13 Best Places to Visit for Halloween Around the World

From Mexico to Romania, here are 13 of the best places to visit for Halloween.

halloween travel destinations

The spooky season is almost here, and there's no better way to honor it than with a trip to a place primed and ready to celebrate ghosts and goblins.

Now's the time to lean into sweater season, the changing leaves, and all things pumpkin — both flavored and decor related. And don't worry — just because it's Halloween doesn't mean you always need to be in for a fright. Here are 13 spooky and fun places to visit for Halloween around the globe.

Salem, Massachusetts

It's almost impossible to separate Salem from Halloween. The coastal Massachusetts community was the site of the Salem Witch Trials, beginning in 1692, which led to the hanging of 19 men and women. It's a place where the air is thick with spirits, but around Halloween, it's a destination filled with merriment too. Each October, the town puts on Salem Haunted Happenings, which includes a parade, film nights, a costume ball, and more, and you're all invited to join .

London, England

London has all the historical trappings needed for an epic Halloween season. It's a place brimming with ghost stories, and the best spot to experience this to the fullest is the Tower of London . It was here that several notable figures were put to death, including Anne Boleyn, the former Queen of England and second wife of Henry VIII, who is said to still roam the halls. Visitors can tour the Tower of London any time of year, but it's just got that extra spooky feeling in October. Visit for a Twilight Tour for an eerie vibe.

Boyne Valley, Ireland

What better place to celebrate Halloween than in the place where it began? As History.com explains, the Halloween tradition began with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain . At the time of its origin, people would wear costumes to ward off ghosts, which means not much has changed (though we're sure they didn't have allegiances to different candy at the time). Now Ireland celebrates with festivals throughout the month of October, including the Púca Halloween Festival , which honors the Celtic new year with music, art, and plenty of sweet treats.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festivities are serious business in Oaxaca. Though it's a festival for the dead, it's by no means a horror show. As Travel + Leisure previously explained, the event is in honor of those who've passed from this world to the next and is a way to keep their spirit alive today. The celebration takes place over two days, with families decorating the graves of their deceased loved ones and crafting ornate altars at home to further honor them. Travelers can join the revelry in the form of parades and parties throughout the town of San Miguel de Allende, which keeps the festivities going through November 2.

Transylvania, Romania

As the home of Count Dracula, Transylvania has a lot to live up to during the Halloween season, but it more than delivers on its spooky offerings. Travelers to Transylvania can visit Bran Castle , the home of the mythical count, which is open every day for tours. The castle even hosts a yearly Halloween bash that includes a nighttime tour, a party, and an open bar.

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is a town known for its revelry. Yes, its Mardi Gras celebrations are second to none, but its Halloween parties aren't too shabby either. In October, the city busts out its decorations and its best costumes for parades and parties galore. Don't miss the ghost tours in the French Quarter if you're looking to send a few shivers down your spine before joining the festivities.

Paris, France

Looking for a Halloween event that's très chic? Head to Paris. The City of Lights may not be the place where you'll find the typical trick-or-treat crowd, but what you will find is La Toussaint , or All Saints' Day, a day to remember friends and family who have passed, which is both a national and Catholic holiday. Like Day of the Dead in Mexico, families take this day to honor their loved ones by visiting their graves and placing flowers on top. There are more light-hearted events throughout the city, including parties at Disneyland Paris and Le Manoir de Paris, arguably the biggest and coolest haunted house in Europe.

Scotland, like Ireland, has strong ties to Halloween's past. As Visit Scotland explained, the name Halloween comes from the Scottish shortening of "All Hallows' Eve." While you can certainly attend any number of events to honor the day, for a longer journey, try exploring the nation's Ghost Trail, a map of 15 locations around the nation that are said to be some of the most haunted spots on the planet. End the tour at the Samhuinn Fire Festival in Edinburgh for a delightful conclusion.

Venice and Borgo a Mozzano, Italy

Italy isn't exactly a Halloween-crazed nation, but one place you'll find plenty of ghoulish fun is in Venice. It too is a destination well-known among the ghost hunting circuit, especially on the island Poveglia. The island once acted as a quarantine zone for people suffering from the plague and was even used as an insane asylum in the early 20th century, making it an absolute hub for paranormal activity. As for the parties, you'll have to head to the town of Borgo a Mozzano, which sits just north of Lucca. There, you'll find a massive annual Halloween bash on the appropriately named Devil's Bridge .

Hong Kong loves a good party, and Halloween is no exception. Like other destinations on this list, it's not really a place where you'll find trick-or-treaters on the street, but you will find festive events nonetheless, especially in places like Hong Kong Disneyland , which goes toe-to-toe with its global counterparts for the season. Hong Kong's other theme park, Ocean Park , also throws an annual bash that's not to be missed, and you'll typically find a plethora of happenings in Lan Kwai Fong, the city's famed party district, that are all worthy of a visit (though things have been uncharacteristically quiet here due to the pandemic, it appears that may be changing .)

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah, Georgia is the place to go in the U.S. if you want to be almost guaranteed a ghost sighting. The southern city is brimming with ghost stories thanks to haunted hotels, buildings, bars, and more, which can all be experienced through its plentiful ghost tours. Because of its connection to the spirits, Savannah is a stellar place to go for epic trick-or-treating for kids and parties for adults. See all of the city's event listings here to stay up-to-date on yearly happenings.

Prague, Czech Republic

Halloween is quickly becoming a more popular holiday in Prague thanks to the growing expat community. Though you'll only find a very sparse trick-or-treating scene, it's a place filled with gothic architecture that feels both utterly romantic and absolutely spooky all at once. The city is even home to a torture museum , which is absolutely more terrfying to visit than any fake haunted house in your home town.

Brussels, Belgium

Brussels may not have a long history with Halloween, but it sure has dedicated itself to becoming a Halloween hotspot in recent years. The city hosts parades in Saint-Gilles , and several bars and restaurants host their own gatherings. None, however, are as spooky as Le Cercueil , which translates to "coffins" in French. The bar is spooky all year long and those visiting can toast over a table made from a coffin, one of which comes with clear plexiglass so you can see the skeleton inside.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

Sunday, October 31. Halloween is not an official bank holiday, so there is traditionally no associated time off from work and school. Some businesses may close early to allow employees a chance to enjoy themselves; however, this is the exception and not the rule. Some cities, towns, or individual neighborhoods elect to organize Halloween-related events on the Friday and Saturday before the actual holiday specifically so as not to interview with work and school schedules.

Spooky Getaways for Halloween

If you're thinking about traveling this year for Halloween, here are some destinations known for their spooky celebrations.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

The legacy of Salem, Massachusetts is inextricably bound up with the events that occurred in 1692, and that later became known as the Salem Witch Trials. The episode of puritanical mass hysteria resulted in hundreds of accusations, 30 convictions, and at least 19 directly related executions. Today, the town commemorates this dark chapter with several memories and museums dedicated to shining a light on exactly what occurred and why. Given their association with Halloween, Salem’s connection to witches and witchcraft make it a perennially popular destination. Make sure to visit the Witch House, the Witch Dungeon Museum, the Salem Witch Museum, and the Salem Witch Village. There’s normally plenty of Halloween-related activities and promotions on offer in Salem. This is one place you won’t be lacking for things to enjoy.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

Sleepy Hollow is where Ichabod Crane, the protagonist in Washington Irving's classic The Legend of Sleepy Hollow , encounters the fabled Headless Horseman. The real Sleepy Hollow is a charming little town set along the Hudson River roughly an hour's drive north from Lower Manhattan. Explore the town to visit the Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse, Philipsburg Manor, and the gorgeous Sleepy Hollow itself. The densely wooded area is filled with many paths and open fields. Wander through Sleepy Hollow cemetery where you will find Washington Irving’s grave along with that of Andrew Carnegie and William Rockefeller. Flee towards town as darkness draws nigh and make sure you’re across the Headless Horseman Bridge with plenty of time to spare. This is a frighteningly good Halloween destination.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

Savannah bills itself as "America’s most haunted city." Its antebellum architecture features plenty of locations you would not be at all surprised to see in a horror film. Art lovers will thoroughly enjoy the broad range of artistic styles and tastes on display in Savannah. Visit the Mercer Williams House Museum to see the mansion vividly portrayed in John Berendt's bestseller Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil . Afterwards, work your way towards the river and the Savannah City Market. Often described as Savannah's "art and soul," the galleries here are a must-see. Finally, allow yourself some time to explore this most Southern of towns and draw in its wonderful artistic sensibilities. Spend some time walking the cobblestones on River Street and pay a visit to the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist. The 19th-century Roman Catholic Church is a great example of neo-gothic design, especially the lovely stained glass windows.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

