west bengal tourism bakkhali hotel

Bakkhali is a seaside resort in the 24 Parganas region of West Bengal , India.

Understand [ edit ]

Bakkhali is on one of the many deltaic islands spread across Southeast Bengal and has a popular sea beach. Most of the islands are part of the Sundarbans, barring a few at the fringes. Some of these are joined together with bridges over narrow creeks. This small island juts out into the vast expanse of the Bay of Bengal.

There is an 8 km (5.0 mi)-long beach stretching from Bakkhali to Fraserganj with gently rolling waves. These are twin towns now forming one continuous locality. Except on an occasional holiday, the beach is not crowded. A small stretch near Bakkhali has been lit up. It is a hard beach suitable for cycling or even driving. One can take long walks with coconut water.

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ].

The nearest airport is at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport ( CCU  IATA ) in Kolkata. Bakkhali is around 147 km or a 4½-hour car ride from the airport.

By train [ edit ]

From Namkhana station, you will get a rickshaw to reach the bus stand from where one can get buses for Bakkhali which take around 35 min. and the fare is ₹16.50. You can also hire private cars from the Namkhana bus stand/railway station, the fare will be ₹350 to ₹500 depending on your bargaining skills. The Bakkhali bus stand is very close to most of the hotels and a 5- to 7-min walk from the beach.

By bus [ edit ]

West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) has regular bus service from Esplanade to Bakkhali. One starts at 7AM in the morning from Esplanade and reaches Bakkhali at around 11:30AM and leaves from Bakkhali after half an hour for Kolkata (Esplanade). Another starts at 8AM from Esplanade to reach bakkhali at 12:30PM and starts from Bakkhali after half an hour forty five minutes. So the bottom-line is that there are two round trips from Kolkata to Bakkhali provided by WBTC. This schedule is subject to change and one must confirm it from Esplanade Bus Terminus before venturing out from Kolkata. The route of the bus is Esplanade- Alipore-Chiriakhana-Taratala-Diamond Harbour-Kakdwip-Namkahana-Bakkhali, the fare is ₹70.

At Namkhana, the bus has to be transported across the Hatania-Doania creek in a special ferry. It is expected that the Namkhana Bridge will be open to big vehicles, once the complete work is done. The ferry service is available from 7AM-11PM except from noon till 1:45PM (lunch hour). There are plenty of local buses up to Namkhana and then again from Namkhana to Bakkhali.

By car [ edit ]

Bakkhali is 122 km by road from central Kolkata . The road runs through Diamond Harbour and Kakdwip to Namkhana. A bridge over Hatania-Doania river at Namkhana is open to small vehicles (cars), making it possible to travel directly to Bakkhali without having to wait for ferry. The 130-km stretch from Kona expressway (with links to the Mumbai and Delhi sections of the golden quadrangle project linking the four metropolises of India) and Bakkhali has been marked as National Highway (NH) 117.

The road journey from the fringe of Kolkata to Bakkhali takes about 3 hours. However, crowded market places and occasional stretches of bad road can delay movement. Some sections are very crowded, especially in the early morning because of the bazaar, and later at the evening time, there is no bypass for these smaller towns.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

There are many electric rickshaws, locally known as Totos and indigenous mechanised cycle vans, available in Bakkhali which serves the purpose of sightseeing perfectly. In case, you prefer a hired car, it is suggested that you contact and inform your hotel in advance, as availability might be less in peak season. Most Bakkhali hotels have chargeable dormitories for drivers to stay.

The ride in the crude bhut-bhuti, a motorised country boat, from Fraserganj fishing harbour to Jambudwip , a small, uninhabited and forested island out in the sea, can be a thrilling experience. The two-hour ride (both ways) costs ₹250-300 per head. The country boats can also be hired for other rides. The weak-hearted are advised not to take the rides.

For all the spots a rickshaw van will charge you at max ₹60 per head and it will take around 5 hr to visit all the spots and stay for 1 to 2 hr in Jambudwip.

  • 21.5626 88.2697 2 Bakkhali Crocodile Project .
  • 21.5592 88.2657 3 Bakkhali sea beach . It is a 8-km long sea beach, stretching from Bakhkhali to Fraserganj. The point shown on the map is towards the Bakkhali end. This part is lighted at night. There's a car park at the entry to the beach, and a fee if you want to take your car on to the beach - it's a hard surface.
  • 21.5797 88.2511 4 Fraserganj Fishing Harbour ( Jetty ). bhut-bhutis (motorised country boats) are available for visiting Jambudwip and other places. Travelling in the open sea in a primitive craft may get unconfortable if the sea suddenly turns rough, but hundreds of tourists go.
  • 21.5764 88.2924 5 Henry Island . No more a separate island, it's slightly more than 5 km (15 minutes by car) from Bakkhali.
  • 21.5714 88.1817 6 Jambudwip . Uninhabited forested island with a beautiful beach. There is no jetty. One has to get down on the watery beach.

