  • Your TSA Guide to Traveling with Sunscreen

The Best Travel-Size Sunscreens Perfect for Your Carry-On

How to choose travel sunscreen by destination, the tl;dr on tsa liquid limits.

Traveling with sunscreen and other liquids can be confusing. Luckily, we consulted with our besties at TSA, so you don't have to.

Can you travel with full-size sunscreen?

Yes, you can travel with full-size sunscreen. However, due to unforch TSA rules, it will need to be added to checked baggage if it contains over 3.4 fluid ounces of liquid, aerosol or gel.

What size sunscreen can you carry on a plane?

You can carry liquids, gel and aerosol sunscreen in travel-size containers that are 3.4 ounces Per TSA regulations, each passenger is limited to one quart-size bag of these items. For more information regarding traveling with liquids, you can view TSA's liquid packing guide here or contact your booked airline directly.

Can you travel with spray sunscreen?

Yes, you can travel with spray sunscreen on a plane. A cap must cover travel sunscreen sprays with an aerosol nozzle to prevent accidental release.

Take note: travel-sized sunscreen spray for the face is pretty easy to find at your local Target , Sephora or Ulta . However, most spray sunscreen for the body comes in full size, which is above TSA's carry-on regulations. So this may have to be an item that needs to be packed in your checked luggage or purchased at your destination.

Does stick sunscreen count as liquid?

Stick sunscreen does not count as a liquid and is allowed in your carry-on bag with no size limitation; it also does not need to be packed in your quart-sized liquid bag (love that for us.)

So now that you know the rules, it's time to play by them. We don't gatekeep at The Knot, so here's a round-up of some of the best travel-size sunscreens for your upcoming honeymoon, bachelorette weekend or destination wedding.

Ok, we just gave you a list of awesome shoppable options, and while all of these SPF choices are sun-worthy, your honeymoon destination can help you narrow down your decision. Like, what is the best sunscreen for the beach? What about colder climates? Let's quickly chat about the UV index, altitude and destination regulations you may want to consider when choosing your travel-size sunscreen.

SPF Levels: UV Index and Altitude

Just because your honeymoon is in the Swiss Alps doesn't mean you are exempt from needing sunscreen. In fact, elevation levels can drastically affect the amount of UV you are exposed to. In fact, according to Reuters, for every 1,000 feet of altitude, you gain around 10% more UV exposure. That means you have more exposure in the mountains than on the beach!

There's also the UV Index, which provides a daily forecast of the expected risk of overexposure to the sun. The index predicts UV intensity levels on a scale of 1 to 11+, where 1 indicates a minimal risk of overexposure and 11+ means a very high risk. You can use your weather app or simply Google the city name and UV index today.

Regardless of where you spend your honeymoon days, it's recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology that everyone apply a broad-spectrum protection of SPF 30 or higher around 15 minutes before going outside. Sunscreen should be reapplied to the face and body approximately every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.

Beach Benefits: Waterproof & Reef-Safe

Waterproof Sunscreen. If you plan on going for a dip in the pool or a morning run on the beach, your travel sunscreen must be sweat- and water-resistant. This means that it's designed to stay on your skin for anywhere from 40 to 80 minutes, even when you're sweating or swimming. Be sure to reapply water-resistant sunscreen after this time period or immediately after swimming or sweating.

Reef-Safe Sunscreen. Reef-safe sunscreens are products that do not use UV-blocking oxybenzone and octinoxate, which are known to cause coral bleaching. When coral turns white, it causes severe stress and makes it susceptible to disease or death. The terms "reef-friendly" and "reef-safe are not currently regulated as of 2023, so be sure to check the ingredient label on the back of your travel-size sunscreen.

In the United States, Hawaii and the city of Key West, Florida , have banned the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. There has been a ban on sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene in the U.S. Virgin Islands as of March 2020. Then there's Australia , which has some of the strictest sunscreen regulations in the world, where products must undergo extensive testing before being placed on shelves.

Mineral vs. Chemical. The key difference between mineral and chemical sunscreens is that mineral sunscreen sits on top of the skin and blocks rays at the surface using ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, while chemical sunscreens absorb rays like a sponge using ingredients like oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, or octinoxate.

Mineral sunscreens tend to be better suited for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin and are better trusted when it comes to concerns about reef safety. However, the formulas can be thick and potentially leave a white cast on those with darker skin tones. Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, are lighter and less likely to leave an annoying white cast, but they can have ingredients that can irritate sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Sunscreen Stick vs. Spray vs. Lotion: Does It Matter?

All sunscreen forms can provide great protection and coverage. It's all about personal preference and proper application. Spray sunscreen is easy to apply, but it can also easily end up being picked up by the wind as opposed to landing on your skin. Lotions and sticks, on the other hand, provide direct contact and are more likely to provide a thick layer of protection and stay on through a long day of sweating in the sun. So, if you're looking for a quickie, the spray is the way to go, but for maximal protection, a sunscreen stick or lotion is your best bet.

The 14 Best Mineral Sunscreens Out-Perform the Rest, Per Testers and Derms

The true MVPs of any skincare routine.

Melanie Rud is a Chicago-based writer with 10 years of experience covering beauty. She covers all things skincare for Byrdie, from ingredients to acne advice.

travel size mineral sunscreen

Byrdie / Joy Kim

When it comes to mineral sunscreens, our best overall pick is Dr. Dennis Gross All-Physical Lightweight Wrinkle Defense SPF 30 . The antioxidant-rich formula goes on completely sheer and doesn't pill under makeup while helping your skin repair itself. For a more affordable option, consider Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Mineral Sunscreen Lotion . This drugstore favorite provides non-greasy, broad-spectrum SPF 50 protection, and it’s a great pick for those with sensitive skin.

When it comes to sunscreen , the absolute most important thing is that you’re using one. It’s imperative that you find a sunscreen you like, you’re actually going to use, and that’s proven effective. But how do you do that? Well, for starters, decide between a mineral or a chemical sunscreen .

While both types can help protect your skin from aging damage and skin cancer, they have plenty of differences. Mineral sunscreens are physical blockers that deflect the rays away from the skin. The main ingredients in mineral sunscreens (aka titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) are deemed generally safe and effective by the FDA because they create a physical barrier between your skin and UV rays. And, as if you needed another reason to consider mineral-based formulas, they also tend to be much less irritating, especially if you have sensitive skin. The chemical options , which absorb UV rays (to prevent your skin from doing so), have come under some scrutiny due to recent findings concerning their ability to penetrate the bloodstream. Plus, this iteration is believed to be slightly less effective than mineral options.

To help break down which mineral formulas are the cremé de la creme (in other words, worth your money and time), we tested 52 top-rated sunscreens—spanning a range of budgets, skin types, and concerns—in our Manhattan-based testing facility and for a few weeks at home. We then paired those insights with the recommendations of board-certified dermatologist Dr. Marisa Garshick, MD, to bring you a well-rounded list of SPF options.

  • What To Look For

Why Trust Byrdie

Best overall, dr. dennis gross skincare all-physical lightweight wrinkle defense spf 30.

Undetectable formula doesn't pill under makeup

Contains protective antioxidants

Oil-free formula contains ferulic acid for clear skin

If you have dry skin, you may want to layer a moisturizer underneath

Type: Mineral | Active Ingredients: Zinc oxide | SPF: 30 | Size: 1.7 oz | Free of: Chemical sunscreens, parabens, phthalates | Cruelty-Free: Yes

If you’re going to reach for one sunscreen day in and day out, make it this one. It contains zinc oxide —a go-to ingredient for creating a barrier between harmful UV rays and your skin. Zinc oxide naturally has a white, pasty tint, but this goes on more sheer, both in color and feeling, than any mineral formula we’ve ever used. (And we’ve used a lot of them.) It’s oil-free—a win for those with oily, acne-prone skin—and contains hydrating sea buckthorn , anti-inflammatory ferulic acid , and antioxidant lingonberry to help your skin repair itself. Our testing found that it blends beautifully into the skin and doesn't pill when makeup is layered on top of it. We also love that the applicator makes it easy to dole out the ideal amount of product for all-day coverage.

Best Budget

Neutrogena sheer zinc face dry-touch sunscreen.

Free of preservatives

Non-pore-clogging formula

Non-greasy finish

Texture is somewhat thick

Type : Mineral | Active Ingredients: Zinc oxide | SPF : 50 | Size : 2 oz | Free of : Oils, fragrance, parabens, phthalates, dyes, octinoxate, oxybenzone | Water-Resistant : Up to 80 minutes | Cruelty-Free : No

This trusty drugstore find offers broad-spectrum SPF 50 (meaning it protects against UVA and UVB rays, both of which can contribute to skin cancer) thanks to naturally sourced 100% zinc oxide. Even better, it uses a special dry-touch technology that ensures you won’t be left feeling greasy after application. The fact that it’s non-comedogenic—meaning it won’t clog your pores—only adds to the appeal.

Best Splurge

Dr. brandt skincare liquid sun shield daily brightening mineral sunscreen.

 Amazon

Clary sage ferment helps fade dark spots

Boosts radiance

Moisturizes skin

Product can get stuck in the dropper easily

Type : Mineral | Active Ingredients: Zinc oxide | SPF : 50 | Size : 1.7 oz | Free of : Parabens, fragrance, formaldehyde, phthalates, oxybenzone, octinoxate | Water-Resistant : No | Cruelty-Free: Yes

When it comes to sunscreen that doubles as skincare, this luxe serum from Dr. Brandt Skincare has our stamp of approval. The formula offers broad-spectrum SPF 50 protection against UVA and UVB rays via non-nano zinc oxide (meaning the sunscreen won’t penetrate your skin) and offers several skincare benefits thanks to plankton extract, which addresses hyperpigmentation and clary sage ferment, which evens out the complexion. It leaves behind an invisible finish, so there’s no need to worry about a pesky white cast, and it also makes an excellent base for makeup.

Best for Sensitive Skin

Solara suncare guardian angel super peptide sunscreen milk, spf 50.

Lightweight, milky texture

Dropper applicator allows you to control how much product you use

No white cast or pilling

Small amount in bottle

Type : Mineral | Active Ingredients: Zinc oxide | SPF : 50 | Size : 1 oz | Free of: Fragrance, essential oils, PEGs, silicone, octinoxate, oxybenzone | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Those with sensitive skin know that finding an SPF that doesn't irritate can be tricky—but this one is fantastic. It's formulated with collagen , amino acids , and Ayurvedic superfruits to support skin reparation and provide antioxidant protection. The milky formula comes in a dropper component, which makes it easy to dispense, and the liquid-like consistency is quick to blend out, super fast-absorbing, and doesn't pill. It feels weightless on the skin and leaves the face feeling balanced—neither dried out nor greasy.

Best for Acne-Prone Skin

Hero cosmetics superlight sunscreen spf 30.

