15 Best Things to Do in Eger (Hungary)

A regal city in Northern Hungary, Eger stands out for its thermal waters and opulent Baroque mansions and churches.

This architecture dates to the city’s revival in the 18th century after it was liberated from the Ottoman Empire, which had been in charge throughout the 1600s.

In the 1700s Eger’s bishop Eszterházy Károly established the city as a centre of higher learning and founded the Lyceum, now a university, with a library stacked with invaluable books and manuscripts.

The Lyceum belongs in that catalogue of Baroque wonders in the city, while Eger’s other trademark is its strong red wine, Egri Bikavér.

The story goes that this robust wine was laced with bull’s blood and helped a small defending force defeat more than 30,000 Ottoman invaders in 1552.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Eger :

1. Eger Castle

Eger Castle

Ruling over Eger from a hill east of the Eger Stream, Eger Castle has stood in some form since the Mongol invasion of the 13th century.

In the 15th century a Gothic palace was constructed for Eger’s bishops and a defining moment came a century later in 1552 when the castle repelled an enormous Ottoman army.

The site has a complicated and enthralling history, and the different buildings in the complex house museums.

The Gothic Palace details the history of the castle and the famous siege of 1552, while the Dobó Bastion has an exhibition of weapons.

You can go on a guided tour of the defensive casemates beneath the castle, browse a minting museum with historic coins and peruse the art gallery with works by prominent Hungarian painters like the Realist Mihály Munkácsy.

Lyceum, Eger

Founded by the Bishop Eszterházy Károly, the main university building was designed by József Gerl and Jakab Fellner and built between 1765 and 1785. The Lyceum is held as a masterpiece of the understated Zopf Baroque style and is renowned for its three stunning ceiling frescoes.

The only one visible to everyday visitors is in the library and was painted by the Austrian Johann Lukas Kracker in 1778, depicting the Council of Trent which spearheaded the Counter-Reformation in the 1500s.

The library has more than 130,000 rare books, Medieval manuscripts and incunabula on its fine oak shelving.

One intriguing curio is the only letter written by Mozart on Hungarian soil.

The Lyceum’s observatory is also worthwhile, and has a 53-metre tower containing a small astronomical museum and a camera obscura.

3. Town Under the Town

Town Under The Town

After Eger was retaken from the Ottomans at the end of the 17th century the bishop György Fenessy went about building himself a new palace.

The stone for this residence was quarried from the city’s tufa stone, and before long a four-kilometre network of tunnels had been burrowed beneath Eger.

These galleries were used for storing wine from the 1700s up to the Second World War.

There was no shortage of wine to fill this space as in Eger people could pay their tithe (taxes to the church) with wine instead of money.

There are multilingual tours of these cool tunnels all year round, starting on the hour.

Look out for the Escher-esque pillared room, at the confusing nexus point in the cellar system where 14 galleries intersect.

Minaret

The Ottomans had control of Eger from 1596 to 1687, and during this period they built ten minarets in the city, of which only one survives today.

This 40-metre red sandstone tower stands by the Church of St Sebastian, the site of a former mosque, and dates to the beginning of the 17th century.

It is one of only three surviving minarets from the Ottoman period and is the northernmost Turkish minaret in Europe.

From far off the minaret looks circular, but when you get up close you’ll see that it actually has 14 flat sides.

There are 97 steps to the balcony for a bird’s eye view of the city if you don’t mind braving the extremely tight spiral staircase.

5. Valley of the Beautiful Woman

Valley Of The Beautiful Woman, Eger

The local wine in Eger is bold Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood). This name is believed to come from the Ottoman siege in 1552 when the Turks believed that the strength of the town’s defenders came from mixing bull’s blood with their wine.

Although the quality can vary from grower to grower, Egri Bikavér is consistently robust and goes well with red meat and spicy food.

It is normally composed of a blend of grapes including, but not limited to, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Blaufränkisch and Syrah.

Now, the place to go wine-tasting in Eger is the Valley of the Beautiful Woman, a 15-minute walk from the centre of the town and hosting more than 40 wine cellars side by side.

These can be fancy, serving gourmet food and first-rate wine, or very rough-and-ready.

Head here during the harvest in autumn and many of the establishments serve fresh grape juice.

6. Dobó Square

Dobó Square, Eger

Eger’s sumptuous main plaza is named for István Dobó, the captain who led the defence of the city against the Ottomans in 1552. There’s an homage to Dobó and this battle in the form of a dramatic bronze sculpture cast by Zsigmond Kisfaludi Stróbl in 1968. Another imposing work, by Alajos Stróbl from 1907, shows István Dobó with his sword aloft.

The outstanding monument on the square is the Minorite Church, built according to a design by the Bohemian architect Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer.

We’ll talk about the church a little later, but if you come by at 11:00, 15:00 or 18:00 you’ll hear the carillon chime.