See [ edit ]

The walk over the beach from Bakkhali to Fraserganj is a pleasant experience. The electric rickshaws, locally known as Totos and indigenous mechanised cycle vans, are the popular transport available locally.

  • Bakkhali Beach: Enjoy the sea at the beach. However, the water is little muddy and the sea drifts away by a few kms during low tide.
  • Henry Island ( a 10-min ride from Bakkhali ), ☏ +91 33 2337 6470 . You can take a trip to Henry's Island and Watch Tower. A rickshaw trip will travel through the local villages and their surrounds. From the watch tower you can view the entire Sunderban area. It is a splendid view. On one side you can see the Bakkhali Beach in the far distance and on all the other side the green expanses of Sundarban. Have a look at the view from the watch tower and do walk to the beach. The walk goes through a stretch of mangrove jungle accessed by crossing a small bamboo bridge. The credit for turning Henry Island into a holiday hotspot goes to the fisheries department of the state government which has set up a pisciculture project here. The fisheries department has dug more than 50 ponds occupying over 25 bigha on 100-hectare of land. Trees such as gora, kankru, palm, naturally growing sundari and hetal have been planted. Henry Island is named after a European who surveyed land in the area in the late 19th century. Dense mangrove forest is parted by numerous canals covering the area. Wildlife such as tiger, deer, wild pig, crocodile and snakes were common. The island was only an extension of the Sundarbans and the surveyor could not have dreamt that it would become a human habitat in little more than a hundred years. There are 3 guest houses on Henry Island. If you wish you can stay there too. The lodges are named Mangrove , Sundari and Bani . Bani has a watchtower on the roof is very close to the sea beach. You can enjoy a good view of the surrounds from there. These lodges belong to the Fisheries Department of West Bengal. ₹10 entry fee .
  • Fraserganj Beach: See the house of Andrew Fraser, a lieutenant-governor of Bengal, the beach and the windmills on/on the way to the beach
  • Benfish Harbour: Visit the Benfish harbour and Fraserganj Beach on the way to Henry's Island.
  • Jammu Deep: You can pay a visit to a small island, Jammu Deep, amidst the sea where you have to travel via boat in high waves from the Benfish Harbour, the boat ride is just thrilling.on arrival you will be delighted to see the beach full with Red Crabs its really a nice view.
  • Crocodile Park: You can also visit the Crocodile Park and Mangrove forest just beside the Bakkhali Bus Stop. The entry fee is ₹10.
  • Bishhalakshmi Temple: A temple called Bishhalakshmi is at the end of the Bakkhali main beach and is worth seeing. The pandit ji is quite different there as he won't allow you in the temple. He has his own rules.

Do [ edit ]

  • Most of the time would be spent in enjoying on the beach but some people look out for opportunities to do other things also.
  • Get a massage at Bakhhali Beach (full body ₹45, head and shoulder ₹10).
  • Take a boat ride to Jammu Deep

Buy [ edit ]

Credit cards are not accepted anywhere. There are a couple of ATMs, including one at Axis Bank at Bakkhali Bus Stand, but it is recommended to carry cash as the ATM tends to dry up quickly.

Eat [ edit ]

  • Frazargunj Indian Hotel beside Hotel Deepak. You will get many varieties with wonderful taste and reasonable price. If you buy sea fish and crab from outside and ask them to prepare it for you, they will do that happily for a small fee. These young men are very cooperative.
  • New Hotel Parijat in between the local bus-stand and WBTDC Lodge provides the best food here at moderate prices. You will find all sorts of fishes like pomfret, hilsa, prawn and the standard rui and katla too. A normal rui thali with other recipes costs ₹35. Chicken meal ₹80, prawns ₹100. No breakfast available here. Extremely courteous staff.
  • You can also try the various road side shacks for lunch and dinner. They come a little cheaper but the food can be sumptuous and tasty. However, because Bakkhali doesn't have a steady flow of tourists, most restaurants don't have a steady menu for lunch or dinner. You have to place an order for lunch/dinner a few hours in advance.
  • Henry Island can be a paradise for non-vegetarians, but you are left with little or no option for vegetarians, which can become a major problem at times.
  • Most hotels have their own restaurants and some have bars.

Sleep [ edit ]

There are many hotels at both Bakkhali and Fraserganj and new ones are steadily coming up. The bus from Namkhana passes over Fraserganj before reaching Bakkhali. Henry Island is located closer to Fraserganj. None of the hotels have a direct view of the sea (the casuarina forest or jhau bon can be visible at maximum). The WBTDC Tourist Complex is nearest to the sea.