Lightweight texture

Shine-free finish

Slight green tint helps to counteract redness

Can be a bit drying

Type : Mineral | Active Ingredients : Zinc oxide | SPF : 30 | Size : 1.7 oz | Free of : Fragrance, silicone, sulfates, drying alcohols, octinoxate, oxybenzone | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Those with acne-prone skin often shy away from sunscreen, fearing it’ll be greasy and pore-clogging. While that may be the case for some sunscreens, this option from Hero Cosmetics is designed with acne-prone skin in mind. It's formulated with 100% non-nano zinc oxide (a mineral that’s excellent at blocking UV rays without seeping into the pores and causing a reaction), and it’s lightweight and comfortable on the skin. The formula also offers a subtle green tint that helps counteract redness and imparts a more even-toned look to the complexion. When we tried this pick ourselves, we noticed that it has a blendable consistency that stays put once absorbed (aka, it didn’t pill or streak as the day went on). It can be a bit drying, though, so if you have dry skin, make sure you layer on a moisturizer to avoid patchiness.

Best for Oily Skin

Supergoop mineral mattescreen spf 40.

Mattifying formula eliminates shine

Offers a blurred skin-like finish

Reduces the look of enlarged pores

Tint isn't for every skin tone

Type : Mineral | Active Ingredients: Zinc oxide, titanium dioxide | SPF : 40 | Size : 1.5 oz | Free of : Parabens, sulfates, gluten, fragrance, octinoxate, oxybenzone | Water-Resistant : Up to 40 minutes | Cruelty-Free: Yes

When you have oily skin, the last thing you want is a thick, greasy sunscreen to accentuate the appearance of your pores and make you look even shinier. That’s what makes this ultra-light SPF such a great pick. In addition to being a 100% mineral sunscreen with SPF 40 sun protection, this has a matte, shine-free finish that helps smooth the skin’s appearance and reduces shine.

We’ve worn it alone on bare skin or underneath makeup (it works beautifully as a smoothing, skin-protecting primer) and love the way it glides effortlessly over the surface of the skin. It’s worth mentioning that the formula has a peachy hue to offset any white cast, and while it can stretch to accommodate a range of skin tones, it might not look as natural on those with darker skin tones. We really hope the brand creates a few more iterations so that anyone and everyone can use it.

Best for Under Makeup

Unsun cosmetics mineral tinted face sunscreen lotion spf 30.

Leaves behind a healthy glow

Green tea extract reduces redness

Vitamin E moisturizes and soothes

Only two tinted shade options

Type : Mineral | Active Ingredients : Zinc oxide, titanium dioxide | SPF : 30 | Size : 1.5 oz | Free of: Sulfates, parabens, phthalates, octinoxate, oxybenzone | Water-Resistant : Up to 80 minutes | Cruelty-Free: Yes

This mineral sunscreen from Unsun Cosmetics provides SPF 30 protection along with a subtle tint and a healthy glow. It’s chock-full of skincare benefits, as it’s formulated with antioxidant-rich shea butter , plankton extract, green tea leaf extract , and vitamin E , each of which works in tandem to hydrate the skin and offer additional protection from UV rays, infrared radiation, and pollution.

All in all, it makes for a perfect base under makeup since it blends so smoothly into the skin, but it’s also a great choice for the days you want to go sans makeup (but still give your skin a little something). The only thing we wish we could change is the fact that the tint is only available in two options—Light/Medium and Medium/Dark. We felt like each tint could cover a wide range of skin tones, but we’d love to see more options so that everyone can find a more suitable match.

Best for Glowy Skin

Live tinted hueguard broad spectrum primer.

Zero white cast

Radiant finish

Tube made of 100% PCR

Layers beautifully with makeup

Can be a bit drying over time

Type : Mineral | Active Ingredients : Zinc oxide | SPF : 30 | Size : 1.7, 5 oz | Free of : Fragrance, octinoxate, oxybenzone | Cruelty-Free : Yes

Glowy, protected skin is always in, and this priming SPF helps you achieve it. It's formulated with 100% non-nano zinc oxide to minerally block out UV rays, and the lightweight formula has a golden tint to ensure it doesn't create a white cast on the skin. It looks luminous and beautiful on bare skin, but it also doubles as a makeup primer and layers nicely underneath foundation .

Oftentimes, glowy products can be greasy on the skin, but this one isn't. In fact, when testing this product on dry skin, we found the formula slightly drying after using it for several days in a row, so we recommend applying it on top of moisturizer unless you have super oily skin.

Best for On-the-Go

Colorescience sunforgettable total protection brush-on shield.

Provides pollution and blue light protection

Powder makes reapplication easy

Comes in a few shades

Not ideal for dry skin

Type : Mineral | Active Ingredients: Zinc oxide, titanium dioxide | SPF : 30 to 50 | Size : 0.21 oz | Free of : Oils, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, octinoxate, oxybenzone | Water-Resistant: Up to 80 minutes | Cruelty-Free: Yes

This powder protector is not only perfect for travel (no gloopy spills here) but also makes reapplication easier than ever, which is important since Garshick recommends reapplying sunscreen every two hours. “This is a great option, as it can be easily applied over makeup and can be used on the go,” says Garshick. “It contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide and incorporates Enviroscreen technology to provide protection not only against UVA and UVB rays, but also pollution, blue light, and infrared radiation,” which can wreak havoc on the skin and lead to premature aging in the form of wrinkles, dark spots, and more.

It comes in four different shades that blend into a wide range of skin tones, so it’s likely you’ll find a decent match. Just keep in mind that it’s a powder, so it can cling to dry patches. Be sure to layer on a good moisturizer before application if you have especially dry skin.

Best for Workouts

Eltamd spf 50 sunscreen.

Moisturizing formula

No white cast

Non-comedogenic

Leaves behind a slightly shiny residue

Type : Mineral | Active Ingredients : Zinc oxide, tocopheryl acetate | SPF : 50 | Size : 3 oz | Free of: Oils, fragrance, parabens, oxybenzone | Water-Resistant : No | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Often recommended by dermatologists, this SPF 50 from EltaMD should be a go-to for anyone who needs sun protection while getting their sweat on. “It’s easy to apply and especially good for those who are active, as it won’t sting or drip when you sweat," says Garshick. With this advice in mind, we tried it ourselves and can honestly say that the clear zinc oxide protects skin even through the most grueling workouts or hikes, so you can be sure it will do the job even if you’re just out for a walk. Plus, it’s water-resistant for up to 80 minutes and provides broad-spectrum coverage against UVA and UVB rays.

Best Lightweight

Isdin eryfotona actinica mineral spf 50+ sunscreen.

Lightweight

Contains skin-repairing antioxidants

Some people find that it has an unpleasant scent

Type : Mineral | Active Ingredients: Zinc oxide | SPF : 50 | Size : 3.4 oz | Free of: Parabens, octinoxate, oxybenzone | Water-Resistant : Up to 40 minutes | Cruelty-Free: No

One of our perennial go-to’s, this formula uses straight-up zinc oxide for powerful protection. It also relies on DNA repairsomes, powerful enzymes from plankton that help reverse previous sun damage (ideal if you haven’t been so on top of your sunscreen game in the past). It’s also a favorite of Garshick, who loves its absorbency. “This ultralight zinc sunscreen absorbs so well it’s often hard to believe it contains zinc,” she says.

Give it a good shake before applying, then prepare to be amazed by how quickly and easily it disappears. After wearing it ourselves for multiple weeks, we loved how light and liquidy the texture was, making it easy to both apply and reapply throughout the day. We also appreciated that it sat perfectly under makeup without pilling or leaving the skin greasy. Some reviewers online shared that they weren’t fans of the scent, but we didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary as it pertained to a fragrance.

Best for Body

Coola mineral sunscreen spray spf 30.

70% certified organic ingredients

Water-resistant

Easy-to-use spray applicator

Not for the face

Type : Mineral | Active Ingredients : Zinc oxide | SPF : 30 | Size : 5 oz | Free of : Fragrance, parabens, phthalates, octinoxate, oxybenzone | Cruelty-Free : Yes

There are now mineral spray options available for more convenient application, including this one. Fast-absorbing and non-greasy, it has a 14.2% concentration of sun-blocking zinc oxide, along with a blend of certified organic plant-based antioxidants—we’re talking red raspberry seed oil, prickly pear extract , and buriti oil—which act as a nontoxic second line of defense against skin-damaging free radicals . We also appreciate that it’s water-resistant for up to 80 minutes and dries upon contact with the skin. This one isn’t formulated for the face, so we recommend keeping application limited to the body.

Best Hybrid Formula

Eltamd uv clear broad-spectrum spf 46.

Infused with niacinamide and lactic acid to help acne-prone skin

Goes on totally clear

Not very hydrating

Type : Mineral & chemical | Active Ingredients: Zinc oxide, octinoxate | SPF : 46 | Size : 1.7 oz | Free of : Fragrance | Cruelty-Free : Yes

If you’re looking for a formula that contains both mineral and chemical SPF, consider this lightweight option . It’s a hybrid that blends zinc oxide and octinoxate, a chemical sunscreen ingredient, both of which are chemically proven to prevent UV damage. We love how the formula goes on totally clear—so there’s no white cast—and it dries almost immediately. We also like it as an option for acne-prone skin since it’s oil-free and contains anti-inflammatory niacinamide and gently exfoliating lactic acid. During testing, we appreciated the healthy glow it gave us (which, might we add, lasted all day long) and the fact that it didn’t cause any irritation, which can happen with some chemical sunscreens. It’s not the most hydrating, so we suggest layering on some moisturizer before application to ensure skin stays hydrated throughout the day.

Best Multi-Purpose

Ilia super serum skin tint.

Hyaluronic acid and squalane provide intense hydration

Available in 30 shades

Acts as a serum, foundation, and SPF

Formula is runny

Type : Mineral | Active Ingredients: Zinc oxide | SPF : 40 | Size : 1 oz | Free of : Fragrance, parabens, phthalates, octinoxate, oxybenzone | Cruelty-Free: Yes

This formula is part serum , part foundation, and part SPF, allowing you to combine three steps into one (although we recommend applying a separate layer of SPF underneath for extra protection when possible). It contains plant-based squalane and two types of hyaluronic acid , which penetrate various levels of the skin to impart tons of hydration. We found the coverage to be gorgeous, sheer, and glowy, and we were impressed by the fact that it comes in 30 shades. (Pro tip: The color does change a little after you apply it, so we recommend letting it sit for 30 to 60 seconds before blending.) Plus, its broad-spectrum SPF 40 sun protection formula contains plenty of zinc oxide to keep the sun from hurting your skin.

Note: We experimented with this product both in our lab and at home, and in both scenarios, we noticed that the serum is on the runnier side. To avoid making a mess and wasting precious product, we recommend taking your time and being intentional about how much product you dispense with the dropper.

What to Look for in a Mineral Sunscreen

  • At least SPF 30 protection : When it comes to the amount of SPF protection in sunscreen, Garshick stresses the importance of using a formula containing SPF 30 or higher. “When applied and reapplied correctly, SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 15 is thought to block just 93%,” she says. However, there’s also no need to shop for products with a super high SPF amount, either. According to a recent report by the Environmental Working Group, sunscreens offering SPF protection above 50 may not necessarily provide stronger protection against UV rays, so there’s no need to look for anything higher than that.
  • Broad-spectrum protection:  In addition to high enough SPF protection, Garshick says that broad-spectrum protection is also just as important. “This indicates coverage against both UVA and UVB rays,” she says. “While it’s thought that UVB rays are responsible for sunburns and UVA rays are responsible for skin aging, both types of rays can contribute to skin cancer.”
  • Water-resistant formulas : If you are swimming and/or sweating a lot, you should use a water-resistant formula. “No matter what type of sunscreen you’re using, it’s important to understand the label and be aware of whether it’s water-resistant, and if so, for how long,” says Garshick. “This is important because you should reapply sunscreen if exposed to water after 40 or 80 minutes, based on what’s indicated on the label.”

