13 Tips for Finding Cheap Cruise Deals

The best cruise deals aren’t as hard to find as you might think. But digging for cheap cruises can mean the difference between unearthing that low fare or compromising on price and itinerary, so you need to know where to look -- even if you use your own trusted cruise travel agent .

Let us share some of our favorite tips on how to get cheap cruises. While some may sound trite, others may catch you by surprise.

1. Don’t Wait for Last-Minute Cruise Deals on High-Season Sailings

Last-minute cheap cruise deals are a tough find in the most popular seasons and routes, especially if you want your pick of cabins. Summer travel and school holiday periods book up early, particularly for cabins that sleep three or more and are in demand by families traveling together.

If you have a very specific cruise itinerary and ship in mind, we recommend booking early. The choicest digs on popular new ships will sell quickly, pushing fares higher the longer you wait. New ship sailings are also incredibly popular well in advance.

Interested in an exotic cruise? For some lines and sailings, you can forget it unless you book months -- or a year -- in advance. This is particularly true for bucket-list voyages to places like Antarctica , the Galapagos Islands and world cruises -- some of which can sell out in a single day. The same rules apply for theme cruises .

Luxury cruises also offer their best prices early. Oceania and Regent Seven Seas usually increase cruise areas every three months. In other words, the lowest rates will disappear if you wait.

It's also best to book river cruises early. Not only are choice itineraries likely to sell out as the sail date draws closer, but the price is also likely to jump, not drop.

2. Hunt Down Shoulder Season and Repositioning Cruise Deals

Repositioning cruise deals, whether transatlantic or something less dramatic like ships moving into and out of Alaska, are some of the lowest cost per night/per person deals available.

The second best deals are often those sailing on dates just outside the peak seasons of popular destinations. This might mean picking April or late September as the month to visit Alaska, March as your best bet to sail the Mediterranean and October for your Caribbean cruise -- before or after the summer swell of family vacations. In addition to low prices, you'll encounter fewer crowds.

On the flip side, the weather might not be as ideal for sightseeing.

3. Use Cruise Critic's Deal Score to Know When a Deal is Really a Deal

Don't have the time to obsessively watch cruise pricing? Cruise Critic rounds up deals across tons of major cruise lines and popular destinations, as well as last-minute cruise deals. These are accompanied by a Deal Score, which uses pricing data along with onboard credits, flight discounts, food and drink package deals and more.

It's easy to use: The higher the Deal Score , the better the deal.

But if you'd prefer to go your own way on finding a deal, do some research on typical rates for the cruise you have in mind, and check back frequently (we mean daily, at least) to see if the fare has dropped.

See what promotions each cruise line is offering and contact your preferred travel agent to see what pricing and promotional specials they're running.

4. Bundle Up for the Best Cruise Deals

Some of the best cruise deals aren’t only about getting the bottom dollar cruise fare. A number of cruise lines offer booking promotions that include your choice of perks, such as free specialty dining, tips, Wi-Fi and drink packages.

Nearly every mainstream cruise line offers special deals that let you save on the total cost of your cruise vacation.

In addition, bundling multiple vacation elements together can help you save on individual costs. Luxury and river lines sometimes offer promotions that will include economy-class airfare, or a pre-cruise hotel stay at the price of your upscale cruise.

5. Ask for a Price Drop Credit When Cruise Fares Change

If the cruise fare changes after you've booked but before you've made your final payment, it's possible to take advantage of the lower rate. Enlist the help of a travel agent who can monitor pricing after you've booked, and who can request a re-fare to the lower rate.

When the fare plummets, you can request a rate change, cancel, and rebook at the lower rate or request the difference in onboard credit. What you're entitled to varies by cruise line, but it all leads to more money in your pocket.

Note that some lines may have non-refundable deposit policies; always read the fine print before deciding to pull the trigger and cancel and rebook.

6. Look at Last-Minute Cruise Deals (Yes, We Saw #1 Above)

While waiting until the last minute to book a cruise won't always pay off for your wallet, that's not always the case. For starters, check out Cruise Critic’s last-minute cruise deals , which feature bargains on a variety of sailings leaving within 90 days.