Best known for Colonial Williamsburg, the living-history museum dedicated to preserving the life and times of America’s Revolutionary era, Williamsburg is no slouch when it comes to Halloween. Colonial Williamsburg dresses itself up and offers a range of fun activities including a ghost story tour. Accompany your guide through the historic village and learn about local witch trials. Other tours take guests around to various properties rumored to be haunted at one time or another. The city’s lovely colonial era architecture makes for a fun adventure any time of year. Make sure you visit prominent locations like the Governor’s Palace, a pre-Revolutionary mansion that was home to British royals. Depending on your travel plans, you can elect to stay in Williamsburg proper or make the short drive up from Hampton or Norfolk.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

The "Big Easy" is no stranger to a great Halloween party. New Orleans is home to many a shop and museum featuring zombies, spooks, and voodoo dolls. Though fun for Halloween, voodoo has a long and storied history among Afro-Caribbean peoples extending far beyond the notions of possession and spirits. Do yourself a favor and link up with a tour that will help you explore the true meaning of voodoo culture. Another popular Halloween activity is to visit the city’s famous cemeteries. Given its location and high groundwater table, New Orleans has long had to bury its dead aboveground. The city’s famous final resting places are popular on Halloween and include the historic Greenwood Cemetery. Spend some time wandering around the elaborate sarcophagi, but be on the lookout in case the Bone Man comes calling. Finish out the night in the famed French Quarter.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

During Halloween, Greenfield Village, the Dearborn’s sprawling open-air history museum, breaks out the jack-o’-lanterns. Over a 1,000 often-intricately decorated pumpkins bring joy and amazement to young and old alike. Greenfield Village is a great place to visit and the neighboring Henry Ford Museum is filled with interactive exhibits that include many cars and a collection of classic steam locomotives. The museum occupies a site on what was once Ford’s iconic River Rouge Complex. The sprawling museum and attractions at Greenfield Village will give you plenty to explore. Be on the lookout for the Headless Horseman and don’t forget to grab yourself some delicious apple cider and doughnuts. On crisp fall days in Lower Michigan, hot apple cider is a real treat! If you have some extra time to budget, wander over to neighboring Detroit.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

"Here’s Johnny!" Anyone old enough to remember Jack Nicholson’s bone-chilling performance in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining can readily attest to the film’s cultural impact. The film was an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel of the same name. King found inspiration for the novel’s location in the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. Offering spectacular panoramic views of Lake Estes and the nearby Rocky Mountain peaks, the Stanley Hotel is an absolute classic. There's also a musume of classic cars. Estes Park itself serves at the gateway into nearby Rocky Mountain National Park. A UNESCO-designated World Biosphere Reserve, Rocky Mountain National Park contains a multitude of species, scenic hiking trails, river recreation, phenomenal camping, and more. Particularly now when safe and affordable vacation destinations are scarce, you’ll find the wide-open spaces a welcome relief from months of pent-up coronavirus-induced frustrations. Treat yourself with a stay at the Stanley Hotel and you’ll have a Halloween to remember.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

Vegas can be a downright scary place year round, but Halloween is something else altogether. Ditch the glitz and glamour found along the Strip and head down to the Fremont Street Experience. Freemont turns into a veritable vampire's ball. Celebrate Halloween Vegas-style with live music entertainment, costume contests, and the chance to win to some serious cash. Freemont is an innovative re-imagination of classic Downtown Las Vegas. Before there was the Strip, this is where the action was. Once known as Glitter Gulch, classic casinos like the Golden Nugget and the Horseshoe were located here. Following extensive redevelopment, Fremont Street is now a popular performance venue. Under a barrel vault canopy, visitors can take a ride on the zip line or hunt for souvenirs. You’ll find plenty to see and do along Freemont Street during Halloween. Come on down and work up a grove as you dance the Monster Mash late into the night.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

Besides trick or treating, here are several ways to have some wholesome fun this Halloween.

  • Plan a visit to your local pumpkin patch, orchard, or corn maize. Many of these locations love to do Halloween-themed events. Find out ahead of time whether the corn maize is built with one-way paths. This will help you avoid coming into overly close contact with other people. Be cautious when handling fruits at the orchard or pumpkins at the pumpkin patch. It’s normal for lots of people to want to touch things so keep a bottle of hand sanitizer at the ready and use it frequently.
  • Invite your neighbors to take part in a local costume parade or contest. Make sure to hold it outside so people can maintain a suitable distance.
  • Have a pumpkin-carving contest at your local park. These fun events don’t require confined spaces and would be appropriate to do provided you adopt some minimal safeguards.

There are plenty of ways to have a safe and spooky Halloween. Make sure you do a bit of planning ahead of time, especially if you want to travel to one of our featured destinations.

Halloween, Día de Muertos and more spooky festivals around the world

halloween travel destinations

From Day of the Dead celebrations across Mexico to parades in the streets of Dublin, here are the best Halloween destinations around the world © Ursula_A_Castillo_Gomez / Shutterstock

From Samhain and All Souls’ Day to Día de Muertos and good old All Hallow’s Eve (Halloween), the northern hemisphere’s autumnal shift into the long, dark days of winter produces creepy and colorful celebrations around the globe.

These annual holidays number among the world’s oldest – and perhaps most misunderstood.

Historically, many cultures – from Aztec to Celtic – have recognized the last day of October and the first two days of November as a time when the dead were thought to return to earth and walk among the living. Afraid of ghosts? That’s what costumes, thought to ward off evil spirits, are for.

So before you write off Halloween as nothing but tricks and treats for the kiddie set, why not head to a city that takes its traditions – not to mention its fun – seriously? From costumed debauchery in New Orleans to the flamboyant fun of Hong Kong’s hippest party district, these are five of the best Halloween travel destinations around the world.

A giant monstrous effigy is paraded through the streets of Dublin as part of the Bram Stoker Festival. Around it, a large crowd watches on.

Unleash your pagan side at Samhain, Dublin, Ireland

Originating in Druid and Celtic rituals, Samhain literally means “summer’s end.” Drawing upon its rich Celtic history (and claim to fame as the birthplace of none other than Dracula author Bram Stoker),  Dublin offers a mysteriously romantic twist on the holiday.

Annual events include a carnival-style parade along with traditional bonfires around town. Care to mix your horror with a bit of history? Brave a haunted Dublin tour or join gothic horror enthusiasts at the Bram Stoker Festival , complete with séances, theatrical performances and more.

For a truly otherworldly celebration with a decidedly ancient flair, don’t miss the superstition-rich festivities at the National Leprechaun Museum . Along with Celtic-inspired stories and games, expect to be haunted by costumed characters straight out of Irish mythology.

Two women sit beside a pair of candle-lit graves at night in Oaxaca, Mexico. In the background other people eye other decorated tombstones.

Party with the dearly departed on Día de Muertos, Oaxaca, Mexico

Something about the phrase Día de Muertos – that’s “Day of the Dead” in Spanish – simply rolls off the tongue with the kind of mysterious energy that this Mexican cultural capital exudes. Held on the Catholic holidays of All Saints’ Day (November 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2), this Aztec-influenced festival commemorates the memory of deceased family, friends and ancestors.

The festival is held in numerous cities in Mexico , but is arguably at its most spectacular in Oaxaca . Here, the streets overflow with parades, colorful markets and costumed revelers sporting wildly macabre masks, while in nearby graveyards families spare no effort in their quest to create the most extravagantly decorated tombstones, replete with elaborate flowers and the eerie glow of countless candles. Don’t skip a trip to a panaderia (bakery), where a mind-blowing array of morbid sweet treats will be on display. Try a sugar-spun coffin, or the eggy, yeasty pan de muerto (bread of the dead).

Tourists wave to Mickey Mouse, who stands proudly atop a giant pumpkin as part of the Hong Kong Disneyland Halloween Parade.

Join the fun at a theme-park party, Hong Kong

Mix plenty of international expats with a dash of local traditions, and you’ve got one of Asia’s most festive Halloween celebrations. The  Lan Kwai Fong district is the epicenter of the party-all-night action. The restaurants and bars here are known to take their Halloween decor seriously, which makes this also the perfect spot to kick off the night with atmospheric dinner and drinks.

For all-out Halloween fun, you can’t do better than a stop at  Hong Kong ’s theme parks. Ocean Park goes hardest on the spooky attractions, with immersive haunted experiences and scary street shows (book tickets in advance). Got kids in tow? Head to Hong Kong Disneyland , where such famous Disney villains as Maleficent, Jafar, Cruella and Captain Hook preside over the park for the night. Expect plenty of special-effects delights, from a ghostly roller coaster to show-stopping pyrotechnics designed to impress even jaded adults.

Skeletons on a balcony in the French Quarter, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA

Vampires and voodoo in the French Quarter, New Orleans, USA

Take the decadence and debauchery of Mardi Gras. Now add a witch costume, an eerie soundtrack and a dash of voodoo magic – and you’ve got yourself a N’awlins-style Halloween. With an intoxicating dark side that’s celebrated all year round, the Big Easy cranks up the fright factor in inimitable style come late October. (What’s more, the weather is perfect for parading around in a daring costume.) Expect this behemoth of a shindig to last several days, with parades and parties in the streets building to a climax on October 31.

