Australia targets social media with parliamentary probe

Australia announced on Friday that it would hold a parliamentary inquiry to look into the negative impacts of social media platforms, saying they have significant reach and control over what Australians see online, with almost no scrutiny.

Following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia on Feb. 24, 2022, people around the world expressed support for the Eastern European nation in ways appropriate for 2022. Turkish football fans engaged in an anti-Kremlin chant while the Taliban called for a “peaceful” resolution between the two parties.

In true French fashion, Parisians illuminated the Eiffel Tower, a symbol of the European city, with the blue and gold of the Ukrainian flag.

A video of the lighting was posted to Reddit on Feb. 25, 2022, where as of this writing it had been upvoted more than 1,300 times. Meanwhile, a 16-minute video shared by the British publication The Independent was recorded live, showing Paris’ Eiffel Tower lighting up in as a means to express the nation’s support of Ukraine.

French President Emmanuel Macron also expressed his support of Ukraine, announcing that the nation will respond without weakness to Russia’s “act of war” on its neighboring nation.

Watch live as the Eiffel Tower lights up with Ukrainian flag colours

Watch live as Paris ’ Eiffel Tower lights up in blue and yellow, the colours of the Ukrainian flag, to express its support following the Russian invasion.

On Wednesday, Parisian authorities lit the City Hall in the same colours to also show their support after Vladimir Putin ’s troops invaded Ukraine.

Germany’s capital city also sent a clear signal for a free and sovereign Ukraine, by lighting up the Brandenburg Gate.

Today’s show of unity comes after Russia was stripped of this season’s Champions League final with Paris now set to host the match.

Jeudi, le 23 février, la tour Eiffel s’illuminera aux couleurs du drapeau ukrainien afin de réaffirmer le soutien indéfectible de la Ville de Paris au peuple ukrainien et sa volonté de coopérer à la reconstruction du pays.

Anne Hidalgo, maire de Paris, ses adjoints, des partenaires associatifs et des personnalités ukrainiennes se rendront sur le parvis des Droits de l’homme au Trocadéro le 23 février à 18h30 pour rendre hommage à l’Ukraine et saluer la résistance héroïque de son peuple. Une image symbolique pour soutenir un pays en guerre.

Le 9 février 2023, la maire de Paris réaffirmait ce soutien devant le Conseil municipal de Kiev, faisant suite à une précédente visite en avril 2022 au cours de laquelle elle avait remis la Citoyenneté d’honneur attribuée à la capitale ukrainienne à Vitaly Klitschko , en signe de solidarité et d’amitié des Parisiens.

En 2022, au début de la guerre avec la Russie, un grand nombre de lieux municipaux français avaient choisi de monter le drapeau jaune et bleu en solidarité avec l’Ukraine . Le soutien des Français envers les Ukrainiens se poursuit avec l’espoir que la guerre prenne fin.

Paris : la Tour Eiffel sera illuminée aux couleurs de l'Ukraine jeudi, un an après le début de l'invasion russe

La Tour Eiffel sera illuminée aux couleurs du drapeau ukrainien jeudi 23 février à partir de 18h30, à l'occasion de la première année de la guerre dans le pays , annonce mardi 21 février la mairie de Paris dans un communiqué.

Cette illumination jaune et bleue se poursuivra jusqu'à dimanche soir. Dans son communiqué, la municipalité explique vouloir marquer son "soutien indéfectible" au peuple ukrainien et redire "sa volonté de coopérer à la reconstruction du pays" .

Le 25 février 2022, au lendemain de l'invasion russe en Ukraine, la ville de Paris avait également décidé d'illuminer le monument aux couleurs du pays pour trois jours . Le 9 février, la maire de la capitale française Anne Hidalgo s'était rendue à Kiev où elle avait effectué une visite devant le Conseil municipal de la capitale ukrainienne.

PARIS (Reuters) - Paris lit up the Eiffel Tower in the blue-and-yellow colours of the Ukraine flag on Thursday, as Ukraine's allies around the world prepared to mark one-year of the war between Ukraine and Russia.