In general, there are always plenty of Caribbean cruise deals, as well as some for the Mediterranean. For those who can be spontaneous, flexibility can pay off.

Of course, booking last-minute airfare might wipe out any savings. Plus, you'll have a limited selection of cabin locations and dinner seatings. But if you're flexible and can drive to a cruise port -- or have plenty of frequent flier airline points to burn -- it's a great way to take a cruise without breaking the bank.

7. Explore the Benefits of Booking a Group Cruise

Booking a cruise for a group might get you the ultimate cruise deal: free berths.

For instance, book seven or more double-occupancy cabins on Norwegian Cruise Line , and for every 10 passengers booked, one passenger can cruise for free.

Keep in mind that each cruise line has its own threshold for groups. Some lines consider 10 guests (five cabins) to be a group, while others require 16 guests (eight cabins).

Group leaders can choose to spread the savings across the group or keep it all for themselves. Groups can get other perks, as well. Norwegian offers group members a choice of complimentary amenities beyond its Free at Sea promotion, such as extra onboard credit or a cocktail party for the group.

Though not as exciting as sailing for free when you book a large group cruise, small group perks are out there too.

Throughout the year, many cruise lines offer promotions that include free cruise fares for third and fourth passengers booked in the same cabin. Watch for the deals that also include those passengers in bonus offerings like drink packages or prepaid gratuities.

8. Send Cruise Deals to Your Inbox

All the cruise deals you dream about will appear in your inbox if you ask for them. You never have to miss another cheap Caribbean cruise again. Major cruise lines, such as Celebrity, Norwegian, Holland America, Princess and Royal Caribbean offer deals emails with ongoing promotions in addition to last-minute deals and short sales.

For the hardcore deal-seekers who don't want e-deals cluttering up their personal inboxes, we suggest setting up separate accounts for cruise bargain mailings. With a little extra effort, you can even sort them into folders for your favorite shopping categories like “cheap Carnival cruises” or “cheap cruises from Galveston.”

9. Always Book Using Military, Senior or Residency Deals

Military cruise deals for active and retired members of the armed services are only one means of double dipping your deals. A number of cruise lines have special programs for seniors , military personnel and even teachers that apply even to the lowest advertised fares.

For example, MSC Cruises provides discounts of up to 10 percent to active and retired military families on almost all sailings. AARP members can find exclusive senior discounts on multiple lines when booking through the AARP Travel Center Powered by Expedia .

Many lines also offer residential discounts. Here's how it works: A line's revenue stream is based on a formula that requires a certain number of bookings from various cities, states and regions.

So, if it's not getting enough bookings from one place, it'll drop the price slightly -- say, in Florida -- to entice more Floridians to book.

There's no guarantee you'll get a residential discount, but it can't hurt to mention your home city and state during the booking process, just in case. Look for options for requesting these deals about halfway through the booking process when you use the cruise lines’ websites. Even if it only saves you $50, it's still $50 in your pocket.

10. Tweet Your Way to Cheap Cruises

Just about every agent and agency -- including Cruise.com ( @cruisecom and Best Travel Deals ( @cruisedealsbtd -- is tweeting its best cruise deals.

Take it a step further by customizing a list of deal tweeters using Twitter's list function, in essence creating your own deals aggregator. For more variety, assuming you don’t mind wading through a few tweets, you can always just search for the hashtag #cruisedeals.

11. Go for Lower-Priced Guarantee Cabins on Your Cruise

Are " guarantee cabins " on cruises really deals? A cabin guarantee, which basically means you're assured to get a cabin in the category specified -- or better -- means you can't choose your exact stateroom.

And for giving up that privilege, many lines discount guaranteed cabin bookings about $50 to $100 per person off the advertised fares.

If you're prone to seasickness or sensitive to noise, you might want to reconsider the value of choosing your own cabin location so as to not end up near the elevators or riding the wave near the bow.

The biggest caveat though, is that not all guarantee cabin fares are eligible for those booking perks we told you to bundle, so ensure the value tradeoff is worth it before you commit.

