The Tuareg people (also spelled Touareg or Tuareg- Imuhagh) are a nation of nomadic pastoralists who are the primary inhabitants of the Saharan interior of North Africa. They refer to themselves in various ways, including Kel Tamasheq or Kel Tamajaq (which means "Speakers of Tamasheq"), Imuhagh or Tamahak Imashaghen (which means "free people"), and Kel Tagelmust, which translates to "People of the veil." The Tuareg language is Tamajaq/Tamasheq/Tamahak, and their writing system is Tifinagh.

Tuareg art takes many forms, including jewelry, leatherwork, and metal saddle decorations known as Trik, as well as finely crafted swords. The Inadan community is known for their traditional handicrafts, including the famous "Cross of Agadez." Tuareg jewelry includes the Takoba, a type of sword- shaped necklace made from gold or silver, and the Takaza, a necklace with intricate gold and silver patterns. Earrings are also an important part of Tuareg jewelry, with the Tizabaten being a popular style.

Our private Algeria desert tours usually last between one and two weeks, but we can organize other trips according to your wishes.  A journey through the Algerian desert can not be done with all the usual amenities, but we strive to make it as comfortable as possible. We have stops to follow to complete the circuit, but everything is done so that you have ample time for your discovery.

Many stops we made for taking photos and to admire the sites we cross. The driver guide and cook take care of all the logistics for your stay. At each stop, they kindle the fire, install the camp, cook dinner, look for the wood and take care of vehicle maintenance.

A 10-day trip, which begins in the bustling capital of Algiers, and then heads deep into the country’s Saharan interior, taking in ancient oasis towns along the way and a bounty of fascinating Roman sites. We visit the dramatic ravine town of Constantine, along with the Roman sites at Djemila, before heading into the heart of the Tassili N’Ajjer National Park, with its otherworldly landscapes, vast dunes and nomadic communities. We’ll learn about life in this remote and harsh landscape, spending time in the oasis town of Djanet, then finish with more time exploring Algiers.

Arrive in Algiers. Transfer to Hotel. Overnight in Algiers at hotel.

A full day tour from 0900 – 1700 in Algiers including the labyrinthine Kasbah and a chance to see some of the colonial buildings of Algiers. A great intro into the country.

Overnight in Algiers at hotel. 

We leave Algiers for a four-hour drive to the spectacular roman ruins of Djemila, a city well adapted to its mountainous setting. This is one of the greatest sets of roman remains in North Africa.

We then travel on to Constantine.

Overnight in Constantine at hotel. 

A day tour of Constantine, a city set on a high plateau split by a dramatic ravine serviced by 7 bridges. The city offers myriad of spectacular views as well as its own history.

Then return to Algiers.

Day trip to visit the Roman ruins of Tipaza and Cherchell.

In the evening fly to the oasis town of Djanet and get some rest before departing on the adventure to the Tassili N’Ajjer desert region.

Overnight in Djanet at hotel.

After breakfast, set out to Tikoubaouine, a stone forest set out in sand with the incredible natural arch the highlight. We will take lunch and and then set out again to El Oued (the valley).

Dinner and camp in the desert.

Today we visit the Guelta of Essendilene. There are a few serene desert ponds in the region , known as gueltas , which you can explore and were once used by nomads as watering holes. After you will visit some of the famous rock paintings of the region.

We will take lunch in the desert near the rock with one of the most famous Algerian ancient rock engraving – “la vache qui pleure” (the crying cow), this 7000-year-old carving is the most famous of the all rock engravings. In the afternoon return to Djanet for a final Tuareg tea ceremony.

We do not and cannot offer a uniform accommodation standard on our itineraries. We consider comfort, location, design, character, historical interest and whether the money we spend will go into the pockets of the local community when we make our choices of where to stay.

You will be accompanied by an international guide, in addition to drivers and a local guide. The local guides and drivers speak limited English.

Security escorts are required in some areas of southern Algeria. We must state that the local team have the final word with regards to changes in the itinerary for safety reasons.