For a deliciously sinful vibe, start on notorious Bourbon Street and strut your stuff through the heart of the Vieux Carré (French Quarter) , where an exotic spectacle of Halloween fashion will be on show. From the elegant balconies, revelers toss down “treats” (Mardi Gras beads) to the crowds in exchange for “tricks” (usually a smile and a wave...though expect to see plenty more).

Feeling adventurous? Head to historic Jackson Square to seek your fortune with a mystic, brave a moonlit cemetery tour or dress your wicked best at the city’s sexiest party, the Endless Night Vampire Ball (where a strict costumed dress code applies).

Medusa and Under Sea Creatures joining the Halloween Parade

Get your spooky groove on with the Village people, New York City, USA

Since 1973, this epic parade – rumored to be the largest Halloween celebration on Earth, with an estimated two million attendees – has remained an iconic New York moment. Show up early and stake out a prime spot on Sixth Ave in the West Village , where the whole city seems to converge in a true melting-pot experience.

From the people-watching (picture a provocative array of costumes designed to thrill, shock and defy explanation) to phantasmagoric floats, giant puppets, live bands and circus performers, this alcohol-free event is an only–in–New York madcap delight.

Want to join in the fun? This year’s theme  is “Upside Down / Inside Out.” Arrive at 6pm to line up for the parade, but take note: a creative costume is a must. There are prizes for the best dressed – and plenty of inspiration from previous years on  Instagram . If you can’t get a costume together but want to take part, you can consider  volunteering for such spots as puppet animators.

Where does Halloween come from?

Halloween originates from the ancient Celtic celebration, Samhain, and was celebrated in Britain and Ireland. The festival celebrates the end of the harvest and the coming of shorter days. It is one of four Gaelic season festivals. The Celts would gather around ancient passage tombs, which were considered by some to be portals to the Otherworld. During this time, it was thought that the barrier between worlds was thinned, and spirits were able to cross between realms.

The festivals included bonfires, dancing, costumes, sacrifices, and feasting. Most of our Halloween customs have evolved out of these ritual festivities. Costume parties and trick-or-treating antics were primary a British and American thing for a long time, but now the festivities have spread to countries all around the world.

The Best 15 Places to Travel for Halloween

Now, the city celebrates witches year-round, but it’s over during the “Haunted Happenings” celebration in the month of October. The little city comes alive with fireworks, parades, costume contests, and execution reenactments.

Visitors can explore the Salem Witch Museum, housed in the former home of Judge Jonathon Corwin, one of the judges responsible for the guilty verdicts. On Halloween night, magic shows, séances, and even a witch’s ball keep the celebrations going late into the night!

2. Transylvania, Romania

Transylvania is a mystical land of fairytale castles set in the misty mountains. It is the home of Vlad the Impaler, the Wallachian ruler on which Dracula was partially based. Bran Castle is known as Dracula’s Castle. It was not and has nothing to do with him, but the castle does have a pretty amazing setting that lends itself to creepiness. The castle is vampire-mania year-round, but it certainly elevates during the Halloween season. The castle offers guided Halloween tours, laced with Transylvanian lure. You can visit the childhood home of Vlad the Impaler, complete with a torture museum, in nearby Sighisoara.

While in the area, you should also visit Cluj-Napoca. Not only is it another hauntingly beautiful Transylvanian mountain town, but it is also home to the Hoai-Baciu Forest, one of the spookiest places on the planet. The forest is a mass of twisted, gnarly trees, that are always shrouded in mist. The forest is known as the “Bermuda Triangle of Romania,” as there are countless local tales of persons disappearing into the forest under mysterious circumstances, as well as a large number of UFO sightings. One look at this forest, and you will understand why it is so steeped in legend. It is seriously a creepy place.

3. New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is primarily known for Mardi Gras, but it is also the most haunted city in the United States. With the heavy influx of early Black African religions from the Caribbean, New Orleans has always been one of the hubs for voodoo practitioners in the United States. The streets of the French Quarter are lined with voodoo shops to peruse if you are so inclined.

Visit the LaLaurie Mansion, home of the infamously cruel serial killer Madame Delphine LaLaurie. Dawn your best costume and join the Halloween street party on Frenchman Street. Tour some of the scariest haunted houses in the world. Watch the Krewe of Boo Parade, take a guided tour of The Gardette-LaPrete Mansion, home to the largest mass slaying in New Orleans history, tour the hauntingly beautiful, world-famous cemeteries, and of course learn all about this city of ghosts and goblins on our app-lead New Orleans ghost tour!

4. London, England

The dark, gloomy cobblestone streets of London provide the perfect ambiance for ghost stories and haunted tours. Jack the Ripper found the streets of White Hall an ideal hunting ground to complete his dirty deeds, and the Tower of London was known for its brutal torture tactics and numerous executions. The city celebrates Halloween big, and there is an abundance of ghost tours and Halloween events in the city.

Visit the London Dungeon, which recreates a series of the city’s most macabre stories, including that of Jack the Ripper and Sweeney Todd. Take a tour of the Tower of London. Book a nighttime Jack the Ripper walking tour to revisit the infamous murder sites. Visit the site of William Wallace’s execution, or take the train out to Hampton Court Palace, which is reportedly haunted by two of Henry VIII’s wives. Descend below the bridge for the haunted London Bridge Experience and London Tombs, where you will find your way through an underground maze filled with famous, nefarious characters. Top off your week with a showing of the gothic romance, Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre. There is so much to do in London for Halloween that your only issue will be narrowing down the options.

5. Edinburgh, Scotland

Another city steeped in fog and shadowed by rain clouds, is the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. Edinburgh is the city where the Harry Potter series was written, and many of the key locations in the stories are based on Edinburgh icons. Harry Potter walking tours are popular here, as well as too many walking ghost tours to count.

Take a guided tour of Real Mary King’s Close and the seedy underworld vaults of Edinburgh. If you prefer your antics a bit more lighthearted, then hop on the Comedy Horror Ghost Bus Tour. The Edinburgh Dungeon is very similar to London’s with scary rides and local ghost stories.

The Samhuinn Fire Parade is a special event thrown in Old Town, on Halloween night. It consists of a dramatic battle between the Kings of Summer and Winter. The winner is decided by Cailleach, a Celtic goddess. The festival is meant to usher in winter and includes wild performances, music, dance, and lots of fabulous costumes.

6. Oaxaca, Mexico

Oaxaca is a stunning city in Southwest Mexico, and it’s famous for stunning cathedrals and fabulous cuisine. The day after traditional Halloween, the city is transformed for Day of the Dead celebrations. Dia de Los Muertos is a time to celebrate and honor dead loved ones. The celebrations overflow into the streets with lavish parades, full of fanciful dancers with intricately painted faces. The party concludes in the main square and continues all night long!

7. Chicago, Illinois

Chicago has a long history of violence from the hay day of the mob to modern-day gang rivalries. Old school gangsters filled the waterways with the bodies of their victims, and paranormal believers tell stories of screams echoing out from the Clark Street Bridge. Clark street is where the infamous Valentine’s Day Massacre took place, and it is said to be the home of several apparitions. You can hang out on Archer Avenue and offer a ride to the “vanishing hitchhiker.” John Dillinger’s ghost haunts the alley next to his death site at Victory Gardens Biograph Theater. Even Lincoln Park used to be a cemetery and is reported to have frequent paranormal activity.

8. Eureka Springs, Arkansas

Eureka Springs is a small town in the Ozark Mountains that happens to be home to “America’s most haunted hotel,” the 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa . In its long history, the gorgeous, old, mountaintop hotel has served as both a girls’ college and a hospital… both fodder for paranormal activity! The hotel staff does a daily ghost tour, and they even host an annual paranormal event for researchers from all over the world called the Eureka Springs Paranormal Weekend. Most of the ghosts are friendly and tend to stay in their room or area. The hotel is still a working getaway for romantic weekends, but don’t be surprised if your lover’s weekend turns out to be a threesome.

Eureka Springs is a fun town with lots of quirky shops selling folk art and tasty treats. The food is fantastic. The traditional architecture is quite charming, and you can visit the huge Christ of the Ozarks statue and the gorgeous Thorncrown Chapel, a fairytale glass chapel in the woods. Catch a magic show, or join one of the guided walking ghost tours or underground city tours!

9. Savannah, Georgia

The beautiful Antebellum mansions and dripping Spanish moss are generally seen as charming, but on a foggy autumn evening, they can certainly lean towards spooky! The Old Southern City has a rich (if deplorable, in parts) history, and ghost stories abound about former slaves and Confederate soldiers.

