2020 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited | Tour Test Review

2020 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited Tour Test Review

American V-twin motorcycles are big, boisterous, and have an unmistakable rowdy personality. Love ’em or hate ’em, they immediately assert their presence in the parking lot of any roadside haunt. The thrum of a massive, torque-rich engine and a booming exhaust note have almost become synonymous with Harley-Davidson — best exemplified in its touring machines.

Receiving a spit-shine from the Bar and Shield marque, the 2020 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited replaces the Ultra in H-D’s touring bike lineup and adds premium finishes, along with high-tech options, to an already bright feather in the brand’s cap.

2020 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited Tour Test Review

Subtle updates to the luxury long-hauler come in the form of a gloss-finished inner fairing, painted pinstriping, new badges on the 6.0-gallon fuel tank and fenders, as well as heated grips. A dizzying array of paint options are available this year, along with a Black Finish package ($1,900) that bestows an ebony touch to nearly every piece of hardware. New premium 18-inch Slicer II wheels are the soul mechanical changes, up from 17- and 16-inch wheels on the Ultra.

At its core, it’s still the same shark-nosed Road Glide with the bright LED Daymaker headlights, Boom! GTS infotainment, a massive top-case, premium Showa Dual Bending Valve suspension, linked braking by Brembo, a potent Twin-Cooled Milwaukee-Eight 114 powerplant, palatial seating and fit-and-finish fit for kings. This is a machine for the American V-twin touring faithful, dressed in full regalia.

2020 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited Tour Test Review

The big news this year is optional tech. For $995, any H-D touring bike (save for the Electra Glide Standard) can be equipped with H-D’s Reflex Defensive Rider System, which includes linked-braking cornering ABS, lean-sensitive traction control, hill-start control, tire pressure monitoring and an engine braking management system to reduce rear-wheel lock when decelerating. We’ll dive into its functionality later.

What the Road Glide Limited yearns for is exploring the highways and hidden gems of your state. So, I did just that on this Tour Test, taking the RGL on a two-wheeled pilgrimage through Central California amidst a record-breaking heat wave and wildfires. Both made planning a route with reasonable temperatures and smoke-free scenery for photos a challenge, but it was a mere inconvenience compared to the challenge portions of the Western U.S.  face, battling unprecedented drought and wildfires. The loss of life and property has been staggering, and our hearts go out to those who have had their lives upended.

2020 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited Tour Test Review

With the Tour-Pak and saddlebags filled to the brim, I set off in search of more temperate weather. The fog-blanketed beach cities of California’s coast were more than tempting.

Santa Paula, California, is an unassuming agriculture town nestled in the nook of the Santa Clara River Valley. It’s quaint, quiet, and has loads of quality places to nab a breakfast burrito. It’s also where you can pick up California State Route 150 and venture into the Transverse Ranges, home to numerous legendary motorcycling roads.

2020 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited Horsepower

Action is relatively light on SR 150; it mostly saunters up the hills and allows me to take in the RGL’s lavish accommodations for the first time. At 5-feet, 10-inches, the Limited’s cockpit has everything I can ask for on a long ride. Its plush, supportive leather-bound seat is 27.2-inches high (laden), and the mini-ape handlebar provides all the leverage I could want while keeping me in a neutral position. Floorboards allow plenty of movement during droning freeway rides, although the brake pedal angle is a tad acute. Meanwhile, the triple Splitstream frame-mounted fairing with a tall touring windscreen offers excellent wind protection and airflow.

The Boom! Box GTS infotainment unit’s full-color TFT touchscreen has useful features like navigation, phone connectivity and vehicle data. Audio is clear, even when riding at freeway speeds, and the radio signal is downright impressive. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported. However, you’ll need to have your device connected to the USB port in the fairing cubby, and also be wired in directly with a helmet headset to use them.

2020 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited Tour Test Review

Branching off SR 150 is the legendary State Route 33, a road that any motorcyclist in California worth their salt has traversed. With more views and winding corners than you can shake a stick at, some might even be interested in calling it a day after taking it in. I’d recommend a quick break at one of the many overlooks on Pine Mountain.

Dropping into the flatlands, temperatures spike into the triple digits during the summer in the San Joaquin Valley, making the ride through oil towns such as Maricopa, Derby Acres (population 322!), and Taft a drag if it weren’t for the standard cruise control. Once in Taft, it’s time to top off the RGL because my next stop won’t be until Morro Bay, about 116-miles away and well within the bike’s 217.5-mile fuel range.

2020 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited Tour Test Review

State Route 58 is a gem of a road with variety that’s rarely matched. Epic curves lead into long slogs through majestic wheat fields, and if the time of year and conditions are right, you might catch a California poppy super-bloom.

Roads like the 58 are where the Road Glide Limited shines. Our last 114 M8 engine produced a healthy 78 horsepower at 4,800 rpm and a stomping 104 lb-ft of torque at 2,900 rpm at the rear wheel on the Jett Tuning dyno. If you had doubts about the fully loaded RGL’s ability to get-up-and-go, put them to rest now, because she’ll compress you into the seat lickety-split. The 114ci M8 hums a nice, bassy tune with just enough visceral vibration coming through to let you know that it’s alive.

2020 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited MSRP

The 114’s chunky gearbox makes sturdy, positive shifts befitting of the RGL’s size. However, clutch pull is quite heavy, making clutch modulation during low-speed maneuvers tricky and taxing when in traffic. Luckily, all that luscious torque and well-spaced gear ratios will almost allow you to leave it in 6th gear, settling into a rhythm on a road like 58.