Day 4 – Idaren Gorge

Although it’s not too far from the desert sandstorms that can whip up in a matter of minutes, it was definitely worth travelling here. Every nook and cranny of this dusty town had something interesting to offer – including some stunning views out into the dunes. Make sure you take your time exploring each location; there’s no rush to see everything in one day! And remember: always bring sunscreen, water bottle, and sturdy shoes if you’re planning on venturing outside!

Day 11 – In Tehaq – The Black Dunes

Nous avons jugé bon de ne pas « réchauffer » de vieux programmes de voyage. La réalité locale n’est plus celle d’il y a 10 ans. Nous avons ainsi construit un voyage totalement nouveau et adapté à la situation actuelle. Certaines régions restent interdites au tourisme étranger, alors que d’autres sont simplement inaccessibles pour cause de présence militaire.

Nous privilégions un accès via la Tunisie. Le ferry est pris au départ de Marseille où le point de rendez-vous est donné le samedi matin. Retour de Tunis vers Gênes.

EXIGENCES PARTICIPANT Ce voyage-raid est ouvert aux voyageurs disposant de leur propre 4×4. Un intérêt marqué pour les régions désertiques et reculées est indispensable. Une expérience préalable de la conduite sur sable est préférable, mais pas indispensable. Il s’agit avant tout d’un voyage d’exploration. Les dunes les plus techniques seront contournables. Bien sûr, nous vous voulons en bonne santé et apte à vivre un voyage intense.

VÉHICULE 4X4 Un véhicule disposant de vitesses courtes et d’un blocage de différentiel central est demandé. Exigences minimum: – Minimum 160lt de diesel ( un réappro désert sera organisé pour les véhicules ne disposant pas de l’autonomie totale ). Possesseurs de véhicule essence, merci de nous contacter . – 5 roues en AT ou MT minimum ( les pneus d’origine ne conviennent pas ) – Préfiltre / décanteur de carburant type Racor ou Separ ou similaire – Radio VHF de minimum 20 watts avec antenne externe Une check-list complète vous sera adressée lors de votre inscription. Vous pourrez ainsi vous préparer sereinement. Une assurance RC couvrant l’Algérie sera prise à la frontière.

CELLULES Les véhicules équipés d’une cellule compact, légère et basse ( toit relevable ) peuvent participer à ce voyage. Certaines zones devront néanmoins être contournées ( env. 2-3% du tracé ). ORGANISATION Ces voyages ont demandé des efforts conséquents pour leur mise au point. De nouveaux et précieux appuis sont nécessaires à sa réalisation et à l’obtention d’autorisations d’accès que d’autres n’ont pas. L’EQUIPE GEKO Ce voyage est mené par un chef d’expédition et guide GEKO professionnel très expérimenté, grand connaisseur et amoureux des régions traversées, mais aussi expert en pilotage 4×4. Un mécanicien professionnel est également là pour parer aux urgences comme aux petits bobos mécaniques.

ENCADREMENT DE QUALITÉ Un réel souci de la bonne marche du groupe nous anime en permanence. Nous ne traçons pas devant sans nous soucier de ce qui se passe derrière. Nous testons les zones et vous proposons la meilleure trace en fonction de votre niveau et de votre motivation. Une fois franchie une zone délicate, vous nous verrez souvent courir sur une crête munis d’une radio portable pour vous donner les petits conseils qui vous feront progresser et prendre du plaisir ( ce sera du “bien joué” pour les plus experts 😉 ). Si ça ne passe pas ou que la zone devient jardinée, nous revenons sur zone et vous proposons une trace alternative. Vous l’avez compris, si vous en avez besoin, nous serons là pour vous conseiller et vous accompagner lors des franchissements de passages techniques ou délicats. La liaison radio nous permet d’être virtuellement à vos côtés pour vous guider. Mais parfois rien ne vaut un bon vieux guidage de visu. L’avantage de l’évolution en petit groupe, c’est la solidarité permanente, le plaisir de l’entraide, sans que cela ne soit trop lourd au niveau de la progression et du programme.

GEKO, c’est ça: un encadrement expert, “aux petits oignons”, en petit groupe, dans une ambiance de copains, dans le but de progresser et d’explorer des endroits magiques, authentiques et hors des sentiers battus.

