Direction is used to determine where things are in relation to other things
Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Human Geography
Loading ...
Direction is used to determine where things are in relation to other things. Sometimes direction is vague, like when we talk about things being in that general direction . For geographic purposes, direction is more specific. It can describe position, like in the sentence Susie sits to the left of Adam. Susies direction is to the left of Adam; Adams direction is to the right of Susie. Direction can also describe movement: Susie can walk forward or backward, and she can turn left or right when walking to school. Cardinal directions are probably the most important directions in geography: north , south , east and west . These directions help us orient ourselves wherever we are. For example, in the United States, San Francisco, California, is west of New York City, New York. If we live in New York, we have to travel west to get to California. You can use a magnetic compass , which uses the Earths magnetic field , to figure out where you are or in which direction you want to go. Compasses always point north . If you dont have a compass , you can use the sun or the stars . The sun rises in the east and sets in the west . So in the morning, the sun will be in the east ; in the afternoon, it will be in the west . At night, the North Star in the Northern Hemisphere points north . The Southern Cross , which is a constellation , or group of stars , marks south in the Southern Hemisphere . The arrow is a universal symbol for direction . If someone needs to turn right at a stop sign to get to the freeway , there will usually be an arrow pointing the way.
Lost? A simple compass can be made by floating a magnetized needle on a leaf in a dish of water. You can magnetize a needle by rubbing it with silk or a magnet.

Direction of travel
Even when not used metaphorically , “direction of travel” is an ugly expression, meaning nothing more than “direction”, but not quite as much as “destination”, since, no matter how clear a firm’s vector at a particular time, being captive of the navigation-by- ouija board that all modern multinationals are, it is prone to be moving towards a different blind horizon at any time, at the impetus of some newly-hired COO anxious to make his mark an a change-fatigued department or more likely a steerco or opco of her convening — in which case there may well be two or three different directions of travel at once.

Hit and run tourism: what does it mean to ‘visit’ a country.

Mount Everest, Nepal which is suffering from overtourism—400 people have been to every ... [+] country/territory in the world
Hit and run tourism is everywhere on the news, with people bemoaning the bad behaviour of tourists converging on one picture or sculpture before rushing onto the next, or taking selfies in inappropriate locations and then moving on, leaving behind mounds of litter and noise. What's clear is that there are ways that tourists can be motivated to change their behavior and some traveler groups are trying to create consensus around what it actually means to visit a country.
More People Are Visiting Every Country In The World
There's a small group of people who have visited every country in the world—about 400 or so, as reported by CNN . In 2023, though, 50 people joined this group, more than ever before, and they can all say they have been to all 195 UN-recognized countries and territories.
There are more organizations welcoming these travelers too. The Travelers Century Club was the first to launch in 1954—its members need to have visited 100 or more countries and territories. Now there are also two others, Nomad Mania and Most Traveled People.
Most people in these clubs don't suddenly decide to travel to every country in the world. Many, such as Rauli Virtanen who is believed to be the first person to have traveled to every country in the world, are already incredibly well traveled before they decide to make it a mission.
Many, as Virtanen acknowledges, can only travel the world because they are fortunate to have the right passports coupled with enough wealth (or jobs that pay for travel expenses).
Travel, however, has always been a competitive sport—whether that be Ernest Shackleton getting to the Antarctic, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay climbing Mount Everest or Amelia Earhart crossing the Atlantic. Today's equivalent is probably to visit every country. Ugandan-American travel influencer Jessica Nabongo became the first Black woman to document her travels to every country in 2019 and Gunnar Garfors is the first person to visit every country in the world twice.
Amazon Prime Video s Best New Show Arrives With A Perfect 100 Critic Score
Apple s iphone 16 pro design revealed in new leak, charlotte shooting 4 officers killed while serving warrant, more and more people are complaining of 'hit and run' tourism.
Now that visitor numbers are springing back to pre-pandemic levels, some of the old travel nuisances have also returned. Gion district in Kyoto, Japan, is reporting that tourists are causing a nuisance when trying to take photographs of the women Geishas and that while on-the-spot fines exist, they are unenforceable.
Milan's mayor wants to ban gelato and alcohol sales after midnight to preserve the city's tranquility and Japanese authorities are to build a big wall blocking the view of Mount Fuji from a gas station because of badly-behaved tourists stopping for a selfie and leaving litter everywhere.
The same kind of tourism is happening because of Netflix's Emily in Paris. The show portrays a side of Paris that critics say is stereotypical, and simply untrue (could 'Emily' afford the apartment she has on her salary?) but more insidiously for critics, it has encouraged a form of Parisian tourism that is only interested in a form of collection, identical to the character. The photo eating the same pain au chocolat in the same boulangerie. Tick. The photo drinking the same chocolat chaud in the same 18th century tearoom. Check. For some travelers, the only way to live an experience is by taking a picture and then posting it.
So, What Does It Really Mean To Travel To A Country?
So maybe the real question is, what does it mean to 'visit' a country? Is it spending time there, even if we never speak a word of the language? Never speak to a local? Nomad Mania members suggest that 'a visit' should normally constitute things such as passing through immigration, staying a night, and traveling in a moving vehicle.
The Director of the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence, best known for housing Michelangelo’s David, notes that there are also different ways that people can be encouraged to pass through some of the world's most famous—and most Instagrammable—locations. Writing in The Guardian , Cecilie Hollberg suggests several things that have worked to reduce such 'hit and run' tourism in her museum—holding exhibitions in winter, extending opening hours, getting the local residents involved, changing signage and museum trajectories so that visitors don't all head straight for selfies with David, as well as reducing the numbers in tour groups.
In the age of the climate crisis, it might also depend on how we travel. Torbjørn “Thor” Pedersen set off from Denmark in 2013 to visit every country without flying and he finally arrived in his final country, the Maldives, in May 2023 after 9 years and 203 countries/territories and returned to Denmark by ship. Some travel challenges it seems can be slow burn and meet current Instagram trends.

