Jackson Browne Takes Fans on a Deep Dive Journey Across 50 Years #REVIEW

by Paul Cashmere on November 30, 2023

At one point Jackson Browne commented how he “doesn’t think of himself as 75 and doesn’t think of his beard as grey” but that is what a lifetime of success will do to you. For many people in the room (including myself) who started the Jackson Browne journey with his first album in 1972, this show delivered a deep dive across the entire career.

Jackson Browne performed at MCA Melbourne. This was the make-up show for shows cancelled earlier this year when Jackson contracted covid after arriving in Australia. He could have curated the obvious setlist but for the true fan, there were a lot of deep dives throughout the night.

The first six Jackson Browne albums (from 1972 to 1980) were represented but so were the two most recent records ‘Downhill From Everywhere, 2021) and ‘Standing In The Breach, 2014). For Browne, commentary is the lost important part of the art of his songwriting. There is a message in every song. ‘Downhill from Everywhere’ speaks to a world moving backwards. ‘Until Justice Is Real’ also speaks to today with those potent opening words, “Ain’t on your T.V., ain’t on your phone, You want the truth you got to find it on your own.”

It is hard to believe it has just gone 20 years since the passing of Warren Zevon. I’ve got an bootleg of Jackson from the 70s doing Warren’s ‘Werewolves of London’. They were close friends and that friendship lives on with Jackson performing two of Warren’s songs ‘Don’t Let Us Get Sick’ and ‘The Indifference of Heaven’.

‘Call It A Loan’ from the 1980 ‘Hold On’ album was an unexpected treat. The ‘Hold Out’ album was represented three times, with ‘Boulevard’ and ‘That Girl Could Sing’.

That second album ‘For Everyman’ received great exposure with the title track, the stunning ‘These Days’ (written by Jackson when he was 16 years old) and the rock ‘Redneck Friend’. (Fun Fact: Elton John played piano on Jackson’s 1973 recording under the name Rockaday Johnnie). Jackson went overtime at this show so the final song ‘Take It Easy’, the song Jackson co-wrote for Eagles, had to be dropped because of the MCA curfew.

Those first six Jackson Browne albums are must have classics for everyone’s collection. I doubt any true fan walked away disappointed from this show.

‘What’s more personal than your political belief?’ ... Jackson Browne

Jackson Browne: ‘I think desire is the last domino to fall’

The singer-songwriter discusses his new album and how his age and the current political landscape has shifted his musical direction

I n the nearly seven years leading up to Jackson Browne’s new album, Downhill from Everywhere, he entered a new decade of life (his 70s), became a grandfather and saw fresh waves of activists, from the MeToo movement to Black Lives Matter, replace the ones that had inspired him in the 60s and 70s. At the same time, many of his new songs center on a theme most people associate with the bloom of youth: desire. “I think desire is the last domino to fall,” Browne said in a phone interview from his LA home. “Desire is eternal, like hope. It’s just your capacity to act on it that changes,” he added with a dark laugh.

It’s that capacity that Browne ponders and challenges throughout the album, from its restless opening track, Still Looking for Something, to its finale, Song for Barcelona, which presents that Spanish city’s vibrancy as its own avenue for renewal. With characteristic eloquence and reach, Browne addresses desire in all its forms, whether that be for a romantic connection, a sense of purpose, a political goal or simply to experience something new.

Despite the scope of his yearning, Browne kept his perspective tight by framing everything from a well-seasoned point of view. “I’m old, you know,” said the 72-year-old songwriter. “It’s one of the undeniable facts of this life that it doesn’t last forever. So, I think my questions now have more to do with, ‘what can be accomplished in the time I have left?’ And, ‘what are we here for in the first place?’”

Such philosophical questions have served as both a spur and a muse for Browne ever since he first garnered attention as a teenage poet prodigy in the late 60s, when he wrote such improbably heavy songs as These Days. Not that he finds the gravity of such songs unlikely. “Kids have a very intense emotional life,” he said. “They just don’t get credit for it.”

He believes some of his flair for capturing grave emotions comes from listening to a lot of older blues and folk musicians from a young age. “When you sing an old song, you take on that feeling,” he said. “Also, my mother had this great collection of blues lyrics that treated them like an anthology of poems. That stuff hit me like a thunderbolt. ‘Man, this is the stuff!’ I thought. It’s a distillation of the human spirit.”

