The ancient ruins of Kaunos
Iztuzu Beach
Dalyan’s fleet of shaded timber caiques , which operate from the riverbank in the centre of the town, are the key to these wonderful waterways, and offer two different experiences, whether you travel up or downstream.
Downstream, the caiques range through the channels that wind among the reed beds, allowing stops at the ancient ruins at Kaunos and the turtle beach (also known as Iztuzu Beach) at the delta’s mouth. A wide stretch of sand, with a simple café, there are loungers and parasols to hire, and the sea is shallow and safe for swimming.
Heading upstream are sulphur mud baths at several locations; boats stop to allow time for slathering the mineral-rich mud onto your skin. Koycegiz lake, the final stop, offers the chance of a dip to rinse off any remaining mud. It’s wonderfully rich in birdlife too.
Other operators offer guided kayaking trips, stopping at all the main sights and great for spotting wildlife.
Getting there & doing it
The caiques are for private hire, with (supposedly) set prices. Find the boats moored along the Dalyan waterfront, especially from mid-morning, where available captains are sure to be offering their services.
Departures and arrangements are flexible, with varying lengths of visits to beach, ruins etc. Agree a price and time with the captain beforehand; it pays to share boats with others to reduce the price.
For those only interested in Iztuzu Beach, a regular boat service shuttles between Dalyan and Iztuzu direct.
Some boats are fixed with barbecues and can include lunch in the price. However, the river banks are rich in lunch stops; a favourite is the family-run Gozde Cafe which serves gozleme (savoury pancakes) and salad on timber platforms among the orange trees. Perfection.
When to do it
Most departures are mid-morning, returning late afternoon, between May and October. Boat availability falls away between November and March when there are few visitors and the water is cold.
On some mornings turtle tours leave at or around dawn, the best time for spotting these endangered creatures.

What to expect
Wind through the wildlife-rich Dalyan wetlands on a river cruise, pamper your skin at the mud baths and relax on a secluded beach – this is the ultimate Dalyan tour. What's more, you'll pass by ancient rock-hewn tombs and enjoy a riverside lunch, too. Ceren, one of our local guides, says, ‘Turtle Beach is named after the endangered loggerhead turtles that nest here. It's actually called Iztuzu beach, and it's a great example of the local commitment to conservation. In the 1980s, new resorts were planned, but instead it has been kept in its natural state, preserving the turtles' nesting sites.'
First on the to-do list is a visit to the anti-ageing mud baths and soothing sulphur pool. Cake on the mud and let it dry in the sun before washing it off to reveal the softening effects. Local legend states that Cleopatra visited these baths to maintain her beauty. Next, it's time to savour a typical lunch at a riverside restaurant, then you'll rejoin the riverboat and glide past cliffs where you can spot ancient Lycian rock tombs dating to 400BC.
As you cruise downriver to Iztuzu beach, look out for the abundant bird life that flocks to the area. The river and unblemished, lagoon-backed sandbar beach remain as nature intended, so there's plenty of wildlife to spot. At the beach you'll have free time for swimming, sunbathing or, with a bit of luck, you might even spot a turtle or two. Round off your day with the return river cruise to Dalyan.