Complementing the church to the right is the town hall (Városháza), built in the Eclectic style at the end of the 19th century.

7. Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Apostle

Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Apostle, Eger

Standing opposite the Lyceum, Eger Basilica is the only Neoclassical monument in the city and is Hungary’s third-largest cathedral.

It was raised between 1831 and 1837 during the bishopric of János László Pyrker.

Built to inspire awe, the cathedral’s eastern main portal is approached from the Lyceum via three sets of stairways and has a temple-like portico with eight Corinthian columns.

Above the pediment are statues of the saints Peter, Paul, Stephen and Ladislaus sculpted by the Italian Marco Casagrande.

Inside, what grabs you is the magnitude of the cathedral and its three soaring frescoed domes.

The first two in the nave are most impressive, and were painted by 20th-century artist Takács István, depicting the ties between the See of Rome and Eger, and the Revelation of St John respectively.

Both works are interwoven with Hungarian folk art motifs.

8. Minorite Church

Minorite Church, Eger

On the east side of Dobó Square, the splendid Minorite Church was built for a branch of the Franciscan order between 1758 and 1771. A fun piece of trivia about this exuberant monument is that the Father Superior got in trouble when the church was completed as it was deemed too lavish for the normally austere Franciscans.

It is the only Baroque church in Hungary with a curved facade and has two 57-metre towers capped with wrought iron crosses.

You can also make out the coat of arms of the Franciscan order.

The glorious frescoes on the ceiling were painted by the Bratislavan artist Márton Reindl in 1769-70, while there are seven theatrical Baroque monuments to be wowed by.

The most imposing is the main altar, with marble columns and sculptures of St Bonaventure and St Ludwig flanking a painting of the Education of Mary in the Temple also by the Austrian Johann Lucas Kracker.

9. Szent Miklós-templom

Szent Miklós-templom

Eger received an influx of Serbian and Greek refugees in the 17th century, fleeing the advance of the Ottoman Empire.

They settled in the northern part of the city and were initially allowed by the bishopric to worship in a former Augustine church.

Later, in the 18th century the wealth members of the Serbian and Greek community were given permission to build a new Orthodox church on the proviso that it was outside the city walls.

The magnificent late-Baroque St Nicholas’ Church has a striking portal carved by the Italian mason Giovanni Adami.

The best bit is the glorious iconostasis, with 60 panels of icons that were painted from 1789 to 1791. Just in front of the iconostasis to the left is an Rococo pulpit with marble effect and gilding.

A curious fact about this fitting is that it was never actually used for services.

10. Small Provost’s Palace

travel free shop eger

On Kossuth Lajos Utca, this refined monument is considered the best expression of Baroque architecture in Eger.

The Small Provost’s Palace was completed in 1758 for the provost count Ignác Batthyány.

In 1849, during the Hungarian War of Independence the palace was where the commanders of the Hungarian army convened before the decisive Battle of Kápolna.

The palace’s has a fine stuccoed facade that stands out for the dainty wrought iron window grates and balcony produced at the prestigious ironworks of Henrik Fazola.

11. Archbishop’s Garden

Archbishop's Garden, Eger

Spreading out over 12 hectares on the east bank of the Eger Stream is the city’s main public park.

For centuries this was an episcopal property, used as a hunting ground from the 1200s, and only opened to the public in 1919. In the 18th century the space was turned into a formal garden under Erdődy Gábor Antal and during the bishopric of Eszterházy Károly in the second half of the 18th century the space was walled off.

On the north and west sides you can still see the ornamental iron gates designed by Henrik Fazola.

The park has a man-made lake crossed by an 18th-century stone bridge and is laid out in the French formal style of the 1700s.

Classical concerts are given at the bandstand next Klapka Utca in summer.

12. Eger Thermal Bath

Eger Thermal Bath

On Eger’s outskirts is a top-notch outdoor water attraction, appealing to grown-ups who want to bathe in Eger’s therapeutic waters as well as kids out for fun.

There are seven pools in total, counting three therapeutic pools with safe amounts of naturally-occurring radon in the water, and a warm thermal pool with slightly sulphurous water at 37°C. You can head for the main swimming pool if you want to get some laps in, or just float around in the “entertainment pool”, which is partly covered with a dome.

Kids on the other hand can run wild in their own pool, which has an imaginative castle with waterfalls and slides.

13. Egri Road Beatles Múzeum

Egri Road Beatles Múzeum

Coming to northern Hungary you may not have counted on visiting a museum to the Fab Four.

But that’s just what awaits you at the Hotel Korona, where two lifelong Beatles fanatics, Gábor Molnár and Gábor Peterdi, have put their collections on display.

These have been assembled over decades and include playable reproductions of the band’s favoured instruments, posters, clothing, toys, limited edition records and newspaper cuttings.

The museum has a timeline for the band, from Quarrymen to breakup, and an interactive area where you can see a movie and listen the Beatles recordings through headphones.