In Britain, Londoners also gathered in Trafalgar Square to hold a vigil on behalf of Ukraine, to mark the first anniversary of the war, after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.

La Tour Eiffel va à son tour être éclairée aux couleurs de l'Ukraine vendredi, imitant plusieurs bâtiments européens parés de jaune et bleu ces dernières heures en soutien au pays envahi par la Russie.

Le célèbre monument parisien, l'un des plus visités au monde et symbole de la France, s'illuminera de jaune et bleu dès vendredi 18H00 (17H00 GMT) jusqu'à 00h30 (23h30 GMT), et ce pendant trois soirs de suite jusqu'à dimanche inclus, a indiqué sa société d'exploitation (Sete) dans un communiqué.

Cet acte symbolique a été décidé "à la demande" de la maire PS de Paris Anne Hidalgo, "en soutien à la population ukrainienne", précise la Sete, dont la Ville est l'actionnaire majoritaire.

L'élue socialiste, candidate du PS à la présidentielle, avait déjà décidé mercredi d'éclairer l'Hôtel de Ville aux couleurs jaune et bleue, simultanément avec Berlin et la porte de Brandebourg.

D'autres bâtiments européens ont été illuminés de la sorte depuis mercredi, comme l'Hôtel de Ville de Sarajevo et la porte du Cinquantenaire à Bruxelles.

Les forces russes resserraient vendredi leur étau autour de Kiev, avec des combats en cours dans et aux abords de la capitale de l'Ukraine, au deuxième jour d'une invasion qui a déjà fait des dizaines de morts et plus de 100.000 déplacés.

La Tour Eiffel affiche pour la troisième fois les couleurs de l'Ukraine ce jeudi 24 août 2023 . Un message de soutien de la part de la capitale auprès de la population ukrainienne face à l'invasion russe. La Dame de Fer s'était déjà parée de jaune et de bleu une première fois au début de la guerre, puis une seconde lors du triste anniversaire du conflit. Cette fois, c'est dans le cadre de la Journée de l'Indépendance de l'Ukraine que la ville de Paris réitère son engagement solidaire. 

La Journée de l'Indépendance de l'Ukraine avait été proclamée le 24 août 1991. Plus de trente ans après, le pays se retrouve de nouveau en lutte pour conserver son indépendance. Ce jeudi 24 août 2023 , Paris marque le coup à travers deux cérémonies en présence de la marie de Paris, Anne Hidalgo et de l'ambassadeur d'Ukraine en France, Vadym Omelchenko . La première inaugure dans l'après-midi le Jardin de Kyiv - au Peuple Ukrainien , renommant ainsi ce qui était anciennement le Jardin des abords du Petit-Palais dans le 8eme arrondissement , à deux pas de l' avenue des Champs-Elysées .

PARIS — Lights on the Eiffel Tower will soon be turned off more than an hour earlier at night to save electricity, as Russia’s war in Ukraine deepens an energy crisis in Europe.

Mayor Anne Hidalgo said the iconic tower — normally illuminated until 1 a.m. — is just one of the monuments and municipal buildings that will be plunged into darkness earlier in the evening as the French capital, like the rest of France and Europe, faces risks of power shortages, rationing and blackouts when energy demand surges this winter.

Starting Sept. 23, lights on the Eiffel Tower will be turned off after the last visitor leaves at 11:45 p.m., Hidalgo said. Other landmarks operated by the city, such as Saint-Jacques tower and City Hall, will be turned off at 10 p.m.

“It’s a symbolic but important step,” Hidalgo said, brushing off criticism that Paris authorities could do more to reduce energy consumption by 10% — the target set in July by President Emmanuel Macron as part of a nationwide “sobriety plan” to conserve energy.

For safety reasons, streetlights will stay on across Paris, and the ornate bridges over the Seine River also will remain illuminated at night, Hidalgo told reporters.

Russia has cut natural gas supplies to several European countries that support Ukraine, sending gas and electricity prices surging. That’s fueled inflation and raised fears about shrinking supplies, prompting countries to enact conservation measures and relief for consumers and businesses.