12. Make the Most of Your Loyalty Points for Deals on Cruises

Frequent cruisers , like frequent fliers, can benefit from brand loyalty. Sticking with one line means earning perks like nightly cocktails in private lounges, free laundry, complimentary dinners in alternative restaurants, cabin upgrades and even free cruises once you've earned enough "credits."

Past passengers can also take advantage of special discount cruises throughout the year or be entitled to book new itineraries before the public can, often turning your cruise dreams into affordable cruise deals.

13. Leave the Cruise Deals Search to the Experts

If you don't have time for Twitter, online cruise research or gathering up a group of 20 friends, nothing beats a good travel agent to help you score deals on cruises.

Because agents often book in bulk and work directly with the lines, they have access to deals that normal cruisers don't. Cruise lines will offer their top agencies special discounts that the agents can't promote on their websites, so even if you see a good deal online, it's best to talk to a real person and ask for the best fare.

Even if savings aren't necessarily there for every sailing, agencies often offer deals with value-added perks like onboard credit or prepaid gratuities, which can amount to nearly $100 per person on a weeklong sailing.

How to snag cruise ship suites for less

Suite guests on mainstream cruise ships luxuriate in large, private spaces with upscale design, high-end amenities and expansive balconies. They enjoy free perks (think: butlers, stocked minibars and comped Wi-Fi) and access to exclusive, VIP-only restaurants and sun decks. And they always cut to the front of the line.

On the other hand, passengers who stay in cruise ship suites pay top dollar for the privilege.

We might dream of staying in a fancy suite on a big ship someday — after we win the lottery. However, there are ways to find cruise suite deals and book those high-end cabins at a discount.

Here are 13 ways you can book a cruise ship suite for less.

Book a shoulder-season sailing

One way to save money on a suite is to book your cruise during shoulder season when fewer folks travel.

In Alaska and the Mediterranean, check suite fares for early spring and September to October so you avoid the height of the season in summer. Taking a Mediterranean cruise in late fall or winter can save you even more.

For cruises in the Caribbean and the Bahamas , a good rule of thumb for bargain seekers is to avoid any dates families tend to travel, such as holiday and school vacation periods, including over the summer. You'll get a better deal on a suite in the fall and on sailings right before or after holidays, such as in early November or mid-January.

Choose a smaller suite

Minisuites or junior suites are a step down from fancier suites and therefore sell for cheaper fares.

While big suites often come with a separate living room with a dining area, smaller suites are typically one room with a sofa area plus a balcony. Still, you'll get more square footage than a standard cabin, and your accommodations might include suite perks like fluffier bathrobes and designer amenities.

Check the inclusions carefully. Some cruise lines will offer passengers in any suite access to a restaurant, lounge, sun deck or pool reserved only for suite guests. For example, Celebrity Cruises ' Sky Suites start at 251 square feet and are basically oversized, upscale balcony cabins, but they come with a king-size bed, a bathtub, fancy bedding and access to an exclusive VIP-only area of the ship called The Retreat.

On the other hand, Norwegian Cruise Line 's 249-square-foot Club Balcony Suites come with a few extra perks but do not have access to its VIP area, The Haven. If you simply want a larger cabin, options like this can be a way to get a suite for less. If you're looking for multiple rooms and perks, you might be better off upgrading to a nicer suite.

Pick an older, less popular ship

When a cruise line launches its latest and greatest ship, brand fans often flock to these vessels (and pay more) for bragging rights of being among the first on board. For those who want to save, suites on older ships, especially when recently upgraded, are often better deals than comparable cabins on the newest, flashiest ships.

A caveat is the older ships might not have as many suites, so finding space can be a challenge. This leads me to my next piece of advice.

When it comes to cruises, the nicest suites and the cheapest inside cabins tend to be booked before other rooms. With cruise fares based on supply and demand and the number of suites on any given ship limited, it pays to book your cruise as many months (or even years) ahead of your preferred sailing date as you can.

Cruise lines want you to book early, so they often throw in onboard credits for shore excursions, drinks, specialty restaurants, shopping or other onboard expenditures.