14. Bükk National Park

Bükk National Park, Hungary

Eger is 10 kilometres from the southwestern edge of Hungary’s largest national park.

Mountainous and coated with large tracts of beech and oak woodland, the Bükk National Park is famed for its karst rock formations in the shape of caves (the longest and deepest in the country can be found here), ravines and sinkholes.

The park’s caves were inhabited for tens of thousands of years, and Neanderthal tools and bone remains have been found in many.

For days out you could ride the narrow gauge Lillafüred Forest Train, see the cascades at Szilvasvárad, browse the outdoor folk museum at Hollókő or hike in Nagy-Mező (Great Meadow), bright with wildflowers in early summer.

15. Kopcsik Marcipánia

Kopcsik Marcipánia

The master confectioner Lajos Kopcsik has won just about every prize possible during his illustrious 60-year career.

One of his crowning achievements is a museum where almost everything you see is made of marzipan and painted with tempera.

This could be an opulent Baroque salon with marzipan carpet, wallpaper, stucco, paintings, furniture and other ornaments, all composed over three years.

There are also nods to Eger’s culture, like a marzipan reproduction of its famous minaret and a wine bottle two metres high.

Kopcsik is still going strong, and his most recent creations are an enormous still life and the “dream of butterflies”, with 62 individual marzipan butterflies.

Eger Castle was successfully defended from a vastly larger Ottoman Turkish force, an event regarded as a heroic national defense. Eger's history includes the Mongol invasion wiping out early growth, the 1552 Siege boosting prominence, nearly a century of Ottoman occupation, a vibrant 18th century rebuilt in Baroque style, political unrest in 1848 and recovery from major 20th-century wars to become a modern Hungarian destination.

The square underwent a major renovation in 2014, which expanded the size to accommodate crowds better. The square's main focal point is a monument to István Dobó, the heroic military captain who led Eger's army in fending off a massive Ottoman invasion in 1552. The statue, created by sculptor Alajos Stróbl, shows Captain Dobó raising a sword alongside figures depicting the resilient Eger warriors. It was erected in 1907 to commemorate the famous siege. 5. Valley of the Beautiful Women (Szépasszony-völgy)

The Valley of the Beautiful Women (Szépasszony-völgy in Hungarian) is located in the wine region of Eger. It sits in a green valley surrounded by vineyards, with over 150 wine cellars dug into the hillside in a horseshoe shape. This atmospheric valley has a long history intertwined with wine; since the 18th century, the former archbishop of Eger allowed vineyards to be planted and cellars to be carved out of the soft tufa rock. The valley gets its curious name from various legends. Some refer to ancient pagan fertility goddesses once worshipped here, while other tales speak of a beautiful woman who lived here long ago, drawing admirers from across the region with her wine.

15. City Under The City in Eger

The City Under The City is in Eger, a historic town in northeastern Hungary. After Eger was liberated from Ottoman rule in the late 17th century, the city's bishops did not want to live in Eger Castle. So Bishop György Fenessy bought land in the town center to build a new palace. The building material used was rhyolite tuff, a volcanic rock mined from the hillside behind where the palace was being built. This created an extensive system of cellars, tunnels and corridors underneath the construction site and town, stretching over 4 kilometers from the northern to the southern gates of Eger. This cellar system stored the annual tithe of 11-12 million liters of wine for the bishops. It was used for storage until it was abandoned in 1947. In the 1970s, parts of the dangerous, deteriorating cellars were stabilized with concrete, but much was left untouched. In recent years, parts of the cellars have been restored and opened for guided tours as a tourist attraction called the City Under The City. Visitors can access the cellars through an entrance on the right side of the main stairs leading up to Eger Basilica.

Tours of the underground cellars take 45 minutes and cost 950 HUF (2€, $1, 1£) per person. Tours take place daily from 9 am to 7 pm between April and September, with fewer and shorter tours from October to March. The cellars have a constant cool temperature year-round, so warm clothing is recommended. Visitors walk through the caverns and corridors, seeing different examples of archaeological finds and historical reenactments related to the history of Eger. The most impressive area is the Column Hall, with its chessboard-like pillar structure. The underground cellar system appeals to visitors interested in history, archaeology, winemaking and unusual destinations off the beaten track. Visitors can take buses 10, 11 or 12 from Eger train station or Eger's main square, Dobó tér. The entrance is to the right of the main stairs leading up to Eger Basilica, near a statue of St. László. Guided tours are offered in Hungarian only and require a minimum of 5 participants, so non-Hungarian speakers may have difficulty fully appreciating the experience. The intriguing setting and reenactments help convey the history. The City Under the City offers an affordable and one-of-a-kind activity to enhance any visit to Eger.

Best things to do in Eger

Is Eger worth visiting? – you ask. While no other Hungarian city can match Budapest in terms of the size and the number of attractions, visiting them can be just as memorable. Because they’re so different, and part of their charm is exactly their smaller size. But also their cultural significance and rich history. If you’ve only seen Hungary’s capital, you still don’t know much about Hungary. And one of the best cities to take a day trip to is Eger.