Book a room in one of the haunted hotels, and learn the legends of the area on Let’s Roam’s Savannah ghost tour , where you’ll visit Madison Square, The Pirate’s House, and The Marshal House. Finish off your evening in costume and experience excellent Halloween drink deals on a Congress Street bar crawl.

10. San Francisco, California

Not only is San Francisco an old gold rush town, most of which are creepy, but it is home to one of the eeriest places in America, Alcatraz Prison. A tour of “The Rock” is spooky any time, but a haunted night tour, in the foggy bay, adds a whole nother level of chill. The city, along with its neighbor Los Angeles, is one of the most popular places featured in scary movies.

The 1889 Queen Anne Hotel is gorgeous but notoriously haunted. Mary, apparently a former maid, is often seen going about her duties, but hey, she has a habit of unpacking guests’ bags for them, which is nice. In a city with so many haunted jaunts, it’s hard to know where to. We got you covered! Just download our scavenger hunt app, and explore the best of “The Gold City’s” paranormal past on our “San Francisco Ghost Rush” scavenger hunt !

Bell-ringing nuns, arguing priests and prostitutes, and a monk’s mistress roam Old Town in Prague, and they aren’t the only ones. Prague has at least 100 known specters and is considered one of the most haunted cities in the world.

Ghost aside, Prague has a plethora of creepy spots. You can take a Medieval dungeon tour, explore the infamously haunted Prague Castle where multiple specters reside, cross over Charles Bridge and look for the 12 headless men, and visit the incredibly creepy Bohnice Psychiatric Hospital and cemetery. In fact, Prague has several spooky old cemeteries.

Top it all off with a stop by Sedlec Ossuary. It’s a Roman Catholic chapel that was built over an ancient cemetery. The bodies were moved into the church and assembled into coats of armor, wall decorations, and a horrific, huge chandelier. The church is thought to house skeletons of between 40 and 70,000 people. Talk about spine-chilling!

12. Sleepy Hollow, New York

It just sounds creepy, doesn’t it? Sleepy Hollow is, of course, the stomping ground of Washington Irving’s Headless Horseman, Ichabod Crane. Rumors abound that locals still see the horseman in The Old Dutch Burying Ground, where Irving himself is buried.

One such mansion, the Philipsburg Manor, is completely transformed during the month of October to be the realm of the Headless Horseman. The 300-year-old home is filled to the brim with Ichabod’s court of witches, vampires, and soldier zombies.

Halloween Party

The history of Halloween

Halloween began as an ancient Celtic festival more than 2,000 years ago. The festival of Samhain (pronounced “sow-in”), which marked the end of the harvest season, and the beginning of winter was celebrated on the night of October 31st. This time of year was often associated with death and darkness.

The Pagan Celts believed that on the night of Samhain, the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred, and that ghosts and other supernatural beings could more easily cross over into the world of the living. To ward off these spirits, people would light bonfires and wear costumes and masks to disguise themselves as ghosts and other creatures.

When Christianity spread to the Celtic lands, the church attempted to replace Samhain with a Christian holiday called All Saints’ Day, which was celebrated on November 1st. The night before All Saints’ Day became known as All Hallows’ Eve, which eventually became Halloween.

7 spooky destinations for a Halloween vacation

Mackenzie Roche

For many people around the world, the start of fall means one thing: Halloween.

Many believe this holiday can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which means "summer's end." People dressed in costumes to celebrate the harvest season and ward off evil spirits (which they believed to be more prominent during this time of year).

Additionally, in A.D. 837, Pope Gregory IV officially declared Nov. 1 as All Saints' Day, and many cultures began celebrating All Hallows' Eve the night prior. Countries worldwide still observe these autumn events in their own ways, such as Teng Chieh in China and Dia de los Muertos in Mexico (and other Latin American countries).

There are plenty of places to celebrate Halloween, but some destinations go above and beyond.

From pumpkin-carving events and festivals to eerie forests and haunted houses, here are destinations in the U.S. and beyond that are teeming with Halloween spirit.

Salem, Massachusetts

halloween travel destinations

The infamous witch trials of 1692 made Salem one of the world's spookiest cities. On any given day of the year, visitors can tour haunted sites such as the Witch House, the House of the Seven Gables, Proctor's Ledge and the Howard Street Cemetery.

However, each October, this New England destination celebrates its storied past with Halloween festivities that span the entire month. The event features parades (including a special pet parade), film nights, a costume ball, ghost tours, haunted houses, live music and theater performances. Visit Salem's event website to see what activities will occur each day.

Just wandering the city's historic streets and perusing spellbinding shops can be enough to inspire a Halloween mood. You can purchase some witchy products — such as herbs, crystals and spell kits — at Crow Haven Corner or HausWitch Home + Healing. Or, buy your own wand at Wynott Wands.

Where to stay

Stay in the heart of downtown Salem at the Hampton Inn Salem Boston for about $550 per night. Or, save your cash and use 70,000 Hilton Honors points per night for a standard room.

You can also book a room at the Boston Marriott Peabody, about a 15-minute drive from downtown Salem. In October, a stay here starts at around $260 or 40,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night for a standard room.

New Orleans

Many people know New Orleans for its springtime Mardi Gras festivities. However, the city's Halloween celebrations also draw massive crowds.

The Big Easy is known for having a haunted history. It has an abundance of above-ground cemeteries, where spirits are said to linger, and it has provided inspiration for vampire folklore.

Some of its most haunted spots include Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop Bar, where guests have attested to seeing ghosts of pirates and of a woman in black, and St. Louis Cathedral, where the ghost of a 1700s pastor still reportedly roams.

Locals celebrate the city's spookiness during its Halloween parade, zombie run and street parties. New Orleans Voodoo — a folk religion connected to nature and spirits, with roots in West Africa — is now a prominent part of the city's culture. The area's Voodoo stores sell niche goods that promise to help cleanse homes and keep spirits away.

For the full supernatural experience, take a ghost tour around the French Quarter to see haunted houses, then stop by one of the many costume shops to prepare for the parties. Most events occur from Oct. 19 to Oct. 31.

There are plenty of Marriott, Hilton and Hyatt outposts around the city for easy redemption opportunities.

Daring Omni Select Guest members can use free night certificates to cover the cost of a stay at the luxurious Omni Royal Orleans — one of the city's many supposedly haunted hotels. (Some past guests have reported encounters with friendly ghosts while staying at the Omni.) Cash rates here start at about $200 per night.

If you want to earn or redeem points while in New Orleans, consider staying at the JW Marriott New Orleans; in October, rooms start at about 55,000 Marriott Bonvoy points or $240 per night. Other solid options include The Higgins Hotel New Orleans, Curio Collection by Hilton for around 40,000 to 60,000 Hilton Honors points (or $200 to $300) per night or the Hotel Indigo New Orleans — French Quarter for as few as 18,000 IHG One Rewards points (or around $100) per night.

Sleepy Hollow, New York

halloween travel destinations

This town became well known thanks to Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," a famous story featuring the terrifying Headless Horseman. The eerie setting that once inspired Irving provides an ideal backdrop for many unique Halloween festivities throughout October.

On select days, visitors can participate in the Octagon House Myths and Mysteries Tour, which leads them through the supposedly haunted house mentioned in Irving's book.

The main event is Hulda's Night at Rockefeller State Park Preserve. Bring a lantern and venture deep into the woods with a guide for an evening of chilling tales and folklore. This year, the event will occur from Oct. 18-21 and between Oct. 25 and 28.

You can take a self-guided tour of Lyndhurst Mansion — a spooky Gothic Revival-style house where a multitude of scary movies have been filmed — on Oct. 21, 22, 28 and 29. Enjoy orange and black cookies, cider doughnuts and apple cider after you tour the house, which is adorned with Halloween decorations. Another highlight is the Tarrytown Halloween Parade, which features refreshments, live music and performances. It falls on Oct. 28.

Earn or redeem points during your Halloween adventure by staying at a local points-eligible hotel. The SpringHill Suites Tarrytown Westchester County is a good option at 32,000 Marriott Bonvoy points (or $200) per night; it's about 2 miles from Sleepy Hollow.

Buena Park, California

Just a few miles from Disneyland , Buena Park is home to one of the state's most popular amusement parks: Knott's Berry Farm . Both of these parks offer prime Halloween celebrations for the whole family.

If you're visiting Southern California with young children, consider celebrating Halloween at Disneyland . From Sept. 1 to Oct. 31, the theme park features seasonal events like fireworks displays, special performances and a pumpkin festival. There's a spooky spin on many of your favorite rides, and Disneyland characters wear their best fall attire.

Every fall, Knott's Berry Farm transforms into Knott's Scary Farm. Special Halloween events feature more than 1,000 costumed cast members ready to startle and scare you. Guests can also explore haunted mazes and enjoy Halloween performances. It operates on select dates from Sept. 21 to Oct. 31. Keep in mind that this event isn't ideal for children under 13 because of its scary nature.

