Wonderful all around experience!!! Michele and John were personable and made our experience the best with excellent wine and beautiful views of the Willamette Valley! Would highly recommend to anyone looking to experience the w Oregon wine country!!

wine tours in portland oregon

Our tour with Michele and John exceeded our expectations! Our pickup was prompt and our drive through the beautiful countryside of the area to 4 amazing wineries was very professional. Their wealth of knowledge of the wine country area, wine and beyond was shared in a fun, friendly and exciting way. We loved each of the wineries they took us to for very special wine tastings. They are absolutely the ones you want to spend your time with on a wine tasting tour. We had such a great day…thanks tons❤️

a group of people posing for the camera

The whole wine tasting event was fantastic from beginning. We were picked up at the door of our Airbnb by our hosts Michele, who taught us about the wines of Oregon and her husband John who drove us everywhere. We went to 3 wineries that were all unique with friendly and knowledgeable staff. Had a great lunch and was treated extra special because it was my birthday. I would highly recommend this to anyone if they want a small group rather than a bus load of people.

a group of people sitting at a table with food

We had the BEST time with Michele! She and her husband picked us up at our Airbnb in Portland and drove us in a nice comfortable van to three different vineyards throughout the day. Michele shared lots of helpful information with us, thoughtfully led us to a mid- day lunch at a celiac friendly vineyard, and had prepared snacks and waters for us to eat between stops! She truly thought of everything and was so easy to talk with. My husband and I were with his parents on the trip and while they had never been to a winery, we’ve done multiple trips to Napa Valley. All four of us had a delightful time!! The Willamette Valley is a beautiful place and we saw so much more of it thanks to Michele and Triangle Wine Country! 100% recommend!

We had a phenomenal experience with Triangle Wine Country tours for our team retreat in the Willamette Valley. Michele thoughtfully chose three wineries that not only exceeded our expectations but also gave us a true experience of the valley and its unique wine offerings. Michele was extremely knowledgeable of both winemaking and the region which added an awesome learning experience for our party of 7. I'd recommend this tour company over and over again.

wine tours in portland oregon

This tour was amazing! My friends and I did not want to worry about driving so all of us could enjoy our tastings, and we loved they picked us up from our airbnb (Lake Oswego) area). They were punctual, the van was very nice, clean, and roomy for our party of 5 and Michele was a great combo of informative, fun, but also let our group have our time together. Her husband was a very good driver and nice to chat with. They were both such a delight and this tour was amazing! The Durant winery they took us for lunch was delicious and also has olive oil! Will always recommend.

There aren’t enough kind words to say about Michele, John, and Triangle wine tours! Michele is so knowledgeable and passionate about wine! All the places we went to had incredible views and delicious wine. Michele & John had everything arranged for us so we just showed up and drank wine, a carefree day! We couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend our day in Willamette Valley!

a group of people sitting on a green bench

Our day of wine tasting with Triangle Wine Tours was absolutely perfect. Michele was easy to communicate with and used her expert knowledge to pick the wineries for our tour. We were picked up right outside of our hotel in downtown Portland in a comfy van. They provided snacks as well as a download on the area and wine industry. They made sure we got 5-star service at all the wineries, and we even got to taste a few extra wines that weren’t on our flights. The Triangle Wine team made the whole process so easy and fun. I would definitely recommend them for your wine tasting tour!

wine tours in portland oregon

We couldn't have asked for a better wine tasting tour. Michele and John were very knowledgeable and courteous. They took us to three amazing wineries in the Willamette Valley that we never would have discovered on our own. On our way, in their comfortable van, safely driven by John, Michele taught us about the history of wine making in Oregon and prepared us for what each winery specialized in, enhancing our experience. Each winery had quality wines and breath-taking views. We will be back.

I’d strongly recommend Triangle for your tour. Downright good people and knowledgeable about wine and the area. They’ve done their homework. Fabulous experience!!

Wow. Best experience. Wealth of knowledge. so Willing to please. Worth every penny, much better than doing it on your own. Best guides. Super recommended!!

a smiling man and woman posing for a picture

Triangle Wine Country Tours is THE choice for touring the Willamette Valley. John and Michele are wonderful. Their communication is great. Since we did some touring on our own the day before, we let them pick and book all of our tour stops - and they picked some great ones! The van was large and comfortable and had everything we needed. Of course, John and Michele will take care of special requests. They will definitely work with you to make the perfect trip and tour! Highly recommend!

