2022 Range Rover US Models and MSRP 2

With a suite of efficient mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain (available at 2023 model year) – and a pure-electric Range Rover set to join the line-up in 2024 – plus a choice of four, five or seven-seat interiors available across Standard and Long Wheelbase body designs, the New Range Rover is at home in any environment.

The New Range Rover is a superb manifestation of our vision to create the world’s most desirable luxury vehicles, for the most discerning of customers. It writes the next chapter in the unique story of pioneering innovation that has been a Range Rover hallmark for more than 50 years.

Thierry Bolloré

Chief executive officer, jaguar land rover.

The Land Rover brand’s new flexible Modular Longitudinal Architecture, MLA-Flex, underpins every aspect of this luxury SUV, from its incredible capability and agile handling to its peerless refinement.

The new luxury SUV is available in SE and Autobiography models. A First Edition will be available throughout the first year of production, based on the Autobiography and featuring a unique specification. Breathtaking modernity

The fifth-generation luxury SUV takes the Land Rover brand’s modernist design philosophy to the next level, with a contemporary interpretation of its trademark profile to create an incredible design statement. It continues to lead, bringing breathtaking modernity, aesthetic grace and sophistication to the latest flagship.

The New Range Rover is a vehicle with a peerless character, from the impeccable restraint of its exterior to the flawless tranquil sanctuary of its cabin. Informed by creative intellect and a desire for perfection, it doesn’t follow fashion or trend, but by a modernist design philosophy, combined with over 50 years of evolution, it is quite simply the most desirable Range Rover ever created.

Prof Gerry McGovern OBE

Chief creative officer, jaguar land rover.

The New Range Rover is defined by three lines that can trace their origins back through the generations; the falling roofline, strong waistline and rising sill line. These trademark features combine with a characteristically short front overhang and a distinctive new boat tail rear – complete with practical split tailgate – to create an elegant profile that conveys peerless presence of the Range Rover.

The unbroken waistline showcases the Land Rover brand’s attention to detail as the rounded edge of the door meets the glass in a simple, clean finish thanks to a specially engineered hidden waist finisher. The design-enabling technology combines with flush glazing, hidden-until-lit lighting and precise detailing to create the impression that the vehicle has been milled from solid.

The luxurious interior is underpinned by modern, intuitive and relevant technologies, designed to work harmoniously with the finest materials and wellbeing innovations to create a calm sanctuary for all occupants – turning every trip into an experience to savor.

The exterior color palette elevates the elegant proportions and clean surfaces of the New Range Rover while the interior options are more sustainable, responsible and progressive than ever. Customers have a wider choice of materials and finishes, including innovative textiles and tactile Ultrafabrics™ with a continuation of the Land Rover brand’s pioneering relationship with Kvadrat™ – Europe’s leading manufacturer of premium textiles.

HERO FILM: INTRODUCING THE NEW RANGE ROVER AND RANGE ROVER SV

Peerless refinement

The New Range Rover makes every journey an occasion to be remembered, combining advanced technology with modern luxury to deliver peerless refinement for every occupant, including those in the new optional third-row seats. By eliminating unwanted noises, vibrations and distractions – and reducing the cognitive load on the driver and passengers – occupants will arrive at their destination feeling refreshed.

Advanced speaker technology builds on the fundamental refinement provided by the MLA-Flex body architecture to deliver serene cabin calmness – ensuring passengers enjoy a first-class experience. It uses the 1,600W Meridian™ Signature Sound System (not available on SE; standard on Autobiography and First Edition models) to create one of the quietest vehicle interiors on the road, with additional 20W speakers in the four main headrests for the most immersive sound experience.

Included with the Meridian™ Signature Sound System, the third-generation Active Noise Cancellation system monitors wheel vibrations, tire noise and engine sounds transmitted into the cabin and generates a cancelling signal, which is played through the system’s 35 speakers. These include a pair of 60mm diameter speakers in the headrests for each of the four main cabin occupants, which create personal quiet zones similar to the effect when using high-end headphones.

The Range Rover was the first luxury SUV to feature Electronic Air Suspension in 1992. The New Range Rover continues this pioneering approach with Dynamic Response Pro and pre-emptive suspension that uses eHorizon Navigation data to read the road ahead and prime the suspension to provide appropriate responses.(7)

The intelligent technology also works in conjunction with the Adaptive Cruise Control with Steering Assist to smooth out body movements resulting from sudden changes in speed.(7_ Fully independent suspension underpins the luxurious ride and features the Land Rover brand’s first ever five-link rear axle, which isolates the cabin from surface imperfections more effectively than ever using advanced air springs.

The New Range Rover is also the first Land Rover vehicle to feature optional Power Assisted Doors – available at 2023 model year – with integrated hazard detection and anti-pinch features, which enhance its Soft Door Close capability and ensure every trip begins and ends with effortless refinement and sophistication. All four passenger doors are power assisted – also controlled via the Pivi Pro(6) screen – for elegant entry and exit, including at angles of up to 10 degrees while off-road. Advanced hazard detection means the doors can automatically pause until the sweep of the door is cleared(7). The practical two-piece split tailgate that has been a Range Rover hallmark since 1970 is updated for 2022, with a series of new technologies providing greater versatility and convenience.

Inside, the new optional Versatile Loadspace Floor protects luggage and enhances convenience. Its clever floor panel can be raised forward, across the width of the load area around its mid-point, forming a partition to contain smaller items and keep them within easy reach when unloading. It can also pivot backwards along its leading edge to serve as a backrest when using the lower tailgate as outdoor seating. The new optional Tailgate Event Suite takes the Versatile Loadspace Floor backrest concept to new heights, combining additional lighting, audio features and tailored leather cushions to create the perfect vantage point for outdoor relaxation.

Five-seat models debut a new Auto-Folding Loadspace Cover. Combining the practicality of a rigid cover with the convenience of a retractable design, it elegantly retreats when the upper tailgate is opened to provide unrestricted access to the load area, without opening the lower tailgate.

Seamless technology

The New Range Rover maintains its rich bloodline of pioneering innovation with a suite of technologies designed to effortlessly enhance convenience, efficiency, refinement and safety. The latest Electrical Vehicle Architecture (EVA 2.0) on Land Rover vehicles, is the enabler-in-chief and includes Software-Over-The-Air (SOTA) updates for more than 70 electronic modules, meaning the New Range Rover will constantly evolve, improve and remain up to date as it matures.

The New Range Rover revolutionizes the in-car experience with seamlessly integrated Amazon Alexa(1). Using intuitive natural voice commands goes one step beyond touchscreen or button interfaces in helping reduce cognitive load, providing a sense of effortless modern luxury. In this way, Alexa capabilities allow customers to manage everything from favorite infotainment features and music track selection to navigation or phone contacts – all while keeping their hands on the wheel, and eyes on the road.8

Alexa(1) voice AI is embedded within the New Range Rover, so users experience seamless interactivity and next-level convenience. Alexa capabilities also allow customers to check the news, weather and for any scheduled meetings using simple voice commands.8 The system can even turn on your lights at home and connect to other Alexa-enabled devices.

Alexa(1) works in addition to Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Wireless Android Auto™ and can be initiated either by saying “Alexa” or pressing the Alexa button on the central touchscreen 4 . It does not need a phone or external device to operate – only details of a customer’s Amazon account and an internet connection – while wireless charging for Qi compatible smartphones keeps devices topped up.