ASSISTANCE MÉCANIQUE – URGENCES Le concept de ce raid ne comprend pas l’emport d’un atelier sur roues (type camion d’assistance). Ce serait incompatible avec le tracé retenu et contraire à notre esprit du voyage (petit groupe, légèreté, mobilité, discrétion et respect des lieux et des locaux). Nous pouvons néanmoins procéder à la plupart des interventions d’urgence. L’emport de pièces de rechange est en revanche de la responsabilité de chaque participant. Il est particulièrement important d’engager un véhicule en parfait état, révisé et à la préparation validée préalablement. Nous pourrons en parler et nous vous aidons volontiers à dresser la liste des éléments à emporter (voir check-list fournie à l’inscription). Les risques d’accident, de maladie, ou de casse mécanique ne peuvent jamais être totalement écartés, mais mieux vaut les réduire au strict minimum par une préparation adaptée et les précautions d’usage. Si un événement grave devait survenir, nous sommes en contact avec des organismes d’assistance sanitaire et technique basés tant en Algérie qu’en Europe. Un/des téléphone(s) satellite, une balise de détresse et du matériel médical d’urgence font partie de notre lot de bord pour tous les voyages que nous encadrons. Une assurance rapatriement est bien sûr obligatoire pour participer à ce voyage.

VISA Il n’est plus nécessaire de vous prendre la tête avec des démarches de demande de visa longues et compliquées. Finis les appels sans réponse et les aller-retour infructueux au consulat. Nous nous chargeons de votre demande de visa. Il vous sera délivré à la frontière.

ET LA SÉCURITÉ ?

C’est la première question posée dès qu’on parle de l’Algérie: «  Et la sécurité ? ». Et c’est bien légitime.

A l’automne 2019-hiver 2020, le sud algérien confirmait son retour sur la scène touristique, avec une fréquentation en nette hausse, et des acteurs du tourisme qui se remettent doucement à espérer. Depuis fin 2022, les vols directs de Paris et Marseille pour Djanet et Tamanrasset ont repris et les gros tours-operators sont de retour dans ces régions fabuleuses. Le tourisme international est de retour ( Nous adaptons nos tracés en conséquence ). Depuis la reprise de nos voyages en Algérie en 2018,  à aucun moment un quelconque sentiment d’insécurité n’est venu nous effleurer . La belle liberté de circuler dont nous bénéficions dans le grand sud ( sans escorte d’aucune sorte dans le cas des voyages GEKO ) fait la nique aux idées préconçues qui circulent encore largement. Mais il est néanmoins bon d’aller au delà du simple “ressenti” et de considérer la réalité, tout en décodant les recommandations et cartes “rouges” de certains gouvernements.

CARTE ROUGE ET SÉCURITÉ RÉELLE

La Diplomatie française fait beaucoup parler d’elle avec ses recommandations ou dissuasions de voyage, notamment avec la publication des fameuses cartes largement teintées de rouge ou de orange. Il est bon néanmoins de faire la part des choses: le dernier enlèvement répertorié dans le sud-est algérien (une touriste italienne) remonte à février 2011 (!). Depuis, l’armée algérienne a mis en place des moyens colossaux pour sécuriser ses frontières. Il est bon également de rappeler que la carte du Ministère des affaires étrangères français n’a pas été modifiée depuis le 22 février 2019, date à laquelle elle évoluait favorablement par rapport à la version précédente ( le centre passait du rouge à l’orange ). Il est également bon de rappeler  la position du ministère des affaires étrangères français à propos des voyages sahariens: “Les randonnées dans le désert saharien sont possibles après accord des autorités locales et en restant sur les parcours surveillés par l’armée. L’emploi d’un guide reconnu localement et disposant de moyens de communication dans les zones les plus isolées, ainsi qu’une bonne préparation physique sont fortement recommandés.” ( publié le 22 février 2019, toujours publié en septembre 2023 ). L’ensemble de ces points sont respectés dans le cadre des voyages en Algérie avec GEKO Expeditions.