Read into its ingredient list. “Mineral sunscreens contain ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, while chemical sunscreens use chemical filters including avobenzone and octinoxate,” says Garshick.

All sunscreens—mineral included—will eventually expire. Most sunscreens typically last for up to three years after the date of purchase unless otherwise noted on the packaging. Garshick says it’s important to check the product’s expiration date and keep track of how long you’ve had it for, as expired sunscreens aren’t effective in protecting against harmful sun rays.

Byrdie contributor Melanie Rud has over a decade of experience in the beauty industry, writing for some of the biggest magazines and websites out there. As a skincare junkie, sunscreen is her absolute, number one, must-have product—specifically mineral sunscreen, which her sensitive and easily-irritated skin much prefers. She’s a personal fan of all of the products on this list and especially loves the Colorescience option, as it makes reapplication easier than ever.

Caitlyn Martyn is a commerce writer on staff at Byrdie, where she covers all things beauty and style. She is obsessed with sunscreen and hasn’t gone a day without her Supergoop! Mattescreen in over two years. She’s an acne-prone, sensitive skin girlie herself, so she knows a thing or two about finding the right mineral sunscreen that’ll suit your skin.

While you can use any sunscreen on your face (any SPF is better than none), face sunscreen targets the more sensitive skin in that area. Whether you’re vacationing somewhere tropical or integrating SPF into your everyday skincare routine, it’s worth it to invest in a protective and moisturizing face sunscreen.

There are tons of trusted skincare brands on the market, so we went to work to research and choose 24 face sunscreen contenders to test in our New York City lab. We then sent them out into the real world to be further tested in everyday scenarios. We compared the formulas based on opacity levels, water resistance, texture feel, and we even used a moisture reader device in the lab to test hydration levels. The sunscreens highlighted below impressed us with silky smooth formulas that offered all-day protection. Plus, most of these face sunscreens have TSA-friendly bottles under 3.4 ounces, meaning they can easily be tossed in a carry-on.

Best Overall

Summer fridays shadedrops spf 30 mineral milk sunscreen.

  • Feel 4.8 /5
  • Transfer 5 /5
  • Opacity 5 /5
  • Water Resistance 5 /5
  • Removal 5 /5

This thin-consistency sunscreen goes on effortlessly and absorbs extremely fast.

It’s fairly runny.

This face sunscreen from Summer Fridays is the perfect addition to your everyday skincare routine since it feels nearly weightless, especially under makeup. Ideal for a range of skin types, the formula leaves a nice healthy glow that isn’t greasy, and the ingredient list includes zinc oxide for UV protection and squalane for soft and smooth skin. The soothing feeling of applying the sunscreen is immediately followed with quick absorption that leaves the skin feeling hydrated without a white cast or residue left behind. A little bit of the watery formula can cover the entire face, and although the tube is only 1.7 ounces, it will last you a long time. Plus, it’s TSA-friendly so it can be placed in a carry-on or personal item with ease. If you’re headed to the beach, this mineral formula is free of nanoparticles, oxybenzone, octinoxate, and other chemicals that can be harmful to reefs and wildlife. Note, however, that the formula isn’t water resistant so you'll want to double up with a water resistant sunscreen for extra protection if you’re going swimming.

Best Unscented

Supergoop unseen sunscreen spf 40.

  • Feel 4.9 /5
  • Opacity 4.4 /5

It feels weightless to wear as a daily sunscreen or layered under other products.

There’s a slightly oily residue after wearing it all day.

Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen truly lives up its name of looking and feeling nearly invisible all day long. The transparent formula doesn’t leave a white cast or have a shiny finish, but you might notice a slightly greasy feeling at the end of the day, especially if you have oily skin. Best of all, this weightless sunscreen lacks fragrance which is better for sensitive skin and it doesn't cause any irritation or eye stinging when washing your face at the end of the day. If you’re swimming in the ocean or working out, the sunscreen offers 40 minutes of water resistance before it needs to be reapplied.

Best Splurge

Isdin eryfotona actinica mineral spf 50+ sunscreen.

  • Opacity 4.7 /5

A small amount of this sunscreen goes a long way and it absorbs very quickly.

There is a slight white cast that disappears once it absorbs.

If your skincare budget is on the higher end, ISDIN’s daily mineral sunscreen has near-perfect scores across all of our testing categories. Although this formula is mineral-based, the texture is very milky and watery so a little bit of sunscreen from the 3.4-ounce tube will cover your entire face with ease. In under 15 minutes, the sunscreen absorbs into the skin, leaving behind a slight white cast you might notice while applying it, but will disappear once fully absorbed. When faced with water or sweat, the sunscreen remains absorbed into your skin without running into your eyes or causing a stinging feeling, and it offers up to 40 minutes of water resistance. Plus, it can easily be layered over makeup or moisturizer when it’s time to reapply.

Best Tinted

Iris & romeo weekend skin spf 50 + vitamin c + glow.

Iris & Romeo

  • Opacity 4.8 /5

The glowy formula is so lightweight it doesn’t even feel like sunscreen.

We wish it were a bit more hydrating.

This two-in-one face sunscreen and primer has a silky texture that will leave your skin with a glowy finish thanks to the tinted formula. The directions on the tube recommend applying generously as the lightweight texture isn’t very hydrating, so you may also want to put on extra moisturizer if you have dry skin. Made with vegan and reef-safe ingredients, the list includes vitamin C, vitamin E, chamomile, and allantoin to hydrate and soothe the skin while the zinc oxide SPF 50 offers broad-spectrum protection from harmful UV rays. While you may need to keep applying the sunscreen throughout the day to keep the glow going, the formula is super easy to take off with micellar water at night. Best of all, you can save room in your toiletry bag since you won't have to pack separate skin care products.

The Details: SPF 50 | 1.18 ounces | Reef safe | Vegan

Best Budget

Hero cosmetics superlight sunscreen spf 30.

  • Opacity 4.3 /5
  • Removal 4 /5

The sunscreen is sheer which makes it very easy to keep applying throughout the day.

It may take some extra effort to rub in due to its green tint.

This wallet-friendly face sunscreen from Hero is perfect for everyday wear thanks to its lightweight and soothing texture. It’s super easy to reapply this watery formula all day long since it blends into the skin seamlessly and doesn’t leave a white cast or residue for a sheer and slightly glowy end result. Because the sunscreen is made with what the brand calls a “green surge,” the antioxidant superfood botanical ingredient gives it a light green tint which needs a little extra rubbing in to get a completely transparent finish. After massaging it into the face, you can easily layer other beauty products on top or let the natural glow from the sunscreen radiate on its own. It won’t irritate your eyes when it comes off at the end of the day, and it can even be worn in a sweaty workout class without having to worry about the sunscreen transferring onto your clothing or getting in your eyes.

The Details: SPF 30 | 1.69 ounces | Reef safe | Mineral based | Fragrance free

Best Mineral

Kinship moisturizing sunscreen.

The texture is much lighter and less cakey than in most mineral-based sunscreens.

It has a pink tint to it.

Mineral-based sunscreen can get a bad rap, but we were blown away by the lightweight feel and transparent application of this one by Kinship. The subtle vanilla-scented formula is packed full of vegan and reef-safe ingredients like turmeric, jojoba, and coconut, as well as other plant-based probiotics designed for soothing sensitive skin. With a similar texture as a creamy lotion, the sunscreen applies evenly, and two lengths of a finger is the perfect amount to cover the entire face. There is a pinkish tint to this sunscreen which leaves more of a glowy look than a white cast, but it’s still slightly noticeable on the skin after it absorbs. The more sunscreen you use, the more of a sheen will be left on your face, but luckily it’s more of a glowy sheen than a greasy one.

The Details: SPF 32 | 1.75 ounces | Reef safe | Mineral based | Vegan

Best Hybrid

Cocokind silk spf.

  • Opacity 4.9 /5
  • Water Resistance 4 /5

The silky formula combines mineral and chemical SPF for sun protection and a smooth texture.

It runs when it comes into contact with water.

Get the best of both worlds with this hybrid Cocokind sunscreen that provides broad-spectrum protection from mineral compounds with the smoother and lighter texture of chemical compounds. The sunscreen applies like a lotion (although slightly greasier) and dries quickly without leaving a film behind. During our tests, it didn’t transfer onto clothes but it did come off and run a bit when we sprayed water onto our face. However, it’s not designed to be water resistant and the brand does recommend putting a layer of sunscreen with water resistance on top if you’re planning to swim. A little bit of this sunscreen goes a long way, so although the tube is only 1.7 ounces, it does last a while, even with daily use.

The Details: SPF 30 | 1.7 ounces | Vegan

Glossier Invisible Shield SPF 35

The ultra-lightweight formula has a cooling feel to it.

It dries fairly quickly so you’ll need to rub it in right away.

This unique sunscreen from Glossier has a gel-like texture that feels very cooling and hydrating as it glides onto the skin. It dries super quickly so you’ll need to rub it in fast, but the end result leaves your skin feeling moisturized without any residue left over. Because the jelly material is so lightweight and quick-drying, it’s easy to keep applying the sunscreen throughout the day as needed. The product remains in place even when it comes into contact with water or sweat, so it may take an extra rinse to clean your face at the end of the day. If any of the sunscreen gets into your eyes by accident, the formula doesn’t sting or cause irritation. It also comes in a small 1-ounce container so it's perfect to stick in a carry-on or personal item.

The Details: SPF 25 | 1 ounce | Gel formula | Vegan

Best Travel Size

Black girl sunscreen broad spectrum spf 30.

  • Feel 4.3 /5
  • Water Resistance 4.5 /5

The formula absorbs into the skin seamlessly and comes in a 3-ounce bottle, adhering to the TSA regulations.

It gets a little oily at the end of the day.

Black Girl Sunscreen is a woman-of-color-owned business that creates sunscreen designed for darker skin tones, with an ingredient list that includes carrot juice, jojoba, avocado, cacao, and sunflower oil. With a formula that offers 80 minutes of water resistance and comes in a 3-ounce bottle, this sunscreen is an all-around travel-friendly favorite. Plus, the sunscreen is fragrance-free, making it better suited for sensitive skin, but it does leave a slightly oily sheen so it may not be best for those with oily skin. For a more liquidy formula, the texture is still thick enough that it absorbs into the skin quickly and doesn’t run off or leave a white cast after your face gets wet, so it’s ideal for working out or swimming.

The Details: SPF 30 | 3 ounces | 80 minute water resistance | Reef safe

Best for Outdoor Activities

Coola classic face organic sunscreen lotion.

The thicker formula absorbs into the skin evenly and offers up to 80 minutes of water resistance.

It has a slightly oily finish.