Best wine tour in the Willamette Valley! We booked a private tour for our group of 8 and could not have asked for a better experience. Michele and John were punctual, friendly, knowledgeable and overall great people. Every aspect of the tour was planned seamlessly and our every want, need and question was taken care of. Booking was super easy and Michele was a huge help in picking out the best wineries for our tastes. She was also great at communication before the tour. Michele and John also provided snacks and water in the van, which was impeccably clean and well maintained. We went to Sokol Blosser, Durant, and Furioso and had tables waiting for us upon arrival. We also had a charcuterie lunch at Durant that was just perfect. The timing of all the tastings was great and we never felt rushed. This is my second tour with Triangle Wine Country and I look forward to many more in the future.

wine tours in portland oregon

We had an awesome tasting experience with Michele & John. The wineries we visited were tailored as much as possible to 3 different preferences in wine, yet each stop offered delicious wines and beautiful atmosphere. Michele was highly knowledgeable regarding the wines, the wineries, and the area. It was a relaxing & comfortable way to tour & taste in an unfamiliar area. Would recommend this tour to anyone.

a group of people holding wine glasses and smiling at the camera

We booked the tour to celebrate a 28th birthday. It was a great experience from the booking to the drop-off. Michele and John were absolutely accommodating and fantastic! We had so much fun and learned a lot during the tour. We highly recommend!!!!!

a man and a woman sitting at a table eating food

This was a memorable experience and one that I'd repeat again with Triangle Wine Country Tours, as each tour is customized to your individual needs. Michele and John are highly knowledgeable about Oregon wines and all things wine-related. They have a very down-to-earth and pleasant approach and were a delight to spend the entire day with. An added bonus would be the personal relationships they have with wineries and winemakers throughout the Willamette Valley, which results in a very authentic experience.

wine tours in portland oregon

Michele took down every one of our wish list items and fulfilled them all. She and John were prompt and communicated well. John drove the comfortable, modern van safely. The three vineyards they chose for us were all very different, but all gorgeous. I have only been on 3 winery tours, but John and Michele, knowledgeable and considerate, were by far the most pleasant and enjoyable hosts!

a group of people posing for a photo

This was only my 3rd wine tour, but it outshone the others completely. John drove our group of 4 around safely and efficiently in a very comfortable van. Water and snacks were on board. Michele and John both are are very knowelegeable and we learned so much about wines and even more about the area. The 3 vineyards we visited were very different, but all spectacular. Every request we had made was fulfilled. I had talked on the phone to 2 other tour guides but did not get a good vibe from either. Fortunately, we went with Triangle and had the time of our lives with the nicest guides in the Willamette Valley. Visiting there is awesome and the tour was the high point of our vacation.

Taylor Cross et al. sitting on a bench

Had the most amazing time in Willamette thanks to Michele and John! 10/10 would recommend and definitely would come back to Portland just for another tour! Fabulous wineries, delicious wine and the most friendly tour guides! We learned a lot and had a blast. Thanks for such a memorable trip!

a man standing next to a fence

We booked a private tour for just the 2 of us, and what a delight it was! In consultation with Michele, we decided on 3 sites (two that we wanted to visit and a third that was among a short list of recommendations suggested by Michele). All reservations and arrangements were expertly handled by Michele; all communications were timely and clear. Most importantly, it was an awesome day! We tasted great wines, had expert information and insight from Michele throughout the day, and traveled safely and on schedule. And, we fell in love with a new vineyard that we wouldn't have known about without Michele's guidance! We strongly recommend Triangle Wine Country Tours!

Dillon was so genuine and knowledgeable. He sent us a questionnaire in advance of our trip to make sure the tour was customized to our likes and budget. He was on a first name basis with our winery hosts. You could tell they respected the tour company and our professional guide. Everyone was so welcoming and so passionate about their artisan craft. What a great day! Thank you Dillon!!!

This tour was amazing! After you book with the company, they send you a comprehensive survey to ensure they are planning your perfect day. It was so nice not to have to worry about getting lunch or driving ourselves around. Dillon, our driver, was very friendly and knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend this company to anyone looking to wine taste in the Oregon area!