SiriusXM with 360L(3) debuts on 2022 Range Rover, offering an extensive and personalized radio experience on the road. The advanced in-car technology guides users through the largest in-car catalogue of SiriusXM channels, shows and exclusive content for a ride that's unique to the driver. Users will enjoy a variety of ad-free music, plus sports, news and talk — and for the first time, experience SiriusXM’s on-demand content, ad-free personalized Pandora stations and curated recommendations for each vehicle.

The New Range Rover combines supreme on-road and all-terrain capability with electrified propulsion and new levels of connected capability. In the quest for comfort, we have been obsessed with human science and understanding brain activity to minimize cognitive impact and ensure these advanced technologies work in absolute harmony, creating a truly effortless driving experience. It’s an engineer’s duty to make people’s lives better, and that’s exactly what the New Range Rover will do for you.

Nick Rogers

Executive director, product engineering, jaguar land rover.

The New Range Rover elevates the Land Rover brand’s award-winning Pivi Pro infotainment technology6 with its largest ever touchscreen. The 13.1-inch curved, floating screen embodies the architectural lightness of the interior with a minimalist frame design. It provides intuitive control of all the major vehicle functions, using the latest consumer technology to deliver a smartphone-inspired interface, allied to convenient hard switches for the climate control.

Pivi Pro(6) works in harmony with an elegant new semi-floating 13.7-inch Interactive Driver Display, which features new high-definition graphics based around a three-panel layout that intuitively reflects the design of the Pivi Pro homescreen. Customers can choose from a variety of configurations, including a conventional analogue layout, using the steering wheel controls.

For the first time in a Land Rover vehicle, the central display will provide haptic feedback when customers touch and press the screen. Allowing users to feel a positive confirmation without the need to glance at the screen, it reduces the need to look away from the road and makes Pivi Pro even more intuitive(6).

Rear passengers can enjoy a new optional Rear Seat Entertainment system, which provides adjustable 11.4-inch HD touchscreens mounted on the rear of the front seatbacks. They can be operated independently and support the connection of most devices with an HDMI port, while using Wi-Fi hotspot9 capability means rear-seat passengers can enjoy smart TV entertainment on the move. The available eight-inch Rear Seat Touchscreen Controller mounted in the center armrest of Executive Class Rear Seats provides quick and intuitive control for the perfect seating position, elevating the luxurious rear-seat experience.

New Maneuvering Lights help drivers complete low-speed maneuvers in dimly lit surroundings with complete confidence, by creating a blanket of light around the perimeter of the vehicle, working with the 3D Surround Camera system to provide maneuverability(7).

Serene capability and composure

The flagship of the Land Rover family represents the pinnacle of refined capability thanks to advanced hardware and software systems working in complete harmony, enabled by the new MLA-Flex body architecture. This unrivalled breadth of dynamic capability is governed by the brand’s Integrated Chassis Control – a single control system for a suite of advanced technologies that tailor the vehicle dynamics to suit every mile of every journey, to pre-emptively and reactively fine-tune the driving characteristics.

The New Range Rover combines advanced hardware with a pioneering toolkit of digital technologies and software, all enabled by our advanced electrical architecture – moving Range Rover from a mechanical world to a mechatronic ecosystem that delivers an intuitive drive. Our new Integrated Chassis Control system is a prime example of this philosophy and co-ordinates a suite of predictive and reactive technologies, that make this the most comfortable and agile Range Rover ever produced.

Rory O’Murchu

Vehicle line director, jaguar land rover.

Every New Range Rover features All-Wheel Steering for an effortless drive with heightened stability at speed and improved maneuverability at low speeds, ensuring it is equally at home on the open road and negotiating tight urban streets 7 .

The electrically operated rear axle provides up to seven degrees of steering angle and, at low speeds, turns out-of-phase of the front wheels, giving the New Range Rover a turning circle of 36 feet – the smallest of any Land Rover vehicle. At higher speeds the rear axle turns in phase with the front wheels for enhanced stability and comfort.

The New Range Rover is also the first Land Rover vehicle to feature Dynamic Response Pro. The powerful new active 48-volt electronic roll control system is faster-acting and more efficient than a hydraulic set-up, with a torque capacity of over 1,000 lb-ft fed into the rollover protection system to keep body movements under control7.

Fully independent air suspension isolates the cabin from surface imperfections more effectively than ever, for serene composure. It combines air springs volumes with twin-valve dampers – all managed by in-house-developed Adaptive Dynamics control software7.

The intelligent All-Wheel Drive (iAWD) transmission is controlled by the Land Rover brand’s Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD) system, which monitors grip levels and driver inputs 100 times a second to predictively distribute torque between the front and rear axles, and across the rear axle, for optimum traction on and off-road 7 .

Every Range Rover also features an Active Locking Rear Differential. This optimizes traction from the rear axle during cornering, on slippery surfaces and during off-road wheel articulation, delivering enhanced capability and driver confidence7.

All of this technology feeds into the Land Rover brand’s award-winning Terrain Response® 2 system, which harnesses the various chassis systems to automatically provide the perfect settings for the surroundings, from a choice of six driving modes, to minimize driver workload across various terrains. Alternatively, the driver can select the most appropriate setting manually or, use Configurable Terrain Response® to create a bespoke chassis set-up7.

Electrified efficiency

The New Range Rover maintains its compelling combination of effortless performance and peerless refinement with a comprehensive line-up of advanced six- and eight-cylinder powertrains. Spearheading the Land Rover brand’s Reimagine strategy, a pure-electric model will join the family in 2024, bringing full-time zero tailpipe emissions driving to the Range Rover for the first time.

Available at 2023 model year, the new extended-range plug-in hybrid (PHEV) combines the inherent refinement of the Land Rover brand’s inline six-cylinder Ingenium engine with a 38.2kWh lithium-ion battery – with usable capacity of 31.8kWh – and a 105kW electric motor integrated with the transmission. Together, the powertrain provides up to 62 miles10 of near-silent pure-electric driving.

The 434hp PHEV can reach up to 87mph5 without the use of the gasoline engine allowing customers to enjoy pure-electric driving for most journeys in town and country. The clever packaging of the battery, beneath the vehicle and within the wheelbase, ensures both luggage space and all-terrain capability are uncompromised.

The use of advanced eHorizon navigation data also allows the hybrid system to optimize energy usage across a journey, to provide a peaceful arrival at a destination on electric power, while also optimizing EV usage.

The six-cylinder Ingenium engine features the latest 48-volt mild hybrid technology. The system’s clever belt-integrated starter motor ensures more responsive and refined operation of the stop-start system and provides extra assistance to the engine when accelerating.

Exquisite personalization

The New Range Rover SV will provide an exquisite interpretation of Range Rover luxury and personalization, giving customers even more scope to create a truly individual vehicle with a choice of exclusive design themes, details and material choices from SV.

This hand-crafted model will be the first Land Rover vehicle to carry the new ceramic SV roundel and simplified naming strategy – known simply as SV. The SV roundel represents the distillation of Special Vehicle Operations design and engineering passion for modern luxury, performance and capability. The SV roundel will identify all new Land Rover vehicles launched by Special Vehicle Operations in the future.

Special Vehicle Operations exists to amplify the core characteristics of Land Rover vehicles, obsessing over every detail with a passion for quality. In the case of Range Rover, that means injecting even more luxury into every part of the car. With more choice than ever before, our customers will be able to create a new Range Rover SV that truly reflects their personality, their dreams, their desires. That is how we interpret modern luxury.

Michael van der Sande

Managing director, special vehicle operations.