TOPO SUR LA SÉCURITÉ DES TOURISTES EN ALGÉRIE 

Les années de terrorisme et d’instabilité aux frontières font place à un beau potentiel pour les années à venir, même si les autorités ne s’intéressent toujours que très peu au développement touristique du pays. La sécurité du sud concerne avant tout les populations locales, mais aussi les intérêts économiques du pays. Il faut impérativement être sur place pour se rendre compte de l’état sécuritaire du pays. Décryptage. Suite à un gros travail préparatoire, une multitude de contacts de tous niveaux et dans tous les secteurs et suite à nos divers voyages soit de reconnaissance soit avec groupe entrepris dès 2017, voilà notre vision de l’état sécuritaire en Algérie.

SÉCURITÉ AUX FRONTIÈRES SUD-EST

L’armée algérienne a déployé des moyens considérables pour sécuriser ses frontières sud et est. Elle y a notamment installé de grosses casernes ainsi que des postes de contrôles par milliers. Les USA ont fourni tout ou partie des moyens permettant à l’armée algérienne de surveiller ses frontières à l’aide de drones 24h sur 24 par tous les temps. De plus, la CIA a implanté une base d’écoute dans la région du Tassili. La frontière sud-est peut être considérée comme parfaitement maîtrisée. Ce n’est pas un hasard si nos voyages dans le sud-est sont libres de toute escorte militaire. Selon plusieurs témoignages, les « trafics » évitent maintenant l’Algérie pour se concentrer sur l’axe Niger-Sud Libye. Les zones frontalières avec la Libye et le Niger restent interdites pour cause de surveillance militaire ( bande de quelques kilomètres ). Nous n’y accédons pas. Lors de nos derniers voyages, nous sommes allés légalement au plus proche à 10km de la Libye. Nous y avons trouvé des ergs vierges de toute trace, même vieille. A noter que la présence militaire est très discrète. Ne circulant pas dans les zones où l’armée est présente, c’est à peine si nous notons leur présence. Un dernier signe encourageant, c’est la totale sérénité des locaux et des autorités dans le Grand Sud. Les gendarmes y sont décontractés et plaisantent volontiers. Nos voyages ne se font que dans des zones pour lesquelles nous obtenons des autorisations de circuler. Ces autorisations peuvent varier d’une période à l’autre en fonction de la présence et des exercices militaires et de l’actualité. S’ils y sont, en général la zone est interdite. Nous nous conformons aux décisions des autorités. Notre programme est visé et approuvé en haut lieu. Il est important de comprendre le travail effectué en avant le départ et de bien comprendre que l’on ne va pas où l’on veut. Des contrôles militaires ( postes fixes ou patrouilles volantes ) sont possibles et il faut pouvoir présenter les bons papiers et être au bon endroit, sous peine d’expulsion immédiate. A noter que les régions de Tamanrasset et de l’Assekrem ( plus à l’ouest ) sont depuis peu ouvertes aux touristes étrangers, mais ne peuvent toujours pas être rejointes par la piste depuis Djanet. Les zones autorisées autour de Tam sont très restreintes et ne justifient pas un détour si long par la route. Les alentours de Tam restent néanmoins soumis à une progression sous escorte rapprochée.

SÉCURITÉ INTÉRIEURE

L’Algérie serait-il un pays plus sûr que la France ? A en juger par le nombre d’attentats commis ces dernières années, la question est ouverte. Le véritable enjeu, c’est l’exploitation pétrolière et gazière et les fortunes qu’elles rapportent à l’Algérie et à ses alliés occidentaux, dont en première ligne la France. Un quelconque attentat ou une agression envers les intérêts des pétroliers porteraient un préjudice irréparable au gouvernement en place, risquant même une grave déstabilisation du pays. Les enjeux sont colossaux. Et les alliés, France en tête, ne veulent en aucun cas accentuer le risque de perdre la « poule aux oeufs d’or »… d’où ce rouge persistant associé à certaines zones d’Algérie sur le site de la diplomatie française. Le touriste n’est qu’une malheureuse poussière dont on n’a que faire… d’autant plus s’il concerne le sud, toujours dénigré par les autorités du nord. C’est bien dans les régions pétrolières que l’on sent le poids du dispositif sécuritaire en Algérie. La ville de Hassi-Messaoud par exemple, est une véritable oasis-forteresse entourée de nombreux barrages de contrôle. Afin d’éviter tout dérapage, les étrangers de passage ou vivant en Algérie doivent impérativement être escortés par la Gendarmerie pour leurs déplacements. Les principaux concernés sont les expatriés travaillant pour le pétrole. Les touristes n’échappent pas à la règle. Nos groupes sont ainsi escortés du poste frontière de Taleb Larbi à la région de In Amenas ou Illizi ( ça a tendance à s’alléger ). Plus au sud, là où le pétrole s’efface, nous sommes libres de nous déplacer sans escorte de gendarmerie. Le vrai voyage peut alors commencer.

