Virtual Reality Showroom

For IKEA, we created a high-definition, interactive showroom that uses the immersive power of virtual reality to offer an innovative 3D product experience. With new ways of exploration and visualization, customers can bring IKEA rooms to life – opening their mind and home to new possibilities.

A new dimension for democratic design

IKEA believes that design should be for all – "democratic design" they call it. Demonstrated by the plethora of showrooms housing thousands of different items, there's something to everyone's liking along IKEA's walkway. Yet, customers have to wait until they get home and unwrap their flat packs to truly become part of the IKEA experience. As the first digital agency worldwide, Demodern set out to engage IKEA shoppers and democratize the actual store visit as well – with an in-store VR application.

Heart of the hub

The Virtual Home Experience lies at the center of IKEA's home furnishing hub – a playful interior lab where IKEA focuses on inspiring and co-creation with its customers. The VR experience works like a creative primer by inviting them to visualize different combinations. It sets customers free to think beyond the given things, making the most out of their visit to the hub and helping them truly find their very own room for life.

Heart of the hub

A space for ideas

Insights can't be had on-demand. However, virtual reality can act as a form of engineered serendipity, and improve people's chances of having them.

VR-induced creativity

The application provides an immersive and emotional product experience that revolutionizes the way customers engage in interior decoration. After slipping into IKEA's virtual showroom, visitors are able to explore and configure furniture items and their environmental context in real-time. In the blink of an eye, they can try different fabrics, swap the wall color and even change the time of day to see their combinations in a different light. It empowers the visitor to visualize their own taste, inspire and expand their mind with new ideas.

VR-induced creativity

Context over technology

Given the context, the Virtual Home Experience pushes VR as the most meaningful and effective platform for getting into a creative mental state – providing a radical experience that pulls visitors out from the walkway and puts them into a full-scale flow of colorful emotions and exciting surprises.

Binaural immersion

Welcomed by IKEA's very own speaker and engulfed in high-definition 3D spatialized sound, the room and its environment come to life while the user can truly feel part of the space.

Context over technology

Oculus in the wild

As the first public VR installation of its kind, various aspects of the application and the hub had to be rethought to make the Oculus Rift ready for unattended use at a store that welcomes thousands of people a day. Special attention was given to anything, from easy on-boarding, health notifications to foolproof interactions and smooth cable management. Installed as a prototype in Germany's most vibrant city, Berlin, IKEA and Demodern source learnings for further development on a daily basis – using application analytics as well as a broad scale of qualitative user feedback given directly at the point-of-sale.

Ikea Raum Vr 1

Virtual realism

Crafted in and composed of high-end, photorealistic 3D-renderings, the application provides a captivating 360º stereoscopic interior decoration experience with brilliant product staging – no matter the configuration.

Ikea Room Red

Harmonious user experience

The Virtual Home Experience intertwines a recognizable visual interface and motion design with touchless interactions. The result is a multi-dimensional signature brand and product experience that looks and feels like IKEA. Simple interactions and clever focus mechanisms allow the user to customize the room's interior and many facets of its environment in a glimpse.

Ikea Demodern Vr Application 2

Product of democracy

As trends and seasons change, so does the Virtual Home Experience. It not only came to be through many iterations, it will also continue to evolve through a culture of collaboration between IKEA, its customers and Demodern. The intimate moment inside the virtual room leverages an opportunity to co-create with visitors – letting users contribute to the development of the room by submitting feedback from within the experience.

IKEA Festival: Beyond 24 hours of experiences The 24-hour IKEA Festival begins at 8am CET, and no registration is required. Starting off each hour, something new is broadcasted and other festival experiences follow. Attendees can see artists, designers, DJ’s, chefs, makers, experts, creators and many other talents turn their living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms and backyards into virtual stages. Visitors can also pick and choose from a library of on-demand content.

In total, the IKEA Festival is taking place in over 100 homes in more than 50 countries. On the global Festival site, everything is available in English. On local Festival sites, most or all content is available in local languages. After 16 September, the IKEA Festival platform will continue to be available as a hub for everything IKEA knows about making life at home better. New content and life at home experiences will be added throughout the year, building a global community that connects homes all over the world.