Both Standard and Long Wheelbase body designs – including a five-seat LWB configuration for the first time – are available with specially curated SV Serenity and SV Intrepid design themes, which introduce two-tone front-to-rear contrasting colorways to Range Rover. Exclusive materials include lustrous plated metals, smooth ceramics, intricate mosaic marquetry and soft near-aniline leather, as well as sustainable non-leather Ultrafabrics™.

The sumptuous new SV Signature Suite option on LWB models epitomizes the heightened luxury and craftsmanship of Range Rover SV, providing a peerless travelling environment for its most discerning customers. Its uniquely cosseting seats feature 24-way adjustment with massage functionality, while an elegant electrically deployable Club Table rises theatrically from the fixed full-length center console on beautifully engineered supports to provide a convenient workspace when required.

The Range Rover SV will be available with the refined new 523hp twin turbocharged V8 powertrain.

New quality benchmark

The New Range Rover has been designed, developed and engineered in the UK and, during this process, Land Rover has filed no fewer than 125 patents covering everything from its pioneering chassis technologies to its PHEV battery. Land Rover engineers used motorsport-derived simulation technology to put the vehicle through its paces in the virtual world more comprehensively and intensively than ever, completing more than 140,000 hours of computational analysis prior to physical testing.

A fleet of prototypes then embarked on a punishing global test and development program, taking in extreme temperatures ranging from the 100 ° F + heat of the desert to the -20 ° F cold of the Arctic.

The New Range Rover will be produced exclusively at the Solihull Manufacturing Facility in the UK, using a state-of-the-art production line housed in the building used to produce early Series Land Rover vehicles. The historic building is the spiritual home of Land Rover and its reimagining as a new, ultra-modern center for Range Rover production showcases the way the company protects its heritage.

The New Range Rover is available to order now, priced from $104,0002 in the U.S. Find out more here: LandRoverUSA.com

2023 Land Rover Range Rover Takes a Giant Step Forward

A longer wheelbase at last enables a three-row model and paves the way for a plug-in hybrid with meaningful range as well as a full battery-electric version.

2024 land rover range rover se lwb

UPDATE 10/12/22: This article has been updated with test results for mechanically identical short- and long-wheelbase 2022 models.

It's not as if we were tailgating or flashing our lights, and our SUV wasn't painted black and white with a light bar on top. Sure, the new Range Rover is easy to hustle along at a good clip and there was a certain closing rate involved, but in our experience the usual reaction is to patently ignore the desires of those behind and stay put until they're good and ready—especially if they're holding up just one vehicle.

2022 land rover range rover se lwb

Perhaps the new Range Rover looks impressive in a rearview mirror, and they wished to take a gander. That's certainly the case when it's parked, because there's a simple elegance to the flowing shape of the new Range Rover that stands in direct opposition to some of the more gimmicky new vehicles of late. Its proportions and roofline are unmistakably Range Rover, but there's a precision to the execution that makes it appear to be a design study brought to life. Smooth lines flow along its flanks, barely interrupted by gentle curves and subtle creases.

It's a design that demands a precision build, so considerable effort has been put into tightening flushness tolerances and slimming panel gaps. Our favorite such detail might just be the way the body sides roll through 90 degrees to meet the side glass with no chamfer, crease, or molding. We also like how the taillights appear to be black accents until they're illuminated, at which point they reveal themselves for what they are. The overall shape is as pleasing to the air as it is to the eye, with a remarkable (for an SUV) 0.30 coefficient of drag.

Both the standard (SWB) and long-body (LWB) versions have had their wheelbases stretched by some three inches: from 115.0 to 118.0 inches in the case of the former and 122.9 to 125.9 for the latter. The result is a welcome 1.1-inch increase in rear-seat legroom for the SWB (1.2 inches for the LWB) and an extra six cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row. Critically, the stretched LWB now allows Land Rover to offer three-row seating for the first time. Proportions remain familiar, though, because tidier overhangs limit the overall length increase to just 2.0 inches, and larger 32-inch tires nicely fill out the subtly enlarged fender openings.

Underneath, the rear suspension has been changed from an "integral link" multilink with a complex lower arm to a true five-link setup. The benefits are twofold and significant. The setup makes rear-wheel steering possible, and this new feature (which is standard) chops some five feet off the turning radius despite the elongated wheelbases. A new long-body Rover can hang a U-turn in just 37.9 feet, a maneuver that required 42.8 feet in the outgoing LWB machine and 40.5 in the old SWB model. A new SWB Range Rover can do the deed in just 35.9 feet, which is only 1.5 feet shy of a two-door Jeep Wrangler .

The new multilink setup also consumes less inboard packaging space where the links attach, a crucial attribute that allows for the fitment of a transverse electric motor in a full battery-electric (BEV) version. The longer wheelbase also comes into play with the size of the all-important underfloor battery, but such specifics won't be revealed until later. We know a bit more about how this affects the soon-to-be-released plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model, which has a significantly enlarged 31.8-kWh battery that will enable an expected EPA range rating of 48 miles instead of the outgoing one's near-useless 19 miles.

Until those plug-ins arrive, two gasoline engines are available. The P400 is a supercharged and turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, which carries over from last year. As before, it makes 395 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque and is paired with an eight-speed automatic. The combination moves out smartly and smoothly, even when motivating the seven-passenger long-wheelbase SE. Our test sample hustled to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds, which only falls short of the BMW X7 iDrive40 by a tenth of a second, which is something of a miracle because our Rover's 5932-pound curb weight represents nearly 600 pounds more mass than the BMW.

Where the mass really shows up is in limit cornering, which is arguably not much of a concern to those hauling a carful of passengers. The three-row Rover twirls around the skidpad to the tune of a respectable 0.74 g, with the lighter X7 earning 0.81 g. The same mass relationship does not track with the duo's 70-mph stopping distances, a metric that has much more relevance to family-hauler safety. Here the Range Rover's impressive 175-foot stop eclipses the BMW's 184 feet.

The P530 twin-turbo V-8 is a new offering, designed and built by BMW to Land Rover specifications. Changes made for Range Rover duty include a higher intake tract that enables 35.4 inches of water-fording depth and a reworked sump that won't oil-starve the engine during extreme forward, back, or sideways off-road driving angles. The P530 cranks out 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, and it delivers its smooth rush of thrust through an eight-speed automatic. We measured a 60-mph sprint of 4.3 seconds on the way to a 12.8-second quarter-mile dash, and Land Rover says it's good for towing 8200 pounds. At the model's introduction, we noted that the P530 delivers a refined growl when you stand on it that fades appropriately into the background when you achieve cruising speed. This was borne out during track testing, where its 75-decibel wide-open growl settled to 66 decibels when cruising at 70 mph.

2022 land rover range rover se lwb

Relative to the outgoing model, EPA-estimated fuel economy is up from 20 to 21 mpg combined (18 city/26 highway) for the P400 on the strength of a 3-mpg increase in highway fuel economy that owes much to slippery aerodynamics. The P530 V-8 is understandably thirstier at 18 mpg combined (16 city/21 highway). Curiously, both the P400 and the P530 cruised through our 75-mph highway test loop at an identical 23 mpg, an expected result for the inline-six but an outstanding achievement for the V-8.

Northern California's meandering two-lanes are always being reshaped by earth movement, and the Range Rover handled them admirably. In Comfort mode, the air-sprung chassis tended toward float, but in an intentional, stately Range Rover way that could be firmed up by setting the Bilstein adaptive dampers to Dynamic mode. Either way, body motions were far more controlled than before, particularly in roll, where the new fast-acting active anti-roll-bar system can offer counteracting torque to flatten curves and then appropriately limp on wavy straightaways to combat head toss. But this didn't hold quite as true on the scalloped-edge sections of our Michigan test loop, where the active anti-roll system couldn't quite keep up.