  • Ananya Hotel ( In between Bakkhali and Fraserganj ), ☏ +91 98 3150 7528 . Check-in: noon , check-out: 11:30AM . Three floors, plenty of water, hotel roof access, very good ambience and airy. Connect [ edit ]

Mobile phone coverage at Bakkhali is good, covers full range up to Jambudwip. However, 4G connectivity can be patchy on most networks. It is best to check with the hotel you intend to stay at to determine which of the mobile phone service providers have good Internet connectivity in the town and whether STD/ISD calls can be made from the hotel.

How We Visited All the Bakkhali Tourist Places – Our Holiday Story

We found that there were three holidays together this year. So we quickly made a holiday plan. Bakkhali Beach is best for us because it’s near Kolkata and easily connects by bus/train/private car.

Sealdah to Namkhana train for Bakkhali – First option

We took the train from Sealdah to Namkhana station early in the morning. There are two popular Sealdah to Namkhana local trains. One is at 5:12 am and 7:14 am, connecting from Laxmikantapur (search Sealdah to Laxmikantapur rail timetable). Afterwards, the same train runs between Laxmikantapur to Namkhana. The journey time is 2.5 hours.

After that, we took a local van for Ferighat, and the fair was 7 rupees per person. Riksha and Toto’s are also available. We crossed the river “ Hatania-Doania ” by paying rupees 1+toll tax and 1 rupee per person.

After crossing the river, we took a van to the bus stand and paid seven rupees. There are several options for going to Bakkhali, like Maruti, toto, bus, etc. Bus fare is nominal, just 22 rupees, as it is a local journey.

It takes 1 hour by bus. But we chose Maruti as a private vehicle; it reaches the destination in 20 minutes for 350 rupees. The share option is also available.  The total journey time is 3.5 hours from Sealdah to Bakkhali.

Sealdah to Namkhana train time table

Go with  Bankura Bishnupur Mukutmanipur Tour from Kolkata

Kolkata to Bakkhali ac Volvo bus from Esplanade – Second option

Kolkata (Esplanade) to Bakkhali direct AC bus (ACT15) running on Saturday and Sunday (via Behala- Thankurpukur-Kakdwip-Namkhana) fair is 255 rupees. Departure time is 7:30 am.

Non-AC buses are available from Howrah to Bakkhali for 106 rupees and Esplanade to Bakkhali for 102 rupees. Service started from 6:00 am onward.

Good news, travellers! The government completed the work on the Bakkhali bridge, which is open now (This is my second trip). That means no need to cross the “Hatania-Doania” river.

Currently, Toto and personal vehicles are crossing this bridge, saving risk factors and time. Small cars and Toto directly go to Bakkhali from Namkhana station for 350 rupees to 400 rupees. Buses are now coming from Kolkata also. And water sports are just started.

Reached Bakkhali and enjoy the High tide and bath

On the first day, we visited the beach only. We talk to the local people who know the “High Tide” time for a bath in the evening. Because most of the time is lean hours, and the water is far from the beach.

Lots of local food options are offered there by the local shops on Bakkhali Sea Beach. We ate seafish, and we had dinner at the hotel.

Visit Henry Island sea beach – Next full day of Sightseeing

The following day, we went to the most awaited Henry Island sea beach, under Frazerganj town, fishing harbour with a Toto, which charges 250 rupees. Henri Island is also a good beach with ‘fishing Veri’s; 162 Veri’s are there. It also has a watchtower. The government fish counter also buys local fish; the entry fee is 20 rupees per head. This Bakkhali picnic spot is ideal for families.

Next, we visit Benfish Fishing Harbour. It’s a fishy-smelling area because Lots of fishing boats are there. The entry fee is 10 rupees. You can go to”  Jambudweep Island ” by hiring a boat from there. It takes 1.5 hours, and the cost is 3000 approx. But remember, boats only take a merry-go-round on the islands and return. Next, we saw the Frazerganj  wind turbine  and  Mr Frazer’s house on Frazerganjsea beach . We can see some areas of Mousuni Island from here.

We returned to the hotel and went to the beach to enjoy the bath and then returned to the hotel. We went to the beach again in the evening, shopped, and had some seafood. We returned to the hotel around 9:00 pm.

On the third morning, our trip started with the  Bakkhali crocodile project  near the bus stand. There are a few deer and crocodiles, and “ Bishhalakshmi Temple ” is also there.

We are trying to go to the”  Banbibi temple ” near the beach, which is reachable on a walk. In the evening, I revisited the beach.

We returned to Namkhana with a Toto for 250 rupees the following day. Around 10:30 am, we took the train to Sealdah station.

Tourists may go to  Gangasagar Island  and Mousuni Island from here, and it’s also on the same route.