The political side of older folk songs inspired him to become his own kind of musical activist. In that spirit, the new album continues Browne’s common pattern of balancing politically minded pieces with personal ones. Still, he pushes back against the assumption that there’s a clear separation between the two. “What’s more personal than your political belief?” he said. “It’s highly personal.”

At the same time, he’s well aware that many people find songs with a political message preachy and pedantic. For him, such criticisms go with the territory. “You try not to preach,” he said. “But the problem is, if you’re too oblique, no one knows what the hell you’re talking about.”

He believes the resistance by some listeners to political music comes from a kind of guilt. “They can feel like they’re being lectured to simply because they don’t know much about the subject,” he said. “And they get the feeling they should know more.”

He has experienced such awkwardness first-hand while performing political songs he has written like Lives in the Balance. “I could tell people were getting restless,” he said, “so, I said to the audience, ‘I can see that I’m making some of you uncomfortable, but I feel like maybe that’s what I should do.’”

Jackson Browne

For the new album, Browne wrote a song called Until Justice is Real, whose title echoes the rallying cry of the activist group Color of Change. Their stated mission is “to create a more human and less hostile world for Black people in America”. Another song on the album, The Dreamer, deals with the vexing issues surrounding Mexican immigration to the US. Such messages arrive at an opportune time. In the last few years, young people have become more politically involved than at any time since Browne was young. “For a long time, it didn’t seem like youth engaged in anything like this,” the songwriter said. “Maybe it’s that now the problems are so severe, they can’t be ignored.”

While the return to activism may stir Browne, the rise of Donald Trump, and what that has revealed, has shaken his deepest assumptions about both politics and human nature. “Like a lot of people, I fundamentally believed that we were on a gradual ascent towards solving the problems that we have had all along, having to do with inclusion and opportunity and justice,” he said. “I thought that things were getting better. Evidently, I was wrong. We can’t pretend any more than we don’t have the same divisions in this country that we’ve had since the civil war.”

But if Browne’s world view has darkened, his own life seems to be on the upswing. He says he’s now more excited about making music than he has been in years, buoyed by his band, who contributed more to the songwriting process than usual for the new album. More, the lyrics to several new songs, including Human Touch and Minutes to Downtown, capture a man who, late in life, has found a new romantic involvement. In the latter song, he sings, “I didn’t think I would ever feel this way again/no, not with a story this long and close to the end.”

Along the way, the song’s narrator offers a key detail, referring to “the years I’ve seen that fell between my birth date and yours”, clearly speaking to a younger lover. When asked about the lines, Browne takes a long pause. “I hate to disclose stuff about the personal part of the song because songs are about the listener,” he said. But, “in this case, I’m telling the truth about my own situation.”

Jackson Browne and Kevin Smith at Groove Masters

He wouldn’t be more specific but he stressed that, to him, “the more telling part of the lyric is the line about ‘a river changing course’. I actually looked it up and that can happen. Rivers do change course, but it’s a long process. I think my life has changed course. I’ve taken on a commitment to personal growth. And it’s late,” he added.

Browne deals with such late-breaking quests in a humorous way in the album’s single, My Cleveland Heart, which finds him travelling to the famous Cleveland Clinic to have an artificial heart transplant. In the song, he says of that miraculous device, “they’re made to take a bashing / and never lose their passion. They never break and they don’t ache,” he sings. “They just plug in and shine.”

“It’s the whole idea of eliminating human frailty,” he said. “Wouldn’t that be great? Automatic happiness!”

In the video for the song – which features songwriter Phoebe Bridges playing a nurse – Browne once again underscores his age by letting his hair go grey. “I’m as vain as the next person,” he said. “But what are you going to do? To me, when I see an old guy with a dye job it interferes with my enjoyment of the person’s work. If you’re talking about what’s really going on in a life, you can’t be wearing a disguise.”

Browne’s sustained quest to be frank led him to close the album with Song for Barcelona, which imagines a life for him beyond music, made possible by a city he has long loved. “The song is about coming to terms with mortality and life’s temporal changes,” he said. Barcelona “is a place I could imagine myself going to live at some point. I would be like one of those little old people you encounter on the street – another person in the crowd.”

