Norwegian Cruise Lines stock rises on Barclays, Truist upgrades

Yahoo Finance Live anchors discuss stock performance for Norwegian Cruise Lines after Barclays and Truist upgrade their ratings on the stock.

Video Transcript

[AUDIO LOGO]

BRAD SMITH: Also here, we got to check in on shares of Norwegian Cruise Line. They've got a price target boost by Barclays. That was the first one. $14 to $16. Now, that's their new price target.

But the good news doesn't stop there. That was just the first one. Truist Securities upgrading Norwegian Cruise Line to buy from hold as booking volumes and pricing for luxury lines improve. They're seeing a look at shares moving higher by about 2% here early in the trading session.

And for the cruise line operators, they've been looking for more of the-- I don't want to say red tape, but more of the precautions to continue to be eased, especially here in the US but even more broadly on some of the destinations that they are going into it as well, because that has been so key to being able to disembark from the voyage safely and get back on, and mitigate the risk for Norwegian Royal Caribbean and Carnival of any type of transmission of virus or illness on board.

JULIE HYMAN: Yeah, and I have to cop to not knowing that Norwegian was sort of at the upper end of the market, right? But what's interesting here is that these analysts are talking about that luxury-- what we're seeing in luxury demand for cruises-- is mirroring what we're seeing in retail, for example. What we've been hearing recently from some of the higher end retailers that they are still seeing strength.

The analysts over at Truist specifically citing some figures here, saying that bookings have moderated to up mingles-- midsingle digits compared with 2019. But that's still, quote-unquote, materially stronger than the decline that we saw in June and July of 10% to 15%. So it's all relative. But on a relative basis, these guys are seeing better numbers.

BRAD SMITH: Yeah, the thesis is interesting because it certainly looks at or tries to draw a corollary between what we've seen in the high-income consumer on the retail front even, and apply that to a service business within Norwegian. And sure, yeah, there's the same appetite in terms of what we've seen in the shift of spending from goods to services over the course of the summer, there is some cyclicality to that.

But now it comes down to-- for all of these cruise line operators, but especially if you're going to make that thesis for Norwegian then it comes down to how much those bookings are gonna continuously improve in a period where people are, all right, looking towards the end of the year. Thinking about holiday shopping, spending like that. And perhaps maybe doing some early bookings for next year even.

And I guess that's where we'll have to see where Norwegian are starting to see some of those bookings and the campaigns that they've run to re-engage with so much of this really committed and enthusiastic cruise line consortium of customers, because I think that's perhaps in the experience economy, one of the most loyal type of consumers that's out there in the [? experience ?] [? kind. ?]

JULIE HYMAN: It certainly seems that way. And then they got to buy the resort wear as well to--

BRAD SMITH: Oh.

JULIE HYMAN: --go on the cruise.

BRAD SMITH: Yeah.

JULIE HYMAN: Maybe that'll hold up well. I don't know, we'll see.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd NCLH

Company report, norwegian earnings: as pricing growth trends toward a normal pace, shares remain a steal.

We don’t plan any material change to our $29 fair value estimate for narrow-moat Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings after incorporating first-quarter results and increasing our net revenue yield outlook for 2024. Shares traded down more than 10% after earnings, which we believe was a result of Norwegian maintaining its full-year cost forecast despite better-than-expected expenses in the first quarter. We view Norwegian’s cost outlook as pragmatic, given still-high commodity costs (fuel, food) and uncertain geopolitical environments that can disrupt equilibrium in the expense structure. Even when including a 325-basis-point headwind Norwegian faces in 2024 for an increase in dry-dock days, 2024 costs excluding fuel have risen at a 3% CAGR relative to 2019, implying that cost management has been solid. Shares look undervalued.

Price vs Fair Value

Bulls say, bears say.

As Norwegian is smaller than its North American cruise peers, it has the ability to deploy its assets nimbly as cruising demand rises, allowing for strategic pricing tactics.
Weakness in consumer spending spurred by an economic downturn could affect discretionary spending, leading pricing to soften and lower onboard spending.

Financial Strength

Profitability, travel services industry comparables, sponsor center.

Meet the Norwegian-owned cruise challenger to Carnival and Royal Caribbean that just raised $1.54 billion

a cruise in the ocean

Viking had humble beginnings.

The now-listed cruise line was once just a venture by “two guys with two mobile phones and four river ships,” as the company’s CEO, Torstein Hagen, puts it in Viking’s prospectus .

But a lot has changed in 27 years. Now, the Norwegian-owned, Bermuda-based business has a staff of 10,000 catering to guests with a taste for the finer things in life.

The cruise operator, which made its name in European river tours, launched its initial public offering at the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday. It raised $1.54 billion , according to Reuters, making it the biggest listing in the U.S. this year.

Viking rebounded strongly after the COVID-19 pandemic decimated cruise travel and its public listing comes as luxury consumers are spending more on travel and less on shopping. Some of Viking’s competitors, such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean, have seen record demand for cruises—opening a world of opportunity for the smaller company.

Viking’s beginning

Viking was founded in 1997 by Hagen, who controls most of the company with his daughter, Karine Hagen.