The 922-pound Road Glide takes some effort to lift off the sidestand and is cumbersome at low speeds, like many touring bikes of this size — plan your route carefully in tight spaces. Once you’re rolling, its low center of gravity and gentle handling perform well, and thanks to the Road Glide Limited’s frame-mounted fairing, steering is noticeably lighter than its Electra Glide brethren with fork mounted fairings. A bit of input on the mini-ape hanger bar and the RGL will tip in as quickly and as controlled as you’d like, holding a steady line.

2020 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited Seat Height

The non-adjustable 49mm Showa Dual Bending Valve fork with 4.6-inches of travel does a commendable job of hiding road impurities. The spring preload adjustable rear shock with 3-inches of travel can struggle to deal with hard-edged potholes but does soak up rough roads well, in general.

I did notice that when the pace picks up, the RGL’s plush setup, abbreviated suspension travel and older dual-shock chassis design show their limitations. Over long, fast sweepers, wallowing can be felt that serves as a warning to cool your jets. It never truly gets out of shape, but it’s as if the Road Glide is tapping you on the shoulder, saying, “More Grand Tour, less Gran Tourismo, kid.”

2020 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited Tour Test Review

Branching off 58 is the short, but very sweet SR 229 — colloquially known as “Rossi’s Driveway.” This single-lane, undulating road sweeps through loads of twisting, blind corners in a roughly 8-mile stretch of tarmac and seems like something only a motorcyclist could dream up — hence the reference to Italian MotoGP star, Valentino Rossi. It’s still fun to hustle the big RDL on a road seemingly built for Supermotos.

With the sun setting behind the hills, I connected to State Route 41, making my way to Morro Bay. Even at dusk, inland temperatures this time of year are high. As you drop down toward the coast, the reprieve comes with each mile, eventually leading to a cool, socked-in beach city.

2020 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited Tour Test Review

Morro Bay is a kitschy spot with beautiful views and seafood along the boardwalk, which isn’t a bad place to stretch your legs after a good ride. It’s a surf town with a vibe to match; things happen at their own pace here, unless you’re working the bustling docks or fishing boats. There’s plenty of affordable lodging, as well as more ritzy accommodations and even camping options nearby.

In the morning, we headed south on U.S. 101 in search of winding roads, jumping on SR 166 to Tepusquet Road in the Santa Maria Valley. Much like Rossi’s Driveway, Tepusquet sachets through the mountain range, diving in and out of the valley, with plenty of action to perk you up in the morning. There is something fun about wrangling a bike of this size through narrow, single-lane roads.

2020 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited Tour Test Review

Brembo provides the braking hardware, with 300mm rotors all around. Feel at the lever is progressive and does require a generous pull if you need to stop in a hurry — like when wild turkeys run out in your path.

In those moments, H-D’s RDRS rider aid package goes from optional to mandatory. On compact, often dirty mountain roads, I’ll ride with more confidence when faced with corners filled with debris or obstacles.

2020 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited Tour Test Review

Tepusquet Road spits you out into wine country, with grapevines as far as the eye can see, and onto Foxen Canyon Road. One can saunter along the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail or make the foliage blur along the respectably winding road. Asphalt here is something of a mixed bag due to all the agriculture vehicles, and again, highlights the need for a decent electronics package.

When I hit SR 154, I know that my ride is coming to a close. In a short time, I’ll be winding down the mountain in Santa Barbara, California, and reconnecting with U.S. 101 for the slog back into SoCal. The Road Glide Limited has been a fixture in American V-twin touring due to opulent rider and passenger comfort and massive storage capacity. In 2020, its chassis is beginning to show its age, but when it comes to luxury touring, the feature-loaded Road Glide Limited offers everything else one could want.

Truly enjoyed the mailed subscription better than the digital.

I did not authorize to receive digital over print.

Please start sending a print copy of your magazine as it is difficult to read on phone. Also, back print copies from and including April 2020 would be appreciated. Would like to continue reading a fine magazine in printed form.

I hate reading this on line. I have been receiving this magazine for years, the only motorcycle publication I get. Please start sending me the hard copy. I am seriously considering not renewing my subscription.

I am so damn sick of screen time. Can I get my money back on my subscription?

Thank you so much for sending me the hard copy of your magazine still. Digital is cool but it just isn’t me. Please keep doing what you do.

2020 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Reviews, Comparisons, And Competition

The obvious Road Glide competition this year is the 2020 Indian Challenger . These two American touring motorcycles, the Road Glide Special and Challenger Dark Horse went head to head in this recent Cycle World comparison. In preparation for the aforementioned comparison, we threw the 2020 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Special on our in-house Dynojet 250i rear-wheel dynamometer to find that this model produced 76.13 hp at 4,810 rpm and 108.29 pound-feet of torque at 2,670 rpm.