“Through hosting the first virtual IKEA Festival, we want to open doors to new experiences and bring people together,” says Olivia Ross Wilson, Communications Director, Ingka Group (IKEA Retail). “For over 70 years, IKEA has conducted home visits to understand the needs, dreams and challenges of the many people and we’re seeing how much has changed in the past 18 months. We want to help as many people as possible to experience and celebrate the weird and wonderful sides of real life at home,” Olivia continues. “Of course, we’re opening our doors, too, and giving everyone a glimpse into the everyday life of IKEA.”

IKEA Museum Digital: Behind the vast, vibrant history Throughout the Festival, IKEA will share past decades of notable home furnishing and IKEA milestones. Starting today, visitors can also access IKEA Museum Digital , the most extensive online source of knowledge and facts about IKEA. Now people across the world can experience the vast and vibrant history of IKEA in an online version of the in-person exhibition at the IKEA Museum in Älmhult, Sweden. The new platform contains stories about IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad and some of the most iconic products and memorable designs from the 1940s to today.

“Many of the stories reveal the inner workings of IKEA and have never been shared publicly before. Whether it’s about a triumph, a great mistake, a dangerous adventure, or a revolutionary collapse – we have done our best to tell it like it was,” says Jutta Viheriä, Strategic Initiatives Leader at IKEA Museum.

Ikea’s new virtual design tool deletes your furniture and replaces it with Ikea’s

To help visualize how the furniture could look in your home.

Virtual furniture can be placed in an image of your room.

Ikea is launching a new virtual design tool today that can make it easier to imagine how its furniture might look in your home. Ikea Kreativ’s Scene Scanner feature lets you scan a room using Ikea’s iOS app, erase your existing furniture, and then place virtual furniture in its place. If you don’t want to scan your own home, there are also over 50 virtual showrooms to place furniture in. Naturally, the process is designed to encourage you to order this furniture for real after browsing the virtual versions.

After playing around with a pre-release version of the Ikea Kreativ Scene Scanner app developed by Ingka Group (Ikea’s largest store franchisee), I can say that the new experience is potentially very useful, even if it’s a little more restrictive than the company’s pitch makes it seem. There’s no ability to walk around a virtual piece of furniture in augmented reality like we saw with the previous Ikea Place app , but Kreativ does a better job overall of showing its virtual furniture accurately in the context of your home. It won’t let you skip the tedious process of measuring your rooms to make sure furniture will fit, but it’s a nice way of seeing if an item’s overall design and color scheme will match its surroundings.

The process starts with taking a panoramic shot of the room.

Ikea Kreativ Scene Scanner starts with a slightly cumbersome scanning process. You take a series of photos of a room to construct a panoramic shot and then wave your phone around in a figure-eight motion to capture more visual data. This process is for iPhones only for now (you don’t need a model equipped with a lidar sensor — most modern iPhones should work), but an Android version is planned for release this summer. Once the scan is complete, you’re left with an image to either tweak directly in the app itself or on Ikea’s website on a desktop.

Unless you’re furnishing an empty room, the first step with Ikea’s virtual designer is to empty out existing furniture. The effect is very similar to the Magic Eraser tool found in Google’s Pixel 6 devices , and much like Google’s Magic Eraser tool, the results can be inconsistent. In the image below, for example, Ikea’s software hasn’t understood where my rug should end after deleting the armchair obscuring it, and it also has trouble filling in the concealed left side of the TV cabinet.

The completed scan of my living room.

In spite of some messy edges, the empty spaces behave as they should once I start adding virtual furniture to the room. Ikea Kreativ currently includes “thousands” of items of furniture, rugs, accessories, and wall decor, according to spokesperson Kelly Gardiner, and there are plans to add support for additional product categories like ceiling-mounted furniture and textiles over the coming year.