Jackson Browne Announces ‘Evening With’ Tour Dates for September

By Claire Shaffer

Claire Shaffer

Jackson Browne has announced his Evening With tour, featuring Browne backed by his full band. The tour will be in support of his upcoming album  Downhill From Everywhere , originally scheduled for last fall but delayed due to the pandemic; the album will now be out July 23rd via Inside Recordings.

Kicking off with a standalone show in Mashantucket, Connecticut, on August 8th, the Evening With tour will resume on September 5th at the Santa Barbara Bowl, and will run through September 20th with a final show at the Kiva Auditorium in Albuquerque, Mexico. The tour will fall in between Browne’s concert dates with James Taylor on his own tour , which will run through July and August, pause in September, and resume in October. See the latest tickets here .

Last month, Browne released the  Downhill From Everywhere single “My Cleveland Heart.” The music video , directed by Alissa Torvinen Kouame, features a cameo from Phoebe Bridgers.

“I thought it was really appropriate to take out my worn-out, useless heart and hand it to Phoebe,” Browne told  Rolling Stone  of the gesture. “Who better to hand [it] to than somebody young, strong, and possibly as cynical as me?”

“My Cleveland Heart” follows the singles “ A Little Soon to Say ” and “ Downhill From Everywhere. ”

A product of the infamous 60’s Greenwich Village scene where he moved as a young teenager, Jackson Browne has matured into a prolific singer-songwriter who has sold over 18 million albums in America.

Jackson was born in Germany in 1948 before moving to California where he began folk singing in local clubs. As a teen he moved to New York and became a part of the Greenwich Village scene, befriending the likes of Tim Buckley and Nico. Nico and Jackson became romantically and musically involved resulting in Jackson contributing heavily to her debut album ‘Chelsea Girl’. Although classic songs like ‘These Days’ were Jackson’s compositions he wouldn’t record his own versions till years later.

Under the management of David Geffen, Jackson signed to Asylum Records and released his self-titled debut album in 1971. Singles like ‘Doctor My Eyes’ and ‘Rock Me On The Water’ were popular and a tour with Joni Mitchell helped to further promote the album. His next albums ‘For Everyman’ and ‘Late for the Sky’ received critical and commercial acclaim (the latter peaking at 14 in the album charts) and helped to solidify his sound, becoming known for his memorable melodies and personal lyrics.

As his career continued, his music to remained popular and his contributions to music were acknowledged when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. He also became known as a vocal activist on environmental issues (such as nuclear power and living more ‘greenly’) and has always contributed to charitable causes throughout his career.

Live reviews

Great show tonight at The Landmark in Syracuse. Paul Dieter, Jackson's sound guy, had some trouble dialing it in and the sound was a little harsh starting out, but settled right down. Jackson is so enthusiastic about having both Val and Greg on the same tour and practically oozes his appreciation. On many songs they both do solos. If I never have to hear The Pretender, Runnin' On Empty, or Take It Easy (saved by the segue into Our Lady Of The Well) , it would be too soon. But the crowd loves them and they always have prominent places in the set. He was very inclusive tonight and so was open to crowd suggestions. A kick ass version of Zevon's Lawyers Guns and Money and spur of the moment insertions of Late For The Sky; Shape of A Heart; Looking East; Red Neck Friend. On this tour he has his back up singers (Alethea Mills and Chavonne Stewart) add their faith based fourth verse to Lives In The Balance. Very generous two and a half hour show with a little intermission for the old guys and their prostates and leaky bladders. Not the audience, the talent.

While the two sets included Somebody's Baby, I miss not having Too Many Angels, I Am A Patriot, Skies Blue and Black, I'll Do Anything, and Barricades of Heaven. As Don Henley pointed out in talking about his rendition of These Days on the double tribute cd produced by the late Jimmy LaFave, Jackson was fucking sixteen when he wrote that! And though he's mistakenly updated the lyrics in concert, it highlights his character. A young boy with an old soul.

While Barb continues to declare Dawes her favorite band, let's not forget it's also known as The Jackson Browne, Jr. Band. We were listening to the cd Nothing Is Wrong on the way down and the crowd pleaser is the track Fire Away. It has Jackson on one of the tags in the end. He sings the low part:)

We've seen Jackson at each of his last three performances at Sunset Center and, quite frankly, this was far and away the best show! We've seen him on several other occasions earlier in his career and last nights show stacks up against any of them. The entire band looked like they were having fun and enjoying themselves. Jackson was communicative and funny - although at one point he made the comment that he was trying to talk less during the show so they could play more music. And they did!!!!! The show was 3 hours and 15 minutes with one 15 minute break.