Choose a shorter cruise

A short cruise is typically more affordable than a longer one, especially if you can drive to your departure port and skip the flights and hotels. If you long for the suite life but need to stick to a budget, choose a three- or four-night sailing rather than a weeklong cruise.

The nightly rate of your upscale suite might be the same, or higher, than on a longer sailing. However, your total price for the cruise will be lower because you're paying for fewer nights, both in terms of fare and automatically added daily gratuities.

Be a cruise line loyalist

Being a brand loyalist has its benefits. If suites aren't selling quickly on a particular sailing, the cruise line will offer special discounted upgrades to the members of the line's frequent cruiser program , such as Carnival Cruise Line's VIFP (Very Important Fun Person) program.

On many cruise lines, your name will be automatically added to the loyalty program when you sail your first cruise; others require you to sign up to become a member. After that, keep an eye out for emails and newsletters highlighting discounts.

Bid for an upgrade

Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises and river cruise line Uniworld are among brands with programs where, after you book your cruise, you might be invited to bid for upgrades — just like you can for airlines like Austrian Airlines and Qantas .

In most cases, the upgrades are for one category, so your best shot at getting a suite upgrade is to book a minisuite, and your best shot at a minisuite upgrade is to book a balcony cabin. An invitation to bid is not a sure bet; it's based on supply and demand. Also, preference is given to loyalty program members.

Book cruise-only fares

Cruise lines sometimes bundle suite accommodations with air, hotel stays, limousine transfers and other add-ons, which can increase the base price considerably. Instead, only book the cruise. This will likely save you big bucks, particularly if you can use frequent traveler or credit card points for your flights and pre-cruise hotel stay.

Re-price after booking

It pays to keep track of fares for your suite accommodations even after you book because cruise prices are constantly in a state of flux. If you have not made your final payment and the price of suite accommodations drops, you can ask to have your fare updated. Call the cruise line (or your travel agent) and ask for a price adjustment.

If the price changes after you have made the final payment, do the math and see if the credit you can get (after any cancellation penalties) makes a change to the lower fare worth it or not. Cruise lines don't want you to cancel and might be willing to play ball to keep your booking — perhaps even offering the price difference in the form of an onboard credit.

Find sales that include suites

Finding a sale is the easiest way to get a deal on a suite. You can snag both discounted fares on suites and fares enhanced by value-added perks such as free gratuities, Wi-Fi and complimentary cabin upgrades, particularly during wave season , the time of year when cruise lines run some of their most competitive sales.

Traditionally, the wave season promotional period was from January through March; however, some lines are running versions of their promotions year-round. If you want to be among the first to know about such deals, consider signing up for email alerts from your preferred cruise lines.

Use a travel agent

Travel agents have a lot of knowledge and a certain amount of pull, especially those who do a lot of business with a particular cruise line. They can steer you to a cruise line with lower fares for suites on certain routes and dates and help you compare products. A connected travel agent might even be able to convince a cruise line to upgrade you to a suite.

Pick a cheaper year-round itinerary

This is a similar strategy to picking an older ship. Pick cheaper destinations that are on many itineraries where cruise lines have more cabins to sell. For example, you'll pay less for a suite in the popular Bahamas or Caribbean than you will in Alaska or Europe, where cruise lines base fewer ships and only visit seasonally.

Get a deal when a ship redeploys

When a ship moves from one cruise region to another, say from the Caribbean across the Atlantic to Europe or through the Panama Canal on the way to Alaska, you can save big on the one-way ocean crossings no matter which category you book. For suite guests, these repositioning cruises provide the advantage of at least several days at sea — which means more time to enjoy your opulent environs.

What is a drink package on a cruise ship?

Cruise ship drink packages let you order as many drinks as you want while on a cruise for one flat fee. This takes the place of paying for drinks one at a time.

At some lines, there are several tiers of drink packages. Basic tiers often include just sodas and bottled water. More elaborate (and expensive) tiers will add alcoholic and nonalcoholic cocktails, wine, beer and specialty coffee drinks. In some cases, there will be more than one tier of such all-encompassing plans.