Bakkhali Travel Guide 2022 | An Exotic Weekend Destination from Kolkata

west bengal tourism bakkhali hotel

Bakkhali travel guide – Irrespective of the reason you are in Bakkhali, this seaside town can be an amazing destination to visit. Bakkhali is the perfect destination for nature lovers who want to spend some time in peace, serene and quiet place.

Bakkhali is situated on one of the galore deltaic islands spread across southern Bengal.

Most of the islands are part of the Sunderbans, excluding a few at the fringes. Some of these are linked with bridges over narrow creeks. This petite island juts out into the immense expanse of the Bay of Bengal.

This small island juts out into the vast expanse of the Bay of Bengal. Our hungry-for-holiday souls set out again in search of a weekend hideout from Kolkata and we chose Henry Island and Frazergunj. During the train journey, the lush green fields on both sides of the road was a real treat for our eyes.

THE HATANIA-DOANIA RIVER

What we experienced in this journey was something amazing and unique. The highlight and excitement of the journey is the crossing of the Hatania – Doania River. Bus and other vehicles are transported by a vessel across the narrow but swift streaming river. But there is no connecting bridge this is the only huge barge that operates between the banks to transport vehicles.

You may drive your car to the barge, sit inside it and the barge shall take you to the opposite bank. Huge size lorries and buses are also transported in the same manner. It is a memorable experience sitting inside the vehicle and floating on the river.

The creek is a narrow one, just about a hundred meters or so, but is substantially deep allowing the movement of ships from Kolkata to ports in Bangladesh. The creek reduces the journey-time for the ships though construction of a bridge across the creek is undergoing now.

Though a costly proposition, the bridge is not an ordinary one. The ferry service is available from 7AM-9.30PM except from 12 noon till 1:45 PM (lunch hour). Once you cross to the other side of the river, you have to have a driving force of another 25km of a smooth ride through the NH117. This stretch is so smooth enough to drive at almost 100kmph.

EXPLORING HENRY ISLAND

Located on the western edge of the Sundarban and about 130 Km from Kolkata, Henry’s Island is fast developing into in West Bengal’s favorite Beach Resort. Crisscrossed by numerous rivers and rivulets Henry’s island offers an interesting mix of beach and mangrove forest.

It is one of those islands which open up into the vast expanse of Bay of Bengal. It takes about 30-40 mins to reach Henry Island by car from the bus stop. The road to Henry island meanders through locals villages and agricultural fields and we reached there after a short drive through the mangrove forest.

SUGGESTED READ : I have a detailed guide on places near Kolkata for a day trip or looking for a nice weekend trip with your loved one.

Titled after a British surveyor, who survived in this region about a century ago, Henrys Island is one of the many islands that form the Ganga – Brahmaputra delta, the largest in the world. A kilometer long narrow Bernard Road connects Henry’s Island to NH117.

The road meanders through agricultural lands and Henry’s Island is reached on crossing a creek, where the marvelous laid garden welcomes you to the Mangrove Resort. The island was just an extension of the Sunderbans which the surveyor could not have dreamt that it would become a human habitat in another hundred years.

THE MANGROVE AND SUNDARI RESORT

During the 1980s the Fisheries Department of Bengal took the initiative of refining Henry’s Island into a tourist spot. Several ponds were dug and a forestation project was taken up and the construction of the two resorts of Mangrove & Sundari took place.

The complex also houses several large ponds used for fish cultivation. Fresh fish and shrimps straight out of the ponds must be tried by all visitors. The credit of fine-tuning Henry Island into a holiday hotspot goes to the fisheries department of the state government which has set up many pisciculture projects here.

The fisheries department has dug more than 50 ponds here. You will see trees such as gora, kankru, palm, naturally growing sundari and hetal throughout this island.

WATCHTOWER AT HENRY ISLAND

Sundari Tourist Complex houses a watch tower, providing a panoramic view of the surrounding which is mind-blowing and lucky few can even spot wildlife like deer and wild pigs.

You can view the vast green expanse of Mangrove forest of the entire Sundarban area from the watchtower with Bakkhali beach in the distance, which is indeed splendid. It seems we were standing atop the mangrove forest in a quiet and peaceful place.

THE PRISTINE KIRAN BEACH

The brick laid road meanders through dense forest from the Sundari Resort, and from there a further 10-minute walk takes you to the Kiran Beach. You may walk up to the beach from the Sundari complex.

The walk goes through a stretch of mangrove forest accessed by crossing a mini bamboo bridge. The Kiran Beach is a mixture of white sand and clay and is lined with casuarinas plantation with occasional mangroves.

The white sand of this pristine beach is just feather soft. Chances are, you will have the beach all to yourself but the beach is a photographer’s delight. The panorama is simply photogenic where you can click a few fantastic snaps.