During your visit, offset the amusement park entry fees by staying at one of the points-eligible hotels in the area. Stay at the Hampton Inn & Suites Buena Park for $192 or 45,000 Hilton Honors points per night. Or, reserve a room at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Anaheim North/Buena Park for $146 or 30,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

From Gothic churches and ancient castles to dim alleyways and historic streets, London 's vibe lends itself well to Halloween festivities.

London hosts a wide array of events every year leading up to Halloween. This year, visitors can tour the city's tombs, take a spooky river cruise or explore dungeons. Embrace your inner witch or wizard on The Making of "Harry Potter" tour at the Warner Bros. studio.

Looking for something spookier? Visit London's haunted houses, including Hampton Court Palace, where the ghost of Henry VIII's fifth wife supposedly still lingers. Additionally, there are plenty of Halloween parties at clubs around the city, so be sure to pack your best costume.

London brims with points-eligible hotels to offset the cost of your trip. Consider Residence Inn London Tower Bridge, with room rates from $255 or 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points a night. Or, splurge with a stay at the Conrad London St. James, where rooms start at about $500 or 200,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

Derry, Northern Ireland

halloween travel destinations

Also known as Londonderry, this city on the River Foyle is known for the intact 17th-century Derry's Walls with seven gates. It also hosts Europe's largest Halloween celebration.

Derry Halloween began in 1985 as a traditional Celtic Samhain festival. It has since grown into a massive event featuring art fairs, costume contests, parades, musical performances, storytelling presentations, haunted houses, food trucks and more.

The free event draws thousands of people each year. Although some events are scarier than others, the festival is family-friendly. This year, Derry Halloween runs from Oct. 28-31.

If you want to stay right near the action, consider using IHG One Rewards points to book a room at the Holiday Inn Express Derry — Londonderry for 45,000 points (or $179) per night. Or, stay on the outskirts of the downtown area by using Best Western Rewards points at the Best Western Plus White Horse Hotel; rates start at 28,000 points (or $155) per night.

Transylvania, Romania

Halloween in Transylvania is less about the parties and more about visiting the region's historic and haunted landmarks.

Arguably, the biggest lure here is Bran Castle. This 14th-century structure built into a mountainside is believed to have housed Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration behind the legendary stories of Count Dracula.

The castle is open for tours year-round, and visitors can explore its many tunnels and spooky corners with a guide. If you want to visit the castle for the Halloween celebration (which takes place on Oct. 28 this year), you can book daytime or nighttime tickets here .

Combo tickets for the Halloween celebration include a special tour and a party with a DJ. You can also opt for The Count Special Guest ticket, which adds on a four-course dinner and wine at Queen Marie's Tea House. On other days, you can buy tickets to the castle online or book a formal tour that leaves from the capital city of Bucharest.

If you're traveling with children, the castle hosts a more child-friendly Halloween event on Oct. 29.

Other nerve-tingling attractions in Transylvania include Corvin Castle — one of Europe's largest castles, where Vlad the Impaler is said to have been held prisoner for seven years — and Teleki Mansion, which is reportedly haunted by a ghost.

The haunted Hoia Baciu Forest, featured in an episode of "Ghost Adventures," is another scary area attraction; it's said that spirits linger in the crooked trees of this forest, so enter at your own risk. These sites are within a few hours' drive of each other, so it's beneficial to rent a car or book a guided tour to explore easily.

If you want to stay in Bucharest, consider redeeming Marriott Bonvoy points at The Marmorosch Bucharest, Autograph Collection for 26,000 points (or $150) per night; if you want to be in the Transylvania area, use Hilton Honors points at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Sighisoara — Cavaler for 18,000 points (or $70) per night.

These days, when we celebrate Halloween, what often comes to mind are kooky costumes, scary decorations, and lots of sweets. However, there’s so much more history to this holiday than many realize. Back then, people would adorn costumes and light bonfires to ward off ghosts. Today, it is an occasion to dress up, go trick-or-treating, and take part in many other festivities! How about experiencing Halloween in an entirely different way this year. With so many destinations across the world brimming with Halloween spirit, why not travel to a new destination that has its own traditions and ways to celebrate Halloween. And since it’s a popular holiday across the globe, there’s surely no shortage of Halloween destinations to travel to. Come let’s discover some spooky and fun places to celebrate Halloween this year.

Table of Contents

A Brief History Of Why We Celebrate Halloween

The very name “Halloween” comes from the old European celebration of All Hallows’ Eve, the eve of the Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day (also known as All Saint’s Day). During this festival, people celebrated the hallows (meaning saints, not magical objects!). People would even dress up as saints and go door to door reciting songs, and asking for “soul cakes” – the origin of today’s Trick-or-Treating.

All Souls Day Belgium

Many other Halloween customs we follow today are also influenced by the ancient Gaelic festival of Samhain . Celebrated at the end of October to mark the changing of the seasons and the shortening of days, it involved connecting with the dead. People believed that the boundary between this world and the next was especially thin. Over time this evolved into a more light-hearted celebration, which traveled across the Atlantic with Irish and Scottish immigrants. By the 20th century, it had turned into the costume-wearing, pumpkin-carving, candy-eating holiday we all know and love.

Top 13 Places To Celebrate Halloween

While it has a long and complicated history, many places celebrate Halloween in a vibrant and exciting fashion. Here are some of the best places for Halloween from around the world that won’t disappoint.

Ireland’s Derry City hosts the biggest Halloween festival in Europe, the Banks of Foyle Halloween Carnival. Here you can enjoy haunted houses, ghost tours, parades, horror-storytelling and much more. You can also check out the more relaxed Spirits of Meath festival in Meath, which features pumpkin carving contests. Edinburgh Halloween

Much like Ireland, Scotland has Celtic roots and also has many traditions related to Samhain. Even after the advent of Christianity, many of these customs remained. These include “guising,” where children go from door to door carrying lanterns made out of turnips in costumes for sweets or coins, as well as apple dunking, where you must retrieve an apple from a bucket of water using only your mouth. Halloween is such an integral part of Scottish culture that it has become the subject of many poems, most famously ‘Halloween’ by Robert Burns. According to him, Halloween is “thought to be a night when witches, devils, and other mischief-making beings are all abroad on their baneful midnight errands”. If you plan to visit Scotland this Halloween, make sure to check out Edinburgh’s Royal Mile with its creepy vaults, underground passages, and unsolved mysteries.

All of the cities we covered in this post so far have a Halloween spirit but el Isla de la Munecas gives the word ‘scary a new meaning’. This Mexican island is one of the  most haunted islands in the world  and its history is rather curious. Back in the 1950s, the only resident of this island was a man named Julian Santana Barrera. One day, he found the body of a little girl at the shore. Supposedly, the girl’s ghost kept haunting Julian, and to please her, he started hanging dolls from every single tree he could find on the island.

There are stories of people who visited the islands claiming that the dolls move and whisper in the night. To make everything even scarier, years after discovering the girl’s body, Julian drowned himself on the same spot where he found the body.

Oaxaca, Mexico

oaxaca dia de los muertos

If you want to experience something new this Halloween, why not head to Mexico and celebrate Dia de los Muertos? Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday in which people welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion. This holiday shares the same roots with Halloween but it’s an entirely different holiday with celebrations across Mexico that last for 3 days.

The best place in Mexico to experience Dia de los Muertos is probably Oaxaca, a city known for having the biggest Dia de los Muertos celebration in the world. For this day, the entire city turns into a massive fiesta. However, keep in mind that this is a religious (and important) traditional holiday and should not be treated as a tourist attraction.

Dublin, Ireland

Dublin Halloween

Dublin is one of the best places to celebrate Halloween in Europe. After all, let’s not forget that Halloween originated in Ireland. The predecessor of Halloween was an ancient Celtic holiday known as Samhain. Throughout the years, the holiday evolved into Halloween that we know and love today but going back to the roots of a holiday is always a nice experience.

Every year, across Ireland, you’ll find an exciting atmosphere for Halloween, and Dublin hosts one of the liveliest celebrations of this holiday. There are many parties and festivals devoted to Halloween and Irish people sure know how to celebrate (as you already may know).

Meath, Ireland

meath ireland halloween

Another great Halloween destination in Ireland is the town of Meath, the place where (according to historic sources) Halloween (or Samhain) originally began. The town itself isn’t very spooky and doesn’t have many places you might call haunted but the atmosphere in Meath during Halloween is a reason enough to visit. Meath is also one of the rare cities in Ireland that combines the Halloween celebration with traditional elements of the ancient festival of Samhain. This is arguably the largest Halloween festival in Ireland with an equal balance of scary night events and good old-fashioned festival fun.