I went with a pair of Laiva bookcases for my living room, which Ikea’s software allowed me to rotate and move around the space — and did a good job placing level with my floor. For the most part, Ikea’s software showed the bookcase in proportion, although it occasionally clipped through various other bits of furniture in the room. It’s hard to verify whether the app got the dimensions of my room exactly right, but they were roughly correct after I verified it with a measuring tape.

Virtual furniture appeared more or less in proportion with its surroundings.

Ikea Kreativ has the potential to be a helpful little tool. Although only being able to view virtual furniture on a 2D photo seems restrictive, it seemed to give a far more accurate impression of how it might actually look in the space. In contrast, Ikea’s older Place app showed virtual furniture at an inconsistent scale in augmented reality, making it hard to imagine how it might fit into its surroundings.

Ikea Kreativ is live now in the US, and a launch in other countries is planned for next year. It can be accessed via Ikea’s existing iOS app (required for room scanning) or via its website.

Come for the meatballs and Billy bookcase. Stay for a virtual tour that’ll “spark joy” for your cozy-but-drab living space.

Ikea—the Swedish furniture retailer known for its culinary offerings, iconic blue bag and cult-like appeal for urban dwellers looking to upgrade their overpriced abodes affordably and eco-consciously—recently launched Space Unfolded, an in-store pop-up located on the mezzanine level of its Brooklyn, N.Y. location.

Making good on a plan shared during Adweek’s Brandweek 2021 to ramp up its technology to improve the customer experience , the retailer enlisted agency partners Ogilvy and Wavemaker to create the activation. It uses sounds, flashing lights and projections akin to the Van Gogh exhibitions currently running in multiple cities to highlight their latest offerings and inspire spatially challenged shoppers and homeowners alike.

The installation—which cautions individuals with medical conditions that they may be triggered by the lights and effects before entering—took the team four months to create and about month to build, according to a spokesperson.

Once inside, customers use a touchscreen console to select one of three rooms, each representing a different lifestyle, which is then projected into the space and shown simultaneously on the screen, where prompts provide tips, design ideas and product suggestions that drive home the company’s focus on storage and organization for any customer and living space.

“We wanted to give the customer a digital experience they won’t get in the showroom,” an Ikea representative told Adweek during a recent visit. “This is the first time [we’re] using our digital capabilities. We’re always looking to keep innovating. We’re always looking to evolve in that space and show our capabilities there. It’s a great way to introduce our customers to that, too.”

Space Unfolded opened to the public on Feb. 27 and will run through the end of March. Members of the retailer’s loyalty program were given exclusive access to preview the activation on Feb. 26 and invited to book their appointments online a few days prior to the opening.

“We were fully booked,” said the spokesperson, who also noted customers were waiting outside for the store to open upon arriving on a recent Tuesday morning, signaling the welcome return of shoppers to stores in general. “It’s been really great to see!”

This also marks the location’s first foray into in-store activations, taking full advantage of the mezzanine, which is typically allotted for product launches and vignettes.

“This is the perfect space [for this] because it’s located just as customers enter the store and they get to see what’s available and then take that experience with them into the showroom,” the spokesperson added.

Forsman & Bodenfors' campaign features a tongue-in-cheek film attempting to entice visitors by boasting of the places behind Ikea’s range.

Take a Virtual Tour of IKEA's New Sustainable Tiny Home

IKEA has designed and built a sustainable tiny home, and the space is available for free virtual tours online.

Sophie Hirsh - Author

Oct. 2 2020, Updated 2:38 p.m. ET

There are so many benefits to moving into a tiny home (as long as you can handle living in close quarters, of course) — and IKEA wants to give tiny house hopefuls an inside look at the lifestyle. So, IKEA has designed and built a sustainable tiny home , and the space is available for free virtual tours online.

Along with brand studio Vox Creative, IKEA created the “stylish, sustainable, and affordable” 187-square-foot tiny home , after being inspired by their “shared commitments to sustainability, inclusivity and innovation.” The goal of the project is to prove “that anyone, anywhere can live a more sustainable life,” according to IKEA.