There is no disturbance and you would be in the lap of nature. The crescent-shaped beach gave us perfect peace and serenity I was craving for so long. The sunset, especially, is spectacular here.

west bengal tourism bakkhali hotel

THE BAKKHALI BEACH

The beach is not at all crowded. Even if you find a few on one part of the beach, you will unquestionably find a lone corner in another part. The sea faces high tides in the morning and low tides in the evening resulting in mind-blowing designs on the sand during low tides.

It is a hard beach suitable for cycling. Driving on the beach is strictly prohibited. Sun was just at the top of our head and the weather was brilliant to dive into the water and have a sunbath.

You will find a number of hawkers selling green coconut water You can just have a quiet and relaxing time on the beach sipping on coconut water. Plenty of seafood is available here to snack on. I have seen many beaches, but this beach is unique for its peaceful nature.

FRAZERGUNJ COAST

Frazergunj is a prime hub for pisciculture in the country and houses a large harbor. Frazergunj, is a mere 3km walk from Bakkhali with gently rolling waves and which is famous for its white sand beach and a lot of giant towering windmills as its landmark welcome you there.

If you don’t have a car, you can take a rickshaw van or a motor van that would take you to Frazerganj fishing harbor through a short bumpy road. It will be a bumpy ride but an unforgettable experience for you.

A short walk along a marshy road, past spinning windmills, will take you to the beach. Walk along the hard coast to the rocky embankment, where you can sit for hours watching the fishing vessels battle the waves.

west bengal tourism bakkhali hotel

THE FISHING HARBOR

Numerous fishing boats, of all variety of shape and size, line up the harbor. It is a place for passionate activities with fishes being loaded and packed with ice. Benfish runs an auction center at the harbor. It is also a place where boats and nets are mended. Also, you can come across a few boats being worshiped by fishermen before taking their maiden voyage.

Most likely you may come across fishermen mending their boats and nets, with their children playing in the beach. The coastal town is just as beautiful. You may also watch the sun rise behind the windmills before heading for the harbor.

HISTORY HOPPING AT FRAZERGANJ

A century ago, Lt-Gov. of Bengal Andrew Frazer fell in love with this beach at one end of the Sunderbans. He was so drawn to this stretch of sand that he built a bungalow at Narayanitala, the nearest village. The bungalow by the sea, surrounded by coconut groves, became a talking point among the Englishmen in Calcutta. Frazer, however, could not fulfill his dream of converting Narayanitala, later Frazerganj was rechristened into a health and beach resort.

The Frazerganj bungalow was engulfed by the advancing waters.

Today, apart from the title, nothing remains of Frazerganj’s colonial past. You can see many dilapidated buildings, local people say this is the old structure of Frazerganj port building which is almost on the verge of collapsing, local people believe them to be the remains of Frazer’s famed bungalow, however, there are no concrete pieces of evidence to justify this story.

There is nothing to be disheartened, for the beach is captivating enough for a perfect weekend and more.

THE UNINHABITED JAMBU DWEEP

Those with the stomach for adventure can take a roller coaster ride in the mighty Bay of Bengal, and explore near the exotic Janby Dweep. Frazerganj harbor is the launch pad for trips to the uninhabited Jambu Dip.

It is a nature’s paradise in the heart of Bay of Bengal, but now entry to this island is restricted. Boating to Jambu Dwip is the most adventurous and thrilling experience that you will find in West Bengal.

The waves striking the front end of the boat from the opposite direction and the boat moving up and down with the waves and the wind will be a fantastic experience. One can charter the motorized country boat at a nominal price of Rs. 1500 and enjoy the adventure.

However, we had to omit to visit this place as we were advised by the hotel authority not to take the risky ride with a kid or aged person. That did not matter more given the wonderful weekend trip we had.

The WBSTC bus starts from Esplanade at 7 am. The bus returns from Bakkhali at 1 pm. The journey takes around 4 to 5 hours and the one-way fare is Rs 64.

The nearest rail station is at Namkhana. There are regular trains from Sealdah via Lakshmikantapur and Kakdwip to Namkhana. Train fare is around Rs 25 and the journey takes around 3 hrs. From Namkhana station you will get a van rickshaw to reach the place from where you need to cross Hatania-Doania river in a small boat.

Van fare is Rs 5 per head or Rs 25 if you reserve a van and for crossing the creek you need to pay Rs 1. Then from the bus stand, one can get buses for Bakkhali which take around 45mins to 1hr and their fare is Rs 16.50 or you may reserve a Maruti van for Rs. 400/-. The Bakkhali bus stand is very close to all the hotels and just a 5 min walk from the beach.

WHERE TO EAT

When it comes to food, Bakkhali is a favorite hunt for the fish-loving Bengali tourist. Pomfret, Bethki, Ilish, Pabda along with prawns and crabs are available at a throwaway price at the roadside eateries.