While some European companies have reduced or halted production as energy prices surge, the European Union is looking to pass proposals to ease the crisis.

To align with France’s savings plan, Hidalgo said she also will press the government to adjust the lighting on national monuments in Paris, such as the domed Pantheon and the Arc de Triomphe — the famous Napoleonic arch that dominates the Champs-Elysees Avenue.

Paris authorities also aim to save energy by lowering the temperature in public buildings by from 66 degrees Fahrenheit to 64 during office hours, lower after hours and on weekends.

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine posted a startling video to its Twitter on Saturday depicting a military attack on the Eiffel Tower in Paris. 

The 45-second video, intended to be a message for NATO, shows the Western city being bombed and urges NATO to "close the sky over Ukraine!"

The video opens with a woman posing in front of the Eiffel Tower. Seconds later, an explosion rocks the city. At one point, flames surround the Eiffel Tower and several planes jet through the open sky.

The camera pans from the Eiffel Tower to other French landmarks like the Sacré-Coeur basilica. Large plumes of smoke engulf the landmarks, and air raid sirens are heard in the distance. 

"We will fight to the end," reads a caption attributed to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. "Just give us a chance to live. Close the sky over Ukraine or give us air fighters. If we fall, you fall."

Zelenskyy has for days called on Western leaders to impose a no-fly zone. Last week, he reiterated that urge as he described in a video how eight Russian missiles  "completely destroyed" an airport in Vinnytsia. 

Earlier this week, he rebuked NATO for deliberating on the decision to implement a no-fly zone, saying the inaction effectively gave Russia a "green light" to continue to strike at Ukraine. 

"All the people who will die from this day will die because of you, as well," Zelensky  said . "Because of your weakness. Because of your disunity."

NATO said  implementing a no-fly zone would escalate the Ukraine-Russia conflict into "a full-fledged war in Europe, involving many more countries and causing much more human suffering." 

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin said  any country that tries to impose a no-fly zone will be considered as "participants in a military conflict, and it doesn't matter members of which organizations they are."

"It is impossible to do it, on the very territory of Ukraine, it's possible only from the territory of some neighboring states. But any movement in this direction will be considered by us as participation in an armed conflict," Putin added.

Paris sous les bombes: le parlement ukrainien diffuse une fausse vidéo de guerre pour interpeller les Européens

Vendredi dans la soirée, le Parlement ukrainien (Rada) a diffusé une vidéo sur Twitter, mettant en scène un bombardement factice de Paris. On peut notamment y voir une jeune femme se prenant en photo avec la Tour Eiffel, avant que cette dernière ne soit bombardée.

Dans une autre séquence, toujours factice, ce sont cette fois les abords de l'opéra Garnier qui sont visés par des tirs. En fond, on attend une femme s'exprimer en français, la voix couverte par les cris d'un enfant.

"Pensez-vous que cela ne vous concerne pas?"

La vidéo, particulièrement anxiogène, a pour objectif d'attirer l'attention des Européens sur la situation en Ukraine, appelant à des mesures supplémentaires pour freiner l'avancée des troupes russes.

L'invasion de l'Ukraine lancée par Vladimir Poutine le 24 février se rapproche progressivement de la capitale Kiev. Des villes, comme Marioupol, sont coupées du reste du pays, entraînant sur place une situation humanitaire dramatique.

"Est-ce que la fameuse Tour Eiffel à Paris ou la porte de Brandebourg à Berlin resteraient debout sous d'incessants bombardements russes? Pensez-vous que cela ne vous concerne pas? Aujourd'hui, c'est l'Ukraine, demain, ce sera toute l'Europe. La Russie ne s'arrêtera pas", écrit dans son tweet la Rada ukrainienne.

En conclusion, la vidéo ukrainienne indique: "fermez le ciel au-dessus de l'Ukraine, ou donnez-nous des avions de combat".

Des demandes déjà refusées par les Occidentaux

L'Otan s'est déjà prononcée contre l'instauration d'une "no fly zone" au-dessus du territoire ukrainien, estimant qu'une telle initiative pourrait déboucher sur une confrontation directe avec Moscou.