Some lines also offer coffee cards that let you get a fixed number of fancy coffee drinks at a shipboard coffee bar for a discounted price. Some also offer wine-specific packages.

How much do alcoholic drink packages cost on cruise ships?

The cost of cruise ship drink packages varies widely by line. At several of the biggest cruise brands, including Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America , the main drink packages that include all types of drinks cost about $60 per person per day. Other brands, such as Norwegian Cruise Line , charge as much as $138 per person per day for a top-tier package.

Drink packages that don't include alcoholic drinks, such as soda packages, typically cost far less. Soda packages often are under $10 per person per day. Yes. All major cruise lines will let you buy drinks on an a la carte basis when cruising. You don't need a drink package to be able to drink alcoholic beverages or any other type of beverage on a ship.

Can you share a drink package on a cruise ship?

In many cases, no. Several of the biggest cruise lines, including Carnival, Holland America and MSC Cruises, have a rule that if one adult in a cabin orders a drink package, all adults in the cabin must order the package. This is to prevent two or more people in a cabin from sharing a single drink package.

Two lines that notably don't have such a rule are Princess Cruises and Windstar Cruises . Technically, you are not supposed to use your package to buy drinks for other people.

Are drink packages on cruise ships really unlimited?

It depends. Some cruise lines, such as Carnival, limit the number of alcoholic drinks that any one person can order using a drink package to 15 in a day. That is, of course, an enormous number — more than most people will ever want to order.

Where can you use a cruise ship drink package?

Cruise ship drink packages generally are honored anywhere you can order a drink on a ship — think bars, lounges and eateries. However, you usually can't use them when ordering room service. They also generally don't apply to drinks taken out of cabin minibars. Be sure to check the fine print in your particular line's drink package before placing an order for a drink to your room.

Some cruise lines also let you use your packages when visiting their private islands .

A line-by-line guide to cruise drink packages

Below is a line-by-line look at available drink packages at the major lines that offer them. Note that the pricing listed is per person per day. In cases where a line offers more than one drink package, we've highlighted the most inclusive package in detail while also noting other packages cruisers can consider.

Carnival Cruise Line drink package

Package name: Cheers! Beverage Program

Cost per day: $64.95 when purchased on board, not including an 18% automatic gratuity charge; $59.95 plus the gratuity charge when purchased in advance of sailing

Available on: All ships except those sailing in Europe or Australia

What it includes: Beer, wine by the glass, mixed drinks, specialty cocktails, soda, juices, nonalcoholic cocktails, energy drinks, specialty coffees, teas and most bottled water. The package also features a 25% discount on wine bottle purchases.

Limitations related to drink cost: Cannot be used for drinks priced over $20

Fine print: More expensive drinks are available at a 25% discount. If one adult in a cabin purchases the package, all adults in the same cabin also must purchase it. There's a limit of 15 alcoholic drinks per person in a 24-hour period.

Celebrity Cruises drink package

Package name: Premium Drink Package

Cost per day: $109, not including a 20% automatic gratuity charge, for passengers who have purchased a cruise-only rate. Passengers staying in the premium Retreat areas on Celebrity ships receive the Premium Drink Package for free.

Available on: All ships except those in the Galapagos (where drinks are included in the fare)

What it includes: A large selection of beers including craft beers, wine by the glass, mixed drinks, specialty cocktails, Coca-Cola products, juices, nonalcoholic cocktails, energy drinks, specialty coffees, teas and premium bottled water. The package also offers a 20% discount on wine bottle purchases.

Limitations related to drink cost: Cannot be used for drinks priced over $17

Other packages: Celebrity also offers a less inclusive "classic" drink package that is included in the fare for its sailings if you choose the All Included fare (rather than the cruise-only fare). When purchased separately, it costs $89 per person per day, not including a 20% automatic gratuity charge.

Fine print: Packages do not include drinks from in-room minibars. Drinks ordered through room service also aren't included.

