By The Numbers: Breaking Down The 2022 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Season

A thrilling and competitive 2022 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season is in the books with veteran driver Jon McKennedy having scored his first championship.

The Chelmsford, Massachusetts, native was competing in his second full-time Tour campaign, and he managed to hold off Ron Silk, Eric Goodale and Justin Bonsignore in points while driving for a new team led by Tim Lepine.

McKennedy’s championship was one of many highlights from a year that featured one of most compelling title fights in the history of the series. Many different drivers also managed to find success across the 16-race campaign that spanned from the Northeast all the way to Florida.

Below are some of the defining figures from the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour’s 38th season of competition.

1: The amount of races Jon McKennedy won during his championship season. McKennedy’s lone victory came at Claremont Motorsports Park on July 29.

3: The number of drivers who won a race for owner champion Tommy Baldwin Jr. Those drivers were Doug Coby (Riverhead Raceway, Lee USA Speedway and Langley Speedway), Jimmy Blewett (Wall Stadium Speedway) and Mike Christopher Jr. (Jennerstown Speedway).

3: The final position for veteran Eric Goodale in the Tour point standings. It was his best result across 14 full-time seasons in the series. Goodale’s previous best points finish was fifth, which came during the 2017 season.

4: The number of drivers who had a chance to win the 2022 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship ahead of the season finale at Martinsville Speedway. They were Jon McKennedy, Ron Silk, Eric Goodale and Justin Bonsignore.

4: The amount of races Justin Bonsignore won during the 2022 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season, more than any other driver this year. His victories took place at Richmond Raceway, Monadnock Speedway, Oswego Speedway and Riverhead Raceway.

4: The number of drivers who scored their first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour victories in 2022. Mike Christopher Jr. won at Jennerstown Speedway, Kyle Soper won at Riverhead Raceway, Anthony Nocella won at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, and Corey LaJoie won at Martinsville Speedway.

4: The number of poles Justin Bonsignore scored during the 2022 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season, more than any other driver. Of the races he started on pole, (Richmond Raceway, Monadnock Speedway, New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Riverhead Raceway), the only one he did not win came at New Hampshire, where he placed 12th.

5: The number of drivers who recorded double-digit top 10s during the 2022 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season. That list includes the four championship contenders in Jon McKennedy (13), Ron Silk (12), Eric Goodale (11) and Justin Bonsignore (11), as well as Doug Coby (11).

5: The final position for 2022 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour rookie of the year Austin Beers in the point standings. Beers was the only Rookie of the Year candidate to compete in all 16 races on the schedule, scoring a season-best finish of third at Langley Speedway on Aug. 27.

6.1: The average finish owners champion Tommy Baldwin Jr.’s No. 7 Modified recorded during the 2022 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season with Doug Coby, Jimmy Blewett and Mike Christopher Jr. sharing driving duties.

7: The number of top-five finishes by Matt Hirschman in as many NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour starts in 2022. His worst finish in Tour competition came at Oswego Speedway, where he finished fifth.

7.2: The average finish champion Jon McKennedy recorded in 16 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour races this year, which ranked higher than any other driver who ran the full schedule. Ron Silk was second of the full-time competitors with a 7.3 average finish.

8: The amount of top-five finishes Ron Silk scored during the 2022 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season, which led all other drivers.

9: The final position for Doug Coby in the 2022 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour point standings despite not running the full schedule. In 12 starts, Coby tallied three victories — at Riverhead Raceway, Lee USA Speedway and Langley Speedway.

9: The number of drivers who earned a pole during the 2022 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season. Justin Bonsignore led the way with four poles, while Matt Hirschman followed closely behind with three. Ron Silk and Jake Johnson each earned two poles while Doug Coby, Tyler Rypkema, Timmy Solomito, Ronnie Williams  and Jimmy Blewett all tallied one each.