We’ve had requests for Taylor Swift on a stage with a microphone in fondant, Taylor Swift riding a unicorn, Taylor Swift album covers, cakes with her face on them … The orders are very specific in the details.”

Beji said her team at the bakery on rue Greneta, near Les Halles shopping mall, were getting into the spirit of things. And as the countdown begins in the French capital to the arrival of the singer’s Eras tour on Thursday – her first performance of a three-month European trip – they are not the only ones.

Honor McWilliams, 24, a Swiftie from Glasgow who lives in Paris teaching English at the Sorbonne, can hardly contain her excitement over attending the opening concert at La Défense, the first of four long-sold-out gigs on 9-12 May. She will also attend on Saturday with her sister Grace and two friends who are flying in from Glasgow, and will be travelling to Milan for a third concert in July.

After previously seeing Swift perform in London, Glasgow, New York and Dublin – and meeting her briefly in London after being picked out of the crowd by Swift’s mother – McWilliams has spent a total of €255 for the Paris tickets and has been babysitting to pay for them. “To this day my love of Taylor Swift has been a cornerstone of many of my personal, and even professional, relationships,” she said.

“I connect so much with the French university students I teach here because of our shared love of Taylor Swift. Each week they’ll ask me for my opinion on the latest Taylor Swift news, and I will find any way I can to make reference to her in lessons. One student even termed me the ‘Taylor Swift of the Sorbonne’, which may very well be the best professional compliment I will ever get.”

What is the core of Swift’s appeal? McWilliams cites “the eloquence of the lyrics in her songs, her work ethic, gravitas, her intelligence and captivating ability to tell stories, connect with others and generate such enthusiasm.”

Swift’s popularity has been a slow burn in France, where she gave her first concert in 2010. There was a touch of Emily in Paris to the official video for Begin Again , a 2012 song from her fourth studio album Red. Shot in Paris, it shows her as the quintessential American in Paris, writing postcards, walking on the Pont des Arts and visiting a patisserie as she meets a handsome stranger who approaches her in a cafe.

She continued to associate the city with romance. The only concert to promote her 2019 album Lover, a wondrously lovestruck album written amid her relationship with the actor Joe Alwyn, was performed in Paris – a show entitled City of Lover, performed at the relatively intimate Olympia venue. She then wrote a song entitled Paris for her 2023 album Midnights, where Swift, “so in love that I might stop breathing”, imagines being with her partner in the city. “I wanna transport you to somewhere the culture’s clever”, she sings, adding “let the only flashing lights be the tower at midnight” – a reference to the glittering light show put on by the Eiffel Tower.

It all adds a certain frisson to her tour opener this week, but Prof Linda Bloss-Baum , an assistant director of the business and entertainment programme at American University’s Kogod School of Business in Washington, says Swift’s arrival is a big deal for any city.

“It has an incredible economic impact. I know many American people who have opted to take a trip to Europe to see Taylor Swift because the tickets were more affordable. They’re making a holiday of it, so it’s not just the tickets, it has an economic benefit for the whole city with people staying in hotels, eating in restaurants. The ripple effect with Taylor Swift is amazing, unprecedented.”

She added: “France has always been a bit of an anomaly in terms of the music business, with perhaps a little less appetite for US pop as a genre, but Taylor Swift is an exception. She seems to generate an emotional reaction from people who don’t necessarily even speak English but want to be part of the phenomenon. I think what has happened is that, post-Covid pandemic, people are seeking an experience and this is the experience people want this year. It’s top of their list. The average concertgoer is not holding back in spending. They’re forging a lifetime marker.”

The Paris concerts are especially anticipated because they are the first following the release of Swift’s enormously successful new album The Tortured Poets Department, which has broken a series of streaming records since its April 19 release. Fans are hoping that she will append material from the album to the Eras setlist.

The conservative newspaper Le Figaro has even got in on the Swift act with an article advising desperate, ticketless Swifties on how to avoid being ripped off with fake tickets.