Read this post, too: The Best Hungarian Cities (Beyond Budapest)

So let’s see what to do in Eger.

Visit the castle of Eger

One of the most famous Eger attractions is the middle age castle. The Castle Museum offers several exhibits to give insight into the castle’s and the city’s history, and you get the best panoramic views of Eger from the top of the old castle walls.

This is the castle that a handful of brave Hungarian soldiers defended against the Ottoman attack in 1552, protecting not only Hungary, but also the rest of Europe. This story was also written in the novel Eclipse of the Crescent Moon which is a classic and the first historical novel in Hungarian literature. I’ve read this book several times since my childhood and love it very much. If you’re interested in Hungarian history, this is an entertaining way to get insight. Here you can find an audiobook in English , too. And you’ll surely hear about this book when visiting the exhibitions in Eger castle.

Castle of Eger, Hungary

Standing on a hill above the city of Eger, it’s rather a ruin than a real castle today, but after extensive renovations it’s in surprisingly good condition. From the medieval walls you get a wonderful view of Eger’s city center with the slim church towers and red roofs. It’s the best place to watch the sunset over the city.

Different buildings in the castle complex offer exhibitions where you can learn about the heroes of Eger, that famous siege in 1552 and the weapons used in that age. A peculiar fact: even though captain István Dobó and his soldiers held back the Ottomans in 1552, they finally took over the city in 1596, along with the majority of medieval Hungary. The 40 meters high Minaret with its 93 stairs was built during Turkish rule and it still stands today.

You can visit the ruin garden, the dungeon, the weapon exhibitions, the Turkish bath ruins, and movie illustrations help you imagine how the buildings once looked and how their commanders prepared them for the siege.

Enjoy views from the Minaret

Minaret, Eger, Hungary

This Minaret is one of the most important relics from the Ottoman period in Hungary. During the roughly 100 years of Ottoman invasion in Eger ten minarets were built, and there’s one that survived until today. You can climb the stairs that take you to the top of this red sandstone tower for more city views.

Travel back in time and try some magic in Lyceum

Here’s another place to see in Eger for history lovers. The gorgeous Baroque palace of Lyceum is a university building today, but the Archdiocese Library invites you for some time-travel . This old oak library has more than 130 000 rare books and manuscripts – and also a pretty ceiling fresco. This fresco is brilliant because it makes the flat ceiling look like a dome!

2023 update : Make sure to check the opening hours, because it varies throughout the year and it closes quite soon. It’s closed between December and January – and generally on Mondays all year (like most museums in Hungary). Here are the latest opening hours we found: from Tuesday to Sunday 9.30 am to 3.30 pm, guided tour at 11 am and 2 pm . You can see the official website here (translate it with Google Translate).

Lyceum, Eger, Hungary

But the most magical attraction at the Lyceum is the Magic Tower. Originally it was built as an astronomy tower, and today it has an astronomy exhibition, a planetarium, a Magic Room with interactive experiments and the camera obscura. Installed in 1779 this is probably the oldest functioning camera obscura in the world, followed by a similar one in Edinburgh from 1835.

You can also walk up to the Panorama terrace with the basic ticket to enjoy a 360-degree view of the city from the highest scenic viewpoint.

Opening hours: Apr 1 – 30, Sept 1 – Sept 31: 10 am to 6 pm (closed on Monday) May 1 – Aug 31: 10 am to 6 pm (every day) Oct 1 – March 31: 10 am to 4 pm (closed on Monday) Closed: between Dec 19 and Jan 9 See the official website here .

Hunt for impressive Baroque buildings

What to see in Eger if you’re after the most beautiful pieces of architecture? History is everywhere in Eger, not just in the castle, but on the cobbled streets, or in the magnificent Baroque churches and mansions.

Not far from the entrance of Eger Castle, you find the main square named in honor of the captain of the heroes of Eger: Dobó Square. This pretty square is dominated by a stunning Baroque church, the Minorite Church, the bronze statue of Dobó István and the Town Hall – an Eclectic style building from the late 19 th century.

Eger, Hungary

Then continue on Kossuth Lajos Street, one of the main streets with wonderful Baroque and Rococo buildings decorated with bent iron balconies. Kisrepost and Nagyrepost Palaces, and the Frank Monastery and Church are especially worth taking a look at. The oldest building in Eger is Buttler House.

Have an ice-cream on Széchenyi Street

Széchenyi Street is one of the best Eger tourist attractions to experience the lively, enchanting vibe of this city . It comes with colorful cafés, confectioneries and bars . In the warmer months you can sit out on the street and get a café, sweets or ice-cream while you are watching the different people on this busy walking street.