Jackson's voice sounded much stronger than the last time we saw him. It probably helped that he had a group of players and vocalists behind him to help him along but, even when it was just him, he sounded really, really great!

We got to hear him play some different songs; once we hadn't heard in a while or had never heard performed before. That was fun and I think Jackson enjoyed the change as well.

Maybe not for the reason we might default to but our favorites of the night were his new song with Leslie Mendelson called Human Touch and I am a Patriot. Leslie's voice is sooooo very great and she sounds perfect with Jackson on this song. The song itself is amazing!

I AM A PATRIOT was one we had not heard him perform previously. He did it as the first encore and the energy in the performance and in the room was electric. The passion of the song was easily evident!

We also really enjoyed his performance of Walls and Doors. First, the song is so well done and moving. More importantly, Jackson seemed to truly love singing it and did an amazing job.

I am biased I know but the man created the songbook of my life and likely many others. It is just so very great to see him still enjoying himself and sounding so very great!

I was 9 yrs old the first time i saw Jackson Browne.Im 63 now.Since then, Ive seen him 200 more times.Ive seen him now into his 70's. To say I appreciate him for the gift he truly is,would be an understatement. He is what makes people try their best to be better humanbeings, better stewards of our planet and what it means to help others ,as best u can ,while still staying true to yourself. He makes the world a better place. He is gracious and kind ,its so strickingly clear how vital, he still is. While just a man , he is a testament to all things fine and good.I have never tired of him or what he has to say ,nor will i ever, i suppose. Im grateful and thankful and humbled to have been so blessed to experience him thru my entire life. On Sept 10th 2021 ,i saw him up close and personal at the OXBOW RIVER STAGE. I paid a small fortune for the opportunity.I would do it all over again. The man was playing like a young kid and having some serious fun. Everything about the night was magical ,even the moon was in attendance. The weather so mild , it kissed your skin. His new album"Downhill from Everywhere ",is a must buy. Its just incredible. Every song on it is a masterpiece in its own right. And the more you listen, the more you hear and it transports you straight into now and how critical everything hes saying is. Hes generously collabrating with younger artists and its this openness, thats enchanting and poignant and ringing true ,resonating an urgency in his music. He has a natural gift,a timing that is uncanny. These are just some of the reasons he continually has held my attention,my entire life. BRAVO, BRAVO ,BRAVO. VAYA CON DIOS.

Another certified rock Legend, Jackson Browne practically invented a totally new sound of Rock music in the 1970’s. It helped define a part of the country and the time period. The shows was packed full and in a very large outdoor arena.

Most of the crowd was older but there were some younger people here and there. He had a great back up band. He opened the show with his smash hit “Runnin on Empty”. He played his other hit songs like “Boulevard” and “Somebody’s Baby”. One of the best songs was when he did the radio favorite “Doctor my Eyes” and it really brought the house down. He closed with “The Pretender” and the song “Stay” which is always the perfect show to end a concert on.

He really looked good and his voice sounded great. He did not show or sound his age. He played for almost 2 hours and was really good with interacting with the crowd. He also told a lot of good and funny stories about his life as a rock and roll legend. Everyone was really pleased with the performance and I would see him again if he tours again. It is a rare treat to get to see someone with so many hit songs.

IN YOUR LIVING ROOM

We all sat while you entertained for hours, reliving the 70's and some tunes. It reminded us of the incredible lyricist Jackson is. Smart move in having Sean and Sara on tour. In themselves they are very accomplished musicians, blending in so well...never a note off beat.

Jackson's covers of Little Feat, Warren Zevon , Glenn Frey and Leonard Cohen brought us to our feet.It is interesting when a performer plays their favorite song, and that an audience member suggested this.

It indicated to me there was a very short set list, and the improv-like comraderie between performer and those listening was so comfortable it did, as Jackson refereed, to be like in his living room.

Thank you for your compliment on us being polite..Only because we respect the quiet you and your musicians needed to collaberate.

The man hasn't lost his voice..The clarity of every word, note and suitable guitar to accompany every song kept the audience wanting more. Thank You. Thank You..