The Trans-Sahara Highway is the main route from Algiers to Tamanrasset . The road is paved and in good condition, however, you need a durable, sturdy vehicle as the climatic conditions of the desert are harsh.

Get around [ edit ]

Due to the immense size of the area, the harshness of the Saharan desert, the lack of adequately developed infrastructure, and the uncertain security situation, the safest way to get around the area quickly is by plane.

The airport in Tamanrasset offers flights to many cities in the region, including cities like In Guezzam .

Unless you have experience driving in harsh conditions, it's not wise to get around the region by car. Due to its remote location, there is little to no access to medical facilities and the risk of becoming stranded is high. It is also important to note that in the Sahara Desert temperatures can reach extreme highs during the day, making it dangerous to travel in the area.

Perhaps the biggest danger is the extreme heat , which should come as no surprise because the entire region is covered in deserts. Be sure to hydrate often, wear appropriate clothing to deal with the heat, and do not be out for long.

Governments advise against travelling to areas near the borders with Libya , Niger , Mali , and Mauritania due to terrorism and banditry concerns. Generally speaking, tourists have little reason to go to those areas as they have very few attractions that interest tourists. If you absolutely must go to the border areas, be aware of your surroundings at all times. The exception to this is the Tadrart Rouge section of the Tassili n'Ajjer National Park, roughly 130 km southeast of Djanet. This is a major tourist attraction near the Libya-Niger-Algeria tripoint, and that area of desert is guarded by the military and safe for guided travel.

If you plan on staying in the continent for long, you may wish to visit some of Algeria's closest neighbours. Some of them share a culture similar to that of Algeria. As the security situation is rather uncertain, it's often not recommended to travel overland. The best thing to do is to return to Algiers and hop on a flight that will take you to Algeria's closest neighbours since none of the airports in the area offer international flights. However, should the adventurous traveller wish to travel overland, they should consider travelling with an armed escort or someone experienced.

COMMENT VENIR ?

Il n’y a pas de vols directs pour Djanet. Vous devrez transiter par Alger. La compagnie Air Algérie propose des vols directs pour Alger au départ de Paris, mais aussi de quelques villes de province (Marseille, Toulouse, Lyon…). Pour vous rendre à Djanet, la compagnie Air Algérie proposent 4 vols par semaine au départ d’Alger, généralement tard le soir. Communiquez-nous vos dates et heures d’arrivée à Djanet et notre équipe vous transfèrera gratuitement à notre hôtel. CONSEIL : Au départ de France, enregistrez toujours vos bagages pour Alger. Récupérer-les au terminal des vols internationaux puis rendez-vous au terminal des vols domestiques (20mn à pied) et enregistrez-les pour le vol intérieur. Si vous les enregistrez directement pour Djanet au départ de France (ou d’autres villes d’Europe), il y a peu de chance que vous les récupériez à votre arrivée !…

C’est surtout un climat marqué par des grandes différences de températures, chaud le jour et froid la nuit ! Mais soyez rassurés, les températures restent très supportables, d’autant que l’air y est très sec. Nous avons choisi d’effectuer nos parcours pendant la saison d’hiver, d’octobre à avril, afin de vous faire bénéficier de la plus belle lumière du désert, sans les brumes de chaleur qui voilent le paysage. Dans la Tadrart en octobre, il peut faire encore très chaud (30 à 35°C). De novembre à février, les températures peuvent atteindre 20°C dans la journée mais peuvent descendre entre 5 et 10°C la nuit, parfois moins… Les mois les plus chauds sont avril et mai (45°C et plus…). Tout déplacement dans le désert est fortement déconseillé à cette période.