These food stalls and restaurant cooks the freshly caught fish purchased from the sea beach. Do try out the fish and seafood at the Sagar Kanya, a small eatery on the road connecting Bakkhali Bus – stand to the beach.

RECOMMENDED STAY

There are ample accommodation facilities in Bakkhali. But the best ones are Bay View Tourist Lodge and West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation’s (WBTDC) Bakkhali Lodge. But woefully, none of the hotels in Bakkhali have a good view of the sea because of the abounding growth of casurina trees along the beach. If you stay near the harbor, Sagar kanya, run by Benfish, is a good bet.

Bakkhali has more lodges than Frazerganj, including Bakkhali Tourist Lodge (run by WBTDC), Amarabati Hotel, Balaka Hotel, and Hotel Babylon. Almost all the hotels have their own restaurant. There are 3 guest houses on Henry Island.

SUGGESTED: If you wish you can stay there too. The lodges are named Mangrove, Sundari and Bani. Sundari has a watchtower on the roof is very close to the sea beach. These lodges belong to the State Fisheries Department of West Bengal. For reservations, contact: State Fisheries Development Corporation, Bikash Bhavan ☎+91 33 2337 6470.

SUGGESTIONS

Avoid going in summers because the temperature would burn you. Rainy season would be risky to make the voyage in the sea. Winter is the best time to visit Bakkhali and Henry Island

After a hectic day tour, we took a chair near the beach to dip our legs in the sand with the sand currents kissing our legs and watching some local boys singing rural songs. We could feel the very peaceful existence of beach, air, moonlight.

We looked at the distant sea, and found small fishing boats in the moonlight sea, working for their ends. We felt, yes, we should come back again here for enjoying another beautiful evening at the beach in future trips. Watch the video for few glimpses of the tour.

To know more about our awesome and diverse country, do visit us again. I shall be back very soon with more interesting stuff from the different part of our country. Until then Stay tuned to TravelEscape to keep traveling and keep exploring.

Essential bakkhali.

Bakkhali : The place unknown and roads unmeasured, unveiled beaches and beauty undefined.

Photo of anila

Because there came another weekend with an additional holiday so we packed our bags and decided to go on a weekend trip. Now we had to decide our destination unlike other times we had made our choice.

So this time it was about beaches of West Bengal and we were looking for some unexplored beaches and we found a deltaic Island in the southern part of Sundarbans.

Photo of Bakkhali : The place unknown and roads unmeasured, unveiled beaches and beauty undefined. 1/3 by anila

All done with packing we were ready to leave. One of our friends had to drop her plans because of the office emergency. We had our train at night 9:40 pm from Ranchi and by 7:00 am we were at Howrah station.

Freshened up and booked a cab to Bakkhali from Savaari.com I must mention they are good with services and are helpful. We had to wait till 9:30 for the cab by then we began with the video blogging and had breakfast at Comesome. Soon the cab was there and we got comfortable in there the driver was friendly and helpful. Thumbs up to Savaari.com.

Soon we were out of the main city and were driving along the river Hooghly, the road was calm and there were small houses and vast lush green fields. We crossed Diamond Harbour and Kakdwip and reached Namakhana.

Photo of Bakkhali : The place unknown and roads unmeasured, unveiled beaches and beauty undefined. 2/3 by anila

Here we had to take the boat which will carry our car to the other side of the river. But here the problem arose there are only two ferry to cross and it carries all the vehicles from trucks to buses and cars as well. Due to some reason they were taking only selected vehicles and the process being too slow. There was more than a kilometer of cars and trucks lined up. All of the tourists were getting agitated because the line was not moving and the ferry was also not running because of the fiasco created by the agency running the entire system there. After waiting for around 2 hours we decided to leave the taxi and cross the river by the small boat carrying the passengers only. So we left the taxi and went to the boat. This was the best thing we could do, so we went down near the boats usually they carried around18-20 passengers in one trip but one of them offered to take only 4 of us in only Rs 40. We agreed and sat on it with our luggage even though we took hardly 3-4 minutes and that was too good.

Namkhana Ferry Ghat

Photo of Namkhana Ferry Ghat, Namkhana, West Bengal, India by anila

The river was flowing in its fullest speed and there were fishing boats around and we crossed that river just standing on the boat. On the other side we had to pay the tax as well which was Re 1 , unbelievable!!!

Note: If you are going by your own car you will have to wait in a line to cross by the ferry so the other options are:

Option 1: take a train from Howrah to Namakhana, cross the river by the passenger boat and take a cab or bus to Bakkhali.

Option 2: Take cab till Namakhana nead the ferry point and take cross the river by the boat and then bus or cab to Bakkhali.

Option 3: Take a bus till Namakhana and cross the river by boat and the take another bus or cab from the other side of the river to Bakkhali.