Derry, Northern Ireland

derry halloween

Even though technically another country, Northern Ireland is connected to the ancient festival of Samhain as much as Ireland. The most prominent example of this is the city of Derry. Derry is one of the rare cities outside of the US to be dotted as “the best Halloween destination in the world” by USA Today (2015). The locals of Derry are crazy about Halloween and the festivities and celebrations are even crazier. Every year, the festival in Derry is even bigger than the previous year with more international visitors as time passes by. So, if you’re looking for a place to celebrate Halloween outside of the US, Derry is one of the best Halloween destinations in the world.

Today, this is the biggest celebration of Halloween in France with a plethora of festivities, events, fairs, streets shows, costume and storytelling competitions, and more than 50,000 visitors.

Transylvania, Romania

transylvania best halloween destinations in the world

What kind of list of the best Halloween destinations in the world would this be if we didn’t include Transylvania? Aside from being one of the most scenic regions of Romania , Transylvania is famous for its dark history and the famous legend of Count Dracula that originates from here. In Transylvania, you can find many ancient scary-looking castles , villages that seem to be frozen in time, many fascinating stories, and much more.

Halloween as a holiday isn’t a very big deal in Romania but what better way to celebrate it than through a one-of-a-kind, creepy experience in the “vampire stronghold” of Europe. If you want to spend your Halloween at some of the scariest locations in the world, consider visiting Bran Castle, Rasnov Fortress, Teleki Mansion, and the notorious Hoia Baciu Forest (a supposedly haunted forest where several UFO sightings were spotted according to witnesses).

If you’re looking for a less touristy version of Prague or Transylvania for your next Halloween adventure, you may want to consider Slovakia’s Oravsky Hrad. Oravsky Hrad or Orava Castle is a spooky-looking castle built on top of a high rock next to the bank of the Orava River. This castle was used for the shooting of 1922 horror classic Nosferatu, one of the scariest movies of its time and a pioneer in the horror movie niche.

City of the Dead, Russia

Dargavs city of the dead

At a glance, the Ossetian commune of Dargavs looks like a charming village but once you get there, you’ll see that there’s something wrong. Each one of the beautiful houses is actually a tomb for entire Ossetian families. If you take a walk around the village and peek inside the houses, you will easily spot piles of skeletons.

According to local historians, these “tombs” date to a couple of hundred years ago when the village was affected by the plague. Many people died and in desperation some people just stayed in the family crypt waiting for their own death, knowing no one will be around to bury them.

This is where the nickname- City of the Dead comes from. Today, Dargavs is cut off from  the rest of Russia  located on a three-hour drive from the nearest living settlement. Obviously, Halloween is not celebrated there and tourist infrastructure is poor, but if you want to visit a scary place for Halloween, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Did you ever visit any of these places? How did you like this list of the best Halloween destinations in the world? Do you think there are a few other places we should add to our list? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!

With the festival also including flicks in dark fantasy, sci-fi, suspense, dark comedy, and thriller, it definitely covers the scope of what horror films can be. Part of America's Historic Triangle , the three communities have Halloween events that addresses everyone in the family. Elementary-school-age children explore haunted settings and go trick-or-treating at Family Frights in Jamestown, celebrate fall and hear stories of ghostly encounters in Yorktown , or sit in on a Halloween-themed museum talk at the Haunting on D.O.G. Universal's Halloween Horror Nights runs early September through early November and with its haunted houses, scare zones, attractions, and live entertainment, there's certainly no shortage of scare opportunities. But if you're going to Orlando with kids, the full-force terror at Universal may not be the most family-friendly. Instead, head over to Walt Disney World Resort for Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party ! Running from mid-August to early November, kids can enjoy the holiday without being overwhelmed by the more terrifying parts of Halloween. Fun for kids includes trick-or-treating, Disney character meet-and-greets, stage performances, and fireworks.

Iconic ferris wheel of Pripyat

While the event itself happened in Chernobyl, the radiation-contaminated an estimated 150,000 square kilometres of the surrounding land, impacting not only Ukraine but also Belarus and Russia. A number of people died in the initial explosions and dozens more contracted radiation sickness, suffering a prolonged and painful death.

Catch view of Venice at Night

The island of Poveglia is the hotspot for paranormal phenomena and was once used as a quarantine zone for those suffering from the plague. As if that history isn’t enough to encourage a few ghostly residents, the island later housed a psychiatric hospital and today, is said to be full of spirits reluctant to pass on.

If it’s a Halloween party you’re after, you’re in the right place! Venice puts on several events every Halloween, from horror mazes to guided ghost hunts and street processions. Don your best costume, it’s going to be spook-tacular!

10. Derry, Northern Ireland

Did you know that Derry, officially known as Londonderry, was voted the best place to celebrate Halloween by readers of USA Today ? While many think that spooky season was invented in the United States, its roots run far deeper in Celtic Ireland.

Dating back to over 2,000 years ago, the Celtic festival of Samhain is believed to have been the original festival that grew into the Halloween that we know today. There are markets and festivities beginning on 28th October until 1st November in Guildhall Square and Waterloo Place.

Billed as Europe’s biggest Halloween festival, the city hosts loads of events for the four-day celebrations. Don’t miss the Halloween Carnival Parade which attracts thousands of guests.

Filled with dance troupes, street performers and all kinds of ghoulies, the festivities are topped off with an epic firework display.

11. Strandir, Iceland

This lesser-known eastern coastal region of Iceland’s Westfjords is a remote area with a long history of witchcraft and sorcery. As well as offering a fascinating peek into Icelandic folklore, this area allows tourists to see a different side of the island.

Most famous for being the location of Strandgaldur, better known as the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft, this is a great place to visit if you want to honour the Halloween holiday without the need to play dress up.

The unique European museum showcases a range of chilling artifacts such as animal skulls and ritualistic stones. The most famous piece in the museum are the ‘necropants’, a horrifying spell aid made from dried human skin. Put simply, these are leggings made from a real-life man, bits and all…

Much more than just grisly objects, Strandgaldur also reveals plenty about witchcraft throughout the years in Iceland. Unlike elsewhere in the world, it was traditionally men who were accused of witchcraft here and at least 20 lost their lives when they were burnt at the stake. Owing to its secluded location, this part of the country is best reached by car.

And there you have it! This round-up of the best European destinations for Halloween will have you simply itching to get away. From colourful carnivals to fire festivals and goths galore, you’ll find something for all the gang at these creepy celebrations!

California is full of beautiful destinations and fun attractions to experience.

California's attractions are so diverse that travelers of all types will have no problem finding things to thrill them. Beaches , lakes , forests, mountains and deserts all sit side by side within the state's borders. Amid its natural wonders, California is also home to several wine regions, luxury hotels and, of course, star-studded Hollywood. With all this and so much more, it may be challenging to figure out how to fit all the state's most important must-sees in one or more trips.

Let this guide assist you in your California vacation planning, whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned pro. From the north to the south and everything in between, these are the top things to do in California.

17-Mile Drive

Lone Cypress, a prominent landmark along the 17 Mile Drive, on a foggy day

California's 17-Mile Drive is a spellbinding and awe-inspiring route that weaves along the most scenic stretch of the Monterey Bay coastline. This must-visit road, winding through the exclusive community of Pebble Beach, takes drivers up into the Del Monte Forest, past palatial mansions and down along picture-perfect craggy beaches and bluffs. Take time to stop at the various lookout points marked along the way, including the famous Lone Cypress.

If you're interested in bedding down in Pebble Beach, consider splurging on a room, or at least stopping for a meal, to behold the stunning scenery that surrounds the properties at Pebble Beach Resorts, including The Lodge at Pebble Beach or The Inn at Spanish Bay . If you are not staying overnight or dining here, expect to pay a vehicle fee to access 17-Mile Drive. Also note that motorcycles are not allowed.

Carmel-by-the-Sea

Empty trail by the coastline at Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.

This small community in Monterey County is one of the most unique and charming towns in California. Its enchanting coastal location, wooded streets, fairytale-like architecture, and bevy of local shops and restaurants make Carmel-by-the-Sea well worth the detour from the iconic state Route 1. Even if you only have a half-day in Carmel, browse the art galleries, take a walk on the beach and enjoy a meal in one of the quaint restaurants.

Be sure to visit a few of Carmel's beaches, starting with the namesake Carmel Beach, which is located at the end of Ocean Avenue, the town's main drag; pet owners will be pleased to know it's a dog-friendly beach . Carmel River State Beach, which is lesser known and typically not as highly trafficked, connects to the even more secluded Monastery Beach via the Carmel Meadows Trail. As for where to stay, consider treating yourself to one of the town's luxurious accommodations, including traveler-approved L'Auberge Carmel or La Playa Carmel .

Visit the theme parks

You are truly spoiled for choice when it comes to theme parks in California. The impressive amount of options will please every type of traveler. Kids will naturally be dazzled by Anaheim's world-famous Disneyland Resort . However, if you're not up for paying Disneyland's notoriously high ticket fees, consider exciting alternatives such as Legoland California . There are Six Flags amusement and water parks near both Los Angeles and San Francisco – perfect for thrill-seekers – and Universal Studios Hollywood is home to the popular Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the new Super Nintendo World.