Holland America drink package

Package name: Elite Beverage Package

Cost per day: $59.99, not including an 18% gratuity charge

Available on: All ships

What it includes: Beer, wine by the glass, mixed drinks, specialty cocktails, soda, juices, nonalcoholic cocktails, energy drinks, specialty coffees, teas and bottled water

Limitations related to drink cost: Cannot be used for drinks priced over $15

Other packages: The slightly less expensive Signature Beverage Package only includes drinks costing up to $11. It costs $54.95 per day. In addition, the line offers a nonalcoholic drink package called Quench that brings unlimited bottled water, juices, specialty coffees, Coke products and mocktails. It costs $17.95 per day. There's also a Coca-Cola Products package available that covers purchases of Coke products on ships for $8 per day.

Fine print: If one adult in a cabin purchases a package, all adults in the same cabin also must purchase it. Packages do not include drinks from in-room minibars or ordered through room service. The package is not valid on Holland America's private island, Half Moon Cay, or for minibar charges.

MSC Cruises drink package

Package name: Premium Extra Package

Cost per day: $85 for sailings of seven nights or more if booked in advance; $100 if booked on board. Pricing is $88 and $104, respectively, for sailings of six or fewer nights.

What it includes: Drinks by the glass including draft, craft and bottled beer; a selection of wine and Champagne by the glass; premium-brand spirits, liqueurs and cordials; a variety of frozen and classic cocktails; soda; juices; nonalcoholic cocktails; energy drinks; hot chocolate drinks; specialty coffees; teas; and bottled water. The package also offers a 25% discount on wine and Champagne bottle purchases.

Limitations related to drink cost: Cannot be used for drinks priced over $16

Other packages: A less expensive Easy Plus package is available that only includes drinks priced up to $10. It costs $61 per day for sailings of seven nights or longer when booked in advance ($72 when booked on board). Easy Plus package pricing for shorter sailings is $64 per day ($76 when booked on board).

An even cheaper Easy package is available. It only includes a limited number of drinks and is not valid in extra-charge specialty restaurants. It costs $46 to $60 per day, depending on when it's booked and the length of the sailing.

MSC Cruises does not add service charges to drink package purchases, in contrast to the policy at most lines.

Fine print: If one person in a cabin purchases a package, all people in the same cabin or traveling group also must purchase a package (children in cabins will be charged for a less expensive, nonalcoholic package). Packages are not available on sailings shorter than three nights, with the exception of South America sailings. Note that the package is valid on Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve , MSC Cruises' private island in the Bahamas.

Norwegian Cruise Line drink package

Package name: Premium Plus Beverage Package

Cost per day: $138, not including a 20% gratuity charge

Available on: All ships except Pride of America

What it includes: All beverages by the glass (top-shelf spirits, cocktails, beer and wine) and select premium bottles of Champagne and wine. Also includes unlimited Starbucks coffee and specialty drinks, bottled water, soda, juices and energy drinks. There's a 40% discount on other bottles of wine as well.

Limitations related to drink cost: None

Other packages: Norwegian has one less inclusive, less expensive alcoholic beverage package. The Unlimited Open Bar Beverage Package, priced at $109 per day, adds spirits and cocktails priced up to $15. This is the drink package that many travelers get comped as part of Norwegian's Free at Sea promotion (though you still have to pay 20% of the package price for gratuities). In addition, the Hawaii -based Pride of America has a single drink package that costs $109 per day.

Fine print: If one passenger in a cabin purchases a package, everyone in the same cabin as well as other cabins tied to the same method of payment must purchase the package, too. Children are charged for a less expensive, nonalcoholic package. Packages do not include drinks from in-room minibars or ordered through room service. Beverage packages can be used on Norwegian's private island in the Bahamas, Great Stirrup Cay.

Oceania Cruises drink package

Package name: Prestige Select Beverage Package

Cost per day: $30, including gratuities

What it includes: Under Oceania's relatively new "simply MORE" value promise, all passengers receive a House Select beverage package for free with their booking that lets passengers order Champagne, wine and beer with lunch and dinner at onboard restaurants. For $30 more, passengers can then upgrade to the Prestige Select package that allows for ordering beer, wine by the glass, mixed drinks and cocktails at any time. Soda, bottled water and specialty coffees already are included in the fare on Oceania sailings. The Prestige Select package also comes with a 20% discount to wine-pairing dinners on Oceania's Marina and Riviera.