Then we went to the bus stand where instead of waiting for the bus we opted a van as we were getting impatient to reach there. In 40 minutes we were at the gate of our hotel. It was Hotel Ambravati. Went to our rooms got fresh and ready to hit the beach it was dusk. The beach was not more than 400 meters away.

Photo of Bakkhali, West Bengal, India by anila

The beach facilities are well provided for the tourists. There are paved informal spaces, shops, parking space and public toilet is also built.

Photo of Bakkhali, West Bengal, India by anila

We moved where we heard the waves and first thing that we saw was a row of fresh fish stalls. There were around 6-7 kiosks where one can have fresh fish as cooked in different style.

Bakkhali Sea Beach Market

Photo of Bakkhali Sea Beach Market, Bakkhali, West Bengal, India by anila

Not being a sea food lover this was the first time that I saw so many varieties of fishes. Being hungry we ordered a few prawns, stingrey and pomfret (one that I learnt to eat in my Chandipur trip). Fresh, fried and best.

Note: Don’t miss trying these here, they cook it for the customers there in front of you and they have a huge variety.

Photo of Bakkhali, West Bengal, India by anila

After having our stomach full we went close to the waves and spent some time there with waves in our feet and clouds on the top.

After spending some time on the beach we headed back to the hotel.

It was going to be a bright and beautiful day. We took our breakfast in the hotel and planned to go to Henry’s Island first. This spot was approximately 7 kms from the hotel. We booked an e-rickshaw so that’s it’s easier to return from there. Once we got down there and started moving we realized we were amid the mangrove forests.

Henry's Island Beach

The water level had covered the main stem of the trees we first walked on the path made by filling the soil and keeping it compact with the help of retaining wall.

Then came the bamboo bridge painted blue and white which was kind of cute. In the mangrove forest this little bridge definitely stood out.

Photo of Henry's Island Beach, West Bengal, India by anila

As we crossed the bamboo bridge we could see a wide area of swampy land and the trees were all colorful. Apart from green there were leaves and wild flowers of yellow, orange, pink, white, purple etc.

Photo of Bakkhali : The place unknown and roads unmeasured, unveiled beaches and beauty undefined. by anila

After this again we crossed the path made with the help of retaining wall and the construction was still in progress.

Photo of Henry's Island Beach, West Bengal, India by anila

Next was the groove like way, exposed brick paving and the walkway is covered with tree branches and climbers from both sides.

Walking across this pathway it felt like a whole new place and once the brick paving ended we stepped on the white sand beach, fine white grains and a little muddy because of the delta region. It was such a small and calm beach and there were note more than 15-20 visitors. There are Kiawe trees scattered on the beach and because of these thorny trees the beach are is more confined.

Photo of Henry's Island Beach, West Bengal, India by anila

We tried to make our way among these thorny trees and away from the crowd . moving just 15-20 meters away we were all hidden from the crowd all alone watching the waves rising , roaring and falling and kissing our feet.

A place where one can hear only nature, the music of the sea. The water is muddy but the beach is clean.

Waves, Adventure and me.

Photo of Henry's Island Beach, West Bengal, India by anila

We spent around 45 minutes there walking, talking and playing around and moved back to the parking.

Being stupid is a trait, everyone cannot master it.

Can never miss this pose.

Henry's Island Watchtower

While moving back we went over the watchtower. This has been built to enjoy the view of the Sundarbans forest and we didn’t wanted to miss it. Here’s few of the view to share: the vast stretch of the Sundarbans forest merging with the sea. What a beauty nature has for us to enjoy.

Where we got the full view of the mangrove forest.

The deltaic region.

We then went to the crocodile breeding center which fell short with our expectations.

Photo of Bakkhali : The place unknown and roads unmeasured, unveiled beaches and beauty undefined. by anila

It’s a very small place with barely 2-3 crocodiles to be spotted but more than that there is an area where they breed spotted deer.

Few swings and some benches with shaded areas, a pond and few houses of the employees there, that’s it.

A little nap when the sun was on top of us.

Photo of Bakkhali : The place unknown and roads unmeasured, unveiled beaches and beauty undefined. by anila

They are still developing the place and we had our time joking around and having fun.

Photo of Bakkhali : The place unknown and roads unmeasured, unveiled beaches and beauty undefined. by anila

Back to hotel for lunch and a little rest. We wanted to visit Jambu dwip but we were running short of time so we planned to skip it.

Note: Keep a day separate for Jambu dwip a beautiful and isolated island. A little adventure on the sea.

We planned to visit Frazerganj beach which was again approximately 5-6 kms away. So we took an e-rickshaw.