What a fabulous experience! Jack was the absolute best! He picked us up at our Airbnb, explained local viticultural history as he drove us from vineyard to vineyard, took us to three wineries I'd never heard of (always wonderful to discover hidden gems!) and was just a wonderful guide all around - upbeat and down to earth. He was fully prepared with water on ice and provided a lovely lunch for us as well - and that BLT was incredible! I couldn't ask for a better way to travel through the vineyard country of Oregon. He took our group to three wonderful vineyards: Six Peaks (my personal favorite), Colene Clemens (truly outstanding) and Domaine Divio. We had at least five wines per tasting and came away with some truly gorgeous wines as souvenirs. We were never rushed and every question was answered (no matter how trivial). A very VIP experience from start to finish. I wish I could give Backcountry Tours 10 stars - will definitely book them again!

What a perfect day! We were staying at Silver Falls State Park so arranged to meet in Wilsonville. Nico picked us up promptly in a clean, comfortable van. Since no one else booked our joinable tour, we got a private tour. Nico provided a background on the Willamette Valley, its growing regions, wines, etc. on the way to our first vineyard. At first, I thought "Only three?" but as the day unfolded three were perfect. I love visiting smaller vineyards, talking with them about their wines, and enjoying the views. Having only three to visit made the day unhurried, and we were able to enjoy the wines and conversation. At two of the three, they pulled out additional wines or bubbles for us to taste and enjoy. I can't recommend Backcountry Wine Tours and Nico highly enough. When we're back, we'll be going out with them again.

Photo of Emily K.

Absolutely book this tour! Our guide Aron was incredibly knowledgeable and made it a fun day. They did a wine preference survey and were able to identify wineries based on our preferences. I especially like that they pick up and drop off from your place, so you don't have to worry about driving. Best tour- book it!

Photo of Robyn A.

We had a group of 8 people for our tour and had the pleasure of hanging out with Nico as our tour guide. The communication with the entire Backcountry Wine Tours staff from timely and thorough, without being overwhelming. Nico was prompt, easy going, and incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about wine. Backcountry selected the perfect wineries for us to visit. We all learned so much and couldn't have imagined a better experience. Worth every penny.

Awesome experience and now we're wine club members! Very belated, but my husband and I had an amazing day with Jack on a private vineyard tour around Memorial Day. He picked us up at our downtown hotel and took us to 3 superb vineyards. Each had really great wine and very personal touches, but also very unique from one another. Jack gave really interesting facts on the drive but also let us sleep between vineyards ...haha. He's clearly and expert who knows how to plan a day based on the clients he's with. The private tour is a pricier option but worthwhile and super special for wine lovers!

Photo of Lindsey E.

Backcountry Wine Tours is the way to go! We did the joinable tour so we had our group of 3 and another couple. Nico was our tour guide and he was fantastic! The wineries were picked based on a survey you complete ahead of time and the owner puts together the itinerary. They picked us up from our Airbnb and dropped us off. The lunch was from a local restaurant and we enjoyed it at one of the wineries. This was a great way to experience the best the Willamette Valley has to offer. 100% recommend!

A wine tour is a must when in Oregon. We booked a tour with this company and it was a breeze. We filled out a questionnaire after booking and Jack planned it all. If it's within the area, they will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel. We were with another couple on our tour and luckily we all got along. Our guide, Drew, was extremely knowledgable about the industry too. We ended up visiting 3 wineries plus a distillery (this was unplanned but we fit it in since we finished our first tasting early and it was close). We visited Trisaetum Winery, Killdeer Distilling, Arlyn (the tour company provided a charcuterie lunch here) and Benza Vineyards (my personal favorite). We really enjoyed all of the visits. We purchased a few bottles of wine while on the tour and can't wait for Backcountry to ship these to us. They will let you know the fees for shipping based on the number of bottles purchased and where you live. I definitely recommend Backcountry Wine Tours.

Couldn't recommend this company more. We did a private tour and picked one winery we wanted to go to and asked them to select the second two with some preferences related to our taste in wines. I've been out to Willamette a few times but have never relied on someone else to pick my wineries and I'm actually so glad I did! The wineries were top notch small producers. We found at least one new favorite and bought far more wine than anticipated because it was so good. The tour van was super comfortable and our driver Dillon was friendly, knowledgeable and professional without talking our ears off. We didn't have to worry about anything, got lunch and made it to our tasting windows on time with no hassle or fuss. Worth every penny and would definitely recommend.

