and “viable” threat of Iran launching strikes, the White House said earlier Friday, following Israel’s attack on  a diplomatic compound in Syria that killed three Iranian generals.

Cruise ship stuck in Spain to finally leave after 69 passengers removed

A cruise ship stuck in Barcelona will be able to resume its route after a group of Bolivian passengers with visa problems were taken off the vessel on Thursday, authorities have said.

The Spanish government said in a statement it had reached an agreement with MSC Cruises in which 69 Bolivian passengers were removed from the boat and taken to a transit zone in the port, but were not granted permission to enter Spanish territory.

The ship got stranded in Barcelona this week after the Bolivian passengers were not allowed to disembark because they lacked valid documents to enter the European border-free Schengen area, an ID-check-free travel zone comprising 29 European countries that Spain is part of.

Barcelona was meant to be the final destination for the Bolivian passengers, but the boat was scheduled to travel onward to other countries.

The cruise company agreed to provide another boat from Livorno, Italy , for the Bolivian passengers later Thursday, the government statement said. It was not clear if that boat would remain in Barcelona until the situation is resolved or take the Bolivian passengers elsewhere.

Under the agreement, MSC Cruises will also provide food and health care for the impacted Bolivians and immigration officials will work to resolve the passengers' visa problems as quickly as possible, it added.

MSC Armonia, with more than 1,000 passengers reportedly on board, plans to sail to Italy on Thursday, the cruise company said.

Solange Duarte, a Bolivian diplomat in Barcelona, told The Associated Press on Wednesday she had received reports that some of the stranded Bolivians had been duped into obtaining fake visas but had no further information.

“We have asked the families to indicate who has processed this visa and we have not gotten answers,” she said.

Spain ’s national police were looking into the possibility of a fake visa scam, Duarte said.

MSC Cruises said in a statement Wednesday the Bolivian “passengers appeared to have proper documentation upon boarding in Brazil ” but Spanish authorities later said the visas were not valid for entry into the Schengen area.