Recall an email message that you sent in Outlook
Message recall is available after you select Send and is available only if both you and the recipient have a Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Exchange email account in the same organization . Messages sent to or from a Hotmail, Gmail, or live.com account can't be recalled.
Note: This feature isn't available in Outlook for Mac. See Can I recall a sent email in Outlook for Mac?
Note: If the steps under this New Outlook tab don't work, you may not be using new Outlook for Windows yet. Select the Classic Outlook tab and follow those steps instead.
Select Sent Items in the left folder pane, then double-click the sent message to open it in a separate window.
Shortly thereafter, you'll receive a Message Recall Report in your inbox. Select the link in that message to see whether your recall has succeeded, is pending, or failed.
With message recall, a message that you sent is retrieved from the mailboxes of the recipients who haven’t yet opened it. You can also substitute a replacement message. For example, if you forgot to include an attachment, you can try to retract the message, and then send a replacement message that has the attachment.
To recall and replace a message
In the folder pane on the left of the Outlook window, choose the Sent Items folder.
Open the message that you want to recall. You must double-click to open the message. Selecting the message so it appears in the reading pane won't allow you to recall the message.
If you have the Classic Ribbon, from the Message tab, select Actions > Recall This Message .
If you don’t see the Recall This Message command, you probably don’t have an Exchange account or the feature isn’t available within your organization.
You can't recall a message that's protected by Azure Information Protection.
You can't recall a message in Outlook on the web.
Select Delete unread copies of this message or Delete unread copies and replace with a new message , and then select OK .
If you’re sending a replacement message, compose the message, and then select Send .
To check on the recall
After submitting a recall request, usually less than 30 seconds later, you will get an email notification with the subject "Message Recall Report for message [original message subject]".
Select the View Message Recall Report link to view the report in your browser. If you’re prompted, log in with your mailbox credentials to view the report.
Recall actions are usually quick, regardless of how many recipients are involved. But if the recall request can’t be executed right away for some reason (e.g., the recipient’s mailbox is temporarily unavailable) we'll continue to retry for up to 24 hours before marking the recall as failed.
Status updates are usually pretty quick as well but can sometimes take up to five minutes for a message with up to a few hundred recipients. For a large number of recipients (tens of thousands) the recall itself is still fast, but it can take up to thirty minutes to retrieve the recall status for all recipients.
Note: The steps below are for Outlook.com which is the browser-based version of Outlook and is for personal Microsoft accounts such as Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, MSN.com, etc. If you're using Outlook in a web browser and have a work or school account, see the Outlook.com tab.
Recall a message in Outlook on the web
Note: The steps below are for Outlook.com which is the browser-based version of Outlook for personal accounts such as Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, MSN.com, etc. If you're using Outlook in a browser with a work or school account, see the Outlook on the web tab.
Can I recall a message in Outlook.com?
Let's say you've just sent an email message to someone by mistake in Outlook.com. How do you recall it?
Unfortunately, you can't.
Message recall is not available for users with email addresses ending in @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, or @msn.com. These are web-based email services where once you send an email message, it's gone from your email server and out of your control.
Set up undo send in Outlook.com
Although you can't recall a message once it's been sent, when you turn on the undo send option, Outlook.com delays sending the message so you can cancel it if you change your mind.
You can delay sending your message for 5 or 10 seconds. To turn on the undo send option:
Under Undo send , choose the how long Outlook.com will wait to send your messages.
Select Save .
Undo sending in Outlook.com
Once undo send is set up, you'll see an Undo send prompt at the bottom of the message list whenever you send a new message. The prompt will be available for the length of time you set in Compose and reply.