11: The number of drivers who scored a victory during the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season. Justin Bonsignore led the list with four wins, followed by Doug Coby’s three victories. Nine other drivers scored one victory each, including Jon McKennedy, Eric Goodale, Craig Lutz, Matt Hirschman, Mike Christopher Jr., Kyle Soper, Jimmy Blewett, Anthony Nocella and Corey LaJoie.

13: The amount of top-10 finishes champion Jon McKennedy recorded during the 2022 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season, which led all drivers.

Three Way Fight: Breaking Down The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Driver Championship Standings

whelen modified tour standings 2022

(Press Release from NASCAR Integrated Marketing Communications)

whelen modified tour standings 2022

Jon McKennedy has slightly more breathing room to work with in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour standings following Saturday’s Toyota Bud Mod Classic 150 at Oswego Speedway.

Entering the race with just a three-point advantage, McKennedy stayed out of trouble all evening while the second-place points driver in 2011 champion Ron Silk was forced to make a late pit stop, which increased McKennedy’s lead to 10 points.

Although McKennedy and Silk have primarily controlled the top two spots during the summer, a third contender has entered the conversation in three-time champion Justin Bonsignore. By winning at Oswego on Saturday, Bonsignore only trails McKennedy by 17 points with just three races remaining on the 2022 schedule.

Below is a breakdown of how the top 10 drivers in the standings fared during the Toyota Bud Mod Classic 150, along with a complete look at the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour standings.

  • Jon McKennedy: 492 points

As has been the theme for most of the 2022 season, McKennedy enjoyed a calm evening at Oswego to settle for a solid, sixth-place finish. Maintaining consistent runs will be imperative for McKennedy over the final three races if he wants to keep Silk and Bonsignore behind him.

  • Ron Silk: 482 points

For most of the Toyota Bud Mod Classic 150, Silk was running right with McKennedy until he was forced to make a late, unscheduled stop. Silk’s 13 th place finish at Oswego will now force him to play both offense and defense as he attempts to claim his second NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour title.

  • Justin Bonsignore: 475 points

Two poor early-season finishes at New Smyrna Speedway and Riverhead Raceway are the primary reason why Bonsignore is not atop the point standings. Now armed with three wins on the year, momentum is shifting in Bonsignore’s favor to win a third consecutive title in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour.

  • Eric Goodale: 465 points

Goodale remains a dark horse contender for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour title, but he has work to do after Oswego. A ninth place run for Goodale on Saturday gives him eight Top 10s on the 2022 season, yet Bonsignore’s victory caused him to fall from third to four in the standings.

  • Kyle Bonsignore: 445 points

The other Bonsignore did everything possible to overtake his cousin during the final laps of Saturday’s Toyota Bud Mod Classic 150. Kyle ended up settling for fifth, matching a season-best three top-five finishes that he originally set last year.

  • Austin Beers*: 441 points

After tallying a career-best performance of third at Langley Speedway last weekend, Beers ended up getting a reality check on Saturday evening. Beers struggled to maintain solid track position at the front of the field and ended up finishing in 12 th .

  • Tommy Catalano: 438 points

The Bud Mod Classic 150 was a night to forget for Catalano. He finished two laps down in the 17 th  position; his worst run on the 2022 season since New Hampshire Motor Speedway, where he finished 20 th  after blowing an engine.

  • Craig Lutz: 429 points

Lutz has quietly turned his season around after finding Victory Lane at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park. Lutz mixed it up with the Bonsignores and Chuck Hossfeld during the final laps of the Toyota Bud Mod Classic 150 and ultimately came home in third for his second top five of 2022.

  • Doug Coby: 368 points

Despite now being a part-time competitor in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, Coby remains one of the most efficient drivers in the series with three wins on the year. The six-time champion enjoyed plenty of time out front at Oswego on Saturday but diverging pit strategies forced him to settle for seventh

  • J.B. Fortin: 339 points

An early accident set the tone for Fortin’s night at Oswego. He finished in the 22 nd  position and has not recorded a top 10 since finishing third at Jennerstown Speedway back on May 28.