The official price was between €69.50 and €245.50 for seats and up to €827.40 for VIP packages. Warning that resale prices were likely to be higher and could involve counterfeits, the paper warned: “If you haven’t bought your ticket on an official site there’s no way to easily verify the authenticity or validity of a ticket.”

At Clove Bakery , the team is working flat out to have all their orders ready on time. “It’s incredible, and not what we set out to do when we opened the bakery seven years ago, but it’s also a lot of fun for the bakery team who are all young and getting involved in the excitement too,” Beji said.

Les Jeux olympiques 2024 à Paris

Enchaîner quelques brasses dans la Seine sera bientôt possible. Plus précisément à Bercy, dans le 12e arrondissement de Paris, sur le bras Marie (entre l'île Saint-Louis et Saint-Paul) dans le 4e arrondissement, ainsi que sur le bras de Grenelle, non loin de la tour Eiffel, dans le 15e. Voici les trois sites de baignade parisiens dans la Seine que la mairie de Paris souhaite ouvrir au public amateur de loisirs aquatiques à l'été 2025.

Les projets de ces sites prennent forme dans une délibération du prochain conseil de Paris, qui sera par ailleurs soumise aux élus fin mai.

10 millions d'euros de travaux

La mairie de Paris a donné quelques précisions sur ces futurs sites de baignade. D'abord, le site situé à Bercy, entre les ponts de Bercy et de Tolbiac, doit s'étendre sur 110 m de berges. Il coûtera au total 6 millions d'euros, un coût "majoré" en raison "d'ouvrages de sécurisation" pérennes pour pouvoir maintenir la navigation fluviale sur le chenal.

Concernant les sites de Pont-Marie, qui fera 75 m de long, et de Grenelle (80 m), ils coûteront 2 millions d'euros chacun car, situés sur des bras secondaires de la Seine , ils ne nécessiteront pas ces ouvrages. Leur zone de baignade s'étendra "sur le chenal de navigation" , précise la mairie. Cette dernière négocie depuis plusieurs mois avec les professionnels usagers du fleuve (fret, bateaux-mouches), inquiets de restrictions de circulation, particulièrement sur le bras Marie.

Une baignade limitée

Pour ces trois sites, la mairie a prévu l'installation de pontons flottants, qui permettront de "faciliter la surveillance des nageurs" et d' "empêcher la baignade hors zone délimitée". Les travaux seront menés au printemps 2025 pour que les sites de baignade puissent ouvrir "fin juin 2025" , a annoncé la mairie dirigée par Anne Hidalgo, laquelle a d'ailleurs prévu de se baigner dans la Seine autour du 23 juin prochain, soit un mois avant les épreuves de triathlon et de natation marathon.

La baignade dans les trois sites parisiens ne sera toutefois pas autorisée toute l'année. Ceux qui comptaient barboter dans la Seine en plein hiver risquent donc d'être déçus, puisque la baignade "sera limitée à la saison estivale" . En revanche, elle sera "gratuite et ouverte largement au public", assure la mairie.

La reconquête du fleuve parisien pour les JO

Dans le cadre de Paris Plages, se baigner dans les eaux de la capitale est déjà possible depuis 2017 dans le bassin de La Villette et depuis 2023 dans le canal Saint-Martin. La reconquête de la Seine pour y permettre la baignade a connu un coup d'accélérateur avec les Jeux olympiques de Paris 2024, qui se dérouleront du 26 juillet au 11 août. L'État et les collectivités ont investi 1,4 milliard d'euros pour construire notamment le bassin de rétention des eaux pluviales et usées d'Austerlitz.

Le suspense demeure cependant sur la bonne tenue des épreuves olympiques dans la Seine après l'annulation en août 2023 de plusieurs répétitions en raison de seuils de qualité de l'eau dépassés, notamment après de fortes pluies. Les analyses réalisées de 2015 à 2023, transmises à l'AFP par la mairie de Paris, ont d'ailleurs montré de fortes variations l'été dernier, avec plusieurs pics de concentration de deux bactéries indicatrices de contamination fécale.