The Tour Glide / Road Glide History - a complete information guide

harley davidson tour glide

  • Add to quote

I tried to make a wikipedia page, but they shot it down due to lack of references. What they don't realize, there is no references as the history has not been well documented. If you do a google search for Road Glide history, this forum is the only thing that comes up. If you have more to add or corrections, please reply and I will edit so all info is good and up to date. I would love to have listed all color choices for each year, so please help me out there where you can. Most of the initial information came from forum members RoadGlideRider and JacktheBagger - thanks for sharing your knowledge gentlemen. A lot of the missing info is going to take some of you experienced guys to fill in the blanks for me, as information is just not out there on the web. _________________________________ The Harley-Davidson '''Road Glide''' or '''Tour Glide''' is an American made touring motorcycle that was first put into production in the year 1979. The Tour Glide was different then any H-D models before, in that it had a fixed fairing that was attached to the frame and did not move with the handlebars. Today the Road Glide is one of the most popular motorcycles in the custom bagger world, and for long distance touring. The shape of the fairing is often referred to as a "Sharknose" fairing due to the resemblence of a shark. _________________________________ First years - Tour Glide The Tour Glide was introduced in 1979 and only 19 FLT's were produced that year. In the following year Harley produced 4480. The 1980 Tour Glide was the first to have the 5 speed transmission and 3 point rubber mounted engine. The motorcycle also had a rectangular steel back bone , and tubular frame, twin 10" front disc, single 12" rear disc and an enclosed final chain drive. The bike was powered by an 82ci (1338cc) Shovelhead with a bore x stroke of 89 x 108mm and had a wet multiplate clutch, 5 gallon gas tank and the bike weighed 725lbs. The 1981 model brought a VfireII electronic ignition, lower 7.4:1 C.R., longer valve guides, extra oil drain lines from the rocker boxes, revised valve guide seals, and a Girling rear brake caliper. In 1982, the FLT got new handlebars and seat, primary chain oiler, higher output alternator, and locks for the luggage. 1983 only brought a lower seat, and stiffer suspension. From 1979 to early 1984 the tour glide was powered by the Shovelhead engine. In late 1984 until 1996 the motorcycle was powered by the Evolution engine. The early 1984 models had a shovelhead bottom end with an EVO top end. There was never a Police FLT Model. Only FLHT, FXRP, XLP, and Dyna Police models. It is known that the 1984 through 1988 models (at least, maybe more) had air resivors in the crash bars for air assist to the front fork springs. The 1985 model was changed from a final drive chain to a belt. The Tour Glide came without a Radio or gauge mounting positions made into the fairing. To add a radio, you would need to purchase a Radio Caddy from Harley, or several after market companies. Some after market caddys came with the gauges mounted in the radio aaddy. To add Harley gauges, Harley sold ones that required you to drill a hole in the fairing and mount them there. Harley introduced the Radio Caddy for the Tour Glide fairing and was stock beginning with the 1986 model year. It is the same year Harley had the radio in the Inner/outer fairing on the Electra Glide. It was produced by Radio Sound. That radio was only used in the 1986/87 model years. The only major change made that didn't change the name of the model line was to move the turn signals from in the fairing to outside and attached to the lower mounting supports and this happened in 1988. 1989 the "Ultra" model was introduced along with the base FLT model. The alternator was bumped up to 32 amp for 1989 and it also had a one piece pinion shaft and right flywheel. The FLTCU model came standard with cruise control, a CB radio, intercom, front and rear sound systems, and fairing lowers, and two tone paint jobs. The standard FLTs were solid colored bikes. A sidecar option was available for the FLTCU, but only 15 were made in 1989. Total production for 1989 is believed to be 603. The Tour Glide's last year of production was in the 1996 model year, and also the first year for the fuel injection option. There was not any FLT models produced for the 1997 model year. _________________________________ Road Glide years With the introduction of the 1998 model lines, Harley introduced the FLTR Road Glide. This was using the same frame and motor assembly as the Electra Glide, as before, but with a completely redesigned fairing. It included the radio and gauges mounted in the fairing in areas that were made for this purpose. This inner and outer fairing has not changed for the entire production run of the Road Glide. From 1998 to present it has remained the same. The fairing changed slightly and this was the last year for the Evolution engine. In 1999 Harley Touring models got the Twin Cam engine that bumped the displacement up to 88". From 1999 to 2003 the motorcycle had very minimal changes. In 2000 and 2001 Harley offered CVO Road Glides, the FLTRSEI and FLTRSE2. 2004 brought the change from cassette tape to compact disc, and in 2006 the radio manufacture changed from Radio Sound to Harman/Kardon. 2007 the engine displacement increased from 88ci to 96ci and Transmission to 6 Speed, and all Touring Models became EFI standard. In 2008 the fuel tank increased to 6 Gallons. Throttle changed to Throttle By Wire, brakes changed to Brembo Brakes, and an ABS option for all Touring Models. 2009 brought the new frame, rear tire changed to 180 wide rear tire and 17 " front tire. This was the last year of the Road Glide (FLTR). After many years Harley Davidson brought back a CVO Road Glide in 2009 (FLTRSE3). _________________________________ Custom and Ultra years After many rumors that the Road Glide's last year was going to be the 2009 model year, 2010 models came out with a newly designed Road glide called the Road Glide Custom and designated model FLTRX. The bike was basically the same as a Street Glide, just with the shark nose or fixed fairing. The 2010 models was the first and only year to offer a 2 into 1 headpipe. 2010 was also introduced with 18" front tire, lowered rear end with newly designed tail lights, doing away with the center brake light in the middle of the rear fender. In 2010 Harley redesigned the fairing mounting supports. They were redesigned to move the fairing up and re-angle the fairing to make the fairing accept the vented lowers that are now being used on the Electra Glide. Before this models change, the Road Glide required a different lower fairing from and of the "Batwing" or Road King models lines. Cruise Control was made optional (controls removed from handlebars). 2011 Road Glide Custom (FLTRX) same as before with new colors and 103ci motor option and a 2/1/2 headpipe. The Road Glide Ultra (FLTRU) was introduced with a 17" front tire and has the TwinCam 103ci motor. Harley also produced a FLTR CVO Road Glide Ultra (FLTRUSE) with 110ci engine and 18" front and rear tire. 2012 saw both the FLTRX and FLTRU models return, and a FLTRXSE in 3 color offerings. 2011 was definatley a big year for the Road Glide, along with 2012 and the best kept secret in the Harley Davidson line-up, seems to be finally getting some well deserved respect in the touring community. 2013 was another great year for the Road Glide, with the Custom and Ultra returning with new color offerings. Also the FLTRXSE2 returned with addition speakers in the saddlebag lids, 2 paint offerings and the 110 year anniversary edition CVO Road Glide. The FLTRXSE2 came with Harley's new LED lighting for the Road Glides.