Jackson Browne performed many beautiful songs including his most well known songs like 'The Pretender". The venue at All Saints Church in Pasadena last Friday 11/16/18. Vocalists Alethea Mills and Chavonne Stewart organized the benefit concert 'Exposure' a fundraiser to support underserved children. Jackson was joking he better watch his language lol, because he was performing in a church, ;) We had a wonderful time. The cathedral had beautiful arches and intricate carved wood moldings with giant very beautiful stained glass windows. Reminds me of a quoat where the author compares people like stained glass windows: "like stained glass windows, we sparkle and shine in the sun,but when darkness sets in true beauty is only revealed if a light is within" ~ Elizabeth Kubler-Ross. That night I think the light was shining all the way to heaven.~ Suzie McDonald

I thought it was an excellent show. I had never seen him before, but always loved his music. he did not disappoint. He played 25 songs! many of these were classic hits, but just as many were older songs that only die hards would know and love. Finally, he also played a number of newer songs....great balance.

I found him to very engaging, talking to the crowd throughout the show and seemed very genuine and personable. One point that stood out was during "A Shape in the Heart," he forgot where he was and had to go back. in fact, he still couldn't pull it together, right away, so he simply apologized, laughed at himself, while the band played on, then found his way. it was a wonderfully personal and unrehearsed moment.

At 70 years old - his voice is still strong. I would definitely encourage people to see him!

Jackson describes his current band as an "embarrassment of riches", which is definitely not an embarrassment for his fans! These girls (Alethia Mills, Chavonne Stewart) and guys (Greg Leitz, Mauricio Lewak, Val McCallum, Jeffrey Young, Bob Glaub) are the perfect combination to keep Jackson's music alive and fresh. The setlist was a mix of his famous folk songs, activist message songs, and fan favorites (You Love the Thunder, The Dreamer, The Pretender, Somebody's Baby). The band looked like it was having fun, with Greg snapping some pics with the sunset, and the girls laughing at the goofy couple in the front row. I have seen JB over 25 times since 1978, all over the country,so it is thrilling for me to see that his shows are selling out each time and he and the band are delivering amazing shows night after night.

Saw him last night at Beacon with Luscious... Was very impressed with the warm up band as I had not heard of them.... will investigate them more

Browne sounded great and did a nice job on stage presence... the song selection left a little to be desired.... I expect new songs and some covers but would have preferred more of his classics.... Perhaps it was being in NY but he added some "political" songs if not commentary at the expense of some classics that were apparently played in the set list from other venues... Missed hearing, late for the sky, for a dancer and others for the political leaning ones....

All in all was good but disappointed in song selection but was to be expected with Browne's political leanings.. wish they would keep that to themselves and perform

The Royal Albert Hall has seen and will continue to host many great artists and performers. Jackson Browne and his incredibly talented band did justice to this iconic venue with a selection of his greatest songs. As he said, amidst shouts for tunes from all stages of his career, he had a set list but he was prepared to change it somewhat and duly delivered many of the requested songs. He even took the 'p' out of himself by playing a Randy Newman song 'A Piece of the Pie' that gently satires his political protests; 'no one gives a sh-t but Jackson Browne'! Jacksons voice was incredible, as warm textured and full as ever. His lyrics and melodies are timeless. Long may he tour and keep coming back to the UK!

Springsteen archives & center for american music announces 2024 honorees.

February 20, 2024

The Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music has announced the honorees of its second annual American Music Honors event, to be held Wednesday, April 24 on the campus of Monmouth University in West Long Branch, N.J.

Jackson Browne

The 2024 honorees are: John Mellencamp, who together with Willie Nelson and Neil Young, created Farm Aid in 1985. The social activism reflected in Mellencamp’s songs helped catalyze Farm Aid, the organization that has addressed the struggle of American family farmers that continues to this day; Jackson Browne, a long-time social justice, environmental and educational activist who has supported everything from anti-nuclear alternative energy resources to political freedom in Central America; Mavis Staples, who in the 1960’s was on the frontlines of the civil rights movement and continues to use her music to support racial equality in America; Dion DiMucci, who’s landmark recording of “Abraham, Martin and John” became an activist anthem in the late 1960’s and beyond.

“The Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music is proud to honor these musically, culturally, and politically important artists,” said Robert Santelli, Founding Executive Director of the Springsteen Archives. “All four artists—John Mellencamp, Jackson Browne, Mavis Staples, and Dion—have contributed mightily to the American music canon and have demonstrated how the power of song can act as an agent for positive change in our country.”