Taste wine in the Valley of the Beautiful Women

Hungary in general is famous for good wine. And one of our best wine regions is located on the slopes of the South-West part of Bükk Mountains, and its center is Eger.

About half an hour walk from the city center, there’s a place called the Valley of the Beautiful Women ( Szépasszonyvölgy in Hungarian). Being home to about 200 wine cellars, dozens of which are open to the public for wine-tasting, it’s the favorite of all wine lovers.

Eger, Hungary

But why the name “Valley of the Beautiful Women”? No one knows it for sure, but different stories are told. One of them says it’s a pagan goddess. Another says it was a beautiful frivolous local lady with a scandalous life. And another says that it was a beautiful waitress working in one of the cellars in the valley. Well, you can go figure it out for yourself.

Getting back to wine. The local wine in Eger is Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood from Eger). It’s a ruby red, dry wine made from a mixture of at least three different types of grapes from the region, and it goes well with red meat and spicy food. They say its name comes from that famous siege of 1552 when the Turks believed that the brave defenders of Eger got their strength from mixing bull’s blood with their wine. It’s probably true that the soldiers drank wine like people often did in that age, because they often didn’t have access to potable water.

Some other famous wines in the region are: Egri Kékfrankos and Egri Cabernet Sauvignon that are also red wines; Egri Leányka and Egri Muskotály – they are white wines.

Soak in Eger’s famous thermal bath

Another unique remnant of the Turkish era in Eger is the thermal bath culture. Hungary is famous for its countless thermal spas, anyway, and Eger is one of the top places to get a taste of it. The most special part of Eger Termál is probably its authentic Turkish bath . There are also therapeutic pools and a warm thermal pool with slightly sulphurous water at 37°C, and kids have their own fun pool.

Visit the Basilica

Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Apostle, Eger, Hungary

Opposite to the impressive building of the Lyceum stands the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Apostle, Hungary’s third-largest cathedral. It was built in the 19 th century in Neoclassical style, with a classic staircase fringed by Corinthian columns. It mimics the style of Rome’s Pantheon. Take a look inside, too, the interior is richly decorated.

Walk in the Archbishop’s Garden

The Archbishop’s Garden is the biggest park of Eger . For centuries it was a fenced off hunting ground for the bishops, finally opened to the public in 1919. Two of the original iron gates, masterpieces of Henrik Fazola, can still be seen on the northern and western sides of the park. You can also find remnants of French and English gardens inside with a decorative fountain and a pond.

A big playground and an outdoor sports park are modern additions, and they’re great places for a break in the day if you visit Eger with kids.

Take a day trip to Bükk National Park

Szalajka Valley, Hungary

Eger is built on the hills of the Bükk Mountains. Hungary’s mountains are not that high, and Bükk doesn’t reach a thousand metres either, but it’s an incredibly romantic national park . Enjoy the lovely forest trails, the palace hotel and hanging gardens of Lillafüred , Szalajka Valley with its Veil Waterfall or the Bükk Plateau covered with wildflowers every spring.

Read our detailed guide to Bükk National Park here!

Lake Hámori, Lillafüred, Hungary

Take a day trip to the thermal bath and limestone terraces of Egerszalók

There’s a unique thermal bath just 15 minutes drive away from Eger , in the small town of Egerszalók. It’s built next to a salt hill with limestone terraces – and limestone terraces like this can only be found at two other places in the world! (Pamukkale in Turkey, and the famous Mammoth Hot Springs terraces in Yellowstone National Park )

It’s one of the most popular spa centers in Hungary, and the thermal water here helps to cure many diseases. Saliris Resort Spa and Thermal Bath right next to the limestone terraces is popular for its five-star wellness services.

Take a half-day trip to Noszvaj Castle

Adorable Noszvaj Castle is only 15 minutes drive from Eger. This beautiful Baroque manor house was seriously damaged in the Second World War, then it was abandoned for a while. Several rounds of renovations started from the 1950s, and today the castle museum with five furnished rooms is open to the public. The furniture is not original, but age-appropriate, however, the most precious things to see inside are the Rococo frescos on the walls.

Noszvaj Castle has an English park with winding paths and large trees. Entrance ticket is needed both for the castle and the park. You can even choose to stay on the castle grounds: family-friendly Tündérkert Hotel was opened in 2016 , awaiting guests with elegant rooms and free castle access.

Best place to stay in Eger

Eger offers a range of accommodations. You find lots of fully-equipped apartments owned by locals . They’re a popular choice among Hungarian travelers, especially families, and it’s also a great way to support the local community while you visit. But wellness hotels like Hotel Korona Wellness or Hotel Eger & Park are also loved, especially by couples. Imola Hotel Platán is Hungary’s first adult friendly hotel and was selected as one of the best hotels in 2020.

If you’re looking for a bit more affordable hotel, Imola Udvarház Dessert Hotel is a great choice. Practical tips before you visit Eger, Hungary

How to get to eger from budapest.