hay there's my 84 TG .. Turn signal went from the fairing to the current location in 1988 .. I have yet to see proof that the TG was a 1979 , every reference I have says 1980 .. 80 also saw first rubber mount with the TG and TG was first five speed .. Enclosed chain final drive .. FWIW my late 84 TG cost under $8500 new .. My 88 TG cost under $10000 new .. 1989 first Ultra and it was a TG First FI for TG was in 1996 99 model years see TC 88 JtB

I still have my 1980 TG which is an international model. It was built in 1979 as a 1980 model. Still have all the paperwork that came with it if any one is interested. Oh yes and it cost the equivalent of $8000 US

The Tour Glide was introduced as a 1980 'Model Year' motorcycle. These models are generally introduced at the Summer Dealer Meeting held during the summer of the 'calendar year' before the 'model year'. Therefore it would have been introduced in the calendar year 1979.

that has been my argument all along , a 1980 model introduced in 1979 JtB

Very cool to have this information. Thanks for your efforts, folks.

I just dug out "The Harley-Davidson Motor Company - An Official Eighty Year History, published in 1987. According to a glossary in the back of this book there were 19 FLT's built as 1979's and 4,480 FLT's built as 1980's.

1982 Harley Davidson FLT Tour Glide. Own a piece of history. First year Harley being bought back from AMF. I bought this bike with all intention of building my own personalized tour glide. The bike was too nice to start dismantling. I wanted to offer it up for someone who would drive it as their own, or for collection purposes. Was a family owned bike until I purchased, from uncle, to father , to son. The son had it restored 10 years ago, powder coating frame and having the metallic red paint refinished with all appropriate decals, including the fender emblem which he said was 100.00 in itself. Engine stamping matches title, so this is the original 80 cubic inch engine that was on the bike at time of manufacture. Seems to run and function all just fine other than a slight tappet noise on let back of throttle. Have not had experience with shovels and this may be normal or not, I was going to adjust tappets if I continue to drive this week if weather permits. I will stop driving as soon as I have an offer or a bid. This bike is for sale locally, and I retain the right to end the auction if I sell it for my asking price. I am also driving bike now so if anything where to happen to it, I would also end auction. Local pickup only. Contact me with any questions. First four picks of bike on trailer do not have original seat. That is replaced now. All following pictures are of bike as of current. Bike is sold as is where is. If you have questions ask prior to bidding. 96 cube or larger evo or twin cam engine with matching 6 speed tranny set up for belt final drive. I will deduct from price after auction end. Value pending my approval. 500.00 due at auction end via paypal or cash. With balance due upon pickup within 3 days, unless other arrangements have been made. Cash, or certified check only for balance. No zero feedback bidders, Not shipping overseas. Just a nice bike for someone to enjoy.

I'm listing a 1980 Harley FLT Tour Glide. The bike has several new parts including a Harley-Davidson front tire, Dyna 2000 Electronic Ignition, Brakes including Braided Brake Lines and New HD Hand Grips. The bike has been serviced including new fork seals/oil, all new fluids and a new air filter. I removed the fuel tank and flushed it several times with fuel to clean out rusty particles. I installed a new petcock and a fuel filter. It starts easily and runs great. The lights, horn and turn signals etc.. work as they should. The paint appears to be original and has some flaws and the chrome has some scratches and rust damage (see photos). The windshield has a crack (see photos). I bought the bike from an estate and was not able to speak with the prior owner (deceased). The bike was parked inside a building when it quit running. I found the cause to be the original HD Electronic Ignition Module had failed...I will try to work with a buyer that is somewhat local on delivery with my motorcycle trailer.

2023 Honda Gold Wing Vs Harley-Davidson Road Glide: How Each Touring Bike Compares

man riding bike

In the world of touring bikes, the Honda Gold Wing and Harley-Davidson Road Glide stand out as formidable contenders, each with their own distinct characteristics and allure. As riders embark on journeys spanning long distances, the choice between these two iconic motorcycles becomes a crucial consideration.

Despite their shared commitment to long-distance comfort, these touring bikes diverge at key aspect points. The Road Glide, acknowledged for its heftier build, competes with the robust engine and advanced electronics of the Gold Wing — one of the most reliable Honda motorcycles ever built by our metrics. We have picked performance, design, and tech as criteria to compare and contrast these motorcycles while using reviews from reputed publications like Top Speed as professional primary sources for this article.

In comparing the 2023 Honda Gold Wing and Harley-Davidson Road Glide, we aim to uncover the nuances that set them apart, allowing riders to make an informed decision based on their preferences and the demands of their journeys.