Keep the Top 5’s Rolling Jon ….. Your on the VERGE of your FIRST Modified Tour Championship …. We always Knew you had the TALENT….. just needed some racing luck and top notch equipment to seal the deal …. Just keep doing what your doing and the Title will be yours …

I watch a fair amount of racing on TV including the Whelen Modified Broadcasts. I occasionally see Sprint Cars in person. I love Sprint Cars on dirt. There is nothing like watching a driver running the top battling with one running the bottom groove. The advantage of watching it on TV is the long TV lenses and replays plus the extra angles multiple cameras bring. TV does not have the smells and noise of horsepower. The TV announcers talk way to much. Radio announcers talk less. The pictures and graphics are plenty unless they don’t include the car numbers. I wish I could get the noises and no announcers. That would be worth extra money.

It’s strange to only see 9 drivers starting every race!

No disrespect Jake, but my money is on silk. Just extremely consistent. I think he does just enough to get it.

Only 9 drivers started every race last year too.

Season and drivers to start every WMT race according to racing-reference

Tommy Baldwin Racing on Top of Whelen Modified Tour Owners Standings with Two Races Remaining

A dream season is nearly complete for Tommy Baldwin Racing on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. With three different drivers behind the wheel through the first 14 races of the season, Baldwin’s No. 7NY team leads the Whelen Modified Tour owner’s championship standings by 38 points with just two races remaining.

Trips to Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park (October 9) and Martinsville Speedway (October 27) will help decide the owner’s championship – but two strong finishes will be more than enough to collect Baldwin his first championship on the Whelen Modified Tour as a car owner. In fact, with a strong run at Thompson, the team could seal it up early.

whelen modified tour standings 2022

It’s been a team effort this season. Whether it was six-time series champion Doug Coby – who drove the most races so far – veteran Jimmy Blewett, or rising star Mike Christopher Jr, all three drivers have been to Victory Lane and run inside the top-five when they strapped in behind the wheel on the NASCAR circuit. The team has also been to victory lane in many open modified races up and down the East Coast.

“We’ve just had a great year, not only on the Whelen Modified Tour, but also across the board in our Open Modified shows with wins and top-fives,” Baldwin Jr. said. “We still have two more races to finish it out on the NASCAR Tour and we want to go out on top. It’s special. We’ve been working hard for a long time and it’s finally looking like it’s going to pay off in the biggest way.”

The year started with a third-place finish with Christopher Jr. at New Smyrna Speedway and continued with Blewett wheeling the car to a seventh-place finish at Richmond Raceway. Coby jumped in the seat for two straight wins at Riverhead Raceway and Lee USA Speedway, then Christopher captured the third straight for the team, winning at Jennerstown Speedway.

whelen modified tour standings 2022

Since then, Coby has driven the car to another win at Langley Speedway, while Blewett also carried the checkered flag at his home track, Wall Stadium Speedway. Overall, in 14 championship events, the team has only failed to finish once and has been inside the top-10 in all of the other races.

“All three drivers are worthy of having the opportunity to race with our group,” Baldwin said. “Coby needs no introduction with his resume, and we can’t thank him enough for keeping us up front. Working with Jimmy goes deeper than just driving, as we are both friends and have been for years. Winning at his home track with him was definitely one of the highlights of the season. And with Mike Christopher Jr., I enjoy working with the upcoming stars of the sport, especially one in the Christopher family. His name alone gives you the feeling he’s a winner, and he’s been there for us multiple times this year.”

Coby understood the assignment from day one – to go out there and win races. But it wasn’t right away that he realized the team had a shot to make history as owner’s champions.

“It was certainly unexpected from my side of things to be contributing to the effort,” Coby said. “Tommy wasn’t someone I knew overly well prior to the season. We knew each other, and talked in passing, but we weren’t best friends. It just seemed like after winning Riverhead (Raceway) and Lee (USA Speedway) back-to-back in our first races together, we just all clicked and started thinking about the potential for the owner’s championship. To not be in contention for a driver’s title this year, I wasn’t even planning on running as many races as I have. I hope it all works out for Tommy to finish it off with as dominant of a car he’s had all year in the last few races.”