Inside, the accommodations are as classy as the appearance outside, with straightforward controls and handsome appointments. The Achilles heel was perhaps the infotainment system, but that may be a case of guilt by association because the menu flow looks similar to earlier versions we didn't much care for. To be fair, the functions and camera views we did access through the touchscreen were carried out directly, but it'll take additional interactions and a degree of familiarity to get a better sense of its user-friendliness. We did try out the third-row seat, and it's easy to access with a tip-forward second row that moves in a way that allows you to keep many forward-facing child seats or boosters belted in place. Once inside, headroom is tight if you're six feet tall, but you'll find cupholders, USB-C ports, air-conditioning vents, and seat heaters back there. Land Rover did this part right.

2022 land rover range rover se lwb

For 2023, the SE is the entry level model, though it hardly feels bare bones. A P400 SE five-seat SWB goes for $105,975, with the long-wheelbase three-row with the same engine going for $111,975. Stepping up to a P530 V-8 in either one costs $18,300. And while we don't know much about how the P440e plug-in hybrid will drive, we do know it'll be an SE five-seater starting at a comparatively reasonable $109,875. Meanwhile, the V-8 is standard in the three Autobiography models that span the mid-$150,000 to low-$160K range. Above that, the First Edition executive four-seaters slot in, and if you want the ultimate chauffeured-limousine experience, you're staring down the barrel of a base price of $219,775 for a long-wheelbase four-place SV.

But that vehicle isn't the one that impresses us most. The brilliance and style of the new Range Rover is apparent even at the SE level with the base P400 powertrain. That's what really moves the Range Rover up the consideration list, along with the new three-row configuration and useful chassis changes that not only make it more livable every day, they also set the stage for relevant plug-in models in the very near future. Get out of the way, Range Rover is coming on through.

Dan Edmunds was born into the world of automobiles, but not how you might think. His father was a retired racing driver who opened Autoresearch, a race-car-building shop, where Dan cut his teeth as a metal fabricator. Engineering school followed, then SCCA Showroom Stock racing, and that combination landed him suspension development jobs at two different automakers. His writing career began when he was picked up by Edmunds.com (no relation) to build a testing department.

The New Range Rover Is Fabulous

Now in its fifth generation, the Range Rover remains a standard-bearing SUV, though oddly, it's far better with a straight-six than the V-8.

2022 range rover lwb se

It's hard to know where to start with the new Range Rover. After all, this is only the 5th all-new one in more than 50 years. This is a big deal.

The new Range Rover continues a march upmarket that began shortly after the original arrived—it doesn't really compete with, say, the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS so much as it does the S-Class and 7-Series. Especially now, given Jaguar Land Rover has killed the Jag XJ sedan. And with the top-level SV model, the Range Rover competes with more niche offerings like the Bentley Bentayga and Aston Martin DBX.

Land Rover invited us to Northern California to sample three new Range Rovers—a short-wheelbase V-8 First Edition, a long-wheelbase six-cylinder, and an SV.

2024 range rover

Many will focus on the Range Rover’s gorgeous new exterior and plush interior, though those shouldn't take the spotlight away from the SUV’s many mechanical changes. Unlike the last Range Rover, the new platform incorporates more high strength steel to create a more rigid structure, and in addition to height-adjustable air springs, there's also new adaptive dampers, a 48-volt active anti-roll system, and rear-wheel steering. And though the vast majority of Range Rovers won't ever see an unpaved road, the SUV still has off-road chops, thanks to locking center and rear differentials, a low-range gearbox, and Land Rover's Active Terrain Response system, which uses the car's electronics to maximize available traction.

The base engine is JLR's mild-hybrid 3.0-liter straight-six, here making 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. A BMW-sourced V-8 is optional. JLR is winding down production of its long-running V-8, so it's turned to BMW for a supply of 4.4-liter twin-turbo units. Though it makes the same 523 hp and 553 lb-ft as it does in many BMW applications, Land Rover says its engine is calibrated its own specifications. The V-8 also has an intake mounted higher up than its BMW equivalent and a new oil sump to increase off-road performance. Both engines are paired with ZF's ubiquitous eight-speed automatic, while a plug-in hybrid six-cylinder is on its way, and an all-electric version set for 2024.

2022 range rover first edition

It's an excellent car… though there's a big problem with V-8 versions. Now, there's nothing wrong with the V-8 itself. It's an excellent engine, smooth, responsive, with broad, linear power delivery, and it has a perfect partner in the eight-speed auto. It's just that the Range Rover feels uncomfortable with the larger engine.

A vehicle's ride characteristics are best explained by two terms: Primary ride is how it handles itself through undulations or corners, while secondary ride describes how it deals with smaller surface imperfections like potholes, cracks, bumps, and broken road surfaces. The primary ride of all the new Range Rovers on hand was superb. Especially in long-wheelbase form, the Range Rover floats up and down the road in a wonderfully smooth manner. It's relaxing to experience the way the car makes short work of the dips, crests and cambers of a road.

But in the V-8 cars, the secondary ride felt unacceptably harsh. The Range Rover made every road imperfection very well known, and considering that these things will be driven largely in places with poorly maintained roads—you know, New York, Los Angeles, the entirety of Great Britain—this feels like a huge misstep. Surely the wheels take a large part of the blame as all the testers were fit on 23s, though the secondary ride harshness was pretty much nonexistent in the six-cylinder cars. When asked about this discrepancy, a Land Rover spokesperson forwarded this response from the product team: "Yes, the V-8 is definitely heavier and the weight [is] in the front. Yes, [it's] noticeable to us as well when we drive." Per Land Rover's figures, a V-8 Range Rover is 290 pounds heavier than an I-6 model.

2022 range rover se lwb

Though you sacrifice outright pace with the straight-six, it's still a fabulous engine, with more than enough grunt to move the 5240-pound rig. This JLR-designed unit is quite high-tech, with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that consists of an integrated starter-generator and an electric compressor that spools up almost instantly before a twin-scroll turbocharger takes over at higher revs. The refinement is excellent. Never is a vibration allowed into the cabin—just a pleasant, but distant, straight-six sound.

Nick Collins, JLR's head engineer, worked for Ford in a previous life where, among many other things, he was responsible for the first two generations of Fiesta ST. That makes him one of us, and he's a big part of why the new Range Rover is surprisingly engaging to drive. The combination of active anti-roll bars and rear-wheel steering give the impression of a much smaller, lower vehicle. You can hustle the Range Rover easily, and it's legitimately fun, if partly for the incongruousness of the experience—"Try doing that in an Escalade," Collins says.

2024 range rover land rover

The steering is a particular highlight, with perfect calibration providing a meaningful connection between your hands and the front wheels. Body control is excellent, and even when put in Dynamic mode, the car is still very comfortable (excepting the secondary-ride issues of V-8 cars). The only issue that comes up when hustling the Range Rover is the brake pedal. While the brakes themselves seem up to the task of ripping up and down mountain roads, the pedal offers very little in the way of feel. It's fine when driving normally, but in heavy braking scenarios, when you need the pedal to communicate the most, the absence of feedback is a little spooky.

Does that matter to Range Rover buyers? Probably not. Will any of them hustle their cars? Maybe someone who wants to mess with hot-hatch drivers on Welsh B-Roads, but most owners will drive Range Rovers sedately around town, country, and interstate. The rig is excellent in these settings too, the sort of car that makes you want to hold the steering wheel with fingertips and try to be as smooth as possible. You could cover large swaths of this huge country with utter ease, especially if your Range Rover has massage seats.

