Accommodation options, muddy duck – longreach’s newest park, set to open 2022.
Longreach locals, the Seccombes, consider themselves ‘a big Thomson River family’.
In fact, Louise and Andrew feel this Longreach treasure is underutilised. Their passion for skiing and swimming inspired their soon-to-open Muddy Duck Tourist Park . Set on 15 hectares, a few minutes’ drive from Longreach town centre, Muddy Duck will offer large grassy drive-through sites close to the water in the coming months.
“Our vision is to utilise the river, so we have kayaks available to hire,” explains Louise.
A space for all travellers
Longreach is popular with grey nomads who come for the Qantas Museum and the Stockman Hall of Fame.
“We’re looking to create a space for all kinds of travellers–where guests can enjoy the water, ride, explore the park or sit back and enjoy the surrounds.”
Indeed, Louise believes their new venture will show visitors another side to Longreach encouraging them to stay a bit longer or return–with a glorious natural lagoon filled with lilies providing a haven for bird species and a base to explore.
“I am not a twitcher but a friend of mine pointed out numerous birds that birdwatchers will find appealing.”
In town, a new cafe is opening. And there’s been significant investment in the Qantas Museum as well.
Stage 1 progressing well
The campsites are set high, with a grassy communal area by the river with the long-term vision for a kiosk. But right now, Louise and Andrew are focussing on their first guests, anticipated in the coming months.
“We have almost finished Stage 1, with about 40 powered sites, which are large, drive-through sites separated with garden beds,” Louise explains. There’s room for unpowered camping as well.
Weather pending, they’re days away from installing temporary amenities, which will offer family ensuites. Work on the Stage 1 camp kitchen will follow shortly thereafter.
“We wanted to offer family ensuite in the amenities; somewhere where families can wash up together!”
Learning from experience
Indeed, Louise, Andrew and their three boys have learned a lot about family in a camper trailer and up to Cape York.
“We’re always looking at what’s working in other parks.
“A few years ago, we did a trip up to Kununurra with an 18-month-old baby in a camper trailer! That was a learning experience.”
What’s in store
Down the track, Louise and Andrew plan to calve bushwalking trails through the natural landscapes and put in two playgrounds with one beside the proposed kiosk.
“We would also like to get some canoes, put together skiing packages and also SUP and paddle boats for kids, there’s definitely an opportunity for more.”

This would be the worst accommodation that I have ever stayed in. We stayed in a cabin that was not fit for human habitation - how they get away with it beats me. There was a sign in the cabin saying that animals were not allowed. The RSPCA would have words to say if you kept an animal in conditions like that. Go somewhere else.
- Cleanliness
We stayed in an on-site cabin. This wasn't a pleasant experience. The cabin is old and very run down. The third bed was a bunk bed which was quite inaccessible and vinyl covered, making the sheets hard to contain. Hole in the floor of the shower. All in all very ordinary.
A word of advice: do not stay here! Two sites become three. Health and safety is non-existent. A newcomer was directed by staff and his car was scraped into a tow bar. Could go on. Never, ever go there.
- Sleep Quality
Six of us stayed in the house that is part of the caravan park, two more stayed in a cabin. No one was delighted, but the accommodation was comparatively cheap and we had a place where the whole group could gather. We were there on some VERY cold nights, but extra blankets were readily available, and when we complained about the shower, it was fixed very quickly. We were there at a time when many Australians were travelling in our own country because COVID restrictions forbade us our overseas holidays. The caravan park owners tried to help everyone, so they had vans parked in the street and on the front lawn of the house where we were staying. The owner collected us at the station, which was very helpful. We wouldn't be rushing back to this place, though.
Staying here has been the Low Light of our trip. Vans packed in like Sardines, Power Cords and Hoses running everywhere and ammenities that need urgent attention. On top of that it has been the most expensive site we have paid for. Even Vans parked in the Street. Surely this must break so many regulations . Not to mention if there was an emergency here, people would struggle to get out. If we had not already paid for this and we had other options, we would have just left. Never agsin
Outback Towns and Drives
Find a town, find a drive itinerary, about isisford.
There’s something about Isisford and the Outer Barcoo. It’s been the inspiration for many an Australian poet including Banjo Paterson. The magnificent two storey Clancy’s Overflow Hotel was said to have been re-named in honour of Banjo’s iconic poem. Not to mention the fossil discoveries! Check out the Outer Barcoo Interpretation Centre and learn about the discovery of Australian Oldest modern Crocodile.
It’s hard to miss the Outback’s biggest Yellow Belly glistening in the sunlight as you arrive into town. It measures 12 metres long and stands a lofty five metres high. Look closely and you’ll discover windmill parts, corrugated iron and thousands of pop rivets gathered from surrounding properties. This impressive metal art sculpture is a celebration of the Yellow Belly Fishing Competition held annually on the last weekend of July. The event is held at Oma Waterhole and it draws masses of keen anglers from across the country.
Oma Waterhole is one of many permanent waterholes fed by the much celebrated Barcoo River. It’s a favourite recreation spot for lovers of camping, fishing and most things water related. There’s even a boat ramp. Overnight campers appreciate access to the hot showers and toilet facilities. Find it on the Isisford Yaraka River Road, just 16 km from Isisford.
The Barcoo Weir another popular camping site is just short stroll from Isisford and all of the amenities. It is also a great place to wander the many bush walking tracks, take photographs of the bird life or picnic on by the weir.
It’s easy to picture life in more gentler times as you explore the historic buildings that line Isisford ‘s main street, check out the displays in the park or if you are interested in stories of how places came to be by default, then plan a visit to Whitman’s Museum.
The town has many great facilities including, a Cafe, Store, Hotel, Caravan Park, Swimming Pool and Golf Club. Come join the fun at the annual Show in May or the Ross Cup Races in October.