Coby, like many in the Modified community, knows the owner’s championship would mean a lot to Baldwin, for many reasons.

“For Tommy, it’s about legacy and his family history,” Coby said. “It’s his dad’s car number, his father’s legacy in a Modified… and his. It really runs deep for a lot of people who were friends and crew members with Tommy’s dad and everyone on Long Island to see him have this much success.”

“Finishing it off would be special,” Baldwin said. “There’s been a lot of years of winning races in the Modifieds and coming close to winning championships like this. But capturing this crown on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour after the season we’ve had, it just seems fitting. The 7NY is a special number to me… but also a lot of other people in the community. And to hoist a championship in the NASCAR Modifieds with that number… it would be a moment we would never forget.”

The next event for the Tommy Baldwin Racing team on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will take place at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on Sunday, October 9. For more information on the team, visit their Facebook page for updates.

What's changing for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour in 2022?

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour kicks off its 38th season Saturday at Florida’s New Smyrna Speedway with the running of the New Smyrna Visitors Bureau 200 live on FloRacing .

A new season usually means changes, and this year there’s been plenty of change ahead of the upcoming campaign. But never fear, race fans. You’ve come to the right place to get caught up.

New streaming partner

The first big change was mentioned above, and that is all NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour events will be streamed live on FloRacing .

For the last couple of seasons, these races were streamed on NBC Sports Gold’s TrackPass and before that on FansChoice.TV. However, on Dec. 2, NASCAR and FloSports announced a new multi-year partnership that will see the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, the ARCA Mendards Series, NASCAR Pinty‘s Series and NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series events and tracks all broadcast live on FloRacing.com.

More than 280 races are expected to be streamed live as part of the new agreement.

OK, we know that in Modifieds circles, “Big Money” is usually referring to Matt Hirschman, but we’re talking about the payout for each of the 16 races on the calendar this year. In 2021, the winner of each race took home at least $10,000, and that number will rise in 2022 .

As part of the previously mentioned new streaming contract with FloRacing, there will be a new awards bonus for finishing positions 1-20. The race winner will take home a $1,500 bonus from FloRacing, while second place will receive $1,000. The third-place finisher will receive $900, fourth place will receive $800, $700 for fifth place, and $600 for sixth. Positions seven-10 will take home $500. Positions 11-15 will take home $300 and $200 will go to finishers in positions 16 through 20.

In 2021, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour awarded more than $1.3 million to competitors. That number will in 2022 More info: https://t.co/5T04wfc5N6 #NWMT pic.twitter.com/N8PchT11uI — NASCAR Roots (@NASCARRoots) February 2, 2022

Familiar voices in new roles

NASCAR announced recently that the Modified Tour will have full-time announcers. Those announcers are none other than the legendary Ben Dodge and Joe Coss , two names of which Modified fans and racing fans from New England are already very familiar.

Dodge has long been the voice of Connecticut‘s Stafford Motor Speedway, as well as the voice of the Modifieds at New Smyrna Speedway‘s World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing every February.

Coss’ voice has been heard reverberating from the speakers at tracks such as New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Daytona International Speedway.

Now, fans at each race track the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour visits will hear their voices, as well as the fans watching from home live on FloRacing.

New home for Silk and Moran

Ron Silk and Phil Moran have been around the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour for quite some time and have each reached the pinnacle of success with the Tour. Silk won the championship as a driver in 2011, and Moran won the championship multiple times as Doug Coby‘s crew chief.

Now the two are paired together with a team new to the series. Tyler Haydt and Joe Yannone are the owners of the new Haydt Yannone Racing team for which Silk and Moran will race the whole season together.