EXCELLENT rating Based on 668 reviews Exceeded expectations - and the expectations were high :) Outstanding job! Backcountry Wine Tours deliveed a wonderful experience for our trip. They carefully listened to our requests on the in-take form and then used that information to put together a FABULOUS day for us. We loved the wineries that THEY selected. The van was so roomy and spacious and clean. Our driver, Michael, was awesome. Highly, highly recommend this company!!!! Highly, highly recommend Willamette Valley! debbiecastleberry 2023-11-09 Simply the best! Our driver was Michael and he was amazing! The wineries he chose were awesome and the experience was forgettable. We spoke to one wine maker, who provided our tasting experience, and we knew that was a treat and greatly appreciated that. Oregon wines are delicious and amazing! Lunch was provided and we were able to eat in the car between wineries (at our own pace). My hubby and I have done so many wine tours in California and Arizona and this one by far is at the top! I love that gratuity was automatically included, takes some stress away from the day. Also, Michael took beautiful scenic pictures, and sent them to us. Don’t hesitate, book your tour, you will not regret it. Thank you Backcountry Wine Tours and a huge thank you to Michael! Christina M 2023-11-08 Book with Backcountry! We had a great time with Backcountry Wine Tours! They scheduled out a perfect day of touring/ visiting three wonderful wineries. Dillon was very informative and timely! We really enjoyed the tours he set up for us. The wines were delicious and the views were fantastic. We met very kind people at each stop and would not have had such a coordinated day without the help of Backcountry. They made our day enjoyable and stress free. rachelcalagna96 2023-11-07 Exceptional 2 day tour in Willamette Valley! We wanted to visit some of the more obscure wineries and were delighted with both Michael (1st day) & Aaron (2nd day) and the choices they made. We went 6 for 6 buying wine from each place we visited over the 2 days. If you're looking for a great experience (and who isn't?) look no further than Backcountry Wine Tours. Lee B 2023-11-04 Wine! Wine! Wine! It was a great day. We enjoyed the vineyards, the ride and the lunch. Everything was right on time. The day got rave reviews from all 7 people in our party. specialk_est_2023 2023-10-31 Outstanding Tour Guide Amy was outstanding! We were 3 couples visiting the Willamette Valley for the first time and interested in touring the wine country. Amy arranged everything at the vineyards she and we both selected (go with her recommended smaller vineyards), picked us up each morning from our B&B, did all the driving in her roomy van and dropped us off at the end of the day. Wonderful! Amy has a great personality, knows the valley, winemakers, and couldn’t have been a better guide! Bravo Amy (and Reba)!! Jim 2023-10-29 Great Time!! I would highly recommend Backcountry. apstatealum 2023-10-15

Amazing tour and fantastic wines.

Backcountry Wine Tours is simply put AMAZING. Jack and Dillon are incredible wine aficionados. Dillon was our guide for the day, and we couldn’t have asked for a better day. We’ve been talking about our tour since. Recapping the wonderful experience. We stopped at three vineyards, and each visit gave us a special wine tasting experience. The day was made perfect by the last visit to Proteus/Aerea. Ian is a true craftsman and lovely person. Thank you Backcountry for making our visit to Portland wine country as good as it gets.

Incredible Day, Even With the Weather!

We can not rave enough about how incredible our day was with Backcountry Wine Tours! They found us the best smaller wineries with amazing wines to try, and knowledgeable staff and/or wine makers! It was such a delight. The weather did not cooperate all day but none of us cared. The thought, care and planning that clearly went into our day was over the top impressive. The customer service and communication was outstanding. We need way more than five stars for Backcountry! You are truly missing out if you do not use them. Even as a “local “- it is totally worth it! A huge thank you for making this a great memory for our family.

Bigger isn’t always better!

We’ve done a couple of different tours in other states and we truly thought this was one of the best. Drew was our driver and had a lot of knowledge about the area and winery history. We were able to make it to 4 wineries, all of which were “off the beaten path” that we wouldn’t have picked on our own. They all had a good variety of styles between them, friendly staff that were knowledgeable, and lovely settings. The van was comfortable and the rides between the wineries were beautiful! If you want a tour that isn’t all the “big names” and were you have a chance to get to know the winemakers & staff, this is the tour for you!