Eger is about 1.5 hours drive from Budapest, mostly on motorway M3. If you plan to take day trips nearby, it’s comfortable to have a car, but public transport is quite good in Hungary. Even the smallest villages can be accessed at least by local buses, but they often run only once or twice a day, so check the timetable beforehand.

The Eger-Budapest distance by train is about 2 hours. There’s direct trains from Budapest Keleti Railway Station – check schedule and prices here .

The city center of Eger is easily walkable. There’s good public transport, but you don’t really need it for most attractions, especially if you book a central accommodation.

Another option is a Budapest to Eger day trip , which covers transportation and also the sightseeing part, offering a guided tour.

Book your private day trip from Budapest to Eger here.

And where to leave your car if you have one when visiting Eger? The city center has parking zones that require parking fees on weekdays from 8 am to 5 pm and on Saturday from 8 am to 1 pm. You can use public garages (fee applies), book an accommodation that includes free parking or leave your car on the outskirts of the city on the street.

Best time to visit Eger

Eger Castle, Hungary

Hungary gets green and full of flowers by May, and the months between May and October are the most popular for visiting any city or national park in Hungary. Because that’s when it’s the most pleasant to spend time outdoors, the average daily high temperature being 21°C.

Summer is the high season , with lots of Hungarian families visiting during the school holiday. It’s not only the most busy, but it can get unpleasantly hot for sightseeing, too. The hottest month of the year is July, with an average high temperature of 26°C.

Winter on the other hand, between November and March, is too cold and gray to really enjoy sightseeing – unless you mostly sit in cozy cafés and pick other indoor events. The coldest month of the year is January, with an average temperature of -2°C.

Our favorite time is May and September when the weather is often warm enough, and the city gets lively, but not too crowded. October might be nice, too, and fall colors give every Hungarian city a unique charm.

Does Eger tempt you?

These 12 Wrinkle-free Travel Clothes Will Be the M.V.P.s of Your Suitcase — and They’re Starting at $23

They pack like a dream.

Travel + Leisure

I’m one of those people who can’t leave the house in good conscience with wrinkles all over my outfit. But it’s hard to avoid when you travel. I’ve tried every method — rolling things up Marie Kondo-style, laying each item flat and piling it, using packing cubes — but wrinkles are just a reality of the jet-set lifestyle. Sure, I could bring a travel steamer or mini iron, but there's not always room for one in my carry-on. Or, I could curate a wardrobe packed with wrinkle-resistant tops, bottoms, and one-pieces . That way I can skip the part where I have the ironing board set up and my travel companions are impatiently scrolling through their phones because they’re inevitably ready before me.

Some clothes are specially constructed to be wrinkle-resistant, and you’ll find that in the product messaging. But other times, you just have to look at the materials on the label. Some fabrics, like linen and cotton, though great for the warmer weather, are notorious for wrinkling at the drop of a hat. Others have the natural ability to resist and repel wrinkles. These fabrics include (but are not limited to) Supima cotton, lyocell (brand-name Tencel), an eco-friendly acetate called triacetate, charmeuse, and certain types of polyester. Luckily, a lot of your favorite brands are already on board with the convenience of wrinkle-free clothes. Among them are Athleta, Everlane, Madewell and Summersault. And of course, you can dig around Amazon and find your fair share of wrinkle-resistant clothes that travel well, too.

Below, I've rounded up 12 of my favorites, from tanks and polos to rompers and cover-ups. Bonus points for the pieces that include other travel-friendly features, like UPF protection and moisture-wicking fabrics. Bottom line: packing these pieces will make your trip go a lot smoother. Your travel buddies can thank me later.

Timeson Three-quarter-sleeve Blouse

A crisp white blouse is a travel M.V.P., but it’s usually made of quick-to-wrinkle cotton. Not this sheer Timeson blouse from Amazon, though. It’s got wrinkle-resistant polyester (with a touch of stretchy spandex) and has a more relaxed silhouette than a traditional Oxford shirt with its tunic-style design. My white blouses are in constant rotation when I travel because they’re so versatile, and this one is unique in that its precise length allows it to look great tucked in or left loose. Plus, it pairs nicely even with yoga pants. Take it from this shopper : “I packed this blouse in a suitcase for a trip and it didn't wrinkle."

PrettyGarden Midi Summer Dress

Twirl your way through the vineyards in this pretty poplin PrettyGarden dress made with wrinkle-resistant polyester. Its pleated skirt, ruffled hem, and keyhole front make it fun and flirty for any warm-weather destination. And, you can dress it up or down depending on your accessories, so wear it straight out of your suitcase for whatever's next on your itinerary. According to one Amazon customer , it “washes well, never wrinkles" and is "very classy and feminine."