Coby steps back

Speaking of Coby, fans of the Modified Tour won‘t be seeing as much of the six-time champion as we‘re all used to.

Coby recently announced that his team currently has just four Modified Tour events on their calendar. The first of those events will be the race on July 16 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. He also will be at Thompson Speedway on Aug. 17 and Oct. 8, and he‘ll also be competing in the season finale for the Modified Tour at Virginia‘s Martinsville Speedway on Oct. 27.

The 2022 season will be the third campaign for Coby‘s new Doug Coby Racing team. Coby will have John McKenna as his crew chief, someone with whom he‘s already very familiar. Coby and McKenna won the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship together in 2012, the first of Coby‘s six titles.

The 16-race schedule has plenty of tracks that have been on the schedule before, but also plenty of new and different events.

It starts off with a 200-lap race at New Smyrna Speedway on Feb. 12. The Tour-type Modifieds are not strangers to the half-mile oval that sits about 10 miles south of Daytona International Speedway, but this week marks the first time that the track will host a NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event.

RELATED : Complete Whelen Modified Tour schedule

New Hampshire‘s Lee USA Speedway will see a visit from the Tour in May. While the track has hosted the Tour before, it hasn’t since Ed Flemke Jr. won back in 1998.

Another New Hampshire track will also be returning to the calendar after a lengthy time away. That track is the third-mile Claremont Speedway in Claremont, New Hampshire. Claremont has hosted the Modified Tour twice in its history, once in 1985, which was won by Richie Evans, and again in 2007, which was won by James Civali.

Connecticut‘s Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park will host two races in August and October. Thompson was absent from the 2021 calendar.

This year marks the first time since 1988 that Stafford Motor Speedway will not host the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour.

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour is set to open its 2022 season on Feb. 12, and the historic series will do so at a fresh venue — New Smyrna Speedway.

The Florida half-mile asphalt oval, which opened in 1967, will play host to the start of the 38th season of modern-day Modified Tour racing for the first time. It consistently hosts weekly racing, including the “World Series of Asphalt Auto Racing” during NASCAR’s Speedweeks.

The ARCA Menards Series East has opened its season at New Smyrna since 2014 (previously K&N Series East from 2014-19).

Martinsville Speedway hosted the Whelen Modified Tour season-opener this year in a return to “The Paperclip” after 11 years away in a race won by Eric Goodale.

The remainder of the 2022 schedule will be released at a later date.

The series is close to wrapping its current season, with Friday’s Virginia Is For Racing Lovers 150 at Richmond Raceway (7 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Gold TrackPass), followed by a pair of races at Riverhead Raceway (9/18) and Stafford Motor Speedway (9/25).

Hello, When will the schedule be released for the Whelen Modified tour in New Smyrna in order to register and make travel arrangements?

Beth, the best place to check for updates on this would be either NASCAR’s website ( https://www.nascar.com/whelen-modified-tour/ ) or New Smyrna’s ( http://www.newsmyrnaspeedway.org/ ). Thanks for your question.

Silk avoids calamity to score in nwmt new smyrna opener.

The former champion shook the frustrations of a winless season on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour with a victory to kick off the new year.

whelen modified tour standings 2022

Ron Silk may have finished second in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour standings in 2022, but a zero in the win column at year’s end left the 2011 NWMT champion feeling unfulfilled.

Fulfillment came early this year.

Silk prevailed in a late-race dogfight with Justin Bonsignore to win Saturday night’s New Smyrna Beach Area Visitors Bureau 200 at New Smyrna Speedway, one of the opening events of New Smyrna Speedway’s World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing and the season opener for NASCAR’s oldest and only active open-wheel division.

“I knew it was a good chance to get one, so I didn’t want to let it slip away,” Silk said of his first NWMT win since 2021. “I had a really good car all last year and couldn’t find victory lane.”

The Norwalk, Conn. veteran started third after rain forced an early end to time trials, but he flew under the radar for the first half of the race. Polesitter Doug Coby set the pace early on, then led a number of veterans down pit road for early adjustments under the second caution of the night. While Austin Beers and Eric Goodale ran out front, Silk was content to ride.