American Music Honors will take place in Monmouth University’s Pollak Theatre. Stevie Van Zandt’s Disciples of Soul will serve as the event’s house band. Award presenters include Bruce Springsteen and Jon Landau and 2023 American Music Honors recipients Van Zandt and Darlene Love.

Tickets for the event will go on sale to the public on Tuesday, March 23. Ticket information is available on the Archives’ website springsteenarchives.org .

Last Ward by Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre

Friday, November 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Reynolds Industries Theater Saturday, November 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Reynolds Industries Theater

Hailed as “an uncommonly deft combination of dance and verbal theater” in a New York Times Critics’ Pick review, Last Ward follows one man’s journey towards death in a hospital room. Surrounded by the sterile mechanisms of modern medicine, the patient reflects on his life, relationships and connection to place, as the ritual of doctor visits and family calls transform into a surreal landscape of tragedy and humor. Performed in Arabic with English subtitles, Last Ward was written and directed by Amir Nizar Zuabi with choreography and music by Samar Haddad King.

These two performances follow a week-long residency with the company at Duke University.

Adrianne Lenker with special guest Suzanne Vallie

Friday, November 22 at 8:00 p.m. in Page Auditorium

Chamber Arts Series:

Now in its 79th year, this popular series features eight concerts by world-renowned small ensembles selected by the Chamber Arts Society of Durham for the Duke Arts Presents season. The season opens with the acclaimed Tesla Quartet in their Duke debut. The innovative piano-percussion Vesna Duo follows with their “Roots and Rhizomes” program, which ends with their energetic take on Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring.” Paris-based Modigliani Quartet returns to Duke in October with a wide-ranging program of works by Weber, Ravel and Beethoven. The semester ends with a “Beethoven Journey” program by Chamber Arts Series favorites David Finckel and Wu Han , a cello-piano duo who are leading figures in the American classical music scene.

After a brief winter break, concerts resume in March with the acclaimed young Goldmund Quartet making their Duke debut. UK luminaries the Elias String Quartet then performs a program of wrought, emotional string quartets by siblings Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn flanking “Entr’acte,” a 2011 piece by North Carolina-native Caroline Shaw. The trailblazing Zodiac Trio brings an exciting program of works by American composers performed in their unusual instrumentation of clarinet, violin and piano. Finally, the globally acclaimed Jerusalem Quartet returns to Duke Arts to close the season with works by Mozart, Shostakovich and Brahms.

Piano Recital Series:

Each year, the piano recital series showcases the talents of four world-leading pianists in Baldwin Auditorium. This year’s series begins with German pianist and famed Bach interpreter Schanghajegh Nosrati in her Duke debut. Next, Korean pianist Joyce Yang returns to Duke for the first time in twelve years; since her last visit, she has blossomed from wünderkind into a mature and sensitive artist at the forefront of her craft. The third concert brings renowned American pianist Michelle Cann with “The Women of Chicago’s Black Renaissance,” a program that pairs Cann’s virtuosic playing with spoken commentary about the fascinating lives of its featured artists. The series closes with the Mexican piano prodigy Daniela Liebman , who at age twenty-one has already performed with over thirty orchestras on four continents.

1. Schaghajegh Nosrati on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. 2. Joyce Yang on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. 3. Michelle Cann on Friday, February 21, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. 4. Daniela Liebman on Sunday, March 30, 2025, at 7:00 p.m.

Vocal Ensemble Series:

The Vocal Ensemble Series from Duke Arts Presents showcases the highest level of vocal talent from across the globe. The distinguished vocal ensembles in this year’s four-concert series illustrate the vast variety and dynamism of the choral artform.

The series begins with two leading British vocal ensembles.  Tenebrae  is scheduled to provide a moment of togetherness in Duke Chapel immediately following the 2024 general election. In December, a cappella octet  VOCES8  will visit Baldwin Auditorium to perform “Winter Tales,” a program of holiday music spanning centuries, from medieval carols to “Let it Snow.” Over MLK weekend, American chamber choir  Tonality  performs “America Will Be,” a dynamic program that conjures a patriotic future of the United States for all people. And finally, German boys’ choir  Thomanerchor Leipzig , founded in 1212, will close the season in Duke Chapel with a wide range of works by more than ten composers, including their most famous cantor, Johann Sebastian Bach.