Babaton New Power Blazer

This long, versatile blazer by Aritzia-favorite brand Babaton is my go-to for travel and the perfect layer to help any outfit transition from day to night. I’ve worn it to elevate a white-tee-and-jeans look and over a bodycon dress for a bit more modesty. Its open front, collarless design and ruched, three-quarter sleeves keep it looking chic instead of stuffy, and the fabric is made of eco-friendly triacetate with a touch of polyester — which is the reason why I can literally ball it up in my suitcase and it will never wrinkle.

Summersalt The Silky Luxe Beach to Brunch Wrap Skirt

With Summersalt's Beach to Brunch Wrap Skirt, You can pack up your beach bag with all of the essentials and not have to worry about your swimsuit cover-up getting smushed by your towel, books, snacks, and sunscreen. It's made with silky charmeuse fabric and is specifically designed to resist wrinkles. As the name implies, this skirt can be worn as part of your post-beach outfit thanks to its stunning print, stylish details, and maxi skirt length that provides the right amount of coverage for a restaurant or walk around the city.

Amazon Essentials Lightweight Open-front Cardigan

I’m so glad cardigans are on-trend again because they truly come in handy when I visit places that are hot during the day and chilly at night (Mexico City and Lisbon, I’m talking to you). Roll up this lightweight, best-selling Amazon Essentials cardigan and pop it in your tote without worry because it’s got modal and polyester mixed in, so it won’t look crumpled when you pull it out at night. A reviewer confirmed that it's “wrinkle-resistant and packs well,” and you have your choice of 20 colors and prints to help it maximize your travel wardrobe.

REI Co-op Sahara Bermuda Shorts

Outdoor activities in warmer temps call for shorts that are comfy and rugged, and this pair by REI Co-op is the brand’s answer for Bermuda shorts fans. Not only are these water-repellent, stretchy, and outfitted with UPF sun protection, but they’re also wrinkle-resistant thanks to their resilient nylon construction. I’m not even a regular hiker, but there seems to be a spontaneous hike on almost every extended trip that I take, so this pair is going in my cart for summer.

Madewell Pull-on Wide-leg Pants in Softdrape

Another great fabric option for the wrinkle-free travel life is lyocell — also known by its brand-name Tencel — a sustainable type of rayon that’s known for being super soft, durable, and breathable. That’s what Madewell’s Softdrape fabric is made up of, making its elastic-waist Wide-leg Pants the perfect pair for all-day wear. They can be dressed up or down and paired with anything from a T-shirt or tank to a button-down blouse or bodysuit. According to one reviewer, "They're so comfortable, flattering and stylish. The material is super lightweight and flowy. They'd be flattering on any body type."

Lands’ End Moisture-wicking UPF Sun Curved Hem Tunic Tank Top

Land's End

A soft polyester blend fabric is responsible for making sure that this performance tank top won’t wrinkle, and its UPF 50 sun protection helps shield you from UV rays on long walks and hikes. The ribbed top also wicks away sweat and resists odors, comes in eight cute colors, and pairs perfectly with leggings and shorts. I wore a top just like this to go off-roading in a military tank in the Czech Republic, and wish that I had it for my jeep tour of Sintra, Portugal. It also would have come in handy during my Kenyan safari. Moral of the story? Your travels will often present you with hot-weather, open-sun activities, so you’ll never regret packing a top that does as much as this one does. Use the code " FAVORITES " to get select colors on sale for as little as $23.

Athleta Essential Tee Dress

You’ll always find an occasion to wear this T-shirt dress from Athleta, a brand that masters the intersection between stylish and high-performing activewear and travel clothes. The dress has a playful, flowy shape constructed of breathable, wrinkle-resistant Supima cotton and comes in four colors, including classic gray and black (plus bold hues like orchid pink and rosewood red). The dress makes getting ready a breeze, too — just put it on and pair it with sandals or sneakers, and you’re good to go. One customer wrote, ”I took to Hawaii for spring break… [it was a] comfortable, cute, easy-to-pack, pretty dress."

Basudam Golf Polo Shirt

If a round of tennis, pickleball, or golf is on the agenda, this wrinkle-free polyester polo shirt should be in your suitcase. Its modified V-neck collar gives it a visual twist to make it more fashionable than your average polo. It’s also moisture-wicking and stretchy enough to handle a day filled with sports, but polished enough to keep you looking put together for post-game drinks or grub. “Female golfer here," an Amazon shopper began their review. "This shirt will be my go-to and I plan on buying every color. It's lightweight, super cute, and comfortable."

Everlane The Supima High-neck Riviera Dress

The importance of a comfy midi or maxi dress that doesn’t cling can’t be overstated. I’ve had at least one in my luggage since I became a travel writer, and this High-neck Riviera Dress from Everlane that's made with wrinkle-resistant Supima cotton fits the bill beautifully. It’s the perfect style to pair with Birkenstocks or with your favorite pair of white, all-day walking sneakers. “I am not usually a huge dress girl, but I will definitely be wearing this for spring and upcoming summer months, too," an Everlane shopper raved, adding that they "have already paired it with a jean jacket and black slides."

