Amazing. He has the stage presence of a superstar and gives 100% to every show. See him 4 times now, and would pay double to see him again. Lunice is an amazing artist. He can knock the cold feet out of anyone and light the place up. If you get a chance to see him. You HAVE TO ATTEND.

As a musician, I absolutely love the experience of being in an audience totally swept of their feet by someone’s music, whatever the genre. I love the passion that it draws from people, and I love it when it makes people dance. This act, Lunice is one of those EDM artists that without fail; will manages to fill out rooms on his tours and make people dance. Tonight, that is what it is all about for this artist.

This guy has got some pretty cool accolades to his name too, having featured on some of BBC Radio 1’s shows on the dance music shows, and having collaborated with Azealia Banks on the song “212”, for which her featured in the video. He really sets it off this evening with a single called “Higher Ground” that gets this audience jumping with their hands in the air, singing along. He subtly works in “212”, which creates a huge hysteria in this audience inspiring shouting along with the chorus.

• Lunice, along with his TNGHT collaborator Hudson Mohawke, is one of the most quietly influential people on the sound of EDM and rap music. In the world of EDM-inspired "trap,"whole careers have been launched off the heaving, pneumatic sound popularised by the Canadian artist and his Scottish production partner. On his own, Lunice makes music that is even wackier, loaded with head-turning sound effects and sudden halts. It's a jerky, but ultimately funky, groove exemplified by his infamous dancing behind the decks. OPEN , his latest album, is a brief and explosive LP with an improvised, let's-see-what-happens flair. It's comfortingly familiar in its Whac-A-Mole cartoonishness, but it also pushes the envelope of hip-hop with inspired guest appearances. OPEN avoids the sometimes tricky pitfalls of the hip-hop producer album format, where voices and perspectives collide and quality control is nonexistent. By making the rap songs about as strange as they can possibly get, Lunice makes sure that OPEN is all about him. The record is split between Lunice instrumentals and MC'd rap songs. The beginning is something of a feint. "Last Time," with rapper Zach Zoya, is a sweet ocarina instrumental that wraps around an R&B vocal like snug skinny jeans. "Winnebago" pits electro duo DAGR against Lunice's outsized and brash kick drums, and eventually twists the singer's voice into a demonic subterranean pitch. On "Walk," hyperpop rapper Cali Cartier whines an absurd hook—"wa-wa-wa-waaaa"—that would be grating if it weren't so funny. The album's possibilities feel endless. Most impressive is the title track, where Yuki Dreams Again's creamy vocals veer between crooning verses (atop some of Lunice's most gentle production) and unhinged choruses that stretch a screaming noise into uncanny syllables. The push-and-pull exemplifies the distinctive stop-start motion of Lunice's trap beats, placing it in a pop context instead. Still, for the rest of the LP, Lunice sticks to business as usual, or whatever that means for him. "Red Congo" is dangerously chaotic, while "Life Happening," which would please fans of horsegiirL with its donk-ish kicks, has a breakdown that hints at a pop hook that never comes. Just when you think Lunice is giving you something to grasp onto, he snatches it away. Any sense of normalcy is shattered by the return of Cali Cartier on the album's final track, "No Commas." Employing a voice that makes Playboi Carti's infamous baby voice seem well-adjusted, Lunice lays down a track so confusing, so offensive that it's hard to listen without a visceral reaction. (The detuned lullaby chimes and kick-in-the-door bass drums only add to the confusion.) This is the Lunice we know and love—the one that toys with absurd drops, zany effects and odd vocals. The music sounds so silly that it's easy to think it's a joke. But this is precisely why, for over a decade now, Lunice's forward-thinking hip-hop has been so alluring—what can sound silly at first becomes normal disarmingly fast. Once again, Lunice is ahead of the pack.

CCCLX , the debut album from Montreal producer Lunice Fermin Pierre II, comes with a dramatic conceit: It is meant to be the score for a speculative theater piece. Reportedly inspired by the opera Madame Butterfly , Lunice —who is one-half of the trap duo TNGHT , with Hudson Mohawke —splits the album into four-acts, with curtain calls, costume changes, and fade outs all built into the structure. But what would this imaginary visual piece look or feel like? Perhaps like a stadium: Lunice has described his own music as “blockbuster” commercial rap, the kind of hip-hop production that would and could only sound good in a gigantic space. The aspirations of CCCLX define themselves along these lines. While a good stadium show can inspire bacchanalian reverie and awe (Kanye on the floating stage, for example), it can also feel bloated and puzzling (Cirque du Soleil as soundtracked by M83). The outsized melodrama of CCCLX puts the whole enterprise in the latter category.

This is partly due to Lunice’s distinct lack of subtlety in his production work. With TNGHT, he made trap music hooked up to an IV of Monster energy drink, and his solo work essentially painted him as Lex Luger with an Adderall prescription. Five years ago, when he started working on CCCLX , the sound of sleek, bass-heavy hip-hop was in vogue (Kanye’s Cruel Summer album with his G.O.O.D. Music crew being the apex of the sound). That sound has not aged well and is especially retrograde on CCCLX . From the persistent motif of gaudy opera vocal samples to the echoing kick drums that populate each song, there are few moments on CCCLX that avoid the temptation of chasing a sugar high.

The instrumental tracks, in particular, are where Lunice is especially prone to indulging more ham-fisted tendencies. The worst of these is “CCCLX( Intermission)” with its sour piano line and garish percussion, resembling a trap remix of The Godfather theme. Most of the album, though, is devoted to a series of vocal collaborations, which are a mixed-bag. The largely unknown Canadian MC CJ Flemings gets the most shine on CCCLX , and his generic rapping is like set-dressing on top of Lunice’s ornate instrumentals. His wooden flow and his rather uninspired lyricism (“This isn’t for the year or a decade/This is for the century,” he raps on “CCCLX (Curtain)”) can really take away from the dramatic experience Lunice is trying to create. There are a few bright spots: “Distrust,” with Denzel Curry is perfectly suited to the Florida rapper’s preference for high-powered goth-rap, and “Drop Down” with SOPHIE and LE1F is a pleasingly bawdy piece of bubblegum trap.

The one saving grace that runs throughout the album is Lunice’s devotion to high-production value: Every song here sounds expensive, and would play exquisitely on enormous sound systems. But that imbalance, between the level of production and substance, means all the SFX and sonic wizardry of CCCLX can feel a little brainless. If this is music for a blockbuster work, it’s more Michael Bay than Stanley Kubrick.