What is the Honda Gold Wing?

The history of the Honda Gold Wing dates back to 1972, when Honda, fresh from the success of the CB750, established an R&D department to create a groundbreaking flagship motorcycle. The project was led by Japanese designer Shoichiro Irimajiri, known for his success in both two and four-wheeled racing. The result was the 1975 Honda Gold Wing, a revolutionary touring motorcycle featuring a four-stroke engine with water-cooling and shaft drive — the Honda Goldwing was the first Japanese production motorcycle with this engine .

At its launch, the Gold Wing was different, offering a blend of speed, reliability, and comfort that set it apart. Despite facing stiff competition from established brands like Harley-Davidson, the Gold Wing gained traction, and in 1980, the GL1100 Interstate elevated it to a new level by becoming the first mass-produced Japanese motorcycle in a complete touring kit.

The evolution continued with the GL1200 in 1984, introducing fuel injection, cruise control, auto-leveling rear suspension, and a trip computer. In 1988, the GL1500 emerged with a six-cylinder engine, setting the stage for constant improvements over 13 seasons. Subsequent years saw steady improvements, including a larger engine in 2001, the introduction of an in-dash navigation system in 2006, and the pioneering addition of an airbag in 2012. This brings us to the 2023 version of the bike, whose specs we will see later. Currently, you can get a brand-new Honda Gold Wing for $25,600.

What is the Harley-Davidson Road Glide?

The Harley-Davidson Road Glide also has a rich history that traces its roots back to the Tour Glide, which was introduced in 1979. The Tour Glide marked a departure with its fixed fairing, distinct from its counterpart, the Electra Glide, which featured a fork-mounted fairing. In 1998, the Tour Glide made way for the Harley-Davidson Road Glide, featuring a frame-mounted Tour fairing reminiscent of the original Tour Glide. This move positioned the Road Glide as a strong contender in the touring motorcycle market.

With the introduction of the Milwaukee-Eight engine in 2016, the Road Glide further solidified its position as a powerhouse in the touring category. Subsequent years saw further refinements, such as changes to fairing mounting supports, the introduction of Cruise Control as an option, and engine enhancements.

The Road Glide's popularity is evident in its continued presence and adaptation to evolving rider preferences. Whether as the Road Glide Special, Limited, Ultra, Custom, or other variations, this touring motorcycle has maintained status as a powerful and reliable touring bike. You can find the standard Road Glide at a price of around $22,000.

Performance

In terms of power, the Gold Wing's flat-six, 1,833cc engine delivers an impressive 125 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque. In contrast, the Road Glide Limited features a Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine with a more significant displacement of 1,868cc but produces 92 hp and 111 lb-ft of torque. While the Road Glide Limited boasts a larger engine, the Gold Wing clearly takes the lead in horsepower and torque, translating to a more robust acceleration.

The top speeds of these touring motorcycles also reflect their design philosophies. The Gold Wing reaches an impressive 140 mph, emphasizing its ability to cover long distances with speed and ease. On the other hand, the Road Glide Limited has a top speed of 105 mph, showcasing a more conservative approach. However, a review by Top Speed confirms that in real-world scenarios, both bikes offer comparable performance, with the Gold Wing's rev-happy nature contrasting the Road Glide Limited's low-end torque.

Handling dynamics play a crucial role in touring comfort, and here, the Gold Wing's design shines, according to Top Speed. Despite being 28 pounds heavier than the Road Glide Limited, the Gold Wing's low center of gravity, thanks to its flat-six engine layout, contributes to a superior level of handling. The Hossack front suspension system enhances stability, eliminating dive under braking. The Road Glide relies on traditional telescopic forks, providing a more straightforward design that works effectively in containing the bike's weight during cornering. The Harley's simplicity might appeal to riders looking for more straightforward handling.

Design and ergonomics

The Honda Gold Wing's design showcases bodywork that contributes to refined aerodynamics, featuring a vented, spoiler-type front fender and substantial fairing that cuts through the wind. The Gold Wing's stadium-style seat for the passenger and practical hard bags enhance its utility for commuting and touring.

Conversely, the Harley-Davidson Road Glide adheres to its classic touring design, drawing on the historical roots of the "FL" family. The front fender's shape echoes the traditional full fender, and fat front forks, with chrome beercan fork skirts, evoke a classic appeal. The fixed Sharknose fairing, a trademark feature since the Tour Glide, integrates dual Daymaker LED headlights.

When it comes to ergonomics, Top Speed reports that both bikes offer all-day comfort with an upright riding position suitable for long distances. The Gold Wing's design suggests thorough wind tunnel testing, emphasizing aerodynamics. On the other hand, while appearing less complicated, the Road Glide provides a comfortable rider triangle. In terms of comfort, the review goes on to say that Harley's seat is often regarded as more comfortable, while both bikes do offer accommodating ergonomics.

The Honda Gold Wing and Harley-Davidson Road Glide, though sharing a touring focus, diverge in their design approaches. The Gold Wing leans more toward innovation, advanced electronics, and a sleek profile, while the Road Glide maintains a classic touring aesthetic with modern infotainment features.