Athleta Brooklyn Utility Romper

Another wardrobe essential that I’d never travel without is a romper or jumpsuit, as one-pieces just make an easy no-brainer for getting dressed and looking put together fast. They also cinch my waist and skim my figure in a way that leaves me feeling confident and securely covered to handle whatever's on my itinerary for the day. Athleta’s Brooklyn Utility Romper takes it the extra mile by being wrinkle-free, too. Plus, it has UPF-protective fabric and resists snags and rips. According to one reviewer, it's “lightweight and simple" and you can "dress it up with a jacket or just go sleeveless."

Turkey and israel led heinemann’s travel shopping surge in 2023.

Istanbul Airport with its luxury shopping (shown here) has become a $1 billion location for Gebr. ... [+] Heinemann and its partners.

Retail joint-venture operations at airports in Turkey and Israel topped $1.1 billion and $500 million respectively last year helping to push one of the world’s biggest duty-free operators to record annual revenue of $3.9 billion (€3.6 billion) in 2023.

Despite some considerable economic and geopolitical challenges, Hamburg-based travel retailer Gebr. Heinemann managed to slightly exceed 2019 sales for the first time since the pandemic, with year-over-year growth of 25%.

The fifth-generation family-owned company is now looking very positively at 2024 after a strong first quarter that was 24% ahead of the same period last year and above budget forecasts. On Thursday, co-CEO Raoul Spanger said that €4 billion was within sight. He told gathered media: “Strategic investments in the group’s business portfolio from 2023 will come into full effect this year (and) turnover should reach a new all-time high in 2024 and exceed €4 billion.”

Those investments included the buyout of its joint venture business in Israel—mainly at Tel Aviv Airport but also some border stores—to take 100% control, and the establishment of a regional office in Dubai from which to spearhead distribution, and eventually store operations, in the Middle East and Africa.

The company also won a retail concession for the first time in Saudi Arabia at Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport with joint venture partners Jordanian Duty Free Shops and the diversified Astra Group ; and signed the contract for stores aboard Aroya, the first vessel from newly established cruise company Cruise Saudi.

“By entering into carefully selected new partnerships, expanding existing ones, and making strategic investments in other business segments and channels we continue to become more international,” said Heinemann’s other co-CEO Max Heinemann.

JV deals have long been a hallmark of Heinemann’s expansion strategy into new markets. With the global travel retail channel consolidating rapidly, as exemplified most recently by the huge Avolta/Dufry merger with Autogrill, Heinemann is taking steps to protect its market position.

Announcing Heinemann's 2023 results on Thursday (from left): co-CEO Raoul Spanger, chief commercial ... [+] officer Inken Callsen, and co-CEO Max Heinemann.

The travel retailer’s business is dominated by Europe with 59% of turnover (€2.1 billion) last year. The region—where the retailer’s top airport locations are Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Oslo, and Vienna—also had the fastest growth (24%), largely on the back of rising passenger numbers.

However, Norway, historically one of Heinemann’s biggest sales hotspots, was negatively impacted by the imposition of much lower limits on tobacco allowances and the devaluation of the Norwegian krone.

Stability in geographical diversity

Geographical diversification offers greater resilience when it comes to country legislative shocks and currency volatility, and also regional impacts. For example, last year, the continuing fighting in Gaza, triggered by a deadly Hamas attack in southern Israel on October 7, came out of the blue and hit travel and retail sales at Tel Aviv Airport in the final quarter.

Heinemann’s sales director for Middle East Africa, Bernard Schlafstein said that it would have been a record year at Tel Aviv had the war not started. This impacted growth across the Middle East & Africa business last year which ended the year up 18%, but would have been higher.

Bernard Schlafstein described the retail performance at Istanbul Airport as “unstoppable.”

On the plus side, the nature of the shopping at Israel's biggest airport means that sales have picked up quickly. Depressed tourism is not a major factor for store sales as it is outbound Israelis doing most of the buying, and picking up their purchases on return.

That non-reliance on foreign tourism is borne out by results this year. Schlafstein commented: “Our numbers are almost back to last year at around 85% to 90%, even though the passenger figures are much lower.” One key purchase driver is that the pricing at the airport is significantly lower than in the domestic market. This has led to very high average transaction values (ATVs) in the core duty-free shop where about 80 till points are present to cater to the enormous demand.

However, the standout location was Istanbul Airport where Heinemann operates with its joint venture partners Unifree and ATU Duty Free. There, turnover surpassed €1 billion and Schlafstein described it as “unstoppable.”

With the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, rich Russians have been using the gateway—and also Dubai International (where they are the second most important nationality for Dubai Duty Free)—as a connecting route to other destinations. Their presence meant that last year at Istanbul, 40% of fashion turnover came from Russians. This year, so far, revenue at the Turkish Airlines hub is above budget for Heinemann.