Wine Varieties and AVAs

Oregon’s Portland wine country is known for its diverse wine varieties and numerous American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). In this section, we’ll delve deeper into some of the most popular wine types and their corresponding AVAs within the region.

Pinot Noir and Willamette Valley

The Willamette Valley is Oregon’s largest AVA, encompassing wineries and vineyards throughout the state. Pinot Noir is the most prominent wine variety in this region, accounting for 70% of the produced wines. The cool climate and fertile soil make the Willamette Valley ideal for growing Pinot Noir grapes.

Some notable sub-AVAs within the Willamette Valley include:

  • Chehalem Mountains
  • Dundee Hills
  • Eola-Amity Hills
  • Laurelwood District
  • McMinnville

Rieslings and Chardonnay

Besides Pinot Noir, Portland wine country also produces exceptional Rieslings and Chardonnays. These wines are cultivated in various AVAs throughout Oregon, including the Columbia Gorge and Eola-Amity Hills . Here’s a quick glance at some popular wine varieties grown within these regions:

Other Varietal Wines

Oregon’s wine country is also known for various other varietal wines, thanks to its diverse AVAs. Some of these additional grape varieties include:

  • Pinot Gris: Portland wine country produces a significant amount of Pinot Gris, particularly in the Willamette Valley, where 16% of the produced wines are Pinot Gris.
  • Chardonnay: Representing around 7.5% of Willamette Valley wines, Chardonnay is also popular in the region.
  • Pinot Blanc: This less-common variety can be found in both the Columbia Gorge and Eola-Amity Hills AVAs.
  • Auxerrois, Gamay Noir, Grüner Veltliner, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Tempranillo, and Viognier: These varieties can be found in smaller quantities throughout Oregon AVAs, offering unique flavors and profiles for wine enthusiasts.

In conclusion, Portland wine country offers an impressive array of wine varieties and AVAs, catering to diverse wine preferences. From the famous Pinot Noir and Willamette Valley to Rieslings, Chardonnay, and other varieties, the region’s wine industry truly provides a captivating experience for wine lovers.

Pairing Wine with Local Cuisine

Farm-to-table restaurants.

Portland wine country is known for its excellent wines and close connection to the nearby farms, resulting in a unique and flavorful farm-to-table culinary scene. The fertile Willamette Valley provides the freshest ingredients for restaurants in the area, allowing them to create perfect pairings with the local Pinot noirs and other varietals.

One such restaurant offering locally-sourced dishes is Le Pigeon , where French American cuisine meets Oregon’s high-quality ingredients.

Wine and Cheese Pairings

In addition to farm-to-table experiences, many local wineries provide tasting menus that pair their wines with artisan cheeses. One delightful option is the Signature Pairing , which takes place at a number of venues in the area.

This special activity matches a rotating selection of Pinot noirs with single-origin chocolates, allowing guests to taste how the flavors of red fruit and rose petals in the wines complement the warm caramel notes of Peruvian chocolate.

Culinary Scene

The Portland wine country culinary scene features a variety of unique dining experiences and promotions, ranging from casual wine bars to fine dining establishments. One noteworthy location is Dame , where visitors can taste both local and international wines while enjoying Italian-inspired dishes.

In addition, the growing popularity of unique wine pairing experiences has given rise to a host of culinary events and special activities aimed at showcasing the region’s best wines and foods. Wineries Near Portland

Sample excellent wine at willamette valley vineyards right in portland’s backyard..

Wine enthusiasts know Oregon for its pinot noir, but there are plenty of other reasons to visit Portland vineyards: spectacular views, budget-friendly flights and tasting rooms that just beg for you to slow down and stay awhile. These wineries near Portland feature a variety of varietals, and offer an ideal escape from the city.

Portland Vineyards

Cooper mountain vineyard.

Rustic charm abounds at Cooper Mountain Vineyard in Beaverton, Ore. Free-range chickens wander the grounds near the tasting room, which is located inside a converted barn. But don’t let the casual feel fool you — this is a serious wine. The owners, Dr. Robert Gross and his wife Corrine, planted the first vines here in 1978. Today, numerous varietals are grown on four estate vineyards using organic and biodynamic practices.

Enjoy a five-wine tasting for $25 while taking in views of the Chehalem Mountains.