2022 range rover

The interior is gorgeous. There's plush leather pretty much everywhere—though a leather-free interior is available on some trims—and the matte wood trim is artfully finished. Naturally, you get JLR's latest infotainment system, which is very user friendly and looks fabulous on the large floating touch screen. Land Rover also got rid of the secondary lower touch screen for HVAC controls, which is welcome, as that felt like technology simply for the sake of itself. The digital gauge cluster is slick too, and far easier to configure than previous JLR setups. And perhaps most importantly, you get that "command" driving position that's sold so many Range Rovers before this. The view is generally excellent, though the B-Pillars are quite thick, creating occasional blind spots when pulling out at a junction. I'm only 5' 7", yet even with the seat set to its lowest position, you can see the hood in its entirety. As this is JLR's flagship, there are rear seat setups easily as fancy as those offered in big luxury sedans. The Jaguar XJ may be gone, but JLR is not lacking in the “coddling executives” department.

My biggest gripe with the interior is that as you climb up the range—no pun intended—the quality doesn't seem to match the price. At least from the driver's seat, the cabin in the SE LWB six-cylinder is damn near as nice as the First Edition's, with the only apparent exceptions being the full executive rear seating setup and a heated steering wheel, both of which are available as options on the lower trim, plus a leather headliner, which isn't. The SV testers were all equipped with an even fancier rear seat setup, with individual chairs rather than a bench, a gorgeous center console, and a fold-out tray table. Great, but that package costs nearly $20,000.

2022 range rover sv

I have a hard time seeing the appeal of the SV beyond being a status symbol. It costs nearly $50,000 more than a First Edition model, and what you really get is some (admittedly neat) trim features, including ceramic controls like those you find on high-end watches. To drive, it is totally identical to the First Edition, and thus, not as sweet as the six-cylinder SE. Plus, the example I drove had noticeable leather-on leather squeaks and rattles in addition to the poor secondary ride. It's an early build example, and the Meridian Surround Sound System can drown out a lot of bad noise, but it's not what you'd expect from a car that costs nearly $220,000. Land Rover probably won't be thrilled with my saying that the cheapest Range Rover tester it provided was by far the best, though I suspect it won't matter much. The upper spec cars will appeal to those who just want what appears to be the best.

2022 range rover first edition

We took the SE LWB up some muddy trails that likely wouldn't be too much of a challenge for a Subaru Outback, and it made quick work of them, even on road-biased 285/40R23 Pirelli Scorpion Verde tires. I'm sure the Range Rover is still the most capable large luxury 4x4, and I can't wait to verify that for certain.

I'm still not sold on those 23-inch wheels, though they do look amazing. Collins says they're his pick—unusual, given engineers often favor smaller wheels than designers—and argues that because the tires maintain the aspect ratio of the old Range Rover's 22-inch tires, ride quality doesn't suffer. But, the whole package is surely heavier, and that has an effect. Twenty-twos would surely pack enough visual punch and cut down on unsprung mass.

So, the new Range Rover is generally excellent, as long as there's a six-cylinder under the hood. Collins says his favorite current engine is the straight-six diesel we don't get in the U.S., and says the soon-arriving plug-in hybrid has a big appeal. The PHEV combines the inline-six with a 141-hp electric motor powered by a 38.2-kWh lithium-ion battery integrated in the floor. It can cruise on electric power only for an estimated 62 miles. Collins says the best Range Rover will be the full-electric version, which will offer smooth, quiet motoring.

2022 range rover se lwb

Smart money should buy the six-cylinder SE, one of the finest luxury SUVs on sale today. It might not be the flashiest, but you'll feel good knowing that you bought the best version of the car as it exists today. That you only really need the base model speaks to the fundamental excellence of the new Range Rover.

We look forward to driving more iterations of the Range Rover. Perhaps the V-8 on its standard 21-inch wheels is far more comfortable, The last Range Rover PHEV was a compromised thing, with a four-cylinder engine and trunk space taken up by batteries, but this one seems to have righted those wrongs. The EV just seems plain cool. In time, we'll have a more complete verdict on this fifth-generation Range Rover, though all we can say for now is that it's an excellent luxury 4x4… if you stick with the base model.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover a Good SUV?

The new Range Rover is a fantastic luxury SUV in just about every measure. The Range Rover has a stunning interior with top-notch materials, slick tech features and thronelike seats. It glides confidently over rough pavement and along winding roads, yet it can navigate incredibly harsh off-road terrain and tow more than 7,000 pounds. This big Rover offers a lineup of punchy, fuel-efficient engines, and it can shuttle up to seven passengers (plus all their stuff) around in whisper-quiet comfort. It's one of those rare vehicles that's as capable as it is luxurious.

Of course, there are trade-offs, and the biggest is its outsized price. The new Range Rover starts at roughly $105,000, and highly optioned models can eclipse $200,000.

Should I Buy the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover?

The well-rounded 2023 Range Rover deserves a look if you're shopping for a luxury large SUV , provided you have adequate funds. If you're looking to spend a bit less, check out the Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade . Though not quite as posh, both SUVs provide significantly more cargo space as well as true hands-free driving assistance, which is one of the few features that the Range Rover lacks.

2022 vs. 2023 Land Rover Range Rover: What's the Difference?

The Range Rover SUV is all-new for the 2023 model year. Though it might not look different at first glance, Land Rover says that's partly by design. The exterior styling features cleaner lines and smoother flanks, thanks in part to door handles that retract flush with the body. The simplified infotainment system now consists of a single touch screen instead of two. And, for the first time, the Range Rover is available with third-row seats and all-wheel steering.

The engine lineup has received a thorough refresh as well and includes a new plug-in-hybrid variant and a BMW-sourced V8, in addition to the previous model's inline-six. Land Rover has announced that an all-electric Range Rover is slated to arrive for 2024.

How Much is a 2023 Land Rover Range Rover?

The 2023 Range Rover has a base MSRP of $104,500, which is among the highest starting prices of any luxury SUV. Features include leather upholstery, power-retractable door handles, rain-sensing windshield wipers and a surround-view camera system. The high-end SV trim retails for $193,100, and it can be optioned past $240,000. Along with a V8 engine, standard features on the SV include unique interior and exterior accents, massaging second-row seats and the Tailgate Event Suite package, which adds amenities for the cargo area.

Which Is the Best Land Rover Range Rover Model to Buy?

We recommend the base trim for its wide array of configurations and significantly lower price tag. It's available with either wheelbase option, two- and three-row layouts and all available powertrains. It also comes with numerous safety and convenience features, like HD Radio, navigation, forward automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist. If you want to customize your Range Rover, there are plenty of available features.

2023 Land Rover Range Rover Versus the Competition

Land rover range rover vs. mercedes-benz gls.

You really can't go wrong with the Range Rover or its Mercedes GLS rival. Both of these luxury large SUVs have similarly potent engine lineups, comparable towing ability, lots of standard tech and safety features and gorgeous interiors. Both also have slick infotainment systems that require a bit of practice to master. Still, there are differences. The GLS comes standard in a seven-seat layout, and its base price is about $27,000 less than the Range Rover's. On the other hand, the Range Rover offers superior off-road capabilities and provides more cargo space in its long-wheelbase layout.