Whether you’re swimming, hiking, biking, or running outdoors, this Coola face sunscreen has a thick texture that absorbs evenly into the skin and leaves a dewy finish once it’s been massaged thoroughly into your face. With up to 80 minutes of water resistance, this face sunscreen boasts the same protection as body sunscreen, but its non-irritating formula is better suited to more sensitive facial skin. The broad spectrum formula has an SPF of 50 and it excludes harmful chemicals like octinoxate and oxybenzone so you can snorkel or swim near reefs without harming them. We noticed a slightly oily or shiny residue that was left over after rubbing it in, but there was no white cast or streaking, and the sunscreen didn’t run down our face when it got wet or sweaty.

The Details: SPF 50 | 1.7 ounce | 80 minute water resistance | Reef safe | Fragrance free

Other Face Sunscreens We Liked

The face sunscreens below are all excellent options, but compared to our top-performing sunscreens they fell slightly behind due to minor issues like formula texture and opacity. Still, we felt they were worth an honorable mention.

EltaMD UV Daily Face Sunscreen Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid : The formula is non-irritating and it applies very smoothly, but it leaves a fairly thick white cast, so it may be more of a beach day essential rather than worn underneath makeup on a daily basis.

Dr. Rossi Derm MD The Day Formula : It’s a thick formula that still layers evenly under makeup, but it takes some serious rubbing to get it fully absorbed into the skin without leaving residue or a white cast. Plus, the high price point was also a downside since the tube is quite small.

Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Sunscreen : With a similar feel to a lightweight lotion, this formula spread smoothly across our face without leaving a residue or white cast. However, it didn’t layer well over foundation and concealer, so it pilled throughout the day.

After thoroughly researching a number of face sunscreens, we chose 24 options from trusted skincare brands to test out in our New York City lab. We then sent the face sunscreen out into the real world to try in everyday life to garner even more testing insights to help determine the overall winners.

In both series of tests, we factored in the feel, opacity, transferability, water resistance, and removal ease of each sunscreen, plus we used a moisture reader device in our lab to measure moisture levels. We tested the sunscreens in a real-world setting for two weeks where we wore the sun lotion for activities like working out, hiking, swimming, and running errands. The face sunscreens with the highest praise from both sets of tests were noted as having a silky formula that stayed on our face all day long without running while sweating or leaving a white cast finish.

Tips for Buying Face Sunscreen

Look for spf and uv protection.

Be sure to look at the label and choose sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher as well as broad spectrum protection to ward off both UVA and UVB rays. If you end up wearing sunscreen for outdoor activities like swimming or running, you’ll also want to check the water or sweat resistance capabilities and reapply accordingly. It’s important to get a sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection that defends against both UVA and UVB rays, so you’ll want to look for one that has the FDA seal of approval for broad-spectrum protection on the tube or label.

Choose the right formula for your skin type

Since face sunscreen can be worn daily, you should treat it as part of your everyday skincare routine and invest in a bottle that fits your needs. Those with oily or acne-prone skin may want to opt for a non-irritating mineral-based sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. If you have dry skin, be sure to read the ingredients and look for moisturizing elements like aloe vera or hyaluronic acid.

Opt for reef-safe sunscreen when in the ocean

Going on a tropical vacation ? Before buying face sunscreen, you’ll want to do some research on your destination to find out which products might be banned in the state or country. For example, Hawaii, Palau, and the U.S. Virgin Islands all have bans on sunscreens that include ingredients like oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene, homosalate, 4-methyl benzylidene camphor, Triclosan, parabens, nanoparticles, and microplastics.

It can be hard to gauge how much sunscreen to put on your face, so consider using the two-finger rule to apply an appropriate amount. Squeeze two lines of sunscreen from the tube onto both your index finger and middle finger before applying to ensure you’re using enough, then wait 15 minutes before going in the water or sweating to let it soak in.

Since sunscreen counts as a liquid, it can be packed in a carry-on as long as it falls at or below the 3.4-ounce liquid restrictions for going through the TSA security inspection at airports. If the bottle is larger than 3.4 ounces, it will need to be packed in checked luggage.

The most important step in every skincare routine: face sunscreen. Wearing and reapplying a daily sunscreen can help protect your skin from sun damage and prevent premature aging. Whether you're headed out for a day swimming at the beach or dodging puddles in the rain , sun exposure of any kind can be damaging, so finding a solid sunscreen routine is crucial. As important as wearing a facial sunscreen is, the greasy feeling, clogged pores, and oily shine some leave behind can make you want to skip that step altogether. That’s why it’s important to find a product you actually want to wear every day.

To help you discover your new favorite face SPF, our editors tested dozens of top-selling sunscreens on the market, wearing them on planes, to the park, the beach, the gym, and everywhere in between to see which performed the best. We tested a mix of both chemical and mineral sunscreens, as well as varying formulas—from invisible gels and sticks to tinted moisturizers. We also consulted an expert dermatologist to help guide our search, keeping key ingredients and SPF protection levels in mind. And we made sure to find options for every skin type—whether your skin is more dry, oily, sensitive, or requires a mineral formula, we've got you covered. Below, the 11 best face sunscreens to throw in your Dopp kit or beach bag this summer and beyond.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

What should I look for in a face sunscreen?

I asked Dr. Cybele Fishman , an aesthetic and medical dermatologist, for guidance on what to look for when shopping for a new face sunscreen. “SPF only measures protection to UVB, not UVA, and UVA is a risk factor for melanoma, as well as aging of the skin,” Dr. Fishman says. “So it's important to look for a sunscreen that says broad spectrum and is above SPF 30.”

How much sunscreen should I apply?

When it comes to how much sunscreen you should be using, Dr. Fishman recommends more than you might think—about a shot glass worth, or two tablespoons, every two hours to be most effective.

Are mineral sunscreens better for you?

Dr. Fishman prefers a mineral sunscreen for all skin types: “No one is allergic to zinc and titanium—they are inert. Oxybenzone is a common cause of contact allergy and is bad for coral reefs. Plus, mineral sunscreen blocks both UVA and UBV,” she says. But if your favorite sunscreen is made with chemical ingredients, don't worry: “The best sunscreen is the one you will actually use,” Dr. Fishman says. “So for me, the important thing is that you find something you like that has broad spectrum coverage (UVA and UVB) and is above SPF 30.”

More sun care recommendations:

Don't forget to put sunscreen on any exposed skin (face, neck, and hands) when you're in a car. Dr. Fishman warns that UVA gets through windows, meaning you need sun protection whether you're in the passenger seat on a cross-country road trip or driving to the grocery store.

Tested by : Meaghan Kenny , associate commerce editor

Type of protection : Chemical

Strength : Broad spectrum SPF 40

Stand-out features : Completely invisible, feels weightless, and performs well for all skin types and tones

Why we recommend it: Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen is a long-time cult favorite among Condé Nast Traveler editors . It lives up to its name, going on as a completely invisible, smooth gel, no matter your skin tone. Designed for all skin types, this Supergoop classic works for anyone looking for a new daily sunscreen, and is both reef-safe and oil-free. It feels similar to a makeup primer on your skin and provides waterproof SFP 40 coverage. I've tested out dozens of face sunscreens over the years, and while there's lots of great ones on the market, I always come back to this reliable old friend. Bonus: It layers well underneath makeup, too.

Image may contain: Bottle, and Cosmetics

Tested by : Megan Spurrell , senior editor

Type of protection : Mineral

Strength : Broad spectrum SPF 50

Stand-out features : Tone-adapting color coverage, protects against blue light and pollution, oil-free

Why we recommend it : You might have seen one of the several viral TikTok videos about the somewhat magical color-changing abilities of Colorescience's Sunforgettable mineral sunscreen. We decided to put it to the test ourselves and see what all the hype was about. At first, Traveler's senior editor, Megan Spurrel l, was a little skeptical of how liquidy the formula is (you need to pour it into the center of our hand as opposed to onto a fingertip.) She was pleasantly surprised, though, noting that this makes it easy to blend in and soak into the skin smoothly. “The color-changing feature, though, is sort of miraculous. It appears speckled white in my hand, but changes to my skin tone once on my face. There's no white cast, but subtle coverage, and my skin feels hydrated without being greasy. It's kind of amazing,” says Spurrell. It layers well under makeup, but it shines all on its own, making it a great face makeup replacement if a tinted moisturizer is more your thing. It's available in four shades—fair, medium, tan, and deep—which may not sound like an impressive range, but given its ability to perfectly adapt to your skin tone, it works for everyone.

Tested by : Mercedes Bleth , global associate director of social

Strength : SPF 40

Stand-out features : Leaves no white cast, feels so lightweight, and blends in effortlessly

Why we recommend it: If you're on team mineral sunscreen, you may have envied your friends who have been wearing and swearing by Supergoop's Unseen Sunscreen for years—Mercedes Bleth, our global associate director of social, sure did. At last, her prayers have been answered. The SPF brand recently launched a 100 percent mineral version of its best-selling chemical formula. The texture is a little different than the original Unseen, which is a gel. The mineral version is more like a mousse (and has a very similar texture to Supergoop's Mineral Mattescreen ). With a velvety smooth texture, it blends in effortlessly (even underneath makeup) and leaves absolutely no white cast behind, a stand-out feature mineral sunscreen-wearers must see to believe. It's not one bit oily, so if "dew" is something you're looking for, you won't get it with this sunscreen. “It is truly, the perfect every day mineral sunscreen,” says Bleth.

Tested by : Hannah Towey , associate editor, transportation and travel news

Stand-out features : Gentle enough for babies and kids, can be used on the face and body, fragrance-free

Why we recommend it : If you're looking for a compact face stick to throw in a small beach bag or fanny pack, consider this small-but-mighty gem from Mustela. A sunscreen stick is great option for on-the-go travelers or busy parents—your hands stay clean and you can easily re-apply it. This has become a go-to for Traveler's associate editor of transportation and travel news, Hannah Towey : “For a mineral Zinc sunscreen made with 70 percent natural ingredients, this is about as sheer and lightweight as you can get. It does leave a faint white cast (hard to avoid when it comes to mineral sunscreens), but is quite easy to blend in.” We especially love that its safe to use on babies, children, and anyone with sensitive-skin, making it a packing list staple for family vacations. “If you're someone who, like me, has been wanting to make the jump from chemical to mineral sunscreens but would prefer to avoid that cakey white cast, this sheer formula makes the transition less daunting," says Towey. She even wore it while surging at Rockaway Beach this spring (its water-resistant for up to 80 minutes). Towey did note that its not a sunscreen she would layer under makeup—it’s much better suited for outdoor activities and beach days instead.

travel size mineral sunscreen

Tested by : Mercedes Bleth, global associate director of social

Strength : Broad spectrum SPF 30

Stand-out features : It smells amazing, is super hydrating, and leaves no white cast

Why we recommend it : A favorite of Bleth's for years , the Kinfield Daily Dew continues to earn a place among our top face sunscreens. If you're acne-prone, have sensitive skin, or are allergic to chemical sunscreen, this reef-safe, 100 percent mineral formula is for you. Its sweat- and water-resistant for up to 80 minutes and feels a little bit thicker than your everyday sunscreen, making it an ideal choice for your most active days—swimming, surfing, or hiking. The hydrating, sport-ready sunscreen leaves your skin feeling hydrating and dewy without any streaks in sight. Oh, and it smells so so good.