Electronics and tech

When it comes to tech, the Gold Wing takes center stage with a seven-inch color TFT screen as the central hub for all electronics. This includes analog gauges for speed and tach, complemented by LCDs for comprehensive information display. The Gold Wing also has a sophisticated throttle-by-wire system, which features four distinct riding modes: Tour, Sport, Econ, and Rain. Notably, the Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) system deals in rear-wheel slip, and Hill Start Assist simplifies uphill starts. The bike also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

On the other hand, the Harley-Davidson Road Glide features analog gauges, a color TFT screen, and Boom! Box 4.3 infotainment system. The rider aid package offers hands-free mobile phone connectivity via Bluetooth and voice recognition for various functions. The Boom! Box GTS audio system with GPS and 6.5-inch touchscreen offers navigation, communication, and entertainment options.

When comparing the two motorcycles, the Gold Wing and Road Glide surprisingly share similarities in electronic features. Both incorporate an internal measurement unit (IMU) for cornering ABS and traction control. Linked brakes, cruise control, and hill-hold control are standard on both, promoting rider comfort and safety. However, the Gold Wing distinguishes itself with reverse gear, offering added maneuverability in parking and low-speed situations. The cockpit design also sets them apart, with the Gold Wing embracing a more integrated analog and digital layout, while the Road Glide adopts traditional round analog gauges and a large touchscreen.

Harley-Davidson Road Glide Vs Street Glide: Here's Which One Is Better For Touring

Proposed Title Change: Harley-Davidson Road Glide Vs Street Glide: Which Is The Better Touring Motorcycle

Proposed Featured Image Change:

Proposed Excerpt Change: The Harley-Davidson Road Glide and Street Glide are pretty much the same but have different qualities that make one a better tourer than the other.

  • The Harley-Davidson Road Glide and Street Glide are both popular cruisers known for their touring capabilities.
  • Despite sharing many components, there are design and ergonomic differences that appeal to different riders.
  • The Road Glide offers more space, better wind deflection, and is better suited for longer rides, while the Street Glide is slightly lighter and more practical for daily riding.

It's no surprise that motorcycle touring has piqued the interest of enthusiasts at some point in life. Irrespective of age, cruisers are almost always the choice for anyone who prefers long-distance highway touring. While many cruisers are available in the market, only Harley-Davidson is synonymous with the notion.

Harley has been around for a century and is one of the oldest motorcycle manufacturers in the world. Widely regarded as the king of cruisers, Harley-Davidson ventured into multiple genres like street and muscle bikes over the years.

This article has been updated to focus on the 2023 Road Glide and Street Glide models. We give you a detailed run-down of the differences and similarities and which of these two Harley-Davidsons is better for touring.

One of their promising cruisers is part of their Grand American Touring range, the Harley-Davidson Road Glide . An old-school laid-back mile muncher often praised for being the best out there. The Street Glide also fits the bill for continent crunching and is a favorite from Harley's stable of cruisers. The interesting part about both these cruisers is the level of similarities. But despite sharing almost all components, there are a few cool differences that set the Road Glide apart from the Street Glide in 2023.

Similarities Between Harley's Road Glide And Street Glide

Harley-davidson road glide vs street glide specs.

The Road Glide and the Street Glide are essentially the same motorcycles and share a lot in common. There are, however, a few design and ergonomic differences that will appeal to different riders.

Both the Road Glide and Street Glide share the same platform. Powering both motorcycles is the 107 cu-in Milwaukee-Eight V-twin that generates 111 pound-feet of torque, enough to hit highway speeds in seconds. Furthermore, being a tourer, you get saddles, cruise control, a proprietary audio system with multiple speakers, and much more.

In terms of chassis, both share the same unit with exact dimensions. The Road Glide and Street Glide equally provide a smooth and responsive riding experience. Though largely tuned for long-distance travel rather than stop-and-go traffic, the Road Glide and Street Glide offer exceptional levels of rider and pillion comfort that are second to none.

What Are The Differences Between Road Glide And Street Glide?

Harley-davidson road glide vs street glide spec differences.

Let's dive into what differentiates the Road Glide and the Street Glide. For starters, the Road Glide gets a 'Shark-nose' fairing mounted on the frame , meaning the fairing does not move with the handlebar. The Street Glide, on the other hand, has a fork-mounted 'Batwing' fairing, which is a signature design cue seen on other Harley-Davidson motorcycles. This also means that the Street Glide's 'Batwing' moves with the change in direction of the handlebar.

Another noticeable difference lies in the weight. At 829 lbs, the Street Glide is slightly lighter than the 855-lb Road Glide . This, in turn, helps with slightly better acceleration owing to a slightly better power-to-weight ratio and a nimbler steering feel. The seat height is adjustable on both so all riders can enjoy these motorcycles.

But couple that with the different ground clearance, slightly different trail angle, and varying lean angle figures, and we have a clear winner when it comes to a more easy-to-ride Harley, i.e. the Street Glide. It has lesser ground clearance, hence making it accessible to riders of a wider height range. It is also ever so slightly more nimble on the corners as compared to the Road Glide.

Although both cost the same (more on that later), what you may want to factor in is which one fares better on a long, relaxing ride. Ultimately, both are marketed as cruisers, and as a potential buyer, it's important to know what suits best.

Road Glide Vs Street Glide: Which Harley-Davidson Is Better For Touring?

The Street Glide is, in fact, one of the best-selling Harley bikes since its inception in 2006. Widely regarded as the young yet responsible man's Harley, the Street Glide has received oodles of 'street' rep. As mentioned, the slightly shorter and lighter bike aims to be a bit more agile than its sibling. However, the Road Glide offers a lot more space between the handlebar and the seats, an important criterion if you're a tall rider. But the most significant detail that sets them apart is the Road Glide's ability to deflect wind.