Land Rover Range Rover vs. BMW X7

The BMW X7 is another great option in the luxury large SUV segment . Like the Range Rover, the X7 has a comfy cabin and vast cargo area, above-average fuel economy, lots of safety and convenience features and polished driving dynamics. Both even share the same optional V8 engine, and it's a powerhouse. However, the X7 has a considerably lower starting price than the Range Rover, it offers seven seats as standard, and it has an easier-to-use infotainment system. That said, the Range Rover has a swankier cabin and greater off-road chops.

Range Rover Interior: Deluxe and Decluttered

2023 range rover interior quality.

The cabin of the new Range Rover is nothing short of stunning. Its overall appearance is elegant and unfussy with clean lines and deliberate execution. It looks reserved and minimalist but not Tesla-stark. Build quality is next level, and just about everything feels premium and substantial, from the many leather-wrapped surfaces to the crisp wood and aluminum accents. Even back-seat passengers are treated to finely trimmed accommodations, which isn't always a given. Better still, the Range Rover's interior remains whisper-quiet, even at highway speeds.

2023 Range Rover Infotainment, Bluetooth and Navigation

The Range Rover's infotainment system has a similarly pared-down aesthetic. The 13.1-inch touch screen is sleek and responsive, and it features the brand's Pivi Pro software with haptic feedback (the screen surface vibrates subtly when touched). It's a major improvement over Land Rover's previous systems, though some functions are still tucked away in submenus, which can complicate otherwise simple tasks. The climate controls are refreshingly simple, and they consist of two knobs and a handful of touch points beneath the main display.

Behind the steering wheel sits an intuitive digital instrument cluster with crisp graphics. It can be reconfigured in a number of ways – including a helpful navigation view – using buttons on the steering wheel. However, the function of each button changes with the menu, which reduces clutter but takes time to get accustomed to.

Upper trims feature additional displays for back-seat passengers, including a touch screen in the rear center armrest (or console when equipped) and two displays perched on the back of the front seats.

  • Standard infotainment features: a 13.1-inch touch screen, navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, wireless device charging, Bluetooth, multiple USB ports, a 14-speaker stereo, HD Radio, satellite radio and a Wi-Fi hot spot
  • Available infotainment features: an 8-inch touch screen in the rear center armrest, a rear-seat entertainment system with two 11.4-inch displays, additional wireless device charging and 18- and 34-speaker sound systems
  • Additional standard features: a 13.7-inch digital instrument cluster, keyless entry, power soft-closing doors, tri-zone automatic climate control and a panoramic sunroof
  • Other available features: quad-zone automatic climate control, refrigerated front and rear center consoles, a fold-out tray table and rear sunshades

For more information, read What Is Apple CarPlay? ,  What Is Android Auto?  and What Is Amazon Alexa Auto?

2023 Range Rover Cargo Space

The standard Range Rover has 40.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats and 83.5 cubic feet with these seats folded flat. The available long-wheelbase model increases the total cargo capacity to 92.8 cubic feet with all rear seats folded. That's plenty of space for hauling furniture, large boxes and camping gear, though this carrying capacity isn't as vast as what you’ll find in behemoths like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator .

The rear liftgate opens in two sections, and the lower portion is helpful for stopping loose items from rolling out when parked on an incline. It also makes for a handy seat when tailgating at an event, and Land Rover offers an upgrade package – which adds a backrest, cushions and cup holders – to this area for this exact purpose.

How Many People Does the 2023 Range Rover Seat?

The 2023 Range Rover SUV is available in five- and seven-seat configurations. There's also a limolike four-seat layout with a rear center console, minifridge and fold-out tray table, but it's reserved for the top trim at a cost of roughly $240,000. Leather upholstery is standard, as are heated first-, second- and third-row seats (when equipped). Options include cloth upholstery, ventilated and massaging first- and second-row seats and a heated steering wheel.

The Range Rover's front seats are wonderfully cushioned and supportive, and the wide breadth of seating adjustments makes it easy to find a comfy driving position with a commanding view of the road. The second-row seats are similarly comfortable, especially in models with the Executive Class package, which adds leg rests and additional levels of adjustment. Taller occupants should find plenty of headroom and legroom in the first and second rows.

The second row's tip-and-slide function affords relatively easy access to the third row, and there's sufficient space back there for smaller adults to sit in comfort, though kids will find those seats far more accommodating.

2023 Range Rover and Child Car Seats

The two-row Range Rover has two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors for the rear seats, while the three-row model has four complete sets.

Range Rover Performance: Ultimate All-Rounder

2023 range rover engine.

The 2023 Range Rover is available with three powertrain options: P400, P440e and P530. The P400 engine is a 395-horsepower 3.0-liter straight-six engine, and it's fitted with a turbocharger, electric supercharger and 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The P440e is a 434-horsepower plug-in hybrid, and it pairs a version of that six-cylinder engine with an electric motor. Lastly, the P530 is a 523-horsepower twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine. Each is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

There isn't a bad choice among the bunch. The standard P400 inline-six is punchy and refined, and it does an excellent job of shuttling the hefty Range Rover around town and up to highway speeds. The dash from zero to 60 mph takes just under six seconds. It delivers strong passing power as well, and it pairs nicely with the eight-speed transmission, which fires off prompt and seamless gear changes. All in all, this setup is more than potent enough for most drivers' needs.

The P440e setup yields a similar driving experience, although it adds the ability to scoot around silently using battery power alone. The P530 engine is a rather pricey upgrade, but it enables hot-rod agility. This V8 rockets the SUV up to speed with authority: Zero to 60 mph takes just 4.5 seconds. Plus, it pulls a heavy trailer with ease.

2023 Range Rover Gas Mileage

The new Range Rover is by no means thrifty at the gas pump, but it does get above-average fuel economy for a luxury large SUV . Models with the mild-hybrid P400 powertrain return an EPA-estimated 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, while models with the V8 engine get 16/21 mpg city/highway.

At the time of writing, EPA estimates aren't available for the P440e plug-in hybrid (PHEV), but Land Rover claims it will provide an all-electric driving range of 48 miles on a full charge. Recharging this model's 38-kWh battery pack takes about five hours using a 240-volt outlet or a Level 2 public charging station. Plugging in at a DC Fast Charging station can recoup an 80% charge in less than an hour.

2023 Range Rover Ride and Handling

The redesigned Range Rover drives remarkably well for a nearly 3-ton SUV, and that's largely due to its high-tech chassis, which includes an adaptive air suspension, electronic antiroll bars and four-wheel steering. The big Rangie maneuvers around twists and turns with impressive stability and composure, even at higher speeds. The steering is appropriately light and precise, and it's a fairly easy SUV to park in tight areas, thanks to rear wheels that can turn opposite of those in front. The brakes provide assuring stopping power as well.

A supple ride continues to be a Range Rover hallmark. The air suspension helps it glide smoothly over bumps and dips in the pavement and muffles the impacts of potholes, especially in models shod with the standard 21-inch wheels. The ride quality is noticeably busier with the available 22- and 23-inch wheels, but it's by no means harsh.

2023 Range Rover Off-Road Performance

The posh and pricey Range Rover can handle harsh terrain should you choose to pilot it over boulders or through marshy trails. The air suspension articulates nicely over uneven surfaces, and it boasts more than 11 inches of ground clearance in its highest setting. The surround-view camera system is a boon for spotting (and avoiding) rocks and other obstacles on the trail, and the Range Rover's four-wheel steering allows it to seemingly pivot around tight turns.

Other helpful equipment includes a two-speed transfer case with high- and low-range gearing, a low-speed cruise control system and Terrain Response 2 (terrain-based traction control modes). The Range Rover's biggest limitation off road is its low-profile tires. Taller tire sidewalls would make a big difference.