Image may contain: Bottle, Lotion, Cosmetics, and Perfume

Tested by : Matt Ortile , associate editor

Stand-out features : Neutralizes redness, helps reduce fine line and wrinkles, non-pilling

Why we recommend it : Here's an SPF that acts a whole lot like a moisturizer. Associate editor Matt Ortile appreciates how quickly and evenly this skincare-forward sunscreen from Dune dries down—and without feeling greasy, oily, or leaving a white cast. “The texture feels like any other great face moisturizer: lightweight and a tiny bit refreshing. Makes sense, since the bottle touts ‘72-hour hydration,'” he says. There's also a green tint to the sunscreen itself, which helps neutralize any redness on your skin. “Given its lightweight feeling and easy-to-apply consistency, this invisible gel sunscreen is great for everyday use,” says Ortile.

Image may contain: Bottle, Shaker, Cosmetics, and Sunscreen

Tested by : Jessica Chapel , editorial assistant

Stand-out features : Packed with hyaluronic acid and Vitamin E, layers well underneath makeup, and features an easy-to-open, leakproof bottle

Why we recommend it : If you're searching for a daily sunscreen packed with key skincare ingredients for extra hydration, this might just be your new favorite. “The formula feels different from other sunscreens I’ve used, probably due to the inclusion of hyaluronic acid and vitamin E. It provides immediate moisture and takes a bit longer to dry down, but this can be a positive for anyone wanting to achieve a dewy look,” says editorial assistant Jessica Chapel . Hyaluronic acid helps leave the skin looking plump and glowy, making it a great ingredient for our friends with dry skin. La Roche Posay designed this formula with all skin types and tones in mind, all while providing SPF 50 protection. “My face was completely burn-free after spending all day in the park for one of the first warmer days in NYC of the season,” says Chapel.

Image may contain: Bottle, Cosmetics, and Sunscreen

Tested by : Meaghan Kenny, associate commerce editor

Type of protection : Hybrid of chemical and mineral

Stand-out features : Safe for sensitive, dry, and acne-prone skin; designed for the face and body

Why we recommend it : I've been a trusted devotee to CeraVe for years; the brand continues to win me over with its gentle everyday skincare products that keep sensitive skin top of mind (especially its Moisturizing Cream and Resurfacing Retinol Serum ). I had high hopes that its Hydrating Sheer Sunscreen would perform just as well—and it certainly didn't disappoint. Its made with a smart hybrid formula, blending both chemical and mineral sunscreen ingredients, to deliver great protection while still looking almost invisible on the skin. Its contains essential ceramides and niacinamide, meaning its treating my skin well while providing SPF 30 protection. The formula is liquidy and leaves a very slight white cast, but it blends in seamlessly and dries down pretty quick. It doesn't feel greasy and I've worn it both on its own and underneath makeup. Its water-resistant for up to 80 minutes, so I'll be throwing it in my beach bag for trips down the shore all summer long. What I love most is that its designed for both the face and body. I usually don't like to use the same type of sunscreen on my face that I use on my body, as it typically will clog my pores or cause irritation, but here's my all-in-one exception to the rule.

Image may contain: Cosmetics, Bottle, Shaker, and Deodorant

Tested by : Rebecca Misner , senior features editor

Strength : Broad spectrum SPF 46

Stand-out features : Fragrance- and oil-free, pump dispenser, packed with niacinamide

Why we recommend it : Senior features editor Rebecca Misner raves about the EltaMD UV Clear sunscreen; its a crucial first step in her daily skincare routine rain or shine, with or without makeup. The lightweight, oil-free formula glides on easily and blends it quickly—without a white cast left behind. It has a very sheet tint—which helps even out your skin tone without covering it up and leaves a subtle glow behind. “It's sheer enough that my husband and teenage son both use it and don't feel like they're putting on makeup,” says Misner. She also likes that the 1.7-ounce bottle with a pump dispenser is great for travel—it doesn't leak and you can toss it right in your carry-on. Safe for acne-prone and sensitive skin, this EltaMD favorite contains high-purity niacinamide that helps reduce the appearance of discoloration and smooths the skin. “I notice I don't need to wear as much makeup when I use this. It’s the rare product that I find myself telling friends about!” she says.

Image may contain: Bottle, Cosmetics, Sunscreen, Lotion, Food, and Ketchup

Tested by : Hannah Towey, associate editor, transportation and travel news

Strength : Broad spectrum SPF 60

Stand-out features : Oxybenzone-free, water- and sweat-resistant for up to 80 minutes, affordable price point

Why we recommend it : This weightless formula with prebiotic oat from Aveeno is moisturizing and refreshing, leaving you feeling glowy and hydrated. “It dries clear, doesn’t leave a white cast, and isn’t greasy or oily. I actually enjoy the feeling of putting it on,” says Hannah Towey. It's also oxybenzone-free, another bonus for Towey. It's water- and sweat-resistant for up to 80 minutes, making it a great choice for the beach and outdoor activities—just be sure to re-apply throughout the day. It dries clear and truly hydrates the skin, so you can layer it underneath makeup without any pilling. “I’ve tried much more expensive sunscreens and consistently find myself going back to this Aveeno lotion every summer. I have sensitive, acne-prone skin and it doesn’t make me break out,” says Towey.

Image may contain: Bottle, Cosmetics, Sunscreen, and Lotion

Tested by : Charlie Hobbs , associate editor

Stand-out features : Hydrating, oil-free, lightweight enough for daily wear

Why we recommend it : Rounding out our list of the best face sunscreens is another favorite of ours from La Roche-Posay. This daily moisturizer is ideal for anyone with dry or acne-prone skin—which has made it a favorite of associate editor Charlie Hobbs . “I have delicate, acne-prone skin (and have been on Accutane twice!) so it's important to me that what goes on my face is gentle and moisturizing—to have a morning moisturizer that's full of SPF is just wonderful. The skincare-first sunscreen boosts lots of key ingredients: essential ceramides, niacinamide, and glycerin. Its designed to help protect and restore your skin's nature barrier, all while offering SPF 30 coverage. ”I love La Roche-Posay in part because it's always in my mother's medicine cabinet—sentimental—but it's also just plain old good and reliable," says Hobbs.

WHAT IS TRAVEL-SIZED SUNSCREEN?

According to the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) , travel-sized sunscreen containers are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) in size. If you bring larger sunscreen for travel, you’ll need to pack it in your checked baggage, not your carry-on item.

light bulb icon

WHAT ARE THE RESTRICTIONS ON SUNSCREEN FOR TRAVEL?

If your travel sunscreen comes in a liquid, aerosol, or cream formula, the product must be no bigger than 3.4 oz to go in a carry-on and through airport security. Larger containers must go in a checked suitcase, no matter how empty or full the contents may be.

For longer vacations that require ample sun protection, it’s best to pour your SPF product into multiple travel-sized sunscreen bottles to ensure your item isn’t confiscated at the TSA security checkpoint.

To facilitate the screening process, passengers are asked to place their liquid items into one clear, tamper-evident, quart-sized bag separate from their carry-on bag, which must be screened and cleared before boarding. This is often referred to as the 3-1-1 liquids rule: 3 (approximate ounces per container) in 1 (quart-sized bag) per 1 (passenger).

Note: As of June 30, 2018, the revised TSA policy states that passengers traveling to the U.S. from an international last-point-of-departure with powder-based substances greater than 12 oz (350mL) in a carry-on may require additional screening. For your convenience, it’s encouraged to pack powder substances, such as travel sunscreen, in your checked luggage regardless of their size.

light bulb icon

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T BRING TRAVEL-SIZE SUNBLOCK**?

Although it’s possible for a prohibited item to make it past TSA screening without triggering an alarm, the situation is very rare. Also, according to TSA guidelines , even if an item is generally permitted, it may be subject to additional screening or not allowed through the checkpoint if it signals an alarm.

If your item(s) set off an alarm, a TSA officer will first ask you to confirm ownership of the luggage, then request you to remove the object in question for further inspection. Any item that’s deemed prohibited or cannot be screened will not be permitted past security. Federal law and operational considerations restrict the return of prohibited items that are left at the security checkpoint.

Ultimately, the final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint.

*Sunblock is not a term approved by the FDA. Colorescience refers to our products as sun protection.

light bulb icon

WHY CAN’T I TRAVEL WITH SUNSCREEN TO CERTAIN STATES OR COUNTRIES?

In some locations, such as Hawaii and the Virgin Islands, your travel sunscreen may be prohibited depending on the UV filter contained in the product’s ingredient label. These states and countries ban sunscreens that use certain chemicals known to kill coral reef* and harm ecosystems.

light bulb icon

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CHEMICAL VS. MINERAL TRAVEL-SIZE SUNSCREEN?

According to EPA.gov , some sunscreen works using chemical active ingredients to absorb UV radiation and convert the energy into heat, which is then released back out through the body before DNA damage occurs. These products are applied onto skin, then absorb past the skill cell barrier and into the bloodstream, where the chemical reaction occurs and filters UV light.

These products contain harsh chemicals — such as oxybenzone — and cause hazardous pollution that can damage the environment when washed off into water systems. Since these chemicals can enter the bloodstream after application, they often leave behind toxins that continue to circulate throughout the body. Many people also experience uncomfortable irritation to the heat reaction caused by the UV filters.

Mineral sunscreen, sometimes called physical sunscreen, works differently because it contains all-natural active ingredients that rest on top of the outer layer of skin. The minerals have reflective properties and scatter light away from the body to protect against radiation.

These products are considered reef-safe* sunscreen as they do not harm ocean wildlife, so they’re permissible for swimming in tropical locations. Since the ingredients do not transcend past the skin cell barrier into the bloodstream, they’re much gentler and less likely to trigger a heat rash, redness, irritation, or allergic reaction.

light bulb icon

WHAT IS THE BEST TYPE OF SUNSCREEN TO TRAVEL WITH?

Generally speaking, mineral powder sunscreen is best for travel because there are fewer restrictions on how much you can bring and where you can use it. It’s also very easy to reapply on-the-go, and less likely to make a mess in your luggage caused by changes in air pressure at increased altitudes.

However, the TSA has determined that liquids, aerosols, creams, and powders are safe to bring aboard aircraft cabins in limited quantities. This means that you have the choice to choose which type of formula best aligns with your preferences.

At Colorescience, you can shop travel-sized sunscreen that comes in the form of powder, liquid, or stick application, so you have no shortage of options.

13 Best Travel Size Sunscreens

If you’re planning a vacation to the beach, island, or other sunny places, don’t forget to bring sunscreen. It will prevent sunburn and protect you against other risks of sun exposure. But if you prefer to pack lightly, you can choose among the best travel size sunscreens out there.

Regardless of the packaging, travel size sunscreens provide the same benefits as their full-size versions. They’ll protect you from intense UV rays in the middle of the day, which in turn reduces the risk of premature aging, wrinkles, or even skin cancer. However, the difference is that it won’t take up much space in your luggage and there’s no risk of being confiscated at the airport.

But with so many options out there, where do you start? To help you out, we’ve put together a list of the 13 best travel size sunscreens. But before we get started, check out some of these helpful tips.