Due to the popularity of these parks, you'll have no problem finding nearby accommodations. Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa is a top choice among travelers, as is The Garland for those visiting Universal Studios Hollywood. Legoland has two kid-friendly hotels to choose from, though travelers can also opt for a stay at the well-received Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach, a Hilton Resort and Spa , which is located right on the beach and only a short drive to Legoland.

Yosemite National Park

Yosemite Valley National Park with a huge waterfall

If you only have time to visit one outdoor destination during your California trip, make it Yosemite . With the national park welcoming more than 3 million visitors per year, Yosemite Valley has been known to stir awe for centuries with its grand granite peaks, magnificent waterfalls and lush evergreen landscapes. There is so much to do in this nearly 750,000-acre park that you'll need several days to take it all in. If you're unsure where to start at this California bucket list destination, know that Glacier Point, Half Dome, Tunnel View and the Mist Trail are considered iconic, can't-miss Yosemite attractions , according to recent travelers.

There are three hotels within Yosemite, including the luxury Ahwahnee hotel. You'll also find cabins, canvas-sided tents, campgrounds and RV campsites spread around the park, as well as several dining options. Be warned that the park does get very crowded during the summer months, so visiting in the offseason is a great idea – especially with Yosemite's picturesque snow-capped peaks. Check for road closures during winter months; tire chains may be required.

Explore the desert

Springtime flowers in desert in California

To properly appreciate California's diverse geological landscape, you'll need to venture beyond the coast and explore the desert. Luckily, two magnificent desert landscapes can be found less than three hours from Los Angeles and San Diego. Joshua Tree National Park , located about 130 miles east of Los Angeles, is an approximately 800,000-acre oasis dotted with the unique Joshua tree, which can only be found in the American Southwest. Meanwhile, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, located about 85 miles northeast of San Diego, is California's largest state park and features striking scenery ranging from slot canyons to palm oases.

Both of these parks offer memorable hiking trails and camping options. You'll want to plan a multiday trip to explore either of these vast parks. Traveler favorites in Joshua Tree include the 3-mile out-and-back Ryan Mountain trail and the 1.7-mile Skull Rock loop trail. In Anza-Borrego, visitors enjoyed the 2.6-mile out-and-back Pictograph Trail and the more moderate 2.3-mile Slot loop trail. Due to the desert's extreme summer heat (think: daytime temperatures in the 90s or even 100-plus degrees), it's best to visit during the spring and fall.

Laguna Beach

Aerial view of residences along Laguna Beach

If you're interested in experiencing small-town Southern California, Laguna Beach is the perfect place to start. Conveniently situated between Los Angeles and San Diego, Laguna Beach is located along the coast just off state Route 1. Laguna Beach's picturesque setting is characterized by pristine oceanfront parks and a collection of beautiful beaches wedged between its coastal bluffs. Be sure to visit unique cove beaches, such as Victoria Beach and Crescent Bay Beach, as well as larger shorelines, including traveler-favorite Crystal Cove State Park, which receives praise for its beautiful setting between Laguna Beach and Corona del Mar.

Laguna Beach is also home to a bevy of luxurious accommodations , including The Ranch at Laguna Beach and the traveler-approved five-star Montage at Laguna Beach . Once an artists' colony, Laguna Beach is known for its summer art festivals and numerous art galleries. There are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy too, such as mountain biking, skimboarding and hiking. Parking can be hard to find in the summer months and on holiday weekends, but there is a free open-air trolley service that runs along the area's stretch of coastline.

Waves breaking on El Matador beach in Southern California

Located a little more than 30 miles west of Los Angeles, Malibu is often seen as a coastal refuge for the rich and famous. While that impression is certainly true, Malibu is worth a visit for its superb beaches and the exceptional parks a stone's throw away.

Drive up state Highway 1 and make a pit stop at popular shorelines, including Robert H. Memorial State Beach, Zuma Beach and Point Dume State Beach. Nature lovers should also take time to hike some of the many trails at Point Mugu State Park, Topanga State Park or the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. For hikes with spectacular ocean views, hit up the 3-mile Solstice Canyon Loop trail or the challenging 2.7-mile Mugu Peak loop trail. Check for trail closures before heading out.

Due to Malibu's small size and affluence, you won't find many hotels that offer affordable rates, so you might want to bed down in nearby Los Angeles. If you are intent on staying in Malibu, you'll find comfort and luxury at the Malibu Beach Inn , The Surfrider Malibu and Hotel June Malibu. Stop by Malibu Country Mart for high-end shopping and farm-to-table dining, or check out Trancas Country Market for snacks at Vintage Grocers or lunch at Malibu Brewing Company.

Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island in the low sun

While in the San Francisco Bay Area, take a tour of the infamous Alcatraz Island , an island that has housed a fort, military prison and penitentiary. Self-guided audio tours are included with your ferry ticket to Alcatraz: Listen to the stories of past inmates as you walk through what was once a maximum-security prison. On the island, you'll also find an exhibition about the 1969 Native American occupation of Alcatraz that took place for 19 months to advocate for Indigenous civil rights.

Alcatraz features amazing views of the San Francisco skyline, historic gardens and a sanctuary for nesting waterbirds. The ferry ride aboard Alcatraz City Cruises takes about 15 minutes. Advance reservations are recommended.

San Diego skyline from the ocean

The state's second-largest city is a great alternative for those who want a big city experience without the intense traffic and smog of neighboring Los Angeles. San Diego is a premier vacation destination thanks to its diverse array of attractions . Here, you have your pick of fantastic beaches , including Pacific Beach and La Jolla Shores.

Other top things to explore include the world-famous San Diego Zoo, museum-heavy Balboa Park, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and traveler-favorite USS Midway Museum, located in a retired aircraft carrier. You'll find plenty of hotels near various points of interest in San Diego, including by the beach, the bay and downtown. For a real treat, consider a stay at the elegant Fairmont Grand Del Mar or the historic Hotel del Coronado, Curio Collection by Hilton .

Death Valley National Park

Sunrise in Ubehebe Crater at Death Valley National Park, California

This national park is one for the books, breaking records as both one of the hottest places on Earth and the driest land in North America. A visit to Death Valley is not easy; the closest major airport sits nearly two hours away in Las Vegas . Should you decide to make the trek, you'll be rewarded with memorable desert landscapes, including walkable sand dunes and Artists Drive, a 9-mile paved road past colorful hills. There's also the Racetrack, which is home to the famous moving rocks. If you'd like to stay within the park, know that there are a variety of campgrounds and lodging options, including The Oasis at Death Valley.

Waterfall along coast in Big Sur, California

This laid-back remote region located along the central coast of California should be on everybody's bucket list. The beauty of Big Sur is so palpable and restorative that it's become a popular spot for a wellness retreat. You can achieve this with a stay at the famous Esalen Institute, a holistic educational and wellness center, or at the luxurious Alila Ventana Big Sur , where you can book spa treatments and wellness activities. Travelers can also practice mindfulness while taking in all of Big Sur's stunning natural sights .

First-time visitors should stop and admire Bixby Bridge, hike along the coast at Andrew Molera State Park and visit McWay Falls at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. You can also check out the inspiring Hawthorne Gallery or browse the Henry Miller Memorial Library before capping off the day by sitting in an Adirondack chair in the river at the Big Sur River Inn or catching a sunset at Pfeiffer Beach, home to the famous Keyhole Arch. Don't miss out on the delectable pastries at Big Sur Bakery. For lunch with a view and artisan souvenirs, Nepenthe is a must.

If Ventana Big Sur is out of your price range for accommodations , consider a stay at the more affordable Glen Oaks Big Sur or the Big Sur Lodge, both of which earn high praise from travelers for their serene woodland settings. Or, pitch a tent at Ventana Campground.

Indulge in wine country

Vineyard in Napa Valley, California

Many are aware of Napa Valley 's reputation as a world-class wine destination , but Napa isn't the state's only wine producing hot spot. Sonoma is considered Napa's more casual sibling, offering more diversity in terms of attractions , including the beaches of Sonoma Coast State Park and the African-style game drives run by Safari West. Travel farther south to experience the Santa Ynez Valley, considered one of the most diverse grape-growers in the country. Meanwhile, Temecula Valley Wine Country, found north of San Diego, has produced hundreds of award-winning wines from its member wineries. With so many wine regions in California, you are likely to be within driving distance of at least one wherever you are in the state.