2023 Range Rover Towing Capacity

The Range Rover's tow rating largely depends on engine choice, though all models are quite capable of lugging heavy trailers. The Range Rover can tow up to 7,716 pounds when paired with the mild-hybrid six-cylinder engine (P400). This towing capacity increases to 8,200 pounds for V8 models (P530), but it dips to 5,511 pounds for the plug-in hybrid (P440e).

Why You Can Trust Our Reviews

U.S. News & World Report has been ranking the best cars, trucks and SUVs since 2007, and our staff has more than 75 years of combined experience in the auto industry.

This 2023 Range Rover review combines 11 professional reviews with concrete data like performance specs and fuel economy estimates. Check out excerpts from some of the reviews that drive our rankings and analysis.

  • "For now, the new Range Rover offers a familiar experience, and also radiates a huge amount of confidence—which, on first impression, seems entirely justified. Its predecessor was still selling strongly as it approached retirement and was never bettered by any of its blue-blooded imitators on anything except perceived poshness. The new one seems to be better in every significant way." -- Autoweek
  • "The brilliance and style of the new Range Rover is apparent even at the SE level with the base P400 powertrain. That's what really moves the Range Rover up the consideration list, along with the new three-row configuration and useful chassis changes that not only make it more livable every day, they also set the stage for relevant plug-in models in the very near future. Get out of the way, Range Rover is coming on through." -- Car and Driver
  • "The Range Rover matches or surpasses the competition when it comes to interior opulence, and it has power to spare and surprising handling chops, but some buyers might find it lacking in more advanced technologies and third-row space." -- Cars.com

2023 Land Rover Range Rover review: Our expert's take

The Range Rover, Land Rover’s flagship SUV, was redesigned for 2022 with quicker acceleration at the top end, new architecture to support the SUV’s off-road pursuits and a first-ever three-row interior. Land Rover promised that a new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle would follow the arrival of the gas-powered SUV, and the Range Rover extended-range PHEV is now available for ordering. Land Rover also revealed more details on the SUV’s all-electric range and charging capability.

Longer Range

land rover range rover 2022 09 bronze dynamic exterior front angle suv scaled jpg

The 2023 Range Rover PHEV gets a combined 434 horsepower from its hybrid powertrain (a six-cylinder engine and a 105-kilowatt electric motor, the latter powered by a 38.2-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery). Although it has not yet been rated by the EPA, Land Rover estimates that the PHEV will get 48 miles of all-electric range; that’s less than Land Rover’s initial estimates but up considerably over the current 2021 Land Rover PHEV, which gets an EPA-rated 19 miles. Following the PHEV, an all-electric Range Rover is expected to debut in 2024, but details on power and range have not yet been revealed.

Fast-Charging Capability

land rover range rover 2022 07 charging cable charging station exterior front angle red suv jpg

In addition to the improved range, the 2023 Range Rover PHEV benefits from 50-kW DC fast charging . A feature usually relegated to fully electric cars, DC capability allows drivers to use public charging stations; according to Land Rover, the new Range Rover PHEV can charge 80% of its battery in under an hour. The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, one of the few other PHEVs with DC fast-charging capability, can charge 80% of range in 25 minutes — that range is just 24 miles.

Versus the Competition

img656872993 1525208005490 jpg

The Range Rover PHEV competes among a small group of luxury plug-in hybrid SUVs, like the BMW X5 xDrive45e, Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid and Volvo XC90 Recharge. While the extended-range model offers the highest all-electric range among competitors, it also comes with the highest price tag. The XC90 Recharge gets an EPA-rated 18 miles of all-electric range and starts at $65,895 (all prices include destination charges), and the Cayenne E-Hybrid is EPA-rated for 17 miles of all-electric range and starts at $84,650. The X5 xDrive45e comes closest to Land Rover, with an EPA-rated 31-mile all-electric range and starts at $64,695.

Pricing and Release Date

The Range Rover P440e extended-range PHEV is available to order on Land Rover’s website and starts at $106,250.

The 2023 Range Rover Sport

The most popular Range Rover in the America just got a makeover.

The third generation in the Sport series arrived on Tuesday, and at first blush, it looks to be the taut, muscular and modern SUV that Range Rover loyalists would expect. The model’s sleek body, which has been refined for this edition, is matched by performance specs that should get even seasoned Range Rover drivers excited.

For 2023, the Sport is being offered in four trim levels: a mild-hybrid SE and SE Dynamic, a plug-in hybrid Autobiography, and the gas-powered First Edition. The V-8 twin-turbo engine in that last one will get you a whopping 523 hp and allow acceleration from zero to 60 in just 4.3 seconds. But the other models aren’t too shabby either. The two SEs provide either 355 or 395 horses, according to Car and Driver , while the Autobiography can produce 434 hp. Additionally, the plug-in hybrid is able to go from zero to 60 in 5.5 seconds and has an estimated range of 48 miles.

All of the 2023 editions offer rear-axle steering that can turn the back wheels up to 7.3 degrees, as well as adaptive off-road cruise control, both of which should serve to make the SUV easier to maneuver.

The back of the 2023 Range Rover Sport

The rear features a sculpted tailgate.  Land Rover

Outside, the legendary silhouette remains, of course. The minimalist grille anchors the front fascia, with clean lines that flow back to a sculpted tailgate. The exterior differs from that of its predecessors in some pretty major ways, though. The overhangs are shorter in front and longer in back, and both the headlights and grille openings are slimmer. While 21-inch rims are standard, the Sport can come with larger, 23-inch versions. All in all, the SUV has a slightly more elegant appearance, helped along by added features such as flush-mounted door handles, Satin Grey wheels, and Satin Burnished Copper finishes.

The inside of the 2023 Range Rover Sport

The cabin has a 13-inch touchscreen to control infotainment options.  Land Rover

Inside, meanwhile, the cabin has a cockpit-like feel, allowing for a driving perch that’s both dynamic and plush (especially when you factor in the heated and massaging front seats). The Sport’s platform is now 35 percent stiffer and its wheelbase was extended by three inches, providing about an inch of extra legroom in the rear seats. Lightweight Ultrafabrics can be swapped for Windsor or soft semi-aniline leather options, all of which pair nicely with the Moonlight Chrome finishes. And the technology is no slouch, either: The Meridian sound system is the most advanced in any Range Rover Sport; active noise cancellation allows you to focus on what you most want to hear; and a 13-inch touchscreen on the dash provides control at the tip of a finger.

“The exceptional new Range Rover Sport sets new standards as the ultimate sporting luxury SUV,” Thierry Bolloré, the CEO of Jaguar Land Rover , said in a statement. “It is the latest embodiment of our vision to create the world’s most desirable modern luxury vehicles, effortlessly blending new levels of sustainability with the signature qualities that have made Range Rover Sport so popular.”

If all of this gets your gears turning, the third-gen Range Rover Sport is available to order now, starting at $83,000. An all-electric version will become available in 2024.

2023 Land Rover Range Rover Review

range rover voyager 2023

  • Super smooth ride
  • Wealth of interior and exterior options for customizing
  • Front seats are very comfortable
  • Regal on-road presence
  • Some controls are confusing to operate or locate on screen
  • Available third-row seating is tight for a big luxury SUV
  • Feels bulky and ungainly around corners

What's new

  • New plug-in hybrid model debuts with an estimated 48 miles of electric range
  • New top-level SV trim offers even more features and customization
  • First Edition trim no longer available
  • Part of the fifth Range Rover generation introduced for 2022

Land Rover's Range Rover has evolved from the two-door utility vehicle it was more than 50 years ago into the flagship large luxury SUV that we know today. Its most recent iteration debuted just last year and brought about all-new tech, improved powertrains and an even more premium interior than before. The clean and handsome exterior design is new, too, though you'd be forgiven for mistaking it for the old model. Arguably the biggest news was the available third row, a first for the Range Rover.