How to Choose Best Travel Size Sunscreens

Carrying large bottles of sunscreen is uncomfortable and prohibited by most airlines. This is exactly why you should opt for a travel size sunscreen. Besides, you can carry it around and re-apply it whenever needed. But since it will directly affect your skin, you should consider allergy, absorption, and side effects before picking one. Other than that, don’t forget about ease of use because you may not have time for a skincare routine during your trip. So, let’s take a look at some of the factors you should consider before choosing the best travel-size sunscreen.

Wherever you buy a travel size sunscreen, make sure it is labeled ‘broad-spectrum’. This means that the product provides protection not only against UVA rays but also UVB. The former is believed to cause premature aging and skin cancer, while the latter is a cause of sunburn.

Sun protection factor (SPF)

You’ll want a sunscreen with an SPF of more than 30. That’s because the higher the number, the more protection it offers. For example, a sunscreen with SPF 15 will only prevent sunburn but does not reduce the risk of skin cancer or premature aging. So make sure you take this into account before buying.

Ease of Reapplication

Sunscreen is easily rubbed off by water or sweat. For optimal effect, you need to reapply it every two hours. This is why you should choose a sunscreen with compact packaging. That way, it will be easy to grab and reapply at any time. However, if the size does not really matter to you, you could always opt for regular size product, such as Sea and Ski Sunscreen .

Water-Resistant

Yes, you read that right. There’s no best travel size sunscreen out there that’s waterproof or sweat-proof. The best they can do is make sure it lasts long enough when you swim or sweat. So before you buy, check this information on the back of the packaging. This way, you’ll know exactly when to reapply. Most will suggest every two hours, especially during intense activity.

Banana Boat Ultra Sport

If you’re planning to visit the hardest mountains to climb or do some other intense activity while on vacation, then you definitely need a high-performance sunscreen like Banana Boat Ultra Sport . It offers great resistance to water and sweat, for up to 80 minutes! They also use a fast-absorbing formula, so your skin won’t feel greasy at all. With SPF 50, Banana Boat Ultra Sport promises protection against UVA and UVB. You can stay active all day long, without the risk of sunburn, skin cancer, or premature aging.

It also contains 100% zinc oxide and nourishing oats, making it gentle on sensitive skin.

They also mentioned that this sunscreen contains non-nano zinc oxide. It promises protection against UV radiation, without penetrating the body’s systems.

Most of the best travel-size sunscreens out there often leave a mark. Some even have to be scrubbed for 45 minutes before they disappear. However, Beauty by Earth claims you won’t have this problem with their product. Perfect for summer vacation!

Skin-friendly organic sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection.

Reef Safe Sunscreen SPF 30+

The 9 Best Eye Creams With SPF for Easy Sun Protection

These multitasking favorites deserve a spot in your vanity

These versatile creams shield skin from damaging UV rays while simultaneously addressing under-eye concerns like dark circles , puffiness , and fine lines . “The skin around the eye is thinner than the rest of the skin on the face, and neglecting to apply sunscreen around the eye area can worsen common complaints like dark circles, hyperpigmentation, and puffiness,” board-certified dermatologist Corey L. Hartman tells Bazaar .

Applying sunscreen around the eyes also helps protect the skin’s elasticity, preventing issues like droopiness. When looking for the best eye cream with SPF for your needs, consider opting for hydrators containing mineral formulas instead of chemical ones. “To avoid discomfort or stinging, it is recommended to use a mineral sunscreen around the eye, versus a chemical sunscreen,” Hartman says, explaining that common chemical UV filters (like avobenzone and oxybenzone) can irritate the eye.

According to Hartman, you want to be sure your product has a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 or more. “Broad-spectrum means that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays,” he says. “The SPF number refers only to the level of protection against UVB rays. An SPF 30 blocks 97 percent of UVB rays; going lower than SPF 30 greatly increases the risk of damage from UVB rays, which leads to skin burning and ultimately skin cancer.”

To add to your list of sun protection staples, we asked professionals for their top eye-cream-specific picks and shifted through hundreds of customer reviews to find the ones worthy of any beauty collection. The following formulas provide the ultimate skincare benefits and feature SPF 30 or higher. Read on for our list of the best eye creams with SPF to add to your morning routine.

Supergoop! specializes in innovative sun protection, and this SPF 40 favorite is no exception. Featuring a blend of non-nano zinc oxide and wild butterfly ginger flower, the Bright-Eyed cream shields against UV damage and even blocks blue light. It’s also infused with probiotics to help brighten dark circles and reduce puffiness.

One satisfied customer writes: “This has been a staple in my routine for years. It’s the only way I can wear SPF near my eyes. Regular sunscreens get in my eyes and make them sting and water all day, but this is so gentle!” — OhEmGee7

EltaMD’s tinted eye cream uses antioxidants, peptides, Persian silk tree extract, and protective SPF 30 to tackle multiple under-eye problems at once. On top of offering sun protection, the lightweight formula also helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles, disguise dark circles, and deflate puffiness. It’s also fragrance-free, dermatologist-tested, and ophthalmologist-tested.

One satisfied customer writes: “I like to use this when I’m not really wearing a lot of other makeup. It’s tinted, but just enough to give a little extra coverage. It blends in easily and feels comfortable, no burning the eyes like regular sunscreen can cause.” — Kelsey Mlnarik

This cult-favorite facial sunscreen gets Hartman’s stamp of approval for the entire face, including the eye area—in fact, it’s what he personally uses. “It’s a lightweight emulsion that delivers moisture and mineral zinc oxide for a chemical-free, physical sunscreen that eliminates the possibility of allergy,” he says.

One satisfied customer writes: “I will never leave the house without this on my face! Love it!” — Linda D.

Coola Day SPF 30 & Night Eye Cream Duo

Treat the skin around your eyes to 24-hour TLC with this pick from Coola. Each jar contains a day cream infused with vitamin C and SPF 30 to protect against UV rays, minimize signs of aging, and reduce darkness. There’s also a night cream included that uses resveratrol to hydrate and soothe the area.

One satisfied customer writes: “So happy to have finally found an eye cream with SPF that’s reasonably priced! I just wish I could buy this as only the SPF cream since I have a night eye cream I like already. Not sure why they don’t offer that.” — Ms Doover

Seamlessly mask dark circles while protecting your under-eyes from sun damage with this tinted multitasker. Available in fair, medium, tan, and deep tones, the popular essential keeps the area plump using hyaluronic acid, along with peptides and vitamins to minimize dark circles, puffiness, and crow’s feet. Plus, its broad-spectrum mineral SPF 35 formula protects against not only UV rays, but also common environmental aggressors.

One satisfied customer writes: “So easy to apply, and the shade blends right in; fantastic eye coverage with SPF as a major plus. A little goes a long way.” — Jacqueline

Because the skin around the eyes is thinner than in other parts of your face, it’s particularly prone to fine lines and wrinkles. This eye cream uses zinc oxide to provide SPF 30 protection and prevent photoaging. It’s also packed with peptides, vitamin C, squalane, and niacinamide to hydrate, firm the skin, smooth uneven texture, and brighten. Bonus: Its angled and flat metal applicator allows for easy and precise application under the eyes.

This lightly tinted eye cream has a lightweight, serumlike texture that sinks in quickly and provides comfortable wear. It uses zinc and titanium oxides for SPF 30 broad-spectrum sun protection. The cream’s formula also features the brand’s signature “bio-renewal peptide,” a skin-identical protein that improves skin tone and texture, plus prebiotics to reduce lingering redness. Those prone to dryness can also appreciate the formula’s deeply hydrating shea butter, avocado oil, grape seed oil, and argan oil.

One satisfied customer writes: “I call this my lazy lady eye cream because it does three things in one! It’s my anti-aging eye cream, SPF 30, and under-eye brightener too. There’s a slight tint. My under-eye area feels hydrated, and my lines are less noticeable. I love it because I don’t like using too many products.” — T heresa92

Toss this travel-friendly SPF 50 mineral sunscreen from CeraVe in your bag for easy, on-the-go sun protection. Though not exactly an eye cream, it combines three ceramides to strengthen the skin’s barrier, and its slender size makes under-eye application a breeze. Those with sensitive and reactive skin will appreciate that the formula is free of oil, fragrance, and chemical sunscreen ingredients.

One satisfied customer writes: “My go-to! It’s not sticky and really stays on even when you are in and out of the water throughout the day. I would recommend this product over and over!” — wendyemma_

The Seaweed Bath Co. Smooth & Protect Invisible Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

Board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon Margarita Lolis loves using this lightweight mineral sunscreen for its sheer, easy-to-blend formula. “This sunscreen not only provides sun protection but protects against environmental aggressors as well,” Lolis says. She also notes that this pick contains seaweed extracts to improve the absorption of UV rays while providing anti-photoaging effects.

One satisfied customer writes: “I always use mineral sunscreens, and most of them leave a white sheen on my skin. This one is invisible and feels silky smooth when I put it on. I cannot feel it once it dries. So far, it has been effective at protecting my skin after spending hours outside.” — Ss

Should you apply sunscreen on the eyelid?

best eye cream with spf

In short, yes. According to Hartman, the eyelid is one of the most common spots for skin cancer. So while you definitely shouldn’t skip over this delicate spot, your SPF application technique may need some modifications. Dr. Hartman recommends applying a small dot of sunscreen to the eyelid and gently tapping it in, avoiding the lash line.

As mentioned above, you’ll want to use mineral sunscreen to avoid potential eye irritation. Look for formulas labeled “100 percent mineral” and made with exclusively zinc oxide, titanium oxide, or a blend of both. If you’re unsure if a sunscreen is safe for use around the eye area, reach out to a board-certified dermatologist or ophthalmologist.

Can you use facial sunscreen around the eye area?

best eye cream with spf

While eye creams made with SPF are convenient and will help consolidate steps in your skincare routine, they aren’t essential. In other words, your mineral-based facial sunscreen will do just fine as long as you’re applying it safely. However, many SPF-infused eye creams are meant to simultaneously treat other common under-eye concerns , like fine lines and dark circles.

If you’re going the facial sunscreen route, Dr. Lolis recommends looking for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects the skin from UVA and UVB rays and boasts additional skincare benefits. “A mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide, which protects against UVA and UVB rays and also contains iron oxide which also helps protect against the visible light spectrum, is preferred, especially for anyone with melasma and many other sun-induced conditions,” she says.

If you're planning a trip to a place with water and sun, of course you want to pack sunblock to protect your skin . But, some sunscreens contain chemicals that can be harmful to the delicate ecosystem of the ocean. So, if you want to protect your skin, and the environment, it's important to look for products that contain certain ingredients. That's why we've rounded up a list of the best reef-safe and reef-friendly sunscreens that you can feel confident wearing on your next vacation. Let's break down what you should look for and get shopping

What does "Reef-safe" or "Reef-friendly" Sunscreen Mean?

Sunscreens that are called "reef-safe" or "reef-friendly" typically do not contain oxybenzone and octinoxate, two common UV-blocking chemicals which have been shown to cause damage to coral reefs, and the state of Hawaii has even banned the sale of sunscreens containing these ingredients.

However, these terms are not regulated or managed by any organizations, so you can't always trust products that say they're "safe." Reports have shown that additional chemicals, like octocrylene , homosalate, avobenzone and oxybenzone , may also contain damaging effects, so read your labels. None of the picks below contain any of these ingredients.