While both are equipped with a fairing, the Road Glide's frame bolted setup helps reduce stress on the rider's arms. It's estimated that, at highway speeds, a weight of around 60 pounds is exerted on the fairing. If it's the Street Glide, the weight transfers to the handlebar since it's bolted to the fork. The Road Glide takes care of this by channeling the air resistance to the frame, dramatically reducing rider fatigue, an important trait when it comes to touring.

Sweeting the deal further for both these cool Harley Davidsons are a slew of optional Rider Safety Enhancement features . These include ABS, Electronic Linked Braking, Vehicle Hold Control, Tire Pressure Monitoring System, Cornering Enhanced Anti-Lock Brake System, Cornering Enhanced Traction Control System, and Cornering Drag-Torque Slip Control System. All of these wizardries come together to make the rider forget about the lousy dimensions of these land yachts of the motorcycling world.

So, there you have it. Both bikes are almost the same as they have the same engine, transmission, and suspension. Harley has also not distinguished between the two, even when it comes to cool technology features as well. Even though the storage space is the same, the Road Glide is just a slightly bigger and more spacious cruiser better suited for longer riding, and the Street Glide is a lighter and more practical option for cruising and daily riding as well.

Harley-Davidson Road Glide Vs Street Glide: Pricing

If you are in the market for one, you can expect a pretty high price tag for this premium cruiser. The 2023 Harley-Davidson Road Glide starts with an MSRP of $21,999 before options. The starting price for the Street Glide is exactly the same.

As for extras, Harley offers a set of upgrades, including their $1,100 Reflex Defensive Rider System (RDRS), which gets you cornering sensitive traction control, ABS, vehicle hold control (VHC), electronic braking, and tire pressure monitoring. Customers can upgrade to a premium radio worth $1,000, and Californian residents can get a $200 emissions pack, making them compliant with state laws.

This duo of Harley-Davidsons might seem to be on the expensive side, but it becomes an instant bang-for-buck when compared to a very similar duo from Indian Motorcycles. The Road Glide locks horns with the $28,499 Indian Challenger Limited . The Street Glide takes the fight to the $27,999 Indian Chieftain .

Harley-Davidson Road Glide Vs Street Glide: Here's Which One Is Better For Touring

The Biggest Harley-Davidson Motorcycles, Ranked By Weight

Spoiler alert: the heaviest Harley-Davidson weighs well over 1,000 pounds!

We've all heard the phrase "size doesn't matter." Whoever coined it probably wasn't talking about Harley-Davidson motorcycles, because when it comes to touring, size definitely matters. That's why all elements of an H-D touring bike are larger than life. Storage spaces? Large. Fenders? Large. Infotainment systems? Large. V-twin engines? Large. Consequently, Harley's touring class is home to some of the heaviest motorcycles ever manufactured.

Of course, all of that size and weight are there for two perfectly good reasons: comfort and long-distance touring. Just like how certain sport bikes are meant to be light for their nimble handling and high performance, these touring bikes pack on the pounds so that riders can enjoy the open highway with ease for hours on end. Because if there's one thing that ruins a good ride, it's when you experience pain when you really want to enjoy the journey.

Touring bikes are built on large steel frames, which means they are designed to take on more weight with greater distribution than standard cruiser motorcycles. More weight distribution means easier riding abilities for the rider. In addition, they come with saddlebags to carry additional gear, equipment, and anything else one could need when out on the road. Lest we forget, there's also the large fairing (either Batwing or Shark Nose) that houses an infotainment system and speakers, while protecting you from the wind and road debris. Now that you know what makes these bikes heavy, allow us to tell you some of the heaviest bikes in Harley-Davidson's portfolio today.

In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from Harley-Davidson . The list is a mix of 2022, 2023, and 2024 models, arranged in increasing order of weight.

The Most Affordable Harley-Davidson Motorcycle In 2024

10 2023 street glide special, running weight: 827 lbs.

The first motorcycle here is the highly popular Street Glide Special . This elevated version of the base Street Glide model comes with more color options, the choice of a blacked-out or chrome engine, additional safety features, and more performance in its Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine. When compared to the standard Street Glide, this motorcycle was much preferred by customers who were willing to pay extra. In fact, it was such a popular choice among Harley-Davidson enthusiasts that it would be a guaranteed sight at every concert, charity ride, and meetup. It is also the bike of choice for weekend rides and cross-country road trips. Because when it comes to touring in comfort and style, the Street Glide Special is a master of both.

Engine Specifications

Model highlights.

  • Batwing fairing
  • Turn-by-turn navigation
  • LED headlamp
  • Stretched saddlebags

9 2023 Road Glide ST

Running weight: 842 lbs.

For riders who demand performance and size , the Road Glide ST was the answer . Certainly not for the faint of heart, this motorcycle was slightly more powerful than the Road Glide Special, but not as flashy as the CVO Road Glide. The Road Glide ST was the model of choice for experienced riders who wanted to do more than just go out for a gentle cruise. It was intent on breaking out from the pack and conquering every highway and twisting back road. A performance bagger at its finest.

Performance Specifications

  • Brembo brakes
  • More cornering clearance
  • Low-profile fuel tank console

8 2023 Road Glide Special

Running weight: 853 lbs.