Other packages: As noted above, a House Select package — which covers Champagne, wine and beer with lunch and dinner at onboard restaurants — is included in the fare when booking an Oceania cruise as part of the line's relatively new "simply MORE" program.

Fine print: None

Princess Cruises drink package

Package name: Premier Beverage Package

Cost per day: $84.99, not including an 18% gratuity charge (Princess calls these "crew appreciation" charges). On Australia cruises, the package costs 140 Australian dollars (about $89) per day. There is no gratuity charge on the Australian package.

What it includes: Beer, wine by the glass, mixed drinks, specialty cocktails, soda including canned soda, juices including juice bar offerings, nonalcoholic cocktails, energy drinks, smoothies, milkshakes, specialty coffees, teas and bottled water. The package also brings a 25% discount on wine bottle purchases.

Limitations related to drink cost: Drinks that cost $20 or under are included. Passengers who order drinks that cost more than $20 must pay the difference between the purchase price and $20. For packages on Australia sailings, the cost cutoff is 30 Australian dollars.

Other packages: Princess also offers a less pricey Plus Beverage package that can be used for drinks priced up to $15 (20 Australian dollars on Australian sailings). It's priced at $64.99 (110 Australian dollars on Australian sailings).

Fine print: There's a limit of 15 alcoholic drinks per day.

Royal Caribbean drink package

Package name: Deluxe Beverage Package

Cost per day: $56 to $105, not including an 18% gratuity charge (pricing varies by ship and itinerary)

Available on: All Royal Caribbean ships

What it includes: Beer, wine by the glass, spirits, mixed drinks, cocktails, soda, juices, nonalcoholic cocktails, energy drinks, specialty coffees, teas and premium bottled water. The package also offers a 40% discount on wine bottle purchases for bottles priced up to $100. More expensive bottles come with a 20% discount.

Limitations related to drink cost: Cannot be used for drinks priced over $14

Fine print: If one adult of legal drinking age in a cabin or traveling under the same booking number purchases a package, all adults of legal drinking age in the same cabin also must purchase it. Packages do not include drinks from in-room minibars or those ordered through room service. Drinks served in souvenir glassware, specialty beers and beverages served inside licensed Starbucks stores on ships are not covered by the package. Beverage packages can be used on Royal Caribbean's private islands, Perfect Day at Coco Cay and Labadee .

Viking drink package

Package name: Silver Spirits Beverage Package

Cost per day: $25, including gratuities

Available on: All ships, including river and expedition ships

What it includes: Beer, wine by the glass, mixed drinks and cocktails priced at up to $18. Soda, beer and house wines by the glass ordered at lunch and dinner are already included in the fare at Viking; so are specialty coffees and teas at all hours. The package also brings a 15% discount on wine bottles and premium beverages costing more than $15 that aren't included in the package.

Limitations related to drink cost: Cannot be used for drinks priced over $18

Windstar Cruises drink package

Package name: Captain's Exclusive Beverage Package

Cost per day: $65, not including an 18% gratuity charge. Windstar also has begun offering optional All-Inclusive Pricing rates for cruises that include unlimited drinks at no extra charge.

What it includes: Beer, wine by the glass, spirits and cocktails. Soda, specialty coffees and other nonalcoholic beverages are already included in the fare on Windstar sailings. The package also brings a 30% discount on wine bottle purchases for bottles costing up to $100.

Other packages: The less costly Topmast Discoveries Beer and Wine Package, at $55 per day, includes a choice of beers and premium wines but not spirits and cocktails. Windstar also offers an All-Inclusive Fares add-on package that gives passengers included drinks, Wi-Fi and gratuities for an upcharge of $89 per day.

I spent $2,000 for 7 nights in a 179-square-foot room on one of the world's largest cruise ships. Take a look inside my cabin.

• I booked a stateroom on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, one of the biggest cruise ships.
• For $2,000 a week, the 179-square-foot cabin had a private bathroom, a king-size bed, and a view.
• I thought I'd feel cramped in the room, but it had everything I needed and left no space unused.