What Else to Consider When Choosing a Sunscreen

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United States, according to the American Association of Dermatology, so it's important to reduce your risks and look for sunscreen with an SPF 15 (at least). Additionally, consider the water-resistance of your sunblock. A sunscreen  that stays on your skin longer is less likely to wash off when you're swimming.

So, keep on scrolling for the best reef-safe and reef-friendly sunscreens that will have a positive impact this Earth Day and beyond. Protect your skin (and the ocean, too), and enjoy your time in the water.

What’s Wrong With American Sunscreens?

Believe it or not, the reason domestically produced SPFs lag behind those made abroad is a matter of government policy. Most of the blame can be pinned on outdated Food and Drug Administration parameters. The FDA labels sunscreens as over-the-counter drugs, so the clearance for new chemical sun filters is long, expensive, and tedious.

“Labeling sunscreens as OTC drugs has hindered innovation. It has been over 20 years since the last filter was launched in the U.S.,” explains Charlotte Palermino , a licensed esthetician who’s also the CEO and co-founder of Dieux Skin . “But reclassifying sunscreens as a cosmetic wouldn’t be enough. You’d have to list it as a cosmetic with certain terms that apply. You could add some provisions that force guardrails on American companies, because we have unfettered capitalism and a free market here, which allows people to do some wild stuff before any regulations catch up.”

Here’s a modicum of hope that change could eventually happen: “The FDA even uses the language that ‘sunscreen prevents cancer and accelerated aging,’ so they acknowledge that it is a cosmetic,” says Palermino.

Why Korean Sunscreens Perform Better

Here are the key reasons that Korean sunscreens are increasingly popular by comparison to US ones.

Safer Chemical Filters: First and foremost, there’s the fact that Korean sunscreens have long lapped U.S. options with their list of innovative chemical filters. While the names of these filters are as complicated to keep track of as those in the U.S.—we won’t expect you to memorize Uvinul A Plus, Tinosorb S, Mexoryl SX, or Parsol SLX just yet—there is one thing that is easy to recall: The best filters used in Korean sunscreens do not absorb into the body. Instead, they neutralize UV rays at the skin’s surface, much like mineral sunscreen ingredients. (Note: Many other countries use these same [or similar] ingredients, namely Japan and across the E.U.. But because of the K-Beauty industry’s massive size and categorical nature, Korean brands get much of the attention and credit for this innovation.)

“Elegant” and Targeted Formulas: And then there is the general “feel” of these products on the skin. Korean sunscreens are beloved for their comfortable-to-wear formulas and the benefits that they provide the skin (in addition to the sun defense of it all). They don’t feel heavy—also part of that chemical filter innovation. Furthermore, instead of a one-size-fits-all all recipe for every customer, many K-Beauty sunscreens offer targeted formulas that also promise benefits such as mattifying oily skin, blurring the appearance of pores, or even offering deep hydration, explains Palermino. In this way, many (though not all) Korean sunscreens can do double duty as moisturizers.

One warning for anyone who spends a lot of time at the beach or in the pool: It is not common for Korean sunscreens to be waterproof, notes Palermino. If you plan to go for a swim or exercise outdoors, you’ll need to reapply as soon as you’re out of the water, or switch to a water-resistant chemical SPF if you’ll be under the sun.

SPF and PA+ Ratings: Korean brands use two sun-protection ratings: The first is SPF (Sun Protection Factor), which we use in the U.S., but which only measures a product’s ability to thwart UVB rays (the type that burn skin and cause skin cancer). Meanwhile, Korean sunscreens use a second system that measures a product’s ability to defend against UVA rays (the type of sun rays that accelerate signs of aging, including hyperpigmentation, textural changes, and fine lines).

This is called the PA+ rating system (Protection Grade of UVA rays), and it uses anywhere from one to four “plus” symbols (PA++++ is the highest) to tell you how long the product can shield you against UVA rays. Only a handful of U.S. brands bother to measure and report this; Supergoop is a primary example.

Cost: By comparison to U.S. sunscreen brands, Korean options are fairly affordable. So if you don’t have a retailer near you, it is often cost-effective to just order from the brand and pay the pay for shipping—just get a few bottles of it to offset the shipping cost, Palermino suggests.

Where to Buy Korean Sunscreens

Many large cities have verified retailers, which the Korean brands will list on their websites so that you know you’re getting the real (and fresh) product. Senti Senti (formerly OO35MM) has N.Y.C. locations in Chinatown and Williamsburg, for example. Online, you can also shop from Olive Young , YesStyle , and Stylevana —all popular and verified retailers. Of course, you can also order directly from each brand’s site.

The Best Korean Sunscreens

The Best Korean Sunscreens of 2024—and Why They're Better Than US SPFs

Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotic SPF50+ PA++++

It’s impossible to start any Korean sunscreen list without Beauty of Joseon at the top. This is seemingly the web’s favorite Korean SPF, and one of Palermino’s, too. “I really love that they do their testing in Korea and Spain,” she says. “I wish more brands would test in multiple facilities like this and publish the results, because the reality is that the way most sunscreens are tested is so prone to error.” She does warn that it can leave a bit of a cast if you have really deep skin tone.

Isa Knox UV Sun Pro 365 Daily Extreme Sun Fluid SPF50+ PA++++

Isa Knox makes a rare water resistant Korean sunscreen. Palermino, who actively avoids tanning her skin, praises it as the only sunscreen she is able to wear on the beach and not get tan. “And that is impressive, because I tan really easily, and most sunscreens still allow me to tan despite my best efforts.”

Tacobo Bio Watery Sun Cream SPF 50 PA++++

“This one is great for oily skin, and is easy to reapply throughout the day,” says Palermino of the product’s texture. “But remember that these watery fluids aren’t really moisturizers,” she adds (so layer it over top of your daily moisturizer).

Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Watery Sun Gel

Robb Report ‘s senior editor Justin Fenner swears by Isntree’s velvety SPF 50+, which relies on Tinosorb S, an advanced filter that’s more photostable than older chemical alternatives. It’s also got a good dose of hyaluronic acid, and on muggy days that means you can skip your moisturizer and jump straight to this product instead.

Bioré UV Aqua Rich SPF 30

Remember, it’s not just Korea that has these great chemical filters in sunscreens. Palermino credits Bioré with starting the “non-U.S.” sunscreen craze. “It’s very light, it’s great if you have more oily skin because it dries really quickly.”

How we chose our winners.

We utilized our editors as shopping and trying experts. All products went through a five-week trial period before we selected our winners.

When we look at any products, especially wellness items, we examine them thoroughly. To be our favorite in a category, a product must upgrade our readers’ lives and fulfill their needs. Each individual category has its own criteria to meet during our trial period. We specifically looked at price, size-inclusivity and overall quality and effectiveness.

Independent Travel to Moscow and St. Petersburg

My wife and I have traveled independently to many European countries and, after reading many of the comments in this forum, feel like we may be able to do so in Moscow and St. Petersburg as well, although we feel somewhat less comfortable than the other countries where we have traveled in Europe.

My biggest question is how much we will miss by visiting the main sites without a tour guide. In the other European countries we have visited on our own we have been comfortable and satisfied with the level of knowledge we have gained by studying and visiting on our own, although we believe a tour guide or tour company in any country would normally be able to provide greater insight than visiting a site on our own, but about in Moscow and St. Petersburg?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Unless you speak at least some Russian and read the alphabet it would be difficult without a guide. Very few signs in English especially in Moscow. Also not too many people speak English there.

I visited St Petersburg last Autumn for a protracted period , and did not find it anymore daunting than any other European city . As Ilja says , learning the Cyrillic alphabet is a big plus . I also found that it was fairly easy to grasp . It will , among other things , enable you to read signs with relative ease . I would answer the main part or your question ( about tour guides ) thus - I am not enamored of tour guides or tours. While I only use a tour under duress ( A sites rules prohibiting an independent visit - ie Glasgow School of Art , Municipal House in Prague , etc ) . Doing your own preparation and homework is the best way , in my opinion . My wife and I ventured through St Petersburg with nary a concern ,and made two day trips outside of the central district ( one was twenty five miles away , and no English speakers in sight ) Figuring out the logistical details , did not present any difficulties . While I never use tours , I am an inveterate eavesdropper , have done so many times , and find , that on balance , the information that they impart is fairly elementary . If you want greater detail , they are unlikely to supply it . I also prefer to go at my own pace , not being rushed and being able to dwell on things that most other visitors barely give a passing glance . If you are interested , let me know . I would be happy to provide you with information that will enable you to travel independently

Thank you, Steven. I am encouraged by your comments and feel the same way you do about tour groups. We are very much willing to prepare in advance and learn the basics of the Cyrillic alphabet to help us have a better experience.

I would be very interested in learning more about your experience in Russia and receiving any additional information you can provide on independent travel there, starting perhaps with obtaining the visa.

I am not opposed to hiring a private or small group guide for a specific site or for a day trip outside St Petersburg and Moscow, but, like you said, I much prefer the freedom of staying at places as long or short as I want and seeing the sites that interest me most. For example, neither my wife nor I are big into shopping, yet most tour itineraries leave afternoon time for just that. Not interested!

Please provide whatever you may feel would be helpful for us.

Russ , I see you are quite near San Francisco - you can start by looking at the VISA procedure , it's fairly straightforward . Since there is a consulate in San Francisco - look here http://www.consulrussia.org/eng/visa-sub1.html

And here - http://ils-usa.com/main.php

Having always traveled independently, we thought we could do a better job than any tour. How misguided (pun intended) we were. Now that we have had the experience of having someone native to the area walk us around and explain things through a personal perspective we realize how much we missed. For St. Petersburg I highly recommend http://www.peterswalk.com/tours.html . This is not a traditional guided tour, but an opportunity to receive some orientation to the area as well as insight into the "Russian soul". I think if you did this upon arrival the rest of your time would be much more meaningful. We really liked the http://www.pushka-inn.com . The location is superb (just around the corner from the Hermitage square), the rooms lovely, the included breakfast at the restaurant next door ample and overall an excellent value. We used this company to get our visa: https://www.passportvisasexpress.com/site/san_francisco_customer_service Note that it costs about the same for a 3-year visa as a one-year, and you never know if you might want to return within that more extended window of time. It is not cheap, so factor that into your planning.

If you like traveling without a guide in other countries and find this satisfying, the same will be true in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Of course it's not either/or - you can certainly take a guided walk or boat tour, for instance.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of learning Cyrillic if you're going on your own. The book I used was Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian Script, which was great. It breaks down the alphabet into letters that are the same as English, letters that look the same but are pronounced differently, etc. It's out of print, but you can get used copies on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Teach-Yourself-Beginners-Russian-Script/dp/0071419861/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1459701143&sr=8-2&keywords=teach+yourself+russian+script

Russia is indeed a bit more "foreign" than say, Italy. However, in Moscow and St. Petersburg, I found enough English to be able to get by. Many restaurants had English menus and/or English speaking staff, for instance. This was most emphatically not true in Vladimir and Suzdal (two cities in the Golden Ring outside Moscow). I went with my sister, a Russian speaker, and if she hadn't been there, I would have been in big trouble. So, if you want to see places outside these two big cities, use a guided tour (even if just for that part). Also, Moscow and St. Petersburg are huge cities. Coming from New York, I wasn't intimidated, but those not used to a megacity may not be so cavalier (even I found them overwhelming at times, especially Moscow).