Cost to Drive

For 2023, Land Rover has brought back the plug-in hybrid powertrain that was last seen in 2021. This updated version makes more power and provides a Land Rover-estimated 48 miles of electric range. That's more than twice as much than the last plug-in Range Rover. The plug-in hybrid features both a gasoline engine and an electric motor, powered by a small battery pack that can be plugged in at EV chargers. Elsewhere, Land Rover has also dropped the First Edition trim for 2023, though many of its features can be had on other Range Rover trims, and introduced a new top-level SV trim.

There are plenty of competitors in this segment, especially now that the Range Rover has a third row on offer. The Mercedes-Benz GLS and BMW X7 offer a lot of the same features and many of the premium appointments you'll find on the Range Rover, and both start for significantly less money. You could also look at traditional truck-based SUVs such as the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator and Jeep Grand Wagoneer. They provide more passenger and cargo space (two of the Range Rover's weakest areas), but none offer the premium feel you get with the Range Rover. What's the best choice? Read our test team's Expert Rating below for our full evaluation of the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover.

Performance

Fuel economy, which range rover does edmunds recommend, land rover range rover models.

Three powertrains are available:

  • P400: turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder (395 horsepower, 406 lb-ft of torque)
  • P530: turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 (523 hp, 553 lb-ft)
  • P440e: turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder and plug-in hybrid system (434 hp and 457 lb-ft; estimated 48 miles of electric range)

No matter what's under the hood, the Range Rover comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

SE The SE is the entry-level trim and is available with any of the three powertrains. The SE is also only available with the standard wheelbase. Standard feature highlights include:

  • 21-inch alloy wheels
  • Terrain Response 2 (Range Rover's advanced off-road driver assist system)
  • Four-wheel steering (enhances nimbleness and agility when turning)
  • Air suspension (can raise or lower the ride height of the vehicle)
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Hands-free tailgate
  • Power-adjustable steering wheel
  • Tri-zone automatic climate control
  • Heated front and rear seats
  • Meridian audio system
  • 13.1-inch touchscreen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration (with wireless connectivity)
  • Wireless charging pad
  • Configurable ambient lighting

Every model in the Range Rover lineup also has these advanced driver assist features:

  • Forward collision mitigation (warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)
  • Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning (alerts you if a vehicle is in your blind spot during a lane change or while in reverse)
  • Adaptive cruise control (adjusts speed to maintain a constant distance between the vehicle and the car in front)
  • Lane keeping system (makes minor steering corrections to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane)
  • Front and rear parking sensors (alert you to obstacles that may not be visible in front of or behind the vehicle when parking)
  • 360-degree camera system (gives you a top-down view of the Range Rover and its surroundings for tight parking situations)

Autobiography The Autobiography trim is available in either the standard or long wheelbase. It also adds:

  • Standard V8 power
  • 22-inch wheels
  • Sound-reducing front and side window glass
  • Digital rearview mirror (allows you to see out the back even with a fully loaded cargo area)
  • Air purification system
  • Four-zone climate control
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Ventilated front seats with massage
  • Ventilated rear seats
  • Upgraded leather upholstery
  • Power rear sunshades
  • 35-speaker Meridian premium audio system
  • Rear-seat entertainment system
  • Front console refrigerator
  • Head-up display (displays important information in your sight line on the windshield)
  • Automated parking system (steers into a parking spot with little or no driver intervention)

SV The SV is the range-topping Range Rover. It includes all of the Autobiography's standard features but ups the luxury feel with things like:

  • Unique 22-inch wheels
  • Special interior and exterior trim details
  • Upgraded rear-seat entertainment system
  • Power-assisted closing doors (late availability)

Many of the features on upper trim levels can be added to lower models. Other items depending on the trim include:

  • Synthetic suede/premium cloth combination upholstery
  • Shadow Exterior Pack with black-painted exterior trim elements
  • Black- or bronze-painted contrast roof
  • Automated reverse steering while towing a trailer
  • Tow hitch receiver
  • Heated windshield

The SV trim can also be customized to a high degree with specialized interior colors and rear seating arrangements.

Land Rover Range Rover vs. Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

The Mercedes-Benz GLS is the German automaker's largest (but not most expensive) SUV. It's significantly less expensive than the Range Rover and offers standard seating for seven. We prefer the Mercedes' in-car tech, but the Range Rover offers more space, especially for second-row passengers. The Range Rover also has a slightly more premium feel than the already excellent GLS.

Land Rover Range Rover vs. BMW X7

BMW just updated the X7 with new styling inside and out, updated in-car tech and more. Like its rivals, the X7 is available with six- and eight-cylinder engines, lots of standard driver aids, and a long list of optional creature comforts. We like the X7's standard three rows of seating, though the second row isn't as spacious as the Range Rover's. The BMW is less expensive than the Land Rover but doesn't feel quite as premium inside.

Land Rover Range Rover vs. Cadillac Escalade

The Escalade is arguably the most iconic American luxury SUV, and for good reason. The latest version is better than ever, with powerful engines, solid in-car tech, and a sizable interior with plenty of space for people or cargo. Fuel economy isn't as good as the Land Rover's, but that's the price for standard V8 power. The interior isn't as luxurious either, though Cadillac counters with lower pricing.

2023 land rover range rover first impressions.

range rover voyager 2023

The 2022 model year was a bit of a mess for Land Rover's most luxurious and expensive SUV. Depending on when you last stepped foot into your local dealership, you were either saddled with the previous-generation Range Rover — unremarkable, except for the awesome available supercharged V8 — or the brand-spanking-new Range Rover with an overhauled interior and improved technology interface. There's no such confusion with the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover , as the old model is kicked to the curb for good. Land Rover is also introducing a brand-new powertrain to supplement the existing turbocharged mild hybrid inline-six and turbocharged 4.4-liter V8.

A plug-in hybrid joins the lineup this year, and we can already tell it has more potential than the previous Range Rover PHEV last sold in 2021. That plug-in was primarily driven by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that developed nearly 400 horsepower. Though it had solid specs on paper, the powertrain's lurches and inconsistent power delivery felt unbecoming of a $100,000-plus luxury SUV. And worse, the hybrid earned lower fuel economy estimates than the standard six-cylinder model.

The PHEV variant of the new Range Rover swaps out the four-banger for an inline-six. Output is up to a robust 434 horsepower, though the torque output at 405 lb-ft is considerably less than the four-cylinder's 472 lb-ft. However, Land Rover says the Range Rover PHEV — also known as the P440e — should be able to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, which would roughly match the old four-cylinder's sprint time. The battery pack is also significantly larger than last time around, growing from 13.1 kWh of usable capacity to 31.8 kWh. All-electric range rises accordingly from the previous model's estimate of 19 miles to a Land Rover-estimated 48 miles for the new Range Rover PHEV.

Look for the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover PHEV to arrive on dealer lots later this year, with a starting price of $106,250.

We have high hopes that this version of the Range Rover PHEV will be more successful than its predecessor. With more power, a larger battery pack and the smoothness delivered by the six-cylinder engine, the PHEV could be the powertrain to get.