“We built a sustainable tiny home from the ground up to better educate and inspire consumers to bring sustainability into their own lives,” IKEA added. The brand also helps this project will “[generate] awareness of the tiny home and [illustrate] the big impact that small, daily decisions can make for a better, more sustainable world ."

You can take a free virtual tour of IKEA's tiny home online.

The tiny, mobile house was actually built back in March, and IKEA planned to take the tiny home on a tour across the U.S., stopping at various sustainable events around the country, letting people explore the small space. But once the coronavirus pandemic struck, IKEA obviously had to change plans.

So, IKEA and Vox Creative worked with Curbed to launch an in-depth virtual tour of the tiny home . The virtual tour is scattered with details about the space-saving furniture, electricity, appliances, and more, as well as tips on how people can make their own homes (whether tiny, large, or anywhere in between) more environmentally-friendly — because whether or not you’re ready to move into a tiny home, there’s so much to learn from the tiny home lifestyle.

IKEA's tiny home was photographed for the virtual tour on a sunny open field, flanked by a cozy outdoor seating area and solar panels. Once you virtually enter the Scandinavian design-inspired home, you’ll see eco-minded details like a water-saving sink, a gas-free portable cooktop, a wooden countertop made from “the whole tree,” and kitchen cabinets made from recycled plastic bottles.

Are tiny homes sustainable?

Of course, whether or not a tiny home is sustainable depends on the actual details of the home in question — but generally, tiny homes do have a lower environmental impact than larger homes. Tiny homes use up less land, require less electricity, generate fewer emissions, and require less building materials. They also force residents to downsize, often encouraging a minimalist lifestyle where owners only buy things they truly need.

According to Virginia Tech PhD Candidate Maria Saxton, who studied the environmental impact of living in tiny homes, people’s energy consumption typically goes down by about 45 percent when they move into a tiny home, as Curbed reported.

Saxton also found that tiny home owners were more likely to grow their own crops, buy less, recycle more, and produce less garbage — all things that can lower one’s environmental impact.

In addition, tiny homes often result in significant cost savings, as well as reduced time cleaning and maintaining the home and property.

IKEA – Virtual Reality Shopping Experience

virtual tour ikea

IKEA, known by most if not all, had decided to boost their marketing activities in the Middle East with “IKEA Virtual Reality Store” experience at Popup shops. The overall concept of these PopUps is to create a more interactive space within the busy shopping malls, bringing IKEA closer to the customer.

IKEA’s products, being so large in quantity and variety cannot be available everywhere. This is where Virtual Reality comes in. Thanks to the PopUp concept everyone had the chance to visit IKEA and see what’s available. What’s great and unheard of, is that the Virtual Reality shopping experience is a much more personalized retail experience that will change how you design your home.

Let me give you a short explanation of how it works. First, the user approaches a touchscreen where they enter their name, phone number and email, after choosing (in this case) one of the 3 pre-set living room layouts (L shaped, Square and Rectangular) that most likely match your own living space, you will be asked to wear the HTC Vive headset to start your furnishing.

Once the headset is on, you will be transported into the virtual living space chosen and will be able to choose, place, and change the design of your living room with over 1000 IKEA products from sofas to mirrors. After achieving your ideal design, you simply exit and have the list of items that you had placed with their unique code and price list for you to email or purchase on-site!

You can do everything under 20 min and if required, request to feel and see the selected samples. What’s even better is that the VR scale is 1:1, which means that all items in the virtual world are replicas in size to real life so there are no surprises after buying the item and bringing it home.

Sounds amazing right?! This is the FIRST ever Virtual Reality experience to generate revenue in a retail concept.

It doesn’t stop there, Takeleap®, introduced another VR activation to give users a full 360 virtual tour of the IKEA Kuwait store, aiding in the process of finding items around the store.

These activations, for now, may only be for the POPUP stores, but in the future, we might see these in the actual stores and that’s when we truly measure how the retail industry is transforming with the help of Virtual Reality.