If there was one Harley-Davidson bagger with a dedicated fan base, it would be the Road Glide Special . Rivaling in popularity against its sibling (the Street Glide Special), this version of the Road Glide was in consistent demand even during the pandemic. While it too featured exclusive color schemes, blacked-out mechanicals, extended saddlebags, and a touchscreen infotainment system, the one thing that had customers hooked was its signature Shark Nose fairing. This allowed riders to cut through the wind at great highway speeds without any unpleasant buffeting or shakiness felt in the handlebars.

  • Optimal wind resistance
  • Two 5.25-inch stereo speakers
  • Cruise control
  • Cornering enhanced traction control system

10 Harley-Davidson Motorcycles With Great Resale Value

7 2022 cvo street glide, running weight: 866 lbs.

The next touring motorcycle packing on the pounds is the 2022 CVO Street Glide. Not only did this bike weigh slightly more than the Street Glide Special, but it also came with nearly every special feature right from the factory. That includes rare custom paint jobs, a remote lock on the key fob, an amped-up sound system, different seats, and unrivaled performance. The CVO Street Glide received a huge facelift in 2023 , with much of it being completely redesigned from front to back. But it lost a fair bit of weight in the process, so it's only fair we included the 2022 version of the CVO Street Glide.

  • Three showstopping color schemes (Envious Green Fade, Blue Steel, Hightail Yellow Pearl)
  • Boom! Box GTS infotainment system with Bluetooth compatibility
  • Four Rockford Fosgate speakers
  • Daymaker adaptive LED headlamp

6 2022 CVO Road Glide

Running weight: 893 lbs.

Just like the CVO Street Glide, the CVO Road Glide is another heavyweight H-D tourer . Weighing 40 pounds more than the Road Glide Special, this high-end version of the Road Glide packs a lot more gusto and flare that onlookers cannot ignore. A generous package of flashy upgrades, the mighty Milwaukee-Eight 117 engine, and a sexy Shark Nose fairing all make the CVO Road Glide every die-hard Road Glide rider's dream bike.

  • Heated Kahuna hand grips
  • Fugitive custom wheels
  • Corner safety enhancements
  • Daymaker Adaptive LED headlamps

5 2022 Ultra Limited

Running weight: 917 lbs.

We are about to move on from the heavyweights to the super heavyweights. The first bike that clocks in at over 900 pounds is the very popular Ultra Limited. Known among Harley riders as a "dresser", this touring motorcycle is designed with long-distance adventures in mind . With room to seat two people, comfort is a prime value when it comes to the Ultra Limited. With its reinforced touring frame and upgraded suspension, both the rider and passenger enjoy hours of relaxation on the highway with minimal fatigue. Some passengers have confessed to being so comfortable that they've fallen asleep mid-ride!

  • Electronic cruise control
  • Passenger seat with backrest
  • Tour-Pak provides additional storage

4 2021 Road Glide Limited

Running weight: 932 lbs.

For riders that want to go on a big cross-country road trip with extra amounts of comfort and storage, but are also fans of the Shark Nose fairing, the Road Glide Limited is the bike for them. Sharing the same comfort and storage capabilities as the Ultra Limited, this motorcycle can embark on long cruises while delivering impressive amounts of power. Its robust design provides a head-turning experience, just like its muscular stature. Coupled with a detailed infotainment system, turn-by-turn navigation, and four stereo speakers, a ride on this bike is never boring.

  • Reflex-lined Brembo brakes with ABS
  • Dual Daymaker LED headlamps
  • Heated handgrips

Every 2024 Harley-Davidson Model Ranked By Power

3 2024 freewheeler, running weight: 1,131 lbs.

The eye-catching Trikes are one family of Harley-Davidsons where weight is a defining characteristic. Weighing in well over 1,000 pounds, these three-wheeled motorcycles use their tremendous weight to their advantage by staying forever grounded in nearly every kind of riding environment. The Freewheeler is the foundation of the Trike class, providing comfort and assurance to the rider who no longer wants to worry about keeping it balanced. After all, with three wheels, the Freewheeler stands perfectly fine on its own.

  • Foot-controlled parking brake
  • Electric reverse gear
  • Two cubic feet of trunk space
  • Passenger seat with handle

2 2024 Road Glide 3

Running weight: 1,164 lbs.

This is the newest addition to the Trike family. It brings the appeal and performance of the Road Glide while being effortless to ride. Combining the dominant stance of the Freewheeler with the style and performance of the Shark Nose fairing, the 3 serves as the best of both worlds. As many seasoned Road Glide fans find themselves eventually transitioning over to Trikes, they can ride with confidence knowing that they won't have to sacrifice their model preference in favor of a third wheel. After all, it's no coincidence that the reveal of the Road Glide 3 happened at the same time Trikes suddenly became cool .

  • Shark Nose fairing with split stream vents
  • Optional gloss-black wheels and engine interior
  • Touchscreen infotainment system
  • Floorboards

1 2024 Tri Glide Ultra

Running weight: 1,237 lbs.

We've finally arrived at the heaviest of the super heavyweights. The one and only Tri Glide Ultra. This motorcycle is arguably the pinnacle of Harley-Davidson's three-wheeled offerings . By taking the long-distance touring capabilities of the Ultra Limited and the riding confidence of the Freewheeler, the Tri Glide Ultra is undoubtedly one of Harley's most loaded models today. This Trike is in it for the long haul, and it has everything (comfort, infotainment, and storage space) you will ever need.

  • Trunk with 4.4 cubic feet of storage
  • Tour-Pak with 2.4 cubic feet of storage
  • Upright riding position
  • Four 5.25-inch speakers