From the start it aimed to give travelers an immersive experience in local cultures as they toured in one of its four river vessels. In the past three decades or so, Viking has expanded its fleet to 92 ships offering three types of experiences via rivers, oceans, and expeditions.

The company has also benefited from some savvy marketing plays: It sponsored PBS Masterpiece series, such as Downton Abbey , and offered themed trips linked to those shows.

Between 2015 and 2023, Viking’s revenue grew at a compound annual rate of 14.4%, outpacing the rest of the cruise industry in the river and luxury ocean segments during this period, the company said in a public filing .

Viking has carved its strategic niche among older, well-off customers, a group it believes is “underserved.” These are not boozy party boats, and there are no kids allowed.

“Our target demographic has greater financial stability, which can make them more resilient to economic conditions and more willing to invest in high-quality travel experiences,” Viking said.

And that’s the space it hopes it can dominate, with the help of its IPO funds.

The Viking founder and road ahead

Hagen didn’t enter the world of cruises till the 1970s.

A physics major in school, Hagen earned an MBA at Harvard University before entering management consulting. He dabbled with entrepreneurship a few times before finally succeeding, Bloomberg reported .

When business for Viking’s river cruises, its first service, began to pick up, Hagen expanded to offer journeys worldwide—from expeditions in Antarctica to river cruises in Vietnam.

Viking is on an expedition of its own now that its shares are traded. Last year, the cruise line hosted close to 650,000 guests and generated $4.7 billion in revenue, up by almost 50% from 2022. Its underlying profits were $1.1 billion for the same period, according to Viking’s prospectus.

The cruise company is still much smaller than rivals like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian. But it’s a global leader in some segments, such as luxury ocean cruises.

Following a strong open, Viking’s market valuation has reached more than $10 billion, putting Hagen’s wealth at $5 billion. As the appetite for luxury travel builds , Viking is ready to ride the wave.

Princess Cruises is taking a page out of the ultra-luxury cruise industry with new all-inclusive, $3,000 cabins

  • Princess Cruises says its new Sun Princess and upcoming Star Princess will have all-inclusive cabins.
  • Guests who've booked the new Sanctuary Collection category would get an inclusive package and private lounge.
  • It's a move that could appeal to ultra-luxury cruisers .

Insider Today

If you want to go on an all-inclusive vacation at sea, you no longer need to book an ultra-luxury, ultra-expensive cruise line .

Just sail on Princess Cruises' new ship instead.

In October, Princess says its two-month-old Sun Princess will debut in the US with the company's first-ever Sanctuary Collection, an adult-only lounge exclusive to guests who've booked one of the collection's high-end cabins. These luxurious accommodations comprise 10% of the ship's 2,157 staterooms, including all its suites.

But the Sanctuary's biggest perk arguably isn't the lounge's private pool and restaurant — it's the all-inclusiveness , a rarity among mass-market cruise lines.

It's the Carnival Corp. brand's latest appeal to ultra-luxury cruisers

Mass-market cruise lines like Princess, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian typically follow the " budget airline " strategy: charge a cheap base fare and offer plenty of irresistible up-charged amenities (like specialty restaurants, as is the case of Sun Princess).

It's a stark contrast to the high-end cruise industry, where all-inclusivity is often considered the standard.

For example, luxury cruise line Explora Journey's fare includes alcoholic beverages, WiFi, and access to the spa — amenities that would typically cost extra on ships like Sun Princess. On Regent Seven Seas , all this, plus excursions, pre-cruise hotels, and roundtrip flights are also included in the cost to sail.

Related stories

Over the last few years, Princess has begun following in these high-end cruise lines' foosteps.

In 2022, it launched Princess Premier, an optional inclusive package covering amenities like WiFi, drinks, some upcharged restaurants, and workout classes. It's the same package Sanctuary Collection guests would get, along with the private restaurant and adult-only lounge with cabanas, a pool, and private events.

The exclusive lounge concept is nothing new. Royal Caribbean's two largest cruise liners have a "neighborhood" exclusive to suite guests. The same applies to Norwegian, Celebrity, and MSC Cruises' vessels.

However, while these competing retreats offer perks like drink packages, WiFi, or private restaurants, none are as "inclusive" as Princess'.

In 2024, Sun Princess' Sanctuary cabins start at more than $3,000 per person for a weeklong Caribbean cruise in mid-December. To compare, the cheapest interior cabin for the same itinerary starts shy of $700 per person.

The cruise line says its next ship, Star Princess, which will debut in late September 2025, will also carry the Sanctuary Collection.

Following in the footsteps of high-end, all-inclusive cruise lines could be a wise decision for Princess. These luxury vacations at sea have become increasingly popular as travelers continue to spend big on their trips.

Like Princess, expedition cruise company HX recently shifted to an all-inclusive model as well.

Back on dry land, hotel giants like Hyatt and Marriott have also seen a boom in these "everything free" resorts .

Apparently, every vacationer — whether on water or solid ground — just wants one thing: stress-free poolside lounging with bottomless drinks.