In April 2022, I cruised on board Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas . At the time, it was the largest cruise ship in the world , but the title has since been replaced by Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas .

During my voyage, the ship sailed to Roatán, Honduras; Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico; and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas .

For $2,000, I spent seven nights in an ocean-view stateroom on deck eight. The cruise was on sale, as it was originally priced at $3,000. Take a look inside the 179-square-foot space.

My room was a mid-tier cabin at the front of deck eight.

I booked a mid-tier room — a step above interior staterooms , which have no window. It's a category below staterooms with a balcony , and two steps below a suite.

My cabin was on the same deck as Central Park, an outdoor space with 20,000 plants.

I thought it was the most relaxing area on the ship, so I enjoyed being close by.

When I stepped inside my stateroom, I was surprised at how big it felt.

Right away, I thought the cabin made great use of a small space.

To operate most of the electricity in the room, I had to insert my room key into a slot on the wall.

I appreciated the energy-saving system.

On one side of the room, I had a mirror and a desk with several outlets to charge electronics with USB, American, and European ports.

I thought the desk was useful for eating, as well as storing daily flyers about the day's events.

Next to the desk, a set of drawers included a cabinet with a minifridge inside.

The desk drawers were mostly empty aside from a hair dryer, which I didn't end up using.

Across from the desk, I had a couch positioned in between two closets.

Inside each closet, I found a rack of hangers, shelving, and a small safe. I thought it was plenty of space for a weeklong journey

Next to the couch and desk area, a small bathroom used clever storage hacks, like placing the trash can and toilet paper under the counter.

In the bathroom, there were two glasses, a bar of soap, and a two-in-one hair and body wash.

At the top of the shower, a pullout clothing line was useful for drying my bathing suits.

Each night, my stateroom attendant replenished towels and brought flyers and schedules for the next day.

Sometimes, the towels were folded creatively to look like animals.

I noticed that my king-size bed at the back of the room was actually two twin beds pushed together.

All Royal Caribbean cabins come with this configuration, according to its website , so they may be separated for additional guests. I often woke up in the crevice.

A large flat-screen TV was mounted across from the bed with storage hooks below.

Skinny nightstands on either side of the bed held lamps, charging ports, and a room phone on one side.

Because I booked an ocean-view room, I was able to look out over the front of the ship from a window above my bed.

The window was equipped with an electronic shade that could be opened during the day for grand views and closed when I was ready to sleep.

While I thought the room might have been a tight space for a couple with a lot of luggage or a family, it was just right for me.

And watching the sun rise over the Caribbean Sea from the comfort of my room was the best part.

Princess Cruises' Star Princess ship delayed, 9 sailings canceled

Travelers will have to wait longer than planned to sail on Princess Cruises’ upcoming ship.

The delivery of Star Princess, which was set to debut next summer, will be pushed back by about two months. The cruise line said the delay was a “mutual” decision with shipbuilder Fincantieri.

“Following a comprehensive review of the remaining construction milestones, both parties have elected to adjust the ship's delivery date from July 29, 2025 to September 26, 2025, which will result in the cancellation of the nine inaugural sailings,” Princess said in a news release .

Guests whose cruises are impacted will be able to rebook on any Princess ship and, depending on which sailing they pick, receive future cruise and onboard credits. They will also be able to opt for a full refund of their fare instead.

“Despite our collective dedication and relentless pursuit to deliver the ship in late July, it has become evident that additional time is required to ensure the Star Princess is delivered to the highest standards expected by our guests,” Princess Cruises President John Padgett said in the release.

Your cruise was canceled: Now what?

The ship’s new inaugural itineraries will include 11 and seven-day Mediterranean cruises on Oct. 4 and 15, 2025, respectively. Those will be followed by a two-week transatlantic voyage to Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Oct. 22, 2025.

Those sailings will be available to book on April 30.

Star Princess will be the second in the line’s Sphere Class. Sister ship Sun Princess was also delayed ahead of its launch earlier this year, with Princess citing “additional technical work” needed at the shipyard.