Photo of Bakkhali : The place unknown and roads unmeasured, unveiled beaches and beauty undefined. by anila

As we were approaching the beach we saw the wind mills for which this place is known. There are few building structures which are ruined and there was only one kiosk there. This beach was different from the Henry’s island it is dark sand beach. The waves were way far from the beach around 600 meters away but as the sand was wet we can say that the at night the beach faces the rashes of high tides.

Frazerganj Sea Beach

Photo of Frazerganj Sea Beach, Bakkhali, West Bengal, India by anila

The broken structures and brick walls were scattered ahead. The villagers have tried to put in all of these broken pieces together with the help of bamboo and woods, a kind of retaining wall.

Photo of Frazerganj Sea Beach, Bakkhali, West Bengal, India by anila

We walked on the beach and were amazed by its stretch there were no other tourists expect for us only few villagers were there. We enjoyed the sun and walked on that dark sad beach.

Photo of Frazerganj Sea Beach, Bakkhali, West Bengal, India by anila

As we were walking we saw a group of fishermen repairing the boat and it was one of the rarest and amusing sights. First they would put the black tar and the splash the diesel and finally flame it.

the boat that they were mending.

Photo of Frazerganj Sea Beach, Bakkhali, West Bengal, India by anila

We kept moving and soon we saw the red crabs. I had read about the red crabs in this beach but had never imagined to see them in such a huge number.

Crabs, crabs... everywhere crabs. Beach full of red crabs.

Photo of Frazerganj Sea Beach, Bakkhali, West Bengal, India by anila

Initially we would walk towards them and they’d hide in the sand and as we would cross them and turn they’d peep out of their holes. Amusing and cute as well. It was difficult to get few clicks of them. We didn’t want to miss a chance to shoot them and capture few moments of them running around.

He kept posing and dancing for the camera. The star of the beach.

Photo of Frazerganj Sea Beach, Bakkhali, West Bengal, India by anila

So we came up with a plan Bikram placed his camera near one of the holes made by the crab and four of us dispersed and then started the chase. We tried to push the crabs towards the camera and finally were successful in doing so and captured a few red crabs running around. We did it thrice and it was fun.

That friendly crab, who made our day.

Photo of Frazerganj Sea Beach, Bakkhali, West Bengal, India by anila

One of the crabs became too friendly with the camera and kept dancing it front of it.

Wooh, what a spectacular moment it was to see such a long stretch of the beach.

Photo of Frazerganj Sea Beach, Bakkhali, West Bengal, India by anila

We kept walking and enjoying the peace and calmness. The beach has a vast stretch we kept walking and couldn’t see its end.

Photo of Frazerganj Sea Beach, Bakkhali, West Bengal, India by anila

The wind mills, dark and fine sand, long stretch, crabs and waves... all in one.

Photo of Frazerganj Sea Beach, Bakkhali, West Bengal, India by anila

There were local kids playing football on the beach and our friends also stopped by to play a little with them.

Photo of Frazerganj Sea Beach, Bakkhali, West Bengal, India by anila

The place was so amazing and peaceful that I must share the calmness and few captures of the place.

We spent around 2-3 hrs there and then moved to the Bakkhali beach where we planned to capture the sunset.

Our local savaari

Unfortunately the sun went down hiding behind the clouds but we were not disheartened instead we loved the clouds and the blue sky of the dusk.

The sky is beautiful when its dusk, it gives hope of brighter tomorrow.

It grew dark and clouds came rolling over , the cold breeze was still that pleasing.

The super-man shot

We again wanted to have some sea food so ordered variety of fishes again and it was our dinner. Then back to the hotel after the tiring day.

That morning we had to leave from Bakkhali .Thinking of other alternatives around we decided to take the bus back to Kolkata. Morning at 6:30 there is a state bus but we did not get the seat as they had already been booked.

Note: It’s better to book the bus tickets a day before to avoid any hassle.

Bakkhali Bus Stand

Time to say goodbye to Bakkhali

Photo of Bakkhali Bus Stand, Bakkhali, West Bengal, India by anila

So we took the next bus which was at 7:00 am. When we reached Namakhana it was 8:15 around and the ferry had not started yet on enquiring we found that it would start plying from 9:30 am. We had an hour more so we move around and took breakfast at a small hotel there.

Namkhana Ferry Ghat (Bakkhali Bank)

Finally the ferry started but there were around 10-12 vehicles ahead of us and we thought that that the wait will be long. But luck strikes at the right time being the state government bus in the second trip our bus was taken across. It was fun to ride on a bus which was on the boat on Hoogley River.

The fishermen going on duty

Crossed and the journey started as usual. We reached Kolkata by 1:00 pm. And were hungry so rushed to Dharamtala and had an amazing lunch at The Scoop. Met some old friends. Finally time to go home so took the train at 10:10 pm and got comfortable and sat together recollecting few memories of this small weekend trip.

Never miss a chance to spoil his frame :P