Behold the giant sequoias and redwoods

Road through Sequoia National Park

Did you know that the Pacific Coast of the U.S. is the only place in the world where giant sequoias and coastal redwoods grow naturally? Visiting these natural wonders is a must-do when in the Golden State. Contrary to popular belief, redwoods and sequoias are not the same tree; they require two separate climates to survive. To see giant sequoias, head into the Sierra Nevada mountain range, such as to Sequoia National Park , where you'll find the world's largest tree measured by volume: General Sherman.

To marvel at giant redwoods, you have your pick of Redwood National Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park or Humboldt Redwoods State Park (don't miss the Shrine Drive Thru Tree). All these parks sit in northwestern California. These parks offer a variety of camping experiences, such as individual campsites, group sites and trail camps for wilderness backpacking and backcountry camping. Tent camping sites and cabins are available.

Summer views across Lake Tahoe

If you're the kind of traveler who enjoys a lake vacation , know that Lake Tahoe is California's best. Situated in Northern California, Lake Tahoe is so big that is spills into neighboring Nevada. This alpine lake destination is lauded for its spectacular clear blue waters and beautiful mountainous landscape, and it features some of the best skiing in the country .

If you're visiting during winter, enjoy a ride along the slopes of Heavenly Ski Resort and Northstar California Resort. During the summer, soak up the sun with a dip at Kings Beach State Recreation Area or with a hike through one of the many trails that meander around the lake, such as the 4.4-mile out-and-back Emerald Point Trail at Emerald Bay State Park. What's more, there are a bevy of highly rated hotels in the area, including The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe ; The Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe; and the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino .

Experience wildflower season

Orange wildflowers across mountain in California

Spring and summer are great times to see an abundance of wildflowers – such as the state flower. Depending on where you go, the California poppy has been known to blanket valleys and hills with its vibrant orange tint. How much of a bloom you see and where varies based on the year's seasonal rainfall. Some of the best places to see wildflowers are in Southern California. Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, Point Mugu State Park, Figueroa Mountain Recreation Area and Chino Hills State Park are a few of the most popular locations where you can spot pretty flowers.

If your California travels will be concentrated in the north, try North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve or Lake Tahoe, the latter of which is known to feature a spectacular seasonal display of violet and deep blue lupines. Just be sure to respect the landscapes by staying on designated trails, checking to see if dogs are permitted before you bring your furry friend, and visiting only during park hours.

Santa Barbara

Aerial of white buildings in Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara enjoys a beautiful location wedged between the coast and the mountains, affording visitors plenty of opportunities for hiking and time at the beach. Can't-miss shorelines include Summerland Beach, Arroyo Burro Beach and Leadbetter Beach. Santa Barbara's alluring Spanish and Mediterranean architecture also makes this destination feel like a true getaway.

Visit the Funk Zone for wine tasting and art, State Street for shopping and dining, and the one-of-a-kind Ganna Walska Lotusland. Hotel options in Santa Barbara are just as dreamy as the setting, with highly rated spots like The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara and El Encanto, a Belmond Hotel . What's more, Santa Barbara sits around 100 miles northwest of Los Angeles (about a two-hour drive), which could make it a convenient addition to your LA itinerary.

Learn to surf at Huntington Beach

Huntington Beach Pier at sunset with dramatic clouds and a surfer

One of the most quintessentially Californian things to do during your trip is learn how to surf . There are several places you can surf up and down the coast, but beginners shouldn't go just anywhere: The best shorelines for novice surfers feature calm waters and knowledgeable lifeguards. Surf City USA (the nickname for Huntington Beach ) fits that bill perfectly, with several surf schools here. Highly rated operators include Corky Carroll's Surf School, Learn2Rip Surfing and Ocean Academy, and Banzai Surf School. After hitting the waves, rest your sore muscles at top-rated beachfront hotels , including the Kimpton Shorebreak Resort or the Pasea Hotel & Spa .

Explore one or more of the national forests

National park in California on a sunny day

Did you know California has the most national forests of any state in the nation? In addition to its famous national parks, California has 18 national forests to its name. If you are vacationing in the southern part of the state, consider a visit to the Cleveland, Angeles, San Bernardino or Los Padres national forests (but check with the U.S. Forest Service before you go to ensure they're not under closure orders caused by fire or storm damage when you visit). These options sit in proximity to vacation hot spots like San Diego, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

North of Sacramento, outdoor lovers have their choice of nearly a dozen national forests, including the Mendocino, Six Rivers and Klamath national forests, to name a few. These forest destinations offer beautiful wilderness landscapes, hiking trails and camping options.

Trek along the Lost Coast

The Lost Coast in California on a sunny day

Intrepid travelers looking to experience the untouched landscapes of California should consider a trek along one-of-a-kind Lost Coast. Located less than 40 miles south of Eureka in Northern California, the Lost Coast is an undeveloped stretch of coastline. Unlike Big Sur, which shares similar geography, the Lost Coast is devoid of major roads and can be accessed via a 25-mile-long hiking trail. The trail takes about two to four days to traverse (one way), so you should only attempt this hike if you're an experienced backpacker.

Visitors who make the journey will be treated to peace and quiet, empty beaches and plenty of wildlife, ranging from elk to elephant seals, not to mention striking views of the King Range, a collection of mountains that hug the coastline. Camping is allowed on the coast, but you need to obtain a backcountry permit in order to do so.

Point Reyes National Seashore

Point Reyes National Seashore from Chimney Rock trail at sunset

Point Reyes National Seashore gives visitors a glimpse into a wilderness landscape on the Northern California coastline with no development. Conveniently situated less than 40 miles northwest of San Francisco, this national seashore is easier to reach than Big Sur and the Lost Coast.

Here, you'll be treated to breathtaking stretches of coastline, some of which are only accessible by trail, including the popular 9.7-mile round-trip Tomales Point Trail. A visit to Point Reyes will also take you through verdant, wooded landscapes and put you in close contact with wildlife such as elk, bobcats, seals, beavers and much more. You'll find campgrounds on-site for backcountry hike-in and boat-in camping, as well as modest accommodations in nearby towns, including Olema, Point Reyes Station and Inverness.

Griffith Observatory

Aerial view of Griffith Observatory and Los Angeles city skyline at sunset in California

Griffith Observatory sits on the south face of Mount Hollywood and overlooks the Los Angeles basin. Its location gives visitors impressive views of the surrounding area, which many rave about. But there's more than just a pretty photo-op here: The observatory hosts fascinating exhibits and features a top-notch planetarium. Recent travelers cited the breathtaking setting as Griffith Observatory's main draw, though the free entry was certainly a bonus. Use of the public telescopes is also free, but you will have to pay a fee for the planetarium shows.

Hollywood Sign

The Hollywood Sign in the distance on Mount Lee, overlooking the Hollywood district of Los Angeles

The iconic Hollywood Sign is located in Griffith Park on Mount Lee. Visitors can hike to this iconic landmark on a few different routes and get sweeping views of LA, but the sign itself is fenced off and is typically guarded. Many visitors say that seeing the sign up close is a must-do.

The sign was originally built in 1923 and read, "Hollywoodland," the name of a real estate development, before the last four letters were removed in 1949. After years of neglect, the dilapidated sign was finally rebuilt in 1978 and has been a universal symbol for the glitz and glamour of the movie industry ever since. In 2023, the sign is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Griffith Park is free and open to the public daily with limited complimentary parking provided throughout the property.

Palm Springs

Golden light over Indian Wells Golf Resort, a desert golf course in Palm Springs, California, with view of the San Bernardino Mountains

If you're looking for a place to unwind, Palm Springs is hard to beat. The Sonoran Desert provides a beautiful backdrop, warm weather and plenty of outdoor activities. In the late fall and early spring, temperatures typically range from the 50s at night to the 80s during the day. If you just want to chill, you can spend the day sipping cocktails poolside or get pampered at a luxurious spa. For travelers seeking an active vacation, other draws to the area include golf, tennis and miles of hiking trails.

A traveler-favorite Palm Springs attraction is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which whisks visitors from the desert floor up 2.5 miles to Mount San Jacinto State Park. When the sun sets, head out to one of the city's hip bars or restaurants for a gourmet meal or craft cocktail, such as Bar Cecil or Mr. Lyons Steakhouse. Make it a weekend away with an overnight stay at a Palm Springs hotel like the new wellness-focused Sensei Porcupine Creek or the modern yet rustic Sparrows Lodge .

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Orange Jellyfish in blue tank at Monterey Bay Aquarium

Located on the central California coast, the Monterey Bay Aquarium draws nearly 2 million visitors per year. This institution houses more than 200 world-class exhibits that highlight the marine habitats of the area, as well as plants and creatures of the deep ocean. Guests can watch sea otters frolicking, witness glowing jellyfish and admire a 28-foot-tall kelp forest.

The aquarium also prides itself on working to protect the Pacific Ocean off California's coast. Its initiatives include reducing plastic pollution in the ocean, promoting sustainable seafood choices and helping rebuild sea otter populations. Past visitors recommend taking a behind-the-scenes tour of the aquarium.