Open Thursdays through Sundays; reservations are required and are available on the hour, from 11 a.m.–3 p.m.

Villa Catalana Cellars

a large stone building overlooks a Portland vineyard and a pond, with trees all around and wispy clouds above

Burl and Cindy Mostul started Villa Catalana Cellars in 2014. Located just 30 minutes south of Portland, the winery sources grapes from four specialty vineyards in the Pacific Northwest. They offer a variety of wines, including pinot noir, syrah and merlot. Their award-winning Cascade Berry dessert wine is also a popular choice.

The Mostuls’ sprawling home was inspired by a 12th-century Spanish church. The tasting room, located in the courtyard, doubles as a tropical plant conservatory showcasing rare species from around the world. Tastings are $15 per person. Wood-fired pizzas are available for purchase (though you’re also welcome to bring your own lunch or snacks). Enjoy a self-guided stroll through the grounds, which boast beautiful Mediterranean-style gardens, a pond and a bocce ball court.

Open Saturdays, 1–4 p.m; reservations are required.

Helvetia Winery

You can visit Helvetia Winery for a $15 tasting or take things to the next level with a tour — which also features a wine tasting and a smoked salmon tasting — for just $5 more. During the tour, you’ll learn about grape growing and the land’s rich history from the proprietor, farm manager and vintner John Platt. And at the farmhouse-turned-tasting room, you’ll sample Helvetia’s current collection. The vineyards themselves are situated just above the Tualatin Valley floor, and the winery is located just 15 minutes west of Portland, in the foothills of the Tualatin Mountains.

Open daily, noon–5 p.m.; reservations are required .

Raptor Ridge Winery

Raptor Ridge Winery specializes in that Oregon classic — the might pinot noir — plus a range of European varietals in a tranquil, lovely setting just 20 miles (32.2 km) southwest of downtown Portland . Start with a tasting flight — once you’ve picked a favorite, treat yourself to a glass or bottle. They also offer a cheese and charcuterie plate, additional light fare, a non-alcoholic sparkling lemonade flight, year-round events and activities, yoga classes, a variety of tours and more.

Open Thursday–Monday, 10 a.m–5 p.m ; reservations are strongly recommended.

Near the City

From zip lines to whitewater rafting and horseback riding to pioneer history, these attractions are worth the (short) trips outside Portland.

Hamacher Wines

One of Oregon’s oldest vineyards is located less than 30 minutes southwest of downtown Portland: Hamacher Wines (formerly Ponzi Historic Estate). This boutique winery features vineyard views and stunning patio seating. The tasting room is housed in the original home of the winery’s first winemaker.

The flight features a variety of Hamacher wines for a $25 tasting fee (a small number of Ponzi wines are also available to taste and purchase). Find a favorite, then splurge on a bottle. Outside food is allowed on the patio, so you can swirl, sip and picnic all at once. (A game of bocce ball on the estate court is optional and free.)

Open Wednesday–Sunday, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.; reservations are required and can be made via phone or email.

Wine Tours Portland Oregon: What to Know

Wine Tours Portland Oregon

Wine tours in Portland , Oregon?

Many people don’t realize that Portland, Oregon is the closest metro area to several of the premier wine-growing regions in the United States. Wine tasting in Portland Or or wine tours from Portland are both easy and life-changing. If you are planning to visit Portland, make sure to read the below for the history, details, and options for Portland OR wine tours.

A History of Portland

The history of Portland, Oregon dates back to the early 19th century when the region was first explored by European fur traders and settlers. The city was officially incorporated in 1851 and grew rapidly as a center of commerce and transportation partly due to its location at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Portland became a major center of industry, with a thriving shipping and manufacturing sector that included shipbuilding, wood processing, and clothing production. The city also attracted a significant population of immigrants, including Chinese, Japanese, and European immigrants, who established neighborhoods and businesses in the city.

During the mid-20th century, Portland underwent significant growth and modernization, with the construction of new roads, bridges, and buildings, as well as the expansion of its public transportation system. In the latter half of the 20th century, Portland emerged as a hub of the environmental and alternative culture movements, with a thriving arts scene and a reputation for environmental sustainability and progressive political views.

Today, Portland is a thriving city with a diverse economy, a rich cultural heritage, and a strong commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. The city is known for its unique blend of history, natural beauty, and urban amenities and is a popular destination for visitors from around the world.