The history of the Dalyan River
The Dalyan River is a river in southwestern Turkey that has been an important part of the region's history for centuries. Located in the province of Muğla, the Dalyan River flows through the coastal town of Dalyan and empties into the Mediterranean Sea. The river is known for its breathtaking scenery, with its lush forests, white sand beaches, and ancient ruins. It is also home to a variety of wildlife, including loggerhead turtles and rare birds.
The Dalyan River has been an important part of Turkish culture and history since ancient times. In ancient times, the river was used as a trade route between Anatolia and the Aegean Sea. The river was also used as a source of fresh water for the people living in this region. During this time, it was also used as a place to worship gods and goddesses.
The earliest archaeological evidence from this area dates back to around 3000 BC when it was inhabited by the Leleges people who were known to build mud-brick houses along the banks of the river. The Leleges were followed by other civilizations such as the Hittites, Ionians, and Persians who all left their mark on this area. During this time, many temples were built along the banks of the river dedicated to various gods and goddesses such as Apollo, Artemis, Athena, Dionysus, Demeter, Poseidon, Hera, and Zeus.
In more recent times, during Ottoman rule in Turkey (1453-1923), Sultan Suleiman I built a bridge over the Dalyan River which connected two sides of his empire. This bridge still stands today as a reminder of his rule over this area. During this period there was also an increase in trade which saw goods being transported up and down the river on boats called gulets which are still used today by tourists visiting this region.
The Dalyan River has also been an important part of Turkish culture for centuries due to its abundance of natural resources such as fish which have been harvested from its waters for centuries by local fishermen who still rely on it today for their livelihoods. It is also home to several species of birds including flamingos which can be seen wading in its shallow waters during certain times of year.
What historical importance does Kaunos have in the Dalyan River region?
Kaunos holds significant historical importance in the Dalyan River region as an ancient city with roots dating back to the 9th century BCE. Located near the Dalyan Delta, Kaunos was an essential Carian city, showcasing a blend of Lycian, Greek, and Roman influences. The city flourished as a prominent port and trade center, gaining prominence for its strategic location along the trade routes between Lycia and Caria.
Notable archaeological remnants in Kaunos include the impressive Lycian Rock Tombs, the Acropolis, a theater, and the Temple of Apollo. These historical landmarks offer insights into the city's cultural, architectural, and religious aspects, providing a tangible connection to the rich history of the region. Exploring Kaunos allows visitors to step back in time and appreciate the legacy of a once-thriving civilization that contributed to the cultural tapestry of the Dalyan River area.
How does the Dalyan Delta contribute to the ecological balance of the area?
The Dalyan Delta plays a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance of the area, serving as a unique and biodiverse ecosystem. The delta is formed by the convergence of the Dalyan River and the Mediterranean Sea, creating a dynamic environment with a mix of freshwater and saltwater habitats. Several key contributions to the ecological balance can be highlighted:
Biodiversity: The delta provides a diverse range of habitats, including wetlands, mudflats, and marshes. These environments support a rich array of plant and animal species, including various migratory birds, fish, and marine life. The delta's biodiversity contributes to the overall health and resilience of the local ecosystem.
Nesting Grounds: The delta, with its secluded spots and abundant vegetation, serves as an essential nesting ground for various bird species. Migratory birds, in particular, find refuge in the delta during their journeys, making it a critical area for breeding and raising their young.
Fisheries: The mixing of freshwater and saltwater in the delta creates an ideal environment for fish and other aquatic species. The nutrient-rich waters support thriving fisheries, benefiting both the local ecosystem and the communities that rely on fishing for their livelihoods.
Natural Flood Control: The delta acts as a natural buffer during periods of heavy rainfall or flooding. The wetlands and marshes absorb excess water, helping to prevent downstream flooding and protecting surrounding areas from the adverse effects of extreme weather events.
Tourism and Conservation: The ecological richness of the Dalyan Delta attracts eco-tourism, promoting awareness and appreciation for the importance of preserving natural habitats. Responsible tourism practices contribute to the conservation of the delta and its delicate balance.
The Dalyan Delta's diverse ecosystems and their interconnectedness play a vital role in sustaining the ecological balance of the area, supporting both the natural environment and the human communities that coexist with it.
Explore the significance of i̇ztuzu beach as a loggerhead turtle nesting ground and its role in local conservation efforts
Iztuzu Beach, situated along the Dalyan River region, holds immense significance as a critical loggerhead turtle nesting ground and plays a pivotal role in local conservation efforts.
1. Loggerhead Turtle Nesting Ground: Iztuzu Beach has earned recognition as one of the primary nesting sites for loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) in the Mediterranean. The soft, sandy shores provide an ideal environment for female loggerheads to lay their eggs. The turtles, known for their impressive migratory patterns, return to Iztuzu Beach each year between May and October to lay their eggs in carefully excavated nests in the sand.
2. Conservation Practices: Due to the vulnerability of loggerhead turtles and their nesting sites, Iztuzu Beach has become a focal point for conservation initiatives. Local authorities, environmental organizations, and community groups work collaboratively to implement protective measures, ensuring the preservation of this critical habitat. These conservation efforts include:
Restricted Access: Certain areas of Iztuzu Beach may be cordoned off during the nesting season to minimize disturbances to the nesting turtles and their eggs.
Monitoring and Research: Conservationists engage in regular monitoring and research activities to track turtle populations, study nesting behavior, and assess the overall health of the ecosystem. This information informs conservation strategies and helps address potential threats.
Education and Awareness: Local communities and tourists are educated about the importance of protecting loggerhead turtles and their nesting grounds. Awareness campaigns aim to reduce human impact, discourage illegal activities, and foster a sense of responsibility among beachgoers.
Hatchery Programs: Some conservation initiatives involve the establishment of turtle hatcheries. Turtle eggs are relocated to protected areas where they can incubate safely until hatching. After incubation, the hatchlings are released into the sea under controlled conditions to improve their chances of survival.
3. Tourism and Conservation Synergy: The conservation efforts at Iztuzu Beach demonstrate a successful synergy between tourism and environmental preservation. Sustainable tourism practices are promoted to ensure that visitors can enjoy the beauty of the beach while minimizing their impact on the fragile ecosystem. This approach not only safeguards the natural habitat of loggerhead turtles but also fosters a sense of responsibility among those who visit this pristine location.

Dalyan Discovery Boat Tour with Turtle Beach and Lunch

Wind through the wildlife-rich Dalyan wetlands on a river cruise, pamper your skin at the mud baths and relax on a secluded beach – this is the ultimate Dalyan tour. What's more, you'll pass by ancient rock-hewn tombs and enjoy a riverside lunch, too. Ceren, one of our local guides, says, ‘Turtle Beach is named after the endangered loggerhead turtles that nest here. It's actually called Iztuzu beach, and it's a great example of the local commitment to conservation. In the 1980s, new resorts were planned, but instead it has been kept in its natural state, preserving the turtles' nesting sites.'First on the to-do list is a visit to the anti-ageing mud baths and soothing sulphur pool. Cake on the mud and let it dry in the sun before washing it off to reveal the softening effects. Local legend states that Cleopatra visited these baths to maintain her beauty. Next, it's time to savour a typical lunch at a riverside restaurant, then you'll rejoin the riverboat and glide past cliffs where you can spot ancient Lycian rock tombs dating to 400BC.As you cruise downriver to Iztuzu beach, look out for the abundant bird life that flocks to the area.