Aucun vaccin exigé et nécessaire – Pas de moustique dans le désert, pas d’animaux dangereux.

PHARMACIE (suggestion)

• L’eau minérale en bouteille vous sera fournie tout au long de votre parcours, inutile d’emporter des pilules d’hydroclonazone, • Protection solaire, • Crème hydratante, • Baume pour les lèvres, • Aspirine ou paracétamol, • Anti-diarrhéique, • Collyre pour les yeux, • Votre pharmacie personnelle.

I NDISPENSABLE
 • Bon duvet (avec résistance prévue pour une température inférieure à 0/-5°C, selon la saison),
 • Petite tente, si vous ne voulez pas dormir à la belle étoile,
 • Un petit sac à dos pour ranger vos effets personnels durant nos déplacements, • Vêtement chauds pour les soirées et le petit matin (doudoune, pull, polaire, coupe-vent),
 • Vêtements légers pour la journée,
 • Une paire de chaussures de marche (déjà rodées !), mais une bonne paire de basket peut s’avérer suffisante,
 • Chapeau, casquette ou chèche,
 • Lunettes de soleil,
 • Serviette et lingettes pour votre toilette (l’eau est précieuse),
 • Papier hygiénique et briquet (pour brûler le papier après utilisation),
 • Lampe frontale ou autre.

• Les paires de jumelles sont interdites en Algérie.

La monnaie nationale est le Dinar algérien (DZD). Taux de change (Juillet 2022) : 100 DZD = 0,65 EUR / 1 EUR = 153 DZD.
 Sur place, vous n’aurez quasiment pas besoin d’argent (sauf pour les pourboires à notre équipe et les quelques souvenirs que vous pourrez trouver à Djanet). Vous pourrez changer votre argent à l’aéroport d’Alger ou dans les banques de Djanet (ouvertes le samedi). L’EURO est accepté partout mais on vous rendra la monnaie dans la devise locale. Une déclaration aux douanes est obligatoire si vous importez plus de 1.000€.

CONSEILS AUX PHOTOGRAPHES

Au Sahara, l’intensité lumineuse est importante et la réverbération du sable très forte. Les amoureux de la photographie argentique privilègeront les pellicules de basse sensibilité (50 à 100 asa). Pour les autres, prévoyez un stock important de cartes-mémoire car vous serez surpris par la diversité des paysages. Les lumières du soir et du matin sont un vrai enchantement et les photos à faire ne manquent pas… Un tripod peut s’avérer très utile, voire indispensable, pour immortaliser la magie des aurores, des crépuscules et aussi du ciel étoilé et de la voie lactée particulièrement bien visible en l’absence de lumières parasites. Le matériel peut souffrir. Prévoyez des filtres neutres ou UV pour protéger vos objectifs. Le sable n’est pas un problème, c’est le vent qui peut s’avérer dangereux pour votre matériel. Penser donc à emporter des sacs plastiques pour le protéger. Si vous le pouvez, prenez un boitier de secours pour ne pas être frustré en cas de panne !
 N’oubliez pas de prendre avec vous votre chargeur d’accus (ou piles de rechange). Recharger vos batterie à fond avant de partir. Si vous le pouvez, emportez avec vous un convertisseur de courant (qui se branche sur l’allume-cigare des 4×4) et qui vous fournira du 220 V au cours de vos déplacements. Pas d’autres prises de courant au cours de votre séjour, sauf à l’hôtel Zériba, le jour de votre arrivée.
 Avant de prendre la photo d’une personne, il est d’usage de demander sa permission.
 Les peintures rupestres se photographient sans flash.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

• Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
• Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
• How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
• What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
• What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
• What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.

Rosatom obtained a license for the first land-based SMR in Russia

On April 21, Rosenergoatom obtained a license issued by Rostekhnadzor to construct the Yakutsk land-based SMR in the Ust-Yansky District of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