A lap-87 spin reset the race strategy, cycling Coby and Silk back to the front. Coby, returning to the Tour full-time for champion car owner Tommy Baldwin, set sail on the restart, building a lead of nearly two seconds on a long green-flag run as Silk, Tommy Catalano and Beers navigated slower traffic.

Beers had cleared Catalano for third when contact between Craig Lutz and Jake Johnson drew a caution flag with 42 laps to go, opening the window for late pit stops. Catalano opted to stay on old tires, beating Coby out of the pits. Silk lined up fifth for the restart, behind defending race winner Matt Hirschman and reigning Tour champion Jon McKennedy.

Catalano spun his tires on the start, dropping him from the pack as Hirschman pounced on Coby for the race lead. Coby swung back under Hirschman to take the lead back, but Silk slipped through the open door to steal the top spot. Bonsignore followed Silk through, taking the point ever briefly.

But as Silk dove under Bonsignore entering turn one, Bonsignore seemed to slow down, stacking up the field and spinning off Coby’s bumper. McKennedy, Goodale and Jimmy Blewett were among those who piled into the mess, while Hirschman dodged the carnage to restart second.

Silk brought the field to green with 24 laps remaining, clearing Hirschman quickly as Bonsignore charged back into contention. The three-time champion worked over Hirschman to take second, then set his sights on Silk with twenty circuits left. Bonsignore pulled out all the stops to get past Silk, even trying a slide job to take the lead with five laps to go.

Silk charged right back, reclaiming the lead and leaving Bonsignore to fend off Hirschman in the final laps.

“I think we were both driving a little bit over our heads,” Silk said.

Bonsignore held on for second, a welcome rebound from his results in last year’s New Smyrna lidlifter. Hirschman, who started 17th and ran mid-pack until the final stint, settled for third.

Anthony Sesely, fresh off his fourth win in the Atlantic City Indoor Race Gambler’s Classic, finished a career-best fourth in a car prepared by Connecticut Modified ace Stephen Kopcik. Coby, who avoided major damage in the incident with Bonsignore, opened the drive for his seventh Tour title with a fifth-place run.

Jake Johnson rallied from his late spin to finish sixth, ahead of veteran Dave Sapienza, who earned his first Tour top-ten finish since 2021 with some assistance from Modified alumnus Ryan Preece. Beers, Anthony Nocella and Catalano rounded out the top ten. McKennedy, hampered by damage from the late wreck, limped to a 24th-place finish to open his title defense.

Disparate pit strategies and the late wreck at the front of the pack allowed some of Modified racing’s rising stars, like Johnson, Beers and Catalano, to log laps up front and showcase their potential.

But Saturday’s race was about potential realized for Silk, who delivered car owners Tyler Haydt and Joe Yannone a seemingly-overdue first NWMT victory.

Silk joined Haydt-Yannone Racing in 2020, running the team’s car in select open shows while balancing full-time rides for Tour car owner Kevin Stuart and Tri-Track Series stalwart Bob Horn. Haydt and Silk increased their schedule in 2021, with Silk winning Thompson Speedway’s Icebreaker opener and finishing third in Tri-Track points. Silk committed to HYR full-time for 2022, closing out a four-year Tour run for Stuart with wins at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway and Oswego Speedway.

When Doug Coby scaled his plans back, crew chief Phil Moran joined HYR, setting up the Pennsylvania-based team for championship contention.

Silk, Moran and HYR were not without success in 2022, winning a World Series feature at New Smyrna and capturing the Fall Final at Stafford Motor Speedway under the Tri-Track Series banner. In NWMT competition, they won two poles and finished worse than 13th only once. But the runner-up effort in the points standings came with a best finish of second.

This year, Silk and Moran got the winning out of the way early.

It seems unlikely that they will be content to stop there.