What is the history of winemaking in the Portland metro area?

The history of winemaking in the Portland metropolitan area dates back to the mid-19th century when the first vineyards were established in the region. At the time, winemaking was primarily focused on producing wine for local consumption and for export to other regions of the United States.

In the early 20th century, Prohibition led to a decline in winemaking in the Portland area, as well as in other regions of the country. However, in the decades following Prohibition, winemaking in the region began to recover as new wineries were established and new grape varieties were introduced.

In the latter half of the 20th century, the Portland metropolitan area emerged as a major center of winemaking, with a thriving wine industry that encompasses dozens of wineries and vineyards. Today, the Portland metropolitan area is home to some of the state’s best-known wineries and is considered one of the premier wine-growing regions in the Pacific Northwest.

The winemaking tradition in the Portland metropolitan area is characterized by a focus on producing high-quality, handcrafted wines using a range of traditional and innovative winemaking techniques. The region is known for its Pinot Noir , which is widely considered to be one of the best examples of this varietal in the world, as well as for its Chardonnay , Riesling, and Pinot Gris.

Overall, the history of winemaking in the Portland metropolitan area is a rich and diverse one, reflecting the region’s commitment to producing top-quality wines and its deep roots in the wine-making tradition of the Pacific Northwest.

What formed the geology of the Willamette Valley?

The geology of the Willamette Valley in Oregon is shaped by a complex history of volcanic activity, tectonic uplift, and erosion. The valley is situated on the Pacific Plate, which has been slowly moving towards the north over the last several million years.

The Willamette Valley was formed by repeated volcanic eruptions and ash deposits over a period of several million years, which built up thick layers of volcanic rock, ash, and pumice. The volcanic activity in the region resulted in the formation of a series of ancient stratovolcanoes, which are now visible as mountains in the Cascade Range .

Over time, the Cascades have been uplifted by tectonic forces, leading to the formation of deep valleys, including the Willamette Valley. The Willamette River, which runs through the center of the valley, has eroded the softer volcanic rock and ash, carving out the valley and shaping its geology.

In addition to the volcanic and tectonic processes that formed the Willamette Valley, the region has also been shaped by repeated cycles of glaciation and erosion. During the last ice age, the valley was covered by glaciers, which carved out additional valleys and deposited large amounts of sediment and rock debris.

Today, the Willamette Valley is known for its fertile soils and unique geology, which provides ideal conditions for agriculture, including winemaking, and for the growth of a wide range of plants and wildlife. The region’s diverse and complex geology is a critical factor in the production of its world-class wines and helps to explain why the Willamette Valley is one of the premier wine-growing regions in the Pacific Northwest.

2. Brick House Vineyards

Brick House Vineyards is a biodynamic vineyard and winery in the heart of the Willamette Valley, and one of the best wineries to visit in the Willamette Valley. We loved the personal and “one-on-one” experience at this winery.

Then, you will be led through a seated tasting on the beautiful patio, where you can try current-release wines, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Gammy Noir.

Tastings at Brick House can be scheduled from Wednesday – Saturday. You can also schedule a vineyard tour with your tasting to have a chance to explore the estate for $60 per person.

Andante Vineyard is a family-owned winery situated in the Van Duzer Corridor AVA of Oregon’s  Willamette Valley . The star of their wines is the Sauvignon Blanc, which is not commonly produced in the region. In addition to regional staples like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Andante also plants niche crops such as Aligoté, which has become very popular.

Andante offers visitors the chance to taste their delicious wines through a wine tasting or a full experience with food pairings on Wednesday – Monday from 11:00 AM – 5 PM. Tastings include a flight of six estate wines, which can be enjoyed inside the rustic tasting room or outside on the new patio. They also regularly host events such as concerts, special wine-pairing dinners, and cooking classes.

Andante Vineyard is the perfect destination for anyone who wants to unwind in a laid-back atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful views while tasting the estate wines and learning about the wine-making process. The winery’s commitment to organic and sustainable practices is also a great reason to visit. Andante’s excellent hospitality, relaxed atmosphere, and beautiful location make it the perfect spot for a special occasion or an afternoon getaway.

8. Lemelson Vineyards

Lemelson Vineyards is one of the best wineries to visit in the Willamette Valley for sweeping vineyard views and refreshing wines. Lemelson Vineyards produces primarily Pinot Noirs and select white wines, including Pinot Gris and Riesling.