I found both Lonely Planet and Rough Guide to be helpful, and both to have various errors. Look at both, buy whichever one has a more recent edition, and then be prepared to have to discard some of the advice therein. Also, these places change more quickly than places in Western Europe. Be very careful of outdated advice. For instance, I was there in 2001 and 2010, so I won't give you any specifics on getting a visa - that changes constantly.

Just as a teaser, two things I saw and loved that I doubt would be included in any escorted tour are the Gorky House in Moscow (an Art Nouveau wonder) and the Sheremyetov Palace in St. Petersburg (it's now a museum of musical instruments, and the decor is amazing, particularly in the Etruscan Room).

Thanks for all the good advice. Any additional thoughts are welcomed.

One of history's seminal works pertaining to Russian history and culture and a MUST for anyone contemplating a visit or simply interested , is this fine work from 1980 - http://www.amazon.com/Land-Firebird-The-Beauty-Russia/dp/096441841X

This is about you and not about Petersburg. Do you like guided tours? We don't and didn't find that a guide added to our experience in China where we did hire private guides mostly for the logistics; it was easy to have someone drive us places. But once at a site, we didn't need the guide. I felt the same way about our 9 nights in Petersburg. We did hire a guide for the trip to the Catherine Palace again for the ease of logistics for us Olds. Here is our visit: https://janettravels.wordpress.com/2016/01/23/an-easy-trip-to-the-catherine-palace/ There are also snapshots of the Church on Spilled Blood in this photo journal. Having someone pick us up at the apartment and get us in without line ups and shepherd us through the palace steering clear of the tour groups was lovely. But we didn't need commentary because we can read and prepare.

You certainly don't need a guide for the Hermitage (we spent 4 days there), the Russian Museum, the Kazan Cathedral or Church on Spilled Blood or the Faberge Museum. We enjoyed a number of self guided walking tours including a couple from Rick Steves guidebooks. We took the canal cruise suggested by RS that had an English commentator. I would not take one without that as you will be totally clueless. The commentator was not all that good but at least we had some idea what we were seeing. So for people like us who like to do our own thing and can read a guidebook and don't particularly like to be led about, a tour is not needed. If you enjoy tour groups, then go for it. Petersburg is easy to negotiate. It helps if you can read the cyrillic alphabet and it is also useful to have the google translate ap on your phone. We found ourselves translating packages in grocery stores with it and the occasional museum sign or menu. I have one food I need to avoid and so it was handy to have the translator to talk with waiters (I could either show them the sentence, or play it for them or play it to myself and then repeat it to the waiter -- that all worked well)

Dear Russ, I cannot help you with Moscow, but about four years ago, my husband and I went to St Petersburg on our own. But, we did use a private guide for 4 half days. We both feel that our guide absolutely made our trip (we stayed 6 or 7 nights). We used a company owned by Tatyana Chiurikova, www.tour-stpetersburg.com I cannot say enough good things about her and our experience. I emailed her and we worked out a schedule/ sights that was tailored to our interests. She also offered some recommendations, which we took. The guide will meet you at your hotel. And frequently, at certain places, with the guide, we were able to skip the long entrance lines. We had an half day driving tour of the city (car, driver, & guide). You are taken to & go in places such as Peter & Paul Fortress, some of the cathedrals, etc. We had a half day with the guide at the Hermitage which ensured that we would see the major sights there. And, of course, you can stay after your guide leaves or return another day. Also, we had the guide for Peterhof (a must & go by boat) and Catherine's Palace. I hope that you will go to the website. As I said, our guide made our trip. I am positive that we would have missed quite a bit on our own everyday. And I'm sure we would have wasted a lot of time trying to get to various place. This was the best of both worlds, a guide where needed and plenty of time on our own. Whatever you do, I'm sure that you will love St Petersburg! Ashley

I am curious about the lines as we encountered no lines on our trip -- but it was in September. We got tickets for the Hermitage at machines and skipped those lines and our guide for the Catherine Palace which was our only guided experience (as noted before, chosen for the logistics of getting there) had arranged tickets and we didn't have a line, but then we also didn't see lines. We did not find lines at any other site.

Both Moscow and St Petersburg I've done on my own, that is together with the Dear Partner. I can't remember any problem getting where we wanted to go. The Metro systems are well signed, and with a little exercise and patience you can recognize the station names. With a good map and a good guide - we had the Rough Guides - that part of the logistics is solved. The language is a major problem, but the usual tricks of pointing, looking helpless, and making a joke of it all do wonders. I would hate to be led by a guide, but for others it is a comfortable thought.

We also did both cities on our own. I found the DK Eyewitness guide for Moscow has the best map. I used the one from our library (kept the book at home). Took the smaller RS book for St. Petersburg ( his book on northern cities). His map and restaurant ideas were all good. We also downloaded the Google maps in our Android Samsung tablets/phones for both cities and then could get directions to any place we typed in. The blue ball guided us everywhere. I'm sure we missed somethings by not having a guide, but we just enjoy walking around and getting a sense of a place. If you like art, The Hermitage is great. We went 3 times and still missed alot. In St. Peterburg we stayed at the 3 Mosta which we loved (quite and not far from the Church of Spilled Blood.) We also loved the Georgian food in both cities. There's a great Georgian restaurant near the 3 Mosta hotel. We're now in Belarus- very scenic. Enjoy your trip!!

How to get to Suzdal from Moscow

travel size mineral sunscreen

If you are ever in Moscow, you should look at The Golden Ring , a ring of towns and cities north east of Moscow which played an important part in the formation of Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church. The towns themselves are almost like museums and none more so than the jewel of the Golden Ring, Suzdal . You have to visit this town if you are in Moscow and I will tell you exactly how to get to Suzdal from Moscow.

You can do this in a return day trip to Moscow, just, but I recommend staying the night in Suzdal. That will give you the afternoon on the 1st day and the morning and early afternoon on the 2nd day to explore which should be enough time. You can get a bus from Moscow to Suzdal. However, there is only one bus a day and it is not very comfortable. A better option is to get a train to the nearby city of Vladimir and from there get a bus to Suzdal. There are multiple trains every day from Moscow and buses are almost every 30 minutes so you will not have to wait long in Vladimir.

Getting the train to Vladimir

Go to the state run website for Russian railways . In the departure station, click (or type) ‘MOSKVA’, in the arrival station type ‘VLADIMIR”, select your departure date (and return if you will go back to Moscow the next day) and click on the buy ticket button. You will have multiple trains to choose from. The fastest trains do the journey in about 1 hour 45 minutes. Be sure to check which of the Moscow train stations your train will depart from. More than likely this will be Mockva Kurskaia. Whichever station it is, you can get there very easily by using the metro .

Getting Bus from Vladimir to Suzdal

When you arrive at the train station, follow everyone else that is leaving the train station. When you get outside, if you look across the street, you will see the bus station. The facilities in the bus and train station are pretty basic. the train station is a little better so if you want a coffee or something to eat, I would get it there.

In the bus station go to the ticket office and get a single ticket to Suzdal. Something like “odin billet Suzdal” should be enough to be understood. The ticket costs 98.50 rubles so its easier to have a 100 ruble note to get change from.

Staying the night in Suzdal

There are a lot of accommodation options available in Suzdal. The place i stayed is Suzdal Hotel . It is actually a house and they have a few rooms available. The breakfast that is included is very very good. Trust me on this. They will even collect you from the bus station in Suzdal and bring you back the next day.

Returning to Vladimir (and Moscow)

To return to Vladimir, just repeat these steps in the opposite direction – return to the bus station in Suzdal, buy a ticket to Vladimir and continue your onward journey in Russia. Simples! 😉

I went to Suzdal over 13years ago for Christmas, I was on an on the go tour and they organised the train for us which was a very interesting journey. I would love to go back and explore longer. I am definitely impressed that you have done it on your own and it sounds like you had a bit of an adventure :).

Hi Melissa, it certainly was an adventure that’s for sure! Though sometimes, there is something to be said for letting other people take care of things for you and getting to relax and not be too stressed.

Moscow is a place with an intriguing and enigmatic history. Suzdal seems to be a charming place with a rich heritage. As you have mentioned it seems to be a living museum of sorts. Nice step by step instruction on getting to Suzdal from Moscow. This is indeed an invaluable resource for first-time travelers to Russia.

Thank you very much for your kind words. I hope some people find it useful!

' src=

Thanks for recommending the Suzdal Hotel, since I prefer to stay in small cozy places with good breakfast. And the service of taking the guests from and to the bus station in Suzdal is a great plus!

Yeah I agree. I would rather stay in a family type place than a bigger place too!

' src=

I have never heard of this town and it sounds like a great place to visit if you are already in Moscow. Your instructions are very helpful and I like how you put a photo of the ticket.

You’re welcome Candy. If you don’t speak the language, Russia can be difficult to get around.

Michael Hodgson

Fantastic detail and extremely useful post for anyone wanting to explore outside of Moscow. Suzdal does sound fascinating.

Thanks Michael!

' src=

This seems like quite an experience! I am surprised that I haven’t heard of Suzdal before but as soon as I go to Moscow, I will have to do a day trip to there. Is a day trip enough to explore Suzdal?

Hey Lydia, you certainly can! If you go early enough in the day to Vladimir, you can probably get 6-7 hours in Suzdal.

' src=

This is a great post with quite a few good details. Pics looks so amazing. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed!

' src=

Wow, you are adventurous! I spent years upon years in Russia and never made it to Suzdal. Never realized Vladimir was less than 2 hrs away from Moscow.

Thanks Jenia. Russia is a huge place. You could live there your entire life and not see it all!

' src=

Thanks for the instructions. If I ever want to visit Suzdal I now know how to get there from Moscow via Vladimir.

You’re welcome!

Suzdal sounds really lovely! I need to travel to more places where there will be snow rather than just constantly chasing the sun 😉

I know what you mean! After 4 months of winter in Russia though, I was craving the sun so much!

' src=

I had never heard of Suzdal until now. Thank you for introducing me to a new place. It looks so calm and quiet under the snow. What are some things to do in Suzdal?

I think it is the sort of place you go to get away from the craziness of big cities and have some slower, quiet time. If my memory is correct, they also have a cucumber festival once a year every July. Apparently the cucumbers of the area are very good!

clear skin review 1

What should I look for in a sunscreen for sensitive skin?

For sensitive skin, dermatologists often recommended looking for mineral sunscreens that contain either zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. All Anthelios sunscreens are tested on sensitive skin. All formulated and tested for optimal skin tolerance.

What’s the difference between a chemical (organic) and mineral (physical) sunscreen?

Mineral sunscreens contain mineral ingredients like zinc oxide & titanium dioxide sit on the top layer of skin & reflect and scatter UV rays. Chemical sunscreens contain organic compounds like octocrylene & avobenzone absorb UV rays on the skin.

What are the advantages and disadvantages to chemical vs mineral sunscreens?

Mineral sunscreens work as soon as you apply onto skin, but because they sit directly on the skin may rub or sweat off more easily than chemical sunscreens that take at least 15min to properly absorb, meaning skin may not be immediately protected.