Lemelson Vineyards is open for tastings from 11 AM – 4 PM daily. Tastings are hosted inside or on an outdoor patio. Well-behaved pets and outside food are permitted on the outdoor patio, so book an outside tasting if you would like to bring snacks to munch on with your wine.

The tasting costs $30 per person and includes five wines. Lemelson Vineyards also hosts special events, so keep your eye on their calendar!

  • Address: 12020 NE Stag Hollow Rd, Carlton, OR 97111

9. Compris Vineyard

Compris Vineyard is a 12.5-acre vineyard nestled in the Willamette Valley, less than an hour’s drive from the capital, and perfect for a  Portland weekend getaway . Previously called Vidon Vineyard, the family decided to sell the business in 2022. The new owners, Dru and Erin Allen renamed the enterprise Compris, which is French for “included, understood.” Compris celebrates its first anniversary on May 27–28th, 2023

Compris Vineyard transports visitors back to the earth, with the rows of earth embroidered with vines. The region’s varying climate and diversity of soil characterize its Chehalem Mountain AVA vineyard. Tasting flights cost $30 for the “nuanced and complex wines,” and reservations for tastings are recommended for weekends. They are conducted in the production space of the estate vineyard. Compris Vineyard grows a variety of grape varietals. The vineyard is open three days a week, Friday through Sunday, with three separate daily tastings.

After your tasting, purchase a bottle of wine and go out to relax on the rolling lawn and stare at the mountains. The outdoor gazebo can accommodate up to five people, and blankets and heaters are available on chilly days. Don’t forget to bring your pup — well-behaved dogs are welcome on a leash.

Tips for Visiting the Willamette Valley

Make tasting reservations in advance.  .

Most wineries in the Willamette Valley require you to make tasting reservations in advance. However, even if they don’t, it is wise to make reservations as least a month or so in advance at the popular wineries — especially on weekends and during the summer months!

Many wineries in the Willamette Valley are family-owned and run by a small team, so it is impossible for them to churn out hundreds of tastings in one day. Reservations are helpful to ensure they have an adequate number of staff available to host you.

Food options are limited.

Most wineries in the Willamette Valley are working vineyards — not restaurants. While you may find cheeseboards and quick snacks at the wineries, it is not common to find a full lunch or dinner menu that will keep you satisfied all day.

That said, add a winery that serves food to your wine-tasting itinerary, like Stoller Family Estate, or plan a lunch break somewhere in your day. Red Hills Market in Dundee is an excellent stop for gourmet sandwiches and wood-fired pizzas. McMinnville is a small town that also offers several top-rated restaurants, including Thistle, Pizza Capo, and La Rambla Restaurant & Social Room.

Some wineries will allow you to bring your own food to eat alongside your tasting, so you can always pack a picnic lunch to eat at a winery or in your car on the go. Even if you don’t bring lunch — bring some snacks to munch on.

Don’t overbook your wine-tasting day.

The Willamette Valley is huge — some wineries are more than an hour apart. If you want to visit multiple wineries in one day, it is doable, but it would be smart to make no more than 2–3 reservations. You probably will not be able to find a tasting earlier than 10 AM, and most wineries close between 4 PM to 5 PM.

You should plan to spend at least 90 minutes to two hours at each winery and plan another 30 minutes to one hour of travel time between wineries. I would recommend two wineries with a stop for lunch so you don’t feel rushed unless you book a tasting at a winery that serves food — in that case, three wineries may be doable!

Save some money in your budget.

Wine tasting in the Willamette Valley is not cheap. If you are used to paying $10 – $15 for a wine tasting, you may experience some “sticker shock” when you realize that most tastings in the Willamette Valley are between $25 – $40 per person!

However, it is important to understand wine tasting in the Willamette Valley is an experience. You will not be standing at a bar having wines poured into a plastic cup to sample with the pressure to buy a glass. You will be seated with a stunning backdrop and guided through the tasting process with a knowledgeable guide for an hour or 90 minutes.

These winemakers are proud of their craft — and when you pay for a tasting, you are helping to keep their small, local, and family-run winery in business. It is worth the money — just be sure to budget at least $100 per person for a day of wine tasting in the Willamette Valley.
